Yes minister - this is what our city needs

GIVE us the tools and we’ll finish the job. That was the message from Waterford to Finance Minister Paschal Donohue when he visited the city last week. “Sort out the basics and we’ll take care of the rest,” Patsy Carney of Eirgen Pharma told the minister. Mr Carney and other business leaders spelled out just what the basics are: *A technological university *A functioning airport *Completion of the North Quays development. Kathryn Kiely of Glazik Ltd told Mr Donohue that the international reputation of a university was critical for attracting talent to the region. She was backed by Waterford Chamber CEO Gerald Hurley. He said: “When you have the like of James Mernin of Red Hat say that 94% of their interns have been hired but he can’t scale that due to the lack of potential talent, it becomes all too clear that without the TU,

we will continue to struggle in terms of delivering the growth and vision for Waterford under Ireland 2040.” In support of Waterford Airport, Brian Nolan of Sanofi explained that the company had a considerable number of people travelling in and out of London and other European cities each week. And Barry Downes of Sure Valley Ventures said: “Everything is just a little harder because you cannot catch a flight from Waterford.” Mark Hennessey of Bausch + Lomb outlined the importance of the North Quays development for the future of Waterford, in terms of attracting talent, executive accommodation and quality of life. The €400m FDI in the North Quays has the potential to deliver direct and indirect employment in the region of 6,500 jobs, not to mention a

a huge boost to the Exchequer in terms of taxes, VAT and PRSI, Mr Hurley told the minister. The meeting between Mr Donohoe and the business leaders was organised by Waterford Chamber. The minister was visiting the city and went to see a new Respond residential

development in Kilbarry. It has 69 new homes including nine one-bed apartments, six two-bed apartments, 26 twobed houses and 28 three-bed houses. This project is in partnership with Waterford City and County Council, the Department of Housing and the Housing Finance Agency. It is part of Respond’s National Delivery

Programme with 1,086 homes currently under construction and on site. “Waterford is very important to Respond,” said Niamh Randall, Head of Advocacy and Communications at Respond. Picture: Mr Donohoe with CllrJohn Cummins and Senator Paudie Coffey at the Kilbarry site. Photo: Alison Miles

An early call for Santa’s grotto

AUTUMN is just unfolding but for the Winterval team it is always Christmas time. Last week they announced the first details of this year’s programme. The full list of events for Winterval 2019, running from 23 November to 23 December, will be revealed in October. But already it has been confirmed that Santa will be returning to the atmospheric Choristers’ Hall. Momentum Events, Waterford event creation specialists, will produce the experience at Santa’s Medieval Chambers in the 13th century hall in the Medieval Museum. Visitors will be transported through enchanted realms as they enter from The Mall to begin their journey to meet Santa and his helpers. Tickets for Santa’s grotto are now on sale, as well as Winterval on Ice and the Winterval Express Train. Bookings are open at www. winterval.ie, and there are limited early bird tickets.

Our house prices rise as other regions fall HOUSE prices have dropped in almost every part of the country in the past six months. The major exception is Waterford where they are still rising, a new survey shows. Apartment prices are rising in most parts of the country but, whereas the average increase is around three per cent, in Waterford it is more than 10 per cent. The Residential Property Price Barometer covers actual prices achieved by auctioneers in the first six months of 2019, for the three bestselling property types. In Waterford the change in the six month period has been: *Up 10.17pc for 2-bed apartments *Up 2.68pc for 3-bed semidetached houses *Up 3.05pc for 4-bed semidetached homes. Nationally, there has been a drop of 1.34pc in the price of 3-bed semis and 1.68pc for 4-bed semis. Two bed apartments have seen an average increase of 1.35pc. The cities of Cork, Galway and Kilkenny experienced a higher increase for this property type. But only Cork (10.9 per cent) matches the big rise in Waterford. Despite the increase, apartments in Waterford are rela-

tively cheap. The average price of a two-bedroom flat in the city is a little over €108,000. In Cork city it is €215,00. In Galway city it is €190,000 and in Limerick, €143,000. The highest apartment prices are in south Dublin. The price of a two-bed apartment there has fallen by a little over one per cent but still stands at a whopping €382,000. The barometer survey is conducted for IPAV, the Institute of Professional Auctioneers and Valuers. Pat Davitt, IPAV Chief Executive, said it is still the case that second-hand properties in many areas of the country can be bought for less than the cost of building the same property. “In some areas the difference is substantial,” he said. And he said there is no question of a new property bubble emerging. “The factor that led to the quick ramping up of prices is the same one that is now prompting would-be buyers to hold back. It’s a question of confidence.” In a pre-Budget submission, IPAV has called on the Minister for Finance to increase the 3.5 times loan-to-income threshold for mortgages to 4.5 times income. >> Mortgage debt: Page 17

Final bow as curtain falls on our Strictly WATERFORD Lions Club has made a final bow to Strictly Déise Dancing. After 11 years, the curtain has come down on the show which the Lions Club ran annually in the Tower Hotel. It raised more than €250,000 for local charities and people in need. It said: “To our dancers who raised so many funds and rehearsed for months prior to the show, thank you. “To Betty Mulcahy from the Mulcahy-Bible School of Dancing, thank you for training our dancers to such a very high level.

“Thanks to Zara King of Virgin Media Television for interviewing on the night of the shows. “Thanks to Susan ReidFitzgerald for organising so much behind the scenes of the show.” The show was originally conceived and launched in 2009 by Patsy Sheridan of the Waterford Lions Club. Patsy was the driving force behind the event. “All involved are grateful to Patsy for what he set in motion and continued for eleven years,” said the club. The Waterford Lions Club continues to raise funds for local charities and groups through a number of different events each year.

Sales of new electric cars move up a gear

IN the first half of the year, 46 electric cars and 124 hybrid cars were licensed in Waterford – accounting for 1.8% and 4.8% respectively of new private car sales.

An insurance company representative described the pace of sales as “slow and steady”. Jonathan Hehir, Managing Director of Insuremycars.

ie, said he expects the pace to quicken as people realise the savings available when it comes to insuring these vehicles, both on a private and commercial basis. Waterford senator, Paudie Coffey, meanwhile, has said motorists who wish to buy new petrol and diesel cars must not be hit with punitive hikes in Vehicle Registration Tax . He spoke out amid fears the Government is about to slap new taxes on diesel and petrol vehicle owners in a bid to encourage them to make the switch to electric cars. Senator Coffey said he will be personally making his views known to Finance Minister Paschal Donohoe and his Government colleagues on behalf of concerned constituents on the issue ahead of this year’s Budget. The FG general election candidate believes people living in regional and rural areas will suffer the most from the impact of carbon reduction measures on motorists “This is a dilemma the Government must address,” he said.

Alan and the business of sport MUNSTER and Ireland rugby legend Alan Quinlan drew parallels between business and sport when he spoke at a meeting in Waterford. “You have to be resilient in business, just like in sport,” he told the Waterford Chamber and Permanent TSB Business Breakfast. “The attitude has to be right,” he said. “And that is whether you are on the playing pitch or in business. “The most successful sports people and business people

have experienced set-backs and it can only make you stronger.” Alan was taking part in a conversation session with Anna Hanley, Territory Sales Manager, Permanent TSB, and local branch financial consultant, Joss Jones. He said his youthful ambition was always to play hurling for Tipperary. But the call of rugby took over and the professional game followed. “We couldn’t believe we were actually getting paid

to do something we would have done anyway,” he told the audience in the Granville Hotel. Looking at Ireland’s chances in the Rugby World Cup, he said: “Teams have figured us out a bit at this stage. “ I hope we will see something different in the World Cup because if we don’twe will be in trouble.” Picture: Alan with Anna Hanley during the question and answer session. n times gone by, a financial adviser was someone who simply found the best financial product for your needs. Now that role has changed enormously and helping people select products is only one small part of what we do. Financial planners today don’t start new client relationships with conversations about money. Instead they spend very valuable time, really getting to know clients and many times we help our clients to get to know themselves better. Good financial plans are based on your goals, aspirations and ambitions but many times you will never have properly thought about them. So, the first role of financial planners today is to help people identify their goals and dreams for the future and give them a real destination to aim for. It’s all well and good having lofty dreams and ambitions, but equally important is how achievable they are, and what price needs to be paid to attain them. This is critical work carried out by financial plan-

clients wish to blow up their plans, the financial adviser is the voice of reason; the calming influence and the expert guide keeping a long-term perspective. Humans tend to do the wrong t h i n g at the wrong t i m e . T h i s means they sell assets when they are cheap and buy them when they are expensive. In general, people get their market timing all wrong. Our job is to tell you the key is time in the market, not market timing and mostly the best advice will be to stay invested. Good advice around family budgeting can yield enormous results over the long-term as people actively manage their expenses and stop wasting money. MEET YOUR FUTURE TEAM AT

From October 31st how we trade with the UK will change profoundly. Importing and exporting procedures, customs compliance, goods classification, goods transit and tariffs will, in the event of a no-deal Brexit be subject to the rules of trade with a “Third Country.” Once the UK leaves the Customs Union, it will be regarded as a non-European Union country, so therefore Waterford companies need to prepare for dealing with a postBrexit UK. Local Enterprise Office Waterford will host a free #BrexitReady Customs Export & Import Procedures workshop on Friday, September 13th, that will focus on the potential impacts, formalities and procedures Waterford businesses will need to adopt when trading with a “Third Country.” Regardless of a hard or soft Customs Brexit, goods to and from the UK or transiting through the UK, will be subject to strict compliance and documentation requirements. Waterford businesses

that move goods into and out of the UK will have a customs requirement and will need to understand the new customs paperwork, how to classify their goods and understand what their potential duty cost will be. David Walsh, (inset) Head of Enterprise at Local Enterprise Office Waterford said that the uncertainty surrounding Brexit necessitated this Brexit Ready workshop. “There is a lot of vagueness surrounding the implications of the UK leaving the Customs Union on October 31st. Brexit will have an impact on us all and especially on Waterford companies that trade with the UK. Preparing and laying the groundwork for Brexit should make the challenges the October 31st deadline brings more palatable.” To book your place visit www. localenterprise.ie/Waterford Attendance is free but early booking is essential. Union fights against low pay and short contracts NEARLY a third of Waterford’s workforce cannot afford to meet an unexpected expense, the country’s biggest trades union has claimed. Siptu Waterford District Council Secretary, David Lane, was speaking after the union released new data showing the extent and impact of precarious work practices in the county. They indicate that nearly one-in-three workers in Waterford, approximately 12,800 people, cannot afford

to meet an unexpected expense. “Of these workers, 4,800 suffer multiple deprivation experiences,” he said. “The growth of such inwork poverty can be directly linked, in many cases, to the spread of precarious work practices. These include the use of rolling short term contracts, non-voluntary part-time employment, enforced self-employment and other employment relationships which result in workers being low paid and

THE danger of transferring Garda regional headquarters to Kilkenny has been highlighted by figures showing that crime is a more serious problem in Waterford. Under a proposed restructuring of Garda resources the divisions of Waterford and KilkennyCarlow are to be amalgamated and there have been suggestions that HQ will be in Kilkenny. Cllr Matt Shanahan has analysed crime statistics for the two divisions which show that in 2018 Waterford suffered considerably more from serious crime. There were; *Eight more cases of murder or manslaughter; *30 more cases rape and sexual assault; *256 more assaults, 1080 more thefts, 24 more charges for possession of offensive weapons; *443 more cases of arson and criminal damage and 35 more cases of robbery, extortion and hijacking. The difference can be

attributed to Waterford’s much bigger urban centre, says Cllr Shanahan. “The headline numbers for serious crime and for overall case load clearly point to Waterford division being far more active regionally,” he told Waterford Today. He plans to form a delegation to press the Minister or Garda Commissioner on the issue. The issue has also been raised by Cllr Eddie Mulligan, outgoing Chair of the Joint Policing Committee. “Waterford has been a Divisional HQ since 1922 and is amongst the five busiest stations in the country,” he said. “All the major Garda infrastructures for the region are in Waterford. It is twice the size of the Kilkenny current division. “A location of the Divisional HQ from Waterford to Kilkenny would mean the loss of the current Chief Superintendent from Waterford which will have a detrimental effect on all the good policing work.”

Judgment day for enterprise hopefuls THE judging panel for the Bank of Ireland National Enterprise Town Awards is visiting two Waterford entries nest week. On Tuesday 17 September, the judges will visit Villierstown in the morning and the Copper Coast in the afternoon. A total awards prize fund of almost €200,000 will be shared by 40 towns including the overall national winner .

Suffer from COPD, Asthma, Bronchitis or Sinusitis? Salt Therapy may be the answer Available from As the summer ends and the Autumn / Winter looms bringing with it cold and inclement weather conditions, those who are prone to respiratory issues like chest infections, asthma attacks and bronchitis will be trying to ensure they stay infection free. A salt based air purifier called Salin® Plus may be the answer. Available for use in the home for over six years, many people have used Salin® Plus successfully to help manage their respiratory problems including Asthma, COPD, Bronchitis, Cystic Fibrosis, Sinusitis, Rhinitis (Hay Fever), Allergies, Snoring and Sleep Apnoea. What is the Salin® Plus Air Purifier? It is a small device about the size of a kettle that you plug it in each night and leave it on while you sleep. The following morning you wake up feeling refreshed. Historically, lung disease sufferers in Central Europe entered underground salt mines to relieve their breathing problems. With the introduction of the Salin® Plus Air Purifier to Ireland those who suffer respiratory problems can benefit from salt therapy treatment in the comfort of their own home. McCauley Health & Beauty pharmacy have 35 stores nationwide with five in County Cork. They offer this natural salt therapy in all their pharmacies.

How Salt Therapy works The benefits of Salt Therapy can be attributed to its antiinflammatory effects. Salin® Plus Air Purifier uses Microcrystalline salts that are fanned through the air to relieve

breathing difficulties. Once inhaled, the micro-particles of salt penetrate deep into the lungs which can help unblock and remove any buildup of mucus and foreign allergens.

The team at McCauley Health & Beauty Pharmacy said “We have been offering the the Salin® Plus salt therapy for some years now and we find that it is very beneficial for those who suffer from breathing / respiratory problems. The feedback we have had is that Salin® Plus Air Purifier is a brilliant device for people of all ages”.

Can Help Asthma and Bronchitis People who suffer from Asthma or Bronchitis, especially in the winter when flare ups are more common, can benefit from using Salin® Plus. By using this

Asthma and Allergies

Lisa, mum of Charlie (pictured), explained how the Salin® Plus Air Purifier Salt Therapy helped her son’s Asthma and Allergies. She said “My 7 year old son suffers with Asthma and Allergies, as Charlie was 6 weeks premature his lungs were slightly compromised. I heard that the the Salin® Plus could help him so I purchased the little machine in May 2018. The difference this has made to Charlie’s health is fantastic. In the short time we have the Salin® Plus Air Purifier in his room we have not had to get even one prescription and no doctor visits! It’s fantastic and I would highly recommend it.”

Tonsillitis and Sinus Infections

Michael’s mum, Laura said: “Since winter 2013 Michael (pictured) had suffered with Tonsillitis, Sinus Infections, and Chest Infections. In January 2017, we were recommended to try the Salin® Plus for Michael. He is now a far healthier child and is sleeping better. I can 100% say that the Salin® Plus Air Purifier has helped us and our little boy's life and I would recommend this product to other parents”.

Can Stop Snoring A number of people who have bought Salin® Plus Air Purifier are delighted that, as well as it helping their breathing, they also noticed that their partners had stopped snoring as well. What a result!

Replace the Salin® Plus Air Purifier Filter regularly

Mary O’Hara (pictured) said “I turn it on in my bedroom for 30 minutes before I go to bed and leave it on while I sleep all night. I would highly recommend Salin® Plus for those with COPD”. Mark O’Hara (pictured) said “I have been using the Salin® Plus Air Purifier now for approximately 3 months in my bedroom and have noticed a good improvement with my chronic sinus issues. The machine is easy to use and is quiet enough to not interfere with my sleep”.

Chest Infections

Shauna, mother of Jack pictured said. “My son Jack has Down Syndrome and his breathing was always a bit rattley and he was prone to Chest Infections. I was recommended the Salin® Plus Air Purifier and noticed a difference straight away. Jack now sleeps soundly breathes peacefully and has not had any chest or respiratory issues - not even a cold - for almost 12 months. We believe in this machine so much that we are scared to turn it off and use it every night in Jack’s bedroom while he sleeps: We even bring it away with us on family holidays. I would have no issues in recommending this product to other parents”.

Sinusitis & Nasal Drip

Works while you sleep This alternative treatment uses dry sodium chloride to help relieve respiratory problems, there are no masks or tubes involved. Just plug in the small Salin® Plus Air Purifier and leave it on while you sleep.

How Salin® Plus Air Purifier has helped these users

For best results it is recommend that you should change the filter of the Salin® Plus Air Purifier every 4-6 months or it will not work as intended, that is to clear the airways and release phlegm, resulting in you being able to breathe more easily and having a great night’s sleep Keep a note of the date you change the filter.

A great complement to medication The pharmacies profiled in this article recommend that you should that you should never go off your medication without speaking to your pharmacist or doctor. However, they consider the Salin® Plus Air Purifier to be a great complement to medication.

Barbara found that using the Salin® Plus Air Purifier helped her Sinusitis issues. She said, “Since I started to use this small machine every night in my bedroom I saw an immediate improvement and relief from my sinusitis. I no longer have the constant nasal drip down my throat that caused coughing and preventing a good night's rest. The Salin® Plus Air Purifier has helped me tremendously”.

Opinion&Comment

Tramore to to get extra race fixture next year

Another word for a dream

T

here are more tears shed over answered prayers than unanswered prayers. That saying is perhaps proving to be all too true when it comes to the current predicament that British Prime Minister Boris Johnson finds himself in. Born into the Upper Class with an enviable education, a background in high journalism and an easy entry into Parliament the office of Prime Minister was always in his sights. No matter what he did, what mess he found himself in he always came up smelling of roses. A Patrician with the common touch he has an absolute faith in himself as someone with almost a predetermined destiny to the highest office in the land. And he has managed to do it, almost despite himself. It is this faith in himself that carries him through. He doesn’t just have Teflon skin, he is Teflon to the marrow. There have been so many twists and turns to the Brexit Saga that you can be sure that there will be many more to come before the deadline of October 31st happens. There are many who say that Johnson is nothing more than a British answer to the American President. That would be wrong. Johnson is far better educated, far more astute and is a born politician. That doesn’t mean to say that that he will be a particular success or that he will last long as Prime Minister but it does mean that he will do almost anything to hold onto a position that he has spent his entire life trying to attain. Brexit has already defeated David Cameron and Theresa May who also hungered for the position of Prime Minister like Boris Johnson. We might yet see Brexit defeat Boris Johnson. Things are moving at such a pace in Westminster that it is hard to predict what will happen next there. Of course over here in Ireland we have to be wary of what is happening in London and always remember that we have to look at things at one remove and not just react to the essential turmoil that swirls around Brexit and it’s politics. ‘Be careful what you wish for, you might just get it’, is something that certainly applies to Boris Johnson. But it is a warning. Sometimes dreams have a nasty habit of turning into nightmares.

AT a celebration to mark the 40th anniversary of the foundation of Children’s Group Link, Mark Hennessy, site lead at Busch + Lomb. Waterford, was presented with a piece of Waterford Crystal. The presentation was in recognition of the part played by Bausch + Lomb in sponsoring events during the year as well as the contribution of

employees since the leading charity was established. “It is perhaps no coincidence that the year 1979, when Bausch + Lomb opened its doors to its first employees, was also the year that Children’s Group Link set out on its mission to help young people in Waterford,” he said “Since then, Bausch + Lomb and CGL have had the

closest of relationships. Mr Hennessy paid tribute to the contribution of Brendan and Breda Halligan, who have been heavily involved in the organisation for many years; Mark Fenton, who is chairman and Seamus Conway who is on the board of CGL, Jim Bray, Shirley Russell and many others who are current or former employees of Bausch + Lomb.

good of the adult world hang on her every word and worship her as the new messiah? She is in America at the moment where she is to address the United Nations on climate change and where she is trying to oraganise protests in favour of radical climate action. She travelled from Europe on a yacht, thus sparing the world the emissions a journey by plane would have generated. But, of course, the world wasn’t spared, because the scheduled flight she could have taken made the voyage anyway - and several people flew to New York to bring the yacht back to Europe. Greta’s journey took 15 days. If everyone followed her example, international travel would virtually cease along with a lot of international trade. Rich countries would become poor and the poor countries, for whom Greta expresses much concern, would be destitute. Obviously, I am not one of Greta’s disciples. But my issue is not really with the Swedish

teenager. She is a remarkable, articulate, young woman who holds her views passionately and sincerely. My issue is with adult society that gives credence to the halfformed opinions of a 16-yearold and is prepared to let her shape important policies and influence crucial decisions. She is one face of a trend which rejects leadership that is rational and conventional in favour of conspiracy theories and emotional hogwash. Another is Mike Pence. Our recent visitor is an evangelistic Christian who does not believe in evolution and holds the Biblical story of creation to be the literal truth. Ms Thunberg warns that the end is nigh if we don’t repent our climate polluting ways. Mr Pence, on the other hand, has declared that “global warming is a myth” and the Earth “is actually cooler today than it was about 50 years ago”. This man is Vice President of the United States of America.

TRAMORE Racecourse is to get an extra fixture next year. The meeting, set for July 8, is one of seven additional fixtures that have been added to the Irish racing calendar in 2020. The others are Cork (July 24), The Curragh (September 26), Kilbeggan (July 10), Listowel (May 30), Naas (August 23) and Sligo (October 23). Next year’s fixture list also sees changes to the Curragh’s Derby Festival, reverting to the traditional Friday to Sunday schedule. The Irish Grand National meeting also changes for the first time to a Saturday to Monday schedule. Listowel’s seven-day Harvest Festival 2020 will begin on September 20 to avoid a clash with the National Ploughing Championships. The Curragh fixture list sees a number of changes to its 2019 schedule. These include reverting to its traditional earlier start date for the year on March 29. The opening and closing race meetings of the flat turf season will be run at Naas on March 22 and November 1.

h e n I was 16 I knew just what was wrong with the world and how to fix it. Fortunately, the world wasn’t listening and so was spared the creation of an international Marxist super-state that paid surgeons the same as window cleaners and printed money for anyone who needed it. Looking back, I don’t think I was too bothered by the lack of attention. I didn’t have much sense at 16 but I had enough to realise that my ideas might be better in theory than in practice and that the foolish old duffers, who had been through World War Two and the Great Depression, might not be wrong all the time. Does Greta Thunberg ever have such doubts? If so, she hides them well. But why should this 16-year-old have doubts when the great and the

And here’s the really alarming thing - he is probably more rational than the man who is President. In the 1930s, the German people put their faith in a despot who believed the world’s problems could be blamed on Jews. Japan and Italy trusted their fates to equally misguided crackpots. The result was World War Two. Since then the western world, at least, has been led by experienced politicians who believe in compromise and the value of slow and steady progress. In the second half of the twentieth century they gave us a society that was a very great improvement on that of the previous 50 years. We seem willing to put all that at risk by entrusting the future of the world to charlatans, carpetbaggers, 16-year-old girls and Boris Johnson. Greta Thunberg and Donald Trump are both scheduled to address the United Nations this month. Be afraid. Be very afraid. - Michael Wolsey

Mortgage debt households get ray of hope HUNDREDS of Waterford householders in unsustainable mortgage arrears and at risk of losing their homes are being given fresh hope. Central Bank figures for Waterford show more than 700 family home loans in arrears for two years or more, while 86 Mortgage to Rent cases have either been completed or are being actively progressed, according to figures just released by the Housing Agency. The Government’s Mortgage to Rent scheme aims to keep homeowners with unsustainable debt in their current properties debt-free as long-term tenants of their local authority. A recent rise in eligibility values in the county to €305,000, combined with an increased appetite from lenders to work with the scheme, could see

Mortgage to Rent engagements dramatically increase in the coming months. Lenders and funds are now showing a greater willingness to use the Mortgage to Rent scheme as an alternative to repossessing family homes, according to a prominent mortgage expert. “My experience since Home For Life began operating last year is that both lenders and funds want to find workable solutions to mortgage arrears once and for all,” said Paul Cunningham, CEO of Home For Lifer. “This means they want to do a deal with families in trouble in Waterford and move on. “What we are witnessing here are changes which very much favour the Waterford householder. “The Government has shown

it is interested in developing the scheme by widening the eligibility bands by €30,000 while banks and funds have made it clear they prefer to see a solution where the householder can stay in their home paying an income-based rent.” Mr Cunningham estimates that a large percentage of Waterford families deemed to be in serious arrears could use the Mortgage to Rent route to solve their problem. He appealed to families to grasp this opportunity by engaging with their lender, their local MABS officer or a Mortgage to Rent provider. “Society has a problem when we have 28,000 families in serious mortgage arrears, where many of them could potentially find a way out of this misery through Mortgage to Rent,” he said.

Why not look at a career in tourism and hospitality? Thousands of people at this time of year will be considering their next steps in future education and training or onto the job market. With hospitality and tourism businesses around the country including in Waterford looking to recruit over 6,000 entry-level employees each year across all areas of their operation, the Irish Hotels Federation (IHF) is encouraging them to consider a career in the industry. Mr Colm Neville, Chair of the South East branch of the Irish Hotels Federation says. “School leavers can choose from a wide selection of specialist courses on offer in colleges throughout the country, as well as ‘earn and learn’ chef programmes for those who may not want to commit to a full time college course. “There are plenty of opportu-

nities too for graduates as well as school leavers who wish to start working straight away, offering a variety of options for career paths that support professional development with skills that are transferrable internationally.” Opportunities are available in areas such as food and beverage; catering; accommodation services; reception; leisure centre and spa facility management; sales and marketing; human resources; IT; management and finance. The IHF has a dedicated website, Get a Life in Tourism, supported by Fáilte Ireland, which offers comprehensive information on the many careers available in the industry and how to get started. The website also includes personal stories that offer a realistic picture of what to expect from a career in the tourism

and hospitality sector as well as some of the many courses and training schemes that are available, providing young people with valuable firsthand information to help them make their course or career choice. Mr Neville added: “Tourism is Ireland’s largest indigenous industry, providing employment in Waterford and every county in Ireland. “If you’re looking for an exciting challenge with endless career possibilities at home and abroad, check out what hospitality and tourism have to offer.” Tourism and hospitality supports 6,300 jobs in Waterford and some 266,000 jobs nationally, equivalent to 11% of total employment, with more than 60,000 of these jobs in the hotels sector alone. Over 94,000 new jobs have been created since 2011.

Free training in heritage tourism and smart media

Advertorial

Dunhill Multi-Education Centre, in conjunction with Waterford Wexford ETB, are offering free training in heritage tourism with smart media. The full time year long course has introduced a new module in heritage in response to demand from the Waterford tourism industry and learners in the area. The growth of opportunities in tourism employment, led by rising visitor numbers in the City’s Viking Triangle, on the Waterford Greenway, Munster Vales and within the Copper Coast Geopark, has highlighted a demand for qualified tourism professionals with trails development skills. The Tourism Trails with Smart Media students will achieve QQI Level 5 awards in modules such as tourism, heritage, sport

& recreation, landscaping, entrepreneurial skills and multimedia technology. They develop skills and competence in the use of digital technologies such as action cameras and drones to produce web content that can be used through social media to promote Waterford’s trails, tourism and heritage attractions. The modules offered culminate in a QQI Level 5 Major Award in Tourism with Business, a stepping stone to tourism employment and higher education. Now in its seventh year, the course has seen graduates progress to employment with the OPW as guides, activity/ adventure tourism operators, heritage attractions, hotels, travel agents or in their own business start-ups. Others have progressed on

to further training or higher education in WIT, CIT and UCC, while many have become involved in supporting trail development within their communities. The course attracts all age groups including the more mature learner looking for a new direction in their career and opportunities in lifelong learning. The new tourism trails course is starting on Monday 14th of October. No fees apply and social welfare recipients eligible for a payment receive a top up if aged between 18 and 25, in addition to allowances for travel, meals and childcare through the CETS scheme. For further details contact Dunhill Multi-Education Centre on 051-396934, full programme information available on www. dunhilleducation.com.

Jetty Stars drama leaps from radio to theatre Waterford native playwright Noel Kelly’s Jetty Stars was originally a radio play which was broadcast on WLRfm in 2018. Recently that broadcast has been shortlisted for a national Imro 2019 award. James Power of Waterford’s Stagemad is delighted to present the stage play this Sept at Garter Lane Arts Centre for 2 nights only. The play is set on the North Wharf, Waterford, in the late 1970s early 80s. These were the heady days of life on the quays. The River Suir was alive, ships as tall as the Tower Hotel came up the river. Cattle, gangers, hop-

pers, cranes, soldiers and sailors adorned the thriving docks. But there was a darker side to life on our famous dockside. Stella (‘Jetty Star’) allegedly a Waterford prostitute, met the sailor of her dreams on Sunday 25th March 1981 - Saleem, a North African seaman. They were seen socializing in many of the public houses along the quay that day. The next day headlines in all the newspapers screamed ‘Murder On The North Wharf” Jetty Star Involved. Shock and Horror the city was in uproar. A body was never found. To this day no one has been charged.

Jetty Stars was the name given to prostitutes who frequented the ships. Jetty Stars’ goes on stage at Garter Lane September 20th and 21st @ 8pm nightly. James Power who is artistic director of Stagemad Theatre Company spoke recently about the play, saying: “I would urge the people of Waterford City and County to come along and see our history come to life, and decide for yourself if this alleged story, is true or false. Tickets on sale now box office Garter Lane 051 855038. Online www. garterlane.ie

Following their storming Main Stage set at Electric Picnic, Wild Youth announce their Waterford debut at Project on Saturday December 14th. ‘Bursting with colour and precocious potential’ – Clash Magazine ‘A group on the edge of something truly great’ – Hot Press It’s been a busy summer for the band, which included two sold-out shows in Croke Park supporting Westlife, performing at the sold-out Longitude and Indiependence Festivals and their main stage slot at last weekend’s Electric Picnic! Continuing on from the massive success of Wild Youth’s EP ‘The Last Goodbye, which debuted at #5 in the Irish Albums Charts, the Dublin pop-rock superstars went on to sell-out their first ever headline show in

The Olympia Theatre in March, support The Script in London’s iconic Royal Albert Hall and perform to a packed-out house in London’s OMEARA, run by Mumford & Sons member Ben Lovett. In addition to a string of live shows, their outrageously catchy song ‘Can’t Move On’ has earned them over 2 million streams and was the most played Irish song on Irish radio in 2018! Recently, Wild Youth shared the stage with the likes of Mumford & Sons and Dermot Kennedy at this year’s Malahide Castle, and Clean Bandit and Jax Jones at Sea Sessions. They make their much anticipated Waterford debut on Saturday, 14 December, with tickets going on sale this Thursday (5 Sept) at 9am from Projectwaterford.com

God called your name so softly, That only you could hear, And no-one heard the footsteps, Of angels drawing near, It broke our hearts to lose you, But you did not go alone, For part of us went with you, The day God called you home, You’re always close beside us, In everything you do, You were our greatest treasure, God’s gift to us was you. - From your niece Jacinta, Martin, Christopher and Jason, and all the family

We sat beside your bedside, Our hearts were crushed amd sore, We did our duty to the end, Til we could do no more, In tears we watched you sinking, We watched you fade away, And though our hearts were breaking, We knew you could not stay, You left behind some aching hearts, That love you most sincere, We never can and never will, Forget you dad - From your son Jimmy, daughter in law Amy , grandchildren Cade and Charlie.

Birthday Remembrance for our loving mother Dora Cahill, late of 94 St. John’s Park whose birthday occurs on the 16th of September. When I must leave you for a little while, Please do not grieve and shed wild tears, And hug your sorrow to you, Through the years, But start out bravely with a gallant smile, And for my sake and in my name, Live on and do things all the same. - Always remembered and never forgotten by your loving family o holy st anthony Gentlest of saints, your love for God and charity for your neighbour, made you worthy while on earth to possess miraculous powers. O gentle and loving St Anthony, whose heart was ever full of human sympathy, intercede for me and whisper my prayer into the ear of the sweet Infant Jesus who loved to linger in your arms and the gratitude of my heart will be yours. That the tears just start to flow, It’s then I really miss you Dad, More than anyone can know, Sometimes I feel so lonely, And shed some silent tears, I seem to hear you whisper, Don’t worry I am here, I tell you that I miss you, More with each passing day, Again I hear you whisper, I am never far away. -Always remembered by your wife, sons, daughters, grandchildren, greatgrandchildren, sons-in-law and daughters-inlaw xxx

Today’s the Anniversary of The day that I lost you Dad, But loss has taught me many things, And now I face each day, With hope and happy memories, To help me on my way, The times we shared, The laughs we had, Things I miss when I think of my Dad, A Fathers hug, a Daddy’s kiss A grieving Daughter, the Dad I will always miss, until we meet again. I sat beside your bedside Dad, My heart was crushed and sore, I did my duty and held your hand, To the end till I could do no more. And though I’m full off sorrow, The pain in my heart is still the same, That you’re no longer here, Your influence still guides me, And I still feel you near. I feel so blessed to have had you, As my Dad, Your life was a Blessing, Your Memory a Treasure, you are loved, Beyond words and missed beyond measure. - Love you to the moon & back, your loving daughter Erica. o holy st anthony Gentlest of saints, your love for God and charity for your neighbour, made you worthy while on earth to possess miraculous powers. K.G. PRAYER TO ST JUDE Most holy apostle St Jude, faithful servant and friend of Jesus. I am so helpless and alone. I implore you to bring visible and speedy help. One of the more fancied teams for outright success, the Reds came through their group stage without dropping a point. It would indeed be considered a giant killing if the Clashmore outfit could muster a win as they failed to garner a point in the group stage. That said, one never knows, on a given day. This game has a Saturday evening start at 8pm. CLOSE AFFAIR The meeting of Rathgormack and Gaultier in Kill on Sunday evening at 3pm brings together two clubs with a rich underage success in recent years. Rathgormack qualified behind Nire in their group stage with two huge wins along the way over Ardmore and Clashmore/ Kinsalebeg. Both teams will be chomping at the bit with a semifinal place up for grabs.

STRADBALLY FAVOURITES With the unavailability of Tadhg de Burca the pendulum for this tie would appear to have gone very much towards Stradbally.

RELEGATION PLAYOFFS Both games in the relegation playoffs will also take place over ther weekend. Portlaw play Ardmore while Kilmacthomas will face Brickies. The winner of each tie will be safe for 2020 while the losers will playoff with the trapdoor open for one of them.

Blues exit FAI Cup

The concession of three first half goals saw the Blues exit the FAI Cup at the hands of a slick and clinical Dundalk side at the RSC on Monday night last. Patrick Hoban turned creator for the breakthrough goal on nine minutes when the Dundalk striker was given acres of room once again, this time down the right, and his delivery picked out Kelly who found the net from close range.Dundalk doubled their lead in the 23rd minute when Hoban lifted the ball into the path of Kelly who was left all alone and with just Connor to beat, he coolly slotted past him at the near post. Waterford were stunned and it took until the halfhour for their first opportunity when Fitzgerald laid the ball back to Kevin Lynch whose deep cross was headed narrowly wide by captain Rory Feely. The game was effectively over as a contest on 33 minutes when McEleney’s cross was headed into the bottom corner by Kelly to complete his hat-trick to put the visitors three up. Waterford should have scored moments later when

Michael O’Connor on the attack for the Blues against Dundalk in the FAI Cup at the RSC on Monday last. Fitzgerald seized on a poor pass but Dundalk keeper McCarey blocked the wingers effort. The Blues were then awarded a penalty when Gartland brought down O’Connor, but Duggan’s spot-kick was easily saved by the keeper. Waterford started the second half on top and McCarey produced another good save to deny Kenny Browne from close range after he connected powerfully with Poynton’s deep free-kick to the back post. Poyton provided the corner for Waterford’s goal in the 56th minute which was directed into the net by the head of Maxi Kouogun. It really should have been 3-2 almost immediately when

O’Connor showed good strength and control to latch onto Poyton’s ball over the top but he volleyed into the ground and the ball beat McCarey but flew wide of the near post. Waterford continued to atta ck but Dundalk killed the game by wasting time and making a string of substitutions. Waterford FC: Matthew Connor; Rory Feely, Maxim Kouogun, Kenny Browne, Kevin Lynch; Sam Bone (Dean O’Halloran 78); Walter Figueira, Georgie Poynton, Shane Duggan (JJ Lunney 69), Will Fitzgerald (Cory Galvin 62); Michael O’Connor. Super September

book of the week

with Justin Ivory

Autumn migration….. Swallows getting ready to leave our shores (Photo Justin Ivory) September spells back to school and the start of autumn with cool, damp mornings where evoking melancholic and bittersweet feelings for the brevity of summer and the prelude to shortening days, cooler temperatures and the dark, damp and decay of winter. It is a month where we can get every kind of weather from spectacularly hot and sunny days to gales and heavy showers (sure isn’t that every day in Ireland!). September is also a time of great change and activity in the natural world and has to be one of my favourite months. Below is a small selection of highlights to look out for during this wonderfully varied month.

Beech Mast….a favourite of • squirrels (Photo Justin Ivory) Mother Nature has her shelves full to brim with her harvest produce. Trees and shrubs are laden with fruits, nuts and berries including blackberries, beech mast and acorns to name but a few. • It is a great time of year to see and get close to Red Squirrels as they search for fruits to eat immediately and nuts to store going to great lengths to hide them. So intent are they on this activity it is possible to get close and watch them for several minutes without their noticing you. • Just like the squirrels, this is the best month to see our shiest and most colourful member of the crow family – the Jay, as they collect and hide acorns to see them through the winter. • The miracle of migration is in full flow this month as our summer visitors such as Swallows, Martins and Swifts gather and leave our shores to head south for the winter. Meanwhile Ducks, Geese and Waders that have spent the summer breeding in the Arctic and northern latitudes arrive in to spend the winter. Offshore there are huge numbers of seabirds including Petrels, Shearwaters and Skuas. That is just the tip of the iceberg of what is happening during September. So, don’t hibernate just yet. Get out there and enjoy the show!

When Jessica Farris signs up for a psychology study conducted by the mysterious Dr Shields, she thinks all she’ll have to do is answer a few questions, collect her money and leave. But as the questions grow more and more intense and invasive, and the sessions become outings where Jess is told what to wear and how to act, she begins to feel as though Dr Shields may know what she’s thinking . . . and what she’s hiding. As Jess’s paranoia grows, it becomes clear that she can no longer trust what is real in her life, and what is one of Dr Shields’s manipulative experiments.

The New series: Episode 1 - After waking up surrounded by dead bodies and no memory, Myfanwy Thomas is thrown into the world of the Checquy, a paranormal secret service where she’s a high-level operative known as a `Rook’. paddy crazy horse September 19-21. 8pm. €31.00 Theatre Royal. www.theatreroyal.ie

Multi award winner Colin Stafford-Johnson is the foremost nature and wildlife cinematographer and presenter in Ireland today. Colin could be considered the Irish David Attenborough. With over 30 years experience, Colin’s in depth understanding and appreciation of wildlife here in Ireland, and in the most remote parts of the world, make him a leading wildlife expert. Come and hear tales of adventure from years spent tracking down some of Ireland’s most elusive creatures. The show is suitable for all ages!

Back on the road again Tommy Tiernan has a new show. He rants and raves, he dances and acts. He tries to be very silly and very serious at the same time. He mixes a love of comic rebellion and a refusal to be conscripted into a rational view of the world with a deep grá for talking and the poetry of everyday speech. Using high theatricality and lots of dirty words, this is a fast paced and exuberant celebration of everything that’s wild, wrong and wonderful about being alive right here, right now. It is by turns clever and then really stupid. BE THERE !
