Four-month wait for hospice opening FUNDING has been approved to get Waterford’s hospice “partially open” early next year. The 20-bed unit on the grounds of University Hospital Waterford is ready for occupation but has been lying idle while waiting for the Government to allocate money to staff the facility. Health Minister Simon Harris has now approved the funding but staff still need to be recruited and it will be at least four months before the palliative care unit can be opened. The unit, which occupies the ground and first floor of a new building on the UHW campus, will be staffed by a multidisciplinary palliative care team. The breakthrough followed a meeting between Mr Harris and all but one of Waterford’s oireachtas representatives: Minister of State John Halligan, TDs Mary Butler (FF) and David Cullinane (SF) and Senator Paudie Coffey (FG). Mr Harris promised the

hospice would receive funding of €4.8 million for 2020. Recruitment of palliative care nursing staff will start soon and it is expected that the hospice will receive patients in the first quarter of 2020, February at the earliest. The oireachtas representatives welcomed the commitment. Mr Cullinane said they had been promised partial opening but must make sure there are no more delays. “It is extremely important that the relevant staff are hired as a matter of urgency,” he said. Ms Butler said a steering committee was being established to examine the future of palliative homecare supports, which are provided by the hospice. “These are much needed services and I will follow up with Minster Harris and the HSE to ensure that the issue is being progressed,” she said. >>Trolley ‘disgrace’: Page 4

WATERFORD’S roller derby stars, the Viqueens, are on the attack and dressed for battle with help from National Lottery Good Causes funding. Viqueens received a grant of €2,000 from the National Lottery through the Sports Council and are putting their new armour to good use. It’s a physical game, with players hitting members of the opposition with their shoulders, hips and full-on

body slams or positionally blocking them with their bodies, so being well-clad means being well prepared. “The funding has been used to buy home and away jerseys for our members, as well as spares,” said team member Lisa Marie Diamond. Founded in 2011, the Viqueens play flat-track roller derby, which is a fullcontact sport played on quad roller skates around an oval track.

Roller Derby is not just for women. It endeavours to be as inclusive as possible, welcoming people of all shapes, ages, fitness levels, sexual orientations and gender identities to join. Viqueens are currently recruiting people over the age of 18 as skaters, referees (this is an on-skates role) and nonskating officials. Nine in medals at Oscars of food

NINE producers from Waterford were among the winners at the Blas na hÉireann, Irish food awards in Dingle. The bronze, silver and gold winners from Waterford, across a range of categories, were Blackwater Distillery, Carters Chocolate Café, Irish Gourmet Butter, Legacy Irish Cider, Pip & Pear, Pure Food Company, Tastefully Yours Ltd. trading as Kiely’s Dunhill, Tea & Coffee Warehouse and Veronica’s Cafè. Irish Gourmet Butter won Best in Waterford and the Pure Food Company won Best in Farmer’s Market for Waterford. Blas na hÉireann awards have been dubbed the Oscars of Irish food. They recognise very best Irish food and drink products from across the whole island. Products are blind-tasted, with all packaging and identifying features removed. Judges come from a range of food backgrounds from chefs to restaurateurs, academics, journalists, authors, food champions, caterers and enthusiastic home cooks.

Trolly-wait figures ‘are creative accounting’

A COUNCILLOR has cast doubt on the official figures for people waiting on trollies at University Hospital Waterford (UHW). “It is a disgrace that we have 72 empty hospital beds in the new Dunmore Wing whilst creative accountancy is being played with patients on trolleys,” said Fianna Fáil’s Eddie Mulligan, He said University Hospital Limerick had 43 per cent more staff than UHW for similar bed numbers and University Hospital Cork was better funded. “On a recent visit to the Emergency Department at UHW, I counted 20 patients in trolleys in the corridors and was shocked at the total absence of respect and dignity for patients at a tragic time in their health,” the councillor said in a statement. “I was infuriated to learn that casualties can actually arrive by ambulance and the ambulances and paramedics are stacked at the door until the Emergency Department staff can get to them, depending on the severity of the illness or trauma.” CATH LAB: Sinn Féin TD David Cullinane has wel-

comed a commitment from the Minister for Health to lodge a planning application for the construction of a second Cath Lab at UHW through the HSE by the end of the month. He said this represents a major step forward but that there is a long way to go. Speaking following a meeting with the minister, Mr Cullinane said: “I welcome the announcement today that a planning application to build the second Cath Lab at UHW will be lodged before the end of the month. This will allow the HSE to swiftly move to tendering stage with construction starting next year. It is important now that promises made are promises delivered and that timelines set are timelines met. “The delivery of a second Cath Lab will reduce wait times for diagnostic assessments and routine cardiac procedures. The decision on provision of 24/7 PPCI at UHW will be made at the end of the year following the publication of a report from the National Review Panel into Cardiac Care. “ As always Ministerial promises must be judged by how swiftly they deliver. I will keep pressing this issue.”

Doubts on future of diversity data centre CONCERNS have emerged about the future of the National Biodiversity Data Centre due to lack of clarity around the renewal of staff contracts for 2020. The agency, which is based out of the Carriganore Campus of Waterford Institute of Technology (WIT), is a national centre for the collection and analysis of data on Ireland’s biological diversity. Green Party Councillor for Tramore and Waterford City West, Marc Ó Cathasaigh, has called on the Government to secure the long term funding needs of the centre. “Having the National Biodiversity Data Centre based locally is a rare good news story for Waterford,” he said.

“These are a group of extremely dedicated and highly qualified people doing exceptional work on a shoestring budget. “The centre appears to be working hand-to-mouth, with persistent doubt over its ongoing funding by the State at a time when information on biodiversity is more vital than ever.” “Good evidence-based policy relies on good data,” said Mr Ó Cathasaig. “That is exactly what the National Biodiversity Data Centre provides. “It is simply unacceptable in our view that the staff at the centre have three months left in their contracts with no certainty as to whether they can continue their vital work into 2020.”

Former airport chief dies in plane accident

TRIBUTES have been paid to the former manager of Waterford Airport, one of two men who died when their plane crashed in Co Wexford. Peter Tawse (61) from New

Ross, and his flying partner John Finnan (58), from Co Kildare, were killed when their light aircraft came down near Duncormick . Mr Tawse grew up in England

and came to Ireland in the 1980s. He moved to Co Wexford and worked in Wexford Flying Club as an instructor . He became widely known through his role as manager of Waterford Regional Airport from 1987 to 2003. “Everyone in Irish aviation who will be experiencing a sense of loss,” the Waterford Aero Club said in a Facebook posting. Friends recalled him as a man who adored aviation. “Flying was his thing,” said Willie Cullinane, who befriended the Englishman shortly after he moved to Ireland. “He was a very well liked man, there were very few people who didn’t get on with him,” Mr Cullinane told the Irish Times. He was also fondly remembered by colleagues at Institute of Technology Carlow, where he taught part-time. Mr Tawse is survived by his wife, Kay Furlong, his mother and two sisters. The men were killed instantly when their Rollason Condor hit the ground having taken off from the Irish Light Aviation Society (ILAS) airfield at Taghmon.

Don’t lose it, you can re-use it OCTOBER has been designated National Reuse Month and a Waterford group is setting a good example. Renew Enterprises repairs everyday items such as bicycles, wheelchairs, lawnmowers, strimmers and hedgecutters, and gets them back in use. On October 17, it is holding an Open Morning to raise awareness about the work it does in preventing items going to landfill.

Renew is a not-for-profit enterprise operated by Treo Port Lairge CLG. It was established to create full-time employment for people who are out of the labour market and to provide opportunities to learn and practise new skills. “We operate a busy workshop that services and repairs a whole range of mechanical and everyday items for our customers at a reduced cost,” explains Renew’s manager Nicola Tull. “In many

cases when the item is beyond repair, we strip the parts that can be reused, thus reducing the amount of waste that goes to landfill.” The Open Morning takes place between 10am and 1pm on Thursday, October 17 at Unit 2, Block 4, Lacken Road, Business Park, Kilbarry. Humans have never lived in a world much warmer than today; yet the current trajectory of at least 3⁰C above the pre-industrial average by 2100 could put us beyond the realm of human experience sometime in the next 30 years. In 2017, emissions reached 37 GtCO2; Fossil fuels supplied 80% of the energy mix; 80% of emissions were not covered by carbon pricing; 59% of energy supply investment went to fossil fuels and 3.3 million electric vehicles were on the road. The resulting physical damage: Temperature increased 1.1⁰C relative to pre-industrial levels; CO2 concentration is over 400 ppm (last occurred three million years ago); Sealevel rise is at 22 cm; Half of the Great Barrier Reef has bleached to death since 2016,

CALL ME BY YOUR NAME The ‘peach scene’ in this movies has become so famous that practically no matter where the actor Armie Hammer goes there is always someone there to give him a peach in reference to a moment in the film that has become just as notorious as the ‘butter scene’ in Last Tango in Paris. The movie centers around an intense relationship that happens one summer between a 17 year old teenager and a student that is invited by his Professor father to spend some months with them at their house in Tuscany. In a breakout starring role, Timothee Chalamet plays the 17 year old Elio and Armie Hammer his somewhat older lover. The pace of the film is somewhat languid reflecting the idyllic summer months in the Italian countryside. For the first half of the film there is a tentative courtship between Elio and Oliver and nothing really tangible happens between them. But it is clear that they two of them are edging closer to each other. It doesn’t stop Elio having a sexual relationship with a French teenage girl who, when the real relationship between Elio and Oliver begins, gets gently pushed aside. All of this is happening under the watchful eye of Elio’s parents. They are both loving and caring people but it is the father who is more fully conscious of the real nature of Elio’s and Oliver’s entanglement. While Elio’s and Oliver’s relationship is the center of the movie one of the best moments comes towards the end when Oliver has left the villa and Elio’s father talks to him about what has just happened between the two of them. It is so insightful and loving that it really is one of the highlights of the movie. All the action takes place in the late 1980’s and a lot of people’s attitudes towards gay people, especially in the first onset of AIDS panic, wasn’t as evolved as it is today. This film is based on a book of the same name and in a welcome twist of fate the movie is much, much better than the book. A wonderful film.

Future ‘bright’ at port as traffic and profits rise THE Port of Waterford saw a 15 per cent increase in bulk shippage in the first six months of the year compared to the same period in 2018. Turnover was over €4.1m, an increase of 10 per cent on the same six months in 2018 while profits were stable at just over €800,000. A spokesperson for the port has warned that “external factors impacting demand are making the trading environment in the second half of the year more challenging than in 2018”. But its new corporate plan envisages full-year revenues increasing to €11.6m in 2023 with an operating profit of €3.5m. The future is bright for the port, said Waterford’s Senator Paudie Coffey. “The Port of Waterford has paid a dividend to the State for the first time in 200 years” he said. “The pension deficit has been significantly reduced and more employees have been hired. Meanwhile, business

and turnover at the port has increased significantly and the potential for new development is strong.” Senator Coffey was speaking as Des Whelan was reappointed chairperson of the Port of Waterford. Mr Whelan is managing director of Waterford Local Radio (WLRfm) and Chairman of Red FM in Cork City. Mr Whelan’s reappointment was confirmed by the Minister for Finance, Paschal Donohoe, and the Minister of Transport, Shane Ross, when he appeared before an Oireachtas Committee in Leinster House. Senator Coffey said: “I congratulate Des Whelan on his reappointment as Chairperson of Port of Waterford following his highly successful tenure during his first period in charge. I would also like to commend the entire board, CEO Frank Ronan and all the staff for their fantastic combined efforts in turning around the fortunes of the Port of Waterford.”

Relief for households as burglary rate slashed

THERE has been a marked drop in burglaries across Waterford city and county. The latest quarterly research figures from the Central Statistics Office show a four per cent decrease in burglaries nationwide in the second quarter of the year compared to the same period in 2018. But Waterford saw a dramatic decrease of 31 per cent for the quarter. The Eastern region of Ireland had an increase of five per cent in burglaries; the biggest increase in break-ins there was in Wicklow, up 33%. Every other region nationwide had a decrease in break-ins. Analysis of the figures was conducted by HomeSecure, the home monitoring company. “These latest figures show that the efforts Irish people are making to protect their homes are proving to be effective in deterring burglaries,” said its CEO Colm Daly.

Waterford Philosophical Society Waterford Philosophical Society presents a new lecture series - The Philosophy of Richard Rorty - at 7:30 p.m., on Monday 14 October, Waterford Cheshire, John’s Hill Richard Rorty showed that philosophers such as Nietzsche, Freud, and Wittgenstein emphasized the contingent and historically situated nature of human experience in ways that undermine our age-old obsessions about the concept of truth. While undermining our assumptions about the tasks and potential of philosophy, he maintains that our study of literature enhances our appreciation of the need for solidarity in a world suffused by cruelty and injustice. These lectures will examine Rorty’s Contingency, Irony and Solidarity from a variety of perspectives. Their presiding aim is to demonstrate the ways in which Rorty’s immense erudition enriched his awareness of the provisional nature of our claims to knowledge and the futility of our search for a vocabulary which would conclusively define the ultimate nature of reality. Choose your battles!

T

here are always times in our lives when we will want or need to argue, confront or even fight for what we believe in. We all know people who will fight their corner over practically anything, regardless of how insignificant the battle is. There can be so much frustration, anger and wasted energy over relatively small stuff: it is all too easy to lose sight of the bigger picture. “Choose your battles wisely” I recently found myself saying to myself as I watched two people I know arguing over a minor trifle. Life is full of opportunities for us to choose whether to make a big deal out of something, or simply to let it go, and realising that in the wider scheme of things, it really doesn’t matter. The truth is that life is rarely exactly the way we would like it to be, and other people often don’t act the way we would like them to act. There are always going to be

breda gardner Natural Healing

it is all too easy to lose sight of the bigger picture. people who disagree with you, people who do things differently, and things that don’t work out the way you had hoped.

If you fight against the natural flow of life, then you will be spending most of your time fighting battles. A more peaceful and graceful way to live life is to consciously decide which battles are worth fighting and which ones are better left alone. This doesn’t mean you have to be a pushover - far from it, in fact - it just means you are saving your energies for what really matters. If you are the sort of person who likes to lead a stress-free, balanced life, you soon realise that most battles pull you away from your inner peace and tranquillity. Must you make a mountain out of a molehill? Do you really want to confront someone over a simple mistake? Is it really important to prove to your spouse that you are right and they are wrong? That they were the one who left the remote control in the wrong place and never put anything back. Or that they were the one who got you lost en route to the

cinema. Or that they are the reason you are running five minutes late. So much time, effort and energy wasted on meaningless battles that won’t change anything, and just end up leaving both sides exactly where they were, only feeling bad about themselves. The original quote “Do not fight battles you cannot win!” is attributed to a Chinese military strategist called Sun Tzu from the 3rd or 4th century. And although his wise words concerned armies and fighting men, the wisdom applies on a much wider basis. So next time you feel the heckles rising, think of Sun Tzu, take a deep breath, take a step back, and remember: a battle not fought is never lost!

Q

Do you own a dog or cat? Do you think there really are “dog people” and “cat people”? A. This idea certainly pervades popular culture, and a new breed of researchers has begun to look at human-pet interactions, says Ruth Searle in “New Scientist” magazine. Using an online platform, Sam Gosling and colleagues at the University of Texas recruited some 4500 self-identified cat or dog persons and rated them on five key dimensions of personality. “Compared to cat people, dog people tend to be more extroverted, agreeable, conscientious, less neurotic By Bill Sones and and open.” Self-confessed cat people Rich Sones, are more likely to say they disliked PhD structure and agendas, took less interest in others, and were more adventurous and unconventional - ”something you might not expect of more neurotic, introverted types,” Searle adds. As Gosling puts it, “Given the tight psychological connections between people and their pets, it’s likely that dogs and cats are suited to different human personalities.” Dogs undoubtedly have social smarts, understanding when you point at things and even following your gaze. They also recognize emotion in your face and will respond to their names. But what about cats? A. Not much research has been done on cats, since they’re difficult to work with, notes David Grimm in “Science” magazine. Cats simply refuse to cooperate with research protocols, losing interest and struggling to escape. “If you want results on one cat,” says cognitive ethologist Ádám Miklósi, “you have to test three.” Yet with patience and resourcefulness, progress has been made on understanding feline social cognition. Some cats perform as well as dogs at following people’s pointing and gaze and many recognize their names; some can even distinguish their owners’ voices from those of strangers. Cats generally prefer interacting with people rather than with food and toys and spend more time with people who pay attention to them. “If you take a well-socialized, calm cat, I think it’s going to perform similarly to a dog,” says Miklósi.

New Déise boss wary of meeting native county

WATERFORD’S new hurling boss says the prospect of opposing his native Tipperary was “one of the biggest bridges I had to cross in my own mind” before taking the job. He will have to cross that bridge again in the first round of the Munster Senior Hurling Championship. The schedule, announced last week, matches the Déise with Tipp in the first round. They will meet Limerick in round two, Cork in round three and Clare in round five, with no match in the fourth round. New manager Liam Cahill has spoken of his concerns about facing Tipp. He managed their underage sides to six major honours (three AllIreland titles and three Munster crowns) since 2015 and will now be going up against some of those successful players at Munster senior level.

“To be honest (playing Tipp) was one of the biggest bridges I had to cross in my own mind,” he told the sports web site, The 42. “You’re immersed in underage hurling and in Tipperary hurling all your life. “Then you turn around and say ‘how are you going to take down your own troops if the opportunity arises’.” He felt, however, that a lot of the younger players he had managed were not yet ready for senior level. “Whilst there will be quite a number of them making the squad and coming at various stages next year for Tipp, there’s still not going to be a high majority of them there,” he said. “That makes it a small bit easier but it’s still a hard ask and it’s something that did bother me and something I did

find difficult to get my head around. “A couple of weeks after the All-Ireland, a member of the selection committee in Waterford contacted me. After that it was a case of getting my head around if it was something that I would see myself doing. “When I thought about it at length and about the possibilities of what could be achieved in the position, the kind of players that are at your disposal probably attracted me a lot to it. It excited me really when I sat down and thought about it.” Dates and times for the SHC fixtures are expected to be announced by the Munster Council next month. The likely dates are: round one (May 9-10), round two (May 16-17), round three (May 29-30), round four (June 6-7) and round five (June 14).

Cannabis mum to headline conference

Opinion&Comment

Speeding up, slowing down

A

s soon as children are let out from school for the summer holidays you can be assured that the next day uniforms will be on sale in the shops. As soon as the first leaf falls from a tree somewhere in the country you can be assured that all the costumes and treats for Hallowe’en will be in the shops. And about the same time, much as you might loathe it, items on sale for Christmas will start creeping their way into the shops as well. If the only constant is change then the one thing that really seems to be changing these days is the pace in which life is lived. The internet is rightly or wrongly blamed for many things but looking at it all it really has done is given us new ways of doing old things. We still communicate with each other as well have always done, we still date, just in new ways and we still shop and buy things, just in a different format, and all at a faster pace. When everything is available at your fingertips it is no wonder that when people want something they want it straight away. No one is out of touch or out of reach, no small piece of information can’t be found in a matter of seconds, entertainment can be had on demand, the only limit it is the amount of time that you can keep yourself awake to watch just one more episode. Of course there are huge upsides to all of this interconnectivity and living in a digital world has brought great benefits. In the rush to embrace all of this however there is a tendency to distance ourselves from thinking about the downsides. Some of them are more obvious than others such as the pressure on young people from a deluge of information that they just don’t have the maturity or experience to properly handle. Then there are the more oblique ones such as the competitive nature of this technology, particularly when it comes to news and the manner in which various news outlets try to grab our attention. The more incendiary an item is in it’s presentation the more it gets coverage and the more people will watch. The old adage of ‘if it bleeds, it leads’ is now more true than ever before. The speed at which we live our lives now, the way companies string out big buying periods, the way news is delivered has changed. Sometimes you need to step back from it all to regain your sanity.

Our View

Calls for more checks on anti-social tenants WATERFORD Council has been criticised for not conducting Anti Social Behaviour checks on housing applicants who qualify for Housing Assistance Payment (HAP). The checks are intended to identify tenants who may cause a problem with antisocial or criminal behaviour. The council carries them out when it places a family into one of its directly-owned properties but it does not do so when it places a housing applicant in private accommodation through HAP. This policy was described as “outrageous” by Councillor Eamon Quinlan, who raised the issue at the last meeting of the City and County Council. “This isn’t just Waterford

Council,” he said. “They are all at it over the country.” He said lower income families. were finding it “nigh impossible” to secure homes and this policy was making landlords reject HAP tenants. “The good are being punished for the actions of a small minority as landlords just don’t want to chance it,” said the Fianna Fáil councillor. “Those that keep abusing the system, don’t value their homes, intimidate neighbours etc are able to slip through the gaps here,” he said. “It builds huge hostility in communities when the council places people into a quiet area only to have them engaging in fighting, dumping, or, possibly, drug dealing.”

Storm in a tea cup?

F

AMILIARITY breeds contempt, it is said, and that appears to be the case with storms. They seem to be a lot more frequent since we started giving them familiar, chummy names. And they treat us with utter contempt. They arrive uninvited, trash the place, and leave without a word of apology. Not that poor old Lorenzo did us much harm. But what can you expect from a storm with a name like that? Lorenzo is a superb handle for a sculptor, perfect for a painter, wonderful for a waiter and beautiful for a ballroom dancer. But for a storm? Thor would make you tremble. Zeus would make you quake. Lorenzo can only raise a smile. No wonder he made a speedy departure. Met Eireann has been accused of scaremongering about Storm Lorenzo; unfairly so, I think. They presented the forecasts in a straightforward fashion and issued a variety of warnings most of which were quite low key and aimed at specific regions. The real scaremongers

Michael Wolsey were RTE who elevated Met Eireann’s caution to a crisis. For 48 hours before Lorenzo’s scheduled arrival they had George Lee on a loop warning us of Armageddon. On the eve of the storm they had correspondents out all along the west coast, predicting doom and destruction and, on the morning after, they ran a special programme looking at what might have happened but never did. And still we had George Lee on bulletin after bulletin telling us that it it was all a symptom of climate change and warning that we can expect more extreme weather events unless we mend our carbon emitting ways. RTE’s Environment Correspondent is far from alone in this contention.

The overuse of fossil fuels is causing Arctic ice to melt and the rain forests are being destroyed. Therefore, the argument goes, we have wet, wet summers and storm-tossed winters. A scan of relatively recent history tells a more complex story. For no matter how bad the weather may be, records nearly always reveal a time when it was worse. And in many cases that time was long before Arctic ice had shown the slightest sign of melting or any problem had been detected with the rain forests. Carbon emissions may have encouraged Storm Lorenzo. But were they also to blame for Hurricane Charlie that crashed like a wrecking ball through much of the country in 1986, bringing death and destruction? Maybe they were. But what about Hurricane Debbie in 1961 which ripped up trees, knocked down walls and killed 18 people in Ireland? Nobody had even heard of global warming back then. Nor is it likely that the burning of fossil fuels contributed to Ireland’s most infamous storm on the Night of the Big Wind. That cyclone, which

came blasting in on January 6, 1839, left hundreds dead and thousands homeless. It blew down the chimney of Kilkenny’s new gas works and leveled all the buildings nearby. And it is hard to see how human activity can be blamed for the savage weather in the 1740s. It was a period when unprecedented amounts of rain were accompanied by storms and extreme frosts. In Ireland it led to a famine that is estimated to have killed almost 40% of the population, a proportionately bigger disaster than the Great Famine a century later. Don’t get me wrong. I think we should stop polluting our planet with plastic. I think we should stop poisoning the atmosphere with carbon fumes. And I think we should reduce our reliance on fossil fuels which, other considerations apart, will eventually be used up. All these actions are very desirable but I am not sure that they will reverse the course of climate change. And, despite all the earnest certainty with which they preach, I do not see how the prophets of doom can be sure of that either.

Home Security

One-in-seven homes burgled in last 10 years one in seven homes or busineses have experienced a break in Ireland in the last ten years. That’s almost a quarter of a million reported burglaries! Although burgarly numbers have dropped recently, when it comes to recorded reports of burglaries Waterford is listed among the top five busiest Garda stations, alon with Tallaght, Blanchardstown, Dundrum, and Pearse Street in Dublin. According to PhoneWatch Managing Director, Eoin Dunne “While we’re seeing a welcome reduction in burglaries in recent years, the reality is it remains all too common in Ireland. By examining the figures over an extended period we can see the true scale and impact of burglary in Ireland.” So what can you do to protect your property? Quite a few things actually. A home security alarm is a great deterrent, its an investment into the security of your home and can mean a saving to you on your home insurance. Monitored alarms are even bet-

ter as you will be notified when they are triggered. Other tips according to AIG Home Secruity are ... It is important to be vigilant if going on holidays, especially if your home is unoccupied. Get a neighbour or friend to regularly

check on your property, switching lights on and off. Ensure that all doors and windows have strong locks. This is especially important for patio doors, which are easy for burglars to access. The more time it takes to access your home, the

less attractive it is to a burglar. Keep your house as lit up as possible at night. Install lights near all outside entrances. If possible leave a car parked in the driveway, maybe ask a neighbour to park there while you are away. If you are out and about in the evening, leave a light or two on to make it look like someone is home. It’s also a good idea to leave a radio on. When you buy new appliances such as a flat screen TV, dispose of the packaging carefully. Don’t leave the box outside your house. You may as well put up a “rob me” sign. Don’t leave any valuables such as cash or jewellery lying around or hidden in obvious places. Make sure they are securely stored. Always take photos of valuable jewellery for insurance purposes. Ensure you have adequate insurance cover for valuables. Keep hedges and shrubbery well clipped as they can act as a hiding place for thieves.

Twenty degrees Celsius is an ideal temperature for the living areas in a home. Lowering your thermostat by just 1ºC could knock up to 10% off your heating bill, saving around €150 in a typical family home. Get your boiler serviced annually to ensure safe and efficient operation. It could save you a further €150, which should cover the costs. Use the 30 minute rule in cold weather: In the morning, set your heating to come on 30 minutes before you wake up and go off 30 minutes before you leave for work.

In the evening set it to come on for 30 minutes before you are due home and off 30 minutes before you go to bed. If only one room needs heating, such as a home office, use a space or portable heater instead of the central heating. For free standing heaters, choose ones with thermostat controls and timers for more efficient heating. While open fires look beautiful, they can be a real waste of energy with more than 75% of energy going up the chimney. They are also damaging to air quality, so choose a more energy

Top tips to heat home efficient option. Don’t overheat unused rooms. If they are going to be unoccupied for long periods, turn down the thermostat or valve on the radiators but keep a small trickle of heating going. This will help to reduce the risk of condensation. If you are leaving the house unoccupied for an extended period, set the timer and thermostat to allow for a low level of heating each day. This will help to reduce the risk of frost damage. Much of the heat loss from a house goes through the windows, particularly if they

are single-glazed. Keep curtains closed at night and ensure they hang behind radiators. Insulating your attic and walls could save you 30-40% on your home heating bill. Grants for wall and roof insulation, as well as home heating upgrades, are available from SEAI with quick online approval available. Visit www.seai.ie/ homeenergygrants Remote heating controls allow you to turn on and off your heating from your phone, tablet or computer and are really useful if you work irregular hours.

A Little Life

Anna Nicole Smith The Autopsy Virgin Media 1, Thursday October 10 @ 12am

An immensely powerful and heartbreaking novel of brotherly love and the limits of human endurance. When four graduates from a small Massachusetts college move to New York to make their way, they’re broke, adrift, and buoyed only by their friendship and ambition. There is kind, handsome Willem; JB, a quickwitted, sometimes cruel Brooklyn-born painter; Malcolm, a frustrated architect; and withdrawn, brilliant, enigmatic Jude, who serves as their centre of gravity. Over the decades, their relationships deepen and darken. Yet their greatest challenge, is Jude himself, an increasingly broken man.

Episode 1: Forensic pathologist Dr Richard Shepherd investigates the death of the model and actress, who died in February 2007 at the age of 39 from a drug overdose. The evidence revealed by her autopsy bears testimony to the addictions and behaviour that blighted her life, while also shedding light on the unusual cause of a mystery infection that contributed to her death and uncovering a previously undiagnosed condition that could explain many of the tragic events of her life.

Old birds’ nests.....or are they? (Photo Justin Ivory) With Halloween and the season of the witch fast approaching, trees will soon be shedding their leaves. As winter arrives the denuded branches of many trees will reveal what look like old, dense birds’ nests. Closer inspection will show that these “old nests” all seem to be in Birch trees (Betula spp.). Even closer inspection reveals that these structures are not nests at all but dense clumps of living twigs! They are Witches’ Broom Galls and according to folklore are the result of witches flying over the tree. In actual fact the culprit is Taphrina betulina, a type of fungus. The fungus releases plant hormones known as cytokinins into the tree branch. These hormones stimulate cell division causing the tree to vigorously produce extra shoots resulting in a dense twiggy cluster. The fungus then proceeds to feed on these new shoots by extending threadlike hyphae into them to access the tender tissues inside. There are many different types of plant galls with a myriad of causers and hosts resulting in all sorts of shapes, sizes and structures. Why create a gall at all? Typically a gall provides its’ inhabitant with one or more of the following: - food, shelter, protection from predators. In all cases it is a parasitic relationship. In such a relationship the invader derives some benefit while the host, may or may not be harmed, but derives no benefit from the relationship. So, as winter progresses try and find which trees the witches have been flying over and see some of these nest-like galls for yourself.

Hush Exhbition by Sophie Carpentieri & Paddy Dwan Waterford Central Library, Imagine Art Festival

One of the most popular Irish theatre shows from recent years, Shackleton tells the story of Irish explorer Sir Ernest Shackleton’s failed voyage to cross the Antarctic continent in 1914. It’s a visually spectacular re-telling of perhaps the greatest survival story ever, and features an ensemble cast, who are helped by original footage from the voyage and some very clever on stage puppetry. Director Niall Henry says that it’s a story that continues to have “huge appeal”.

A Night Owl Charity Concert in aid of the Irish Guide Dogs for the Blind will take place at St Patrick’s Gateway Centre, Patrick Street, Waterford on Saturday October 12th from 7.30pm til late. Tickets are 10.00, there will be spot prizes, raffle, and PAWsome live music on the night. Your support will change the lives of the people who are vision impaired and families of children with autism! Great night not to be missed!

Born in Switzerland, Sophie Carpentieri studied architecture. But life had other plans and she started a journey, on horseback, that eventually led her to Ireland. Sophie’s work reflects her affection for the local landscape and her love of nature and animals. This shared interest for the surrounding wildlife have led painter Sophie and local photographer Paddy Dwan to co-create imageries. Hush is an exploration of the unnoticed, a collection of unspoken encounters displayed on the quiet walls of the library.

In loving memory of James Mernin, late of Tírconnell Close, and formerly of Villierstown On this First Anniversary of Jim’s death, we, his wife Betty, sons John and James, daughters-in-law Julie and Joyce, and grandchildren Daniel, Kelly, Adam, and Bobby, would like to acknowledge the many expressions of sympathy and gestures of heartfelt kindness shown to us following our sad loss on 11 October 2018. Our sincerest thanks are expressed to Jim’s extended family and all those who sympathised with us, sent messages, cards and letters, and those who supported us in so many ways in the intervening months. All your kind wishes have been most gratefully received. We reiterate our gratitude to the many medical professionals and carers who took such good care of Jim in his times of need. We also acknowledge the sensitivity and support shown by all those involved in Jim’s funeral; Fr. Pat Fitzgerald and other religious; Thompson’s Funeral Directors; and the many individuals who played such an important part in the funeral services. We are most grateful for the support demonstrated by everybody during our time of greatest need and we trust that you will accept this acknowledgement as a symbol of our sincere appreciation. The Holy Sacrifice of the Mass will be offered for all your intentions. Jim’s First Anniversary Mass will be celebrated in St. Paul’s Church, Waterford, on Saturday 12th October at 6pm. I thought of you today, But that is nothing new, I thought of you yesterday, And days before that too. I think of you in silence, I often speak your name, All I have are memories, And your picture in a frame, Your memory as a keepsake, From which I’ll never part, God has you in his arms, I have you in my heart. - From your loving wife Betty, sons John and James, daughters-in-law Julie and Joyce, and grandchildren Daniel, Kelly, Adam, and Bobby. In loving memory of David Grant, late of 71 Mount Suir, Gracedieu, Waterford, whose 9th anniversary occurs on 10th October.

Sweet is memory, dear is your name, Deep in our hearts you will always remain, It does not take a special day For me to think of you, Each mass I hear, each prayer I say, Is offered up to you. Perhaps if I could see, The splendour of the land, To where Marian was called, I’d understand, Perhaps if I could hear, The welcome you received, From old familiar voices, I would not grieve, Perhaps if I knew the reason, Why you went I’d smile & wipe away the tears that flow, I’d wait content, forever. -From your husband Tom, sons David & Paul, daughters Susan,Claire & Jean, sons-inlaw & daughters-in-law

Take care of David O Lord, As he takes his rest, For he was my son, And one of the best, When I am sad and lonely, And things are going wrong, I seem to hear you whisper, Cheer up and carry on, And when I see your photo, You seem to turn and say, Don’t cry I am only sleeping, We’ll meet again some day.

Nanny, If Heaven had a number Nanny, We’d call you on the phone, To tell you that we love you, And beg you to come home, A bouquet of red roses, Only for you sprinkled with teardrops, Instead of dew, And in the middle a forget-menot, To say Nanny we haven’t forgot, Gentle Jesus up above, Give our Nanny all our love. - With love from your grandchildren Marian, Deep in my heart your memory is kept, To love and to cherish and never forget. -From your brother-in-law Ned & family Quietly today your memory we treasure, Loving you always, Forgetting you never. - From your sister Esther, brother Noel and Pauline.

In loving memory of Terry O’Neill, late of 4 Bishop’s Grove, Ferrybank, whose 4th anniversary occurs on the 9th of October. Sweet is your memory Dear is your name, Deep in our hearts you will always remain, It does not take a special day For me to think of you, Each mass I hear, Each prayer I say Is offered up to you. - From your loving husband Shay and family

o holy st anthony Gentlest of saints, your love for God and charity for your neighbour, made you worthy while on earth to possess miraculous powers. Miracles waited on your word, which you were ever ready to speak for those in trouble or anxiety. Encouraged by this thought I implore of you to obtain for me my request. The answer to my prayer may require a miracle, even so you are the saint of miracles. O gentle and loving St Anthony, whose heart was ever full of human sympathy, intercede for me and whisper my prayer into the ear of the sweet Infant Jesus who loved to linger in your arms and the gratitude of my heart will be yours. K.G.

- Sadly missed, your heartbroken mother Breda and Paddy. Loving and kind in all his ways, Upright and just to the end of his days, Sincere and true in his heart and mind, Beautiful memories he left behind. - Your loving Dad Jimmy. Time speeds on, nine years have passed, Since death its gloom, its shadow cast, Within our home, where all seemed bright, And took from us a shining light, We miss that light and always will, His vacant place there is none to fill, Down here we mourn, but not in vain, For up in heaven we will meet again.

6th Anniversary of Ellen (Nellie) Chester, late of Lower Newtown, Waterford who died on the 13th October 2013. Anniversary Mass Saturday 12th October at 6.15pm St Johns Church. God called your name so gently, That only you could hear, No one heard the footsteps, Of the angels drawing near, Softly from the shadows, There came a gentle call, You closed your eyes and went to sleep, You quietly left us all. - Loved and remembered by your daughters Ann, Mary, Eileen, Catherine, Geraldine, Tina and Bernie, your son William and daughter-inlaw Teresa, your sons-in-law, grandchildren great grandchildren, sisters, sistersin-law, nieces, nephews, neighbours and friends

2ndAnniversary Jack Moore

- Your loving sister Louise. Out of our lives you may be gone, But in our hearts you still live on, No longer in our lives to share, But on our hearts you are always there. - Your loving sister Kayleigh Ann. If tear could build a stairway, And memories a lane, I’d walk right up to heaven, And bring you home again. - Your loving brother Richie.

In loving memory of Jack Moore, late of Rockenham, Ferrybank, whose 2nd anniversary occurs on October 17th. Mass offered on Sunday 13th October at 11:30 in The Sacred Heart Church, Ferrybank. Those we love don’t go away, They walk beside us everyday, Unseen, unheard, but always there. Loved and remembered always, Rest in Peace Jack. - Missed so much by your wife Maura, your sons Brian, Kieran, Declan and Colm, your daughters-in-law Margaret, Petra and Angela and your grandchildren Adam, Aimee, Callum, Jack and Lewis. . Novena to the Sacred Heart Dear Heart of Jesus, in the past I have asked for many favours, this time I ask for this one special favour (mention favour). In loving memory of Bridget Whelan, late of Newport Terrace, whose 3rd anniversary occurs on the 16th October. Mass will be held at 11:30 on 20th October in Ballybricken Church. Deep in my heart lies a picture, More precious than silver or gold, It’s a picture of my wife, Whose memory I’ll always hold. I lost a wife with a heart of gold, How much I miss her, Can never be told, She shared my troubles, And helped me along, If I follow her footsteps, I will never go wrong. It broke our hearts to lose you, But you didn’t go alone, For part of us went with you, The day God called you home. You left us peaceful memories, your love is still our guide. And though we cannot see you, You are always by our side. - From your husband Tom Although we smile, And make no fuss, No one misses you, More than us, And when old times we do recall, That’s when we miss you most of all. - From your son and daughters, Catherine, Eleanor, Bernadette, Frances, Anne, Thomas and Theresa They say there is a reason, They say that time will heal, But neither time nor reason, Will change the way we feel, For no one knows the heartache, That lies behind our smiles, No one knows how many times, We have broken down and cried, We want to tell you something, So there won’t be any doubt, You’re so wonderful to think of, But so hard to live without. - From all your grandchildren and great grandson

You left this world so quickly, We still wonder why, For the saddest part of all, You never said goodbye. You left us so many memories, To us you were so dear, No matter when we needed you, We always found you near. You gave us all you had to give, Gifts both big and small, But most of all you gave us love, The greatest gift of all. - From your loving husband Tom, children Keith, Caroline and Elaine & partners, grandchildren and great grandsons.

38th Anniversary DUNCAN MCARA

In loving memory of Duncan McAra, late of 134 Hennessys Road, who died on 10th October 1981. Lonely is the home without you, Life to us is not the same, All the world would be like heaven, If we could have you back again. What he suffered he told but few, He did not deserve what he went through. Tired and weary he made no fuss, But tried so hard to stay with us - Always remembered by your loving sons, daughters, grandsons and grand daughters.

Novena to the Sacred Heart Dear Heart of Jesus, in the past I have asked for many favours, this time I ask for this one special favour (mention favour). Take it Dear Jesus and place it within Your own broken heart, where Your Father sees it. Then in His merciful eyes it will become Your favour and not mine. Say this prayer for 3 days. You grew up Luke, And proved to be A man both fair and true, And every day throughout my life, I will always think of you -Missing you everyday bro, Donnamarie and Brother-in-Law Paul There is not a day that goes by, That you’re not on my mind, I’ve wiped away so many tears, I’ve almost gone blind, I try so hard to move on with my life, You’d better be up there buddy, Looking after me, the kids, and the wife, That call in the night I’ll never forget, When our poor mother told me with deepest regret, My little brother was gone Your life cut too short, You’re in my heart always bro, You’re in every thought. - Love Wesley and Anne, Will & Saoirse My brother, my friend God made you leave, My heart my soul, Forever shall grieve,

You had so much life, to give and to share, And so many qualities, That were exceptionally rare, To bust out a workout, In the Kingfisher club, Or sink a few pints, In the Candy Store pub, In you and your dreams, I always believed, I was so proud, of all you achieved, But now that you’re gone, I’m covered in gloom, Sadness and sorrow, Each day I consume, Dear brother of mine, I wished for this never, My love for you, Shall be here forever. - Love from Canada, Dale and Jenn. Our fun trips to the park, bringing our bikes up the track, We wish we could have Our Uncle Luke back. Now we close our eyes and think of you near, our special angel, watching over us here. - Lots of love and hugs, your godson Rhys and nephew Morgan . Deep in our hearts lies a picture of my Grandson Luke, Whom I love and miss so much, Wishing he was here with us today. - Your heartbroken Grandad Sackie . Luke, No matter how life changes, No matter what we do, A special place within our hearts, Is always kept for you. - Love and miss you everyday, Your Aunt Vivian, brother in law and family. Those we love don’t go away, They walk beside us everyday, Unseen, unheard, but always near, Still loved, still missed, still very dear. - Love Uncle Kevin, Therèse and Jack Missing you always Luke. - Gran, Aunts, Uncles & Cousins

When tomorrow starts without me, And I’m not here to see, If the sun should rise and find your eyes, Are filled with tears for me. I wish so much you wouldn’t cry, The way you did today, While thinking of the many things, We didn’t get to say. I know how much you love me, I know you will miss me too. When tomorrow starts without me, Don’t think we’re far apart, For everytime you think of me, I’m right here in your heart. - Loved and remembered by Mam, Dad, Emmett & Ellen.

In loving memory of Walter Grey, late of 8 Leamy St, who died on Wednesday 11th of October 2017. Perhaps if I could see, The splendour of the land, To where my friend was called, I’d understand, Perhaps I could hear, The welcome you received, From old familiar voices, I would not grieve, Perhaps if I knew the reason, Why you went, I’d smile and wipe away the tears that flow, I’ll wait content forever. - From Alan Mac. Long is the road to yesterday, That leads us back to you, And memories of us together And happy times we knew, We shared so much together, Laughter, joy & tears, For us who thought so much of you. They were our happiest years Nothing can replace you, Nothing ever will, In life we loved you dearly, In death we love you still, - From your loving sister Bernie. A little token small and tender, Just to say we still remember, No matter how life changes, No matter what we do, A special place in our hearts, Is always kept for you. - Love nieces and nephews Jayo, Robert, Emma, Kathleen, Sasha and Christian xx.

There is always a face before me, A voice I would love to hear, A smile I will always remember, Of a brother I loved so dear, Deep in my heart lies a picture, More precious than silver or gold, it’s a picture of my brother, Whose memory will never grow old. - Always in my thoughts, your brother Johnny, sister in law Betty. Softly from the shadows You heard a gentle call Taking the hand of Jesus You quietly left us all, No special day is needed, For us to think of you, You will never be forgotten, For we thought the world of you, There is not night without a dawning, No winter without a spring, And beyond deaths dark horizon, Our hearts once more will sing, For those who leave us for a while, Have only gone away, Out of a restless careworn world, Into a brighter day. - Sadly missed, your niece Kathleen, Gary, Scott, Katelyn and Aleasha. o holy st anthony Gentlest of saints, your love for God and charity for your neighbour, made you worthy while on earth to possess miraculous powers. Today is your birthday, Without candles and cake, And since you are not with me, I will not celebrate, I cannot send you a birthday card, Your hands I cannot touch, So I ask God to give a message, To the one I love so much, And grant me one wish, And make it come true, To have His choir of Angels sing, Happy Birthday to you. - Forever in my thoughts, from your loving dad Martin, sister Abigail, brother Aaron, daughter Amberly and Michelle

53rd Anniversary ELLEN BURKE In loving memory of Ellen Burke, Railway Cottage, Bath St. who died 14th October 1966 What she suffered, She told but few, She did not deserve, What she went through, Tired and weary she made no fuss, But tried so hard to stay with us, Two tired eyes are sleeping, Two willing hands are still, The one that worked so hard for us, Is resting at God’s will, Our lips cannot tell what to say, But God only knows, How much we miss her, In our home that is lonely today, She bade no last farewell, She raised her hand to none, Her spirit flew before we knew, That from us she had gone, Your life was love and labour, Your love was your family true, You did your best for all of us, We will always remember you. - Always remembered by her loving family Willie, Paul, Danny, Peggy, Stacia, Vicky, Breda and extended family.

Her smiling way and pleasant face Are such a pleasure to recall Her kindly words for each of us She died much loved by all. Some day we will meet again Some day we know not when To clasp her hand in the Promised Land Never to part again. - Always loved and remembered by her sisters Bridie & Kitty, nieces and nephews, the O’Sullivan Family and her school friends Miraculous prayer Dear Heart of Jesus, in the past I have asked for many favours, this time I ask for this one special favour (mention favour). Wildcats win absolute thriller

O’Connor buries Saints Waterford picked up another 3 valuable points on the road as they completely out played St. Pats at Richmond Park on Friday night last. Blues striker Michael O’Connor was the man of the match as he scored twice and his over all play throughout the ninety minutes was exceptional. The first attack came with only 25 seconds on the clock inside the opening 25 seconds by Paul Eliott w h e n W a l t e r Figueira picked up the ball out of the left-side of the penalty area and took on two defenders as he burst into and Latvian referee Edgar the box, he then produced a Malcevs pointed to the spot. WIT Wildcats Jasmine Walker has Fr.Matthews Chantelle Alford to beat. Pic: Noel Brown Saturday night entertainment couldn’t get any better than this for a packed Mercy sports hall who saw their favourites WIT WILDCATS win with a 80 points to 77 victory over Cork rivals Fr Matthews B.C. The visitors were favourites to take the points here but again the big guns tumbled in the Wildcats den where the noise level was unreal from the start to a nerve racking final buzzer. From the tip off Wildcats started at a ferocious pace and raced into a 24-18 lead at the end of the first quarter. Indeed the home side should have been further in front but failure to finish handy opportunities cost them at least 8 points. It was score for score for a time until co captains Steph O’Shea and Jasmine Walker hit a purple patch to extend Wildcats advantage to 49-38 by the break. From the restart things got even better with young guns Debbie Ogayemi and Abbey Flynn making massive contributions to put Wildcats up by 20 points. Fr Matthews took a time out to settle and switched American Chantel Alford to the point guard position slowing the game down in search of big outside shots. This worked to perfection and in spite of Wildcats working tirelessly in defence, Fr Matthews blitzed the Wildcats net with 5 consecutive three pointers to close the gap to just 5 points. Gradually the Cork outfit edged their way to leave a single point between the teams 61-60 with the final quarter to play. At this point the roof was lifting off the Mercy sports hall due the noise of the incredible support. Wildcats were finding scores difficult to come by while once again Cork’s sharp shooters left the home net smoking with more incredible three pointers. They hit a total of eleven from down town on the night.

Now trailing by 3 point with 6 minutes remaining, could Wildcats come back? You bet they could as Walker, O’Shea and Kavanagh high three in a row. Now Wildcats were up by three points and hanging on before Sinead Deegan hit a massive three pointer which rocked the neighbourhood. Time out Fr Matthews with just a minute and 35 seconds to play. Two outside shots thankfully came off the rim and Steph O’ Shea ripped away the rebounds. Wildcats were playing keep ball and running down the clock before one from two on the free throw line and a quality basket from Grainne Dwyer left just three between the teams with 26 seconds to play. Time out Wildcats as coaches Jillian Hayes and Trish Nolan gave their final instructions. Swift movement of the ball saw Wildcats keep possession and shoot with four seconds to the final buzzer. The breaking ball fell to the opposition who had one last chance to save the game. As the long range pass sat in the hands of hot shot Alford the buzzer sounded. The American shot not hearing the buzzer. Indeed such was the noise nobody heard it and when the last gasp effort blitzed the Wildcats net the visitors thought it was level only to see the table officials frantically waving that time was up before the shot went up. Fr Matthews coaches and players were jumping all over the referees claiming the shot was in good time but the referees indicated that time was indeed up and Wildcats players and supporters gasped a massive sigh of relief. However as the excitement settles Wildcats will be aware they have a serious challenge ahead of them away to DCU in the capitals North side at 2.30pm this Sunday . Go Wildcats !!!

Two goal hero Michael O’Connor celebrates in front of the Blues fans against St. Pats at Richmond Park on Friday night last. the strike over the bar. St. Pats sub Jack Walker had the first chance of the second half on 54 minutes when Conor Clifford robbed Tom Holland before setting up the attacker, but Matt Connor saved comfortable. The Blues should have put the game to bed with a second goal on 77 minutes when Michael O’Connor played a pass from inside his own half to release Zack Elbouzedi out on the right before continuing his run

into the box, Elbouzedi pulled the ball back but O’Connor was off balance and he scooped the ball over bar. O’Connor made amends for that miss when he doubled the lead with a brilliant header four minutes later. Kevin Lynch’s quick thinking from a free kick set up Shane Duggan, who played in Sam Bone out on the right and when the cross came in O’Connor out jumped his marker to head powerfully into the net from eight yards.

De la Salle bid to stop Gunners

On Sunday next at Walsh Park, reigning champions Ballygunner will bid to complete six in a row when they face De La Salle in what is expected be an engrossing Senior Hurling Final. Both teams have come through their respective group and knockout stages in impressive fashion. The champions will go in as slight favourites but there is no doubt but the Stephen Street outfit are well equipped to wrestle away the mantle. In their respective semifinals Ballygunner were hugely impressive in their defeat of Dungarvan while De La Salle faced a tough challenge from Mount Sion before a strong finish settled the contest. With a good supply from the midfield pairing of Michael Mahony and Billy O’Keeffe the champions will look to the scoring power of Pauric Mahony, Peter Hogan and the returned Dessie Hutchinson to see them through to that elusive sixth. Their last final meeting saw Ballygunner victors on a 2-18 to 0-16 scoreline. De La Salle, winners in 2008/2010/2012 carry a wealth of experience and strength in their half back line with Shane McNulty and the Morans, Kevin and Tom hoping to dominate the area and leaving forwards

Jake Dillon, Jack Fagan, Eddie Meaney and co to finish off the job. Incidentally in 2010 De La Salle beat Ballygunner 3-13/111. This match-up has all the ingredients of a close and thrilling encounter for what will surely be a bumper crowd at the Keane’s Road venue. Let’s hope the weather plays it’s part. FOOTBALL SEMIS The semi finals of the County Senior Football championship were compketed in Fraher Field on Sunday last and at the con-

It was really tough conditions for Tramore’s Allanah Jones and Butlerstown’s Rachael Walshe to try and play camogie in on Saturday last in the WIT Arena. Pic: Noel Brown clusion it was Ballinacourty and Rathgormack who came through. The latter, going for their tenth senior win will be hoping to take back the Conway Cup which they last held in 1999 (beat Stradbally 1-9 to 0-9). Ballinacourty on the other hand will be looking to reclaim the laurels, having previously held the cup in 2013. On Sunday Rathgormack put in a storming sixty odd minutes to defeat Stradbally 0-14 to 0-8 having led at the break 0-7 to 0-3 with some outstanding points from the very impressive

Conor Murray. Ballinacourty on the other hand faced another huge game against reigning champions Nire. This was an even bigger challenge after six minutes as Dylan Guiry goaled for the Ballymacarbry outfit to lead 1-1 to 0-1. However some magnificent shooting from David Looby saw Ballinacourty ahead 0-10 to 1-4 at the break. Nire drew level midway through the second half but it was Ballinacourty with a powerpacked final quarter who came through on a 0-16 to 1-9 scoreline.
