Campaign Updates NEW HORIZONS The School has taken the decision to raise our campaign target from $27 million to $30 million, based on the unprecedented success of this campaign, the generosity of our major donors, and the motivation that remains across our community.

M I L L E R FA M I LY C H A L L E N G E We are excited to announce that due to the generosity of the Miller Family, EVERY gift from now until the end of 2022 will be matched dollar-for-dollar up to $1M.

Waterford Rises is already a historic campaign and we have raised an amount that is unparalleled in the School’s history. We are now asking you, as a community, to join that effort so that we can support the campaign priorities to their full potential and safeguard our investment in an economic climate of rising construction costs.

This is your chance to double the impact of your gift and ensure that you are part of this historic campaign that will support current students and leave a legacy for the entire community.

RECOGNIZING YOUR GENEROSITY All gifts over $1,000 will be recognized on a prominent donor wall as a testament to the support of the entire Waterford community in this generational campaign. Located in the new Student Commons, this recognition will represent the impact your gift will have on today’s students and all those who follow.

What’s Next SCIENCE CENTER Click here to watch an incredible video documenting the first stage of construction. Work has gathered pace since the first ceremonial shovel of earth was moved at the site of the new Science Center. Throughout the summer the construction site was humming with activity, with the concrete foundations and bioswale earthwork put in place. The geothermal drilling, an exciting element of the building’s forwardlooking renewable energy design profile, is well underway and will be completed by August 2023.

Students signed the final steel beam for the Science Center project and watched the topping-off ceremony, October 2022.

As the new school year began, students were able to see the footprint and shell of the new building for the first time and will be able to watch throughout the year as pillar-by-pillar this spectacular structure emerges. Witnessing the construction process unfold will in itself be a lesson in science, sustainability and technology.

• Nature Lab - a space to store, explore, and display natural specimens • Observation Deck - viewing deck overlooking the new turf field and the Wasatch Mountains • Mud Room - threshold space for use by the Outdoor Program

The project remains on schedule and will open for the new school year in 2023.

Construction of the Student Commons is due to begin in July 2023 with the building scheduled to open in August, 2024. The final building will incorporate: • Reception - the welcoming ‘front door’ to our campus • Dining Hall - the central gathering space of the Commons • Meeting Spaces - bookable spaces for a range of student and staff activities • Dean’s Offices - an accessible location for the Deans in the Commons • Kitchen - central catering facility serving the dining hall

SCIENCE CENTER

The final building will incorporate: • Science Commons - to serve as the entrance and connective backbone of the building • Makerspace - a space for multidisciplinary creation and experimentation • Classrooms - core learning spaces to teach the science fundamentals, including an advanced biology lab • Faculty Room - a space for science faculty that’s accessible for students

Waterford Rises Q&A WITH ANDREW MENKE, HEAD OF SCHOOL Waterford Rises has already raised Over $25 Million - why is it important to support the campaign in the public phase? As we enter the public phase we are asking the entire community of Waterford parents, alumni, faculty, staff and friends to achieve something remarkable and to push us beyond our historic campaign goal of $30 million. Every single dollar raised is critical to support the school’s future! Commitments to the campaign are a testament to exceptional teaching, talented students and a deep belief in our liberal arts mission. We want every Waterford family to be a part of this historic opportunity and to share our pride in what we will achieve through Waterford Rises. Will this campaign support projects other than the Science Center?

Photo of Andrew Menke at Waterford’s First Friday. Photo by Heather Mortenson. What does this campaign mean for the future of Waterford? Waterford Rises is the most significant campaign in our School’s history. Through this campaign we are carrying forward the values and aspirations that have made Waterford exceptional to shape the School’s future. This campaign will deliver world class science and technology education, transform the student experience, and ensure that our faculty and students enjoy worldclass resources that elevate and inspire exceptional teaching and learning. I have heard about the dual campaign this year - What is the difference between Waterford Rises (the capital campaign) and the Waterford Fund? Both the campaign and the annual fund are critical to supporting Waterford’s future. We are asking families to continue to contribute to the Waterford Fund but to also consider an additional gift to Waterford Rise (the capital campaign). The annual Waterford Fund is vital to core activities, program enrichment, and school development. The Capital Campaign represents an exceptional opportunity to support vital infrastructure investment to ensure that we can continue to provide a world class educational experience.

The Science Center is central to our vision, and represents the largest single campaign funding commitment - but our vision goes beyond this. The campaign will also bring to life a new heart of campus and dining experience in the Student Commons, a new turf field for athletics, and grow our endowment to support student access and teacher growth. Taken together these projects will revolutionize our campus and take our school into the next generation. What has made this campaign so successful? The combination of responsible planning and bold innovation has inspired donors about the potential of transformative giving at Waterford. Every campaign donor has stretched to meet the scope and scale of our vision, and we are asking all in our community to do the same. Such giving is a recognition of the trust and esteem in which this School is held and demonstrates the importance of this School for our entire community. Is this Campaign just for current Waterford Families? The facilities our students rely on now are the direct result of the generosity and commitment of those who have gone before and we are asking our community to make that same commitment to Waterford’s future. Some of our most generous campaign contributions have come from parents and grandparents of alumni in recognition of everything they gained from being part of this community. I hope that this campaign resonates and connects with all members of our community, and forms part of that common thread that knits together successive generations at the School.

Endowment S E C U R I N G WAT E R FO R D ’ S F U T U R E By Todd Winters, Asst. Head of School for Enrollment and Institutional Advancement Waterford Rises goes beyond supporting the critical infrastructure needs of our School, to supporting the people who breathe life into those buildings - our students and our faculty.

“It’s important to have talented, motivated and curious students of all backgrounds at Waterford. A strong endowment allows us to expand student access, thereby diversifying our community in ways that afford all members of our school the opportunity for the deepest forms of intellectual, emotional and character growth.”

An endowment is a critical, but often misunderstood, philanthropic practice. An endowment is the school’s long-term savings account. The endowment is forever, providing a guarantee for the financial future of Waterford School. It is a managed resource that creates financial stability and which is actively put to work to fund critical priorities and programs related to student access and faculty development.

NANCY WOLLER Math, Liberal Arts Teaching Chair and Heuston Endowed Chair

Supporting a well-resourced endowment is vital for our School’s future in: Securing Sustainable Success: A responsible and well-stewarded endowment is a key pillar to Waterford’s long-term financial sustainability. Leaving a Legacy: an endowment gift is a gift that keeps on giving, for both the donor and the school. The endowment fund grows over time through managed investment and fundraising. Delivering Impact: endowment gifts can be directed to areas that matter to you - whether you want to support student access or professional development for teachers, you can ensure your gift underwrites your area of interest. While the corpus of the Waterford endowment grows in perpetuity, the growth of the endowment permits a small draw annually (from the interest on the growth of the principal) to support the following investments:

• Faculty training and professional development to support educational excellence • Increased support for students from diverse socioeconomic backgrounds making the promise of a Waterford education possible for more students • Securing financial stability in the face of economic flux A robust endowment is a critical foundation for fiscal responsibility and a well managed and resourced endowment lets us make bold plans for the future with renewed confidence.
