Hybrid / Distance Learning Expectations
WPS will strive for a 50% synchronous learning environment for hybrid at-home and distance learners in accordance with state guidelines as outlined in the CSDE Plan for Reimagining Connecticut Classrooms for Continuous Learning. Our synchronous learning model will be age-appropriate and will consider the developmental capabilities of all students. Teachers will deliver synchronous learning to meet the developmental and instructional needs of students. Teachers/Schools will determine the ratio of asynchronous/synchronous that best supports the learning outcomes and learning targets while meeting students’ needs. Synchronous learning delivery will be utilized to provide our students access to direct instruction and will not last entire days nor entire class periods. Synchronous learning is designed to be the direct teaching the teacher does with the students so they understand the lesson. Students would then do the lesson’s independent work asynchronously, while the teacher meets with small groups of students. Asynchronous instruction will also be provided to ensure equitable access. Students will be provided access to instruction through a synchronous audio live stream, teacher screen share, and/or video via Zoom. Classes will typically have a live component transitioning to small group, peer-focused or independent work throughout the day. The teacher will provide a detailed schedule in advance that will be followed for both in-school and at home learning; that will be specific about times when the whole class, small groups, or individual students should be engaged in live classroom activities. This will allow parents and guardians to plan accordingly. Students will use a learning management system (Google Classroom, See Saw) to access their assignments and assessments. Students will be able to access most, if not all, of our digital products and resources with ClassLink which is one username and password for all. More detailed instructions on ClassLink will be forthcoming. Students in hybrid at-home or full distance learning will have embedded opportunities to step away from their devices for movement breaks. Additional strategies, including hard copy materials, manipulatives, and other learning tools can be considered for those students not meeting with success in the digital format. We encourage all parents to utilize free resources on the CT Learning Hub to supplement what is being provided during hybrid at-home and distance learning days. The CT Learning Hub can be found at: https://portal.ct.gov/SDE/Academic-Office/CT-Learning-Hub It is very important to maintain communication with your child’s teacher so that your child can be successful. As always, our team stands ready to make this a positive experience as we all face these new challenges together.
TERMS AND DEFINITIONS Distance Learning - This model allows teachers to collaborate with students to provide engaging learning opportunities while schools remain closed. There are two models for Distance Learning: Synchronous: Students and teachers are working together and interacting in a digital space concurrently. Asynchronous: Teachers post educational opportunities online. Students engage with the learning opportunities and work at their own pace within a given timeframe
