Another new toy: Combative Edge M-1 tactical folder. A knife you NEED to own.

Ok, this is one serious knife, and it has exceeded all of my expectations. So much so that I am going to do something I haven't done in years... a review (of sorts), so go make a sandwich, grab a pillow, and relax... this'll take a while.

A couple of months ago I was on the prowl looking to get back into knife collecting. Not only collecting, but buying some for use as well. During that time of stockpiling, a fellow WG member posted up about a buddy of his who had just started up a new brand, and they only had ONE model. The name was "Combative Edge" and the knife was the M-1. So I shot on over to CombativeEdge.com to check it out. I saw very little info, and one lonely, and notso-helpful picture:

Ok, so to me it LOOKED a bit like a production Emerson. I was intrigued, but didn't buy that night. Soon after I forgot about it and could not for the life of me remember the name.. luckily last week I researched and found it.

I decided WTH, I'm just gonna do it. It's about the same $ as a production Emerson, so I hope it lives up to that.

Well my friends, what I got was the biggest surprise I have ever gotten on any knife purchase. It was larger than expected, wider than expected, slimmer in the grip than I expected, and the fit/finish puts it BEYOND a production Emerson, past a semi-custom Emerson... up into a good $500 or more tactical folder. The fit and finish is astounding for the price.

The blade shape is awesome. Couldn't tell it from the website pic, so I was very surprised.

I am a tanto fan beyond all else, but if I go with a drop-point or clip-point, I want a lot of belly to the blade, and this one sure has it. But it also has some nice angled geometry like you would see on a good tanto, plus a nice false edge at the top towards the tip that really sets off the look.

The grind is impressive, and it is quite sharp.

The blade steel is N690, which should promise to be very tough.

Get a look at the massive size of this bad boy..........

The G10 scales have been done well. Just grippy enough, but not too rough. We'll get back to that in a minute.... first I want to show the biggest part that threw me off and made me so happy....

On their website, you don't see the other side of the knife:

Not only was I pleasantly surprised to see a Titanium frame, but the best part... it's not a linerlock, it's a framelock!

The matte/beadblasted finish of the Ti looks great and feels nice in the hand. The pocketclip is reversible (thank God, I HATE tip-down carry), and sits low in the pocket.

Blade lockup is as solid as a $1000 custom knife. Astonishing... no blade play in any direction.

The jimping on the topside is done perfectly. Perfect purchase when gripping the knife, but not like running your hand over a sawtooth... nicely done.

Another great surprise that I didn't notice from their photo: IT'S A FLIPPER which is what I prefer right now.

Completely manual action, but the flipper bump is just the right size so that when you hit it right, the blade whips out with the lightest of wrist-action to help it along. The blade retention inside the handle is perfect... it won't fly out unexpectedly, but when you either hit the thumbstud or flipper and whip it over... it will fling right out on command.

Another part I love is the deep groove or concave in the G10 side:

This allows your forefinger the perfect place to lay, at an angle, comfortably when holding the knife. In reverse-hold it still perfectly works for your hand... it is a wonderful feeling in the hand.

The knife is also ambidextrous due to the dual thumbstuds and the cutaway to reach the studs easily in the Ti side.

So the knife fits perfectly in the hand, deploys into action lightning fast, has a safe and secure grip with tacky G10 without feeling like sandpaper, has a flipper stud to allow for easier opening (which doubles as a finger guard so you don;t push your hand up into the blade), has a near perfect 50/50 balance in the hand, is slim & easy to carry, has the fit/finish of a knife easily 3X it's price.... and yet very few people even know about them yet.

IMO you should grab one NOW before everyone figures out how great they are and the prices go up.

Much less of a review than it was just a commentary on how bad-ass this knife is. I greatly anticipate their future designs... I will be 1st in line. __________________

I'm glad to see someone jumped in and bought one. I truly in my heart of hearts believe that this might just be the next "big" thing.

I contacted the owner (Rob) and told him the same thing.

Can you imagine getting in on the bottom floor of what COULD be something as great and revered as say a Sebenza? A CQC? A Delica? Household names to those who love knives... and who knows, this one could be there someday, and we may be some of the first to know about them. That's exciting to me.

Magie: Knowing you as I do, I'll say this... you really should consider grabbing one. I believe it would prove to be one of your top favorites and a daily carry. It's THAT nice.

I'm so excited about it, I offered to give the owner my images license-free to put up on his site so folks could better see what was being offered. I don't EVER do that, but I like to support good people, and he seems ike a good guy, and in this economy... starting up a new business is TOUGH. Not everyone can go out and spend $200-$400 per image from a product photographer (yes, that's what you'd typically pay). __________________

Hey J.S. completely agree with Magster on this assessment! When you have a passion for something you both do your homework and deliver the passion in your presentation of what ever it is that you are interested in, to the umth degree! I do enjoy the hobby ( low end as compared to what I've seen both you and others show) but not to the level that you entertain. I do recall you putting out a thread a couple of weeks ago elluding to your interest in a particular knife that a geek had speculated about. And if I recall the thread you did not get to many leads to pursue your treasure hunt so I'm glad to see that you were able to skulk out your knife! Congrats. on finding it and thanks for the world class review on a phenomenal tribute to the art of knife making! __________________

Thanks for the info Jim it looks good ,I'm thinking about it. I can't figure out from the photos how the frame lock works. The only other thing I am hesitant about is thier choice of steel. It is listed as an Austrian steel comperable to 440c steel. Not really a premium steel, but it sure looks good. __________________

When the blade opens fully a liner lock has part of the liner inside the frame move inward to press against the bottom/base of the blade, thereby blocking the blade open.

A frame lock works on the same principle, but a part of the frame itself moves inward when the blade opens to block the blade from closing. That's what the cut up the length of the titanium side is for, the top part of that side moves inward when the blade is fully opened.

The frame is thicker than than just the liner, so it is a stronger, surer/safer locking system.

440C is actually a pretty decent stainless blade steel, much better than 440A or B. It sharpens easily and holds it's edge fairly well.

Noooooooooo, not comparable at all to crappy 440. There seems to be a lot of misinformation out there regarding N690. Take a read here: http://www.knifeforums.com/forums/sh...hp?tid/781911/ And some custom knifemakers chime in to answer that guys' question in detail that I can't begin to do.

Needless to say, it is TOUGH stuff.

And a framelock is "best" because as you hold the knife, it applies even more pressure to keep the blade locked.

When you open the knife, the section of the frame you see there slides over, and locks the blade open. As you grip, you push that even tighter. To release the blade to close it, simply push it over to the side.

A linerlock operates in much the same manner, but it is always a slim piece of metal, that can bend or break, and may not engage as fully as this framelock does. __________________

I don't know what their return policy is honestly, but I can tell you that if you have high expectations, this knife will exceed them. When it arrives you'll forget about half the other knives you own, or ever wanted to own.

I'm still on a high from buying a $1400 Strider custom last week, and my newest $500 Strider a few days ago.. guess what's clipped inside my pocket right now??? That's right, my little ole $200 M1 __________________

I couldn't resist a good thing, so I ordered one. Jim thanks for the steel forum discussion. I have dropped a knife made of 154cm with a very fine point onto a ceramic tile floor and broke the tip, but with the pics you supplied I can tell the blade looks thick, and point strong. __________________

That could happen to about any smaller sized folding knife (except maybe a Strider due to

their excessively thick blades), but I don't think you'll have anything to complain about with this M1.

Thanks again, Brian Glad to hear it. Seems like a few members are picking these up... I hope to hear some reports back soon on how you all like them.

I cannot stop flipping mine, this knife is more amazing each time I touch it. I haven't been this excited for a while, and especially because it didn't cost $400, $500, $800 to get such a quality piece. For $200, I cannot think of a single better knife. __________________

I flipped my clip today and threw a custom lanyard on it and now she is set for EDC. I anticipate this being one of my most carried knives.

What's funny is that you typically spend time breakinga folder in. Opening and closing over and over and over breaking in the action to smooth it out, and to get the framelock to lockup more. Plus you do it to familiarize yourself with the action of each particular knife.

Not with this one... it is smooth as butter out of the box, and it seems to just fall into my hand and works with my movements perfectly. I am beyond happy. I wish they made more than one model.... __________________

Great photos as always! I went to the site and was really impressed. That's it, I love my knife so much that I have been in contact with the owner of the company, and we are going to work on a collaboration now. I will be creating a "Jim Skelton" edition of this amazing knife. I could likely have just done a knife on my own, but I love this brand's quality and am honored to be able to do a collab with them.

I got my Combative Edge M-1 tactical folder on saturday, and have had it with me ever since. It is everything Jim said it is. It has a very thin profile which is good since I carry my knives in my waistband , not my pocket. This is the first knife I have gotten with a flipper to open it, and a frame lock, which is very strong , but is a pain to release if you want to play with the knife . I'll post pictures of my collection soon. __________________

I'm glad to hear that you love it! Yes, framelocks are the strongest, and do take a while to break in... but are the safest. __________________

I received a call this morning from Rob, the owner of Combative Edge, wanting to know what I think of the knife. That was a first. I've bought cars and diden't a call. Nice guy. I asked him if it was ok to use Metal Glo on the blade without damageing the finish on the blade and he said no problem. I had used Blue Lube and it streaked the blade. I tried the Metal Glo and it looks great.

Jim when you collaberate, remember us little people that can't afford 500.00 knives. Don't take the company too far uptown. When it comes to knife and watch collecting you are the "Jay Leno" of collectors.

So far I have heard back from 4 people who got theirs, and all 4 had the exact same things to say about it that I did... all were blown away. I am eager to hear more stories as these

land.

I have submitted my 1st design to Rob, let's see if he approves (afterall, it is HIS company, LOL), and the price should not go up much for my design. I have some tactical ideas and some dressier ideas as well... we'll see what comes of them. __________________

Said and done! I ordered the serrated version! I'm also some what fascinated about there tactical training based on use of hand held weaponry, that there site indicates that they have available for patrons of there site? I have a pretty heavy martial arts background myself and I would be fascinated to see what there variations would entail as opposed to what I've been able to absorb from my own previous knowledge in regards to weaponry! But I will probably never be able to realize that fascination based on the distance one would have to travel in order to find that knowledge ! I will however be looking forward to seeing this M-1 in person. So thanks J.S. Now you've got my disposable income going in two different directions! But for some reason, especially in this case. Good news!!

Rob likes my design and has approved it! We will take the next steps for renderings and prototypes after he returns from the BLADE Show, and hopefully it will be ready soon after.

I am excited beyond words, this will be my first knife design, and I know collaborating with Rob will be great because my design will be backed up by his excellent quality craftsmanship. I am honored that Rob has allowed me to do this.. I can't wait!!

I will let y'all know as things progress, but it would likely be end of Summer at the earliest before they could be ready. Assuming Rob approves of more than one variation, I plan to have a couple of versions of this one knife, and that would cover a couple price points as well.

If this is a success, i have a couple more ideas for different designs for the future. Wish me luck! __________________

Hey Jim, got my M1 today and man you were soooo right on about this knife! I can't stop flicking it and playing with it....smoothe as butter. Had one little issue with a screw when I changed the clip around and emailed Rob. He called me on my cell about 2 hours later and said new screws in the mail today! We had a great conversation about various fighting styles and weapons. I mentioned I got my inspiration to buy the knife from your photos and review. He told me he has been talking to you alot lately. Now I can't wait for your Tanto!

The M1 is my first foray into the world of knives. Jim, I ordered one simply based on your enthusiasm and awesome review. I received it in the mail today, and I sincerely agree--it is an outstanding piece, very strong yet very light, and the quality and fit/finish is superb. Now I know what draws you all into collecting these instruments!

And to top it off, I got a phone call from Rob asking me how I liked it. Wow! I could hardly believe it, the company founder actually calling his customer! I told Rob that I was a member here and that I bought it on your recomendation, and thanked him for producing a first rate product. Jim, he mentioned your collaboration--that is way cool, will certainly look forward to it. Now the question--could there ever be a Combative Edge/watch collaboration?! That would really take things up a few notches.

Way to go John, for a first knife purchase you skipped over a sea of lesser knives. I too relied on Jims review because I know he has many custom knives , and knows when he is getting a good bang for his buck. Yes, we are excited about the collaboration, my version of a tanto is quite aggressive and should make a lotta hardcore guys very happy.

We have also discussed a watch/knife collab as well, so we will soon be working on a Combative Edge watch, most likely to be made by Invicta with a team-effort design between Eyal, myself and Rob. __________________

To those that have one already, do you know what size the screws are that hold the belt clip? I'm trying to flip the clip to the other end but the screws are so small. I have a 1/16 and 1.5mm allen wrench and they're still not small enough. __________________

Okay, I just ordered the M1 w/serrated edge. Should have it early next week.

I'm not even a knife guy! I do own some knives, nothing fancy, since I used to be an avid hunter/outdoorsman. I do not collect knives, but I can certainly appreciate a fine knife or gun. Jim's review pushed me over the edge (no pun intended, hahaha) on this one.

DAMMIT Jim - first watches, now knives! What else are you going to get me to start buying?

Just received this today...

WOW!! What a knife! Just got my M1 serrated today. I never owned a really high quality knife before, but this one definitely fits the bill. Fit and finish are outstanding. When unfolded, it's a perfect fit in my hand. The little hollowed-out area on the handle for the index finger is a nice touch. The one side of the handle has a nice texture for a sure grip, but is not abrasive to the touch. The blade is obviously very strong, high quality steel. To top it off, I think it's the perfect size. Fairly light overall and not too big to carry in the pocket, yet large and sturdy enough to handle some serious cutting chores.

Now if I only lived in a State where I could carry it in my pocket without fear of being arrested!

I admire your many collecting hobbies, guns, rifles, knives, cars, & of course, watch collecting, i'm sure there are more things you love to collect, but with all your collections, I bet money is your favorite (I don't mean that disrespectfully) after I wrote it, I realized it might sound that way, but not what I meant! Jim, Just as everyone has said, thanks for the pictures and the review on the M1. The same as many others out there, I too am looking for a quality folder for daily carry. Have had this knife since June. I have used it hard as an everyday carry and it exceeds any and all expectations. I have used it for cutting, digging, chopping and most anything else you can think of.

Hey Jim I ordered my M-1 today, and spoke with Rob Walker..great guy..I mentioned your name and he told me a funny story...I said you turned on alot of "Watch-Geeks" to his brand,Rob stated right after you bought your M-1,and gave a review on W/G's ,,he got flooded with orders,at first he wondered why the sudden Rush on orders?? then as he spoke to the "new" customers,,he realized we were "Watch-Geeks"..lol I will let Rob,and you know what I think. Yeah, Rob is one cool dude.

I am not usually so quickly impressed on new items (C-E is a young company and this is their first model), but within 5 minutes of opening the box, I was totally taken with this knife.

After a little bit I contacted him and we began talking, and then we decided to do some collaborations together. Not only do I love my M1, but I loved it so much that I wanted to go into business with them... and I have.
