Then I got a car and started exploring, and there’s some really weird cool spots that you can’t really experience anywhere else.

Post-graduation plans: I am planning on going to Chicago, and actually, three minutes ago, I was just accepted to law school at Loyola. Favorite spot on campus and favorite memory associated with it: If it’s a nice day out, I like to sit outside of Parkside, but if it’s rainy or the weather isn’t super nice, there is a little nook in the law library. If you walk past all of the long tables right before you would walk upstairs there are two chairs sitting across from each other, and I like to read and do work there. I kept the potato and kept meaning to throw it out, and that was the one for spring break because when I up my belongings my entire room reeked of moldy rancid potato. This time of the year always surprises me…never feels like you have been here long enough to years it has been. I know your four years weren’t the typical four years — but I hope you are proud choosing WashU for your college experience and career. I couldn’t be more proud of you all! You really have battled through a lot and have been wonderful examples to the people around you. Thank you for coming in and working hard every day, adapting to our system, and buying into our culture. The impact and stamp you have left with our program will be remembered. Good luck to you all! Dear Sophia and Anke,
Thank you for all of your many contributions to WashU and the Bear tennis family throughout your four years! You have left such an impact on our program with your leadership and determination. Both of you have been immensely dedicated to your academic pursuits and have challenged yourself to maximize your learning opportunities in the classroom, on the court, and in your internships. I know you two will accomplish everything and anything you set your mind on!! I will always remember your epic battles on the court (especially Anke’s UAA clinch!), visits to Torchy’s, laughter, and pump-up playlists.
Thank you, senior bears! Remember, once a Bear, always a Bear — welcome to the WashU Bears Alumna group, and see you soon!

THANK YOU to four incredibly amazing women: Dre, Brauner, Maggie, and Riley. You make women’s soccer and all that we represent great. The path to success is rarely ever a straight line, but rather, has many twists and turns. Throughout your career, there have been many twists and turns — many of which you could not control. You chose to control what you could control and made this program one of the nation’s Elite — ranked #9 Nationally this fall!!! Each one of you showed incredible perseverance throughout your own personal journey, which led to an extremely successful

leadership — the program is better than it was when you found it. As you leave the Danforth campus, the women’s soccer family wishes you nothing but the best. You are ready to crush you are remarkable. Trust your preparations as you continue to achieve greatness. I am so very proud of each of you, and I am proud and humbled to be your coach.
          B4L, Coach Conlon.
What a ride we have had. Coming in your freshman year behind a graduated class of 6 shoes. And you have done that in both your athletic and academic careers. These big shoesed or imagined. As freshmen, your class was slammed into UAA play and into one of the toughest strength of schedules in the country. Tough games, close games, lots of Learning — and we battled through it, worked hard and found our way to seven non-conference wins this while only having three returners helping our world and your college experience forever. No summer workouts, no post-season, no enough to navigate as students and athletes, there came polarizing politics, massive racial and social injustices leading to riots, deaths, and some much-needed progress in our country. Hard stuff. A year without in-person school or basketball at all followed by a year of dealing with a classmate dying of cancer, torn ACLs, torn ligaments, injuries, concussions, journey has been full of opportunities to give up, yet each of you proved beyond resilient. You collectively worked through a lot to get to this moment — to graduate — having fought your way back to the top. A season spent and a road back to the NCAA Tournament. I could not be more proud of the work, commitstrong. We are so very grateful for our seniors. Each one of you have taught me something valuable about basketball, life, relationships, integrity, resilience, and hard work. Each one of you, in different ways, has challenged me to become a better coach, a stronger leader, and a better person. I hope that in our short time together, I was able to do a little bit of that for each of you. Thank you for your contribution, everything that has made this women’s basketball program so elite. The Bears before you would be proud of your resilience, and the Bears behind you have been blessed. Go out and attack your new adventures with the same work ethic and resilience that got you to this moment. B4L.

Dear Shiv, Armando, Matt, Hudson, Gavin, Matt,
You have been the standard bearer for our team. You walk the talk. What a keeper? Thanks for leading us.
The mantra on all teams is team- first. Self-sacrifice, do whatever is asked of you, all in for the team. Shiv, Armando, Hudson and Gavin every one of you has played striker, midfielder and in the back line and sometimes in the same game.

You have sacrificed; moving from the position where you are most comfortable to where you are most needed. Truthfully the ultimate compliment to a player: the coach (Oscar and I) believes you get the game and are able to successfully function in whatever role asked of you.
It has been a privilege, fun, and memorable. Oscar and I savor our friendships and look forward to tracking with you and seeing you in the next phase.
          Most gratefully.

    2023 Seniors,
It is hard to believe that four years are almost over. Thank you for being an integral part of the WUXCTF family and making it something very special. Each one of you has become a HIB (High Impact Bear). I believe that the trials you have experienced over the past four years have provided opportunities to serve and grow. While each one of you has a very different story, I hope each of you experienced what it means to be a part of something bigger than yourself through two teams and one family. This group has experienced the extremes of having seasons canceled, along with winning a national championship with one more season to go. I believe that over time, you will come to realize that these challenges and mountaintop experiences have each helped mold you as a person and have equipped you to become high-impact leaders in your communities and families. Know that you are loved and have a special purpose ahead of you. I am excited to see how each one of you will impact the world. You will always be a Bear, and I hope you each aspire to continue to be a High Impact Bear who leaves a legacy everywhere you go as you become the best version of yourself!
          Go Bears,
Charlie, Kevin, Liam, Nate, Jerry, Kai -
It has been a privilege to observe your growth throughout your WashU journey. Each of you made your mark on our university and our program. Our journey together was filled with countless memories and experiences that go well beyond the scoreboard. Extremely challenging circumstances revealed your character and taught lessons that usually come much later in life. You leave WashU with a support system that will be with you the rest of your life! To our original APP’s, Kai and Jerry…your selfless service to our program is appreciated beyond words.

I am excited to watch you apply your talents in myriad ways beyond WashU. Love you all!

down and temperatures rise, graduation looms closer and closer. It’s a largely bittersweet time for seniors, who are both saddened by their time at WashU coming to a close, but also excited about the precipice of a new chapter. Despite the complicated feelings that come with goodbyes, there are that seniors are ready to put behind them. Without further ado, here are a couple things seniors are ready to say goodbye to and a couple things they’re taking with them.

Restaurants on Delmar tend to be really busy during weekends while families are in town. I’d recommend trying a restaurant in the Central West End. One of my favorites is Brasserie by Niche!

A lot of restaurants around campus might be booked, but Spring in STL is gorgeous! Stop by United Provisions or another grocery store — or even get takeout from a restaurant on the loop — and head over to Art Hill in Forest Park for a picnic. It also doubles as a great location for last-minute graduation photos!

I'm a huge advocate of the Tower Grove Farmers’ Market. It's the perfect summer activity to show your parents how much St. Louis has to offer. Tower Grove offers such a wide range of goods, from pottery mugs to flowers. The vendors are nice, there are adorable dogs everywhere, and it also has great local food options. On a sunny summer Saturday morning, there's nothing better than a nice Tower Grove visit.

Are you a nerd? Is your family nerdy? Well, St. Louis' hottest club is the top floor of Olin Library. Check out this silent getaway where you can soak in the old book smell and occasionally hear a squeaky cart get pushed around. It is a paradise like no other, and a “must-see” with your parents and extended family. Just be sure to let them know that there is no seating and that the library closes earlier and earlier every single day.

The carnival has taken place in some form or shape for over a century, and is historically intertwined with both Greek life and charitable causes. This year’s ThurteenE coincided with both beautiful sunny spring weather, and a tornado warning. Student Life photographers captured both weather patterns in the pictures below.

Some students returned after starting their college life in pandemic mode, and I know, for them, the transition was not easy. To whom it may concern:

I have spent nearly four years now at Washington University. I have learned many things. I will not list them for you because that would not be interesting for you unless we were interested in the same things, and even if that were the case, you’d be better off learning them from a professor or one of your smart friends or probably even Wikipedia, than from me (a senioritis-ridden and terribly arrogant undergraduate).

I have also had many experiences. I will not list them either. You will either have similar ones, or different ones, or a combination of the two.
From the experiences you have, you will learn similar things, or different things, or both similar and different things relative to what I learned from my experiences.
But, as a senior, I’ve earned my chance to preach to the youth. More back-in-my-day-isms. Olin used to be open 24 hours all semester! BD used three a.m.!

And I’ve earned my chance to impart my wisdom unto you. One thing I learned — listen close — is that I can’t teach you anything. You’re just gonna have to do it yourself. If you start learning things about life that feel cliche, you’re probably on the right track.

    See ya, Holden

They spoke about their friendship –– one that spanned nearly all of their talks on a topic of their choosing. Most who are picked present solo, but joint talk instead –– switching back and forth between each other to tell their story.

Student Life has condensed and edited their speech for clarity.

Micah Sandman: We’re here today to a fantastic, wacky, [and] wonderful through –– and crucially, because of ––a global pandemic. We’re here to talk about our apartment, our relationship, college.
about creating joy and how crucial it is for existence in general and particularly our existence together.

IM: For a talk about joy, it might
simple. [It is] the opposite of shallow because it comes from life, which is complicated and deep. We feel that joy for us, as opposed to other forms celebration that occurs not in spite of the challenges of life, but — crucially — because of them.
takes time. It comes from a history of knowing someone and learning all of their beautiful and strange idiosyncrasies.
          Our Relationship and our Home
that encapsulates the idea that interests us: “Be joyful, though you

IM: We met freshman year during a was with friends, and she had, perhaps,
together in this space of unknown faces that seemed to know where they were and what they were doing, and we didn’t know any of that.

IM: We all know that life is hard and it’s not all fun and games. We became friends amidst a global pandemic
impacted greatly. In our time together
Our world is by no means an easy thing
grounded by our relationship and our home, and so that’s what we wanted to share with you all today.
MS: So, to turn to the topic at hand — what does joy look like in our relationship?
IM: Joy, in its simplest sense, is pure — is happiness. But I feel that this it is so much more nuanced than we make it out to be. For us, joy is about spontaneity and shamelessness. It is a feeling, but more than that, it is a practice. It is intentional, earnest, and it often requires taking a step back from all of the things that weigh us down — if only for a moment. In our relationship, Micah spontaneity. Together, we create a beautiful chaos.
We got to talking about sweet potatoes, peanut butter, and how sort of started our friendship — but that our friendship actually began to blossom.
MS: By that point, we’d all been sent home because of the pandemic. It was summer, and since WashU had
long and empty and barren. I brought some furniture from home, and we for other bits and bobs, until we had something that looked sort of like a furnished home (in the loosest sense of the term).
IM: Micah brings color and warmth and eternal sunshine to our home. She is the person who will pick a dandelion and declare it to be the most beautiful walls with crayon doodles and decides that random objects are art.
particularly in our relationship, is trust. I think that in order to truly experience pure joy, we need to trust the people we also need to trust that they will reciprocate all of these gushy feelings

IM: Between the two of us, there is always something cooking (literally), so our home is constantly infused with yummy aromas that occasionally clash.
MS: We often go on long walks on weekend mornings, and we debrief our days. We sit and talk on the couch, we sing silly songs, dinners. out to people, like a bunch of grandmas, because we are both grandmas and children at the same time.

Picture this: it is the dead of winter in St. Louis. The sky has been gray for months, and seasonal depression is in full swing (in addition to the other ongoing mental health cocktails). It is snowing hard outside, and not in a romantic way.
no idea what that means, except that it is scary and that masks make breath smell bad. We are studying, or writing a paper, or staring blankly at the screen for the 14th hour of the day.
MS: Since we can’t go to parties or see anyone or do much of anything social, about twice a week, we would turn off all of the lights, plug in our disco lights, and create our own party and dance until we legitimately get

In the grocery store, in the kitchen after a long day, when we’re making pancakes and drinking coffee in the mornings, and before we go out somewhere.
MS: But there is something larger dancing, which is this mutual understanding that at any moment in time, one of us could do something completely random and the other one would join in without a moment’s hesitation.
and left turns that life has to offer.
IM: I think it is important to note that neither one of us is a dancer. Mike has some natural tendencies toward rhythm, but I think it is fair to say that we are not winning any competitions in the near future. But that is not what about letting go and trusting each other to create something new and fun and wacky.
has taught me the importance of not taking yourself too seriously and knowing the importance of people get to a point where they start to act like kids again? It’s this understanding of the importance assesses life’s sharp edges and proceeds in admiring those edges as well as all of the amazing surprises

We have loved you from way before you were born. Through your journey, we have watched in awe, inspired by the compassionate, driven person you have become, with boundless imagination in a world that is yours to create. The word proud doesn’t do justice for how we feel about you.
The world is now at your feet. Make a difference. Keep the faith. Remember your roots. Laugh often. And remember, you miss 100% of the shots you don’t take.
