Six months ago, I wrote about fresh beginnings with a New Year, and crisp sheets of unfilled calendar pages. Now, as the days become longer and the calendar displays half of the year’s experiences and events, it is time to have another look at the routines and actions that move us towards our goals. Evaluating these routines and revisiting the “why” of our goals, helps us to clarify our vision and can fan the flames of persistence and fortitude when our goals seem unreachable. This time of year is another time of new beginnings, as many schools have recently graduated a new generation of professionals into our field, and seems a fitting time to revisit our purpose.

When I accepted the honor of serving our profession through volunteer leadership, I asked myself what I wanted to see for Washington State hygienists. What could I do to benefit our profession, and how might that contribution impact the people we provide care for? This line of thought led to visualizing a revitalization of professional excellence that continues to move us toward utilizing our full scope of knowledge and skill in any setting care is needed. Where to start felt overwhelming. With further contemplation, one theme continued to RISE UP. In order for our profession to meet progressive goals, it is imperative that dental hygienists stand together. The value of professional unity here in Washington spans almost a century with the formation of our state Association ninety-seven years ago. The knowledge of what the dental hygiene profession is capable of, both then and now, provides purpose, and inspires dogged tenacity to be a strong voice for our profession and for the health of the public. Striving to unite five thousand hygienists, between work and family life, has proven to be a considerable, yet heartwarming goal. I have been thanked this year for “leading by example” and I often joke that I lead by exhaustion. Truth be told, if you want something badly enough you will lead, and follow, by both. I have been asked if I am paid for the time that I put into this Association and the answer is yes, although not in the traditional manner. I get paid by witnessing the growth of confidence within our members and potential members. I get paid by being proud of our profession and what it represents. I get paid by the access to care we are able to provide as our profession continues to expand. I get paid through the excitement of newly emerging professionals, eager to lead our profession into the next century. It is well worth our commitment of time to work toward uniting this body of professionals. Dental Hygienists represent a significant driving force in the effort to achieve disease prevention and the improvement of overall health in America. The “pay” is substantial.
