The number of active cases of COVID-19 in the 14-county region of Kansas around Washington County has continued a downward trend and has gone below 200 cases for the first time since early July. After hitting a high of over 250 active cases in early July, the region has decreased by between 20-30 cases each week since then, to 181 cases on Tuesday. Counties to the west of Washington County have all either stayed the same or dropped, with some seeing significant drops in active cases over the last week. Cloud County went from 20 to two cases, while Republic County went from 13 to five and Mitchell County went from 12 to four.

COUNTY COMMISSION

BY CYNTHIA SCHEER Managing editor

During Monday’s Board of County Commissioners meeting commissioner David Willbrant said he had a lot of citizen contact at the fair about the pandemic and about the county unit road system. Commissioner Raleigh Ordoyne said someone against a county road unit system contacted him in the past week. The board also received a letter from Haddam inquiring about parks and rec money this year. For the past few years the board has allowed cities in the county to apply for parks and rec money, but this year, the commissioners said the fund is quite low, and they have decided not to give away any of the parks funds and to instead let the fund grow.
