Hanover wins 40-20 over Clifton-Clyde in sudden battle of undefeateds After both teams lose opponents to COVID, game coordinated just hours before kickoff

BY DAN THALMANN Publisher

HANOVER – After both Hanover and Clifton-Clyde found themselves without a football game on Friday (Hanover was scheduled to host Frankfort and Clifton-Clyde was to travel to Doniphan West for district games, but both of those teams cancelled because of COVID-19 issues at their schools), the schools scrambled to coordinate a game that would bring the two undefeated programs together. With Clifton-Clyde playing in 8-man Division 1 and Hanover in Division 2, the game wouldn’t count toward anything but their overall record, and of course, team pride for two of the strongest programs in the state. They hadn’t played each other in five years. The game, which drew a large crowd, was a display of methodical drives with the occasional quick strike touchdown that ended in a 40-20 victory for Hanover. FIRST QUARTER Clifton-Clyde struck first, with a drive and 30-yard touchdown run by Eagle quarterback Edmund Rudolph. Hanover responded immediately, however, with

a 40-yard touchdown run by quarterback Jacob Jueneman on their first play from scrimmage. They were able to convert their point-after attempt to take an 8-6 lead. Hanover scored again on a Keagan Dimler touchdown run to go up 16-6, which was the score at the end of the first quarter.

SECOND QUARTER Hanover was driving in the second quarter and converted a big fourth down conversion with a pass from Jacob Jueneman to Emmitt Jueneman, who scrambled after catching the ball for the first down. But on the next play, Clifton-Clyde defensive back Jett Skocny intercepted Jueneman’s pass and ran it back 40 yards for a touchdown to pull within four. Hanover struck quickly, 10 seconds later, with another Dimler touchdown run, this time of 44 yards. Hanover threatened to score at the end of the half, with Jacob Jueneman having a 50 yard touchdown run and 40 yard touchdown run both brought back on penalties with under a minute left. A third flag in a row for a false start on the next play got the Hanover side agitated, receiving an unsportsmanlike penalty after calling a time out. Hanover was not able to get the ball in, leaving the score Hanover 22, Clifton-Clyde 12 at halftime.

THIRD QUARTER Clifton-Clyde kicked off to start the second half, but used an onside kick, bouncing the ball off a Hanover player and the Eagles recovered the ball to claim the first possession at the Hanover 39 yard line. They weren’t able to convert, however, after getting down to the nine yard line and allowing penalties to push them back. The only score in the quarter was after a Hanover drive, which allowed Jacob Jueneman to score with a one-yard touchdown run. Hanover went up 28-12. FOURTH QUARTER Hanover struck twice in the fourth quarter, with a Dimler touchdown run up the middle at the 6:08 mark, and a Jacob Jueneman run for 55 yards. Clifton-Clyde drove to score with under a minute left to make the score 40-20 in favor of Hanover, but Hanover was able to kneel the rest of the game out for the win. • • • The teams’ offensive stats were very similar, with just 22 yards difference in total offense. Clifton-Clyde had 265 yards rushing and 18 yards passing. Hanover had 243 yards rushing and 18 yards passing. Clifton-Clyde’s Aiden Rudolph had a big game on the ground, rushing for 200 yards on 40 carries, with two touchdowns.

Hanover second in district, has open date on Friday

Hanover has an open date on Friday (this was the spot on the schedule for a game against Linn if they had a team) before hosting Wetmore on Oct. 23. That will be their final district game before the playoffs begin. Wetmore is 1-1 in the district and 1-2 overall. Their win came over Blue Valley last week. With their 2-0 district record, Hanover is in second place behind Frankfort who has a 4-0 district record. Hanover was not able to play their game against Blue Valley earlier this season and Frankfort on Friday, both because of COVID precautions, while Frankfort was able to get four district games in before their shutdown. Frankfort has no more games to play in the regular season, so will likely go into the post-season as the #1 seed in the district, despite not playing Hanover, who is favored to beat Wetmore, giving them a potential 3-0 record. Hanover is the likely #2 seed and Axtell (having lost to both Frankfort and Hanover)

Washington County and Clifton-Clyde to face off on Friday

Clifton-Clyde and Washington County are set for a district game on Friday at Clyde. Clifton-Clyde is 2-0 in the district and 5-1 overall, while Washington County is 2-1 in the district and 4-2 overall. Clifton-Clyde is the #1 seed in the district, while Washington County is #2 and Burlingame is #3. The only mutual matchup on the Eagles’ and Tigers’ schedules so far this season is Burlingame. Clifton-Clyde beat Burlingame 62-12, while Washington County lost to Burlingame 28-48. Clifton-Clyde 6 6 0 8 20 Hanover 16 6 6 12 40 Passing – (H) J. Jueneman 1/6 for 18 yds, 1 int. Recent history of in-county matchups With the Clifton-Clyde vs. Hanover game complete, the Clifton-Clyde vs. Washington County football game on Friday is just the second matchup of in-county teams this season. Washington County only recently switched to 8-man football, so the last time Washington and Hanover played each other in football was in 1982, which was Hanover’s final year in 11-man football. The Tigers won 20-0. The last time Washington and Linn played was in 1993, which was Linn’s final year in 11-man football. Washington won 21-6. Linn and Hanover have played each other regularly in the past five years, but until Friday, Hanover and Clifton-Clyde have not met up since 2015.

Frankfort Regional CLASS 1A GIRLS

Hanover headed to substate after close regional tourney win BY DAN THALMANN Publisher

The Hanover girls held a lead for the entire second half of their Class 1A regional championship game on Saturday at Frankfort, but Frankfort would not go away. There were lead changes throughout the first half, with Hanover taking a twopoint advantage after the first quarter and then ending the half with a 30-23 lead. In the third quarter, Frankfort got to within a point, with Hanover holding a 30-29 lead. But Hanover then went on a run to close out the quarter, up 36-29 at one time before Frankfort finally scored again at the end of the quarter. Hanover was up 36-31 going into the final quarter. Frankfort started the fourth quarter with a 3-pointer and Hanover had seven team fouls at the 4:24 mark, but Hanover still had a five-point lead at 41-36. Frankfort went on a run, taking a charge to claim possession, and then getting fouled on a layup that was good, followed by making the free throw to get within one, 41-40, at the 4:05 mark. Hanover called a time out. Allison Jueneman made a 3-pointer on the first possession out of time out, but

Frankfort brought it to a one-point game again with under two minutes left. MaKenna Jueneman grabbed a steal as the clock ticked down and Hanover was able to increase the lead to four points for a 4743 win. Cadlee Stallbaumer had 15 points to lead the Wildcats. “We had to play Frankfort on their home floor, and since Frankfort is the only team to beat us this year, the girls had a little more focus going into the game,” said Hanover Head Coach Chris Beikmann. “It was a tough, but wellplayed game by both teams. I believe the biggest difference between the two teams was the foul trouble we got them in. Our girls never gave up on the game plan, even when Frankfort made their late push. To win regionals, we had to have two team wins and we did! Really happy for the girls on meeting one of our many goals this year.” Frankfort 10 13 8 12 43 Hanover 12 18 6 11 47 Points – Stallbaumer 15, Lohse 12, Behrends 6, Atkins 6, A. Jueneman 3, Hendrickson 3, E. Bruna 2.

Hanover ends Lady Tiger season, 58-44 Hanover was the #1 seed and had a first-round bye.

They got to the championship game with a win over Washington County on Friday at Frankfort by a score of 58-44. Washington County came out with strong outside shooting, grabbing an early lead and maintaining it to a 30-25 halftime advantage. But Hanover came back and tied up the game after the third quarter, 43-43, before dominating the final quarter against the Tigers. Hanover scored 15 and held Washington County to just one point to give the Wildcats a 58-44 win. “The girls really gave good effort throughout the game,” said WCHS Head Coach Scott Romeiser. “The shots we were hitting in the first three quarters didn’t fall in the fourth quarter.” “We just played [Washington County] 10 days before,” said Hanover Head Coach Chris Beikmann. “Washington County executed their game plan and started off hitting five 3’s in the first half. But we used a late run in the third and a great fourth quarter to put them away.” Wash. Co. 16 14 13 1 44 Hanover 13 12 18 15 58 Points – (H) Stallbaumer 22, E. Frankfort Regional CLASS 1A BOYS

WaCo falls in close title game to Frankfort BY DAN THALMANN Publisher

There were lead changes throughout the first half of the Class 1A regional basketball game on Saturday at Frankfort. Frankfort was up by three on the Washington County Tigers at the end of the first and second quarters. The Tigers had taken the lead back halfway through the second quarter, but Frankfort worked their way back for a 17-16 lead at the 1:31 mark, and then scored with under 10 seconds to go to claim the halftime lead of 19-16. Frankfort went on an 8-2 run to start the second half, going up by nine points at the midway point of the third and then extending it to a 10 point lead at the 1:38 mark. But then Kobe Hoover sank and 3-pointer and Garret Otott was fouled on a shot and made a free throw to make the score 2329 with a minute to go in the third quarter. Washington County’s defense also stepped up, getting much needed stops. In the fourth quarter, Frankfort scored, but a Tyler Simmons 3-pointer and another make made the score 28-31. But that would be the closest Washington County would get for the rest of the game. Frankfort went on an 8-0 run and at the 1:36 mark, Frankfort

was up 42-30. The Tigers didn’t give up, but lost 3946. Frankfort 10 9 10 17 46 Wash. Co. 7 9 7 16 39 Points – Hoover 18, Simmons 8, Buhrman 4, Nelson 4, Otott 3, Gilliam 2.

Tigers oust Hanover with close semi-final win Washington County was the #1 seed in the tournament, so they had a firstround bye before facing the Hanover boys in the semi-final round on Thursday. Washington County built a commanding lead in the first half. They were up 2912 by halftime, with Kobe Hoover draining three 3-pointers and Drew Buhrman putting in two 3-pointers and Tyler Nelson adding eight points. But the Tigers cooled off in the second half and Hanover got hot scoring in the fourth quarter to make a comeback. Hanover severely restricted Washington County’s shooting. The Tigers made no field goals in the fourth quarter, but went to the line 26 times, making 15 free throws. Hanover’s Blake Hynek scored 12 points in the fourth, and five other players scored to give Hanover

a 26-point quarter, but it wasn’t enough and Washington County won 50-45, advancing to the finals and ending Hanover’s season. Hanover 4 8 7 26 45 Wash. Co. 12 17 6 15 39 Points – (WC) Buhrman 18, Hoover 16, Nelson 8, Otott 5, Grace 3. (H) Hynek 24, J. Juene-

Tyler Nelson powers up to put up an inside shot. He had four points in the championship and controlled space in the middle for the Tigers.

Kobe Hoover looks for an opening and drives down low. The Frankfort defender was unable to stop him. He led the Tigers with 18 points in the game.

Clifton-Clyde’s regional championship game against St. John’s-Tipton on Saturday in Lincoln was a backand-forth affair, but unfortunately for the Eagles, they were on the wrong side of the scoreboard when the buzzer sounded. Clifton-Clyde had a twopoint lead after the first quarter, but St. John’s-Tipton, the #1 seed in the tournament, used balanced scoring to claim a 23-22 lead going into halftime. The Eagles took the lead back after outscoring the BluJays 9-6 in the third quarter, but a battle of mostly free throws in the fourth quarter gave St. John’s-Tipton the edge, even though Clifton-Clyde’s Aiden Rudolph went 11 for 16 from the line for the Eagles. St. John’s-Tipton was able to pull ahead for a 4543 win. “It was a close ballgame with the lead changing several times,” said CCHS Head Coach Jim Blackwell. “Aiden lead the team with 23 points. The guys played hard, but in the end, we just couldn’t come up with the

Eagles protect big lead at half for second round win Clifton-Clyde got to the championship game with a win over Pike Valley on Thursday in Lincoln, that looked big because of a dominating second quarter. The Eagles were only up by two points against the Panthers after the first quarter, but then put up 17 points and held Pike Valley to five in the second quarter to grab a 32-18 lead at half. Clifton-Clyde needed that quarter, because Pike Valley stayed within that margin for most of the rest of

the game, especially with Pike Valley’s Reeves sinking seven 3-pointers in the game (including five in the fourth quarter) for a gamehigh 33 points. Clifton-Clyde won 74-58. “We played solid defense, which allowed us to have a comfortable lead by half,” said Blackwell. “Ten guys scored, three of which were in double digits. Aiden had a double-double on the night. We hit free throws in the fourth quarter to secure the win.”
