JUN K IM Artistic Director
On behalf of the outstanding musicians of the Washington Chamber Orchestra, I would like to extend a warm welcome to you as we usher in the 2018-2019 season! It has been already five years since a small group of enthusiastic musicians, active in their careers as soloists, chamber musicians, orchestral players, and music professors, gathered in a room to share a vision to make high-quality classical concerts more accessible to everyone: young and old, rich and poor, and from diverse cultural backgrounds. We were all very excited about this common goal of forming a unique chamber orchestra that would reach out to our communities. We wanted to reach out to more people with music, because we all believe in the value of classical music, which can influence people’s lives in so many positive ways. The WCO has been performing in many communities in the MD, VA, and DC areas with a variety of classical music repertoires, from chamber music pieces to chamber orchestra pieces; from Bach to Barber, Beethoven to Prokofiev. I am very grateful to present to you our new 2018-2019 season, with unique and exciting concert cycles featuring internationally acclaimed virtuoso flutist Marina Piccinini, also a faculty member at the Peabody Institute, who will perform the beautiful Mozart Flute Concerto, and the return of an audience favorite, violinist Irina Muresanu who debuted with us two seasons ago, performing impeccable Beethoven Violin Concerto, will be taking us this time to South America with the Four Seasons of Buenos Aires by popular Tango composer A. Piazzolla. For the highlight of this season, after our first successful benefit concert last year with Chopin Competition winner Seong-Jin Cho, WCO is announcing its second special benefit concert to support the WCO Endowment. For this year’s special Benefit concert, Yeol Eum Son, a double silver medalist at the 2011 Tchaikovsky Competition and the 2009 Van Cliburn Competition will join us to perform Chopin’s Concerto No. 2. Besides our regular concert cycles and our benefit concert, the WCO will be featured at Bonita Lestina Performance series by the city of Fairfax and educational concerts, as always to fulfill our mission. I guarantee that this will be another thrilling season. We look forward to sharing the season with you !
