1 - UNIVERSITY LETTER

Greetings from Washburn University! This past fiscal year has been remarkable. We celebrated Washburn’s 150th anniversary. We launched new programs like the Entrepreneurship & Innovation track in the School of Business. We welcomed more than 300 international students to our campus. The Mulvane Art Museum turned 90.

• Provided much-needed health care services to 1,882 people in underserved communities through the mobile health clinic and our nursing program

So much of what makes Washburn great, so much of our continued success is because of you. Donors, alumni, friends, parents and faculty like you continue to provide generous financial support to the University.

Thank you for helping make this possible. Your ongoing commitment to Washburn means more students can find their path to success. Classes can remain small and provide that close facultystudent interaction that has been a hallmark of our teaching environment. We can offer new programs, more international exposure, more internships and opportunities for our students and faculty.

This past year, Washburn received $12.4 million from Washburn University Foundation from our alumni and friends. Your generosity has a tremendous impact on Washburn students and faculty. With your help, we: • Provided support to more than 200 students to study abroad in more than 20 countries • Funded the Ruth Garvey Cochener Fink Professors of Leadership, bringing alumni like Broadway stars Jeff Kready, ba ’04, and his wife, Nikki Renee Daniels, to campus to teach our students and perform an amazing Broadway in the Heartland concert to a sell-out crowd

• Partnered with BNSF Railway to provide a state- of-the-art diesel technology training lab and industry-guided curriculum at Washburn Tech • Renovated Morgan Hall and added a modern, inviting Welcome Center that showcases our Ichabod pride to every person who comes to our campus.

We are very fortunate to have such loyal friends like you. Thank you again for all you do for Washburn University.

FOUNDATION LETTER - 2

Dear Alumni and Friends, Each year at this time, I reflect on the amazing commitment to Washburn University of alumni and friends like you, and how very fortunate we are to have such strong support. This past fiscal year is no exception. During the course of the year, we raised $12.2 million through gifts – both large and small – from our alumni and friends. This past fiscal year, 1,110 new donors stepped forward to support Washburn University, a 61 percent increase in new donors over the previous fiscal year. That is phenomenal! Your generosity means that 1,746 students received privately funded scholarships totaling $3.6 million. With your support our faculty and academic programs received $3.9 million to enhance curriculum, support research and further professional development that in turn strengthens teaching expertise and benefits our students. Nearly 2,000 alumni and friends bought personalized pavers for the Ichabod Plaza that leads into Morgan Hall and the new Welcome Center, the proceeds of which support the renovation. Many of you made other very generous gifts to this project, allowing us to give our students, families and visitors an amazing Washburn experience from the time they step foot on campus. We want each of you to know we are truly grateful for your commitment to Washburn, our students, faculty and campus environment. It is an honor to work with you as we conclude our sesquicentennial celebration and look to the future – a future that holds such promise for generations of students yet to come to

Washburn. Please know that through your generosity, you have helped shape our future. Thank you for your support and belief in all that Washburn offers – a life-changing education, dedicated faculty, lifelong friendships and a campus environment that fosters learning. Thank you for sharing our vision and helping make our students’ dreams a reality.

JuliAnn Mazachek President Washburn University Foundation

5 - FACULTY & PROGRAMS

Private support helps grow new programs, attract top faculty Jim Martin scanned the room at Meet the Firms, an annual event introducing Washburn accounting and finance students to more than 25 companies from Topeka and surrounding cities. One thing stood out to Martin and made him proud. “You looked around,” said Martin, bba ’79. “Who was working the booths? It was our alumni. Half the people giving interviews were Washburn business alumni talking to the next generation of workers.” Martin, the Snyder Distinguished Lecturer in the School of Business, aligns students with internships in more than 30 companies each year.

“We ask them what needs aren’t being met and make the changes.” Martin mentioned the addition of a master of accountancy, a bachelor’s degree in entrepreneurship and innovation and a bachelor’s degree in international business.

“I’m paying it back. I’m blessed to have this opportunity to be a teacher and shape people.”

He helped recent graduate Alexandria Fisher, bba ’14, get an internship in the property accounting department at Westar Energy her final semester. That paid off with a full-time job with the company offer after graduation. “I was working in a great environment and learning professional expectations,” Fisher said. “Westar really cared about helping me grow and succeed. It was nice to know I didn’t have to go somewhere like Kansas City to get experience with a major corporation.” The relationships between Washburn and companies like Westar Energy help fill the local workforce with talented graduates who already have real-world experience. They also help Washburn shape the programs it offers. “We work with the business community,” Martin said.

“People don’t realize the global nature in which we deal. Global needs require a global solution, and that’s what we’re doing with the international program,” he said. Martin started his career as a high-ranking executive at Westar Energy and had a firm grasp on the business community when he came to Washburn in 2003.

“I spent many years in the corporate world before coming here. I tell everybody this is the greatest job you could ever have,” he said. Private donations fund Martin’s professorship, make new programs possible and give the University the ability to hire the best faculty. “We’ve done a lot of growing and hiring in recent years. Professorships and other funds give us more options,” Martin said. “If we see a person we think is a perfect fit, we can afford to get them.” Martin is one of many Washburn employees who believe so much in what they’re doing that they give back to the University. “I’m an alumnus who came here on scholarships,” he said. “I’m paying it back. I’m blessed to have this opportunity to be a teacher and shape people.”

7 - SPACES

A grand front door, a welcoming space Warm. Inviting. Spacious. The new Welcome Center at Morgan Hall is all of this and more. Unveiled at Grand Homecoming, the Welcome Center is unmistakably the grand front entrance to Washburn University, the place where students, families, alumni and visitors make their way on campus. And, as was the vision for this new space, it is fast becoming a hub for students –

Ashlee Harris, senior, Concordia, Kansas health administration “I love the open space. There are so many places to do homework and study for tests. I really like the booths. They’re comfortable with plenty of room to work. This space is so much better than what we had before.” Adam Harris, freshman, Lexington, South Carolina pre-engineering “I come here to study every day after my pre-calc class. I spend a lot of time here. It’s great.”

Angela Kiamco, freshman, Cebu City, Philippines computer science “This is an awesome place. I love to study here. It’s comfortable, and there are plenty of outlets for my electronics. It’s perfect.”

a place where they can gather to study between classes and meet their fellow Ichabods. Thank you for making this dream a reality. This is a space we can all be proud of – students, families, faculty and staff, alumni and friends alike. A space that truly reflects our Ichabod pride, a place we can call home.

Lorraine Teater, senior, Topeka, Kansas elementary education/middle school math “This is such a wonderful environment to study in. Before, I had to go across campus to study between classes. I love the homelike atmosphere. I really appreciate the fact that alumni helped make this possible.”

Ryan McIntosh, freshman, Topeka, Kansas computer information sciences/entrepreneurship & innovation “I love to study here. It is quiet and comfortable and really convenient. It’s an awesome place, and it makes me proud to be an Ichabod.”

Ideal Place

The Building Campaign for Washburn University School of Law Our history has earned it. Our future is calling for it. We are determined to create a powerful new space for Washburn University School of Law. A prominent, prestigious home that defines campus. The ideal place, here in the capital city. This project reaches far beyond the building itself. It’s about the people who go into it, and the accomplishments that will come out of it. Building on our storied past, this facility will fortify our teaching, stimulate our students, energize recruiting and engage alumni. It will optimize everything we do. These are the goals we’ve been doggedly pursuing since 1903: Practical Skills, Recruitment, Community, Innovation,

Reputation. If we want to keep raising the bar, a new space is absolutely essential. Our total fundraising goal is $20 million. The University will match this with an additional $20 million. Together, our gifts will build a new home for all of us. A place worthy of the Washburn Law name. To date, we have surpassed the $5 million mark in the campaign through the generosity of our alumni, friends, faculty and staff. It is truly an exciting time to be a part of Washburn Law, and 2016 promises to be even better as we prepare our next generation of Washburn lawyers.

“When I started on the faculty full time in 1973, we had a 40:1 studentto-faculty ratio. We’ve been able to change that ratio so that it is 9.6:1, which means we have the opportunity to offer many more specialty courses. We need small teaching areas in which students can do direct and cross-examinations of witnesses and take depositions. And that’s something the new building will have.”

“Millennials are looking for so many more technological advances in a school setting, and investing in a new building that will fulfill capacity needs for the next 50 years is more cost-effective than renovating the current structure. The tools need to be integrated into the building itself. Video conferencing, webinars, whiteboards – these technologies make for a richer, more inspiring student experience.” Sunee Mickle, ’06, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas

9 - ANNUAL GIVING

Shermoens rooted in Topeka, multiplied into family of Washburn supporters Washburn needed someone to chair the mathematics, statistics and computer information sciences department in 1967. The person hired settled into Washburn and now has a family of Ichabods three generations strong.

Rich met his wife, Lori Shermoen, bba ’83, in a Washburn production of South Pacific in 1980.

Richard Shermoen was teaching mathematics at North Dakota State University when Washburn contacted him. He was interested so he took a train to meet Dean Authur Engelbert, who was traveling to Chicago.

Their time at Washburn fostered a love for music and strong relationships with professors who still bring back great memories when they meet.

After an intriguing visit, Richard took another train to Topeka where he saw the new wing of Morgan Hall that would soon be his home on campus. “I was very impressed. Math departments are typically in the oldest building on campus,” he joked. Richard, along with his wife Nancy and their three children, moved to Topeka after years of teaching and studying at universities all over the country. He served in the position until he retired in 1993, and Nancy worked as an administrative assistant in the psychology department from 1973-92.

“I was a dancer, and he played Billis and wore coconuts and a grass skirt,” Lori said.

“We’re so excited about supporting Washburn during this transformational time,” Rich said. “Washburn continues to enrich the Topeka community while growing into a university that attracts students from all over. And it’s not just the buildings that are changing. It’s the programs offered.” Rich and Lori contribute to Washburn every year with gifts to his parents’ scholarship fund, music and the School of Business. Their son, Andrew, is studying education and performs in the Washburn Choir and jazz ensemble. Their niece, Mandi Walter, bba ’09, is on the Washburn University Alumni Association Board of Directors.

Since retiring, they created the Richard E. Shermoen Mathematics Scholarship. They also support other areas like music and KTWU through annual gifts. They are proud of their university and the family legacy they are building.

“I have so many opportunities to be involved and give,” she said. “I really enjoy providing input as a younger member of the board.”

“We love Washburn and enjoy supporting it,” Richard said.

Her sister, Bridget Walter, ba ’12, said it wasn’t uncommon for her family to see each other on campus or even take a class together. She’s now seeking a master of business administration.

Their son, Rich, bba ’81, and daughter, Margaret Walter, bba ’11, both have children who have attended or are attending Washburn.

“It’s great to carry on the tradition,” she said. “It made the choice to come here easy.”

11 - PLANNED GIVING

Retirement keeping Linda Tuller busy Linda Tuller believes education and giving make an individual a whole person. The 69-year-old recent retiree now focuses her attention full time on those two things.

Seeing children eager to learn in that environment gave her a new perspective.

She volunteers throughout Topeka and spends time at Washburn activities like After Hours, plays and tailgates.

Tuller’s estate gift will benefit the Donald C. Wright Business Scholarship. She hopes recipients can focus more on growing as a whole person and less on where their money will come from.

“I’ve made it a point to stay involved with the University and I feel very strongly about giving back,” she said. Tuller, ba ’90, set up a planned gift through the Washburn University Foundation and Stewardship Counseling, LLC. “I’ve had that box checked in my will for years,” she said of her gift to Washburn. “Now I have the parameters set up that I’m very comfortable with. I can give every year to things I support and Washburn will benefit forever with a portion of what’s left.” Tuller credits the many challenges and opportunities she faced as an adult with shaping her into a whole person. She married and had two daughters before age 20. Scholarships later helped her get a public administration degree from Washburn at age 43. She married off her daughters and made the honor roll in the process. “I felt if I can do that, I can do anything,” Tuller said. She later worked as a bank vice president before divorce and job loss within weeks of each other nearly took it all away. She temporarily left her family, which included two grandchildren, and joined the Peace Corps. She spent two years in post-communist Romania teaching in a room where lights were not used and a different child brought her chalk each week for the slate board she said had “ridges like a rutted country road.”

“I’ve tried to live a very simple life since then,” she said.

“I see the value of an education that is wide in its spectrum and helps us know ourselves better,” she said. She tries to connect with students in the classes she audits and recent graduates at Washburn Alumni Association events. She also tutors international students learning English. “I think those relationships, showing interest in people and looking them in the eye are just as valuable as any gift,” she said. Tuller worked 12 years for Hills Pet Nutrition and then three years for BOK Financial, formerly GTrust Financial Partners, before retiring. She now volunteers as treasurer for two churches, teaches Junior Achievement and crochets hats and scarves for children in need. Her work with the churches has taught her that every gift makes a difference. She notices when parishioners who regularly give pass away without leaving an estate gift. Having a plan in place means her legacy will live forever. “I would hope that people see the need to share their bounty,” Tuller said. “I give to open doors to education. I graduated from this University and I’ve put a lot of my heart and soul into supporting it. I trust the students who benefit will grow the same way I did.” Contact Jeannie Shy at 785.670.2734 or jshy@wufoundation.org to explore how you can help students or to set up an appointment with Stewardship Counseling, LLC.
