WALTER SCOTT ASKS...

KELLY ROWLAND

The former X Factor judge and original member of the R&B group Destiny’s Child, 35, calls on both of those roles to put together the next superstar female singing act in the BET reality series Chasing Destiny, airing Tuesday nights. How will Chasing Destiny work? I wanted this show to be organic—not a cattle call. I wanted to find the girls. That’s the way it used to be with A&R [artists and repertoire departments], and that’s what [creative director/ choreographer] Frank Gatson and I have done. Explain the “Destiny” in the title. Destiny is a very big thing for me. When you think about your dreams, you have to chase them. You have to know that they’re there; you have to know that it’s possible, and that’s what destiny is. You constantly want that goal to come true, so you’re chasing after it. You play the mom of Lucious Lyon (Terrence Howard) on Empire in flashback scenes. How has that been? Of course the flashbacks are with a younger Lucious [played by Shannon Brown], but I see everybody on set and we’ve gotten a chance to laugh it up. It’s been awesome. You do a lot of charitable work. What’s closest to your heart? Even before I was a mom, anything that related to children. I do a lot with Boys & Girls Clubs of America. To hear all these kids’ stories about how they got there, their journey with education, how much it means to them and how it changed their future is pretty amazing.

I see that Andrew Dice Clay is coming back to TV. Which comedians make him laugh? —Jeff W., Brooklyn, N.Y. A: The Brooklyn native, 58, says he thinks Rodney Dangerfield was hilarious, plus Dangerfield gave Clay his big break. He adds, “Joan Rivers was another one whose stand-up and career I admired. And Don Rickles is simply the best.” Clay’s new Showtime series, Dice, premiering tonight, is scripted but will tell “semi-true” stories of who he is onstage and off. What surprising song is at the top of the most-played list on Rowland’s iPod? Go to Parade.com/kelly to find out.

Does Emily Deschanel have a favorite episode of her series Bones? —Annette L., Cleveland, Ohio A: Deschanel, 39, says her favorite episodes of Bones (returning to Fox to begin its spring season Thursday night, April 14) are the ones where she and co-star David Boreanaz go undercover. Of those, she singles out the circus episode from season four, “Double Trouble in the Panhandle.” “I had to learn how to fake walk on wire, so it wasn’t me actually tightrope walking very high,” she says. “But I got to do it on a much lower wire, which was a lot of fun filming the close-ups.”

Ride ’Em,

Kevin

Kevin Costner, 61, steps away from the all-American image he crafted in Dances With Wolves, Field of Dreams and McFarland, USA to play the title role in the action thriller Criminal (in theaters April 15). Here are five facts about the native Californian. 1. Costner was 5 feet 2 inches when he graduated high school—nearly a foot shy of his eventual height. 2. He’s the lead singer of the country/rock band Kevin Costner & Modern West.

3. His two Oscars are offset by three Razzies (given for worst films and bad performances). 4. He does his own horseback riding in his Westerns. 5. One of his jobs while trying to make it as an actor was giving tours of stars’ homes.

THE FASTEST-GROWING CAREERS IN 2016

I

t’s a great time to get a job. The national unemployment rate is 5 percent (the lowest since 2008). Some jobs are opening up twice as fast as they can be filled. Health care, for example, is booming. Thanks to aging baby boomers, more Americans grapple with chronic health problems (diabetes, obesity), and as more people get health insurance, they seek more medical care. Add it all up and 19 of the top 30 fastest-growing occupations are in health care or personal care. Of course it’s not rosy everywhere— it’s not a good time to be a farmer, in manufacturing or working for the U.S. Postal Service, for example. —Kathleen McCleary

Ask Marilyn By Marilyn vos Savant

Say I look at a mirror two feet away. Do I see myself as someone sees me at two feet? Or four feet? —K.A., Foster City, Calif.

You see yourself from four feet away. Why? Your image doesn't originate at the mirror. Instead, light travels from your face two feet to the mirror, where it's reflected another two feet back to your eyes. But if you look at a speck of dust on the mirror's surface, you see it from only two feet away. This phenomenon is why a mirror facing a window makes a room seem larger, but a photo of the same scene does not. When you look at that mirror, you actually look outdoors, even when you're facing the opposite direction! Send questions to marilyn @ parade.com
