About Us Janesville is a growing community nestled in the heart of south central Minnesota. Its location along Old. Hwy. 14 is just minutes away from neighboring communities and Lake Elysian. The city of Waseca is just a 10-minute drive east along Old Hwy. 14, while Mankato is only 15 minutes to the west. It takes about 30 minutes to get to Faribault and Owatonna, while a trip to Rochester or the Twin Cities is a little more than an hour. Janesville, or East Janesville, was platted in 1869 for the general manager of the Winona and St. Peter railroad. In the winter of 1869-70, buildings were moved and in the spring of 1870, the new town was established. According to 2010 U.S. Census figures, Janesville has experienced a stro ng period of growth since the turn of the century. The 2010 census shows Janesville as having a population of 2,256 residents, but 2013 estimates from the state demographer show the city’s population as 2,269. That’s up from the 2000 census, which listed Janesville with 2,109 residents. The growth is expected to continue following the August 2012 opening of a new four-lane Hwy. 14. The roadway, which runs from Owatonna in Steele County to New Ulm in Brown County, is expected to bring potential bypass development. Guardian Energy’s ethanol plant is just a mile east of town. The Janesville Carnegie Library made some necessary repairs in recent years. The 1912 building, constructed with funds donated by Scottish-American philanthropist Andrew Carnegie and $5,000 raised locally, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The city operates under a council-mayor form of government, and relies on resident volunteers to serve on its many board and commissions. Mayor’s Welcome I would like to personally welcome you to Janesville, Minnesota. My wife, Shannon, and I are Janesville natives dating back several generations. Janesville History The original village of Old Janesville was founded in 1856 when Caesar De Regan of France laid out a town site on the west side of Lake Elysian. The village was originally called St. Caesar and later renamed New Albany. The village received its present name that same year when J.W. Hosmer moved to the foot of Lake Elysian, started a sawmill and bought a half interest in the town site. Hosmer renamed the town Janesville to commemorate the town in Wisconsin where he was from originally. Janesville became a part of Waseca County in February of 1857. On May 17, 1858, Janesville Township was instituted. The first large hotel was built and the post office was established that same year. Hosmer and N.E. Strong built a sawmill during the winter of 1861-62. J.O. Chandler opened a general store in 1866. It became the largest store in town and also housed the post office. During the winter of 1869-70, nearly all the buildings of the previous town site were moved to the new railway village site, called East Janesville, which was platted in August 1869, for the Winona and St. Peter Railroad company. During the spring of 1870, under the guidance of E.H. Gosper, the village of Janesville experienced a construction boom. On May 10, 1870, the new village was incorporated as Janesville. Numerous new businesses arrived in town following the reincorporation. By 1874, Janesville had approximately 500 people and was one of the fastest growing villages in the state of Minnesota. In 1878, the original town hall building was finished for a total cost of $5,000. By 1885, the village had grown to more 1,000, residents, but on April 12, 1887 a fire ravaged the village. 6 | 2016 Janesville Community Guide

According to a story in the April 18 issue of the Janesville Argus: “In the short space of two hours, the homes and property of over 100 people were swept away, leaving a scene of desolation... The fire was located in the loft, which was pretty well filled with hay, and it was only a few moments ‘ere it had spread, with almost lightning rapidity, to adjoining buildings... Efforts to stay the progress of the fire were useless. “Everything on that side of the street was doomed. The flames spread over the block, reaching their fiery tongue in every direction...the flames leaped across the street and were wrapping everything in their deadly embrace...Too much praise can not be accorded the women of the town, for their heroic and energetic efforts in saving goods and material. They were out in force and labored like Trojans. The Waseca Fire Department was notified, but did not arrive until the fire was well underway on both sides of Main Street. They did efficient work when they did come, for which they have the gratitude of our citizens. The origin of the fire is unknown.” The Janesville fire slowed the growth of the village due to the fact that much of Main Street had to be rebuilt. However, many people believe that the fire is responsible for the growth of industry that occurred in the years to come. Many of the buildings were rebuilt using brick that became a pioneer industry in the village. Bricks from Janesville were even shipped to Waseca and used in the construction of the Railroad Round House. The Methodist Church and Town Hall were also constructed using brick from Janesville. Janesville has been home to many different industries over the years. Some of the first to make their mark on the community were the flour mills, grist mill, the grain eleva-
tor, cooper shops, a barrel and tub factory, a cheese factory, a stock farm, an apiary, a children’s underwear manufacturing facility and a saw mill. At one point, the village had a mill that manufactured broom handles, oak staves and clothespins.

Janesville is home to the Janesville-Waldorf-Pemberton School District ISD No. 2835. The school in Janesville houses more than 575 students enrolled in preschool through 12th grade. With a student/ teacher ratio below the state average, the district offers quality academics and instructors along with boundless opportunities in athletics, fine arts and industrial tech programs. Graduating class sizes at JWP have been between 40 to 50 in recent years, giving students the opportunity to build strong personal relationships with their classmates, and with the JWP faculty and staff. In 2015-16 JWP began offering STEM — Science,
Technology, Engineering and Mathematics — for students in kindergarten through sixth grade. It also rolled out an extensive technology program. All fourth- through 12thgraders have Chromebooks assigned to them in a one-toone environment. students are going to be provided with an excellent opportunity to improve their knowledge and skill set in this area.” Aside from the classroom experience, special events make for an exciting school year at JWP. Each fall in late September or early October, students gear up for Homecoming Week. The week kicks off with the crowning of a new Homecoming king and queen at a coronation ceremony Monday night. The week is packed with fun-filled activities and themes for students of all ages. The week is capped off with a home football game for the JWP Bulldogs at which students from past graduating classes return home to cheer on their alma mater. The JWP Bulldogs are the pride of Janesville with junior high through varsity teams in 10 different sports. The Bulldogs are in the Valley Conference in every sport except football. JWP also offers superior education in the arts. Band and choir is offered at both the junior and senior high level, and the students have a chance to show off their talents at concerts throughout the year. The variety of art classes offered at JWP has allowed students to grow in their skills and even compete in juried exhibitions in the area. The students at JWP are committed to their community. Students in grades K-12 participate in different community service projects and fundraisers every year such as Pennies for Patients, which raises money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, and cleaning up the Prairie Ridge Golf Course every spring. Trinity Lutheran School, founded in 1890, is committed to offering a quality education in a Christian environment. This K-8 school gives students the chance to learn in a Christ-centered environment that allows them to grow not only educationally and spiritually. With daily prayer and worship, students at Trinity learn how to be well-rounded individuals in the community and through Christ. Enrollment is around 130 students. Janesville-Waldorf-Pemberton Community Education provides lifelong learning and recreational programs for residents of all ages in the Janesville, Waldorf and Pemberton communities. There’s Behind-the-Wheel training for new drivers, School Age Care, Early Childhood Family Education classes and a preschool program. There are plenty of sports, including trap shooting, the Bulldogs clay target league, as well as classes that get the creative juices flowing. During the summer, Community Education offerings grow exponentially. There are swimming lessons at Reinbold’s Campground swimming pool throughout the summer months. Summer Theater allows participants the opportunity to write, design and perform an original play. Students can also grow their skills as artists by taking different art classes through community education. T-ball and Peanut League baseball are also summer favorites. The games are played at Trinity Lutheran School field and students entering kindergarten through grade three
may participate. Another popular activity is track and field, available for students entering first through sixth grade. The annual Minnesota Twins bus trip is on again in 2016. The walls of the library are filled with art created by area students. A variety of events and programs are offered all year long, and in the summer to help keep kids busy. There are computers, laptops to be used inside the library, and young explorers, which are learning computers for children, for preschool through age 7. The 2016 summer reading program — Ready, Set, Read! — kicks off June 1 and runs through July 31. This year’s theme is centered on games of all kinds, from board games to athletics. The program, for ages 2 to 18, awards prizes based on meeting daily reading goals. To participate, stop by the library any time after June 1 and speak with a staff member. Other family-friendly events this summer include a visit from a magician and a puppet show. The library hosts a book club that meets at 6:30 p.m. the second Thursday of every month at the library. Participants meet to discuss the month’s reading selection. To participate, stop by the library or call Librarian Andrea White. Today, the 104-year-old facility is owned by the city of Janesville, while the Waseca-Le Sueur Library System is responsible for library operations. The system has nine locations throughout the two counties and is part of the ninecounty Traverse des Sioux Library Cooperative, which gives patrons access to its resources, including rich databases of journal and magazines articles. 12 | 2016 Janesville Community Guide
The building The Janesville Public Library, one of 65 Minnesota libraries financed by Andrew Carnegie, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Built in 1912, the facility cost $6,195. Of that, $5,000 was donated by Carnegie. The site was donated by a local landowner. “Architecturally, the building is significant as a prominent, well-preserved and maintained example of public Neoclassical design,” according to National Register records. “Often, the imposing locally distinctive presence of a Carnegie Library survives as a particularly visible example of philanthropic contributions by wealthy turn-of-the-century industrialists.” Welcome to

One of Janesville’s most unique features is Prairie Ridge Golf Club. Opened in 1995, Prairie Ridge is the only nine-hole, par 36, reversible course in southern Minnesota. Golfers of all skill levels can enjoy the south course one day and get an entirely new view on the north course next time out. The course, owned by the city, is open to anyone who just wants to get out and play a round or the more avid golfers wanting to play in a weekly league. Prairie Ridge offers five different leagues, with a Hay Daze Tournament June 19 and a Sunday golfing league for couples. Men’s League is also on Monday and Tuesday nights from April until August and a 6-lady Ladies League on Wednes-
days from May through August. Along with those, there are two-person Match Play leagues available for both men and women and a fall league beginning in August. Along with the leagues, Prairie Ridge hosts nearly 30 tournaments throughout the year including popular events such as the Pink Ribbon Ladies Tournament, the Big Cup Tournament, and Fire Department Tournament. Junior Clinics and lessons are also available for those looking to refine their game with General Manager and PGA professional Scott Allen and Ladies club champion Sharon Keyes. For residents and visitors alike, Reinbold Sportsmen Campground means fun. From summer into autumn, it is the ideal location to make the most of the wonderful southern Minnesota outdoors –glorious sunny days filled with swimming, biking, camping, golfing, and moonlit nights perfect for catching fireflies, sitting by campfires, star-gazing and making memories. The campground is located north of Janesville, on Hwy. 3 just one half mile from Prairie Ridge Golf Course, a cityowned course that’s open from early spring to late fall. Opportunities for fun in the sun begin with a large heated pool where families often spend summer days, kids play and can take swimming lessons. Out of the water, activities at Reinbold include rollerblading, volleyball, basketball, horseshoes and a variety of
fun on the playground. Blacktop trails for walking, rollerblading and biking lead into Janesville or Lake Elysian. The campground is ideal for RVs and tents. Sites have water and electric hookups with 30-amp service. The campground features clean restrooms, hot showers, a carpeted game room with video games and a pool table. There are picnic tables and a fire ring at each site. Wi-Fi is available. The campground even features a convenience store that stocks items campers look for: ice, pop, juice, candy and ice cream. Farmamerica Farmamerica — Minnesota’s Agricultural Interpretive Center — is a great destination for families in the Janesville area and beyond. Farmamerica was commissioned by the Minnesota Legislature in 1978 to promote the state’s strong agricultural heritage. In 2000, a new Visitors Center was dedicated to provide an entrance to the one-mile Time Lane and annual celebrations. It is also the site of offices, conference and reception space, a gift shop and observation tour. Located east of Janesville on 120 acres of farmland off of Hwy. 14 on County Road 2, Farmamerica includes a restored prairie/wetlands complex, a 1850s homestead, a one-room schoolhouse, a country church, a blacksmith shop, town hall and antique farm equipment museum. The 1930s farm is complete with a barn, farmhouse, outbuildings and garden. The time lane continues past the feed mill and five segments of the Gosen Family Memorial Orchard and a 1960s-era farm site. The center helps visitors learn first-hand how the farmer of Minnesota survived in the 1800s, thrived in 1900s and developed the modern farming techniques of today. It also looks at new technologies and the future of agriculture. Plans are underway to build a wind turbine and solar cells on site to reduce utility costs and to demonstrate how a modern farm works. Recently, Farmamerica expanded by 240 acres, which will allow for more exhibits focusing on present and new farming technology, offering a more well-rounded educational experience for visitors. 14 | 2016 Janesville Community Guide

The best summer party of the year is found at the Waseca County Free Fair in July – that’s when the fairgrounds come alive with music, food, animals, grandstand events, the midway and camaraderie. Each year, the five-day fair begins with a ceremony at the county Veterans Memorial and oftentimes a Wednesday evening pork supper. Kids of all ages flock to the midway for carnival rides, games, prizes and the much-desired fair food. Local 4-H club members bring their livestock, rabbits and dogs; they operate the 4-H food stand; enter their handmade clothing and work in the livestock barns. Residents from across the county continue the tradition of competition by bringing their best flowers and biggest vegetables, works of art and baked goods to compete for fair ribbons in dozens of categories. Parks & Lakes Janesville residents enjoy and take pride in the great outdoors, spending much of their leisure time in or on the water and in the parks throughout the city and Waseca County. Veterans Memorial Park is dedicated to the men and women of Janesville who served in our nation’s military and is the site of community Memorial Day and Veterans Day celebrations. In 2009, members of American Legion Post 281 installed a gazebo honoring all area veterans. Fundraisers included the sale of bricks engraved with the names of veterans, which were placed in the memorial near City Hall. The 2.27-acre park includes a picnic shelter and grill, benches and tables, restrooms, a dedication plaque and bell, one-half basketball court, sand volleyball court, pitch fence and playground equipment. The park shelter is used for family events and the annual Rotary Club picnic. Veterans Memorial Park also holds a 200-year time capsule to be opened in 2176. North Street Neighborhood Park is a 1.26-acre park dedicated in 1938. Amenities include benches and picnic tables, restrooms, horseshoe toss, swings, slides, playground equipment, balance beams, sand pit diggers and a handicap accessible path. A group of horseshoe enthusiasts plays Thursday nights during summer months.

Lakeview Park, first purchased in 1947, includes an additional 20 acres on the south shore of Lake Elysian where residents and visitors can swim, fish, enjoy the playground, picnic lunches and the park’s wildlife. In the late 1950s a deer fence was installed and deer have been a part of Lakeview Park since the 1960s. There have been turkey and emus in the park. Deer are rotated among the pens as they mature. Janesville Public Works staff cares for the animals year-round. Park equipment is found both on the top and bottom of the hill. The park offers picnic shelters, a beach house, a boat landing and parking area. The Janesville Area Jaycees helped install two softball fields and a concession stand that are used for softball tournaments and league play. The softball fields have been used for softball leagues, Little League baseball and an annual Hay Daze softball tournament. Recreation on Lake Elysian includes both summer and winter sports: Fishing for northern pike, walleye, black bullhead, bluegill and yellow perch. The walking path that leads from downtown Janesville all the way to Lake Elysian offers a wonderful view of the community and is a great way to take in some fresh air whether you are jogging, walking or riding a bike. Fishing and boating are favorite pastimes with Lake Elysian boasting 902 acres of recreational enjoyment. The Holy Spirit Retreat Center has made a name for itself by offering hospitality and opportunities for spiritual growth for individuals and groups regardless of religious affiliation or financial status. The center provides an environment of natural beauty and solitude within 30 acres of wooded land on Lake Elysian. Irish-American Club
of Southern Minnesota The highlight of the year for the Irish-American Club of Southern Minnesota is the annual celebration held the Saturday before St. Patrick’s Day when members proudly celebrate their Irish heritage. The club is based in Janesville and Waseca where the Irish take turns hosting the day-long events. They gather in Waseca in the even years and in Janesville in the odd years. The club, founded in 1968, has been taken over by a new generation. The group has developed its own Facebook page full of information about upcoming events including fundraisers and schedules. It is also a great place to view photos from previous celebrations. Once a year, the Irish-American Club of Southern Minnesota publishes its own newspaper called “The Shamrock” filled with news and photos of club births and marriages and articles about the current year’s president and St. Patrick’s Day royalty.
The celebration begins with Mass at either St. Ann Catholic Church in Janesville or Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Waseca. During Mass, the new Mr. and Mrs. Emerald Isle are crowned and the parade grand marshal is introduced. Following Mass, a Mulligan stew brunch is served before the Parade of Clans winds its way through town with family members following and holding signs identifying their clan. Everyone is invited to walk in the parade whether they are full-blooded Irish or simply Irish at heart. The Irish Rally is the place where the Irish queen candidates are introduced and kids, both young and old, share their talents during a talent show. The rally is followed by Irish bingo, the queen talent contest, dancing, crowning of the Irish queens, Miss St. Patrick and Miss Irish Rose, followed by an Irish jig contest open to everyone. In 2016, Maddy Knoll was named Miss St. Patrick. Sydney O’Brien was crowned Miss Irish Rose.
Indian Island Winery Indian Island Winery is located just a few miles southwest of Janesville and approximately 15 miles from Waseca and Mankato. Indian Island Winery sprang from Winterhaven Vineyard and Nursery, which was established in the spring of 2000. The winery produces wine from grapes grown from its own vineyard and other local growers. Grapes include cold hardy varieties such as Frontenac, LaCrescent, Marquette, St. Croix and Brianna. The vineyard currently covers over 12 acres with over 6000 vines, and is growing. 20 | 2016 Janesville Community Guide
