I love Keri Russell in The Americans, which recently ended its season. While I wait for more episodes, does she have any movies coming out? —Ramon B., Panama City, Fla. A: Russell, 40, stars in Free State of Jones, opening June 24, based on the true story of a farmer (Matthew McConaughey) and his rebellion against the Confederacy during the Civil War. Russell likely won’t be out and about to promote the film, because she will be on maternity leave, spending time with her newborn baby—her first with Americans co-star Matthew Rhys—and with her son and daughter from her first marriage to Shane Deary.

Luke Wilson has never done a lot of TV. Why did he want to be a part of Roadies? —Robert C., Cleveland, Ohio A: The actor, 44, has appeared in more than 50 movies, including The Royal Tenenbaums, Bottle Rocket, Legally Blonde and Concussion. But he’s always enjoyed bands and music, so it was a natural for him to take the role of Bill, the weary, sleep-deprived tour manager in the new Showtime comedy series, premiering June 26. Roadies chronicles the rock world through the eyes of backstage workers who literally put the show on the road. “The [roadies] seemed like these interesting characters that keep things moving,” he says.

Who was your inspiration for Judy? She has the aspect of a more raucous Paula Deen type of person. My mother had a very reﬁned Virginia accent, and I never get to play Southern women, which is funny, because I guess I am one. What’s it like to work with the talented cast? It’s wall-to-wall fascinating, A-type, generous, joyous, mad women. It really is a thrill.

What made The Days and Nights of Molly Dodd such a special show? We wanted to make a character that had no plans with her life, and lived that way. People did that a lot in the ’80s. Some people really loved it and other people really found it infuriating. You have an interesting item on your résumé: You record audio books. My poor son is the child of actors. It’s terrible to have actors as parents, because they love to read to you and act out all the parts. Then at a certain point, you must stop pestering your children. So I found, “Oh, here’s a way: Someone will pay me. I’ll go and tell a story.” You look fabulous. What’s your secret? We have a really busy, interesting life going to see plays, music, art and trying to travel. Life is very quick—just stay interested.

n a gray day in Los Angeles, Jeff Goldblum hikes down from his house in the Hollywood Hills to have drinks in the lounge of the Chateau Marmont Hotel in West Hollywood. He has lived in the same house since the early ’80s, when roles in movies such as The Big Chill and The Right Stuff started to come his way. Goldblum had spent this morning, like most, at home with his wife and baby boy. Goldblum, 63, is 6 feet 4 inches, slender and fit. He became a dad for the first time when his wife of almost two years, former Olympic rhythmic gymnast Emilie Livingston, 33, gave birth to their son, Charlie Ocean, last summer. His next movie, Independence Day: Resurgence, is a $200 million sci-fi space-alien-invasion adventure, and the eagerly awaited sequel to the original 1996 blockbuster that grossed nearly a billion dollars worldwide. four children. When he was 17, he moved to New York City to study acting and two years later made his Broadway debut in the Tonywinning musical Two Gentlemen of Verona. He soon moved to Hollywood and began an astonishingly varied movie career that encompasses more than 60 films, among them The Fly, Jurassic Park and The Grand Budapest Hotel. On TV he is best known for his role as Detective Zach Nichols on Law & Order: Criminal Intent. A pianist, he has long had his own jazz ensemble, the Mildred Snitzer Orchestra, named after a Pittsburgh family friend. The group performs regularly at a club in Los Angeles. This is your third marriage. You’re 63 now. Why did you wait so long to become a father? I never seriously considered it until Emilie. I’m at a different place now. I was enthusiastic to marry her and try to have a baby. The baby was planned? The day before our wedding, Emilie found out she was pregnant and told me. We’d only tried a month before. Charlie was born on Independence Day, July 4, while we were shooting Independence Day: Resurgence in Albuquerque!

Why did you name him Charlie Ocean? We like the ocean. [Also] my dad had a younger brother, my uncle Chuckie, whom he adored. “Charlie” is a form of “Chuckie.” My uncle was my exact height, looked like me. Chuckie died in his 20s as a pilot in World War II.

When did you get serious about acting as a career? Around 10. I went to summer camp. There was a drama program. They gave me the lead in this show called Belle of the Balkans, a Gilbert and Sullivan takeoff. I rehearsed with my mom. It was [in] a beautiful theater. After, I was totally exhilarated and tingly, and I decided that day. I kept it secret for years. By the time I was in high school I was obsessed. Every day I’d write on the steamy shower door, “God, please let me be an actor,” and then I would wipe it off.

Your older brother Rick died young as well. How did that affect you? I looked up to him terrifically. We were close. He was a beautiful, artistic guy. [He was] traveling in North Africa when he got a bug and died quickly, in a day. He was 23. I was in New York in Two Gentlemen of Verona [on Broadway] when I heard he had died. It was a shock. I was 19. It made me serious about life. It was transformational. Why did you become an actor? An overflow of joy. When Mom took me to see children’s theater, I was struck by the joyfulness of it. It turned me on. It was magical.

Did your father approve? My dad said to pick something you love as a vocation. The last couple of years of high school, my love for acting was no longer a secret. I remember my dad being OK with it. He had wanted to be an actor himself. He became a doctor instead. And then he saw me in the lead part in an offBroadway play called City Sugar. He came backstage afterwards, threw his arms around me and burst into tears.

But you’ve said you enjoy fame because strangers know who you are, so the world’s always a friendly place. Well, sometimes they are nice. It’s enjoyable when somebody says, “Oh, nice to see you.” That’s not bad.

Day-jà Vu

You’ve played such a variety of roles in so many films. In the new Independence Day, your character is an action hero who helps save the planet. I’m a humble student of acting and a grateful actor who shows up each time trying not to take it for granted. I like that I get to play a variety of parts, but I’ve liked the few parts where I’m “heroic” and so-called actiony. Can you imagine? The world is potentially going to end, and the human species and the planet are your responsibility—and right in front of your eyes, we lose three billion people. That’s a challenging thing to act, and a nutritious thing—I love that. Tell me about your wife. Emilie’s fantastic! She’s Canadian, her mom is French. She was in the Olympics [in rhythmic gymnastics]. At 2, she followed her sister into ballet classes, and then she started to do gymnastics. Then this Russian coach sussed her out and offered her the chance to spend ages 11 to 16 training in Russia. Emilie was the Pan-American [Games] champion, and then went to the Olympics. She still performs? She’s expanded her technique to aerial things, like Cirque du Soleil. She [performed] on the Oscars this last year, nine months after giving birth to our son! We have a little gym at home and she doesn’t miss a day. She’s a hard worker. She doesn’t have a taste for the flashy life. That’s the first step in [the values] we hope we’ll give Charlie. How did you meet? I met her at the gym. She was working out, just by herself, focused, not showing off. I was immediately thrilled by her and walked over. [Chuckles]

The cast of the new movie is a mix of old and new. The space aliens that brought such worldwide destruction in the original Independence Day in 1996 have come back for more in Independence Day: Resurgence. And several of the original cast members, led by Jeff Goldblum, have returned to meet them. Bill Pullman is back as U.S. President Thomas J. Whitmore, now retired. In between Independence Day films, he also ran the country as President Dale Gilchrist on the TV series 1600 Penn and starred in the movies The Equalizer, Red Sky and HBO’s Too Big to Fail. Vivica A. Fox played an exotic dancer named Jasmine in the first movie. Now, 20 years later, Jasmine is a hospital administrator, raising her son as a single mom following the death of his father, Steven Hiller (Will Smith). In the interim, Fox fought off sharks in Sharknado 2, played Cookie’s sister Candace on TV’s Empire and starred in Kill Bill: Vol. 1 and Vol. 2. Brent Spiner has made a career in sci-fi, first as Data in the TV series Star Trek: The Next Generation and its spinoff movies. He’s back as scientist Dr. Brackish Okun, just as manic and excitable as ever. Judd Hirsch checks back in as Julius Levinson, the father of David (Goldblum). In recent years, Hirsch has worked in several TV series, including Forever, Damages and Numb3rs. Also returning to battle the aliens as a member of the science team is John Storey as Dr. Isaacs. Storey has appeared on several TV shows, including Leverage, Parks and Recreation and Alias. There are several Independence Day newcomers. Liam Hemsworth is Jake Morrison, a fighter pilot serving Earth Space Defense (ESD). Sela Ward plays Elizabeth Lanford, the first female president of the United States. Maika Monroe is former first daughter Patricia Whitmore. William Fichtner portrays ESD Technical Sergeant General Adams, in charge of the fighter pilots. And although Will Smith is not in the new movie, Jessie Usher plays his character’s son, Dylan, now a fighter pilot just like his dad. —Paulette Cohn

DON’T use the “touch test” for doneness. Always use a meat thermometer. DON’T let meat rest before serving. It doesn't make much difference in the juiciness of your steak, and the residual heat will likely overcook it while it sits.

Trim most of external fat from 2 (1½-inch-thick) bone-in rib-eye steaks. Sprinkle with kosher salt and coarsely ground black pepper; refrigerate 1–2 hours. Prepare grill for two-zone cooking with indirect zone at about 225°F. Brush meat with canola oil and place on grill in indirect zone. After 10 minutes, start checking interior temperature with an instant-read thermometer every 5–10 minutes until the deepest part of the meat reaches 110°F. (Flip steaks often to make sure one side doesn’t brown more than the other.) Remove meat from grill; pat dry with a paper towel. Place meat on the hottest part of the grill, as close to the heat source as possible. Grill 3 minutes or until meat reaches 130°F, turning often to brown evenly with no grill marks. Serve immediately. Serves 2–4.
