waseca welcomes you

T

his is Waseca, a community of natural beauty, friendly people, and opportunity.

Located an hour south of the Twin Cities metro between Owatonna and Mankato, Waseca is a southern Minnesota community of just under 10,000 residents where the welcome mat is out to visitors and new residents alike! Waseca is the place to come for fishing, swimming, boating, skiing, ice fishing, skating, sailing and snowmobiling. Enjoy Clear Lake and Loon Lake, the new Waseca Water Park, the bike and walking trail around Clear Lake, the Lakeside Golf and Country Club, restaurants, bed and breakfasts, inns and suites and cabins. It is the home of established and emerging artists whose work may be found at the Waseca Art Center and Passion for Art; it is the home of historic buildings, antique, craft and specialty shops, business and industry.

Waseca has excellent schools, churches of a wide variety of denominations, community education opportunities and a complete summer recreation program. Waseca is the county seat, home of the county court house, county historical museum, the regional library, art center, and Minnesota’s Agricultural Interpretive Center, Farmamerica, with its 1850s homestead, 1930s farm and modern farm. Waseca is the site of Lakefest in Clear Lake Park and the annual Chautauqua Revival in Maplewood Park in summer, the Waseca Marching Classic in the fall, and Sleigh and Cutter in the winter. This is Waseca, where history is preserved, progress is planned and quality of life is valued.

Waseca welcomes you!

day trips

T

here are many reasons, in all four seasons, to make a day trip to Waseca. Whether you come to fish, swim or bike in the warm weather, hike to enjoy the fall foliage, or snowmobile and cross-country ski in the winter, Waseca offers year round day trips for nature lovers. Plan a day around one or more of our festivals, such as the historic Sleigh & Cutter Festival each February, the summer festivals at Clear Lake and Maplewood Park, the annual get-together at the Waseca County Fair, and the Marching Classic in September. Check out the special art classes at Passion for Art; research your genealogy or visit the museum at the Waseca County Historical Society; or bring your group to the Waseca Arts Council’s house walk the first weekend in December. Plan to shop at A Touch of Country Class, a spectacular craft fair held each spring and fall, or spend a day browsing Waseca’s antique and gift shops. Outdoor enthusiasts will enjoy the Waseca Triathlon. The triathlon draws participants and spectators from all over the upper midwest. In 2011 the 8th annual Lakefest Freedom Run on the Fourth of July will draw runners from near and far for the five-mile or one-mile run around Clear Lake. Bring the kids for a day of swimming and sliding at the Waseca Water Park. Picnic in our many parks or visit Farmamerica where history comes alive in the 1850s homestead and 1930s farm house. If camping is your way to relax and get away, Kiesler’s Campgrounds offers an outdoor pool while Waseca County’s Courthouse Park has primitive campsites for those seeking a more rustic adventure. Rent a cabin near the lake, or stay at one of Waseca’s premier motels and enjoy a full array of amenities. Many families come to Waseca for hockey tournaments at the Waseca Community Arena. Plan to make it a family weekend and enjoy the wonderful dining options. DISCOVER

arts & culture

I

n Waseca, arts and culture flourish in many venues throughout the year.

The Waseca Arts Council offers classes, school programs and art shows for children and exhibitions, drawing classes and events for adults. The arts council has its own permanent art collection, a gift shop at the Waseca Art Center, and publishes a monthly newsletter to members. The Waseca Arts Council’s largest event and fundraiser is the Sights & Sounds of Christmas House Walk, held the first weekend of December. Visitors stroll leisurely through homes decorated in the finest of holiday décor. Cozy fires, smells of gingerbread cookies, and twinkling lights are just some of the delights that greet strollers as they take in the sights and sounds of Christmas. Each home displays its own unique holiday theme and style—from small and sweet to large and delightful—decorating fashions and tastes range from Victorian to contemporary. The Waseca Arts Council launched a capital campaign in 2010 with plans to purchase the 11,000-square-foot Waseca Mutual building west of downtown to expand its arts center. Preliminary plans include expansion of gallery space, offices and public gathering space, education space, rental suites and a performance auditorium. Events and news about the art center is available online at wasecaartscouncil.org. Throughout the year there are performances by the Waseca Chorale, the LeRoy Shield Festival in October, classes and exhibitions by area artists at Passion for Art, LLC in downtown Waseca, dancing classes at Sharri’s School of Dance, the Spring Luncheon Series and exhibits at the Waseca County Historical Society Museum, as well as many concerts, speakers, school plays, and events at area churches.

lakes

In the winter, Clear Lake is filled with ice fishing houses and snowmobile activities including the Waseca County Historical Society’s ice harvest and the Kruger Memorial Snowmobile races during the Sleigh & Cutter Festival each February. On the west side of town is Loon Lake, a quiet 80acre lake with its picturesque and historic island in the middle. It is a perfect place to fish, canoe and watch wildlife, or to linger in its peaceful tree-filled park with picnic tables, playground equipment and a 2.2-mile walking path. Fish for bluegills, crappies, bass, northern pike and bullheads at Loon Lake, an “electric boat motors only” lake designated by the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources.

One DNR-assisted boat ramp is located on 10th Street NW, off Highway 14 and a fishing pier is located within walking distance of the parking lot. Local shoreline restoration projects with local environmentalists and the DNR have added native wildflowers, improved water quality and stabilized the shoreline. The Waseca Lakes Association works diligently to improve the quality of Waseca’s lakes. Across Southern Minnesota, lakes provide recreation in all seasons, with bait shops, motels, resorts and campgrounds available for supplies and overnight stays. There are 50 lakes within a half-hour drive from Waseca, including Lake Elysian near Janesville, Reeds Lake west of Waseca, St. Olaf Lake in New Richland, and Tetonka and Sakatah in Waterville.

parks & trails

W

aseca prides itself on its parks throughout the city which provide leisure and recreational activities to all ages.

With 17 parks on more than 500 acres of wooded public land, Waseca County offers a variety of activities, including picnic areas, volleyball, tennis, basketball courts, ball fields, playground equipment and biking and hiking trails. Campers at Kiesler’s Campgrounds across Highway 14 from Clear Lake have easy access to recreation opportunities, including boating and fishing. They might also like to walk up the hill through the nearby gate to Maplewood Park, one of the last remnants of the Big Woods that once covered southern Minnesota. Enjoy the paths that wind through the woods, discover the wildflowers and appreciate the quiet beauty of Maplewood, a true Waseca treasure. Once the home of private cabins and a stately hotel, Maplewood became public land that was used by both Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts and is now the site of nature walks and the annual Chautauqua Revival. The park is noted for bird watching and for the many species of woodland plants and trees. The 24-acre Northeast Park is home to the Waseca Water Park and is equipped with picnic areas, swings and playground equipment for all to enjoy.

chautauqua Chautauqua Revival • Sunday, July 3, 2011 Each July, visitors park their cars at the Maplewood Landing on Clear Lake and ride the trolley to the top of the hill for a day of entertainment and relaxation in the big woods. What awaits them in historic Maplewood Park is the Waseca County Historical Society’s annual Chautauqua where music and magic flow under the big purple and yellow tent from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. And admission is still just 5 cents for adults, with children and servants free, as it was in the late 1800s. Today’s Chautauqua brings local musicians playing their accordions and guitars, mandolins and fiddles. It brings singers and actors in costume, arts and crafts in the children’s tent, walks through the woods and hot dogs, ice cream and popcorn served through the old lodge window.

waseca county fair Waseca County Fair • July 13-17, 2011 Each year, the “Summer’s Best Party” in the county is found for five days in July when the Waseca County Fair hums with activity, music, food, grandstand events, peoplewatching and camaraderie. The fair begins with a ceremony at the Veterans Memorial and a pork supper Wednesday evening and continues with all the traditional fair attractions including the carnival with rides for all ages, games, prizes and midway treats. Local 4-H clubs compete with livestock, operate the 4-H food stand, show off their handmade clothing and work in the livestock barns. County residents bring their best flowers and vegetables, works of art and more to compete for fair ribbons in dozens of categories. The magicians, tractors and Demolition Derby are all still there, along with the Beer Garden and musical entertainment of all kinds. New attractions are added too. The Science Museum of Minnesota programs, the Waseca Donkey Races and the North American Strongman Challenge are just a few.

waseca classic CELEBRATION Waseca Classic Celebration • September 17, 2011 The Waseca Classic Celebration draws thousands each September for a full day of entertainment and festivities. The Waseca Marching Classic is a tradition that has earned its role as a premier marching event. Since its beginning 21 years ago, it has become a real community event that includes a huge parade, classic car show, community dance, skydiving exhibition and ends with fireworks at the conclusion of the day. The Classic event kicks off with a pre-parade classic car cruise followed by a 100-unit parade including marching bands from around the region, performing through the streets of Waseca and competing for prizes for those performances. The parade takes place in downtown historic State Street and features decorated floats, queens, antique tractors and more! After parade awards are presented, band members, students, parents and spectators head to the Waseca High School field for a full afternoon and evening of field show competition. Visitors come for the day to shop, dine and take in the music and historic sites. More information is available at wasecamarchingclassic.com.

sleigh & cutter FEstival Sleigh & Cutter Festival February 4-20, 2011 The historic Waseca Sleigh & Cutter Festival is a great reason to celebrate winter! In 1950, a group of guys in a local barber shop had a vision for a one-of-a-kind parade of horses and sleighs through snow covered streets. It became Waseca’s claim to fame. Today’s festival still includes a unique parade of spectacular horses and sleigh and cutter entries from across the state with added entertainment by the Jesse James Gang and the Cannon Old West Society. Miss Waseca County Sleigh & Cutter reigns over the festivities including a dinner and dance and the unmasking of Frosty the Snowman. Kids play hockey, adults play bridge and Uchre, and all watch an old-fashioned ice harvest on Clear Lake. Enjoy Hobo Chili and other meal options at local restaurants, the Polar Plunge, ice golf, ice curling, youth ice fishing, dodge ball, kickball, skydiving, the Kruger Memorial Snowmobile Races and more! Go to sleighandcutter.org for information.

farmers market

F

armers Markets flourish in Waseca County, giving residents and visitors weekly access to fresh vegetables and other local home grown and homemade products. The markets also become a gathering spot for people who like to talk with people in the community, both vendors and other shoppers.

Children work in their family gardens and make a little spending money by selling their produce while their parents who love to garden, find a way to share the fruit and vegetables of their labors. In Waseca, local farmers set up shop in the Waseca County Court House parking lot Thursdays from 5-6:30 p.m. and again on Saturdays from 8 a.m.-11 a.m. From the back of pickup trucks or vans or from tables and stands, shoppers can find everything from canned tomatoes and fresh tomatoes, cauliflower and kohlrabi and fresh flowers. When the Waseca market is in full swing, the parking lot is filled with about 20 vendors selling their vegetables and flowers along with eggs, handsewn items, crafts, jams, jellies, baked goods and rugs. The Janesville Farmers Market is open from 4:30-6 p.m. along the tracks on West Front Street across from Memorial Park. New vendors are always welcome. Each week, the produce on sale varies according to the weather and time of year. Sweet corn, raspberries and apples are all seasonal crops. The Janesville Farmers Market begins in July and ends when Jack Frost arrives or the crops are done, usually the last week of September or the first week or two of October. New Richland is the site of two farmers markets. The Garden Market is held across from Linda Wagner’s consignment shop on Highway 13 South from 4-6 p.m. each Wednesday. A second market is open in New Richland City Park from 4-6 p.m. each Thursday from June 3 to October 28. 30

ust 13 miles south of Waseca at the crossroads of Highway 13 and Highway 30, the city of New Richland is home to 1,091 residents.

The community’s roots can be found in the Norwegian settlers who began settling the rich farmland around St. Olaf Lake and the LeSueur River and the arrival of the Minneapolis & St. Louis Railroad in 1877. Churches were built, businesses were established and the village, which was formed in 1858, grew.

Today, the New Richland Area Historical Society is preserving the community’s history and working to restore the Independent Order of Oddfellows Hall, a National Register of Historical Buildings. When complete, the city plans to move its branch of the Waseca-LeSueur Regional Library into the downtown building. The community is also proud of its community spirit, the Riverview Golf Course, bike trail from New Richland to St. Olaf Lake and Park, the New Richland Care

en miles west of Waseca on Highway 14 is the neighboring community of Janesville, home to 1,896 residents.

The short commute to Mankato, 15 miles to the west, makes Janesville a growing community. Progress includes a new four-lane Highway 14, potential by-pass development and the opening of Guardian Energy’s ethanol plant.

Janesville, or East Janesville, was platted in 1869 for the general manager of Winona & St. Peter railroad. In the winter of 1869-70 buildings were moved to the new town and in the spring of 1870, the new town was established. Janseville is also the home of the 50-year-old Hay Daze celebration each June when streets are closed and the entire community comes together to celebrate,

BAY WINDOW • Invite the outdoors in. A Bay window can create a window seat or a small retreat. • Traditionally, Bays are made from three windows: a large picture window flanked by smaller windows on the sides that are set at 30º, 45º, 60º or 90º degree angles. • Marvin Bays can be made out of any number of windows, placed at nearly any angle you can imagine. • Bay windows can be constructed from either Ultimate Double Hung or Casemaster windows. • Marvin’s Bay windows can be custom designed and custom sized--so you can choose a Bow window for either new construction or remodeling and replacement.
