Welcome from the Head I am delighted to introduce this term’s edition of Warwick Prep Life. It is but a snapshot of all that goes on in our busy school and I hope you enjoy browsing through the pages that depict another wonderful term at our school. As always, our editors have done a sterling job of recording memorable moments from this term, from the outstanding productions of Annie and Pirates of the Curry Bean, to our Skills for Life ‘Outside the Box’ day, our residential visits to far flung places and the many co-curricular events our children have been involved in.

During this year, we have enjoyed many opportunities to work with our sisters at

King’s High and our brothers at Warwick; as the new buildings really take shape, the exciting reality of us all being on one campus moves closer and closer.You can read about the latest developments at www.projectonecampus.co.uk

As we celebrate the end of another very successful year at Warwick Prep, we wish the very best of luck to our children and staff who are off to pastures new. In particular, I would like to thank Mrs Hill for her enormous contribution to life at Warwick Prep.

She will be missed greatly by us all.

Being an editor was fun because I love writing. I enjoyed the experience of going around school and finding out what the other children thought of events that we took part in.

I have enjoyed being an editor because I have been able tell people all about our school and the people in it. I also enjoyed being able to work with new people.

Rosa I really enjoyed being an editor, as I got to interview people and find out about lots of different things about the school. Being an editor is quite a big responsibility but it is fun as well!

Warwick PrepLife NUTKINS NEWS

Sunny Sports Day! On Thursday 28 June the sun shone on Nutkins’ Sports Day.

The children enjoyed showing off their running skills and were cheered on by all the Nursery children who were spectating from the side lines. A truly celebratory way to end another wonderful year at Nutkins and a fantastic opportunity for the children to get into the sporting spirit. All children were awarded with medals and stickers for taking part.

We will miss you all and wish you the very best of luck when you continue your journey through our school‌ next stop, Nursery!

The Royal Wedding We held a very special assembly on the morning of Friday 18 May in celebration of the Royal Wedding. The children were able to participate in their very own Royal Wedding ceremony.

Many thanks to Reverend Timmis who hosted the service with help from members of the Royal party, including Harry & Meghan themselves!

The children witnessed the nuptials, oversaw the cutting of the cake and sang the National Anthem to celebrate the event. Smiles, confetti and Union Jacks aplenty!

Bee Happy!

This term, some special visitors have been in to Nursery. As part of the ‘Minibeasts’ topic, Alex’s daddy, Mr Bryan, a beekeeper came in to tell the children all about bees. The children discovered lots of interesting facts and were fascinated by the bee honeycomb. They now know how bees make honey and that bees have five eyes!

The children also enjoyed learning to dance around the Maypole.

Izzy, from Fiery Feet, came in to teach them three dances including the very difficult spider dance that spins a web in mid-air!

Come Fly with Me!

Finally the children have been enjoying their topic on holidays in preparation for the summer. They were very excited when Teddy’s daddy, Mr Ball came in to tell them all about his job as a pilot for Virgin Airways. They liked his large model of an Airbus and found out all sorts of interesting facts such as how the plane flies over 35,000 feet or as Finn commented: “over the clouds!”

There were some excellent questions asked by the children, such as: “What is it like flying in the dark?” They looked at a map of the world and Mr Ball showed us some of the places he flies to such as New York. The children were keen to tell him about the countries they have visited, like Australia. Mr Ball has definitely inspired the children’s play in our role play aeroplane complete with its own deck, steering wheel and Captain’s uniform!

Dinosaur Days Earlier this term, Reception welcomed dinosaurs, palaeontologists and explorers to their Paleontology Day. A fun-filled day was had as all four classes made volcano cakes, baked fossils in salt dough, pieced dinosaur skeletons together, dug for fossils, weighed dinosaur eggs, measured the enormous argentinosaurus, designed dinosaur headdresses, stomped around and generally roared a lot like our prehistoric friends!

The children also had a wonderful time learning about the lifecycle of a hen. All ten eggs in the incubator successfully hatched. There were four girls and six boys. It was exciting watching them grow into fluffy chicks. Over the two weeks in school the children wrote diaries, painted and drew pictures and explored how heavy the chicks were. They all thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to handle the chicks and learn about the importance of caring for them.

LOWER ONE NEWS

Exploring Rainforests The children in Lower One have had a busy and exciting term exploring the rainforests and more recently, minibeasts.

The children have loved their rainforest classrooms and have added to the displays with their wonderful work that includes beautiful artwork based on Rousseau, postcards sent from a ‘trip’ to the rainforest, magnet mazes and much more! They have compared life in an Amazonian tribe to their own and learnt all about the different creatures and plants that live in the rainforest and how we may help protect them. Lower One K gave a super ‘Rainforest’ assembly that highlighted all that they had learnt.

The children also loved seeing the creatures brought in by Jungle Jonathan. They met Nacho the snake and stick insects from Borneo. A very exciting day of learning!

Another highlight of the term was a pretend trip to ‘Mars’ to set up a new colony. The children worked imaginatively to create their space helmets and new homes on the red planet!

It has been a really fabulous term!

Poetry and Living Things!

What a busy final term the Lower Twos have had in Pre-Prep!

In English, the children have immersed themselves in poetry of many different styles, themes and periods of time. Each child chose their favourite poem to perform to their class – the performance skills of pitch, pace and volume have been very useful in the build up to our end of year production.

They have also enjoyed exploring ‘Quest stories’ and writing recount texts.

This term has seen further work on addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions and time. Having worked hard on these skills, the children have been enjoying applying their knowledge to problem solving situations and logic puzzles.

The trip to the Cotswold Farm Park was a real highlight and enhanced the Science topic of ‘Living Things’. The children are all keen to have some seaside adventures in the near future; having explored rock pools, UK seaside resorts and the history of beach holidays during our Geography and History lessons. They have also produced some lovely artwork based around our ‘Seaside’ theme.

As we come to the end of the year, it is rewarding to see the ‘Skills for Life’ input that the children have received coming to fruition. They have become incredibly independent and responsible, ready for their move into Year 3.

Many of the activities they undertook on the ‘Outside the Box’ day have really helped to promote these important Skills for Life (both at home and at school). It has been lovely to see them all mature so much, but we will miss them greatly as they move on!

news MIDDLE ONE NEWS

From Dinosaurs to the 19th Century

A real highlight for Middle One this term was the fantastic day of Rocks, Fossils and Dinosaurs at the start of term which linked to their new History topic, ‘Dinosaurs to the Iron Age’. Graham Wollard from ‘Portals to the Past’ led the girls on an exciting geological and palaeontological adventure. Graham is a well-known and respected figure in the fields of geology, fossil curation and palaeozoology and has contributed to the collections of many leading British museums. The pupils were able to explore wonderful scale models of the world in various stages of evolution including dinosaur models and high grade genuine fossil specimens. Later on in the term they moved on to learn about famous people such as Louis Braille, Grace Darling and Florence Nightingale.

History was really brought to life!

In English, the girls were trying to persuade people NOT to buy toys by designing colourful adverts and using rhetorical questions! They also spent some time learning their poems for the Summer Term ‘Project Fortnight’ activity. Some of the girls performed them to an examiner in July for their LAMDA exam. We think they’ve all worked really hard!

MIDDLE TWO NEWS

The Arctic and Tuvalu Middle Two have had a super term. They have been learning about Sustainability in our Geography lessons and furthered this learning during their fabulous trip to Naturesbase. You can read more about the trip on the next page. After learning about climate change, global warming and looking at the world’s emissions, the girls have written reports about two very different case studies, The Arctic and Tuvalu, showing how these places are changing due to climate change. Through these studies the girls have learnt how to take notes and write reports in their own words. This has also lead to some fabulous projects being enthusiastically made at home, using only recycled materials, during ‘Project Fortnight’.

English studies have taken them on different journeys, one to the Africa plains through Michael Morpurgo’s book, The Butterfly Lion and back in time where they studied fashion through the ages. The latter produced some excellent discussion about the difference between clothing and fashion, before then writing reports about historical fashions with the inclusion of prepositional phrases and noun phrases with adjectives. The Butterfly Lion, was a book enjoyed by all the children and brought about the opportunities to develop empathy for characters in the text and some insightful questions once we reached the climax of the story.

Naturesbase Middle Two’s residential visit to Naturesbase took place a little earlier this year in May. The visit took place in two halves, with Middle Two G departing on Sunday 13 May and returning on Wednesday 16 May when Middle Two D’s visit began.

Naturesbase, near Cilcennin in Wales, is an eco-friendly campsite run by Gyles and Alison Morris. The aim of the visit was to learn about sustainability, linking to their Geography topic this term.

The girls had an action-packed stay, which included a range of activities from campfire and den building to orienteering and a visit to the beach.

For some of the girls, it was their first experience of staying away from home, and for all it was an opportunity to develop team-building skills, working together and supporting each other.

UPPER ONE NEWS

Vicious Vikings appear!

The girls in Upper One have been studying hard this term, but have managed to fit in many activities out of the classroom too. Near the beginning of term they had a fabulous week in France, you can read more about this on page 12.

As part of their ‘The Anglo Saxons verses The Vikings’ topic each class had a live link up with Yorvik Centre in York and skyped a Viking! Their virtual visitor was able to show them artefacts, including weapons and clothing, and described life in Yorvik. He also answered questions from the girls.

Later on in the term the girls spent some time making and investigating coprolites (poo!) to find out what the Vikings ate. They discovered that poor and rich Vikings had different diets and that the foods eaten had been grown in England.

A day in May was spent focussing on Art at Compton Verney. The girls spent the morning in the gallery and the afternoon printing images they had designed. They took great interest in The Royal Wedding, having a go at designing Meghan’s wedding dress – a few designs were very close to the ‘real thing’!

UPPER TWO NEWS

A busy Final Term!

By Amelia This term was very busy for Upper Two, as it was jam-packed with events!

We have spent time during and after school rehearsing for our end of year production, Annie which we thoroughly enjoyed performing over two nights to all our family and friends.

On Friday 11 May we were at Warwick Junior School taking part in the Skills for Life ‘Outside the Box’ day in groups with the boys. The following week we were at Cranedale Centre in North Yorkshire which was a fun and educational residential trip that we all thoroughly enjoyed.

There have been a range of career talks given to us by different people with different jobs. We were also able to take on the task of running a stall in Squirrels’ Market and selling cakes at the Greville and Beaumont cake sale which raised money for their two House charities.To finish our time at Warwick Prep we had our leavers’ tea and a Hawaiian themed disco – what fun!

Cranedale

By Amelia and Zoe On Monday, we arrived at Cranedale Centre in North Yorkshire and everyone was excited to find out who was in their room. After we had our lunch we enjoyed learning how to start a fire in ‘Camp Fire Circle’ and being taken back in time to learn about Kirby Grindalythe’s history in Village Detectives. After that we all returned for dinner and we were then given our Eco-Books, which contained lots of activities to do around the centre.

“The meals were really nice. I thoroughly enjoyed doing the Eco-Books.” Emily On Tuesday, Group One went to Flamborough Head for Seashore Explorers where we caught crabs, learnt about caves and arches, sketched the Flamboroughsaurus and saw a baby seal! Then we visited the RSPB centre and saw lots of rare birds like puffins.

Group Two stayed at the centre. They went pond dipping catching newts and lots of different nymphs, played a complete and incomplete metamorphosis game, used a microscope to look at a flattened mayfly nymph so we could draw and label them, then we became herbivores, carnivores, top carnivores and a disease in the survival game. In the evening after dinner both groups practised orienteering for the next day.

“The staff were really friendly and welcoming and the food was amazing.” Elisabeth On Wednesday, Group One visited Levisham Moor for Moorland Explorers where we took measurements in the stream, identified some of the creatures in the stream, learnt about past inhabitants and accidently stepped upon an adder!

On Thursday, Group One stayed at the centre. They went pond dipping and caught over twenty newts! We compared the creatures to the ones we had found in the stream in Levisham Moors. We then did the other activities that Group Two did on Tuesday. Group Two went to Levisham Moors and when we caught our creatures in the stream we compared them to the ones in the pond. Like Group One, Group Two also found a snake! In the evening we were able to spend our pocket money in the shop at Cranedale.

On Friday, at breakfast we were all awarded a title and were given a tiara as it was the day before the Royal Wedding. Once all the tiaras were given out, we went on the low ropes course. It was one of our favourite activities and involved lots of team work. Then we got on the coach and made our way home.

It was a really fun and interesting trip and we were all very sad to leave.

Group Two went to Flamborough Head and did the same activities as Group One on Tuesday though they caught bigger crabs and had colder weather! At the centre, after a delicious dinner, we put our map reading skills to the test as we looked for the markers around the fields. Before bed the teachers gave us a surprise with a fun game of tag where the teachers were ‘it’!

Sport Round-up

by Hannah Constance, Sport Captain This year has been another busy year of Sport at Warwick Prep. We have enjoyed playing in lots of different fixtures and growing in strength.

We have hosted more tournaments than ever before, and competed with the boys in Athletics, Archery and Tennis.

The U11As started the year with a hockey GB master class, where we were coached by some of the Team GB hockey players which was very exciting. Scarlet and the hockey team were county runners up and progressed to the Midlands final, just barely missing the knockout rounds.

The U11s also had a strong hockey season and Mae, Isabella and Esme played for the Upper Two team in the Midlands finals. Jessica and her team reached the English Schools National Swimming finals and also went to the very competitive Bromsgrove Invitational gala, where the girls came 1st and 2nd in their relays against 16 other schools.

The Upper Ones also qualified for the IAPS National Swimming finals for both relays as well as individual events for Lixu and Esme. We have recently entered School Games Football and loved playing many fixtures.

Netball has been exciting for all years especially Middle Two as they went to their first tournament and the U11A team played excellently all season showing great commitment, versatility and teamwork. We had our best results at the IAPS tournament, and were close to reaching the knock out rounds.

Charlotte took her gymnastics team to the IAPS finals where they finished in 5th place and the U10s finished 3rd overall! The team went on to the ISGA finals, Charlotte and Holly secured places with the team finishing 6th. Not only have we hosted and participated in many Cross Country fixtures, we have had some brilliant performances for all years.

Middle Two won the RGS the Grange Cross Country competition beating 12 other schools and we represented the school brilliantly at the Regional Athletics Meet where our team of ten athletes competed against 20 Prep schools in the Central Southern region. Well done to all girls in their different events, and a special mention to the relay team who finished 7th overall.

Also a special mention must go to Caitlin in Middle Two and Isabella in Upper One who competed with the Upper Two girls in Athletics.

We have loved representing the school in some more unusual sports too; the golf team joined the boys’ school in the tournament in Droitwich, Remi competed in a Panathlon enjoying sports from Boccia to Wheelchair Basketball, and Esme took part in the IAPS Triathlon finals in London, finishing 12th place out of 55 competitors.

Sports Days in the Sun!

We have been very lucky with the weather so far for our Sports Days.

At the time of going to print we have only had the Reception and Lower School Sports Days so far, but both events have proved very successful and the children all thoroughly enjoyed themselves.

The best overall sports boy and sports girl in Lower Two this year were Isla Hinton who won the Victrix Ludorum and Sebastian Guest who won the Victor Ludorum. Well done, children!

During the day we completed eight different workshops, led by teachers from Warwick Prep and Warwick Junior School. We learnt many different life skills that will come in handy in the future such as making empathy bracelets, team building games, judgment games, mindfulness, yoga, composing a responsibility rap, understanding body language and sign language, how to inflate balloons without blowing into them, taking risks and showing confidence by talking to the boys, and perhaps a favourite for parents – how to set the table and fold clothes! It was such a fun event and we all thoroughly enjoyed it.

Annie The Musical Upper Two girls put on a memorable performance back in June of Annie The Musical, which really showcased the wonderful talents of our pupils and moved many parents, staff and friends to tears. The experience will be one to remember as the girls got to perform on a professional stage at the Bridge House Theatre.

Eleanor commented that “the charm of Annie was

brilliantly captured by Marlie. There were songs to showcase all the Upper Two’s singing talent.”

Marlie said that “Hope, who played Mr Warbucks, was amazing in character throughout the play and her acting and singing were spectacular”.

Musical Matters Miss Griggs reviews her first year at Warwick Prep…

My first year at Warwick Prep has been a busy but exciting time. I cannot believe that I am writing the last report of the year already! There have been so many wonderful opportunities for the girls and boys to perform and this term was no exception. The Summer Concert, held in Warwick Hall, showcased the musical talent that we have at Warwick Prep. With over 160 performers involved in this year’s concert, the audience were heartily responsive to confident and assured performances, and the choir certainly captured the spirit of the songs, engaging the audience with their smiling faces. I believe everyone left Warwick Hall feeling happy and uplifted. With so many girls playing instruments it is vital that they have the experience of ensemble playing, so new groups like the Brass Group and Reeds Rule! have been formed and we were all thrilled with their debut performances.

We hope to develop more opportunities for the pianists next year.

Morning Melodies provided more opportunity for solo performances this year, and this term we were delighted to see how well the girls are progressing, performing with such musicality and expression.

Some of the girls participated in the Leamington Spa Festival and we congratulate Teagen Eivers on winning the Harp Class. The Brass Competition held at Bablake School was also a success. The brass ensemble came 2nd in the quartet class, and Emily Strens came 3rd in the Slow Melody for the 10 years and under section.

Over the last few weeks, children have been sharing their music in Pre-Prep assemblies, inspiring the younger children and accompanying the hymns in Prep assemblies. We will definitely be encouraging more of this next year.

Of course, one of the many highlights this year was the Upper Two production of Annie. The girls rose to the challenge of this major musical and demonstrated to us all their talent for the arts. Heart warming, funny and dramatic performances left us all feeling proud at the standard these girls achieved. Pirates of the Curry Bean performed by Lower Two was also very exciting and the children sang with great energy, supported by our own ‘in house’ band: Upper One girls Jessica Hartshorn and Tamira Surendra Kumar on flute, Megan Flood on cello and Mr Jones on drums.

Throughout the year, many girls have taken Trinity, ABRSM and Rock School examinations with excellent results. We are awaiting the summer results but congratulations to all of the girls listed on the next page. Your stars will appear on the Hall of Fame!

Special thanks to my music leaders who have been absolute super stars guiding me through my first year! Emily Clarke – Instrumental Captain, Hope Brotherhood – Choral Captain and our overall Music Captain, Megan Flood.

Out of this world experience A series of inspirational Science events took place over the course of the Spring and Summer Terms, to introduce the wonders of space science to our pupils. Many of the events ran in conjunction with King’s High School.

The month long activities kicked off with the arrival of the ‘moon’ at Warwick Prep!

The Science Department held a special assembly, presented by Head of Science, Mrs Charl and Science Teacher, Miss Wilby. Both of whom dressed up as astronauts. They informed children about the exciting news that the moon had just landed at Warwick Prep! The moon then went ‘on tour’ around the school enabling all the children to get up close and personal with the lunar rock.

Throughout the week the pupils were able to enjoy unique and interactive experiences of astronomy during their lessons. Other highlights included examining some hand-sized meteorites, enabling pupils to touch a real piece of space, a 1.2 billion year old piece of Mars and a 4.3 billion year old carbonaceous chondrite meteorite – the oldest object you will ever hold in your hands!

Immersive Experiences’ award winning mobile planetarium also visited the Prep during the week, delighting children, from Nursery to Upper Two, taking them on a range of adventures across planets and through the Space Age! Mrs Charl said: “It has been very exciting and a privilege to have these special materials in school.” Miss Wilby, STEAM Coordinator, KS2 and KS3 commented: “The security of the lunar rock was taken very seriously as NASA understandably regards the moon rocks as irreplaceable!”

Stargazing Live, was an event that ran in conjunction with Stratford-upon-Avon Astronomical Society and took place in March with demonstrations, telescope talks and some live star gazing!

The Primary School Space Day was a huge hit in April with pupils taking part from five different schools; Warwick Prep, Warwick Junior, Newburgh, All Saints and Coten End. The day kicked off with a briefing from Space Scientist in Residence at King’s High School, Mr John McGuire. The children took part in a carousel of activities throughout the day including Space Crew Training challenges, rocketry competitions and working out how to escape from a Soyuz capsule.

The culmination of the Space activities was the live link-up with the International Space Station. Ex-Squirrel, Eleanor Griffin from King’s High welcomed US Astronaut Ricky Arnold to Warwick as he orbited the UK aboard the ISS. He answered pre-selected questions from girls, aged 9-17 years old, from King’s High and Warwick Prep. The veteran NASA Astronaut (himself a former teacher) told the girls: ‘There is life beyond Earth’; ‘A future colony on Mars could be sustainable, one year on from landing’; ‘The most beautiful sight from the International Space Station is Europe’, and ‘Taste doesn’t change in Space – I still like ice cream, cookies and steak!’

Richard Nicholson, Head Master of King’s High, said: “We are always looking for outstanding opportunities to support the pupils’ interests, both inside and outside the classroom. The link-up to the ISS was the thrilling culmination of a range of events, supported by our very own Space Scientist in Residence.”

First Public Art Exhibition

Youthful creativity met historic splendour, when pupils from King’s High and Warwick Prep held their first ever public art exhibition in the glittering Regency Ballroom of The Court House, in Jury Street. Clare Sawdon, High Sheriff of Warwickshire, Cllr Richard Eddy, Mayor of Warwick and Cllr Heather Calver, Mayor of Royal Leamington Spa, were among guests who enjoyed a preview of the pupils’ artwork.

The exhibition, kindly supported by our parents’ associations, KHAPS and WPSA, featured a dazzling array of drawings, multi-media, ceramics, pottery, and paintings, with work from some of the youngest pupils – aged 5 years old - at Warwick Prep, all the way up to King’s A Level students. The www.kingshighwarwick.co.uk exhibition showcased ‘incredible talent from all ages’, said Clare Sawdon.

Cllr Richard Eddy said the exhibition was “beautifully curated, and a wonderful celebration of talent.” Head Master, Mr Nicholson said: “We felt very privileged to showcase our pupils’ work in one of the most historic and beautiful buildings in Warwick. The links between King’s, Warwick Prep and the town of Warwick are very strong, and we were delighted so many people came to share in this celebration of our pupils’ creativity.”

Aerial photograph of Project One Campus June 2018 This is a very exciting time for our pupils as the new buildings on the Myton Road campus are taking shape. Project One Campus is progressing well with the King’s High main school building on track to open for September 2019.

Shared Sixth Form Centre for King’s High and Warwick School With most of the building work on the Sixth Form Centre being completed during the summer, this new and innovative space will be available from September for a variety of purposes, including a range of Friday Afternoon activities, clubs, lunchtime talks and parent events as well as being the base for the Warwick School careers team. The Centre will receive its final fit-out during the summer of 2019 and will then be opened as the shared Sixth Form Centre from September of that year.

Talent Show On Friday 8 June, the first ever Landor Association Talent Show was held at King’s High School with twelve girls representing Warwick Prep. The girls provided the audience with an array of performances from synchronised swimming with a twist to an amazing impression of Donald Trump. The evening was rounded off with a disappearing hog roast and a collection for Myton Hospice.

Charity Update Sport Relief

On Monday 4 June, the whole school took part in a special Sport Relief Celebration assembly led by Mrs Dodsworth.

The assembly was in aid of the amazing £8,357.75 that was raised for Sport Relief last term following the sponsored Welly Walk. The children were joined

by Phoebe Lill, the Schools Fundraising Associate from Comic Relief and three representatives from Positive Youth Foundation, a charity based in Coventry.

Phoebe commented, “Here at Comic Relief, we have been blown away by the commitment and generosity of the Warwick Prep community. We wanted to say a special thank you by bringing one of our Comic Relief funded projects into school, as we know it’s really important for children to understand where the money goes.

The project we invited was the Positive Youth Foundation, a CR-funded project based in Coventry, a multi-faceted organisation who primarily help young people from deprived backgrounds access a range of different support services and pastoral opportunities.”

A number of the children received a certificate and special gift from the visitors as they raised over £100 each. Thank you to the very generous community of Warwick Prep.

House Charity Event Children from Beaumont and Greville held a charity cake sale this term in aid of their House charities: Warwickshire Foodbank Van and Redwings Horse Sanctuary. An amazing £577.37 was raised!

Investigates…

STEMILLIONS Cyril had been thrilled to hear all about the Space activity taking place so decided to pop along to our STEMillions Club to find out more about Science.

Zoe Lancaster was also there to interview Miss Wilby and help keep Cyril on planet Earth.

STEMillions is a joint King’s High/Warwick Prep club that takes place at Warwick Prep School every week and is facilitated by Miss Wilby, KS2 & KS3 STEAM Coordinator.

Q What do you do in STEMillions?

A Miss Wilby: I wanted to introduce the girls to all things related to STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics) and help inspire the next generation of women into these subjects.

A Shivanshi: Each week we look at women in STEAM and complete an activity based around woman scientists. For example we have covered Dr Bindi Brooks, an inspiring Research Fellow in Mathematical Sciences, we looked at Arthi Anand, a clinical scientist working for the NHS. Also Orla Murphy, who is an audio engineer, was really interesting as she has just designed the latest audio system for the new Jaguar!

Q What is the involvement of the King’s High pupils?

Q How much do you think the girls at Warwick Prep enjoy STEMillions?

A Shivanshi Bhatt: I am the Chief STEMillions Officer and I am helped

by Amber Bellamy and Gigi Thomas. We are in Year 9 at King’s High.

We lead the sessions each week and Miss Wilby facilitates these sessions for us and provides all the materials we may require.

A Miss Wilby: The Prep girls love the club as not only do get they get to work with older pupils at King’s High who act as role models but they get to cover activities and interesting subjects not covered in their normal Science or STEAM lessons in school. It helps with their scientific learning. The King’s girls also really enjoy it as it gives them leadership opportunities and real exposure to industry role models.

It brings STEAM to life in a very practical way.

Q What made you set up the club?

Girls from Upper One and Upper Two at Warwick Prep have been able to join girls from Years 7, 8 and 9 from King’s High at the club which takes place after school.

Moving on…

Our Year 8 sisters and Sixth Form mothers are very reassuring and approachable so don’t worry!

We spoke to 4 girls who left Warwick Prep last summer and moved onto King’s High and asked them to tell us about their first year at senior school.

Don’t worry about the homework as you are given enough time to complete it.

Q Have you got any advice for Prep girls moving onto KHS?

Q What have you enjoyed about your first year at King’s?

Everyone is nice and helpful and the teachers are willing to help.

Freedom; the staff leave us to organise ourselves much more!

Don’t worry about being put into sets as everyone achieves and there are opportunities to move.

I like having my own locker and being responsible for my keys!

The number of clubs; there are different clubs offered each term including some unusual ones for example there is an Art & Chemistry combined club.

Q Was it better than you expected?

We had been so well prepared over the years at Warwick Prep through the various workshops and visits that we had up at King’s High that we knew what to expect.

We loved the Year 7 assembly that the King’s girls put on for us whilst we were at the Prep as well.

Q What has been your highlight from your first year?

The Bonding trip was excellent.

Play in a Day which was great fun.

Athletics and games in general – learning more and being challenged and encouraged and the good choice of sports.

Seeing visiting Prep girls come up to King’s. It was lovely to see familiar faces!

Q How did you feel about the transition before you moved?

By Upper Two, we felt ready to move onto a new stage and new challenges but we felt so well prepared having been given all our responsibilities in the Upper School at Warwick Prep.

Swashbuckling Lower Twos!

The end of year performance for Lower Two was Pirates of the Curry Bean. The children worked incredibly as a team and their performance was magical! The boys and girls thoroughly enjoyed practising on a stage and performing to their parents, grandparents and teachers.

It was an amazing achievement for children so young.

Q How busy is the office?

Mia went along to interview Ms Taylor (Executive Assistant to the Head) to find out more about life in the School Office.

A The School Office is open from 8:00am until 5:00pm every day. (expect Friday when we close at 4:30pm). It is a very busy, vibrant office to work in. We often get parents coming in during the morning bringing in items such as forgotten PE kit! The teachers also pop in and out throughout the day with various queries. We are the ‘hub’ of the school!

Q How long have you worked with Mrs Dodsworth? What do you do in your job?

A I have been at Warwick Prep for four months now and thoroughly enjoy working with Mrs Dodsworth. My main responsibility is to provide support for Mrs Dodsworth and to oversee the administration and operations of the school, ensuring that everything runs smoothly.

The office is also open for six weeks during school holidays but shorter hours from 9:00am until 1:00pm.

Q Where did you work before?

A I previously worked in local government in County Down, Northern Ireland for 15 years.

Q What is the main difference in working in a school?

A I now work with children which I really enjoy. There is a real variety in the work – no two days are ever the same! I do have to get up earlier and the pace is very fast but I enjoy the longer holidays.

Q How many members are there in your team? And what do they do?

A There are five members in the School Office team, including myself.

Miss Lewis manages the Reception area and is the friendly face that visitors will first see. Mrs Lihou runs the After School Care bookings.

Mrs Skillett works on the HR and Finance side and manages the ordering of optional items such as rucksacks and water bottles. Finally, Mrs Crafts is the administrator for all the different after school activities.
