welcome

Welcome from the Head It gives me enormous pleasure to introduce this term’s Warwick Prep Life to you. As ever, we are indebted to our Year 6 Editors who have done a magnificent job of capturing the essence of the Summer Term at Warwick Prep. This term has been rather more special than usual as we have seen the green shoots of recovery to a return of normality. There were a few tears shed as our wonderful Year 6 children brought the Bridge House Theatre back to life with their fantastic production of ‘Mulan.’ After the theatre had been closed for fifteen long months, it was a privilege to provide the first performance on the boards to a live audience. Similarly, the Summer Concerts held in the last few weeks in Warwick Hall have not only enabled us to welcome parents back to events, but provided a fitting showcase to share the creative music making that has continued through school closure and bubbling of our year groups. We have been thrilled to see the return of fixtures against other schools and, again, the opportunity to welcome parents onto site to watch their children compete. At the time of writing, the Great British Summer

has scuppered our plans for a normal Prep department Sports Day, but the girls have nonetheless enjoyed a series of indoor activities. Of course, none of this would have been possible without the incredible ‘Squirrel Spirit’ shown by all our children during this most challenging of years. Children at Warwick Prep have continued to practise their instruments, kept fit and active in a myriad of different ways and generally kept everyone’s spirits high. In addition, we are blessed with the most special community of adults at Warwick Prep: WPSA have continued to run events in person and virtually for us all to enjoy, and have continued with their phenomenal fundraising, ending the year by completing their pledge to raise £50,000 in celebration of their 50th year. We are also indebted to the team of staff who keep Warwick Prep afloat. My sincerest thanks, admiration and appreciation goes to each and every one of them for all they have contributed during this past year.

in this year with us. Whether you are an existing parent reading here of your child’s achievements, a new parent looking forward to joining us in September or a longstanding loyal friend of the school, we are only ever the sum of our parts – I wish you all a very happy Summer holiday! Mrs Hellen Dodsworth

As the school year draws to a close, it remains for me to thank you for sharing

Welcome from the Principal It is a cliché to talk about a ‘new normal’ but here on site, this term has been more ‘normal’ than at any time in the last fifteen months. Whilst the delay to further Covid restrictions being lifted meant that our schools moved to ‘Plan B’ arrangements, it has been a joy to see and hear pupils of all ages bring the campus back to life with their musical and theatrical performances and their sporting activities. Seeing the first live performances in Warwick Hall and the Bridge House Theatre since the start of the pandemic was an emotional experience for all, as was great hosting of the first sports matches. A deep frustration for us all has been the fact that we have not been able to see you, our parents and families, as much as we would have liked. We are therefore planning a Foundation weekend, 24 - 26 September, to welcome everyone back to the campus, celebrating our schools and what makes our Foundation community so special. Please make a note of those dates in your diaries further details will follow. The pandemic has meant that our schools have worked more closely together than ever before, whilst respecting their own

unique traditions and heritage. Developing the ‘Best of Both Worlds’ for our pupils on this site - creating opportunities for them to work and grow together - has been at the forefront of our minds. There are a number of initiatives which will be brought to fruition in the new academic year, both for our younger pupils and those in the senior schools. The end of the academic year is always a time of farewells. I know we will all wish our Upper Sixth leavers the very best for the future; we look forward to staying in touch with them, not least through the mentoring programme which many parents have generously supported. There are also significant changes in our Governing Body. David Stevens, currently the Foundation Chair of Governors, along with Tony Cocker, Vice-Chair, Andrew Firth, formerly Vice-Chair and subsequently Chair of the Warwick School Board, all retire after many years of service, as do Clare Sawdon DL and Moira-Anne Grainger. Nick Button and Jason Strain, formerly on the Kingsley Board, also retire this year. Sally Austin, a former pupil at King’s High, and David Loudon become Chair and Vice-Chair

respectively. I would like to thank all our retiring governors for all they have given to the Foundation, and those newly appointed for all that is to come. Finally, I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your support over the last year. It has been a very complex time for everyone, but we have emerged as a strong Foundation community, with a vibrant and exciting future. Mr Richard Nicholson

news NURSERY NEWS

Minibeasts and More! The summer term in the Nursery has been all about making the most of the warmer weather with the children spending lots of time outdoors, developing a healthy lifestyle and learning about the world around them. They have loved their minibeast topic; searching for bugs at Forest School and making bug hotels. All three classes have been watching caterpillars grow, make a cocoon and hatch into painted lady butterflies. A highlight for the children was the moment the butterflies were released. They were very excited watching them take their first tentative flights into the sky. The children have enjoyed getting creative, making wonderful pictures and models of bees, spiders, caterpillars, ladybirds, frogs and snails. Measuring their playdough worms with cubes was great fun too!

NHT releasing their butterflies

Sports Day The children have been making the most of our Foundation facilities as they visited the astro pitch to practise for Sports Day. With the help of the PE Department, they particularly enjoyed their triathlon race; running, pedalling a bicycle and ‘swimming’!

NPB's bee artwork

Practising for Sports Day Transport Topic The new road way in the Nursery garden has come into its own with their transport topic and the children have been learning all about the importance of road safety. They have loved racing cars down a ramp, predicting which will go the furthest and dipping cars in paint to make patterned tracks.

Warwick PrepLife RECEPTION NEWS

All about the Animals! At the beginning of this term, Reception enjoyed learning about farms. The children shared some exciting farm-related stories including ‘What the Ladybird Heard’ by Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler, and ‘Rosie’s Walk’ by Pat Hutchins. Reception enjoyed designing their own rosettes and writing farm animal fact files. In Music, each class composed and performed their own farm rhymes.

The second half of term began with great excitement when ‘Teach Rex’ visited with a collection of their dinosaurs. Sam and Joe brought along their T-Rex, Jam, who pretended to eat some of the children and staff! The children were all delighted to meet the baby dinosaurs and take part in some magical movies using a green screen!

Year 1 have had a very happy and busy term! The children really enjoyed learning all about the Amazon Rainforest. They started their topic by reading about a little girl called Taina. She inspired Year 1 to learn all about her home and compare it to theirs. Many Skills for Life have been used, including curiosity to find out more about the amazing rainforest and all that it provides for the animals and people that live there and the wider world. As well as empathy, for the destruction of the rainforests and how we need to save them.

L I F E

The children have loved all the Science experiments linked to their topic; a favourite was learning how rain is really made and making their very own raincloud in a jar! Mini rainforests were created in the form of dioramas and the children worked creatively, twisting, cutting and drawing to make their own mini rainforests!

1JB at Forest School

A highlight of the term was Forest School where the children were free to explore the grounds for minibeasts and pond life. All loved exploring the habitats and life cycles of these tiny creatures. What a wonderful end to an exciting year!

Warwick PrepLife YEAR 2 NEWS

Oh, I do like to be Beside the Seaside This term, the fabulous Year 2 children have been enthusiastic when learning about seaside holidays from Victorian and Edwardian times. They have made comparisons between holidays from those historical periods and today – some of the changes in clothing, travel, food and activities have provoked much curiosity and discussion. This topic has also inspired some lovely artwork; including beach hut paintings in the style of Lynette Merry. The term has culminated in exciting preparations for Year 2’s end of year summer production, ‘Wow! What a Year!’. The play is all about the experiences we have been through during the last year in a fun, comical manner – the children have certainly had a good giggle at the jokes during rehearsal time! We even have our very own experts, scientists, Sirus the Virus and Boris Johnson.

As the children’s time in Pre-Prep comes to an end, the staff would like to say… you have been superstars and we wish you all much happiness and success as you move to Year 3 – we’ll miss you!

Year 3 have impressed with their Project Fortnight this term; they spoke to their classes about various topics from learning to sew, cooking new recipes, painting in the style of famous artists, discovering facts about magnets and even building a pond! So many Skills for Life were being practised.

SK

Project Fortnight and Persuasive Writing LS FO IL L I F E

During their Science lessons, Year 3 have been investigating the properties of a variety of materials including the absorbance of a variety of fabrics. Persuasive Writing In English, the girls have also been using their persuasive skills when writing adverts for toys and trying to persuade grown-ups to let them go to bed later! Year 3 shared some very good reasons such as: they’ll be able to enjoy family time playing a game, they can read books and learn interesting information as well as giving them a sense of responsibility. They used some fantastic imperative verbs whilst writing their own play scripts. We definitely have some budding writers and directors in Year 3! The girls have also discovered calligrams where letters and words are arranged to reflect the themes or subject matter. The girls found plenty of ways to enjoy being outside for every day of June.

Romans and Flour Friends It has been another busy term for the Year 4 girls; what a year! A highlight being a trip to Forest School, led by Mrs Lees. The girls had a wonderful time pond dipping, den building, playing in the mud kitchen, eating popcorn and completing a natural treasure hunt.

Sophie, Noemie, Maggie, Lizzie and Erin

In June, Year 4 visited Warwick Castle to link with their History work from the Spring. They spent the day enjoying views from the ramparts, finding out about when the castle was first built and discovering who lived at the castle in the past.

Warwick Castle Trip

Roman Day Roman day was a big hit with Year 4, everyone looked amazing in their costumes and the girls enjoyed creating Roman mosaics, drama activities and learning about gruesome Roman medicine! During their English lessons, the girls wrote balanced arguments for and against being a Roman soldier (not a job for ladies they discovered!) and enjoyed a book study of ‘The Iron Man’ by Ted Hughes.

Celia, Theodora and Molly Flour Friends

Hollie, Annika, Connie, Archie

The Skills for Life project, ‘Flour Friends’ proved to be the highlight of the year! The girls were asked to look after a 1kg bag of flour as they named it, dressed it and keep it entertained. The Flour Friends were brought into school in buggies and baby carriers and were certainly well taken care of!

Magnifique! Year 5’s French themed day was a huge success. After a delicious petitdéjeuner of freshly baked croissant et jus d’orange, the girls constructed model Eiffel Towers. They then took part in fun French games and made fameux gâteau marbré au yaourt. They were delicious! All to the sound of the accordéon! Magnifique! Visiting Warwick School Chapel To support their History topic of WW1, Year 5 visited the Warwick School Chapel. The girls were fascinated by the story told by Mr Frykman, the Warwick School Archivist, of how the Warwickian soldiers lost their lives on the battle fields in France.

Warwick PrepLife YEAR 6 NEWS

What a way to end the Year! By Purdie and Mya The final term for Year 6 has been a busy and fun time. We were able to go ahead with our ‘Make Your Money Grow’ sale. Each team of 4 or 5 girls had created a business, producing goods to sell at a special market day. We were able to hold the market outside and all pupils from Year 2 to Year 5 were very excited to come and see all of the stalls and spend their money. Each team were very proud as they all managed to make a significant profit.

Challenge Academy A highlight of the term would have to be Challenge Academy. We took part in many team challenges, learning about the importance of communication and trust. The most demanding part of the day for many was the high wire course. This involved 3 metre aerial obstacles, a 9 metre aerial traverse (which some girls managed to attempt with their eyes shut). To return to ‘terra firma’ we had to take a leap of faith (a powerfan descender) and step off the 30ft platform for a freefall descent. For many of us, this was our favourite activity as we felt like we were flying.

Ellie and Shaan Science and STEAM In between all the fun we have also managed to fit in a little work too! In Science we watched eggs hatch and chicks emerge live on ‘chick cam’ and then got to hold the chicks whilst learning about the life cycle of a chicken. We also made our own pH indicator from red cabbage and investigated the old wives' tale about stinging nettles and dock leaves. In STEAM we designed and then built a lunar lander – the aim being for the lander to come down to Earth with as little a bump as possible, therefore enabling the space ‘corkanaut’ (cork astronaut!) inside, to stay inside the lander and not be hurled to their uncorkunate demise! The main highlight of the term would have to be putting on the production of ‘Mulan’. Read more about this on page 12.

year 6 production

Mulan By Lottie and Izzy Year 6 put on an outstanding performance of Mulan, which showcased a wide range of talents! Drummers added a real touch of drama while the dancers were elegant and stylish. All were supported brilliantly by the tech crew. The Legend of Mulan is based on an ancient Chinese poem. It tells the story of a girl who wishes to save her father from forced conscription in the Chinese Army. Dressed as a boy, she becomes a distinguished warrior and heroine. We had lots of fun working together as a year group and enjoyed every second of rehearsing and performing. We were all dedicated to the production as we wanted to put on an amazing show! We would like to thank all the staff involved for all their hard work, it has been a highlight of the year!

Sports Round-up The children at Warwick Prep have thrived in Sport over this term, with the return of fixtures and Sports Day. The spirit and enthusiasm of our children is magnificent; they throw themselves into every opportunity on offer. Over the summer term, the pupils have immersed themselves into the summer sports. For the first time, Prep girls have had the opportunity to take part in athletics clubs, tennis club and squad as well as lots of cricket! It has been wonderful to watch the children learn so many new skills.

U9 Gymnastics Squad Gymnastics Our U9, U10 and U11 gymnastics squads joined our King's High U13 and U15's remotely to compete in the Independent Schools Gymnastics Association's National Championships. 215 girls from 12 schools across the country competed live to judges on screens. Our 15 girls performed brilliantly on floor and were awarded commemorative medals from ISGA. Well done to all girls who performed.

Year 6 Cricket This year has demonstrated to us how important sport and physical activity is not only for our physical health, but also our mental health. Our children have loved playing again and we look forward to what next year brings. As a department we wish all our current Year 6 girls good luck in the next chapter of their sporting and school lives and thank them for demonstrating great leadership skills and positivity.

Swimming Our swimmers have had virtual galas against other schools as well as in pool galas against Warwick Junior School. Read more about this on page 18. It has been brilliant to have the children back in the water, they have loved it! Sports Day The highlight of the term was Sports Day. From Nursery with their fabulous Olympic theme to the tremendous determination and enthusiasm of children in their races across the school. Well done, children! All the children have benefited from the state-of-the-art facilities. From Nursery to Year 6, the pupils have visited the astro pitch for their games lessons and made use of the fantastic space. Year 6 have learnt about health and wellbeing in the fitness suite and the tennis courts have been buzzing with clubs.

interviews

Question Time Mrs Johnson, Director of Studies By Purdie and Grace Editors Purdie and Grace went to find out more about Mrs Johnson, Director of Studies, and her first year at Warwick Prep. Q What has been your most enjoyable moment at Warwick Prep so far? A It would have to be going to Challenge Academy with Year 6. It was great fun going on a school trip and I enjoyed being challenged! Q What do you do within your role as Director of Studies? A I oversee all the curriculum subjects and make sure the teaching and learning across the school can be the best it can be, as well as inspiring and engaging for the children. I work closely with the Heads of Department to do this. Q What do you enjoy about being Director of Studies? A It gives me a picture of all the teaching and learning going on in school, from Nursery, right the way through to Year 6 and even beyond. I work with all different teachers, pupils and our amazing colleagues at King’s High. Q Which subjects do you teach? A I teach English and Maths. I am also a Year 6 Form Tutor so I also teach them PSHEE.

Q What is your favourite subject to teach? A English! I have always loved literature and words. I also enjoy reading and poetry. I had an inspiring English teacher when I was at school and now I want to be the one inspiring others to love English too. Q Do you have any hobbies? A Since lockdown, I have really got into gardening. I moved to a new house last year and I have been bringing the garden back to life, with a little bit of help from my children. I also enjoy walking, as I solve a lot of problems walking.

Cyril Investigates… Growth Mindset Club By Lottie and Izzy Cyril joined Editors Lottie and Izzy as they went along to the new Growth Mindset club, with Mrs Bartley. Q What is Growth Mindset Club about? A There are two types of mindset; a fixed mindset, meaning that you believe you are either good or bad at something and you can’t change that, and a growth mindset. So Growth Mindset club teaches the girls that their abilities can improve over time and that mistakes are ok, as they help us to learn. I really like the quote “We do not need magic to transform our world. We carry all the power we need inside ourselves already”, by J.K. Rowling. Q Which year groups are involved in the club and why do they enjoy it? A At the moment it is just Year 4 as that is the year group I teach.

I have asked the girls what they enjoy most about the club.

Amelie – “I enjoy doing all the creative things that we get to do – we do lots of fun things.”

Piper – “When you’ve had a busy day, it helps to calm you down.”

Q When did the club start? A At the beginning of the Summer Term. The club runs on a Tuesday after school. Q Why did you consider running the club? A After remote learning, I wanted to offer the girls an opportunity to continue to develop their Skills for Life, seeing themselves as positive learners and being kind to themselves when they make a mistake. I also thought it would be a nice, calm club at the end of a busy day, with lots of opportunities to be creative and to talk about our feelings.

14

Q How do the children benefit from having a Growth Mindset? A The right mindset can help you to feel happy and be successful. When you learn how to have a growth mindset, you can get better at things, which will make you feel empowered and will motivate you to try even harder. Georgie “It gives me new ways to keep calm in different situations.” Ella – “Having a growth mindset has helped me to say ‘I can’t do it yet’, instead of just ‘I can’t do it”. Ella and Amelia

Musical Matters Throughout the year, our Hymn Practice has become an opportunity for children to share their music. Not through singing collectively but through our weekly remote ‘Music Maestros’ informal concerts. The children have enjoyed watching their peers perform, it has been a really positive experience for all and an inspiration to the younger children who are not always able to see individual performances. ABRSM and Trinity Examinations Fortunately, we have been able to continue with music exams this term and with nearly 70 girls taking ABRSM and Trinity Examinations across all classes of instruments up to Grade 4, we are excited about the future of music making in the department!

Year 6 Percussion Ensemble

Year 5 Choir

Year 3 String Ensemble

Summer Concerts The year group ensembles have continued to rehearse each week and they were very excited to finally be able to perform in the live Summer Concerts. Although the programme was slightly shorter, the pieces performed by each ensemble were of a high standard and the joy of performing was evident from the smiles and a few nervous moments. It was lovely to see family supporting and we hope that next year we will be able to extend the invitations to the wider Prep community, so that everyone can share in the talents and joy of live performances.

interview

Behind the Scenes – Head Chef By Mya and Grace Mya and Grace met with our new Head Chef, Mr Parsons, to find out more about the Catering Department at Warwick Prep. Q What inspired you to become a chef? A My mother inspired me the most. Q What is your favourite cuisine and why? A It would have to be fusion because you use elements from different cuisines to create fun and interesting food. Q W hat do you enjoy most about being the Head Chef at Warwick Prep? A I love seeing the children enjoying the food! I like to receive feedback too, so we can learn what the pupils enjoy the most. Q How long have you been a chef? A I have been a chef for 36 years.

Charity News At the start of term our House Officials selected a charity for each house to support. Beaumont chose Warwick Cancer Research Centre, Rich raised money for the NSPCC, Greville selected Save the Children and Dudley supported the RSPCA. Pupils were asked to help with extra jobs at home, and rather than being rewarded with pocket money for themselves, parents made donations to the charities. This event helped our children to learn that their actions and efforts can directly benefit others. Year 6 very generously gave additional money to these charities, donating some of their substantial profits from the ‘Make Your Money Grow’ initiative and from Squirrels Market.

16

Q How many people are a part of the catering team? A There are 10 members of the catering team at Warwick Prep, within the team of 56 members of staff across the Foundation, producing on average 16,151 meals per week!

News from our Digital Leaders Our Year 5 Digital Leaders have been busy putting together some information about online safety. Here are their main highlights, you can find their full report on our website by scanning the QR code. Online Games Parents should consider the games their children are playing. Look at the PEGI ratings to see if they are suitable. Great programming games include: Lightbot, Scratch Junior and Scratch. Cyberbullying This is a really important issue for us. Please help your child to understand how to report and block messages to stop cyberbullying. It can cause anxiety, anger, humiliation and we think it is wrong and shouldn’t be happening.

Here are our School Smart Rules to share with your child:

Top Tips:

Ask an adult if you are unsure

• Check the age ratings on films and apps – check YouTube settings.

R always check your information is reliable

• Use child friendly search engines like www.swiggle.org.uk.

Wait to check with an adult before you click

• Check the data saved about your child – are you happy before you download?

Inspire others to be supportive online

• Disable pop-ups and in-app purchases. (It will save you lots of money!) • Teach your child how to block and report inappropriate material.

Watch out for fake emails and sites

Consider your digital footprint K always be kind in whatever you post

Forest School At Forest School, Nursery and Reception started the term planting a variety of vegetables. The children tended them each week watering and thinning out the seedlings. The children have also had great fun finding a whole range of minibeasts on bug hunts including snails, millipedes, worms, and more recently ladybird larvae. A very popular activity has been pond dipping, as the children discovered there are newts in the pond as well as fish and snails. Both Nursery and Reception relish having a fire in the firepit, understanding how important it is to keep themselves safe. They enjoying making popcorn and toasted marshmallows accompanied by hot chocolate.

wpsa Three of these departing committee members are also current officers of the committee: Antonia Valentine (Vice Chair), Viv Bosworth (Treasurer) and Caroline Johnson (Secretary). I would like to say a special thank you to them for all their outstanding efforts over the years, they will be hugely missed.

WPSA’s £50,000 Pledge by Helen Owen, WPSA Chair In 2018 WPSA pledged to raise £50,000 to go towards the new Prep playspaces as part of Project One Campus. This coincided with the 50th anniversary of the creation of the parent teacher association. WPSA were on course to hit the target in 2020 but unfortunately, Covid-19 put a halt to our fundraising activities.

Antonia Valentine

Viv Bosworth

Caroline Johnson

WPSA are always looking for new members to join the committee. Our virtual AGM in September is an ideal opportunity to find out more about getting involved (details to follow). Alternatively, please contact me directly (helen.owen@wpsassociation.org) should you be interested in joining the team. We have spaces for committee members, class reps, parent helpers and uniform shop helpers.

The past 18 months have been challenging for us all, but WPSA still managed to raise funds by holding a number of successful virtual events and the uniform shop team did an amazing job with virtual online uniform sales, ensuring parents were still able to benefit from quality second-hand uniform.

We plan to send out a survey to ask the children and parents what they want from WPSA in the future as it is an ideal opportunity to regroup and consider how we evolve our traditional run of events, and perhaps move towards a hybrid model of virtual and face-to-face initiatives.

Thanks to the dedication of the WPSA Team I am delighted to share that WPSA has now achieved the £50,000 target!

In the meantime, we have recently installed our beautiful Warwick Prep Family Tree and everyone has the opportunity to sponsor a personalised oak leaf or acorn. Scan the QR code to find out more.

Funds raised have gone towards the new playspace with further enhancements being planned for the coming year based on the ideas of the children, now they have had the opportunity to use the space. WPSA Committee Several long-standing Committee members will sadly be leaving us at the end of this term as their children embark on their next stages of education after Warwick Prep and I would like to take this opportunity to give our thanks to them all.
