The Building for Compassion Capital Campaign began in 2009 to provide the means for renovation and expansion of the building at 1670 JFK Road, which was purchased through an estate gift from Mrs. Ralph W. Aigler. The campaign was conducted by a volunteer committee with the assistance of an extensive calling team of area residents. Together, these individuals worked to ensure that Hospice of Dubuque can continue to efficiently and effectively provide compassionate hospice care, grief counseling and educational programs to those in the tri-state area needing and desiring the services of this community’s nonprofit hospice. A ribbon-cutting ceremony will also be held Monday, September 20, at noon. All are invited to attend.

Bereavement Support Groups If you are interested in attending the upcoming Fall Bereavement Support Groups, or would like more information on the classes, call 563.582.1220.

I am honored to be writing from Hospice of Dubuque’s new home at 1670 JFK Road. This facility is affirmation of the community’s value of the services provided by Hospice of Dubuque over the past 27 years. The timeline for conducting the capital campaign and completing the building renovation was very short—less than one year. Yet, the move was accomplished May 14, 2010, two weeks prior to the expiration of the Asbury Square lease. As capital campaign volunteers made calls, they had the opportunity to educate donors regarding Hospice of Dubuque’s services. They also had the opportunity to hear hospice stories from the perspective of those who have received services. Throughout the campaign and the building renovation, it was so gratifying to hear over and over again, “You took care of my ________ (loved one), so I want to do this for you”. Gifts ranging from a few dollars to thousands of dollars were received in memory of loved ones who had been served by Hospice of Dubuque. Likewise, vendors providing “On moving services and/or supplies for the building project often included in-kind donations stating a desire to support day, service to client Hospice of Dubuque for all the “good work” the families continued organization provides to our tri-state community. This support and generosity reflects the community uninterrupted.” spirit of neighbor helping neighbor. On moving day, service to client families continued uninterrupted. The goal was to ensure that the clinical team members were available to do what they do best, that is, helping families care for their loved ones. The administrative and support teams ensured that the clinical team members could function efficiently in spite of the relocation activities. Congratulations to the Hospice of Dubuque staff, volunteers and moving crew in accomplishing this goal. In fact, four new families in need of hospice care were admitted on the day of the move! The Board of Directors, Staff and Volunteers look forward to the September 19, 2010 Open House when this outstanding facility will be presented to the community that helped make it possible. We look forward to the opportunity to say thank you to the community for its generous support of this project.

Hospice of Dubuque extends sincere thanks to Mystique Casino for receipt of a 2010 Dubuque Racing Association grant award, which totals $4,669. This grant, which was awarded in May 2010, will enable Hospice of Dubuque to provide community education programming so that tri-state residents are aware of the presence of Hospice of Dubuque and the wide array of services available through this community's nonprofit hospice. Since 2001, Mystique has provided over $85,000 of DRA grant funding to Hospice of Dubuque! Thank you.

“Congratulations

on the relocation of your program to a larger facility, which now includes a new education center and more office space for your employees. What a great example of “community” by pulling together resources in the donation of construction and supply costs by local businesses in your area. This is a true testament to the great service you provide in the tri-state area.” Don Schumacher, President, National Hospice & Palliative Care Organization

The delivery of hospice care Brian Sullivan, MD, Co-Medical Director The cornerstone of hospice care is palliative care. Palliative care is active total care of a patient whose disease is not responsive to curative treatment. Symptom control is the focus of the care. This includes managing symptoms that are physical, psychological, social, or spiritual in nature. The goal of palliative care is to achieve the best possible quality of life for patients and their loved ones. Many aspects of palliative care are applicable in the course of an illness before the patient qualifies for hospice care because symptom control is a component of medical care at all stages of life and illness. However, we call it palliative care when symptom management becomes the primary focus of the care. Palliative treatments are interventions that enhance comfort and improve the quality of a patient’s life. No specific therapy is excluded from consideration. The test of a palliative treatment lies in the agreement by the patient and the health care providers that the proposed treatment will provide relief from distressing symptoms and enhance quality of life. The decision to intervene with an active palliative treatment is based on the treatment’s ability to meet the stated goals rather than its expected effect on the underlying disease process.

Tree of Life Service Although the rainy weather forced the annual Tree of Life Memorial Service indoors, a large crowd gathered to honor those we love and will always remember. Dave Welter gave a moving witness on the loss of his wife, Lynne, and how faith and hope helped them throughout that journey. The members of the musical group, Tapestry, including Sue Kalb, Pat Niemer and Deb Stevens, as well as Hospice of Dubuque’s music therapist, Meganne Masko, provided touching music throughout the program. Those present also received a packet of forget-me-not seeds, courtesy of Ferry-Morse Seed Company as arranged by Theisen’s Home Farm Auto. Hospice of Dubuque is honored to host the Tree of Life Service for the tri-state area each year. Thank you to those who attended the event and the loyal supporters of the Tree of Life who together contributed over $25,000 to Hospice of Dubuque. A special thank you to Behr’s Funeral Home, the Tree of Life advertising sponsor, and to the members of the Knights of Columbus Counsil #510, for the use of their facility. The complete Tree of Life Memorial List can be found at www.hospiceofdubuque.org or is available at the Hospice of Dubuque office. Because of a number of inquiries following the Tree of Life Service, a CD of music from the group, Tapestry, is available at the Hospice of Dubuque office for $15. A portion of the sales will benefit Hospice of Dubuque.

Hospice care is provided by hospice programs that provide palliative care to terminally ill patients as well as providing supportive services to their loved ones. This care can be provided in one’s home as well as in institutional settings. Physical, social, spiritual and emotional care is provided by an interdisciplinary team throughout the course of hospice care, including during the dying process and during bereavement. It is easy to see that the delivery of hospice care is a complicated undertaking. Providing effective hospice care requires a collaborative effort involving the patient, family, physician and the hospice interdisciplinary team. Hospice of Dubuque has nearly three decades of experience working to provide the best possible hospice care for the terminally ill in our community.

The power of music Meganne Masko, Music Therapist My family and I recently returned from an overseas adventure in England where we did our best to absorb as much history and culture as possible in a two-week time span. One of our best days in London included a walk through Kensington Gardens, watching the guards at Buckingham Palace, finding our way to Trafalgar Square, viewing the amazing collection at the British Gallery and wandering into choir rehearsal at St. Martin-in-the-Fields. St. Martin-in-the-Fields is an over 500-year-old parish located in the heart of London. The church, deeply steeped in a tradition of generosity and mission, is also one of the finest centers of choral and orchestral music in Western Europe. The choir creates the kind of sound only possible when individuals are truly in tune with their environment and one another—when they both listen and are listened to. My family and I walked into the sanctuary just as the group was singing the final stanza of “Great is Thy Faithfulness,” a particular favorite of many of the patients with whom I work at Hospice of Dubuque. The sound reverberated through the space and washed over the gathered onlookers who could do nothing but sit in rapture at the magnificent music. It was in that moment that I was reminded of the power of music to comfort, strengthen, communicate and transform. And, in that moment, I thought of the many people who make possible the Music Therapy program for Hospice of Dubuque patients and their families. Thank you for your generosity and caring. The gift of music is a powerful one and only possible with your support. Hospice of Dubuque appreciates the welcoming gifts from our new neighbors, Big Apple Bagel, Cookin’ Something Up and James Martin Jewelers.

Thank you to Bob and Frances Brunkan for the donation of books and pamphlets for our lending library.

Patient care without interruption Bonnie Hancock, Patient Care Director May 14, 2010, was a normally busy Friday for all Hospice of Dubuque clinical staff. The patient census was over 120 with four new admissions planned. Clinical staff had been instructed to pack a crate with their phone and desk supplies. The plan was for each clinical person to begin their day from home, see their patients and return to the new office later in the day. As patients were seen, and taken care of, one office was dismantled and a new office was quickly established. Business telephone access was limited for less than 10 minutes. Computers in the patient care area were functional within two hours. The speed with which medical records, cabinets, chairs and desks were transplanted by movers and volunteers was truly amazing. Visits were made and patients were attended to unaware of this coordinated event. Clinical staff came to 1670 JFK Road, plugged in their phones, organized their work spaces and smiled at a good days work well done.

Thanks to Jeff and everyone who participated by helping to raise over $2,300 for Hospice of Dubuque.

Capital Campaign

Hospice of Dubuque Executive Director, Barbara Zoeller, gratefully accepts a check in the amount of $20,000 from Sande Peters for the Building for Compassion campaign. The donation was received as the result of a grant from the Andersen Corporate Foundation and Eagle Window & Door, Inc. We thank them for their generosity in supporting our project.

McGraw-Hill employees, Chris Schiesl and Julie Aird, recently shared their time and gardening talents with Hospice of Dubuque as they planted several beautiful potted plants around the building. This gift was made possible by the Community Partners Beautification Matching Gift Program. Thank you to McGraw Hill, and their employees, for participating in and facilitating this grant.

Check out Hospice of Dubuque’s new sign on JFK Road, which was recently landscaped courtesy of Sara Carpenter and Steve’s Ace Hardware.

Education program scheduled for this fall Through the generosity of the Jim Theisen Family, Hospice of Dubuque was able to add the Theisen Education Center to the new offices at 1670 JFK Road. This educational facility was designed to provide end-of-life care education for the entire tri-state community. In conjunction with National Hospice Month, throughout the month of November, Hospice of Dubuque will initiate educational workshops related to end-of-life issues. Each workshop will be an hour long. The four programs will provide information on hospice care, being a caregiver, advance directives and dealing with grief during the holidays. The goal of these workshops is to promote awareness for the end-of-life support and programs that are available to tri-state area families from Hospice of Dubuque. The entire community is invited to all, or any, of the workshops. The Hospice of Dubuque website will be updated as information becomes available. Please check out www.hospiceofdubuque.org for more details.

September 23, 2010 Maintain Your Brain Margie Meehan, Community Relations Coordinator, Dubuque Alzheimer’s Association, will discuss the growing evidence that lifestyle can affect your brain health and risk for dementia.

What is the role of the volunteer? Hospice volunteers serve in a variety of roles. In a home setting the volunteer can stay for a period of time offering companionship to the patient while allowing the caregiver an opportunity to run errands, go to an appointment or rest. In a nursing home setting the volunteer can visit, read, pray, take the patient outside or accompany the patient to an activity. Volunteers can also take a patient on errands, to appointments or for a ride to see the river, the park or colorful fall leaves. Volunteers are men women who have chosen to devote a portion of their time to assisting patients and families receiving hospice care. In the photo below, Hospice of Dubuque Volunteer, Barb, assists her patient with checking email and writing correspondence.

October 28, 2010 Compliance Review, HIPAA and OSHA Update Judi Carr, RN, Hospice of Dubuque Program Development Coordinator, will review our compliance program and HIPAA. The yearly OSHA in-service will also be provided. This is a mandatory meeting.

“Hospice of Dubuque was just terrific. They came to see us in record time and were very thorough and compassionate. They took time and interest in our grandmother’s condition. We are just sorry we did not call sooner for her pain control.” Judy L.
