The main goal of the workshop was to understand and practice the basics of graphic research. Our task concentrated on creating editorial illustrations for a magazine issue devoted to Valentine’s Day. The cover story was a survey and analysis of the state of love. Each student was to choose one topic from: overview of love, first love, historical love, weddings, sensual love, erotic love, computer love, adultery, divorce. After individual research on the chosen theme, we explored our ideas graphically and finalised the illustrations. Yadzia Williams supervised our efforts and made sure we followed the right track within the direction we chose. Everyone’s intensive work proved fruitful, as the outcomes of the assessment are impressive and present a wide diversity of ideas, techniques and interpretation of topics.

The workshop entitled “Mandala – the world of graphic design in common use” aimed at discussing the visual communication and the contemporary phenomena and challenges in graphic design from the perspectives of young aspiring designers. We were asked to create a “mandala”, a spherelike graphic presentation of our notions of the world of graphic design. Like with every project, we started with individual research, in order to find what graphic design signified for each of us. After that, we began to develop our ideas, think of the techniques we wished to use and ordering the mandala sequence. This may have been one of the most individual workshops, because traditionally mandala-making process aims at concentrating on the inner voice. Therefore, to perform the task well, we all needed to find our true understanding of graphic design.

The workshop entitled “Type design from serif to sans” was organised to teach us the basics in typography and typeface design. Before any practical exercises, there was a thorough explanation of the important aspects of designing a typeface. We were then asked to operate with a tool consisting of two pencils connected with an elastic band. Martin Majoor closely supervised our first steps in designing letters, starting with an “n”, and followed by other letters, each with a bit more ease. With his attentive eye kept on our work, each of us managed to create in their own typeface a word “pigsnake”, made up specifically for the purpose of this workshop. At the end, we all presented the word in a serif and a sans serif typeface. Some of us even managed to recreate the designed typeface digitally. Martin Majoor taught us not only the letter design, but also the appropriate letter spacing and basic rules in typography.

Sounds of Warsaw Interactive instalations

This was by all means the most technically advanced of all workshops. At the beginning some of us had difficulties finding out way in the intricacy of the mysterious Arduino device which, when properly connected to the computer, enables transforming touch into sound or image. The main topic of the project was “Sounds of Warsaw”; by using interactive drawing based on conductive ink as well as conductive tape and thread, we were to prepare advertisement of a new music festival entitled “Savages” coming to Warsaw, investigating into the relationship between sound and image. Due to the complexity of the task, we were advised to work in groups. We were given all the necessary information and tools and, with the guidance of Adam Cooke, each group worked on their interactive project.

The team thought of a project that was aimed at being installed on Warsaw metro train. It was constructed as a central metal pipe used for passengers to hold on to it. Whenever someone would touch it, it would emit sounds such as bird tweeting or bongo drum playing.

The project prototype was meant for installation as handles on a bus. When pulled down, the handles were emitting sounds with jungle connotations. The audience was able to pull more than one handle at a time, which would create the hustle and bustle of an urban jungle.

Narrative sequence “Being Human”

This workshop aimed at exploring narrative and sequencing, and it was linked to a narrative competition set every year in Britain. We first needed to research the topic “Being human”, develop a concept and write a short narrative. This project was about image-making; we were free to choose how to create the images and what media to use. Thanks to this workshop, each of us had a chance to learn how to graphically express a sequence of messages, as well as to work with images and text. The outcomes were impressive, as most of us managed to finish their graphical narrative within the short deadline. Moreover, the projects were very diverse in ideas, techniques and perception of the subject “Being human”.
