Season Outlook / Schedule With talented depth, Warriors get set to make a run for CCAA title

By Chuun Sun The Turlock Journal (Nov. 19) When Cal State Stanislaus women’s basketball coach Sharon Turner looks down her bench this season, she’s not going to find herself scratching her head wondering who to alternate in. That’s because she’ll have plenty of choices. The Warriors not only have four returning senior starters in forward/center Katie Busi and guards Christin Gowan, Jeanette Rowe and Andreanna Marshall, but they also picked up some depth during the offseason. Turner, who will be in her ninth season at the helm, says she has at least 10 players that could be part of the rotation. “Everyone brings something to the team,” said Busi, the school’s career leader in blocked-shots. The Warriors opened against 18th ranked Wayne State (Neb.) on Nov. 12 and another nonconference home game against Cal Maritime on Nov. 20, before starting California Collegiate Athletic Association play at Chico State on Nov. 27. Stanislaus suffered a harsh 72-49 nonconference home opener loss to Wayne State, a program that is coming off an NCAA Tournament appearance. The Warriors don’t look at the defeat as a setback, as it was the first game of the season. Plus, they had a productive offseason in which the senior class came back, as Turner said, “in unbelievably good shape.” One of them is Busi, a two-time allconference center who will once again be the centerpiece of the Warriors offense. Busi is coming off another superb season, en route

Head Coach SHARON TURNER Head Coach

Sharon Turner is now in her ninth season at the helm of the Warriors women’s basketball program. Turner took over as the head coach in May of 2002 and led the Warriors to the NCAA Division II Postseason Tournament for the first time in 12 years. Behind the leadership of two two-time All-Americans Shannon Donnelly and Aprile Powell, the Warriors finished tied for second in the California Collegiate Athletic Association with an 18-10 overall mark and 15-7 in conference play in 2002-03. That mark is the program’s highest finish since joining the CCAA in 1998. Last year, the Warriors finished tied for seventh in the CCAA but missed out on the conference tournament due to tiebreaker procedures. They finished with a five-game winning streak and ended the season with two thrilling overtime victories on the road to finish the year 10-16 overall and 9-13 in conference play. The nine-win conference season was the team’s best since 2002-03, Turner’s first year. In 2008-09, Turner’s team enjoyed its best season in six years, going 13-15 overall and 8-12 in conference play. The team qualified for the CCAA conference tournament for the first time after finishing tied for sixth in conference play. Prior to coming to Cal State Stanislaus, Turner was the Associate Head Coach at Cal Poly Pomona for three seasons. During Turner’s three-year tenure at Cal Poly Pomona, the Broncos won the CCAA championship three times. In addition, the Broncos won back-to-back NCAA Division II regional and national championships in 2001 and 2002. As the associate head coach at Pomona, Turner served as the recruiting and academic coordinator and worked with the Bronco post players. She also organized summer camps and clinics. During her time at Cal Poly Pomona, the Broncos compiled an overall record of 55-7, had two post players receive all-CCAA and All-American awards, one being named the NCAA Division II National Player of the Year, and both were named the Most Valuable Player of the Elite Eight. Turner has coached for more than 20 years at the college and high school levels. Turner served as the recruiting coordinator at Long Beach State and spent time at her alma mater, San Jose State, as an assistant coach. She also helped start the program at Cal State Monterey Bay. As a player, Turner played the off-guard and power forward positions at San Jose State, where she finished her collegiate career among the Spartan leaders in scoring, rebounding, blocked shots and free-throw percentage. After her playing career at San Jose State concluded, Turner coached at Mira Loma and Rio Americano High Schools in Sacramento. She has a bachelor’s degree in psychology with a minor in Afro-American Studies from San Jose State. Turner is currently a bible college student working towards a doctorate degree in Biblical Studies and Pastorial Counseling at Dominion Bible Institute and Seminary. In addition, she serves as the faculty advisor for Fellowship of Christian Athletes at CSU Stanislaus. Turner and son Allen, 13, live in Modesto.

Tirado We have joined institutions across 22 conferences and independents in committing to safe, fun, and entertaining sporting experiences on Division II campuses. We have signed the pledge to create and continue family-friendly experiences for everyone.

NCAA Division II presidents and chancellors affirm that athletics events should reflect the values of higher education and the mission of each institution. The California Collegiate Athletic Association has been the nation’s most successful intercollegiate athletic conferences since its establishment in December 1938. The 12-member league is home to some of the nation’s finest NCAA Division II athletic programs in Cal Poly Pomona, Cal State Dominguez Hills, Cal State L.A., Cal State San Bernardino, Cal State Stanislaus, Chico State, CSU, Monterey Bay, Humboldt State, UC San Diego, San Francisco State and Sonoma State. Cal State Bakersfield ended its long stint as a member of the conference this past year after reclassifying to to Division I. CCAA institutions compete in seven women’s and six men’s conference-sponsored sports. Fall sports include men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s soccer and women’s volleyball. Men’s and women’s basketball are contested in the winter, and women’s tennis, men’s golf, men’s and women’s outdoor track & field, softball and baseball comprise spring competition. CCAA members have won 149 NCAA Championships (98 men, 49 women) all time, far and away the most of any Division II conference.

CCAA institutions have been very successful in the history of NCAA women’s athletics, having won 10 cross country, 10 softball, six track & field, five volleyball and five basketball national championships as well as 18 more in four other sports. The CCAA has undergone several changes in conference membership since charter members UC Santa Barbara, Fresno State, San Diego State and San Jose State came together to form the league in 1938. Over the past 60 years, a number of institutions have been members of the CCAA, including Cal State Northridge, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, Chapman, Cal State Fullerton, Long Beach State, Pacific, Pepperdine , UC Riverside, UC Davis and Grand Canyon University. The CCAA Commissioner’s Office relocated from southern California to the San Francisco Bay Area-suburb of Walnut Creek in July 1998. Robert J. Hiegert is in his 14th year as the Commissioner.

This is Cal State Stanislaus Location. Location. Location.

Situated in a park-like setting that is unique in the CSU system, new students are immediately drawn to CSU Stanislaus by its tranquil and picturesque environment — the perfect backdrop for focused, serious study. We have 228 acres of lawns, bridges, waterfalls, and ponds that will make students feel as though they are walking through a private park on their way to class. Our campus is considered one of the most beautiful—and safest—public campuses in all of California, where nature coexists in harmony with the pleasing architectural style of our buildings. Looking beyond the natural beauty, students find modern computer and research labs, a technologically enhanced library, and our latest addition, the Nora and Hashem Naraghi Hall of Science.

This is Cal State Stanislaus Student Life

There’s more to college than attending class, studying, or bubbling in answers on Scantron forms. At CSU Stanislaus , people experience a campus culture that fosters strong relationships between students, faculty, and administrators. Students make lifelong friends with their classmates, association and club members, fraternity brothers, and sorority sisters. Students become part of a vibrant campus life, where activities are plentiful. With close to 100 active student organizations and more than 9,000 potential friends at CSU Stanislaus, there is a niche for everyone.

Call us home

For many, living on campus is part of the college experience. Strong bonds and lifelong friendships are created through the shared experience of campus life. For campus residents, there are no hassles with transportation or parking, and classrooms and other facilities are just steps away from where our students live. The Village at CSU Stanislaus is decidedly not a typical dorm. With the choice of spacious single, double, or triple occupancy suites or single-occupancy apartments, students can pick the one that’s right for them. Privacy, yes, but Village life is anything but dull; with dozens of organized activities — from mixers to dances — students can be as involved as they want to be. The Village boasts two swimming pools, a spa, a total of seven coinless laundry facilities, a computer lab, a study hall, recreation room, sport courts, fitness center, and a new dining hall complete with an outdoor patio.

International Education

CSU Stanislaus students can take an internship in France, visit Malta, apply for a scholarship to China, or spend a summer in Prague. As an example, in a single semester, CSU Stanislaus students were recently studying in Spain, Israel, France, Canada, Australia, and Wales. Best of all, financial aid applies, so students can take courses for the same low fee AND study abroad! CSU Stanislaus was recently selected as one of eight national institutions for the Global Learning for All Program, which means that international/global education is integrated into coursework as an active component.

Faculty facts

CSU Stanislaus employs more than 450 full-time and part-time instructors who have a passion for helping students. The University boasts a low 19 to 1 student-to-teacher ratio. More than 80 percent of faculty hold doctorates, or an equivalent degree in their fields.

Financial Aid

We don’t let money stand in the way of a college education. Recently named one of America’s Best Value Colleges, CSU Stanislaus offers a top-quality education at an affordable price. Our students graduate with a debt load substantially below the national average, thanks, in part, to more than $35 million in financial aid awarded to students annually, with nearly $1 million of that from scholarships.

Internships

Experience gained from internships and fellowships offered at CSU Stanislaus often gives students the advantage in landing that crucial first job on their way to a lifelong career. Leading local, regional, and national companies, businesses, school districts, hospitals, social and government agencies proudly employ CSU Stanislaus graduates. And many of them began their careers as interns.

President ’s Message 2010-11 President’s Message DR. HAMID SHIRVANI University President California State University Stanislaus Welcome to California State University, Stanislaus and Warrior Athletics. I am so proud of all of our sports teams and student-athletes. Their success on the field and in the classroom has contributed to the University’s reputation for excellence and its Princeton Review ranking. CSU Stanislaus is the only CSU campus listed among Princeton Review’s “Best 373 Colleges” in the United States. Warrior fans also deserve applause for turning out in increasingly strong numbers. The new 24-acre Student Recreation Complex has helped attract fans to some great home games. Soccer alone had the strongest average attendance among Division II schools last year. Cheered on by loyal fans, the men’s soccer team tied a school record with 11 victories and Victor Regalado became the University’s first All-American in men’s soccer. Three other student-athletes were also declared All-American. Pole vaulter Annie Burlingham made the first-team selection in women’s pole vault. Golfers Brandon Taylor and Trevor Blair earned All-American status as they led the Warriors to another National Championship appearance. Two of our coaches were honored by their peers as they were named CCAA Coach of the Year: John Cook of Men’s Golf and Verek Visaraga of Women’s Tennis. Warrior athletes once again demonstrated that their ability to succeed is not limited to the field. Thirty-one CSU Stanislaus student athletes had GPAs of 3.4 or higher, which is one of the strongest academic showings in the CCAA. The spotlight on CSU Stanislaus athletics is only getting brighter as the University will host three major championship events this academic year. We will host the NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field National Championships in May, 2011. Two CCAA conference tournaments will be held on campus. The Men’s & Women’s Soccer Championships will be held in November, 2010. The CCAA Track & Field Championships will be held in May, 2011. The academic and athletic achievements of CSU Stanislaus’ student athletes are to be commended. I encourage you to show your support for these fine athletes by becoming an enthusiastic fan and supporter of our outstanding teams. Go Warriors!

Academic Advising & Support Student-Athlete Academic Advising Program The number one goal for the Intercollegiate Athletics program at California State University Stanislaus is that our student-athletes graduate at a higher rate than the general student body. To achieve this goal coaches at Cal State Stanislaus only recruit student-athletes deemed admissible by the Director of Admissions who show promise for academic and athletic achievement. In the fall of 2006, under the direction of Vice President for Student Affairs Stacey Morgan-Foster and Director of Athletics Dr. Milton Richards, an Academic Advisor for student-athletes was recruited and a program to assist student-athletes in obtaining their college degree was established. Under the leadership of the Senior Director of Retention and Advising Lee Renner, Academic Advisor Amye Leon provides a comprehensive academic advising program for all student-athletes. Her program includes personal one on one advising, a supervised athletic study hall program, determination and monitoring of student-athlete NCAA and CCAA academic eligibility and most importantly, direct interaction with campus faculty on behalf of coaches, student-athletes and campus staff to assist all student-athletes in their pursuit of a college degree. AMYE LEON Success in the classroom for student-athletes is a top priority for Warrior Athletics. Our department consisAcademic Advisor tently earns a 3.0 cumulative grade point average. Warrior student-athletes also achieve NCAA and CCAA Academic All American Awards, with 35 earning Academic All-CCAA honors in 2006-07, 52 in 2007-08, and 47 in 2008-09. Student athletes are strongly encouraged to visit both the Athletic Advisor and their chosen major department advisor/faculty each semester before registering for classes. The Advising Resource Center is located in Mary Stuart Rogers (MSR) 180, and appointments can be made by calling (209) 667-3304. Leon Graduated from California State University, Fresno with a B.A. in Psychology in 2001, obtained her M.A. in Educational Counseling and Student Services in 2002, and is currently enrolled as part of the first cohort of the Ed.D. program at CSU Stanislaus.

First-YEAR EXPERIENCE (F.Y.E.)

TUTORING AND STUDY HALL

A Special program for first semester freshmen

Academic tutoring is available through the Tutoring Center on campus. The Student-Athlete Academic Advisor will also establish a regular study hall program for all student-athletes. The Student-Athlete Academic Advisor is available to monitor the progress of each student-athlete and to ensure his/her academic success. The Tutoring Center is available on a “drop-in” basis with peer tutors in specific subject areas. Student-athletes can make an appointment with a specific tutor to address a specific academic challenge that they face. Any student-athlete with a learning disability can receive assistance by utilizing the resources available at the CSU Stanislaus Counseling Center and Testing Services. All resources available at the counseling and testing centers are designed to assist all students with learning disabilities and to provide the appropriate tools or techniques to address the disability to assure success at the college level. The Athletic Advisor, departmental academic advisor or team head coach will assist you in utilizing these services in a confidential manner. The Athletics Department Student-Athlete Study Hall Program has been established to assist at-risk studentathletes to utilize appropriate study habits and time management skills to succeed in the classroom.

Research shows that students who are part of a learning community and a FYE program do better in their classes, are more active on campus, make friends more easily, and get to know faculty more personally than students who do not join such a program. The FYE program provides these benefits for you. In the First Year Experience Program, you have the opportunity to join a learning community with other new students. The classes in the learning community are integrated around an interesting theme and linked to a seminar that will prepare you to be successful in your classes and will encourage you to get involved on campus. ED & BERTHA FITZPATRICK ARENA Ed & Bertha Fitzpatrick Arena The arena on the campus of California State University Stanislaus is home to the Warriors’ men’s and women’s basketball teams, the women’s volleyball team, department of Intercollegiate Athletics, as well as the Department of Kinesiology. On the first day of basketball practices for the 2010-11 season, new letters were installed on the building, renaming the gym to Ed & Bertha Fitzpatrick Arena. The arena was renamed for Ed and Bertha Fitzpatrick, owners of Valley Lexus/Valley BMW in Modesto and other car dealerships in the Bay Area. The Fitzpatricks contributed $500,000 to the University in 2009. As a result, the California State University Board of Trustees has approved, at the recommendation of University President Ham Shirvani, that the campus’ Warrior Arena be renamed the Ed & Bertha Fitzpatrick Arena. In 1999, the gymnasium took on the name Warrior Arena, 21 years after it was built on the east side of the campus. Fitzpatrick Arena has become one of the toughest places to play in the conference and is noted for its atmosphere and vocal fan support. Also in the Fall of 2009, the walk-way leading up to the Arena was named Hanny Way, in honor of Jim Hanny, who had been involved with CSU Stanislaus athletics since 1966. In 42 years of service at CSU Stanislaus, Hanny has served as the athletics director, chairman of physical education, coached basketball, golf, track & field, cross country and baseball. Hanny led the Warriors to 12 national championships and is a member of five different Athletics Halls of Fame. Adjacent to the Field House, which is home to physical education professors’ offices and the Warrior Fitness Center, is a full-size swimming pool. SRC & Athletics Facilities The Student Recreation Complex at California State University Stanislaus opened in August of 2009 prior to the start of the soccer season after students overwhelmingly approved a referendum to fund the construction of a student recreation complex in the spring of 2007. The complex, located on the east side of campus at the corner of Geer Road and Christoffersen Parkway, features a 19,000-square-foot fitness center, a 2,100-seat lighted soccer/football stadium (Warrior Stadium) with a state-of-the-art all-weather turf and track (Al Brenda Track), a lighted intramural competition field and a soccer practice field. A field events site for the relocated track and field program is also included in the project. The Associated Students, Inc., University Student Union Board of Directors and Student Athletic Advisory Committee leadership were involved in the planning for the project. A student oversight committee provided a voice in operation of the facilities. The addition of a lighted intramural field provides CSU Stanislaus with its first dedicated facility for that program. Participation in intramurals has increased dramatically with the University’s steady enrollment growth and improved student-generated recreation programs. In its first year, Warrior Stadium hosted the California Collegiate Athletic Association Men’s & Women’s Soccer Championships. The facility is schedule to host three major championships in 2010-11: the CCAA Men’s Warrior Stadium & Women’s Soccer Championships, CCAA Track & Field Championships and & AL Brenda Track the NCAA Division II Track & Field National Championships. During its inaugural soccer season, Warrior Stadium is the site of new attendance records for the Cal State Stanislaus men’s and women’s soccer programs. Both teams set new conference and school records in single-game and single-season attendance figures. The Warriors also led all of NCAA Division II in single-game attendance. The track & field program hosted five meets on the Al Brenda Track, including the first Kim Duyst Invitational and the annual Brenda Athletic Clubs High School Invitational. In the same vicinity on the east side of the campus, the athletic facilities also include a baseball field, two softball fields and six tennis courts.

Warrior Athletics Club The mission of the California State University Stanislaus Warrior Athletics Club is to assist Warrior Athletics coaches and staff in generating external funds for scholarships, capital projects, endowments and other needs as prioritized by the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics. The Warrior Athletics Club is the fundraising arm of the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics at CSU Stanislaus. Annual donors to the Warrior Athletics Club become club members and are entitled to member benefits based on the amount of their donation. The Warrior Athletics Club is supported by businesses and individuals, and provides funds on an annual basis for athletic scholarships and operational activities such as travel and equipment to more than 250 male and female student-athletes at CSU Stanislaus. The Warrior Athletics Club is administered by the CSU Stanislaus Foundation, which is recognized by the Internal Revenue Service as a 501(c) charitable organization. Therefore, Warrior Athletics Club members receive IRS charitable donation credit based on the amount of their donation less fair market value for benefits received.

2010-11 CAL STATE STANISLAUS WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Welcome! As Mayor of the City of Turlock, it is my distinct honor to welcome you to the campus of California State University Stanislaus for today’s home game. Cal State Stanislaus continues to set the bar for excellence in academics and athletics. For nearly fifty years Warrior Athletics has brought great pride to the City of Turlock, Cal State Stanislaus and the Central Valley. President Shirvani, the Turlock Chamber of Commerce/ Convention and Visitors Bureau, City Council and I have been working hard to enhance the relationship between the City of Turlock and California State University Stanislaus. Warrior Athletics is a key part of our strategy to make Turlock a true college town. As a graduate of Cal State Stanislaus (1981), I thank you on behalf of our student-athletes, coaches, administrative staff, alumni and friends of the University for attending today’s home contest. By purchasing a ticket to a home contest or special event and by joining the Warrior Athletic Club through a tax deductible donation to Warrior Athletics you are helping us provide the necessary additional financial resources to allow our student-athletes to succeed in the class room, court, field, diamond and track. On behalf of our three student-athletes coaches and staff I want again personally thank you for your support of Cal State Stanislaus.
