DW Drums offers tours of its world-renowned facility and showroom on Thursdays by appointment. I’d follow that up with dinner at Tierra Sur at Herzog Wine Cellars for an upscale experience. A perfect day for me!

On warm summer days, my favorite spot is at the newly remodeled Zachari Dunes on Mandalay Beach. I rent a bike from Wheel Fun Rentals and cruise along the ocean, then end the day at Float Spa.

My perfect day starts with exploring the Channel Islands Harbor on kayaks from Channel Islands Kayak Center. Then, a delicious lunch at The Shores and catching the sunset while strolling Oxnard Beach Park with my pup.

I love a day that starts with breakfast at Honeycup Coffee & Creamery at Channel Islands Harbor before sailing off to Anacapa Island with Island Packers. Back in Oxnard, I’d end the day with dinner at Waterside Restaurant & Wine Bar.

I love starting my day at Cafe Dolce Vita with a latte de olla, before cruising to my favorite Oxnard landmark, Heritage Square– home to historic Victorian-era architecture and my favorite dinner spot, The 1901.

The Oxnard Taco Trail makes for a fun day: I’d start at Tacos La Bonita with quesabirria tacos consome (it’s seriously unreal!) and end the day at the beach watching the sun set over the ocean with crispy fish tacos to-go from Otani’s Seafood.

Welcome to Oxnard, where the city meets the shore, and the ocean breeze beckons you to explore. It’s been an exciting year for our beautiful city by the sea. Oxnard Beach Park—soon to be renamed 'olol'koy after the Chumash word for “dolphin”— was recognized as the #1 Best Beach on the West Coast in the USA TODAY 10Best Readers’ Choice Awards. Our new (and delicious) Oxnard Taco Trail has been receiving rave reviews and national recognition. Anacapa Island, a quick boat ride out of Oxnard’s Channel Islands Harbor, reopened to visitors with a refurbished landing dock. And the newly renovated Zachari Dunes on Mandalay Beach is open for business, welcoming guests to its spacious, oceanfront suites. We invite you to discover the hidden gems of our vibrant city, nestled on the iconic California coastline where Highway 1 meets Highway 101. We’re a convenient, direct stop on Amtrak’s Pacific Surfliner and Coast Starlight—those

arriving by train will be welcomed by a colorful new mural at the Oxnard Transit Center—as well as Amtrak San Joaquin’s Bus Route 10. Soak in our diverse culture and rich history, try our delicious food and drink, explore the great outdoors and enjoy our warm hospitality. From taking in the historic Victorian architecture in Heritage Square, to riding in an authentic Venetian gondola at Seabridge Marina, to marveling at the Channel Islands Maritime Museum and Mystic Whaler tall ship in the Channel Islands Harbor, Oxnard truly offers something for everyone. We welcome you with open arms.

1

KEEP THE BEAT One of the world’s biggest drum manufacturers calls Oxnard home. DW Drums have been played by some of the music industry’s best drummers—like Ron Tutt (Elvis Presley), Mitch Mitchell (The Jimi Hendrix Experience), Tommy Lee (Mötley Crüe), Travis Barker (Blink-182) and Don Henley (The Eagles). Not a rock star? No problem. You can still take a factory tour on Thursdays at 2 p.m. (reservations required).

2

Oxnard, AKA “Boxnard,” is a hub for boxing. The city is home to champions like Graciela Casillas (retired) and Hugo Centeno Jr., one of the top middleweight fighters in the world. Aspiring champs move to Oxnard from around the globe to train with the city’s topranked instructors at some of the best gyms around.

Every November, Oxnard’s largest Day of the Dead celebration is held at the Oxnard Performing Arts and Convention Center. It’s a colorful celebration of life and legacy, with altars and ofrendas, traditional dance and music, artisans, authentic Mexican food and drinks and family-friendly activities.

TOUCHDOWN! Every summer, the Dallas Cowboys come to Oxnard’s River Ridge Playing Fields for pre-season training. Most practices are open to the public, giving fans a closer look at one of the NFL’s most storied franchises. Special events include Dallas Cowboys cheerleader meet-and-greets, mascot appearances, live music and more.

LAUGH OUT LOUD

5

You don’t have to travel to LA to see A-list comedians like Pete Davidson, Amy Schumer and Craig Robinson. Just book tickets to a show at Levity Live Comedy Club in The Collection at RiverPark, where lots of famous names come to practice new material and test out jokes. (LOLs practically guaranteed!)

PEAK ARRIVAL

I have a 1983 Chevrolet Monte Carlo that my dad, Raul Segura, and I built together along with help from members of the All For One car club. The lowrider scene in Oxnard is special because there is a rich, deep history of low riding, car clubs and custom car culture in general in this city. This is not something that happened overnight.

Sure, you can drive here (Oxnard is easily accessible via Highway 101). But we suggest arriving via Amtrak Pacific Surfliner into the centrally located Oxnard Transit Center. Hop off the train, grab a latte from Cafe Dolce Vita, take a selfie in front of the colorful murals along the Center’s walls and then stroll to downtown’s Plaza Park. You’re here!

BEST BEACHES It’s official: Oxnard is home to the best beach on the West Coast. In June 2023, 10Best.com readers voted Oxnard Beach Park into the top spot, thanks to its grassy rolling dunes and pristine, undeveloped coastline. Turn to page 46 for more on Oxnard’s beaches.

8

CAR CULTURE Gearheads, unite! Oxnard’s car culture is the real deal. There are dozens of car shows, cruise nights, meet-ups and even museums for auto enthusiasts of all kinds. Take a spin around the Mullin Automotive Museum to see historic French cars from Bugatti to Voisin plus Grand Prix winners.

9

HOLLYWOOD NORTH Only 60 miles north of LA, Oxnard’s coast has drawn filmmakers for decades. In the 1920s, Oxnard Beach was known as “Hollywood by the Sea” because so many movies were filmed here. (Clark Gable and Greta Garbo were regularly spotted!) Fast forward to more recent history: Big productions filmed here include Clueless, Back to the Future Part III and Captain Marvel.

10

STRAWBERRY FIELDS FOREVER California grows 90% of the country’s strawberries—and Oxnard produces one-third of this juicy red fruit. More than 6,300 acres of strawberries grow here annually. We Are Family! From friendly competition to kidapproved eats, there is plenty of family fun to be found in Oxnard.

Morning

My family’s favorite discoveries are the seaside Channel Islands Farmers Market— my family loves the street corn and the live music—and the sea lions at play near Kiddie Beach. It continues to amaze me that these beautiful beaches are so accessible and not crowded.

There’s no better way to start the day than with pancakes. Order a stack at downtown’s family-owned BG’s Cafe. Walk off breakfast at Heritage Square, which showcases 100-year-old Victorians in a well-preserved, single downtown block (see p. 24), or brush up on your history at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in nearby Simi Valley.

Or, travel back to the 19th century on the Mystic Whaler, a tall ship replica. Public sails and deck tours are offered select weekends. Prefer your sea adventures on land? Downtown is where you’ll find most of the Taco Trail restaurants (turn to page 56 for more).

B

uilt in 1898 by the Oxnard brothers (Henry, James, Robert and Benjamin), the massive red brick American Beet Sugar Factory helped put the small coastal town of Oxnard on the map. Alas, all that remains is a historic marker north of Wooley Road and east of Oxnard Boulevard. But other structures from the city’s rich past can be explored on a self-guided walking tour of downtown.

Heritage Square A leisurely stroll around this block of restored Victorian houses reveals what life in the 19th century must have been like. (Many of these were the homes of Oxnard’s early pioneer families.) Brick walkways

connect the structures, with pretty landscaping and rose gardens surrounding the main plaza. Highlights include the green Petit House, the Perkins Pump House and the Italianate architecture details of the 1877 Pfeiler Ranch House. Today, they’re home to local businesses, including Rancho Ventavo Cellars and The 1901, a restaurant where you can enjoy dinner and then head downstairs to The 1901 Speakeasy for loungey vibes, craft cocktails and bar bites. (Try the smoked brisket sliders!)

Oxnard Historic District A few minutes northwest of Heritage Square, between F and G streets, lies the 80-acre Oxnard Historic District. Stroll

past more than 100 historic homes in a variety of styles from Craftsman to Spanish Colonial. Each December, this district turns into a bona-fide Hallmark Christmas special as houses transform into festive displays of holiday cheer.

Honorable Mentions Stroll Plaza Park to see the 1910 Oxnard Pagoda, one of California’s last remaining band pavilions. Today, it’s a community gathering spot for festivals and events. Down the street, check out the throwback facades of the Vogue Theater (1950s art deco) and the 1929 Teatro building. #DYK: Bob Dylan and Willie Nelson recorded albums at this former movie palace turned recording studio.

I have lived in Oxnard all of my life. I remember field trips to Carnegie Museum. We would check out books and then head to Plaza Park for lunch. And there was an old jet plane in Colonia Park that we would climb on for hours! I have witnessed Oxnard change from a rural farm community to a beautiful mid-size city with a small-town feeling.

Kolaan Busbice Head Brewer, Wagon Wheel Brewing Company Any brewer will tell you that science plays a huge role in making beer. Not every brewer, however, has a biology degree. Wagon Wheel Brewing Co.’s Kolaan Busbice started home brewing while studying at Sonoma State University and merged his two passions by observing yeast organisms in beer brewing at his department’s microbiology lab. The rest is history, as he parlayed that into a career, starting in Sonoma County’s thriving craft brewing industry and eventually moving to Southern California, where he worked at Duckfoot and Modern Times breweries. He then came home to Ventura County and Wagon Wheel, where he crafts creative but accessible beers to complement the kitchen’s updated take on Mexican and classic American fare. Busbice recreates some of his favorite sips from around the world: a sparkly, champagne-like Belgian OX Saison, for example, and his light-but-bright San Diego–style Pintail Pale Ale. Whatever he’s brewing, Busbice has never forgotten the lessons he learned in college. “I still use a few equations from chemistry,” he says. wagonwheelbrewingcompany.com

David Galzignato Director of Winemaking and Operations, Herzog Wine Cellars To work for Herzog Wine Cellars is to step back in history. The 150-year-old, ninth-generation Jewish family owned winery rose to prominence when patriarch Philip Herzog produced wine for the royal court of the Austro-Hungarian empire. (He was declared a Baron for his efforts.) Forced to flee during the turmoil of post-World War II eastern Europe, the family emigrated to New York City, where it rebuilt the family business into the largest producer of kosher wine in America. Subsequent generations moved operations to California, eventually establishing a state-of-the-art winery in Oxnard in 2005. David Galzignato pays homage to this extraordinary lineage while keeping the company firmly in tune with the latest industry trends. He oversees the winery’s affordable “large lot” production, a staple at weddings, bar mitzvahs and family events around the world, while also managing Herzog’s expanding selection of “small lot” boutique and organic wines. The secret, he says, is no different from what made “Baron” Herzog a success: strict attention to farming and extracting the finest expression out of every grape grown. “It is a heritage of excellence that has defined the Herzog wine making tradition, nine generations in the making.” herzogwine.com

Day trips are great, but an overnight stay at Channel Islands National Park reveals even more of its off-the-grid charms. Here is one backpacker's adventure.

fter an hour-long boat ride across the Santa Barbara Channel, we disembark at Santa Cruz Island and clamber up the gangplank to our welcome committee: two park rangers and one opinionated raven. Sitting on the dock’s railing, the behemoth of a bird caws as we shoulder our backpacks, its guttural sound reverberating through the air. Day trippers mosey by as those who are overnighting gather around the rangers for a camping rundown. “Welcome to the Channel Islands,” one ranger says. “I hope you brought everything you need. You’re on your own out here.” There are no stores or parking lots, nor any lines of people waiting their turn to get that photo at a popular viewpoint. We are on our own, and the silence—undercut by the raven’s occasional diatribe and the lapping of waves—is glorious. This remoteness is the reason I am on Santa Cruz Island, one of five islands that make up Channel Islands National Park. I’m only 20 miles from Oxnard, but out here, surrounded by sprawling, unadulterated beauty, I am a world away. I arrive via Islands Packers ferry—a 38 VisitOxnard.com

far cry from the tomols, or wooden canoes, that the native Chumash people once used to cross the channel. For thousands of years, the Chumash thrived on the islands’ abundant resources. Today, the islands remain largely unchanged from the days of the tomol. As I begin my three—day exploration, I am guided by a sense of curiosity and a healthy splash of gusto. Before arriving, I expected to find a dry landscape tinged in brown from the California sunshine. Instead, I am greeted by a colorful scene that unfolds like a painting: rugged bluffs peppered with wildflowers, lush green hills and towering cliffs that drop to meet the Pacific. It’s evident that the islands are brimming with life—at least of the plant and animal variety. People, it seems, have been slower to discover its beauty. I am surprised by this, given that it’s an easy one-hour boat ride from Oxnard, the gateway to this national park. But flying under the radar has been good for the islands: Rangers can steadily work on conservation efforts, and the ecosystem isn’t trampled by overtourism. Selfishly, it’s great for me, too; with plenty of space and only a few others to share it with, it feels like I have the island to myself. While the people are few, the

foxes are many. Small in size (about the size of a housecat!) and native to Santa Cruz Island, these island foxes scamper all around. Each day, I discover one epic view after another. The Montañon Ridge Loop takes me to the highest hikeable point on the island, while Smugglers Cove trail delivers me right to the ocean’s shore. As I sit on the rocky beach, I watch in the distance as kayakers glide across the water and into sea caves. On my final day, I return to the campsite and sink into my camp chair, happily exhausted from exploring. The campground sits beneath a canopy of fragrant eucalyptus trees. I ache from hiking, but this feeling is overridden by 40 VisitOxnard.com

a deep sense of contentment. “What a pleasant place to be,” I think, smiling. A visit to the Channel Islands serves as a reminder that many of the world’s best places are hidden from plain view. This feeling of seclusion, of being far from the bustle of the world and directly in nature, makes the islands so special. Visiting feels like pressing a proverbial reset button. It provides the space, literally and figuratively, to simply exist in the present and to explore a place representative of the way the world once was and should continue to be: wild. Camping on Anacapa Island Channel Islands National Park offers camping year-round. Anacapa Island, closest to mainland California with boat service direct from Oxnard, is a particular treat. It takes a bit of work to reach the campground—a half-mile hike and 157 stairs, to be exact—but campers are well-rewarded. Epic coastal views and an assortment of birds and wildlife await. The Anacapa campground has seven primitive campsites, pit toilets, picnic tables and food storage lockers. Advanced reservations are required and can be made through recreation.gov.

Getting there: Island Packers Cruises (islandpackers.com) is the only boat concessionaire to the islands. Book ferry tickets in advance. What to bring: Hiking shoes, sunscreen, hat and sunglasses, plenty of water and food, trash bags. Don’t forget: Pack it in, pack it out. Be prepared to bag and carry all trash home with you.

Hook’s Sportfishing provides partial-day, full-day and overnight fishing trips and private charters in the Santa Barbara Channel. (Tip: If the fish aren’t biting, you can always enjoy fresh seafood at Fishermen’s Catch in Seabridge Marina or Otani’s Seafood downtown.)

Channel Islands Harbor is a top destination to visit year-round. However, arguably the best time to go is late September through October. The weather and water are warm, and the sunsets are breathtaking. I like to surf and bodyboard. Near the ocean is my favorite place to be.

xnard has quite possibly more taco shops per capita than any other city in the U.S. So it makes sense that tacos are its culinary calling card and a (delicious!) way to delve into the local culture. As I learned while trying to make a small dent in the official Oxnard Taco Trail on a one-day trip, you need at least a few full days to make significant headway on this 20-plus-stop adventure. Ample breaks to rest and digest are a must! But for those who accomplish the impressive feat of checking into 15 locations using the mobile passport— no time restrictions imposed!—bragging rights and an “I Conquered the Oxnard Taco Trail” commemorative t—shirt await. On an early summer day, I embarked on a mission to check out a few spots. I’m a pescatarian, so my friend Cheryl came along to offer a meat—eater’s perspective, which doubled the volume of tacos we could try. We both agree that tacos are one of the world’s most perfect foods, so this “research” trip required zero arm twisting. Our first stop was Yolanda’s Mexican Cafe in Channel Islands Harbor.

The spacious location has indoor and outdoor seating, and we opted for a patio perch to take in the views of boats bobbing on the water. Our à la carte tacos arrived quickly—mashed potato for me and marinated beef for Cheryl—both served on crispy flour shells with heaps of lettuce and a sprinkling of melted cheddar. Simply delicious. Just five minutes away, House of Tacos Grill is tucked unassumingly in a low—key strip mall. A newer addition to the taco scene, the shop has a fast—casual vibe and a fun, contemporary style—from the

I don’t know, think about it!) to the oversized painted portraits of Mexican icons like Frida Kahlo above the tables. Cheryl ordered the Surf & Turf with shrimp and steak, reporting that the aioli sauce gave it a nice tang. I went for the Taco Gobernador, a grilled work of art with Jack cheese, shrimp, bell pepper and onion. From there we ventured downtown, with the biggest concentration of taco spots. We

The Keto taco has a choice of meat (or not!) and thick slices of avocado in a fried-cheese shell. The staff’s suggestion to add guacamole salsa, pickled red onion and habañero lends a kick. The quesa-birria tacos tempted, but we didn’t dare take our chances with a cup of consommé on the road. I guess we’ll just have to return to Oxnard... Oxnard has become the ‘Taco Capital.’ It’s not official, but the city has a lot of great options. SUNRISE SUSTENANCE

BEACH BITES

In the Annex Food Hall, Ragamuffin Coffee Roasters makes an excellent latte (try the lavender honey), but is perhaps best known for its collaborations with breweries like Firestone Walker and Casa Agria Specialty Ales. With locations in Channel Islands Harbor and Wagon Wheel, Honey Cup Coffeehouse & Creamery serves avocado toast, honey biscuits with jam and specialty drinks. (Maple cinnamon latte, anyone?) Located in the Oxnard Transit Center, Cafe Dolce Vita was named one of Yelp’s Top 100 U.S. Restaurants in 2023, and it serves an Instagram—worthy latte with foam art. Bring your drink over to the “Greetings from Oxnard” mural for a selfie with Shaquille the Seal. (Turn to p. 74 for more murals.) Add a spoonful of culture with your caffeine at Xielo Artisan Desserts, which serves traditional Café de Olla and thick Mexican-style hot chocolate. Warning: You may have to ditch your diet. We hear an abuela somewhere saying, “Eat! You’re too skinny!”

For a light lunch you can pack for the beach—or for a trip to the Channel Islands—there are perhaps no better sandwiches in town than those made at Harbor Mart. Order deli meat and cheese piled high inside a roll, or Mediterranean lamb or chicken tucked in pita, then grab your food to—go and hit the sand. Already at the beach? Just steps from Silver Strand, take a break from the waves at The Strandwich. This neighborhood breakfast and lunch spot makes insanely good breakfast burritos; order one with pulled pork, tri—tip or brisket. Here for lunch? Pair a sandwich with a “Box o’ Fries” so big you might need to share—or not! Also in the Silver Strand Beach neighborhood, newcomer The Strand Bar & Grill is a sit—down spot serving weekend—only breakfast and lunch. Had a wild night prior? Chorizo street tacos with a Bloody Mary accompaniment is a “hair of the dog” fix that’ll get you on your feet.
