The Camarillo White Horse is a rare horse breed with its origins firmly rooted in Camarillo. Known for its pure white coloring, the breed is more than 100 years old and began with a single horse, Sultan (aka the “stallion of a dream”). Rancher Adolfo Camarillo, the city’s founding father, purchased Sultan in the early 1900s and was so struck by the stallion’s coloring that he began a breeding program to create an entirely new kind of horse. (It’s true! Studies prove that the Camarillo White Horse has a special genetic marker resulting in a coloring not found in other breeds.) Soon, Sultan and his offspring became synonymous with the city of Camarillo itself. Camarillo White Horses have been featured in the Pasadena Rose Parade and the opening of the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge, and have been ridden by presidents Warren G. Harding and Ronald Reagan. Going to the Chapel

Located at the edge of Old Town, St. Mary Magdalen Chapel carries on the Camarillo family legacy.

Looking to upgrade and expand their crowded, one-room family chapel, brothers Juan and Adolfo Camarillo established St. Mary Magdalen in 1913 after several years of dreaming and planning. The chapel was built in honor of their late father, Don Juan Camarillo, and mother, Martina Hernandez, and named after their eldest sister, Magdalena.

Today, the historic chapel hosts an active congregation and is a wonderful example of the California Mission style. Classified by its white stucco exterior and red-tile roof, the chapel draws in architecture lovers with its palm-lined patio, lush gardens, arched porticos, and colorful stained-glass windows. Inside, visitors find an intricate lattice of exposed beams, paneling, and a dark walnut altar with a handcarved sanctuary. The well-preserved church is a lasting tribute to the Camarillo family.

A Lasting Legacy

Innovation,

LONG BEFORE it was known by its current name, Camarillo has been a close-knit, innovative community for generations. The region’s first residents, the Chumash, recognized the rich agricultural bounty and natural resources at their disposal, utilizing native greenery to make tightly woven baskets to carry water and tomols (plank canoes).

After Spain claimed the area in 1837, land was granted to Jose Pedro Ruiz and later purchased by cattle rancher Juan Camarillo in 1875 for $3.69 an

acre. When Juan passed away in 1880, his 16-year-old son Adolfo took the reins at what was then known as Rancho Calleguas.

A marked change came when Adolfo took over. The young Camarillo would ultimately nurture the spirit of innovation in the area for the next 78 years.

“He was an innovator and very much a community leader,” says Gerry Olsen, author of Don Adolfo Camarillo: A Living Legend. With nearly 10,000 acres in his capable hands, Adolfo shifted the focus of the

ranch from cattle to crops, becoming one of the first growers in the area to introduce lima beans and citrus.

His forward-thinking vision expanded beyond his own property and fostered the beginning of Camarillo as a centrally located Southern California city. “He was the one who gave the land to Southern Pacific Railroad to come through here [in 1899], with the stipulation that there would be a stop in Camarillo,” Olsen says. “That was the beginning of [the town of] Camarillo.” Decades later, Adolfo allowed Highway 101 to expand onto his land, further cementing Camarillo’s identity as a convenient, accessible stop for travelers heading to and from Los Angeles.

Adolfo’s future-driven foresight enhanced the lives of many Camarillo locals, too. A fierce advocate of education, he donated 50 acres for the development of Adolfo Camarillo High School, which opened in 1956.

“He wanted every child [to] get an education,” Olsen says. He also guaranteed that all of his ranch workers’ children could go to school, and served on the Pleasant Valley School Board for over 50 years. (The school board was just one of 38 organizations Adolfo was a member of in his lifetime.)

With how much Adolfo gave to his community until his death in 1958, it’s no wonder that when Camarillo incorporated in 1964, it took his name as its own. After that, expansion was rapid— and very much in keeping with Adolfo’s legacy. Pleasant Valley Hospital was established in 1973, the Camarillo Airport in 1976, California State University Channel Islands in 2002, and Camarillo Public Library in 2007. Today, Camarillo is the fourth-largest city in Ventura County, one of the safest cities in all of California, and has an enduring legacy that pays homage to its founder.

The Story Behind the White Horse

On the brink of extinction, the Camarillo White Horse was saved, preserving the breed’s, and Camarillo’s, legacy for generations to come.

In addition to essentially founding the city of Camarillo and being a huge proponent of innovation and education, Adolfo Camarillo also had a deep love for horses, specifically his Camarillo White Horses. For generations, the Camarillo family were the only owners and breeders of this blazing white horse, but after Adolfo’s daughter, Carmen, passed away in 1987, the family horses went to auction, going their separate ways from the Camarillo family for the first time in more than 65 years. It soon became apparent, however, that the Camarillo White Horse’s numbers were dwindling.

In an effort to save the breed, a small faction of horse owners founded the Camarillo White Horse Association, creating a breeding program to save the unique equine from extinction. Since its founding in

1992, the association has successfully brought the breed’s numbers up from 12 to 23. And although the Camarillo White Horse no longer lives at Camarillo Ranch, a majority have remained in Ventura County.

“[Camarillo White Horses] are the living history of California and, especially, Camarillo and Ventura County,” says Harold Parker, Adolfo’s great-grandson and president of the Camarillo White Horse Association.

“Adolfo got his first stallion [more than] 100 years ago. Not very many things last that long and it’s very important that this breed is preserved.”

Home Sweet Home

Step back in time at Camarillo Ranch, a community gathering place.

After Adolfo Camarillo inherited the ranch from his father in 1880, he built a 6,000-square-foot, 14-room Queen Anne Victorian home (for a mere $10,000). His estate was the centerpiece of the family and ranch, and hosted community celebrations for years.

After Adolfo’s death, a majority of the land was sold off, transforming into housing developments and

business parks, and the house fell into disrepair. In 1997, however, the city began restoring the home with nearly five designated acres to establish the Camarillo Ranch Foundation, an organization designed to maintain and run the ranch for generations to come.

Today, docent-led house tours are offered on the weekends, and school groups can trek through on Wednesdays. Inside, you’ll find soaring 12-foot ceilings, intricate woodwork and paneling, and period-appropriate furnishings. Sit a while on the wraparound porch before strolling the peaceful gardens. (The grounds are open Wednesday through Sunday.) Spread a blanket under the sprawling oak trees, sit by the bubbling fountain shaded by towering palms, or wander through the citrus garden. You’ll quickly forget you’re in the middle of the city!

Camarillo Ranch is also available for weddings and other private

events, with the historic grounds providing a striking backdrop for ceremonies and other special occasions. The property also hosts a number of annual public events throughout the year, like Adolfo Camarillo’s Birthday Celebration —a favorite local tradition. Each October, the ranch turns into a massive party with exhibits, live music, arts and crafts, games, and even a giant cake.

Camarillo Ranch Foundation

In 1998, the city of Camarillo established the Camarillo Ranch Foundation in an effort to preserve, restore, and maintain Camarillo Ranch. The nonprofit foundation hopes to inspire and educate families on the legacy of Adolfo Camarillo through public events, school tours, house tours, and museum exhibits.

A Presidential Past

The Commemorative Air Force Southern California (CAF SoCal) is dedicated to preserving the history of combat aircraft, which were flown by all military services of the United States.

Today, CAF SoCal’s WWII Aviation Museum features eight flyable WWII-era aircraft. Visit to see these planes up close and listen to the roar of the piston engines. The museum is open on the weekends. And for the true aviation enthusiast, book a 20-minute flight for the ultimate experience. See more on the museum on page 29.

Planting the Seed

Camarillo’s agricultural history is an important defining factor that helped establish the town and is why it’s recognized as a major player in the coastal growing region.

Well before California became a state in 1850, the bountiful lands of this locale brought early farmers and ranchers to the area. These hard-working individuals helped shape the future of the township of Camarillo and its economy through ingenuity and industriousness that helped define what we know to be the agricultural industry of the region today.

But what drew homesteaders here? Thanks to the Pleasant Valley region’s rich soils, Mediterranean climate, and natural landscape (not to mention the arrival of the Southern Pacific Railroad), the ability to grow an array of fresh foods—including barley, wheat, lima beans, avocados, and citrus—made this region just about perfect for a year-round growing season.

Today, the region is renowned for growing crops like berries, lemons, avocados, and tomatoes, as well as cut flowers and nursery plants. (In fact, there’s a pretty good chance that the starter plants, trees, and herbs you see at your local nursery and hardware store came from Camarillo.) Deep roots, indeed. – L.B.

Owned by fifth-generation family farmers, McGrath is open for pick-your-own produce seasonally. “As long as there’s something growing, you can pick it here just about year-round,” says Hillary Jiler, a manager at the farm. Come here for the standards (carrots, greens, tomatoes, strawberries, pumpkins), but also non-traditional crops like cucamelons and pepino melons. FOR ELEVATED FUN IN CAMARILLO, TAKE TO THE SKIES!

A plane darts into the sky, nose pointed directly upward as it executes a series of barrel rolls. It hovers for a short moment at the apex of its climb before arching back toward earth.

This is just one of the daring feats executed by skilled pilots at the Wings Over Camarillo Air Show, an annual event that’s been awing visitors for over 40 years. The show’s extensive history, however, pales in comparison to the broader aviation legacy found in Camarillo.

At one point, the city had two military air stations during World War II. The closest one to town, the

Oxnard Air Force Base, was expanded during the Cold War. It has since shuttered but was transformed into today’s Camarillo Airport. Farther away, the air station at Naval Base Ventura County Point Mugu remains in use to this day—albeit with quite a few changes—and hosts the Point Mugu Air Show

While the past is, well, the past, you can still experience the region’s aviation history at the WWII Aviation Museum. Run by the nonprofit Commemorative Air Force Southern California (CAF SoCal) wing, the museum celebrates Camarillo’s local history with an impressive collection of historic military aircraft and aviation artifacts. And thanks to the museum’s location at Camarillo Airport, visitors can experience a few of these antique aircraft for themselves. For instance, take to the skies in the only still-flying Marine Mitchell B-25. This 1940s bomber took a volunteer team 23 years to restore, and a flight in it makes for a truly one-of-a-kind adventure. Several other organizations call the airport home and allow for even more opportunities to soar through the air. Skyrider Ultralights offers scenic lessons over the ocean and alongside the mountains in ultralight aircraft, while Orbic Helicopters will take you on picturesque aerial tours of the area. And with Skydive Coastal California, you can jump out of a plane up to two miles in the air, catching a glimpse of the region’s stunning landscape as you descend (safely) toward it.

Camarillo is home to four award-winning, 18-hole courses, all of which not only offer a rousing game of golf but also views of the surrounding mountains, hills, and agricultural fields.

Many of Camarillo’s golf courses have reasonable rates and packages, as well as lessons and memberships. These country clubs are also a popular spot for weddings (p. 59).

Pick a sport, and Camarillo likely has a spot for you to play. With 28 parks operated by the Pleasant Valley Recreation & Park District, the city is home to professional-quality fields, arenas, courts, and tracks, making it Ventura County’s premier destination for hosting big sports tournaments.

Looking for the perfect baseball diamond to hit that homer? Pick from dozens of fields across multiple parks, including the lighted Baseball Complex at Freedom Park (six youth fields, one adult). Or for a run around the soccer pitch, Pleasant Valley Fields features six lighted fields, plus plenty of space for more matches during the day. If pickleball is your thing, Bob Kildee Community Park has you covered, with four dedicated pickleball courts plus three tennis courts and one multi-use tennis/pickleball court. Or you can grab a spot at one of the six tennis courts at Mission Oaks Park.

But what about inline hockey? Yep, Camarillo has it. Puck around at the roller hockey arena at Freedom Park. For a lap swim or meet, visit the aquatic center at Bob Kildee Community Park.

And if you’re into BMX and skateboarding, catch race nights or a training clinic by BMX Hall of Famer Eric Rupe at Freedom Park’s BMX Raceway, or carve the concrete at the 12,000-square-foot skate park at Bob Kildee Community Park. Camarillo even has an RC track, one of the best in the world, at Freedom Park, regularly hosting state and national events, as well as some of the top racers from around the globe.

Still need more space? California State University Channel Islands (CSUCI) offers two multi-use fields (Potrero Field and North Field) for soccer, flag football, ultimate frisbee, and more, and a recreation center/ basketball facility that can accommodate up to 1,000 people. (Note: The university’s recreation areas are not open to the public and require a reservation. Visit csuci.edu/universityevents to learn more.)

The state beach is fun for all, with a picnic area, palm tree-lined pathways, pirate ship-themed playground, rolling lawns perfect for kite flying, and wheelchair accessibility to the sand.

SILVER STRAND BEACH

18 miles from Camarillo

A quiet spot loved by locals, Silver Strand, in nearby Oxnard, is good for kayaking and fishing. At the southern end of the beach, take selfies in front of the colorful murals.

HUENEME BEACH PARK

13 miles from Camarillo

This 50-acre park has picnic tables and barbecue pits, sand volleyball courts, and a paved beachfront walkway perfect for biking. Stroll to the end of the more than 1,200-foot Port Hueneme Pier to cast a line and take in the views of Channel Islands National Park.

POINT MUGU STATE PARK

12 miles from Camarillo

A sprawling state park in the Santa Monica Mountains, this oceanside locale offers more than 60 miles of trails, campgrounds, and rocky bluffs perfect for spotting migrating whales. Check out Point Mugu Beach, Sycamore Cove Beach, and Thornhill Broome Beach

START IN CAMARILLO Daryl Wagar Trail

Easy, 0.7-mile loop

Located at Camarillo Grove Park, this short-and-sweet hike is perfect for a stroll with the family. Take in the gentle slopes and scenic vistas, plus informative signage with insights on the local flora, fauna, and ecosystems. (Make sure to stop by the kid-friendly Nature Center at the park to learn even more about the area.)

Wildwood Hill Canyon Trail

Easy, 1.9 miles out and back

With a river on one side and Elliot Mountain on the other, this tranquil trail is a fantastic intro to Wildwood Regional Park. The wide pathway makes for an easy and safe trek whether you’re exploring on foot, zipping by on bike, or even horseback riding, and branching trails along the route allow for further exploration if you’re in the mood for adventuring. (Pro tip: Extend your hike when Hill Canyon links up with Hawk Canyon Trail for an invigorating 3.6 miles.) Leashed dogs are welcome.

Calleguas Creek Bike Path

Easy, 4.7 miles out and back

CAMARILLO GROVE PARK

The enclosed dog park here has ample shade, a doggie water fountain, and a toy fire hydrant. (There’s a separate section for smaller pups, too.) Camarillo Grove Park allows dogs to be off-leash Monday through Friday, but the dog park is free-range every day.

MISSION OAKS PARK

This 20-acre community park welcomes leashed dogs to explore the picnic areas, multipurpose fields, and more. Run around the 1.5-mile-long Mission Oaks Community Park Trail with your pooch or hit the offleash dog park along Fieldcrest Drive on weekends from dawn until dusk.

SANTA ROSA VALLEY PARK

Although it’s known for its equestrian routes, Santa Rosa Valley Park’s fantastic trail system, which meanders through 50 acres of open space, is perfect for a leisurely outing with Fido. Roam the rolling hills with your leashed pooch all year long.

If babbling brooks are your thing, this bike path is for you. Running through the east side of Camarillo, the popular paved trail travels alongside the Calleguas Creek, with views of the surrounding mountains and hillsides. Best of all, the path runs under roadways, including Highway 101, so you never have to worry about cars. Take a detour to Pitts Ranch Park at the north end of the trail, or make a stop at Institution Ale Company at the south end for brews and snacks.

Moderate, 4.1-mile loop

WILDWOOD CANYON TRAIL

Difficult, 5.7-mile loop

Twenty minutes away in Thousand Oaks, Wildwood Canyon Trail offers a little bit of everything— water crossings, mountain vistas, caves, historical landmarks, and meadows blooming with sage and cacti. But the highlight of the trip is Paradise Falls, featuring a 40-foot waterfall. Pack sunscreen, and water—long stretches of the trail provide little to no shade, and, with an elevation gain of more than 800 feet, you’re sure to work up a sweat.

CALLING ALL DOGS!

All dogs are welcome in Camarillo.

many animals along the way, including horses, donkeys, chickens, pigs, and even a tortoise. This lightly trafficked trail hosts a number of activity options, including horseback riding and biking, and is accessible year-round. To get to the trail, drive east on Santa Rosa Road from Camarillo for about 15 minutes, then turn left on Vista Grande. Continue on the street until you see the trailhead on your right. (Note: While the trail is open to the public, parts of it pass through private property. Please follow all rules posted on signage in these areas.) Dogs must be kept on leash.

Point Mugu Scenic and Overlook Trails

Moderate, 2.7-mile loop

From wildflowers to panoramic views of the California coastline, this trail in nearby Point Mugu State Park redefines gorgeous. With a steady yet gentle elevation gain of 413 feet, it’s ideal for a brisk trail run. Although it’s beautiful all year long, the best time to explore this loop is spring to early summer, when the wildflowers are in bloom. Some parts of the trail may get muddy, and it’s recommended you wear gear you don’t mind getting dirty. Dogs are not allowed.

Further Out

Hike Channel Islands National Park! Book your spot on the ferry with Island Packers before setting out for a day on Santa Cruz Island’s trails.

Chumash Trail

Difficult, 1.2 miles out and back

Don’t let the short distance fool you. This hike will have you huffing and puffing as you ascend nearly 900 feet in less than a mile. Located off Highway 1, just 15 minutes south of Camarillo, the steep, rocky trail will put your calves through the ringer, but the vistas at the top are well worth the effort, with views of the Pacific Ocean and Channel Islands National Park in one direction and the pastoral grasslands of La Jolla Valley in the other. Sorry, canine lovers— no dogs are allowed on this trail, either.

REAGAN PRESIDENTIAL LIBRARY & MUSEUM

Just over 20 minutes east of Camarillo, the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library & Museum highlights President Reagan’s legacy through more than 125,000 square feet of exhibit space. Climb aboard an actual Air Force

One aircraft that flew seven different presidents, get a glimpse of a to-scale replica of the Oval Office (Fun fact: President Reagan rarely took off his suit jacket in the office.), and gaze upon a small piece of the Berlin Wall in the gardens. The facility is open every day (excluding major holidays) and offers self-guided and docent-led tours.

Have you ever wondered how birds fly, or how they lay eggs, or literally any other question surrounding feathered creatures? Then you have to visit the Western Foundation of Vertebrate Zoology. Housing more than 400 individual collections (including the largest egg collection in the world) and featuring more than one million specimens, this nonprofit ornithology and oology museum is a veritable gold mine of avian history, science, research, and preservation. Don’t miss the raw bar, gleaming with fresh oysters on ice. For a hearty, meat-focused meal, head to Adolfo Grill & Daily Bar for New Zealand rack of lamb with red wine reduction, French-cut pork chops with blackberry-bourbon glaze, or an Angus burger.

When it comes to Italian food, Camarillo is living la bella vita. A favorite at family-run Lucerne Restaurant is the risotto de la casa, a rich combo of shrimp, sausage, chicken, and sun-dried tomatoes. Camarillo Ranch, often called “the Ranch,” is a 4.5-acre property featuring the Camarillo family’s restored 1892 Queen Anne Victorian mansion, a 1905 red barn, and stables, which were once all part of a sprawling 10,000-acre property. Family is the focus of Gerry Ranch, too, where the working farm grows lemons, avocados, and blueberries before coming alive with weddings each weekend. ISLANDS (CSUCI) opened in Camarillo in 2002 as the 23rd campus in the Cal State system. As the only public four-year university in Ventura County, CSUCI brings diversity, innovation, and a spirit of community engagement to Camarillo. University traditions are centered around the land and honor Camarillo’s rich heritage—graduation ceremonies include the sounding of a conch shell by a Chumash elder and striking a ship’s bell from Naval Base Ventura County.

ROAD TRIPPIN’

Conveniently located between two major cities, with a bunch of cool ones in between, Camarillo is situated right off Highway 101. The drive is an easy 52 miles north of Los Angeles and just over 43 miles south of Santa Barbara. If you prefer a more scenic route, take Highway 1 North through Malibu for an oceanview drive.

TAKE THE TRAIN
