Welcome to Charming Galena Country! We’re thrilled to share Galena Country with you through our 2024 Visitors Guide! As you get to know Galena — and the surrounding towns of Jo Daviess County in Illinois’ upper northwest corner — through these images and stories, you’ll discover a place that’s as forward-looking as it is steeped in history. Take Galena’s historic Main Street, for example. Its painstakingly restored buildings hold more than 125 ever-evolving shopping and dining spots — places that mix charm with chic, and old-school with on-trend. In these pages, you’ll discover the best of downtown, from our eclectic shops (p. 44) to classic restaurants (p. 36) to inviting wineries and watering holes (p. 42). Even the surrounding communities offer havens of nostalgia and meccas of modern mindedness. Explore their many charms starting on p. 14. What else will you discover? We’ve showcased amazing ways to enjoy Galena’s pastoral scenery, whether you want to get outside and play (p. 24), enjoy a scenic drive (p. 30) or simply stand in awe of the Mississippi River and a three-state view (p. 31). Sure, this town is proud of its past (see p. 10) — but it’s not stuck in it. A constant influx of influences from visitors keeps Galena Country fresh and open to new ideas. And those new faces replenish Galena’s reservoir of memorable moments. We hope that you’ll visit soon to discover all that Galena Country has to offer. —Galena Country Tourism Team

WELCOME TO GALENA COUNTRY

The

GALENA Effect Have you had a Galena moment? Visiting this charming northwest Illinois town with a mining history (#DYK: galena is a mineral!) unearths nuggets from its mother lode of feel-good. It can happen while you’re shopping, dining or sleeping in an 1800s building downtown; strolling or biking through the countryside; or standing in Ulysses S. Grant’s home. Something clicks and you feel in touch with history, nature, the people you’re with — maybe even yourself. Galena Country is a special place, one where magic can happen. Ready to experience it yourself?

FOREVER GALENA

Spring and Summer

CLOCKWISE FROM TOP: CHESTNUT MOUNTAIN RESORT; HAAS AND HAAS PHOTOGRAPHY; MOLLY HOLMBERG

SPRING As trees and flowers begin to burgeon with new life, it’s time to venture outdoors to experience the beauty of Galena Country. A great place to start is Rutherford Refuge at Twin Bridges, a 24-acre slice of natural heaven in the form of native prairie, meadow and oak woodland along the aptly named Clear Creek near Warren. Just outside Galena along U.S. Highway 20, Gateway Park beckons visitors with a hilltop view of the spires and rooftops of Galena in the river valley below. Spring also brings strawberry season. Head to Terrapin Orchards in Elizabeth to pick your own farm-fresh strawberries. SUMMER There’s nothing like summer in the Midwest, when the corn fields are in full growth and the landscapes are swathed with endless rows of lush green. Summer in Galena Country also means festival season. The tasty highlight? The East Dubuque Wing Fest. Musical acts and delicious barbecue headline the event, including the popular wing-tasting competition where — ultimately — everybody wins. On the third full weekend in June, the Great Galena Balloon Race comes to Eagle Ridge Resort & Spa, filling the sky with colorful hot air balloons. When it’s time to celebrate the 4th of July, Galena Country delivers, with OPPOSITE sparkling events throughout the region. Don’t miss the Trails wind amid spring Elizabeth Freedom Fest and Independence Day wildflowers at Galena Gateway Park. Celebrations in Galena and Stockton. CLOCKWISE FROM TOP Ziplining at Chestnut Mountain Resort; enjoying the sun and water at Millennium Bar & Marina; yellow daisy sunflowers — a spring and summer favorite.

SEASONS

Fall and Winter WINTER Don’t be fooled into thinking the snowy season in Galena Country allows time for hibernation. Schuss down the 19 ski trails at Chestnut Mountain Resort — or tackle the terrain park for snowboarding fun. (Don’t miss the Big Nut Open ski competition in early March!) If you’d rather keep the fun on level ground, go cross-country skiing or snowshoeing on 7 miles of groomed trails at the Nordic Center at Eagle Ridge Resort & Spa. Winter also brings Galena’s Night of the Luminaria and Living Windows. Five thousand candlelit luminaries light up the streets, steps and sidewalks, and stores on Galena’s Main Street come alive with holiday-inspired living windows. It’s enough cozy cheer to transport you straight into a Hallmark Christmas movie.

WILL BYINGTON PHOTOGRAPHY

FALL Galena Country ripens to blissful maturity come fall — making it a great time to visit the area’s agricultural gems. Dittmar Farms in Elizabeth will have apples and pumpkins aplenty, along with hayrides, a corn maze and more. At Orchard Landing in Hanover, 12 varieties of apples weigh down the trees. As the fall chill arrives, Galena Oktoberfest offers the warmth of brews and good fellowship, and the Galena Country Fair brings craft booths and treats from pork chops and brats to fudge and funnel cakes. And don’t miss the Galena Halloween Parade — the area’s longest and spookiest.

EXPLORE GALENA’S RICH HISTORY WITH A TOUR OF THE TOWN’S LOVINGLY RESTORED PAST. Galena was a boom town for much of the mid1800s. (It was bigger than Chicago!) But when lead mining slowed, the Galena River silted in and steamboats gave way to railroads, Galena went into a century-long sleepy decline. Now fully restored, the town looks much like it did in 1860, when Ulysses S. Grant moved here to help his father run Grant & Perkins Leather Store on Main Street. Some 85% of downtown buildings are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Use this guide to scope out the area’s historical perspectives.

Ulysses S. Grant Home State Historic Site This Italianate-style home was gifted to the Grant family after the Civil War ended in 1865. (It cost $2,500!) The home stayed in the Grant family until they donated it as a museum in 1904. With most of the original furniture still displayed, you’ll experience the home as Grant and his wife, Julia, did.

CHICAGO GREAT WESTERN RAILWAY DEPOT MUSEUM ELIZABETH Inside this former Chicago Great Western Railway station, find thousands of railroad artifacts and books and step inside a full-size caboose.

The Washburne House Constructed in 1843 by U.S. Congressman Elihu Washburne, this Greek Revival-style home was #Forever one of the grandest in Original Galena, with six white marble fireplaces on the first floor. Look for the spot where Grant received the telegraph announcing he’d been elected the 18th president of the United States in 1868.

STOCKTON HERITAGE MUSEUM STOCKTON Learn about the history of Kraft cheese where it all began. J.L. Kraft opened the first cheese plant in Stockton in 1914. The museum is home to one of the largest collections of Kraft memorabilia and advertising in the country.

HISTORY

Belvedere Mansion

DeSoto House Hotel Opened in 1855, the DeSoto House is the oldest operating hotel in Illinois. President Lincoln spoke from the balcony in 1856, and Grant used rooms 209 and 211 of the hotel for his presidential campaign headquarters in 1868. Grant Park Cross the pedestrian bridge from downtown to this picture-perfect park and study the cannons and monuments that overlook the Galena River. Among the highlights: the “Blakely of Grant Park,” which fired some of the first shots in the Battle of Fort Sumter and the “Napoleon,” commonly used in the Civil War. Belvedere Mansion Built in 1857, this 22-room mansion has been restored to its mid-19th-century glory. Don’t miss the green velvet drapes from the set of “Gone With the Wind.” The owners bought them at auction, and they’re a favorite for visitors.

Dowling House

FROM TOP: HAAS AND HAAS PHOTOGRAPHY (2); ILLUSTRATION: KATIE VERNON

Dowling House Nestled among the shops and restaurants of downtown Galena, the town’s oldest home was built out of limestone around 1826. Dowling was a trader who quickly became the largest iron dealer on the Upper Mississippi. Here, you could buy stoves, hinges, nails, picks and shovels. Today, you can take a tour and hear stories about some of the town’s earliest residents. The Galena & U.S. Grant Museum Housed in an Italianate mansion, the museum houses exhibits on Grant, the Civil War and more. Captain a remote-controlled steamboat, see a preserved mining shaft and marvel at Civil War-era artifacts like the Vicksburg Flag. Hanging in the gallery is the original “Peace in Union” painting by Thomas Nast, depicting Lee’s surrender to Grant at Appomattox in 1865.

STAGECOACH TRAIL

In the mid-1800s, the stagecoach was the main mode of overland transport for passengers and mail. This scenic road follows the original stagecoach route between Galena and Chicago. Read about what to see along the way on page 30.

You might meet “The Lady in Black” at the DeSoto House Hotel!

Galena’s Haunted History WITH SO MANY HISTORIC BUILDINGS, YOU CAN BET THERE ARE SPOOKY STORIES TO BE TOLD. AMELIA’S GALENA GHOST TOURS Take the hour and fifteen minute shuttlebus tour to many of Galena’s paranormal hot spots, including the Old City Cemetery and the Robinson Miners cottage, which dates to 1840. Go horseback riding at Shenandoah Riding Center. Wander over Galena’s hill country in the most ancient of ways on a guided horseback ride. Shenandoah Riding Center leads trips all year but advises winter as the most serene time for riding. In addition to trail rides, the center offers lessons, wagon rides and more.

Extending 8 miles (one-way) from Buehler Preserve to Chestnut Mountain, the Galena River Trail is an ideal family ride. Gentle grades and a packed surface invite a leisurely pace with plenty of scenic breaks. Meander along the Mississippi River to Casper Bluff Land & Water Reserve. Though the bike path officially ends near Casper Bluff, you can make a right turn and follow lightly traveled South River Road another 2.6 miles to the base of Chestnut Mountain Resort. Break up the ride with a chairlift to the resort’s summit and a refreshing drink with a view before making the return trip.

TACKTICS GALENA For a more grounded experience, visit the mini horses at Tacktics. You can feed them, brush them, learn about their history and much more.

Durty Gurt’s Burger Joynt

Deliciously Downtown

Where to Eat on Main Street

Eating out in downtown Galena doesn’t get much better than this! These classic dining experiences make for an unforgettable meal. Log Cabin Steakhouse Run by the Rigopoulos family for more than 40 years, this landmark has been in operation since 1937. Start with the saganaki appetizer — which is set aflame tableside to shouts of “opa!” — before tucking into a USDA Prime steak. Fried Green Tomatoes This Italian food favorite is located inside a historic building that once housed the leather shop where Ulysses S. Grant worked. Today, the menu includes steaks, seafood and pasta. Try the fried green tomatoes and save room for dessert (we suggest the house-made vanilla bean crème brulee). The Generals’ Restaurant This restaurant at the DeSoto House Hotel is named in honor of Galena’s nine Civil War generals. It offers a lounge and dining rooms surrounded by original brick walls and beamed ceilings. Try the gulf shrimp wrapped in bacon or the slow-roasted, seasoned prime rib — a Saturday-only specialty.

Fritz & Frites For a European bistro feel, this cozy eatery serves up Alsatian cuisine — a little German, a little French. Craving German cuisine? Sample the wiener schnitzel or sauerbraten (marinated beef), served with red cabbage or sauerkraut. Feeling French? Try the steak frites or escargot. Durty Gurt’s Burger Joynt When you’re craving a juicy burger, there’s no better place to go! Durty Gurt’s serves up handmade half-pounders topped with everything from cheese and bacon to avocado and jalapenos. In addition to sandwiches, melts and fried seafood, you can also enjoy a cocktail, a Eat Well! root beer float or a Scan to find a full list milkshake (including of dining options in boozy shakes!). SEEK NATURE Restore and explore at Hawk Valley Retreat, just 8 miles east of downtown Galena. Birdwatch, stroll the 10 acres of meadows and gardens, or relax in the gazebo.
