What are Effective Microorganisms (EM's)?

EM stands for effective microorganisms. EM is an amazing technology discovered and developed

by Dr. Teruo Higa, in the 1980‟s. The secret to EM‟s widespread success is its capacity to naturally remove harmful toxins and restore nature‟s microbial balance, whether it is on mineral, plant, animal, or human levels. EM technology has gained rapid recognition and use around the world and is now used in more than 160 countries and manufactured in more than 60 countries worldwide.

There is nothing new about the technology of Effective Microorganisms. Nature has been using this technology for billions of years. The breakthrough was in creating a symbiotic alliance of beneficial microorganisms that create a chain-reaction of healthy by products.

EM‟s are mixed cultures of beneficial natural fermentative microorganisms that can be applied to increase the necessary microbial diversity needed for living. The use of EM Technology has broadened in the last two decades from agriculture to water treatment, odour control, animal husbandry, human health, and numerous other industrial treatments.

What does EM contain?

EM is a unique blend of totally organic effective micro organisms that when together create a greatly beneficial effect on the environment they are placed into. The principal micro-organisms in EM are: Photosynthetic Bacteria. The photosynthetic or phototropic bacteria are a group of independent, self supporting microbes. These synthesize useful substances from the secretions of roots and organic matter, by using sunlight and the heat of soil as sources of energy.

Lactic acid bacteria. Lactic acid bacteria produce lactic acid from sugars and other carbohydrates developed by photosynthetic bacteria and yeast. Some well known, foods and drinks such as yoghurt and pickles have been made with lactic acid bacteria for centuries.

Lactic acid is also a strong sterilizing compound, and suppresses harmful micro-organisms Yeast. Yeasts synthesize anti-microbial and other useful substances required for plant growth from amino acids and sugars secreted by photosynthetic bacteria, organic matter and plant roots How Does EM Work EM works by naturally manufacturing beneficial substances to enhance plant growth. The unique mixture of EM‟s create amino acids, nucleic acids, bioactive substances and sugars, all of which promote plant growth and development. The metabolites developed by these micro-organisms are then absorbed directly into plants and act as substrates for increasing beneficial populations. Lactic acid bacterium promotes the decomposition of organic material and at the same time ferments these materials, thereby removing the unpleasant smells associated with decomposing organic matter. The bioactive substances created by the mixture, such as hormones and enzymes promote active cell and root division.

How to Look After EM EM is a „living culture‟ of microorganisms, Therefore to maximize the life of EM, it needs to be looked after so: Keep EM in an airtight container Keep stored EM out of direct sunlight Store EM at room temperature Keep EM away from chemicals 2|Page © EM Sustainable Living 2010

The quality of EM can be checked by testing ph levels. The optimum ph levels should be between ph 4 and ph 3.7. The simplest way of checking EM is to smell it, it should smell sweet and sourly. If EM smells unpleasant then dispose of it, it has “Gone Off” and should not be used.

EM Rice Rinse Water (EMRRW) Many books on EM and Far Eastern EM recipes mention EM Rice Rinse Water (EMRRW). This is the water used to wash rice before cooking. It is best to collect the water in a basin and use the first rinsing of rice only. This water is normally added to sugar or molasses to make EM based cleaners.

How is EM sold?

The EM sold by us is the approved EMRO® trademarked product and is sold under the trade name of EM-1 in either 1litre or 250ml plastic bottles. EM-1 can be used immediately however it is best to “Activate” EM-1 into EM Activated (EMA). The primary reason to activate EM is economy, not effectiveness. It is perfectly acceptable to use EM without activating it, however, adding a sugar source and culturing the micro-organisms ensures that the microbes are active. The end result will be a full strength culture of EM that can then be diluted and applied. A one litre bottle of EM-1 will produce twenty litres of EMA and a 250ml bottle will produce five litres. Once EM-1 has been opened it should be used within 12 months.

How to Prepare EM EM-1 can be used immediately by diluting with clean water. However if EM-1 is to be used immediately it is better to be mixed with equal parts molasses or sugar and then applied i.e.

1 part molasses/sugar, 1 part EM-1 and 100 parts clean water. This is a 1:1:100 ratio. Adding a sugar source adds an immediate boost to the microorganisms and provides immediate food for them.

EM -1 can also be expanded to make EMA. The primary reason for doing is to make it more economical to use. The expansion does not make the EM more efficient, or weaken the strength of EM. The produced EMA is a full strength product, you then use the same dilution rates as EM-1, e.g. for making a 1:100 mix use 1 part EMA to 100 parts clean water. Note: once EMA has been expanded it should not be expanded further.

Activating EM-1 EM-1 should be activated by adding water and A+. (Liquid Cane Sugar) at the rate of one part EM-1, one part molasses and twenty parts of water. 1:1:20 EM Activated Recipe: The following calculation makes 1 Litre of EM Active (EMA) 50 ml EM-1 50 ml Molasses (A+ Liquid Cane Sugar) 900 ml Water = 1 litre EM Activated (EMA) EM Activator Whilst it is not strictly necessary to use a fermentation activator we offer the “Garden Yoghurt” activator. to ensure the best fermentation possible. The fermenter contains a 1 litre vessel with an integral pressure release valve and a heated fermentation vessel to ensure optimum fermentation at the correct temperature.

The fermenter is also ideal for starting other yeast cultures such as sourdough, home brew and wine cultures. A recipe for sourdough bread is provided with each fermenter. The fermenter is also ideal for quickening the activation of kefir. Additional fermenter‟s are available for fermenting larger quantities of EM these come in two sizes for fermenting up to 30 litres of EM and up to 60 litres of EM, prices are available on request.

Method Always use clean equipment and additive free water.

Take a 1 litre measuring jug and half-fill it with hot not boiling water Dissolve 50 ml of molasses in the measuring jug, stir well.

Stir in 50 ml of EM-1 solution.

Pour the solution into a plastic container, add the remaining water then seal the top with a lid. An airlock as used by winemakers is ideal if a larger quantity is being made.

Place the container in a warm place to ferment. You will need to release the produced fermentation gas by loosening the lid every day, or to save the inconvenience just leave the lid slightly loose so that the gas can escape.

NOTE: EMA has a shorter life that EM-1. It is best to use EMA within 4-8 weeks of production and it is important that EMA should not be expanded further. EMA can then be used for a variety of uses: In The Home and Vehicles EM is a very acidic solution that re-populates surfaces with beneficial microbes however; it is not harmful to the surface treated. The presence of these microbes discourages mould, fungus and harmful bacteria from taking root. EM helps to eliminate odours from pets, cigarette smoke, and odour-causing bacteria. Keep a small squirt bottle filled with EM by the kitchen sink. EM can then be added to water for washing vegetables, or to pour down the sink to reduce odours, and to spray on sponges or cloths to keep them fresh and reduce harmful bacteria.

One or two tablespoons of EM can be added per load as the washing machine fills with water. This is recommended for light coloured laundry since the microbes love fabric dyes, and dark coloured articles have a tendency to fade. If using EM reduce your detergent to 1/3 the usual amount. If possible, let the clothes pre-soak for 10-15 minutes before running through the cycle. (EM should act as a dirt repellent keeping clothing fresher and cleaner for longer). The added bonus of using EM is that it should reduce normal body odour.

Use 1 tablespoon of EM to 5 litres of warm temperature water for mopping ceramic tile or vinyl floors. No detergent is needed. This solution is also ideal for washing paintwork on cars and should keep paintwork brighter for longer. For wood floors and furniture, dilute 3/4 dessertspoon to 5 litres water. Wipe dry immediately.

Add 1 teaspoon of EM to a litre of water, and spray or wipe on tile, porcelain, and Formica. Let stand on wood or plastic cutting boards to discourage salmonella and other harmful bacteria. Then rinse.

This dilution should be used within 3 days.

Diluted EM can be sprayed lightly in shoes to keep them smelling fresh and on shower curtains to discourage mould Clean dustbins & 'wheelie bins' with EM to reduce odours. To remove really strong offensive smells use a 1:10 solution of EM to water and spray the area. If the smell is really strong several sprays may be necessary to remove.

Air Freshener (Can be used in Vehicles etc) Use a diluted solution to freshen rooms and vehicles. Spray generously in vehicle interiors, door panels, upholstery, and carpets to freshen and deodorize.

Toilets Spray EM around the toilets and smells should be much reduced.

Animals Spray a thorough solution of EM on animals and smells will be reduced. The coat needs to be completely wetted. This will keep the “doggie” smells down when dog‟s coats are wet. All animals will benefit from the addition of EM to their drinking water.

Insects Spray a solution of EM one tablespoon to a litre of water around the area concerned and it should keep flies etc away.

Water Gardens/Features Adding EM to water gardens, ponds and water features at the rate of 1:10000 directly to the water will help to keep the water in good condition.

Units of Measurements One Teaspoon is equal to 5 millilitres, One Dessertspoon is equal to 10 millilitres, One Tablespoon is equal to 20 millilitres Gardening and Soil Improvement EM can be used to inoculate plants, water and soil in various ways to achieve beneficial results.

EM can be sprayed on soil as a pre-planting treatment, used to inoculate seeds or transplants, and applied to growing crops as a foliar spray or through irrigation systems. EM is beneficial in growing nursery crops, container-grown plants, and even in hydroponics. EM can be applied to cover crops and green manures during growth and upon incorporation into the soil the EM will help the green manure to be absorbed into the soil. EM applied to pastures will produce good results. After crops are harvested, an application of EM will help to breakdown crop residues; use a 1:100 dilution rate Pre-Planting: Between two and three weeks before planting, apply a solution of EM and water to the soil at a 1:100 dilution rate. Then for most crop applications, EM-1or EMA is diluted with water at a ratio of 1 part EM to 500 parts of water. Do not apply with pesticides or fungicides. It is best to start on a small scale and experiment with EM to determine the best methods and ratios for specific locations. Apply as a spray, drench or introduce into irrigation water.

Gardeners and vegetable growers may want to try soaking seeds in a solution of EM before planting to increase seed viability. Dilute EM with water at 1:1000. Soak seeds in solution for 5-10 minutes and no longer. Plant immediately or air dry and plant as required.

Nursery / Container-grown Plants: Inoculate with EM at seeding and transplant stages, then on a monthly basis thereafter. Orchid growers have achieved good results by inoculating with EM immediately after planting in sterile media. Use the standard dilution of 1:1000.

Hydroponics: In hydroponics crop production systems, EM can be diluted with the nutrient solution at a rate of 1:10,000. This practice will coat the root systems with beneficial micro-organisms and make nutrient uptake more efficient.

Vegetables, Fruits & Herbs: Spray the standard dilution of 1:500 onto the plants. Flowers apply as a pre-planting treatment 1:100 dilution, and then at dilution 1:1000 at planting/transplanting and every three to four weeks during crop growth If introducing EM into an irrigation system, the dilution rate should be increased to 1:10,000.

EM Allotment Trial in Glasgow I would like to thank all those who took part in the EM Allotment Trial during 2010. Allotment holders from Beechwood, Denniston, Oatlands and New Victoria allotments took part in the first EM trial ever held in Scotland, thank you, you know who you are. Each of the selected holders was given a litre of EMA on a monthly basis from April to October, and they selected the area of ground and crops to be treated. The only instruction they followed was to water the ground with a dilution of 1:100, leave for a week or two and then plant as normal. Further watering was at 1:500 or thereabouts.

The growing season started off very wet during April with plantings delayed until the weather improved. May and June were dry and warm with little rain and all crops initially got off to a good start, and then suffered from a lack of water. However, the weather during July and August was colder than normal and it rained every day through the month of July and almost every other day during August. September and October were mixed with a few dry days and a lot of very rainy days, with temperatures below the average for that time of year.

Consequently some crops were delayed however they eventually caught up to normal. The crops treated with EM were spectacular. They were larger than the untreated plants and at times as much as two or three times larger than the untreated plants. Marrows particularly courgettes were very good with some plants producing in excess of 30 fruits and all other marrows producing good quality fruits. Soft fruits, legumes, brassica‟s, onions and leeks were also very good with crops producing larger, tastier fruits and vegetables. Herbs were also extremely good with parsley and garlic in particular being exceptional. Apple and pear trees were treated with EM as they budded and it is fair to say that crops have been very successful with many of the buds ripening and the tree‟s producing their largest ever crop.

EM-5 Organic Pest Control Non Toxic Chemical Free Insect Repellent

EM-5 is a non toxic chemical free insect repellent. Insects will be driven away by a thorough soaking with EM-5 and it will also ferment the insect‟s food supply, when the insect returns to the nest. EM-5 acts by creating a barrier around the plant, thereby protecting the plant from insects and pests. In addition contamination of food stored by insects by EM initiates a fermentation process in the feed, which makes it inedible to the insect populations. This also helps to reduce insect populations.

Personal Hygiene EM can be added to washing or bathing water at one dessertspoon per use. It is effective at keeping toilet bags, facecloths, sponges etc. odour free and reduces dirt. EM can be used anywhere. If using a sleeping bag, spray a solution of a dessertspoon of EM to 1 litre of water into the bag, let it dry and the bag won‟t smell its uses are only limited by your imagination. Make your surroundings more pleasant and beneficial.

EM for Personal Care EM can be used for personal care and wellbeing purposes. EM is so diverse and beneficial, that we believe there are many more ways of how and where to use EM and you should try to experiment and find out for yourself.

EM may be used bath water (with baking soda to soften hard water) EM may be brushed onto teeth EM may assist in bad breath control EM can be used as a hair rinse EM will remove unwanted fragrances from hair and skin products EM may be used to clean wounds and sores EM may be used for insect bites or other skin irritations (stinging, burning or itchy) EM may be used for athlete‟s foot or other fungal problems EM can be used as an under-arm odour remover (instant bath) EM can be used in drinking water These are provided as suggestions only, however some of the practices have been tried by the author and others, with no adverse reactions. However, the user assumes all liability in the use of this information.

Afghanistan Earlier in 2010 EM was trialed in Afghanistan, by members of the British armed forces. The claims made in regard to the benefits of using EM were substantiated. EM was supplied in both EM-1 and EMA form as well as providing A+ molasses and the necessary equipment for expansion. It was reported that the application of EM onto the body did reduce body odour and the application of EM onto combat clothing kept the clothing cleaner and fresher for longer. EM sprayed onto sleeping bags kept the bags smelling fresher and EM used for washing purposes reduced the smells associated with toilet bags.

EM was also successful in making the cleaning of the living quarters easier and generally assisted in making life better for those unfortunate enough to be deployed there.

Bokashi Bokashi is a Japanese term meaning „fermented organic matter‟. It is often referred to as a type of „composting‟ but it is actually an anaerobic or aerobic fermentation process, resulting in a much different end product than that produced via traditional composting. Anaerobic composting is normally carried out indoors and is used in conjunction with specially designed bokashi bins.

Aerobic composting is normally done out of doors.

Bokashi Bins Bokashi bins are many and vary in shape and size the bins we offer are pictured above. We offer two styles of bins that are not out of place in the kitchen and both bins are proven to last a number of years with normal usage.

We offer a bokashi bin that is designed and manufactured in Japan. This bin has a beige coloured body with a green lid and handle. The internal capacity of the bin is 18 litres and it is more robust bin than the European bin.

The European bin is designed and manufactured in the UK and has a capacity of 16 litres. This bin is grey coloured with a yellow lid and handle. The bins are both made from polypropylene that has been impregnated with EM ceramics. Both bins have an internal shelf to allow drainage and a tap conveniently fitted to the front of the bins that allows the liquid produced during the fermentation process to be easily removed. Both bins are designed to last a number of years.

The produced liquid is rich in microorganisms and is a valuable by product of the fermentation process. The liquid can be used as a household drain cleaner or as a garden or plant fertilizer. If used as a garden or plant fertilizer the dilution rate is 1:100 with water. Use neat for drain cleaners, an added bonus is that smells from drains should be much reduced due to the beneficial effects of the effective microorganisms. The liquid should be used immediately and not stored. Bokashi bins work in conjunction with bokashi bran.

According to a study by the Waste and Resources Action Programme (Wrap), households throw away about a third of the food they buy. About half of the 6.7 million tonnes of food thrown in the “wheely bin” each year is edible and the rest comprises waste such as peelings and bones. Food accounts for 19% of domestic waste, cooked food is more likely to be thrown away than raw ingredients and fruit and vegetables are the most common uncooked foods to be discarded. All this waste then gets taken to landfill sites around the UK which are not only nearly full, but also account for a huge percentage of methane emissions (one of the greenhouse gases) that pollute our atmosphere.

Bokashi Bran Bokashi Bran Bokashi bran is made from EM-1, molasses, water and an organic carrier. The manufacturing process takes several weeks to complete and infuses the material with EM‟s and turns it into bokashi bran. The infused material is normally a seed based organic material that is rich in carbon but any source of natural organic material that can be finely ground can be used. When bokashi bran is used with a bokashi bucket all kitchen scraps can be placed into the bucket and turned into a rich source of plant nutrients. The friendly microbes in bokashi bran ferment the waste rather than decomposing it, hence the lack of any rotting smell associated with discarded food. The fermentation of materials allows you to put fish, meat, cooked and uncooked food into the bokashi bucket as they will all pickle, not putrefy. This method of composting is ideal for use within the home, office, schools or anywhere food is being disposed of and encourages environmental awareness. When ready the composted matter is dug into the soil or added to a compost bin or wormery, it then gives a slow release of nutrients and continues to inoculate the soil with effective microorganisms, thus feeding the surrounding plants. This method of composting alleviates kitchen waste going to a landfill tip.

How Does Bokashi Bran Work Bokashi bran works by introducing EM‟s into the material to be composted, and also provides food for the organisms to work. All you have to do is for every three to five centimetres of food waste placed into the bokashi bin, add a handful of bokashi bran (about 15-20 grams) enough to just cover the compostable material and then compress the mixture. Compressing the mixture helps to maintain the anaerobic conditions that the microbes need to do their work and long as they have food to live on they will do so, efficiently and effectively. The bran provides the necessary food so every time waste food is added to the bin more bokashi bran is added, more microbes become active and they all continue to work and spread throughout the bucket. When the bucket is full (it takes an average family about two weeks to fill the bucket) just leave the bucket in a warm place (15°C minimum)for at least two weeks, a bit longer in the winter, use a second bucket and continue the cycle.

Fermented bokashi Fermented bokashi looks very different to normal compost as the picture above shows. The original material that was placed into the bin should still be recognisable, in this example cabbage. Just take the bokashi bucket out to a compost bin and empty it into the material or bury the waste in the garden, wash the bucket with clean water and reuse as required. The buried compost is acidic at first but will be quickly neutralized by the soil. It will take between 6-10 weeks for the buried compost to be incorporated into the soil, depending on temprature.

Bokashi bran is also an ideal soil conditioner and helps to rejuvenate tired soils, 50-100 grams per square metre. As a soil conditioner Bokashi bran provides a source of nourishment for the microorganisms that grow in the soil and provide microbial diversity for good bacteria. These “good bacteria” establish themselves on a permanent basis in the soil, multiply and then dominate the harmful bacteria, viruses and fungi that are present. This means that plants receive more essential energy and have an increased resistance to harmful bacteria and fungi.

Bokashi bran is also an ideal food supplement for chickens and poultry and added to their feed it reduces their waste from smelling bad. EM added to their drinking water keeps the water fresher and keeps the chickens or poultry healthier.

Aerobic Bokashi Aerobic compost can be made by layering organic materials on a water resistant material such as a tarpaulin and then watering the materials with a solution of one part EM-1, one part molasses to one thousand parts of water (1:1:1000) as they are added to the pile. Use about 15 litres of the diluted solution per cubic metre of materials in the pile. This is equivalent to about 3 teaspoons of EM-1 and 3 teaspoons of molasses to 15 litres of water. Ensure the materials are sufficiently covered with the solution to be wet. Then cover the pile to keep out rain etc. The pile should heat up and may need to be turned. The compost should be ready in a few weeks (depending on the weather) using this method. The compost produced is not brown and crumbly like traditional composts and looks very similar to what it looked like when it was placed in the pile. However the EM‟s have converted the materials to a highly nutritious plant material. Remember effective microorganisms prefer warm weather and go dormant when the temperature drops below 6°C once the temperature rises they become active again.

EM Health and Wellness Effective Microorganisms products and technologies using EM are being researched around the world for their effects on human health. Biological medicine, naturopathic, allopathic, homoeopathic, and Asian medicine are all expanding their knowledge on the connections between health, healing, spirituality, and the earth. For those who understand EM Technology, they see a natural crossover between homeopathic, naturopathic, and energized medicine.

EM technology works on frequencies emitted by the microbes, the trace minerals, and magnetic wave resonance. EM Sourdough Starter (using the EM Fermenter) Sourdough starter is easy to make, take a cupful of flour and a cupful of water, (additive free water to ensure the sourdough fermentation) and mix well together. The amount of EM added to the recipe is not critical, add at least a capful of EM-1 to this mixture or 30ml of EMX Gold. Place the starter mixture into the provided 1litre fermentation container and place in the fermenter. After 8 hours pour out half the mixture and put in another cupful of flour and another of water. Mix well and leave again for 8 hours. It is easy to see if the starter is ready as bubbles will have formed in the mixture. Repeat if necessary.

Gregoire Michaud a Michelin chef based in the Four Seasons Hotel, Hong Kong has adapted this recipe and published the results on his blog which can be found at http://www.gregoiremichaud.com/ EM Sourdough Bread This recipe is adapted from the Layey recipe for “No Knead Bread”. There are many videos posted on You Tube regarding this method of making bread. The bread produces a bread loaf with a hard golden brown crust.

Ingredients Half cup of sourdough starter 3 cups of bread flour (may be varied according to taste, i.e. 1 cup of wholemeal to 2 cups of bread flour) 1to 2 teaspoons of salt (depending on taste) 1 cup of water preferably mineral water (additive free water to ensure the sourdough fermentation) Equipment Mixing bowl, non metallic spoon, lidded casserole dish.

Method Place all the dry ingredients into a mixing bowl and mix well.

Mix the sourdough starter and the water together and mix with a non metallic spoon. Stir into the dry ingredients and mix well, the mix will be sticky. Once mixed cover and leave in a reasonably warm place for between 8 - 20 hours to allow bread to rise. (Proving times may vary as the sourdough, is natural) Your dough should have about doubled in size. Sprinkle some flour over the top and place the dough on a well-floured surface. It MUST be WELL floured, or the dough will stick. Now, simply fold the 11 | P a g e © EM Sustainable Living 2010

dough from the sides, and then the top and bottom, like you were folding all four sides to the centre, and turn it over. Put the dough into a well floured proving bowl and leave in a reasonably warm place for between 1 - 2 hours to allow the dough to rise.

If the mixture has risen put the empty lidded casserole dish into the oven and allow it to heat up to 250°C. Once you are satisfied the oven temperature has been reached (250°C), open the oven and remove the lid from the casserole dish, remember to use oven gloves, then put the mixture into the dish and replace the lid. Cook for 30 minutes, then remove the lid. Turn the oven down to 200°C and continue cooking for another 10-20 minutes. Check the loaf to see if it has sufficiently browned, if not continue cooking for another 5-10 minutes. Cooking times vary according to individual ovens.

EM Ceramics Effective microorganisms can be fermented and then baked in clay to form products that are known under the group name of EM ceramics. The microorganisms become an integral part of the structure of the ceramics and as they are an integral part of the ceramics their positive activity can be retained for a long time. EM ceramics are best suited to be used in water. In the ceramics the effective microorganisms work at an optimal level and all of their properties are preserved. Moreover, if the organisms have enough food they will multiply. Once the process of multiplication has started, the newly-formed organisms will not be retained in the clay but are free to move where they want and perform their natural function.

When the EM ceramics are placed in water they have an immediate effect through a process of resonance. The longer that the EM ceramics remain in the water, the better the results will be. The recommended amount of EM ceramics depends on the amount of water. The EM ceramics must amount to one thousandth part of the water mass. Therefore, one cubic metre of water will require one kilogram of ceramics. Where larger and constant masses of water are concerned, such as ponds or swimming pools, the amount of ceramics can be reduced by ten to twenty percent.

EM Ceramic Powder EM ceramic powder is a versatile product that has many uses. It can be used as a soil enhancer, assist in the fermentation of kitchen waste (Bokashi compost) and can be added to building products such as paint, wallpaper paste, cement and concrete. There are three types of EM ceramic powder, EM Super Cera C, Amron A (EMX-A) and Amron B (EMX-B) powder.

EM Super Cera-C is a finely ground version of EM ceramics and is ideal for using to improve soil fertility. Super Cera-C has the ability to trap the energy in sunlight and re-transmit it back into the soil where it can then be used by the EMs. Super Cera C powder is sold in 500 gram bags or 1 kilo bags. Super Cera-C powder is applied to the soil. Simply sprinkle onto the soil surface and then gently rake in.

Amron A (EMX-A) and Amron B (EMX-B) powder is designed to be used in fixed structures such as buildings. Amron A ceramic powder is manufactured to be added to paint and wallpaper pastes and applied to walls and is a finer powder than Amron B. Amron A is a light coloured powder and is mixed in with paints and wallpaper pastes at the ratio of 1-3% by volume. The powder helps to neutralise the odours given off by the paint and will exert its resonance properties throughout the room, making the environment 'healthy' and therefore a pleasant place to be.

Amron B is designed to be added to concrete at the mixing stage with concrete and adds many benefits to the concrete. Concrete should be up to 10% stronger and there should be less drying shrinkage. The application of Amron B is also known to help eliminate 'Sick Building Syndrome' The application rate for Amron B is 500 gram per square metre of concrete.

The products come packaged in sealed bags of 500 grams.

Chop up the citrus peel and add to the container to be used.

Dissolve 50 gms of sugar in some of the warm but not boiling water and add to the container, then add the 50 ml of EM-1 and mix well, add the remaining water and close the bottle air tight. Leave to ferment in a warm place for one week. Release gas formed every morning.

Do not dilute and use it as a general cleaning detergent. Should last for about 8 weeks.

Can be used immediately after fermentation is complete.

EM Rice Rinse Water (EMRRW) Based Cleaner Water from rice rinse water, first washing only 1 litre in total and warm.

White Sugar 30 gms.

EM 20 mls Add the juice of a citrus fruit off your choice or a scented flower of your choice or even an essential oil, the choice of scent is yours to make .

Method Collect 1 litre of rice rinse water (RRW) from when rice is being washed An empty 1or 2 litre plastic soft drinks bottle is ideal for making this cleaner.

Dissolve 30 gms of sugar in the warm but not boiling rice rinse water (RRW) and add to the container, then add the 20 ml of EM-1 and shake the contents.

Transfer to a spray bottle.

Do not dilute and use it as a general cleaning detergent. In the UK this cleaner should last for about 8 weeks. Can be used immediately.

KEFIR Kefir is a fermented milk drink, and is prepared by inoculating milk with kefir grains. Kefir and Kefir grains have been around for centuries and are totally organic. Kefir grains are a combination of bacteria and yeasts in a matrix of proteins, lipids, and sugars that look like miniature cauliflower florets. There are many different beneficial bacteria and yeasts found in kefir grains all of which are extremely beneficial to human health.

Kefir Grains Kefir is a known organic probiotic source that has a positive effect on our bodies. The complex micro flora of kefir is known to stimulate our immune system to help ward off infections.

Kefir is self perpetuating and the grains are removed from each batch and added to fresh milk for producing the next batch. Kefir is fermented, generally overnight and fermentation of the milk yields a product with a consistency similar to yoghurt that has a unique pleasant slightly sour taste. Kefir can be added to other foods and many people add fruits and honey to alter the taste. Sufficient Kefir grains can be provided with each order of EM-1 and EMX Gold, at no charge, should the customer request it. The amount provided will be sufficient to convert 200ml of whole milk to kefir (about a teaspoonful).

After receiving the grains open the plastic packet and place the grains into 200ml of room temperature whole milk that has been placed into a plastic or glass jar. Cover the jar with a cloth or put the lid on the jar and let the contents stand at room temperature for approximately 24 hours depending on your taste. 48 hours will make a thicker, sourer kefir, 12 hours a thinner, sweeter kefir.

The temperature will effect how quickly the culture works. So during the warm summer months the kefir will ferment faster. A cooler temperature slows the fermentation down and makes a thicker kefir too. Some people like to ferment their kefir in the fridge, leaving it for 5 days or more to compensate for the much slower fermentation process.

When it's ready strain the kefir into a clean jar. While it's fermenting the kefir grains will float to the top of the milk along with any cream. It's a good idea to stir it gently with a wooden spoon to mix up the solids and liquids to make it easier to strain. The kefir culture produces a jelly like polysaccharide substance that develops around the grains as they grow, making it look 'gloopy'. It has unique properties and it's own name 'kefiran'. As you scoop out the grains you may find them coated with a gel like substance. This is the kefiran. Giving the kefir a good stir will distribute the kefiran in the kefir and it contributes to the thickness of the finished kefir After straining, the grains are placed straight back into a clean jar without washing them first. Fresh milk is added to the grains to make the next batch.

Recipe for EM-5 The ingredients to make EM-5 vary. However, a standard list of ingredients is given below. One could enhance the efficiency of EM-5 by the addition of organic matter having high quantities of antioxidants. These include garlic; hot peppers; Aloe Vera, Neem leaf, prunings of fruit trees, comfrey and other strong smelling herbs and grasses having medicinal value. These must be chopped or mashed prior to addition.

Preparation of EM-5 (1 Litre) The following list contains the ingredients for making standard EM-5 * * * * *

Water * Molasses Vinegar** Distilled spirits*** EM-1

*Clean water, free of chorine should be used. If the water is chlorinated then let the water stand for 24 hours in an open container, such as a bucket, cover with muslin to prevent dust or other contaminants going into the water. **Natural vinegar is preferred over artificial acids *** The cheapest form of alcohol should be used 1. Blend the molasses with hot not boiling water, ensuring complete dilution.

2. Add vinegar and spirits, followed by EM-1.

3. Pour the mixed solution into a container, which can be closed tightly, add the chopped vegative material into to this container. Close the lid tightly, and remove excess air, to enhance and create the necessary anaerobic condition.

4. Set the fermenter or aquarium thermostat at 20°C. Or store in a warm place (20°-30°C) pace, away from direct sunlight.

5. Release gas at regular intervals by partially opening the container and closing it again within a short time.

Note: EM-5 is ready for use when the production of gas has subsided. Usually after 7 days or so. Well prepared EM-5 has a sweet fruit smell, similar to that of ester.

Note: EM- 5 should be stored in plastic containers in a dark cool place, which has a uniform temperature. If plant material was used, these could be filtered out at this stage. EM- 5 should not be stored in refrigerators or exposed to sunlight. Most importantly it should be used within 3 months of preparation.

APPLICATION OF EM-5 EM- 5 is sprayed at dilutions of 1:500 or 1:1000 to wet the crop. Apply soon after seed germination or crop establishment, but before the incidence of pests and disease. Spray, at regular intervals. It is preferable that EM-5 is sprayed in the morning or after heavy rains.

Convenient EMA Recipe Activating EM-1 EM-1 should be activated by adding water and A+. (Liquid Cane Sugar) at the rate of 1:1:20 EM Activated Recipe: Use the following calculation to make 1 Litre of EM Active.

50 ml EM-1 50 ml Molasses (A+ Liquid Cane Sugar) 900 ml Water = 1 litre EM Activated (EMA) Method Always use clean equipment and chlorine free water (if the water is chlorinated then allow the water to stand for a few hours in an open container, if possible cover with muslin or similar material to prevent dust or other contaminants going into the water. Alternatively Take a 1litre measure Half-fill the measure with hot water from a boiled kettle or heat a bottle of mineral water Dissolve 50 ml of A+ in the measure, stirring well.

Stir in 50 ml of EM-1 solution.

Pour the solution into a plastic container Seal the top with a lid. An airlock as used by winemakers is ideal.

Place the container in a warm, not hot place to ferment. You will need to release the produced fermentation gas by loosening the lid every day, or just leave the lid slightly loose so that the gas can escape.

NOTE: EMA has a shorter life that EM-1. It is best used within 4-8 weeks; EMA should not be expanded further.
