Alone on a Beach

I slept for awhile that night in my hut, the wind was cold of the water. My clothes were drying outside and I was dressed in my warm winter jacket, that had luckily been in my suitcase when I rst had gotten stuck on this deserted Island. I woke up to the smell of smoke, and in the distance I could see a small ship burning. Boats had come by often but never close enough to truly see me. Something was different about this boat though, it was small and wooden and it was in ames. In the distance I saw a gure appear from the side of the boat and jump into the water. After twenty to thirty minutes this gure had reached the shore. It was a large strong man who wore a swimsuit as well as a swim shirt. We stared at each other for a couple of seconds until we began to talk. At rst talking about how long I had been there and then talking about how I had gotten there. I told the man that I had been venturing on my boat alone until it had ran out of gas and I had no electronic device that had a signal to get anyone's attention. My boat began to drift to this island, until it had sprung a leak in the bottom due to hitting the ground, it later sunk and I swam the rest of the way to the island. This would be the 2nd month I had been stranded on this island. No one would be coming to look for me because I didn’t talk to many people. I was a rich man who had no intention of sharing my wealth with anyone and most of my family had been dead.

I told the man my story and he laughed, this surprised me. How could someone laugh at my situation when I’ve been stuck here for two months and that he was likely in the same situation. Although the next thing that he said surprised me the most he said “I can get you home but is going to cost you a high price.” I proceeded to tell him that I would give him many of the millions of dollars in my bank account to him. He didn’t want the money though, he told me I had to donate three quarters of my wealth to the less fortunate. That was at least 300 million dollars, I looked at him weirdly. I said yes, still til this day I have no idea why he told me to do this. It had changed my life though, today I am still a rich man but I gave to the poor and now I have a family of my own. Without the guidance of this man in this weird situation, I would still be the lonely broken man I was ten years ago.

Blades yellow in winter Are green in spring With shades of brown and verde Throughout summer and autumn.

As other works of God’s hand form a Constant Cycle of fades and rebirths dependent on the changing seasons, Grass remains - Changed, yet Intact.

Though white akes of dandruff may envelop And leaves brittle as toast may suffocate - Grass persists - prevails and endures.

Trees of pine carry the same dark hue all year long Offering shade through stormy nights - and warm afternoons alike.

As snow melts away, new branches grow from soft, wet needles.

Mid-October they are a rustic orange, sharp to the touch.

Roses are as bright as they are temporary - Weeping Pinyon as tall as it is permanent.

Tulips are terri c Roses Romantic Honeysuckle’s Heavenly Herb’s - a remedy, Aster’s astounding Orchids Outstanding Perennials pleasant Puccoon’s a present Dahlia’s delicious Ivy’s vicious Though some are worse None are perverse

Yet these diverse smells are undone as the cold sets in.

They shrivel when soil thaws, Whither with the gusting wind.

Though through it all blades last, those blades of grass.

Trees keep their roots, and pines their hue.

These plants - though special they are not - Or at least not how they are seen - Stand the ultimate test, so thus - they must have great ability, Perhaps not to thrive, but always to survive.

But She Survived

by Meaghan Woods Grade 9 She planted orchids.

Elegant and simple.

She looked at them every day And found herself uncontrollably smiling.

She had found the last piece of the puzzle.

And of course neither the orchids or she was perfect But together they were happy.

There was no limit of their love for eachother.

Sadly cold winters don’t care for love And so the orchids died.

But their love stayed frozen in time.

Then she found a rose bush Each flower rich in its red color.

Tending to the beautiful bush, It pricked her and teared apart her delicate hands That are now covered in scars.

Diligent and strong she went back to the rose bush day after day Giving it all the water and love that she could bear.

But time passed and the rose bush was not satisfied.

So the buds stopped blooming The leaves began to die.

And all that was left was a pile of sticks and thorns.

So she came upon the daisies.

A small patch of light and life So soft and so sweet And so careful with the wounds the rose bush had left behind.

She protected the daisies and they shielded her from the evil of the world.

Now, she saw less of the sadness that consumed her past And more of the happiness flooding her future.

But the daisies were not invincible.

Ridded with disease and holding on to all the time they had left living, They too passed.

And she who had found happiness again Was overflowing with sadness of another lost lover.

Yet there’s one fact by which I swear:

I don’t deny that they are clever They know how to spell whether Or weather in the proper context.

But because of their ego They think that they can veto Any other voice as “Complete Nonsense.”

Knowledge is good And Wisdom is better And having both is superb.

But give knowledge to the vain There will be yet another great stain That will leave it’s bitter mark on this earth.

Anonymous Submission from Sci-Fi and Fantasy Literature Class The year is 4076. Younghouse and his followers have come to Earth from a planet far far away. They are wearing nothing except fedoras and gun holsters. They are carrying packs that contain technology the world has never seen before. Quickly, the followers started to pile in on their UFO’s. Havoc spread throughout the entire globe. The White House went into Defcon 1, and these foreign creatures were threatening the safety of the inhabitants of Earth. Elon Musk XLVII had activated his safety evacuation plan to ee the Earth which was initially created by his ancestor, Elon Musk. The original plan was to move any remaining humans to Mars, but after many discoveries over the past 2000 years, another “Earth” had been discovered: Earth 2.0. The new plan consisted of moving all the remaining humans to Earth 2.0, but Earth 2.0 was too small for the original population of Earth. So when the followers came, only the elite humans and few normal citizens were allowed to leave.

These elite humans consisted of doctors, scientists, soldiers, and world leaders. Their job was to create a new Earth that would have the same standard of living as the original and by bringing a few citizens they planned on continuing the legacy of the human race.

At rst, Earth 2.0 was a steady refugee planet for the past inhabitants of the rst Earth. An election took place to decide on a new leader of the planet. For a while, previous world leaders gathered and discussed the future of Earth 2.0 and how to deal with the followers Nick Barga decided on creating a New World Army to in ltrate Amerath Prime, home of Younghouse and the followers. There was a scarcity of resources and it was becoming di cult to fend o the small incoming attacks on the new Earth. Due to the limited amount of resources and constant con ict Nick Barga made an executive decision to launch an attack on the followers.. It was time to end it once and for all.

Throughout Earth’s history there was never a con ict that was going to be this big.

Nick Barga appointed two heads of the New World Army since he was not going to be attending this attack.

At last, it was time to send in the troops. Nick Barga had been giving motivational speeches for the past few days. A re needed to be lit inside of the New World Army in order to motivate the troops before the big battle. The ships were loaded up and ready for lift o . The frontlines of ships had taken o with the remaining army behind them. The leader, with a sly smirk on his face, looks back at Earth 2.0 and clicks a trigger that creates a ery ball, of what was left of Earth 2.0, behind. Paul only had one mission left and that was to get to Amerath Prime safely. The leader, Paul, was able to create a rebel tribe that was going to side with Younghouse and his fellow followers. In order to join them, Paul had to make sure the human race was no longer in existence.

“It was almost December, and Jonas was beginning to be frightened.”

It was almost December, and Jonas was beginning to be frightened. Jonas lived in a dystopian society where every December 30 teens are chosen. Every person the age of 15- 22 has to go to the place where they are going to chose the names. No one knows where these 30 chosen teens go, but the one thing that everyone knows is that none of them come back home. This society has been crumbling because of problems within and problems with other societies. The society isn't what it used to be. Most of the people living her are in the lower class. They are facing daily problems trying to survive. However, there is a sliver of population that is wealthy and rules the society. Every December they host a draft where they choose 30 to go somewhere but no person knowns.

It is the day when 30 teens/young adults get picked and are sent to a place will they will never come back home. Jonas is very nervous. As he walks to the main plaza he is afraid that he never be able to see his family again. Jonas goes to the place were 30 names will be chosen at random. People from the age of 15-22 will be sent to this place. There Jonas waited desperately for all the names to be read. One by one the names were picked and read out loud. When they nally got the the nal pick, Jonas was relieved, because he believed there was no chance they he were the last pick. However, when they read the name on the paper, Jonas heart stopped. They had read his name and have told him to come up front. They gathered all the 30 and took them to a building. There they were sent on a bus. As they got on the bus Jonas thought what where he was going to be taken.

Around two hours passed, and Jonas was looking out the window of the yellow school bus.

They were in the middle of the deep jungle, trees all over the place and no sign of civilization. They got to a four wall cement building. As they walked inside they were told to set themselves from oldest to youngest. A woman and a man came inside and ask for the attention of the choosen 30. “ You 30 have been chosen, for a very special task.” They were told that they had been chosen to complete a task.

Two months passed of hard work. Jonas and the others were being trained survival skills and ghting skills. They didn’t know why they were being trained, but no one asked and just did what they were told. The day had come for the 30 to leave this building and go out into the jungle. They were each given a knife and a gun which they should carry at all times.

Jonas and the others were told they had to cross the jungle to try and go to a place where everything is good. However, this wasn’t a simple. Jonas crossed through the deep jungle and he was faced with many obstacles. Strange creatures would attack the group and the natural conditions of the jungle didn’t help the situation. After 2 weeks of walking in the deep jungle, 23 of the 30 were alive. The others had either died of starvation or by being attacked by these strange creatures. Jonas was still alive, but he was tired, hungry and afraid. They kept walking in the jungle for 5 more days when they nally reached a tall

cement wall. As they approached this wall they saw guards on the top. As the doors opened they were greeted by a man around 40 years old. As they walked passed the walls, around 20 feet in thickness, they were found with a beautiful view. As they looked up they saw grass elds, small houses, and mountains in the distance. Everything seemed perfect. They had nally reached the place they were told. There they were found in a perfect society.

Everything was good here. Those who survived had the privilege to be here. However, for the rest of the people back in the other society, they were still passing through a hard time.

The society had made this system to be able to allow young men and woman to be able to start a new life and create a better world for the incoming generations.

Underwater Society

Global Warming Crisis Global warming got so extreme that all of the ice and snow melted. People had no choice but to live underwater.Society also started to crumble because of the high debate on what actions government should take. Some countries who were too poor to a ord materials to dwell underwater died out. 20 years later, people are successfull y living under water but have many laws due to safety issues.

Motto: Rise above the water Rules: No one can get too close to the edge of dome so it doesn’t get damaged. Fines to long jail time will be faced depending on intent ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ●

If you crack the dome or come close, you drown You can’t leave the dome and if you do, you stay there No asking the Scavengers anything about the outside world If caught asking or talking about it, you will have to do hard labor and unknowingly brainwashed a er repeated o ence Everyone must have the same opinions on important topics and will be unknowingly brainwashed if not Everyone must do their assigned chores, if not they will be punished Take a lot of precautions to not get sick-- lots of vitamin C everyday, hand sanitizer If someone gets sick they have to go into quarantine Everyone must be kind to each other and follow all the rules People can only have 1 child

Government ● ● ● ●

The government is made up of elders and people who founded the society The elders get to vote for the new government so the government stays the way it’s suppose to go They all vote on what rules they want to enforce The elders are on the top and have the most power, then the scavengers,

and then everyone else is below them.

Religion Worship Gaia the Earth Goddess. This is because they have hope that their world will one day get out of the water again. They perform ceremonies with plants and other earthy materials. Religion is not a huge part of their life and they only worship once a month.

Conditioning For young kids, they just drill whatever they want into their minds until they believe it. For older people, government scares them by saying they will put them outside of the dome to drown. If this doesn’t work, the government brainwashes the people to ensure cooperation.
