Sleek renovated workplace and new faces make for a fresh environment
In 2016, Brett Wooffindin took the business leap and purchased into the accounting firm, Lawson Avery in Cole Street, Masterton. He is currently the co-director with Jennifer Martin. The pair set about looking at the long-established practice and decided the location, nestled beside the Wairarapa Times-Age, was a perfect site, but the 1970s building needed a re-vamp. With the staff heartily behind them, they have achieved streamlined and fresh new offices, which Brett says are a joy to work within. Brett is well-known and highly respected for his cloud-based accounting work especially using Xero which clients have eagerly adopted with enthusiasm. He says Xero provides a ‘no surprises’ approach to tasks such as GST, budgeting and forecasting, payroll, asset management and up-to-date reporting. He is especially proud of Lawson Avery’s long and successful history and enjoys being involved in succession planning and establishing confidence for future generations. Brett is also enthusiastic about helping clients know their own businesses and be comfortably familiar with their finances and accounting software packages, now a necessary part of accounting. Lawson Avery has, as a result, introduced ‘walk in Wednesdays’ – one-to-one training sessions with their staff. It’s a free service for everyone, not just their clients, aimed at helping people feel computer and financially savvy. With new clients, the firm also offers a free set up and one-hour training session. “We want to educate people. We’ve seen how it helps those who have taken the time to learn.” Brett hails from a farming background in South Canterbury, and this experience is proving to be of great benefit to the firm’s 60 per cent rural client base. He studied at Lincoln University and graduated with a BCA majoring in Accounting and Business Management. He has worked in Wellington and London, before returning to New Zealand in 2011 and moving to Wairarapa in 2015. The other men of Lawson Avery, Rob, Boon and Rory join Brett. He, and his colleagues have young children so working in a familyfriendly environment is important to them all. When Richard and Dana Fleming were setting up their Tararua Refrigeration business, they wanted a catchy logo which was colourful and would make people notice them. Enter the colourful half sun/ half snowflake logo which has certainly become a familiar icon. It reflects the young and playful nature of the company and of the Flemings, who thrive on being professional – from the smallest vehicle aircon job, to an entire fit-out of a house and its heating and ventilation system. The couple live in Masterton with their three children and have established a showroom for Tararua Refrigeration in Pahiatua, where they discovered there was a gap in the market – home heating/ air-conditioning and refrigeration systems - whether that be servicing dairy farm units or building cooler and freezer rooms from scratch. That was two-and-a-half years ago, and the company now has four staff, including Richard, plus two people who do the administration, including Dana. Tararua Refrigeration always has four vehicles on the road and their services are called for throughout Tararua and Wairarapa – from Norsewood to the Cape Palliser coast. Over the past 10 years, heat pumps have become increasingly sophisticated and coupled with the building boom, they are a
mainstay of the business. They are stockists of Mitsubishi heat pumps. Smart vent ventilation and heat transfer systems are also popular, especially in new builds, which keep them busy. Tararua Refrigeration Services is dedicated to fulfilling customers’ practical needs and have a strong focus on communication, even offering tips and lessons on Facebook about how the industry runs and the professional role of each staff member. Taking the time and energy to explain stuff, that can seem a bit complicated to the average bod, typifies the approach of Richard and Dana. They strive to be transparent, informative, and upfront with product and service, and this shows in their great reviews and customer feedback.
