MEMO

IT TAKES MORE THAN ‘BONES’

“Y line of a poem by Maggie Smith (the poet, not the actress). Titled “Good Bones,” the poem notes with irony how a salesOU COULD MAKE THIS PLACE BEAUTIFUL,” DECLARES THE LAST

RITA GUARNA EDITOR IN CHIEF EDITOR@WAINSCOTMEDIA.COM

minded realtor “chirps on about good bones” while showing even the most ghastly houses. It’s true that the phrase is used a lot these days. But there’s a lesson here that goes beyond lingo. You want your house to be more than a structure with basic integrity and aesthetic potential, though you insist on that. You want it to be home. For that you have a vision, and likely you’ll retain an interior designer to bring talent, knowledge and experience to the task of executing that vision. In each issue of NJ HOME we tell the stories of such collaborations—the hiccups along the way as well as the home runs. “Bones” alone weren’t enough, for example, to make a 1940s center-hall colonial in Ridgewood the bright, lively abode it has become (page 64). But walls didn’t need to be moved either. Distinctive architectural touches stayed, while the previous dark bummer of a design scheme went out the window—and savvy designer Jennifer Pacca made those calls. She also prevailed on the woman of the house to accept, in an octagonal sunroom, a chandelier of green recycled glass that was advocated by the man. This turned out to be one of our occasional husband-gets-it-right stories. “I feel like it makes the whole room,” the wife now says of the chandelier. For the dining room in a 1950 colonial in South Orange, our writer tells us on page 42, designer Sarah Storms respected “the home’s traditional bones” and brought out their glory. But the bones didn’t do the whole job, and in one respect they posed a challenge: The ceiling was only 8 feet high, so Storms created a more spacious impression “by contrasting the glossy white millwork against the metallic, navy-blue grasscloth wallpaper.” No bones about it, certain pages of this issue will call out to those with particular passions. Want a home with a turret? See page 46. Beach living if you prefer it? Page 26. A door that won’t be a bore? Page 80. A wooden kitchen floor? Page 28. We even offer, on page 24, tips for making sure your home helps you stay healthy this winter instead of the opposite. Take it from me: You can make your place beautiful. Keep turning to NJ HOME for inspiration.

THE LEE JOFA LEGACY

Since 1823 (nope, not a typo), Lee Jofa has been a leader in the textile industry, creating trims, rugs, wallcoverings and fabrics in stunning British-inspired prints. And to celebrate its 200th year, the brand has released an anniversary collection with all-new textiles featuring timeless designs that are contemporary enough for the modern world, yet honor its centuries of design. At NJ HOME, we’re all about shopping local, but there’s no harm browsing chain stores too. Three have recently opened new locations in the Garden State: Ashley Furniture made its debut this fall in Union at 1701 Morris Ave., bringing the company’s census of New Jersey stores to 22, so now Union County folks can shop the chain store’s stylish furniture and home décor. Crate & Barrel (pictured) has opened an outlet store in Mercer County’s Lawrenceville, located in the Mercer Mall on Route 1. Here you’ll find discounted furniture and décor from the brand and its sister brands, the ultra-modern CB2 and family-friendly Crate & Kids. If a new kitchen is on your wish list, check out the brand-new Signature Kitchen Suite “Skyline Showroom” located within the Englewood Cliffs headquarters of its parent company, LG (a South Korean firm originally called Lucky-Goldstar). Go to 111 Sylvan Ave. to shop the brand’s full range of high-end appliances. Also on tap for this new location are cooking demos, interactive tutorials and more immersive experiences.

Congrats to Essex County’s own Noel Gatts, designer and owner of Bloomfieldbased beam&bloom Interiors, who’s been tapped as the host of HGTV’s newest home improvement show, What’s Wrong With That House? She joins home inspector extraordinaire Joe Mazza of Home Inspector Joe on the series that will help homeowners in Northern New Jersey uncover issues with their homes. Mazza will handle the nitty gritty— mold, asbestos, water damage, structural problems, etc.—and then Gatts comes in to redesign the new-andimproved space. “We hope our audience understands our love for the Northeast, recognizes the authenticity of our work and learns a lot about home maintenance, renovation and design,” Gatts tells NJ HOME. “I’m grateful to be a part of the HGTV family.” Catch What’s Wrong With That House? DECEMBER HOME SALES

Looking to start the new year in a new home? Consider these New Jersey real estate statistics of singlefamily homes from a year ago in December while you’re scoping the market this season:

3,156

New listings in December 2022, down nearly 24 percent from the total in December 2021.

MUST-READS

Ralph Lauren: A Way of Living (Rizzoli New York, $75) commemorates the 40th anniversary of the iconic American fashion designer’s first home collection. It’s filled to the brim with stunning photographs of homes outfitted in his trailblazing designs (including a glimpse into his own stylish homes in Manhattan, Jamaica and Colorado). Any true lover of fashion or home design won’t be able to resist browsing these pages for inspiration. Designer Heidi Caillier believes the home should be an enclave of one’s memories, a glimpse into one’s personality and a welcoming space. That’s the vibe readers will get from her debut book, Memories of Home: Interiors (Rizzoli New York, $60). Through pattern mixing, neutral hues and a juxtaposition of masculine and feminine touches, Caillier’s projects are warm and inviting, yet somehow feel effortless. Famed designer Mario Buatta died in 2018, but his legacy lives on in Mario Buatta: Anatomy of a Decorator (Rizzoli New York, $42). Written by Emily Evans Eerdmans, his protegée, this book highlights a few final projects of the “Prince of Chintz” while offering readers a master class on how to “Buattafy” your space. Besides completed spaces, the pages abound with glimpses into Buatta’s creative process, from scrapbooks spanning his career to conversations with clients to his inspirational mood board.

YOU’RE IN CHARGE

If you don’t already own an electric vehicle, you may be considering bringing home a new Tesla, Rivian or other EV in the near future. EVs are filled with luxury amenities and are more fuel efficient and generally less expensive to maintain than their gas-powered counterparts. But they run on electricity, and you need to keep them charged. You can power up at a public charging station, but setting one up at home can guarantee that you’re always ready to roll. Here’s what to know about setting up a charging station: • Why you need it: Public charging stations aren’t convenient when you’re already at home. Plus, the fees and surcharges to use them vary, while the electricity rates at home are predictable. • What you need: A level 1 charger can run off a regular 120-volt household outlet, but the charge rate is slow, getting about two to five miles per hour. A level 2 charger runs off a 240/208-volt outlet, which usually requires installation by a licensed electrician. A one-hour charge with this equipment will add 10 to 20 miles to the car’s range. A permit may be required to install a new 120- or 240-volt outlet and upgrade your home’s circuit breaker. • Where to install: An EV charger should be installed on the same side that will face the vehicle’s charge port or as close as possible. The average charge cord is about 20 feet, so chargers should be mounted accordingly and be within your home’s wi-fi network.

We know the chances of getting sick increase during the colder months—windows are closed and we spend more time indoors, so viruses get passed around more easily. And the mess adds up after the holidays. “From dried pine needles scattered on the floor, to rogue glitter and unseen dust, there is a lot to attend to,” according to The Maids, a cleaning service with branches throughout New Jersey. “While we typically associate seasonal cleaning with spring, there are some home re-sets that are perfectly fit for a winter deep clean.” Below are a few extra cleaning steps you can take for your home in the winter to help minimize the risk of sickness for you and your family: • Wipe down radiators with a damp cloth and a spray cleaner to minimize dust accumulation. • Clean carpets regularly, either on your own or via a professional carpet cleaner. This means vacuuming rugs, but also shaking them out outside at least once per quarter to get rid of dust and bacteria. • Run your curtains through a washing machine—depending on their fabric type, of course—about twice a year to limit pollen and smells that tend to build up there. • Wash blankets, pillowcases and duvet covers at least once per season in the washer and dryer. This will make them not only cleaner, but comfier too! • Pay special attention to high-touch areas such as countertops, toilets, faucets and doorknobs, where bacteria tend to fester. You can clean these areas with a damp cloth and a little disinfectant spray.

THE GUIDE

THEY’RE TEAMING UP

Womenswear designer Joseph Altuzarra (left) has forayed into furniture—kids’ furniture, to be exact. And his West Elm collaboration is what he calls a “love letter” to his two young daughters. The ethereal, astronomy-themed, gender-neutral collection features 42 items, including furniture, textiles and decorative accessories, many of which feature hot-air-balloon and starry-sky designs hand-drawn by Altuzarra himself. Shop the collection at any of West Elm stores’s or at westelm.com/josephaltuzarra. This past spring, Ohio-based, high-end furniture designer Abner Henry teamed up for a collection with the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Their latest iteration though pays homage to other places beyond New York City. Each item in the 45-piece set features ornate details and gorgeous curves, an ode to architecture around the world. Check out the Stowe bookcase that resembles the Coliseum, or the Ferro cabinet inspired by Manhattan’s skyline. Items can be customized with your choice of woods and metals directly from the manufacturer, starting at $7,000. Need an excuse to spend more time at your home bar? Sheila Bridges’s new collaboration with Williams-Sonoma and WilliamsSonoma Home is just what the doctor ordered. Featuring her famous Harlem Toile de Jouy pattern, Bridges’s new set of barware includes glasses, napkins, ice buckets, cocktail shakers and a serving tray, among other must-haves. The collection also features linens, pillows, serving ware and framed art in the same iconic print. Shop the items at williams-sonoma.com.

LIFE OF THE PARTY

Throwing the year’s best bash doesn’t always require a party planner. But do check out these expert tips from Aimee Petersen, owner and event planner at Wyckoff-based The Perfect Shindig: • Settle on a theme. Establish how you want your party to look and feel. “Look around your home for inspirational pieces that can set the tone… then build upon it and shop for filler items to complete the look,” Petersen suggests. Set yourself up for success by writing up a well-planned todo list well ahead of time. “You should almost walk yourself through every step of the evening and make a ‘task’ to conquer at each stage.” • Attend to detail. To really wow the crowd, carry out your motif in all elements of the design, from the tablescape to the decorations to the cocktails. “Make it no secret what the theme is,” she says. “Make sure there are elements of it hanging from the ceiling, on the tables, the printed menus, the invitation.” Consider floral centerpieces that match the color palette, or linens that bring in your pattern, for example. Petersen also suggests layering when building out your tablescape to add different elements and textures for visual interest. • Serve great food. You don’t need a five-course sit-down dinner to impress, but what you serve should be memorable and tasty. A cocktail-style party means you can serve just appetizers. Bonus? Your guests can walk around and mingle as they please—and they won’t be too stuffed for dessert. • Add a personal element. A signature cocktail is a fun addition to a party at your home, says Petersen. “Make it something you love.” Our planner also suggests decorating the table with custom party favors that guests can take home. “This always makes guests feel thought of and special.”

LUXURY LIVING

Looking to invest in a new home in New Jersey in 2024? Three new upscale communities are opening in the Garden State in the coming months: • Atlantic Club in Long Branch. Beachside living can become your all-year-long reality in this new residential complex at the Shore. This luxury building—even the lobby is wrapped in gold—features 132 one- to five-bedroom residences with floor-to-ceiling windows, many of which have unobstructed ocean views and wraparound terraces. Inspired by Miami décor, condos here also feature white oak flooring, recessed lighting, state-of-the-art appliances, custom cabinetry and designer bathroom fixtures. Pricing runs from $1.12 million to $5.95 million; the building opens in 2025. More info: theatlantic-club.com. • Toll Brothers at Canter Square in Manalapan. This Monmouth County enclave will include 224 two-story townhouses with modern, open floor plans ranging from 2,274 to 2,374+ square feet. Each home has three to four bedrooms, two to four bathrooms and a one- or twocar garage, with prices starting at $700K. More info: tollbrothers.com/ luxury-homes-for-sale/New-Jersey/Canter-Square. • Max on Morris in Morristown. If you’d prefer a Morris County rental, check out this brand-new complex at 175 Morris St. in Morristown. Amenities include in-unit washers and dryers, quartz countertops, tile backsplashes and luxury plank flooring throughout. Pets are welcome in all units, kitchen islands are available in some units and there are even 14 designated homes for residents with special needs. Leasing prices begin at $2,340 for studio, one-bedroom and two-bedroom apartments. More info: maxonmorris.com.

ASK THE EXPERTS

WOOD IF YOU COULD

A mopper wonders about kitchen-floor maintenance; connoisseurs seek art worth sleeping under; an enthusiast wants advice you can take to the banquette. I HAVE MY HEART SET ON WOOD FLOORS IN THE KITCHEN, BUT BECAUSE I LIKE TO MOP, ANY SUGGESTIONS AS TO THE MOST DURABLE WOOD AND FINISH?

Many factors should be considered when selecting the best wood floor for your kitchen: the look and color you are going for, your budget and performance. Different woods inherently have specific color undertones and grain patterns—for example, red oak has red undertones. The most durable species are hardwoods such as oak, maple and hickory. Solid wood planks are a great option because they can be sanded and refinished many times. Engineered wood may or may not be able to be refinished depending on the thickness of the top layer, and it has limitations on how many times it can be refinished. Solid wood is preferred for longevity and value. Any spills should be cleaned immediately. Prefinished wood floors have factory-applied finishes. A durable option for site-stained and -finished products is a polyurethane finish, which range from matte to satin and glossy. Matte provides a clean, contemporary style. If you prefer a little shine, satin is more subtle than a high-gloss. Matte and low-gloss hide scratches better than high-gloss. Remember, your mop should be damp so as not to saturate your wood floor. —Judi Crook, ASID, CID, Kaleidoscope Interior Design; kidesignshop.com WE HAVE A HIGH HEAD-

BOARD AND ARE WONDERING ABOUT A STATEMENT ART

PIECE OR PIECES FOR ABOVE IT. SUGGESTIONS?

Here are some tips to consider when selecting and arranging art above your headboard: • Select a piece of art or a collection of items that resonates with you. It could be a painting, a photograph, a vintage mirror or an antique architectural element. • The size of the art should be proportional to the size of the headboard and the wall space above it. Working with 50 to 80 percent of the headboard’s width is a good rule of thumb. This ensures that the art doesn’t overwhelm the space or appear too small. • Place the art 8 to 10 inches above the top of the headboard. This height is visually pleasing and creates a balanced look. However, this can vary depending on the overall height of the headboard and the ceiling height. • If you opt for a grouping, odd numbers often work better than even— three or five items, for example. Ensure that the spacing between the pieces is consistent. Experiment with different arrangements, such as a symmetrical grid or an asymmetrical cluster, to find the look that suits your taste. Don’t forget that the art above your headboard should be something you love waking up to and going to bed with every day. —Virginia Tesi, Allied ASID, Tesi Design Inc., Interiors & Cabinetry; tesidesign.com

I’M ADDING A BANQUETTE TO THE BREAKFAST ROOM AND PREFER NOT TO DO A BUILT-IN. WHAT ARE MY OPTIONS BESIDE USING CHAIRS

ON ONE SIDE OF THE TABLE?

SOFA? LOVE SEAT? SUGGESTIONS?

While a built-in banquette can elevate a space and make it feel finished, it’s not the only way to achieve the “look.” The options for ready-made or semi-custom furniture pieces that appear custom have come a long way in the past few years. West Elm and Ballard Designs both have modular systems that you can specify to get as close to your custom measurements as possible with their various pieces. When specifying these for clients, we consider the same things as if we were building in the space—comfort and durability are key. The pitch of the back of the bench is as important as the depth of the seat, and that relationship is what creates comfort ultimately. Make sure you chose a durable fabric in a forgiving color. While flax and creams can be aesthetically pleasing even in a performance material, I would be mindful of the family’s level of wear and tear. Performance vinyls or cleanable fabrics such as Perennials or Crypton are your best bet. Make sure you leave room for your guests to shimmy in and out of the banquette, and don’t make any side too long, as people don’t like to line up more than three in a row. (Two seats per side are ideal.) —Alexa Harris Ralff, Associate ASID, AHR Designs; ahrdesigns.com

TABLE TALK

DESIGN by STYLED BY STORMS

PHOTOGRAPHY by AIMEE RYAN TEXT by NAYDA RONDON

In a confident designer’s hands, features of a South Orange dining room that could have been problems become pluses instead.

C Sarah Storms of Maplewood-based Styled by Storms was aiming to conjure for the dining room of her clients’ home in South Orange.

42 NJHome

ALM, CONTEMPORARY, COMFORTABLE. THAT’S THE ATMOSPHERE

Result: three Cs out of three. “My clients wanted a beautiful dining room full of color and comfort for family dinners and larger holiday gatherings,” says Storms, adding that as repeat clients, they felt comfortable letting her take the lead. “The trust has already been established; it allows you to jump right in and propose ideas that may be a little out of the ordinary.” Employing her trademark color and pattern mixing, Storms set about connecting the dining room—centrally located within the 1950 center-hall colonial—to the rest of the main floor, where blue is the ruling color of choice. Storms leaned into the homeowners’ attraction to coastal blues and whites by incorporating those colors into the space, starting with the metallic navy blue grass cloth from York Wallcoverings, which she paired with the original-to-the home millwork newly painted in Benjamin Moore White Heron. Respecting the home’s traditional bones—dentil crown molding, chair railing, fluted casing trim, 6-inch baseboards—Storms’s design played off and enhanced these elements, elevating the style to another level of casual chic. She incorporated large-scale art, such as a 36-inch-by-48-inch framed Ka’iuliani print by Hayley Mitchell, to make a big design statement. Storms also felt strongly about the bold choice of the Bernhardt sideboard, which is artistically carved and overlaid with German silver. “It could have made some people uncomfortable, but my clients wanted to go for it,” she says. Given the intentionally minimalist aesthetics, it was essential that “There is something fresh and elevated, but still comfortable, about this room,” says designer Sarah Storms of the dining space she created for the owners of a South Orange center-hall colonial. Because it involved no construction, the project, completed in fall 2022, took only four months to finish.

Displayed in a oneof-a-kind blown glass vase, soft-petal blossoms offer a visual haiku of delicate beauty. Opposite: The dry bar’s stunning white lacquer console from Bernhardt with overhead custom chrome and tempered glass bistro shelving proves that it doesn’t take much space to entertain in grand style. every single element enhance and complement the design. “I fell in love with this carved sideboard,” Storms declares. “It is absolutely stunning in person. It’s incredibly unique, but somehow, with the German silver finish, there is a level of sophistication and subtle glamour that works within a family home.” The room’s most challenging aspect turned out to be among its most rewarding. “This room has an 8-foot ceiling height,” the designer says. “So the question became how to make the space feel taller and more expansive. We did that by contrasting the glossy white millwork against the metallic navy-blue grass cloth wallpaper. That drew the eye up and created the illusion of desired proportions.” Also luring the gaze upward, the Talia Linear chandelier from Visual Comfort is a standout. “Its blown glass globes act as much as sculptural art as they do a light source,” Storms says. “It’s the ultimate intersection of form and function. “There is nothing more exciting than an object that satisfies multiple desires,” she adds. “Sculptural art adds a different layer to a room, and this chandelier has interesting grooved glass globes clustered to create an almost cloud-like effect.” Artful drapery also maximizes the design impact, contributing an organic counterpoint to the sleek metallic surfaces. “The shibori linen fabric has some shine and gorgeous shades of blue,” says Storms. “It adds softness and, most important, a layer of pattern.” Anchored by an Almira area rug from Jaipur Living, the warm-hued Marley dining table by Universal and curved Hawkins dining chairs by Four Hands impart a lighthearted vitality and modernity to the space. The Global Views mirror reflects the contemporary chic vibe as it adds a sense of depth and dimension. All the carefully curated pieces come together in harmonious style. “After the design, the dining room integrated with the other spaces on the main floor, even elevating them,” Storms says. “Calm and contemporary, it feels ready for any small or large gathering.”

MEDITERRANEAN MARVEL Inspired by Italy, a North Caldwell couple gets a home fit for the family of a Renaissance nobleman. DESIGN by DESIGN MACS

PHOTOGRAPHY by MIKE VAN TASSELL TEXT by DONNA ROLANDO

A bedroom, new-construction North Caldwell home actually resembles one. The owners, of Italian descent, wanted a

NYONE CAN CALL THEIR HOME A CASTLE, BUT A FIVE-

Mediterranean influence that would remind them of vacations in their ancestral land. And building their very own turret gave them old-world-style rotund rooms, while towering ceilings and marble created a grand effect. “I wanted that old stone European look which you get when you go to Italy,” says the lady of the house, the mother of two young daughters. “I wanted a large feel, and I like the idea that it reminds me of a castle.” This was a great transition for a couple who had lived on West New York’s waterfront, but their vision required a clean slate and the right team, with Marissa Sauer of Design MACS. As Boxtree Construction started work in 2020, Sauer seized the opportunity to guide both look and functionality early on. Perhaps no place captures the grandeur of the couple’s quest more than the great room, visible from the Juliet balcony The great room in this five-bedroom North Caldwell new build lives up to its name with the drama of 19-foot ceilings, floor-to-ceiling silk draperies and even a Juliet balcony.

courtesy of 19-foot-high coffered ceilings. With great attention to detail, Sauer treated the ceilings to handmade Maya Romanoff wallpaper in natural silica mica. “It kind of sparkles,” she says, especially in the glow of another lofty eye-catcher. That’s the crystal-and-iron chandelier shaped as a gigantic orb, inspired by 19th century physicist Foucault’s gyroscope. To emphasize height, silk drapes by The Shade Store run from floor to ceiling while motorized shades add ease. A trio of contemporary mirrors by Uttermost also highlights the drama above. Another accent is the cast-stone fireplace, which Sauer describes as “subtle but beautiful and striking.” The challenge in the great room was providing seating for gatherings while keeping it soft and delicate with family-minded

NJH.su22.north caldwell.indd 48

performance fabrics. The solution: Instead of a chunky sectional, Sauer provided twin velvet-feel armchairs and a woven sofa in neutrals as well as misty-blue window benches, predominately Bernhardt. Stanton’s Silhouette rug in Greystone over hardwood grounds the scene. Since this “castle” is also home, snuggling was a priority accomplished with an off-white chaise, while navy velvet ottomans by Article prove fun and functional. This family is known to fill its castle with guests, so the open concept had to be “super-functional,” says the homeowner. With an easy-flow kitchen and dining room and a basement entertainment center, she says, “we could really host upstairs, downstairs, anywhere—and there’s a space for everyone.”

Making for hassle-free events is what Sauer calls “a most special moment,” an illuminated, glass-enhanced archway between the kitchen and dining room that acts as both storage and a serving station with bar sink and beverage fridge. Courtesy of the glass, there’s always a connection between these rooms and the guests enjoying them, the homeowner says. The rooms are further united by Maya Romanoff ’s polished silver ceiling wallpaper, a “trick to make the space a little bit cozier,” Sauer says. “In designing this kitchen, we wanted it to be really soft and classic and stand the test of time,” she explains. Custom cabinets in Benjamin Moore’s Decorator’s White are styled with glass and assorted hardware. Beauty meets durability in the lightly veined quartz countertops by Aurea Stone and icy-blue island chairs

by Bernhardt. Yet the real showstopper is the geometric mosaic featuring mother-of-pearl behind the Wolf range, which stands out against the Thassos subway backsplash. Like a cherry on a cake, the design is topped off with Eichholtz USA acrylic island pendants and a Visual Comfort two-tiered chandelier, both in polished nickel. In an octagon nook sun-kissed through bay windows, the kitchen dining area was meant to be special. But disappointment loomed when the table Sauer had planned to place there ended up discontinued. She tracked down the manufacturer in India and arranged for a custom piece. “It’s just gorgeous,” she says, describing its inlaid bone finish preserved with glass. Durability is built into the soft white chairs by Vanguard,

almost welcoming spills. The dining room rises to any occasion with a reclaimed wood table that goes from big to bigger. “Seating was the thing in this room,” Sauer says, describing inviting head chairs in damask and peacock seafoam green velvet as well as side chairs in velvet and leather—all custom. “We wanted to create in every room a pop of color and use beautiful textures and patterns and still consider durability,” the designer explains. The palette includes blues and green in artwork and blue velvet shades, while a custom rug by Kane Carpet lends texture. Chandeliers of wrought iron and recycled bottle glass by Currey & Company add a bit of intrigue and ornate sconces, an antique look. The designer took great pains to ensure that the fireplace

NJH.su22.north caldwell.indd 52

would command attention, consulting with the millworker on site to get the wood surround just right despite an angled wall. As for the home office, it had to be sophisticated and complement the rest of the house, so Sauer stuck to neutral tones but sprinkled in blues and soft silvers. The carved desk where the wife often works has delicate legs for femininity and joins an elegant dining chair. Of the faux hide layered over a wool rug, Sauer says: “If you want to sit and work and be barefoot, it’s cozy.” Other features are a “whimsical” chandelier with cutout ovals, silver silk Roman shades and soft-blue built-ins that hide a printer. The ceiling wallpaper in charcoal herringbone is an unexpected touch. Of the guest bedroom, Sauer says: “We wanted to make it feel

really special and luxe despite the fact that it’s not such a huge space.” The solution? Inspired by the millwork, she created an accent around the oatmeal upholstered bed and added “exquisite wallpaper” in seafoam. “To have this wallpaper detail really gives the oomph,” Sauer says, while silver silk drapes reflect luxury. The clever use of mirrors helped max the space as did petite nightstands bearing acrylic lamps. The couple looked to their master bedroom and bath for a five-star-hotel feel. The latter delivers with a cast-iron, claw-foot tub by Barclay that guarantees comfort in a cozy nook elevated by Carrara tile walls. To accomplish this, the homeowner, while nine months pregnant, made it her mission to test each tub, Sauer recalls. The winner not only was the

NJH.su22.north caldwell.indd 54

pinnacle of relaxation, but a “beautiful statement piece,” she adds. For a spa effect, custom bookshelves flanking the tub lift the spirits with candles. Marble is this room’s stone feature and problem solver at the same time. The designer united different areas in an elongated bathroom with Carrara and Thassos inlaid to mimic carpet. Then she let her dedication to detail carry the effect to the recessed ceiling. It may have been a challenge to create a castle where kids can be kids, but the couple can testify that the fabric has stood up to everything from chocolate to slime. In fact, homeowner “Mom” says, “It’s exactly what we had envisioned: bright, rustic but also able to bring our image to life.”

10/30/23 4:12 PM

NO TIME WASTED

A Montclair couple makes the redesign of their first suburban home the first order of business. DESIGN by MAZZA COLLECTIVE

PHOTOGRAPHY by JACOB SNAVELY TEXT by DONNA ROLANDO

T Montclair to sit on the back burner. The ink had barely dried on a former Hoboken couple’s real estate contract in 2021 when they HERE WAS NO TIME FOR AN EXTENSIVE HOUSE REDESIGN IN

56 NJHome

started interviewing designers for the modern infusion they felt their ’30s Tudor-style home sorely needed. Kate Mazza, owner of Mazza Collectives in North Jersey, stood out for embracing their redesign vision: Cherish the rich wood beams, classic arches throughout the first floor—and especially the kitchen’s marble checkered floor—for character, but throw in modern elements to make the style their own. Like Montclair, which the couple prized as a beautiful blend of suburbia with city culture and convenience, this four-bedroom home would be its best as a mixture of old and new. “We knew we wanted something that would grow with us and at the same time be timeless,” homeowner Shayla says. Comfort, along with function, also had to be king, says husband William. “And we wanted an open bright concept,” he says. “We’re facing east, so we wanted to harness that with the colors and so forth.” But those colors would have to be neutral, Shayla adds. Also key for these proud parents of a 6-year-old son, a forever home would need natural fabrics with longevity. “They’re very stylish, neat and friendly so they wanted their home to feel tasteful and welcoming to their family and friends,” says Mazza, the designer they felt got their plan to a T. The challenge she faced is one common to the redesign of historic homes: deciding what to keep and what to eliminate. She notes that elements like the black-and-white checkered marble floor in the To keep historic elements of a 1930s Tudor-style home in Montclair, new owners didn’t want to compromise on style. The living room, pictured here with the sunroom just beyond, shows how modern elements, geometric shapes and dark-light contrasts can fit right in with old-fashioned charm.

kitchen and pantry, crystal door hardware and all the wood trim “really grounded everything new,” allowing her to introduce abstract art, tulip tables and other modern and geometric features for a transitional vibe. Though balance can be a trial, timing gave Mazza the luxury of a blank canvas. For inspiration she turned to that square marble flooring in the kitchen, which also retained original inset cabinets reborn in different shades of gray. Mazza intensified the natural light with polished granite counters by Stone Plus and a backsplash of glossy ceramic tile by Wayne Tile, the latter in squares like the floor. A stainless-steel hood over the Viking stove is subdued so as not to steal the show from the high-contrast marble. Completing the look at the island are a singular milk-glass pendant by Ballard Designs and France & Son stools in a warm wood. The motivational marble flooring continues in the butler’s pantry, also sharing the kitchen’s granite counters and tile backsplash. Yet Mazza also masters individuality for this drink/coffee bar zone with cabinets painted in Benjamin Moore’s Enchanted Forest and the natural influence of an oversized glass vase with branches. For “a little cheeky personality,” there’s a Fornasetti collectible too. Shayla’s favorite spot is the dining room, which changed not a bit from Mazza’s original concept— the couple liked it so much. “She got us to think outside the box for things we ended up falling in love with,” Shayla says, describing the round lacquer-top table as “very communal.” Arches in the artwork complement the arches in architecture and the antiquebrass, double-shaded chandelier by Shades of Light harmonizes with

brass knobs in the adjacent butler’s pantry. For further unity, Mazza used mid-century wooden chairs by France & Son as in the sunroom and repeats circular shapes in the lighting and custom wool rug by J&S by Stark, she explains. The living room owes its transformation largely to the fireplace, once “just very old-fashioned, almost a non-focal point” with stone blocks and wood, Mazza says, but now a riveting marble surround with Revere Pewter-painted millwork. From the fireplace to the rectangular white Italian weave sofas by RH, Mazza created an ode to geometric shapes and high contrasts like the White Dove walls against the deep trim. The gray-and-ivory rug over original wood “adds a lush texture like a beautiful sweater,” she says, while the pillows with elements like gold and alpaca wool lend personality as does the abstract art. As a “nice balance” to the fluffy RH Cloud sofas, there’s a stainless steel and glass coffee table, which finds as style companions tulip-base tables by Arteriors. Peeking through the archway to the entry foyer one can admire how under-stairwell space came to life with a custom bench by Keith Gerardi that doubles as art, drawing its support from a sphere of gold resin that seems to melt onto the floor. All that, and a great place to change shoes. Sometimes a designer must be a master of illusion, and that was the case with the sunroom, which Mazza describes as a “very cozy space.” Case in point, a floating window bench which draws texture from patterned pillows was custom made to fit over a potential eyesore, the existing HVAC. Playing with the power of perception once more, the contemporary high-low-pile area rug makes the space “feel longer

and larger,” she says. Mid-century modern is embraced in the caning seat chairs and polished marble top tulip table by Noir. One of the few rooms that was gutted to make way for something entirely new was the master bath. Now it’s easily William’s favorite room to relax in with the soaking tub, radiant heated floors and dual showerheads. Yet it did not come without some “risk-taking,” which for Will was the wallpaper. Mazza says the Phillip Jeffries vinyl lends a “hotel-like contemporary quality that I balanced with the charcoal herringbone floor by Wayne Tile and the vintage colorful rug.” With lavender and peach, this 100-yearold rug from 1stdibs reflects a traditional persona, like the milk-glass sconces, while the his-and-hers vanity with polished Carraramarble top has a crystal connection to the door hardware. Mazza’s mission in the primary bedroom was a “luxurious and peaceful vibe,” which she accomplished by layering lots of neutral textures like the cushy wool carpet and cotton bedding with linen and faux leather headboard by Universal. “It was beautiful in its simplicity,” she says of the room where she contrasted ivory carpet by J&S and White Dove walls with dark gray lamps on wooden nightstands and silk pillows in gray and ink. One by one, Mazza crossed off each item on these eager homebuyers’ extensive list, and they’re thrilled. “The job that Kate did was beyond our wildest expectations,” Will said. “I think it just really showed us we didn’t have to compromise. We could have a comfortable, luxurious home while still having respect for the 1930s Tudor style we have. It provides a warm atmosphere to raise our family.”

OVER THE WALL

Restoring liveliness to a gracious 1940s colonial in Ridgewood didn’t require moving walls—just imagination, aesthetic smarts and a few bold touches. DESIGN by JENNIFER PACCA INTERIORS PHOTOGRAPHY by MARCO RICCA TEXT by LESLIE GARISTO PFAFF

walls knocked down. To make a 1940s center-hall colonial in Ridgewood brighter, cheerier and more welcoming, an inspired cosmetic makeover turned out to be just the thing. When Karen Visco and her husband Ryan Hunter purchased the home in 2021, they saw it as “traditional,” and that was both good and bad. On the plus side, it was full of graceful architectural details, like wainscoting and dentil The once dark living room was given a bright makeover with an almost beachy feel, thanks to a sectional sofa in an off-white performance fabric and a greige fauxleather ottoman, both from Bernhardt, and blue touches in pillows, a throw, a Gabby upholstered chair and a pair of blue-andwhite lamps from Regina Andrew.

molding; on the minus, the décor tended toward the dark and drab. So the couple enlisted the aid of Wyckoff-based designer Jennifer Pacca to transform the home into an elegant but casual space that worked for their growing family—which included their then 2-yearold son, Jackson, who would be joined in 2022 by new brother Grayson. “We were looking to make the main living areas very comfortable and functional for us, while also sort of bringing in some more modern elements, some pops of color,” says Visco. Pacca chose a palette of whites and blues for those common areas, in part as a nod to the

East Hampton house the family had lived in just before moving to Ridgewood, but also to give the space a clean, airy, modern feel. In the living room, for instance, she painted the walls in Benjamin Moore’s Sea Salt, accented with Moore’s White Dove on the trim and framed the large windows with sheer open-weave curtains in a beige-and-gray weave. An off-white sectional sofa (upholstered in performance fabric) is enlivened with bright blue pillows and a blue-and-white throw. The dark-stained wood flooring might have come off as too dark, but because the pale area rug is so large, the floor hue serves helpfully to

This page: The Arteriors metal-and-glass bar cart echoes the sheen of the dining room wallpaper. As a counterbalance, the designer added white-painted Chippendale chairs from Worlds Away for a less formal feel.

emphasize its brightness. The dining room, where a gray Parsons-style table is flanked by Chippendale chairs and a buffet with Chippendale details sits against one of the walls, could have come off as overly formal, but Pacca struck a balance: “We tried to mix a dressier feel with something more casual,” she says. The chairs, for instance, are painted white to add a touch of the beach. The Chinoiserie wallpaper with its silver sheen, on the other hand, is decidedly dressy, and yet it balances the room rather than overwhelm it. Visco wasn’t instantly enamored of the print, afraid that it might come off as simply too much, but Pacca and her team assured her she’d like it when it was installed on the walls—and they

were right. “It’s stunning and so unexpected,” Visco says now. “I get so many compliments on it.” One of her favorite spaces in the house is the octagonal sunroom, another room with a beachy, modern feel thanks to deep blue walls against white trim and a grouping of white, clean-lined upholstered chairs. Again they’re balanced by an unexpected element: an elaborate chandelier of green recycled glass, and another touch that Visco wasn’t sure about until its installation. The design team (and her husband, who was already on board with it) begged her to trust them, and she’s very glad she did. “I feel like it makes the whole room,” she says. A CPA, Visco has an office in Manhattan, but she often works from home, so the design of her

Touches of green add to the outdoors-in ambience, in the embroidered linen window treatments from Romo and, most dramatically, an eye-catching chandelier of green recycled glass from Currey & Company. Opposite: One of two home offices in the house—this one for homeowner Karen Visco—is pretty in pink and white. Visco loved the playfulness of the sawhorse-style, glass-topped desk from Joss & Main the first time she saw it, and pops of hot pink, along with a funky collection of wall art, add to the room’s clear sense of play. When the silk floral fabric chosen for the curtains proved to be prohibitively expensive, the design team decided to use it just on the banding, and the effect is fun and fetching. This page: More fun—in the form of toned-down animal-print wallpaper, a daisy-shaped mirror from Uttermost and a pair of black-and-white stools from Renwil.

cause Karen wanted a nice Zoom background,” says Pacca. Initially, they’d planned to use the fabric on the curtains in their entirety, but the cost turned out to be prohibitive. Instead, Pacca suggested using it only on the banding, and the effect was stunning. “I think it would have been too much if we’d done the whole drape in the brighter fabric,” Visco says. “As is, it’s just perfect.” In fact, “perfect” sums up her feelings about the design as a whole. “What we love about the house,” says Visco, “is everything.”

home office was particularly important to her. “She wanted a space that would be pretty and bright and soft,” says Pacca. The softness derives from a white shag rug and a pale gray-and-white wallpaper, the brightness from a white sofa, a sawhorse-style desk with a clear glass top and numerous pops of hot pink, in everything from the playful art on the walls to a hot-pink throw pillow to the vertical floral bands that decorate the curtains on the window behind the desk. “We placed the desk in front of the window be-

and make a design statement that doesn’t require much space or much maintenance. Intrigued? Sliding barn doors used to be almost exclusively rustic, wooden or rattan companions to a modern farmhouse-style home. But today their aesthetics extend beyond that stereotype; consider a Shaker-style panel door for a traditional home, or even frosted glass with bold hardware for a homeowner who thinks modern. Almost like a piece of art, a sliding barn door creates a focal point in the room. Unlike swinging doors, they’re flush to the wall and run along a track; thus they’re space-savers, not requiring as much clearance as a regular door would. Consider a sliding bar door in your walk-in closet with a full-length mirror hung on

the back; to separate your kitchen from your pantry; or to disguise a less-than-neat mudroom or laundry area. (One room a barn door’s not for? That’d be the bathroom, where we all prefer the kind of opening-and-closing barrier that more securely guards privacy—by blocking sounds.) You’ll want a professional not only to install your sliding barn doors—for example, make sure you have a track at the top and the bottom to prevent the door from banging into the wall—but also to help you choose or design the right one for your space. Wood Touch in Pine Brook specializes in custom wooden barn doors, whereas a door shop such as Door Design Lab in Paramus and Pennsauken Township has them in various finishes, panel styles, colors and thicknesses. Possibilities abound, and you know what they say: When one door closes…
