Toxic fire starter off to court Simon Bloomberg The man responsible for lighting a fire that sent a large plume of toxic black smoke over Richmond on Monday is going to court. Fire crews from Richmond and Appleby as well as Tasman District Council environment officers responded to calls about the fire that was lit on a commercial property near Three Brothers Corner around 9am. Although the greenwaste fire had been

permitted, it contained prohibited material including a fibreglass boat which caused a large plume of black smoke to drift over Richmond. Council spokesman Chris Choat says they issued a prosecution notice to the man on Tuesday. Chris says the man will go to court where he faces a maximum penalty for the offence of two years imprisonment or a fine of $300,000. Richmond Volunteer

Local builder finds his apprentice Andrew Board It took two months, saw almost 90 applications sent in and attracted support from local businesses – and now builder Andrew Martin has found his apprentice. Taine Dillon was a year 12 student at Nayland College when he saw an article in the Weekly featuring Andrew and his building company, who were on the hunt for a new apprentice.

Taine says he wrote his application straight away. “I had a deal with my dad that I couldn’t leave school until I got an apprenticeship. I’ve always wanted to be a builder, it sort of runs in the family.” Taine says he was doing work experience with a builder through the Gateway programme that runs through Nayland College. “I’ve had that taste through Gateway, but it’s been teasing me because it was

just one day a week and then I’d have to go back to school.” Taine says he was “stoked” when he was given the job. “I think my dad was more happy than me, he had a smile on his face all day. I think it hit me the day after.” Andrew says the quality of applicants was superb. “I was surprised by how many there

Toxic black smoke pollutes FROM PAGE 1 Fire Brigade chief Craig Piner says firefighters wearing breathing apparatus extinguished the blaze although it was too late to prevent the smelly smoke polluting a large tract of Richmond. The fire prompted angry remarks from people on the nearby Tasman Great Taste Trail, with one cyclist yelling at the man who lit the fire “if you did that in some countries in Europe you’d be locked up for it.” Craig and Waimea Rural Fire Authority principal fire officer Ian Reade both say that they won’t be charging the man for the cost of call-out although Ian says “it’s disappointing that he didn’t follow the rules”.

Hundreds celebrate Mother’s Day with a 5km fun run The Jennian Homes Mother’s Day fun run and walk took place on Sunday, with nearly 700 people taking part in support of women’s heart health. The event began in Champion Rd, and followed a five kilometre route. It was part of a nationwide initiative that is run by Jennian Homes annually to support the Heart Foundation’s ‘Go Red for Women’ campaign, which aims to im-

prove the heart health of New Zealand females. Heart disease is the single biggest killer of women, taking the lives of over 50 each week in this country. An extra special touch of the Nelson event was the CPR coaching that was provided on site by local St. John paramedics. The ‘Cardio Coaches’ used practice mannequins, and gave training to family

members while they waited for their loved ones to complete the route, as well as to runners who had finished the event. Henley School is also benefiting from the heart health message, as it will be receiving $2500 worth of Rebel Sport vouchers. Schools were nominated by fun run and walk entrants during the registration process and Henley School had the most nominations.

Freezing worker says goodbye Simon Bloomberg

One of Nelson meatworks longest serving worker, Doug 'Muscles' Scowen, is retiring next week after 53 consecutive seasons on the job. Doug joined his father Bill in the old Stoke plant on January 2, 1963, after leaving Waimea College aged 15. And he's been there ever since, working as a ticket boy, neck stringer and trimmer before moving into the freezers where he spent 35 seasons. "I remember my first week because that's when I got my nickname. I started working as a ticket boy and if any of the carcasses fell off the rail, I would have to pick them up. "But I was such a puny teenager that I couldn't do it. One of the blokes in the office yelled out "use your muscles" and that became my nickname - it just stuck." However, Doug soon developed into a strapping young adult with some real muscles and he put them to good use working in the freezer. It was well-paid work but Doug says they earned their money, lugging whole carcasses around in freezing tem-

peratures for up to 12 hours a day. "It was better money than the six pounds ten pence I got when I started as a ticket boy and more than my friend, who was a apprentice mechanic, was getting. But it was hard work because it was all manual back then and we'd stack whole carcasses and do long hours. "Some of those big sheep carcasses used to be over 100 pounds. We used to lift pigs and quarters of beef in there as well - it usually took two or three of us to do that. It was cold too because, back then, we didn't have any special thermal gear – just jerseys and balaclavas. We'd wrap mutton cloth or hessian around our boots to keep our feet warm." Doug says the freezer hands also used to handle pigs and beef which were killed in the old plant, as well as cheese, fish and raspberries when storage in freezers around Nelson were full. He also remembers having to smash massive "ice stalactites and stalagmites" that formed in the original, "leaky old" freezers when it rained. "I'd go in there and clear them out with an axe and crowbar before we could start loading. Sometimes they

were so big I'd have to go and get a kanga hammer from the engineers to break them off." Doug later moved back to the mutton floor and offal department in the new plant in 2002. He even had two seasons working alongside his wife Elizabeth in the offal department, continuing the Scowens long association with the meatworks. "Dad was a foreman in the rendering department and he got me my job there. My brothers Graham and Warrick and sisters Lorraine and Margaret also worked there, so it was a real family affair." After 53 years of waking up at 5am to get ready for work, Doug says he won't miss the early starts but he will miss all "the great people who work there". And he will still be busy, working his way through a "long list of jobs" Elizabeth has lined up and pursuing his interests such as tramping, wood turning and travelling. "It's going to be a big change after spending all my working life here. It's funny though, because when I left school and dad got me the job here I thought I'd give it a shot and see what happened but I stayed here forever."

Rest home manager backs postie

The postie who came under fire from her employer last week for not delivering “scam” mail to elderly residents says the support of the Ernest Rutherford resthome manager means a lot to her. Last week, the postwoman, who has not been named, was facing discipline from New Zealand Post for not delivering the scam mail after she was first shown a US$180,000 lottery scam from Malaysia by a colleague who received it in his own letterbox. One of the areas affected was Er-

nest Rutherford Retirement Village. Manager Durham Quigley told Waimea Weekly that “we are very supportive and think she has done the right thing”. Durham also slated NZ Post for disciplining the postie, and allegedly threatening her with dismissal or a jail sentence, for twice refusing to deliver the scam mail. “We are very pleased with her in regards to the protection of our residents,” Durham says. “She hasn’t opened the mail or redirected it or anything, she has

stupid – they are walking away when someone is committing a crime and saying ‘it’s not my responsibility’.” Durham says their residents are “very thankful that she has informed them” about the scam mail. Waimea Weekly has been in contact with the postie who says Durham’s comments came at a time when she was “at her lowest”. Postal Workers Union of Aotearoa district president John Maynard earlier said that New

just told people there is a scam. “We are getting this sort of stuff a lot and she was just fulfilling her moral obligation to inform people. I’ve been really surprised at NZ Post and the stance they have taken – I think it’s ridiculous. “She, at least, has a moral conscience and it sounds like NZ Post doesn’t. Zealand Post’s actions were concerning. “It seemed they were trying to discipline her for opening other people’s mail, but that wasn’t the case.” A NZ Post spokesperson earlier denied claims the company had overreacted to the incident. Although the postie had breached conditions of her employment, managers had adopted a reasonable approach to the incident and had not issued a formal warning or threatened her with jail.

New petrol station planned for Richmond

A resource consent has been lodged by Caltex Bishopdale owner Kyle Lightfoot to build a petrol station on the corner of Champion Rd and Salisbury Rd, adjacent to the Richmond Aquatic Centre. Kyle says he only lodged the application last Friday and says it is too early to discuss any details of the application. Nelson company Coman Holdings Limited owns the 5260 square metre site at 149 Salisbury Rd after purchasing it from the Tasman District Council last year. The land is zoned for tourism and cannot be used for residential development. Progressive Enterprises had earlier lodged an application to rezone a site on the opposite side of Salisbury Rd from residential to commercial as the first step to building a new Countdown supermarket.

Sonya Briggs, manager of environmental health and communicable disease for NMDHB, says that two sales were made to the 16 year-old. Fight 4 Victory is back Andrew Board The region’s hardest hitting charity event is back and its organisers are putting the call out for willing contestants. Fight 4 Victory 3 will be held at the Trafalgar Centre on November 5, a little over 18 months after the event’s second edition. And the team behind the event says now that the venue is confirmed, they need to find those willing to pull on the gloves and get in the ring. The fight nights have raised tens of thousands of dollars for the Victory Boxing Charitable Trust, which runs a youth pro-

gramme for hundreds of school kids. Victory Boxing programme director Paul Hampton says taking part is a massive commitment. “The training is significant. It is at least three months and takes a lot of time and dedication but we’ve had some great stories of those who have spoken about it. Some have said it’s been lifechanging for them.” Those interested in taking part in Fight 4 Victory 3 should email their name, age, weight, height and a bit about their background, including their motivation for taking part to paul@victoryboxing.org.nz or baz@galbraithgroup.co.nz

Your Family’s Health vs Your Money When someone in your family is diagnosed with a serious illness you have three choices; 1. Wait until they can be treated in the public system, (can be 6 months +++) and hope they survive long enough to receive the treatment. 2. Pay for the treatment, (drugs, surgery, hospitalisation) and hope you don’t need to mortgage your house.

Mapua School pupils, teachers and parents were planting native trees and shrubs at Hoddy Estuary Park as part of the Battle for the Banded Rail project. Photo: Simon Bloomberg.

3. Plan ahead, pay a little bit now and get treatment when you need it at no extra cost!

Pupils, parents and staff from Mapua School are the latest volunteers to fight in the Battle for the Banded Rail, planting native trees and shrubs last Friday to enhance the habitat for the rare wetland bird around Hoddy Estuary Park. Banded rail numbers have declined throughout New Zealand over the last 30 years, with the only remaining South Island populations found around Nelson and Marlborough. Last year, a group of dedicated volunteers planted 5000 native trees and shrubs around the Waimea Inlet to restore habitat for the banded rail and on Friday Mapua School pupils

Due to the lack of funding for the Public Health Service, you can experience long delays before receiving treatment and many of the important drugs are unfunded. There are a number of ways we can help you plan for the future, but don’t wait until something happens, otherwise it will be too late and you will “have” to choose between option 1 or 2!

I am Syd Hanna, a Financial Adviser specialising in Risk Advice with over 30 years’ experience, based in Richmond/Nelson. To find out what your options are, and for an obligation free quote contact me on 0275 330 506 or 548 9090 or email to: syd.hanna@camelotgroup.co.nz

Volunteers dig in to save banded rail increased that number by 200. Volunteer Gillian Bishop says the amount of banded rail habitat has been reduced by “development” around the Waimea Inlet and the planting is helping restore that habitat. “We planted 5000 plants last year and we want to plant another 5000 this year and hope to create a network of habitats for the birds,” she says. The second part of the project is coordinating a trapping programme that involves 130 volunteers setting a network of 500 traps from Mapua to Rabbit Island to control predators. Gillian says the project came out of the Waimea Inlet Forum and “we have fantastic support

from DOC, Tasman District Council, the Rata Foundation and all our volunteers”. There are a number of community planting days scheduled over the next month. Planting is from 9am to 1pm and anyone interested in volunteering should bring a spade, gloves and suitable footwear to the planting sites. Planting days will be held at Manuka Island, Sunday May 15, Dominion Embayment, May 21, Stringer Creek, May 29, North Bronte Peninsula on Cardno Way, June 12 and Research Orchard Rd, June 26. For more information email bandedrail@gmail.com or phone Kathryn 544 4537.

Genealogy group seeks WWI stories Nelson genealogists want people to submit their family's stories of servicemen and women from around the region who served in World War I. The New Zealand Society of Genealogists Nelson branch has already assembled a basic information on the men and women from Nelson and Tasman involved in WWI, as part of the WWI 100 Year Commemoration. Last year, it also published a book titled All Guts No Glory about the chaplains and around 50 women who served as nurses in North Africa, Europe and the United Kingdom. However, the Nelson genealogists librarian Cheryl Carnahan says they have decided to ask families to provide additional information about their relatives involved in WWI to add colour and depth to their records. The group plans to assemble and preserve these records so they can "see the light of day" and be used by subsequent generations. "We had a few of these come to us and we thought it would be a good

idea if we could ask families around Nelson and Tasman to tell their stories," Cheryl says. "After all, the families are the ones who know more about these men and women - they have the colourful stories that we don't have in the official records." Cheryl says the stories would typically include a description of where they lived before and after the war and details about their family, involvement in WWI and personal exploits or awards they received. A photo of the family member in uniform would also be useful. The group is also interested in men and women from other districts who served in the 10th Nelson Mounted Rifles of the Canterbury Mounted Regiment and the 12th Nelson Company of the Canterbury Infantry Regiment. People can submit their stories electronically by email to nelson@genealogy.org.nz or by post to PO Box 1879, Nelson 7040.

Ark celebrates 21st It’s a 21st of sorts, The Nelson Ark celebrated the graduation of it’s 21st programme at Stonehurst Farm on Saturday. During their 14 years in Nelson, the organisation working with disengaged youth and simultaneously saving and rehoming abandoned dogs, have had around 130 students through their programme. The day featured dog displays, a best dressed dog & owner competition, pony rides, stalls, an inflatable obstacle course and

plenty of activities for the canines too. Nelson Ark coordinator Karen Howieson says it was a beautiful day, “We were really pleased and it was a great way to celebrate this milestone. “We had around 150 people come through during the day, not including children, and we raised $880 which was brilliant.” For more on the Ark’s programmes or to support the charity, head to www.thenelsonark. co.nz

Warm weather continues into May The unseasonably warm weather continued last week with another record high temperature being recorded in Nelson and Richmond last Thursday. The temperature gauge on the Network Tasman clock on Queen St in Richmond showed 25 degrees Celsius just after midday which was an unofficial record for May. It was a slightly cooler 22 degrees at Nelson Airport but that was still the second highest May temperature since records started in 1943 - the record 22.7 degrees was recorded on May 1 in 2011.

DHB campaign against sugar: Parents/family are responsible for the epidemic of kids needing to have teeth removed. It can only be due to ignorance and the all-too-common general idea that it’s someone else’s fault and/or responsibility. Common sense is not so common! Alison Holmes. Rock display a delight: I wonder how many people have seen the wonderful named display of local rocks, only approximately a 100 metre walk to the north of the Brook Waimarama Sanctuary. It'd be even better if the council could spruce up the display with a bit of water blasting, and provide some signposting to it. In the meantime, for anyone wanting to visit it, just head north (I think) from the sanctuary information centre, along a grassy track wide enough for a vehicle, until you come to a large flat area where the Nelson Municipal swimming pool use to be located. The display is just at the start of this flat area and is in memory of one of the city's engineers. This flat area would make a perfect children's play area and family picnic area. There’re already barbecues in place, though these may now need replacing with gas barbecues? Harry Pearson.

Grassroots 1868 LTD Supporting from the ground up

Spud profits aid community groups The popularity of pre-cooked frozen potatoes is helping local community groups. Grassroots 1868 Ltd is a company not heard of before but they make possibly the most popular potatoes in Nelson. And its owner says the growing appeal of the spuds means more than $7000 has been donated to community groups. The vast majority of profits from the Grassroots 1868 Ltd potatoes is distributed to community groups, says business owner Garry Higgins. The pre-cooked, seasoned roast potatoes are made with high pressure cooker, their size and cooking process give a low fat content and the secret recipe delivers a great unique taste. Their popularity has seen a rapidly growing demand from wide variety of groups as they are great for kids to heat up, dinner parties, families and single people who only use what they need. People reheat them either in their ovens, deep fry, air fry or on the barbecue and sprinkle a bit of rosemary a couple minutes before serving. Garry says satisfied customers like to inform him of their experience and most tell of how they “had a dinner party and guests want to know how they cooked them”, but the secret is not revealed. Garry says the potatoes are sold hot at his other business, Richmond Roast House and Café in Richmond, as part of

the meals. When he brought that business, he found a niche market for demand of the frozen seasoned potatoes. On advice from his accountants at Johnson Associates, Garry registered the delicious pre-cooked, seasoned roast potatoes as an intellectual property with a registered trade mark for protection

mond Roast House also pays a fee for this, creating further funding possibilities First selling at Fresh Choice Richmond, Garry received some valuable advice from Fresh Choice owner Gary Watson about how the market works. Gary Watson also made available some contacts

“The Roast House is my primary business and it’s important that we continue to grow and maintain profitability for staff and the community that demand a good hearty healthy solid meal,” Garry says. “But the potatoes are a side venture that has further growth to help support the community.” Garry says with demand in both business for both hot and frozen potatoes, outgrowing supply, he has invested in extra machinery to deliver a more consistent supply which has helped create extra employment. “Last year, we cooked over 20,000kg of potatoes nearly 6000kg was for the frozen range,” he says. Garry says he was keen for the profits of the potatoes to support the community, more so the grassroot groups as per name, but some larger groups are as valuable as Garry says “one day friends or myself may need them” . Last year, profits were donated to Nelson Marlborough Rescue Helicopter (silver sponsor) Riding for Disabled, Waimea Old Boys, Tasman Golf Club, Richmond Bowls, Dovedale Country Fare, Nelson Horse Dressage, Autism NZ and local schools totalling $7000 Grassroots 1868 Ltd would like to thank the community for their support. Making life simpler and healthier

Most of us have fond childhood memories; the Tooth Fairy, Santa Claus... and the local milkman. And the really good news is that the local milkman is alive and well, and for the last 20 years he has been delivering fresh milk right to our doors. Even better, Trevor Nichols, our friendly local milkman from Milk and More, is now able to bring you real milk! He’s teamed up with Oaklands Farm to bring 100% natural, farm-fresh Nelson milk, in glass bottles, just like the old days. Trevor is still delivering Anchor products, but he is really excited to be including Oaklands Farm Milk to his range. Oaklands Farm Milk is pure, farm-fresh, wholesome pasteurised milk. It comes in BPA free glass bottles, keeping milk colder, and the glass stops any transfer of foreign odour or flavour - so it just tastes better. It’s environmentally friendly, as recycling and reusing glass bottles decreases landfill and, because Oaklands Milk is produced locally, it travels less to get to your fridge, reducing your carbon footprint. Oaklands Milk comes only from A2 cows and has many health benefits; its pure milk with no added permeate or powder, it doesn’t need it. Oaklands Milk is not homogenised, that’s why you’ll need to give your bottle a shake or risk a family fight over who gets the cream at the top! Although it is pure milk, you shouldn’t confuse it with raw milk, pasteurising reduces pathogens whilst maintaining goodness. Whether you choose to try new Oaklands Milk or to stick with the Anchor range, you really should consider having your milk delivered. How many times have you boiled the jug, brewed the coffee and wouldn’t you know it, there’s no milk! Avoid those costly trips to the dairy and get your friendly milkie to deliver right to your door. Milk and More deliver milk, cream, organic veggies and free range eggs. They can set up a standard order for you, so you don’t need to remember to put out your order and you can pay on the day, use good old milk tokens, or set up an account to pay monthly. Milk and More are leading the way in NZ, turning back the clock to a better time, in terms of the way you get your milk. Call Trevor today to talk about how he can help with home deliveries.

We are locally owned and operated Located under the same roof as Richmond Locks, Alarms and Electrical on McGlashen Ave, is your Local Authorised AA licencing and registration agent. They offer a large range of services, including: new and renewal AA memberships, driver licence applications and renewals, driver licence theory tests, driver licence reinstatement, vehicle licencing (rego), road user charges, change of ownership, new and replacement number plates, international driving permits, IRD numbers, photos for super gold cards and maps and regional information booklets. Even though this is a well established business, many locals have been under the impression that they needed to travel into Nelson to have their applications processed, whereas they can do it right here in Richmond. For all those learner drivers-to-be, there are practice tests available for $20 to help prepare you for the theory test. Once you’ve gained your learner licence they can offer 3 free driving lessons if you or your parents are AA members. The helpful staff have also just added another full time team member, which means they can process requests quicker – meaning, less wait time for customers. So, if you need any of the above services, come and see Lisa, Bex, Louise and Cleo at the AA – or call (03) 544 4077 for more information. Whether you are building a new property or renovating or redecorating an existing one, the team from Brushworks Painting and Decorating can help make it look fantastic. They recognise that to get the professional finish you are after, you need to get the foundations right first, and that’s why you should call in their experienced and professional team. Their plasterboard stopping team will ensure that new plasterboard, as well as recently stripped walls, are prepared properly before the painters and/or wall paper hangers get to work. They have a team of painters and wall paper hangers who can take care of all interior and exterior projects, but if you are a bit of a DIYer and want to tackle the painting yourself, they seriously recommend that you consider getting the professional plasterers in first to avoid being disappointed in the end results. Plastering is a tricky business, and although you may think that you’ve got it looking okay, it’s often not until the paint goes on that imperfections will show, and no one wants the hassle and expense of having to start over. Brushworks Painting and Decorating’s team have 20 years experience providing expert service in the Nelson Tasman region. Give Sarah a call on 027 699 6661 to arrange for your obligation free quote. Although these measures may help, one of the country's most experienced dog handlers, Tasman District Council dog control officer John Bergman believes the key to reducing these problems is education. And John should know. He has been working with dogs for 43 years and is the country's longest serving dog control officer. John started his canine career in Christchurch, firstly as the manager of an SPCA shelter and then later as a hydatids control officer for the Waimari

County Council. He even drove his pregnant wife, Linda, to the hospital in an SPCA Ambulance for the birth of their son Philip. In 1987, John moved to Nelson to become a dog control officer for the Waimea County Council and later Tasman District Council. He has been in that job ever since and so it's an understatement to say that John knows a bit about dogs, especially aggressive or mistreated ones.. Although John says Nelson and Tasman dogs and dog owners are among the best in the country, there were still a reported 147 dog bites in Nelson in 2015 and 108 in Tasman. Seventy-one of the 4500 dogs registered in Nelson last year

were classified as menacing compared to 69 of the 10,504 registered dogs in Tasman. John says there are a number of ways to reduce these figures and at the top of the list is education. If everyone who owns or encounters dogs followed some golden rules, the number of incidents would be dramatically reduced. "We are lucky here because we have good dog owners and the council has a very good dog policy," John says. "Dog control officers in some parts of the country have to go in pairs for safety when they go and see some owners about their dogs. "But we still have a lot of dogs in this district so it's important that owners know how to treat their

Two years later, John was bitten on the leg after responding to a message from an owner who said "you'd better come and get my dogs, they are out of control". There were three pitbulls in an enclosure and one of them escaped and ran around behind John and bit his calf while he was helping his son Phillip secure another one of the dogs. Despite these injuries, and having to witness the end result of some "heartbreaking mistreatment" of dogs, John says he loves his job. He says the satisfaction he gets out of reuniting a lost dog with their owners or re-homing an unwanted dog make all the bad aspects of the job worthwhile. "The nicest thing about this job is seeing peo-

Just a thought... By Christy McCarren, Hope Community Church Tick…tock, tick…tock. Time is ticking away. We all have 365 days in a year. That’s a lot of time. At the end of a day, do you ever sit back and wonder what did I do today that mattered? For all of us, time is a precious commodity that we only have a limited supply of, and yet we fill it so easily with this or that. It’s like sand running through an hourglass, whether you are ready or not, your time keeps going until it runs out. None of us can win extra time or change the fact that life here on earth is finite. I don’t know about you, but I want to make my days here on earth matter for something, not live them randomly from day to day. We have to spend time doing things that must be done, work, family,

home life, church, eating, sleeping. The rest of those hours are a gift waiting to be used. My husband and I manage a 40day mentoring and leadership development programme called Off The GRID. Off The GRID gives young Christian adults a season away from the distractions of life through a media fast and time in the mountains. We study the Bible, learn how to apply it to our everyday life and focus on others rather than ourselves. When offering advice to a participant about a big life decision, you will often hear us say, “you must choose, but choose wisely”. Will life be run through with only ourselves in mind, or will we reach out to the world around us with love and compassion? What about you? What are you doing with the sand in your hourglass? In the grand scheme of life, will today matter? Tick…tock.

Focus on WakeField Wakefield Cubs celebrate 100 years. This year we are celebrating 100 years of cubs, especially the Wakefield cub pack. We have been busy celebrating with some really fun activities such as kayaking at Bridge Valley, cycling, swimming and an egg challenge with Brightwater cubs, but a highlight so far this year would be the Nelson Zone Cub Spooners Tunnel walk. Wakefield School PTA needs your recipes. The Wakefield School PTA is putting together a school and community cookbook and they are asking locals to consider sharing their favourite recipes to be included. If you have a few favourite or yummy recipes and are happy to share them, please either bring a copy to the school office or email to ptawakefield@gmail.com. The organisers are happy to receive your favourite recipes from published cookbooks, as well as any family favourites that have perhaps been handed through generations but they do need to be in by June 1.

Phil Costley runs himself into NZ record books

Jacob Page Richmond runner and Nelson College maths teacher Phil Costley has earned a unique national distinction. Thanks to victory in the New Zealand 100km Championships at Christchurch’s Hagley Park last week, Phil has won national titles at every distance from 3000m to 100km. The 46-year-old has held 33 New Zealand titles all up in almost everything you could imagine for running. It is all the more impressive considering the 46-year-old never won a running race at high school. He’s won six 12km cross country titles, five 3000m steeplechase crowns, four half marathons and three marathon titles, just to name a few. He’s earned 104 provincial running titles. He collected his first national title in 1994 but had to wait a while to taste success. “I started racing at 18 or 19 years old and I thought to myself ‘I just want to win a medal – I wanted something to show for the effort I put in, but I went home empty-handed. “I got my first medal, a bronze in 1993, but I thought it would be nice to win, so the next year I went back and won and the whole thing progressed from there.” Phil stuck at it and the national

Photo: Jacob Page. titles kept coming to the point where he began to wonder which ones he hadn’t got. “The last one felt like the 10,000m title I won in 2008 but then I began to wonder if I could extend it by getting the 100km title because I don’t have the speed to win them over the shorter distances.” That day came last Sunday when Phil completed 50 laps of Hagley Park. Phil says he runs with a high tempo and challenges runners to catch him. “I’ve grown to accept that I can go to that deep dark place in your head and stay there longer and endure the pain longer than most when I’m running and I think that’s how I win most of my races.”

Phil has run almost every day for his entire adult life. He runs from Richmond to Nelson College and back every day, “I do it because I enjoy it, because I know those same people who walk to and from work and I like saying hello to them. “Plus, it only takes me 10 minutes longer to get home than it would in a car during peak traffic. “To me, running is thinking time, I can go on auto-pilot and just think about my school classes.” The most national titles is Valerie Young’s record of 37 but Phil says he does not expect to eclipse that.

Life’s a beach for Holly ‘Must win’

for Giants this Friday

Simon Bloomberg

Waimea College student Holly Chandler is hoping hundreds of hours of training will pay off when she heads to Laos for the Asian under-19 beach volleyball champs later this week. Holly has been training for the champs since being named in February to play for New Zealand alongside Northland’s Jasmine Milton. The pair spent last school holidays at a beach volleyball training camp in Auckland and training together in Northland to fine tune their teamwork before flying to Laos for the May 20-22 tournament. “I played with Jasmine in one game in the US last year and then we were named in the team together in February so we’ve been together a while now,” Holly says. “We get on really well, on and off the court, and although we are both quite silent players, we understand what the other player wants.” Holly has also been training with Waimea College’s Charles Ching, Tane McDonald, Nick McDonald-Davis and Matt Heyward under the guidance of coach Josh Ovsenek. She says those sessions have been invaluable and she hopes they will help her take “a big step up” for the Asian champs which are a qualifier for the world champs to be held in Cyprus in July. “China and Japan will be there and they are some of the top volleyball countries in the world so it’s going to be very com-

Jacob Page

Photo: Simon Bloomberg. petitive,” Holly says. “The under-17 girls have just been to their Asian champs in Thailand and they finished seventh and eighth so that gives you an idea of the standard. “The top five teams qualify for worlds so we’d love to do that. It would be amazing to get to Cyprus.” Holly also expects the playing conditions to be a challenge with high humidity and temperatures in the high 30s. However, it won’t be totally unfamiliar territory for Holly who played in the Asian under-17 indoor champs in Thailand in 2014 and also has international experience playing in the US and Australia.

The Asian champs, and then hopefully the worlds, will be the end of a busy volleyball season for Holly who also played in the young Waimea College indoor team that finished seventh at nationals in Palmerston North last month. She is also a member of the school’s top basketball and netball teams and last month was named as one of the recipients of the Sports Tasman Pathway to Podium Awards. Charles, Tane and Nick were also selected for national squads named last week. Charles was selected for the national junior men’s team while Tane and Nick were named in the national youth men’s team.

Nelson Giants coach Tim Fanning says this Friday’s NBL clash with the Southland Sharks at the Trafalgar Centre is a must win. “There’s no other way of looking at it, it’s a must win game if we want to make the playoffs. After a one win, one loss road trip, the Giants are clinging to fourth by points differential but have played an extra game than the fifth-placed Sharks. “Our aim was to win one of those road games and beating the Mountainairs was good, but then losing to the Rangers by two was one where we had chances to win.” Both teams have beaten each other on their home courts this season, but the Mike Pero Giants will have to get the job done without Finn Delany who suffered an ankle injury and is expected to miss at least a couple of games. Delany had been the second most consistent point scorer for the Giants this season, so finding those points from other players, may shift the focus back to veteran Phill Jones, Fanning says his players will always back their ability to win a home game. “I think if you told this group of guys they had to win a home game for a playoff spot, they would have signed off on that." The game tips off at 7pm.

Nelson's Zoe Walker excited about Tactix homecoming Jacob Page Former Waimea College netball player and Mainland Tactix defender Zoe Walker hopes the nerves of playing in front of her home town will have finally calmed by this Sunday. Zoe and the Christchurch-based Tactix will play the Waikato Bay of Plenty Magic in the ANZ transTasman Netball Championship, at the Trafalgar Centre on Sunday afternoon. Zoe says playing at home, in front of friends and family, was initially daunting. “I actually made my debut for the Tactix against WBOP at the Trafalgar Centre in 2013 and I can remember not being able to do a full lunge because I was nervous and my knees were shaking.” The usually-underwhelming Tactix have already beaten two New

Zealand franchises this season with one goal wins over both the Northern Mystics and Central Pulse. “It’s given all 12 of us a lot of confidence,” Zoe says. “Even when we haven’t been winning in previous seasons we haven’t imploded as a squad, but winning certainly helps everything. “To be able to walk the walk after talking the talk is a good thing and we need to keep doing that." The 22-year-old has been a Silver Fern trialist and has played for New Zealand A in recent years. She says that experience has helped her mature as a player and make senior players, whom she once looked up to, seem less intimidating. “When you are in that kind of environment, you see a different side to the girls as opposed to just their hard, netball player exterior you

see on the court. The Magic have always had a core of experienced players like that but, once you’re out there playing, they’re just another body you’re competing against.” Zoe says she still has her family in Nelson and as long as that’s the case she’ll always call it home. “It’s always good to see my Mum and Dad and spend time with them at home, but they are also pretty good at keeping things relaxed for me.” Zoe is contracted to the Tactix until the end of the current season. “I just go out there and try to play as well as I can so they’ll want to keep me around,” she says. Mainland Tactix v Waikato/Bay of Plenty Magic will start at 4.10pm at the Trafalgar Centre on Sunday. To win a double pass to the game, email us at editorial@nelsonweekly.co.nz

Richmond still top of football ladder Jacob Page Richmond Athletic have maintained their unbeaten run in the top flight of Nelson Bays Football with a 2-0 win over Sprig and Fern Tahuna on Saturday. FreshChoice Richmond continued their march towards a championship while maintaining a six point advantage over the rest of the competition. Richmond again proved how lethal they are late in the piece with two second half goals. Nelson Suburbs First XI couldn't halt their downward slide, losing 6-0 to the Marlborough Mariners.

FC Nelson and Nelson College played out a 1-1 draw. Suburbs Seals kept themselves in the hunt with a 2-0 away win over Pomeroy's Wakefield. In the Mainland Premier League, Nelson Suburbs showed plenty of heart to come from 2-0 down to beat FC Twenty11 5-3 in their thrilling match at Saxton Field on Sunday. Campbell Banks and Max Winterton each scored twice as the hosts overcame a terrible start where they leaked two early goals. It was Matt Tod-Smith's goal on the eve of halftime which got Suburbs back in the game.

Waimea Old Boys RFC

www.wobrfc.co.nz

Dylan Fletcher faces future head-on Jacob Page At 24, Waimea Old Boys first five eighth Dylan Fletcher says he is playing his last season of division one rugby because of concussion fears. "This is my last season, I've had too many concussions and I don't think the risk is worth it," Dylan says just moments after his 24-point haul helped WOB beat Central 36-22 at Jubilee Park. "I've made peace with it and come to the realisation that this isn't paying my bills. "It does hurt a little because I've just started to enjoy the game again." He has come a long way from where he was as a 17-year-old winning a third division title with his father playing in the forwards. "They were fun times, I was at 10 and my old man was playing the occasional flanker or No 8 role - I think he was 44 and we managed to win a championship together.

Dylan has returned this season to the club he grew up with after four seasons playing Christchurch Division One rugby for High School Old Boys. He says the experience down south has helped him pilot a young backline in a rebuilding year. "This is a young team but we are starting to get confidence and gel together and the wins are helping with that. Dylan's points haul included three tries, three conversions and a penalty. The win over third placed Central means Waimea Old Boys are right in the mix for the top four on a congested middle of the Tasman Trophy points ladder. They next face Waitohi at Jubilee Park on Saturday and then have another Marlborough team in Harlequins the following week at home. If both those results go their way then a semi final berth will be well within reach for the young team by the time they travel to face Renwick in the final game of the round-robin.

A spectacular first half propelled Waimea Old Boys B to a 23-12 win over Riwaka at Jubilee Park in Division Two club rugby on Saturday. The hosts led 17-0 at halftime and were led on attack by Kristian HallSmith who scored a try, and kicked a conversion and two penalties. Powerful centre Vainga Filfoeuler crashed over for

a try to give the team the edge they needed. WOB coach Wayne Bateman says tipping over the previously third-placed team is a confidence boost. “I think they expected to come to us and just beat us but we really turned up and played hard. Wayne says the line out was a strength all game and the forwards lifted their workrate. “That was the kind of effort we want to see,”

Wayne says. “We want to keep building and building week after week as we get closer to the semifinals.” Wayne believed it was the team’s best performance of the season. “It was a real team effort all the way around. “If we continue to play like that then we’ll be a real chance in the top four.” WOB will host Takaka at Jubilee Park on Saturday. Kick off is at 1pm

The gift of generosity “Can’t you just share,” is a cry from many a frustrated parent, myself included. Teaching kids to share can be a battle. Our daughter used to talk about “yours” and “mines”. One could argue discussion on the growing inequality or the rise of the ‘one percent’ is really a discussion on sharing and generosity within our society.

generous and share what they have. The generosity is infectious and others start sharing too, whether it is fruit from their gardens, homemade chutneys, smiles, hospitality, ideas or success. Sometimes we can start to think what we have to share is too small or no one will want what we have to offer. But it is the act of being generous that can lead to bigger surprises than we can imagine. - Fiona Summerfield, church member

To be generous is to have a readiness to give beyond what is expected or necessary. Is it generous when wealthy people or companies set up charities or trusts to distribute their wealth? Is it generous when someone stops what they are doing to help a stranger? Neither of these actions are expected or necessary.

Matthew, Mark, Luke and John all retell a story in the Bible of a large crowding numbering in the thousands being fed by just one child being generous enough to share his small lunch. Some say the miracle was not the creation of more food. The miracle happened after one person was prepared to step forward and share. His gift, however meagre, was readily accepted by Jesus with thanks and without judgement. This led to the miracle of everyone else sharing what they had with those around them. We have all seen this at work or in the community, when someone is brave enough to be

Water main and resurfacing works As part of their responsibility to maintain and improve state highways across the country, the NZ Transport Agency is upgrading the water main on Gladstone Road between Oxford Street and McGlashen Avenue and then resurfacing the road. Crews are working at night from 7.00 pm–6.00 am, starting Monday 9 May, for approximately six weeks (about 25 nights work). Crews will not be working every night and given the nature of the work they will not work if bad weather strikes. Work will occur in stages over the four weeks to minimise disruption to local residents, businesses and the travelling public. If you have any questions or would like to speak to someone about this project please contact Andrew McAllister on 03 546 3680 or 027 448 6267. If you need to talk to someone while the work is happening, please contact Nick Hill on 027 2468 499.

Apply for a Community Grant online Are you planning a great community event or project – but need a little help to make it happen? We may be able to help. Applications for our Community Grants are open, and there is funding available for Tasmanbased projects that meet a community need, join communities together and have community support. Priority is given to projects that can show financial support from other sources as well. We’re moving to a simplified, online-only application form this year. To help you get started, we will be running sessions at our local libraries to show you how to fill in the online form. Details of these will be posted on our website and publicised in future editions of Newsline. Applications close on 31 July 2016. Grants are available for projects that fit into the following categories: • Arts/culture/heritage/museums • Festivals and events • Youth and children • Social services • Environment • Emergency services • Sports and recreation facilities. Apply online: Visit tasman.govt.nz/link/grants to fill in the online application form. For more information: Visit our website, tasman.govt.nz/link/grants or email Community Partnerships Coordinator Mike Tasman-Jones, mike.tasman-jones@tasman.govt.nz.

How are we doing? We are conducting our annual survey to find out how Tasman residents think we are performing. In supporting and developing our communities through the activities and services we provide, we also need to look closely at how well we are delivering our services now and into the future. The residents’ survey helps us to track our performance and hear your views on what we do well and where we can improve. The best way to do this is through an independent and impartial interview of a representative cross-section of Tasman people. The results of the survey will be made public. They form part of the Council’s formal reporting and are a critical ingredient in planning for further improvements to our services. For this reason, we greatly appreciate those residents who are contacted taking the time to be involved. The survey is totally confidential. National Research Bureau is undertaking the telephone survey.

Richmond & Districts Information Centre With the busy tourist season still with us, and winter on the way, more volunteers are urgently required to work three hour shifts on a weekly or fortnightly basis at the Information Centre in Gladstone Road. Successful applicants would be required to work with more experienced volunteers initially before being asked to work on their own. Although applicants should preferably have a good knowledge of the local community, this is not necessary, as the Centre has a large database. They should be well presented and enjoy meeting and conversing with visitors from all over New Zealand and the World. The Centre is well appointed with good facilities. If you are interested in this type of work, call in to the Centre or Ph. 03 543 9521 or contact Sally Symonds, Ph. 03 542 3983 (rosters) for further details.
