A destructive driving spree left nearly every road sign and several mailboxes annihilated, causing thousands of dollars of damage for Tasman ratepayers.
The driver took a roughly 18km journey, beginning in Motueka Valley and ending in Brooklyn, sometime during the first weekend of April. Transport manager for Tasman District Council Jamie McPher-
son says the cost to Tasman ratepayers will be well over $12,000. “Someone took it upon themselves to use their vehicle to destroy the signs.” Jamie says while the financial cost is relatively significant, it is the
potential effect on the safety of road users that is very concerning. “This is a rural road that can be challenging for some during the day, let alone at night.” TDC communication manager
Chris Choat says it’s concerning that people will now be uninformed about what’s coming along the road. “These are not just speed signs,

ANDREW BOARD One of the country’s oldest schools is on the move. Ranzau School, founded in 1845, will move from its current site at Ranzau Rd to the Meadows subdivision in Richmond West, the school’s board announced to staff and parents last week. The decision comes a little over a year after the Ministry of Education offered the opportunity for the school to move to a new location after a review of primary schools on the Waimea plains in 2020. The move, due to happen for the start of the 2026 school year, will undoubtedly see the school’s role increase. Currently, it has around 140 students, only a third of those are in the school’s zone. The new school will cater for up to 300 pupils. The 3ha site for the school was purchased by the government in 2020. At the time education minister Chris Hipkins said that by 2028, an additional 320 primary, 130 intermediate

As a result of the carnage along the stretch of road, scheduled roadworks had to be delayed as crews were instead reinstating the signs. “Our immediate focus is the reinstatement of the signs, particularly those that alert people to corners, appropriate speed and changes to driving conditions.” Contractors were dispatched immediately to begin replacing the signs. The council are now working closely with police to identify those
responsible. “Their thoughtlessness, which I’m sure they thought was ‘hilarious’, placed the average road user at risk,” Jamie says. The council were first alerted to the criminal damage last Sunday morning. “We had a strong public response to the incident, mainly from people who were angry those responsible had also targeted their letterboxes. “It was pretty evident where they had gone just by following the trail,” Jamie says. Ranzau School moving to Richmond West FROM PAGE 1 and 390 secondary places are expected to be needed in the Waimea catchment. “By 2048, those numbers expected to more than double,” he said Hipkins at the time. Ranzau School board chair, Daniel Haring, says the move is an exciting one for the school and “guarantees the future of Ranzau School for generations”. The school has been on its current site since 1848, when it moved from its original location on Whites Rd. The decision to move comes after more than a year of consultation and Ranzau School principal Dave Sampson says staff are fully supportive and excited about the teaching opportunities at the new site. “There are a lot of incredible local resources to be embraced and help create a curriculum that is real life and meaningful to students. There is a stream that runs next to the school, local businesses nearby, there’s a retirement village, there will be early learning centres, all within a safe walking distance. “This move will be incredible for our learners and that’s what we’ve kept at the centre of our

The history of the school at its current site was a consideration during the process but the long term future and the positives of a move were too great to ignore, says Dave. “There is a historical perspective and there is sentiment here. My four kids came through this school and I’ve worked here a long time. The staff, students and community have a lot invested in this school in this place, it is because of that investment we want to see it thrive and continue for a long time to come. We want to take the his-
tory and all the things that are unique and special about this school and enhance it.” He says students will also benefit from a larger school in a number of ways not just in the classroom. “Being slightly bigger will also mean more friendship, cultural and sporting opportunities.” Daniel says he hopes the name of the school will remain. “Ranzau wasn’t called Ranzau because of the road it’s on, it’s named after Count Rantzau who helped early settlers come here. We want the culture, history and heritage to go with us. Keeping the name will help the continuity of these important characteristics, allowing them to grow and flourish on a new site.”

Richmond rallies for family after house fire JENNY NICHOLSON When Raiha Kohi’s Griffin Street house went up in flames, she remembers seeing her son’s Thomas the Tank Engine blanket. She didn’t have time to grab it. It wasn’t her treasured memories that she saved. Instead, she ran into the garage to help her friend Colm Lenihan to safety. Colm had been working on a car in the garage, and it’s thought sparks from a grinder may have started the fire. “Colm’s a hero. He did everything right,” Raiha says. “He grabbed our fire extinguisher and tried to put the fire out, until he passed out.” Raiha and another woman who was there at the time managed to get him to the lounge. “Then he got up and went to fight it again.” Colm stood in the black billowing smoke holding a hose, still attempting to fight the fire. As Raiha saw the roof melting above him, she finally got him to leave. “We all saved each other,” she says. “It’s a journey we all went through.” While the fire raged, friends encouraged Raiha to look away, but it felt so unreal she had to watch it. “I needed to see it because it’s my life in the fire. It was heartbreak-
ing to watch.” Raiha is staying brave for her boys, but says she cries when they are not around. She has lost so much, including items belonging to her brother who passed away 15 years ago. She’s having nightmares of Colm standing in curling black smoke. The first car she had owned was in the yard. Its number plate and bumper bar were blown across the yard and the car itself is just a burned-out shell. Raiha still hopes something will have survived in it. Despite the losses, Raiha says there are so many positives. Most importantly, her boys weren’t home. “If they had been home they would have been helping work on the car,” she says. “How would I have known which way to turn to rescue them both?” Her cat, Secret, which was missing after the fire was found in the neighbour’s garden. Raiha had been concerned for the neighbour’s dog, but a policeman was able to rescue it. The outpouring of love and generosity from the community, and particularly from others living on Griffin Street has touched her deeply. “One of the best things out of the whole situation is how many people, that even though they are struggling, have come through for us.”

Raiha was able to look through the house before it was closed off due to the presence of asbestos. She found some of their photos had survived under a pile of clothing. Locals were alerted to the fire when they heard screams and saw thick black smoke above the house. One neighbour says she called 111 at 12.25 pm on Tuesday, 5 April. Fire and Emergency New Zea-
land (FENZ) shift manager Lyn Crosson says they received well over 20 emergency calls for the fire. “That is unusual, but we would always rather people ring even if we end up with a lot of calls.” Two Richmond crews were dispatched. On arrival they found the house was well alight and requested further assistance. Two crews from Stoke and one
from Nelson attended. Having determined they couldn’t save the house, the priority was ensuring the fire didn’t spread to the house and shed next door. A local resident says the house next door sustained damage on the side closest to the fire, leading to a big clean-up job that night. Lyn Crosson says a fire investigator was on-site the next day to determine the cause, but the fire was not tagged as suspicious.

Giant boulder to mark Snowden’s Bush bequest

The arrival of a six-tonne rock at Snowden’s Bush Reserve in Brightwater coincides with the formal purchase of the land by Snowden’s Bush Trust. The enormous boulder was selected from a Lee Valley quarry and will hold a memorial plaque to well-known local woman, Laura Hill, whose bequest established Pinegrove Trust. The trust provided the final block of funding required to secure the land at Snowden’s Bush. Trustee for the Snowden’s
Police are urging those with information on the death of a man in Hope last month to come forward. The body of Simon Allen Bevers was found at Eden’s Road Fruit orchard in Hope, at 7.30am on Wednesday, 9 March. No one has yet been held to account for the death of Bevers, and police are urging those still holding on to “meaningful information” in relation to the death to disclose it to police. The homicide investigation into his death remains ongoing. “Police have spoken to a number of witnesses and continue to analyse the evidence and information collected to date,” a police spokesperson says. “Police are determined and remain optimistic that the person, or persons, responsible for Simon’s death will be held to account. “We would, however, still like to hear from those with vital information that has not yet been disclosed to police regarding Simon’s death.” Anyone with information is urged to contact police on 105, quoting file number 220309/6371. Bush Trust, Janice Gibbs, says they wanted to put in a memorial which was fitting to the surroundings. “So, using locally-sourced natural limestone is perfect.” Taylors Contracting construction supervisor Brendon Robertson says the rock is embedded about 900mm into the ground and is surrounded by a steel cage foundation encased in concrete. “We’re really pleased with how it turned out and are happy to have been able to donate our time and materials for this
community project,” Brendon says. “A special thanks must go to Johnny Bloxham and Ben Kearns for all their hard work.” The final step of the land purchase process, which started in 2019, will be the formal notice transferring ownership to the Department of Conservation. “The official unveiling of the Laura Hill memorial plaque will conclude the Snowden’s Bush Trust project and will happen in mid-May,” Janice says. “The last three years have been incredibly hard going
for everyone involved, so it will be a special moment when we can finally say our work here is done.” New conservation group Friends of Snowden’s Bush has been formed in partnership with DOC to help care for the reserve. Responsibilities include planting, weed and predator control. “It’s up to us to look after and protect this space and everyone is welcome to come along,” says group member Alison Pickford.

Driver of van which killed horse describes ‘scary moment’ TRACY NEAL Open Justice Reporter
The driver of a newspaper delivery van who hit and killed a horse on a state highway has described the moment of impact as being “very scary”. “I tried to swerve but hit it. It was a thud. I really felt it,” driver Joseph Martin told a court on Friday. Martin was giving evidence at a hearing in the Nelson District Court over a couple charged with causing criminal nuisance for allegedly failing to properly fence a property. Murchison couple Luke King and Emma Polaschek had earlier admitted a charge of endangering life or public safety after the accident which wrote off Martin’s van on 13 July, 2020, but later vacated the plea. The trial, heard by a judge alone, has now been adjourned to late June to decide if there is a case to answer. It was the depths of winter and Martin was doing the late-night newspaper and mail run between Christchurch and Nelson. He’d left Christchurch at 10.30pm and at about 3am on 13 July, he was between Murchison and Springs Junction, travelling at 98km/h.
He noticed a shadow, switched his lights on high beam, and saw a horse. Martin said in a split-second the horse, which had been on the left of his van, was suddenly in front of him. “It felt like the horse was galloping towards me,” he said in response to why he hadn’t stopped. After the impact, Martin stopped, put on his hazard lights and walked back to find the animal dead on the side of the road. The horse was later described by a neighbouring farmer, who gave evidence at the hearing, as a Clydesdale. “It was pitch black, but I could see it was wearing a coat, like a tarpaulin,” Martin said. There was no cellphone coverage in the area, so Martin waved down a following vehicle, and was driven back to Murchison where he phoned his employer, and the police were then contacted. Judge Rielly said in adjourning the case that it presented a “unique set of facts” and was of a type not frequently before the court. The defence would now file submissions on whether there was a case to answer. A no case submission was made when the defence considered that the prosecution case did not support a finding of guilt. International students returning to region JENNY NICHOLSON Local colleges are preparing to welcome back international students in July, however, the landscape will look very different from previous years. Pre-Covid, Waimea College had about 100 students enrolled over a 12-month period. This year they will be limited to just 10 students. While borders are opening for visitors, they currently remain closed to those wanting to study other than an exemption for 5000 students. The majority of the exemptions are for tertiary education, with just 1000 places allocated to college students. “Schools were invited to apply for places. Waimea College has 13 International Student applications who are seeking a July 2022 start, so we made applications for all 13 places,” principal Scott Haines says. “We were successful in being allocated 10 places and we look forward to these students starting with us from term three.” He says that while it is pleasing that international students are returning, there is significant work
ahead to rebuild to pre-Covid levels. Currently there are just six international students at Waimea College. Waimea College international manager Hayley Roper says she knows of other schools that were allocated 10 students regardless of how many they applied for. “We are happy we could get our 10 but it was disappointing for the students and agents that missed out.” Garin College principal John Maguire says they have applications from students and are in the process of engaging with agents and responding to inquiries. They are likely to have four or five international students arrive in terms 3 and 4. Nayland College assistant principal Gavin Millar says they currently have just one international student and are looking forward to 10 arriving in July. Seven are arriving from Germany, two from Norway and one from Japan. He says they have had many students from Norway in the past and find their personalities fit well with New Zealanders.

Easter bunnies come to Hope JO KENT The annual bunny hunt at Gardens of the World in Hope has been cancelled this year, but kids can still grab a free knitted bunny from the front kiosk over Easter. Owner Paddy Day says that everything was in place to go ahead with the hunt, but the uncertainty surrounding volunteer numbers means it would be impossible to run. “We can’t do it because we had over 600 people here last year. With people self-isolating left, right and centre, it was impossible to know if we’d have enough helpers available on the day.” Despite having to shelve the event, the knitted bunnies will still be making an appearance over the Easter break. “A local lady called Lois Plummer kindly makes hundreds of bunnies for us during the year, which she does especially for the Easter hunt. We still want children to come along and grab one, but it will just be a case of taking one from the basket at the front kiosk rather than actually doing the hunt.” Paddy knows lot of people will be disappointed as the event has become a family tradition for locals since it was set up a decade ago. 9 March 2022 The Treasure of Kindness game, which ran in conjunction with Parks Week and Tasman District Council earlier this month was a huge success. Community partnerships officer Yulia Panfylova says there was a tremendous turnout with lots of uplifting messages left. “Some of the cards the children put in the treasure chests were really creative and so lovely to read. They put so much effort into them.” Sadly, the box left in Easby Park was stolen twice, as was the one at Washbourn Gardens. “The one at Bill Wilkes Reserve was trashed and thrown into the river, but we did manage to capture a few of the cards before vandals ruined the game towards the end of the week.”

Photo: Jo Kent. when their own kids were small and wanted other families to have something fun to do. “The delight on the kids faces is lovely to see, so I’ve kept it going ever since.” The event was postponed in 2020 after Covid struck the first time and was held in July instead. “The problem with that was a lot of kids had weekend sports, so numbers were down. That’s why we’ve decided to just scrap it this year and
resume in 2023.” The bunny hunt is the garden’s main fundraiser with ticket sales going towards the upkeep of the six acre space. “We are weighing up the idea of maybe doing some kind of light up display later in the year to generate income, but we’re really struggling with visitor numbers since the pandemic started, so I’m not sure that will happen.” The knitted bunnies will be available from Friday.

23 February 2022 Thanks to the story in the Waimea Weekly, Tabby’s Kitten Rescues has been in the spotlight again, this time on local radio station The Breeze. Fiona, who voluntarily runs the rescue and rehoming service, says she was approached after they read her story in the newspaper. “I don’t really like all the publicity as I’m a shy person, but I’m doing it to raise awareness about desexing pets to reduce the number of homeless cats and kittens that end up living in the wild.” Since the story ran, she’s also received some donations of money, food and toys for her strays. “Everything helps and I’m so grateful to each and every person who supports me.” To help, find her Facebook page.

Anniversary rejoicings ROBYN PARKES Twenty-five years after the settling of the Nelson district, the residents of Waimea South and Waimea West celebrated in their respective districts. As the 1st of February fell in the middle of harvesting it was resolved to defer the day’s holiday until the harvest was secured and therefore the date of 28th February was decided. In Wakefield, about 1,400 people, including schoolchildren, collected on the Wakefield Cricket Ground and passed in procession waving flags and accompanied by a brass band, to a beautifully wooded section above the Forest
Inn on the Foxhill Road. Here, a rotunda had been erected and entertainment through music, dancing and games continued throughout the day. Cricket, jumping, leaping, hurling the bar, hammer throwing, rounders, foot racing and many other sports were enjoyed by the public. Lottery draws attracted much attention at which purchasers of sixpenny tickets became possessors of prices valued from one shilling to fourteen shillings. In Waimea West, also on the 28th of February, Mr Tomlinson had volunteered the use of one of his large paddocks and people arrived in numbers by vehicle, foot and horse.

folded wheelbarrow races across a swamp were held with much merriment. At Richmond, celebrations were held on the 13th of March at an early hour with a large number of the oldest settlers in the district, accompanied by their families, assembling at Richmond, bent upon enjoying the preparations which had been made by the committee. Settlers from Hope, Ranzau, Appleby and the surrounding areas gathered to join in the celebrations. A procession, headed by the OddFellows, started from the Agricultural Hall at 11 o’clock, followed by a long train of children and a good representation of the early settlers of the province. As with the previous celebrations, sports and games were a large part of the day’s events. At 5pm, at least 700 persons sat down to a tea and at 8pm a display of fireworks took place. The final event of the day was dancing in the hall, continuing well into the night.

Opinion Huge rate increase for Tasman So, given all the high value new properties that have come into being in recent times, isn’t the TDC getting a large increase in the dollar value of the rates being collected from these? I’m the first to admit deferral of maintenance expenditure is a false economy long term so don’t cut that. But are there projects which are nice to have but by no means essential? Maybe defer those? And how much of the estimates increase is due to the shambles that was the foreseeable underbudgeting for the dam project? This Sunday is called Psalm Sunday in the Christian Calendar. It marks the Sunday before Easter. Those that were waiting for the Messiah to come cheered for Him and yelled out “Blessed is He who comes in the Name of the Lord!” They spread cloaks and psalms at His feet as they would a King seated on a mighty stallion, entering a city after a Victorious battle. They thought Him a warrior Messiah who came to defeat their oppressors. Instead, hopes of that nature were dashed, when Jesus ar-
rives as a humble servant Son of God, astride a colt of a lowly donkey, The favoured animal of the Israelites which symbolized peace in contrast to the horse, a symbol of power, wealth and warfare. When the cheering stopped, fleeing victory gave way to permanent defeat. Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem marked the first step in that short journey to His trial. Physical punishment, mental agony at feeling alone and abandoned, physical suffering, and government sponsored unjust death on a cross,
a pacifist’s death. But the story found in the Gospels didn’t end here. Jesus rose again on the third day. So, we could experience Life and Life in all its fullness. When I think of all these things I am thankful for God’s mercy, His unmerited favour. I am grateful for His gift of Jesus, my Saviour. I am thankful for His grace in my life and the forgiveness of my sin. My prayer is that however you spend Easter this year may you know that God’s gift was for you.

Council proposes changes in building consent charges

John Reardon captured a rare glimpse of the Aurora Australis at Nelson Lakes on Thursday 31 March. “I was fortunate that there were three other photographers drawn here by the Aurora alert, which suggested that night would be a good night to try for any possible aurora. It was a perfect night, calm with very little cloud and no moon. As camp host for DOC at Kerr Bay, as soon as they started to pick up the aurora I was able to grab my camera and tripod and was thrilled to get a few photos of it.” He says the aurora lasted for over an hour at around 10pm.
JENNY NICHOLSON The Tasman District Council is proposing a change to how it charges for some new building consents. In the past, building consents for new builds valued at over $500,000 were charged by the hour. Now the council is proposing a fixed fee replace the hourly charge as part of the fees and charges in the 2022/2023 draft annual plan that is out for public consultation. Building consents for dwellings with a build value of less than $500,000 are already charged a fixed fee. “Over the past six months, 339 building consents have been issued and the predominant value of the build has been in the $300,000 to $500,000 range,” TDC communications manager Chris Choat says. One of the main changes to building consents in the past ten years is the number of multiunit dwellings consented. In the year ended February 2013 just three were issued, compared to 76 this year with 12 in the month of February alone. Multi-unit homes include apartments, retirement village units, town houses, flats, and units. Chris says that over the past year, building consents for multi-unit dwellings have been evenly spread between retirement villages and those for multi-units on one section. Poppy Day appeal marks 100 years of support ahead of ANZAC Day On April 25, 1915, New Zealand and Australian troops stood side by side as allies set out to capture the Gallipoli Peninsula in Turkey, during the First World War. Their aim was to secure the Dardanelles, the gateway to the Bosphorus and the Black Sea. These volunteer troops proudly became known as ANZACS – Australian New Zealand Army Corps –and the soldiers that fought during the campaign were known throughout the army camps as courageous and brave comrades, with goodhumoured and honourable souls. The date marks the anniversary of the Gallipoli landings but we, as a nation, commemorate the contributions of all those who have served in the armed forces, those who were injured in combat, and those who sacrificed their lives for our country. ANZAC Day ceremonies are held at war memorials both nationwide and overseas and continue to be steeped in tradition and rituals ‘befitting a military funeral’. The first Dawn
Service was held in 1923 and the ‘Last Post’, which was typically played during the war to signal the soldiers that the day’s fighting had come to an end, is now played at memorial services to indicate their duty is fulfilled and they can rest in peace. An important part of remembering our armed service people is to ensure ongoing care and support for those who are still involved with the organisations today. This month marks 100 years since the Poppy appeal first began and this year will be the Royal New Zealand Returned and Services Associations (RSA) biggest campaign yet. New Zealand is the only country to wear a poppy on ANZAC Day, most other countries wear a sprig of Rosemary. In France, 1920, ‘The Poppy Lady of France’ Madame Guérin conceived the idea of ‘Inter-Allied Poppy Day’ to remember the fallen. The Flanders Poppy became an international symbol of remembrance. She approached veterans’ groups in other countries, urging them to take up the practice. However,

the shipment of over 375,000 handmade poppies did not arrive in time for the NZ Armistice celebrations and the NZRSA decided to incorporate the significant gesture on ANZAC Day 1922, where it has remained a tradition ever since. Barry Pont, the key organiser of Nelson’s Poppy Day, is a Vietnam veteran and has served on the Nelson RSA committee for 33 years. He says the volunteer teams will be out in force in the Nelson Tasman region on Friday, April 22, appealing to the public for support of its RSA members and their dependents. Richmond Waimea RSA president, John Llewellin, says the Richmond, Brightwater and Wakefield communities will see tables set up in the Richmond Mall, along Queen St, outside Kmart and by Raewards for people wishing to make contributions and purchase their poppy in time for ANZAC Day. “Tables will also be set-up in Brightwater and Wakefield communities. “We are lucky enough to have a really good relationship with the council. They have been fantastic every year, where they provide traffic management for the parade and ensure the gardens are looking immaculate for the services.” John says the local Scouts have been a part of the ANZAC celebrations on many occasions and will be contributing again this year by placing poppies on the graves of RSA veterans in the Richmond Cemetery, both in the RSA section and the general section on April 21, “It is wonderful for them to be a part of it and learn about our history and the stories of these people. Ever wondered what eggs have to do with Easter?
Eggs have long been a symbol of new life, and the tradition of giving eggs at Easter was adopted by Mesopotamian Christians as early as the 13th century. They stained eggs red in memory of Jesus’ blood, shed at his crucifixion. The hard shell of the egg represented the sealed tomb, the cracking open of which symbolised Jesus' resurrection from the grave. During Lent (the lead up to Easter) early Christians temporarily gave up meat, cheese, milk, and eggs, so they boiled their eggs for practical reasons. The hardboiled eggs would last longer and could be distributed to those in need at Easter.
The giving of eggs at Easter continued for centuries, and by Victorian times, had become a tradition for children with egg hunts, decorating, competitions, and games. By the first half of the 20th century the working classes had well and truly adopted the idea of egg exchanges with chocolate creations becoming a favourite. men through Mana Whānau JENNY NICHOLSON After twenty years of abuse, Adele Keefe embarked on a journey of healing and now works with women to empower them to find freedom. Through the Mana Wāhine Charitable Trust, she runs courses for women. Working alongside women recovering from trauma, Adele was approached by men asking where they could get help. “Men were coming to us, and we had nothing for them.” Seeing the need to help the whole whanau prompted a change to the Charitable trust which is now formally
called Mana Whānau. “When the wāhine and the tāne rise, then the whole whānau rises and the generations to come,” Adele says. While the formal aspect of the course for women is run inside a building, Mapu Harrison mentors men outdoors while doing something active. “Our tāne open up more when they are doing men’s stuff like hunting, diving and fishing,” Adele says. “If we provide a safe space for men to talk, they can open up rather than harden up.” She says it’s often easier for women to open up, but if a safe space is provided for men to talk, they can open up. “When we speak out

JENNY NICHOLSON As children fleeing the war in Ukraine arrive at the train station in Poznan, Poland, they are offered hotdogs financed through Nelson’s generosity. Nelson Hospital oncologist Anna Wojtachs found herself feeling increasingly sad over the news from Ukraine. Hearing friends from her hometown in Poland were meeting trains twice a day, supplying food paid for from their own pockets, she wanted to help. So she started a Givealittle page to help raise funds. “I am amazed at the generosity of people in Nelson,” Anna says. “In just a few weeks we have raised $11,000 and some of the funds I have sent to Poland have been used to provide hotdogs.” Anna says although it is only spring, it’s cold in Poland and people are grateful for hot food as they arrive. “Hotdogs are amazing for the children,” Anna says. “The hotdogs are handed out under the New Zealand flag. It feels like we have done something, even from far away.” She says, as Ukrainians get through the border they are taken care of, not by the Polish government but simply by people who want to help.
“There are lots of people wanting to help,” she says. “However, by day 33 they are getting physically and emotionally exhausted.” Many of the 2 million women, children and elderly fleeing to Poland are escaping cities and villages that have been destroyed. Anna says quite a few of them have already lost loved ones, while others are leaving fathers and husbands to fight, not knowing if they will see them again. “Within hours their lives have been changed forever,” she says. “ Anna says those from cities in Ukraine often have contacts in other parts of Europe and simply pass through Poland. “It’s the people from the villages that are staying in our city,” she says. “They are running away to our city and don’t know what to do.” Regardless of whether they are just passing through or are staying, all are offered food. Anna says every dollar that is raised through the Givealittle will be sent to her friends and spent on items that are needed for refugees to simply survive. Stoke beat a resilient Waimea Old Boys side to come away with the team’s first win of the season, 37-19. In the other games of the weekend, Marist toppled Nelson in a bruising 66-0 affair at Trafalgar Park and Kahurangi grinded out a 29-20 win over Wanderers at Cooks Reserve. Despite a returning James Lash for his 50th game, WOB didn’t have the firepower to overcome their much stronger opponents. James says getting back on the field had been a long time coming, having been unable to play all of last season with injury. “It was all a matter of when, but it’s good to get it ticked off. “It’s good to come in at my old age and see some of these younger boys who will be the next generation, and to be a
bit of a mentor.” His presence brought composure to the Waimea backline, but the team struggled to connect the dots at times with several late call-ins. Stoke controlled large portions of the game and were quick to answer back when they conceded points, but it was far from a perfect performance. Both teams looked to push the pace and unforced errors started to creep into the game with exhaustion playing a factor. Stoke number 8 Tevita Koloamatangi had a dominant performance, impressing with strong ball running that consistently got his team on the front foot. Waimea flanker Daniel Hytongue was also impressive, earning several turnovers at critical times to keep his team in the game. Stoke coach Joe Kirker says that while

it was good to get the win, they made it harder for themselves than they needed to. “We struggled to build phases and some of our option taking was lacking.” He says the way they were able to band together and respond with positive rugby was exciting for the season ahead. “The boys were backing what they could do. We’re confident in our own game and when we got back to that we found success.” WOB coach Scott McKenzie said they were right in the game, but their execution let them down. “It was a bit sloppy, but we certainly had enough opportunities. All we needed to do is bank one more try in the first half and we would have been right in it.” He says they didn’t want to make excuses but had struggled to find continuity with new players coming in. “There’s some great young colt boys stepping up. The effort was there, we just didn’t have the structure.” Scott also wanted to congratulate James on his fiftieth game, saying he’s an important part of the club’s identity. This weekend Marist will be eagerly looking to continue building momentum as they play Kahurangi at home, Nelson will look to right last Saturday’s wrongs as they take on Stoke and Waimea Old Boys travel over the bridge to play Wanderers in Brightwater. With little to no crowd able to attend the speedway a lot of the meetings were cancelled, and a handful were raced mainly to give our competitors somewhere to race during these hard times, albeit with no crowd which is the club’s main source of income.

Then on the second night we finish with the Demolition Derby which is always one of the crowd favourites. It has been near impossible to get any North Island competitors here due to ferry restrictions, but we do have a lot of visiting drivers and riders from all over the South Island including Christchurch, Blenheim, and Greymouth, which make the on-track action hotter than ever. There are even a handful of Derby cars heading up from Christchurch to compete in the Demolition Derby. Now that is
commitment to a tee! All classes will race over two nights for their Easter championships except for the Superstocks who will compete for the open club championship one night and the Easter Championship the next. The new swim coach at Richmond Aquatic Centre says he has big aspirations in his new role. “I want to build Tasman back up to one of the strongest clubs in the country,” says Shaun Foley. He says he isn’t daunted by the task ahead after rebuilding the swimming programme at Papakura Swimming Club from dire straits to a celebrated club. Shaun, who still holds the New Zealand SM8 open 400m individual medley record, says he wants to give back to those who gave him so much. Having been born with an upper arm deformity, he says swimming was where he could go and be himself. It didn’t take long for his dedication to be noticed, breaking three age-grade records at his first nationals and being scouted as a Paralympic hopeful. “Paralympics New Zealand said ‘we want you on our pathway to the 2000 Olympics’.” Despite missing out on his Olympic dreams by a fraction of a margin, Shaun represented New Zealand twice under Paralympics New Zealand. In 1999 he earned two golds, two silvers and three bronzes at the Australian Junior Wheelchair games, before win-
ning bronze in the 200 individual medley at the World Wheelchair games in Christchurch. Shaun says he always wanted to be a swim coach and give back to the sport that has given him so much. As a coach, he says his role is to guide young swimmers in developing their skills alongside their growing bodies. “I’m a coach who’s there for all my athletes. I coach everyone the same.” One of the first changes he wants to implement is creating a clear pathway from the learn-to-swim school through to the elite programme. “The stronger the team, the stronger we are. The goal is not just results, but the structure and attitude of the club.” The club currently has 44 members, but he says they want to see that number double to at least 90 or 100. Shaun also has plans to get involved with para-swimming in the region, saying he wants to give back to those who gave to him. “It’s close to me because that’s where I swam.” One of his proudest achievements was watching a para-swimmer he coached go down the same path he had and earn qualification to the Commonwealth Games.

Much loved and jovial sisterin-law of Raymond and Debbie (Richmond), Darryl and Lesley (Mapua), Kerry (Richmond) and all her Westcoast outlaws and extended family throughout the country. Fond Auntie and great Auntie to all her nieces and nephews. Special thanks to St John Ambulance Staff, the Richmond Fire Brigade and the staff in Nelson Hospital ICU, and to the incredibly wonderful support network and people that have been on this journey with us over the years.
