We were spoilt for choice this Labour Weekend in Waikino! Not only did we have the annual Art Waikino spectacle, but this year Waikino School added more to the experience. Art Waikino was started in 2000 by former resident Helen Wilson, and is now a loved celebration of local artists
The rest of the area is following suit, with art and pottery exhibitions in Waihi I think we can safely say we are an art destination for Labour Weekend in Aotearoa, and I hope it continues As well as locals, artists from around the country send their art works to be displayed in the hope of a sale. A browse of the books in the small hall was an added bonus, as was the coffee served up by the lovely Kate Mead
Waikino School's sculpture trail showcased some amazing reuse of materials from our youngest budding creatives On Saturday, the school put on wood fired pizzas which went down a treat, and on Sunday visitors enjoyed high tea in the picturesque gardens. Our own Dan Wheway's sculptural piece took the well deserved People's Choice Award
The Clear as Mud Pottery Show in the Waihi Arts Centre & Museum was a hit with young and old, and the Waihi Memorial Hall topped off the absolute Art Feast. Mark the calendar for 2023.
Shout out to the dedicated teachers and parents who volunteered at the school, community members volunteering at the hall, and Kate at Waikino Books & Coffee shop for supplying coffee for all those working hard!
November is a glorious month in the garden; the days are getting longer, the soils are moist, and temperatures are warming up There is still plenty of time to get your summer veggies in. In fact, it's probably a bonus if you haven't planted out your heat loving crops just yet, as we were all taken by surprise with a couple of late frosts recently typical Spring with a sting in its tail!
Capsicums, chillies, tomatoes, zucchini and cucumber all need a minimum of 13 degrees at night and 18 degree soil temperature, these guys definitely don't appreciate a rocky start to life outdoors.
At this time of the year there is a balance between waiting for winter crops to come to their natural end and finding space for new seedlings. My advice is to cull only when you need the room Crops going to flower provide food for the bees and leaving a few to go to seed completely will provide fresh seed to save, which will be more adapted to your soil and environmental conditions You can plant new between older crops, which provide shelter for tender seedlings Try not to yank out old plants when clearing garden beds as this disturbs precious soil biology. Simply cut off crops at ground level, leaving roots in the soil to break down and feed the next Plant around the old root systems and make compost with the spent crops.
Spring is the season when salads really thrive. November is perfect for lettuce, leafy greens, such as silverbeet, pak choy, spinach, sorrel and fennel, and herbs like rocket, coriander, mizuna, parsley, dill and chives. Plant every 2 3 weeks for a continuous supply and into shady areas as the summer progresses If you are planting brassicas (broccoli, cauliflower, kale and cabbages), these should be netted with a fine insect mesh to keep out the cabbage white butterflies
Sow root crops such as spring onions, beetroot, radish, parsnip, potatoes and it's the last optimal month for carrots. Sweetcorn, beans and kumara tipu can all go out and it's definitely time to get your zucchini, squash, cucumber, tomatoes, chillies, basil, pumpkin, melon and aubergine going indoors. Plant plenty of flowers for the bees: sweet peas, poppies, nasturtiums, cosmos, sunflowers, echinacea, snapdragons, zinnia, marigolds, calendula, cornflowers and salvia.
Warmer weather and increased humidity brings in new bugs Having biodiversity in your garden, plenty of flowers and letting things go to seed will all bring in beneficial insects to help sort out pesky bugs Remain vigilant with night patrols for slugs and snails
