Meri Kirihimete

Welcome to the silly season, and our last issue for 2022. We're happy to be celebrating one year since we took over the Whisper, and the end of 2022 By the time you read this, summer will have kicked in, surely! I can't say I was surprised when Dave Cole provided November's rainfall readings 301mm the wettest November in 10 years! The silver lining is that our rivers and water tanks will be nice and full for a hot summer ahead, fingers crossed.

This issue we've focused on local businesses to show how much Christmas shopping can be done near home We have so much to offer in the area Local markets are always good to get some crafty (and tasty) gifts I bought the most delicious smoked onion jam at the recent Waikino Market which was devoured by our family in less than a week

2022 has seen us struggle with the costs of printing and distribution. When we took over we made the call to reduce the frequency of issues, and moved to mainly online publishing with a limited number of hard copies

We're happy to tell you that from January 2023 we'll be back to monthly issues, and even better, we'll be back to the pre pandemic days of delivering to the 3682 postcode!

With monthly issues we will need your stories, poems, and events contributions more than ever These really help us pull the issue together if we don't know about it we can't publish it! If you have something to say, or an event to promote, please get in touch This is your community magazine and we want to hear your voice.

On a sadder note, we lost a loved local in November All our support goes out to Karen, Owen, Casey, Grace, Wendelin and Stanley. Casey has written a lovely piece for this issue to honour her brother Luke's life. Ka aroha hoki, we wrap our arms around you at this time

Luke was born in Waihi in 1983, and was raised in Waikino. He then spent most of his adult life in the village as well It was the place where he was raising two wonderful children, Wendelin and Stanley It was home Many of those who hold Luke in their heart, and have supported us over the past couple of weeks, are connected to Waikino and the surrounding areas as well

He was a son, brother, uncle, nephew, cousin, dad and a friend to many. Luke was a talented welder, he loved to tinker and was a fixer of many His skills and knowledge were often used to help others a busy man who still said yes when asked He had a love of vehicles, which resulted in him owning a Model T Ford, a XP Falcon, a crane, motorbikes and many more

On Monday, 14 November, we celebrated Luke’s life with his family, friends and the wider Waikino community at the Waikino Hall, and later continued at the School of Mines.

heart

From the moment Luke shared Simple Man by Lynyrd Skynyrd with me, over 16 years ago, this was my wish for him. Lukey definitely lived life, a life that had many twists and turns, and moments of wonder and awe. Charisma, knowledge, vision, passion and skill; he had it all Many would say he personified Waikino

A special mention of Mike O’Donnell is needed The invaluable role he played in supporting us all on our healing journey and for creating space for us all to share the special place Luke played in our lives will never be forgotten

As a family, we also want to thank everyone for the awhi and aroha that they have extended towards us. It has been heartwarming and greatly appreciated.

Luke lived his life to the fullest and had a bloody good time He will live on in his beautiful children, Wendelin Jane and Stanley Ray, and we will keep his memory alive for them

A message from Luke's Mum, "Fly High my boy Keep smiling, sing to your heart's content, play your awesome music and enjoy a Heineken, or 10…"

LOVE YOU LUKE. Forever and Always. Rest Easy xoxo

A brief candle both ends burning

An endless mile, a bus wheel turning

A friend to share a lonesome time

A handshake and a sip of wine

Say it loud and let it ring

That we're all part of everything

YOUR GUIDE TO A MORE

SUSTAINABLE CHRISTMAS

There are many ways to a more environmentally friendly Christmas, like reusing paper bags or wrapping material, saying adios to the tradition of Christmas crackers, shopping second hand, making decorations from nature, or buying experiences as gifts instead of things. Whichever way you do Christmas, we've put together some ideas that can make you feel good, and help to reduce our impact on the planet

You can't get more local than locally made items Supporting other local businesses will keep your money in our community, and you might get other benefits too.

Just a few of the buy local benefits:

You get to meet the people who are running businesses and making quality items in our area

Buying locally means no boxing up, packaging or wrapping is required You can say no to extra packaging Just bring your own reusable bags, and you're good to go

When you buy local, your money stays local. Business owners shop too and they might buy from you next When shops are busy they need more staff! Buying locally supports job creation, and where are those employees going to spend their money?

You may not be a climate warrior, but avoiding that trip to Tauranga or Hamilton for the big Christmas shop will save you petrol money!

The planet will thank you buying locally made items means the products didn't have far to travel

Buying local isn't just for Christmas time It can be a case of use it or lose it. Our local businesses need us to help them through quiet seasons If we're taking our money out of town, we could end up with empty shops, and that's not great for any of us

HIDDEN GOLD He kura huna * Buying Local by Sarah Holmes Local Honey makers Golden Cross Honey also make these gorgeous beeswax candles

Being nestled between Paeroa and Waihi, we are fortunate to have many options of really fabulous retail shops to choose from this xmas. Say goodbye to online shopping and hello to supporting local retail. Here are a few of our suggestions and picks for a local christmas.

LATE NIGHT SHOPPING

WAIHI FRIDAY, 23 DECEMBER TILL 8PM

Shoppers will find it even easier to shop local this Christmas with late night shopping available from Waihi retailers. GO Waihi's annual late night shopping evening is ideal for those last minute shoppers, or those who work out of town and have just struggling to find the time to do their Christmas shopping

Let's make it a really festive night there will be Christmas music pumping, Santa's elves, spot prizes, and the ever popular 'Shop n Win' where any purchases made on 23 Dec will put you in the draw to win. Come and join the Christmas fun!

A selection of retailers are also opening their doors late on Wednesday 14th and Thursday 22nd of December, so be sure to pop into Waihi for all your gift giving.

Come and join the Christmas fun

Vanessa's picks

Our Waikino local Audrey at Audrey & Flora can provide gorgeous floral arrangements for events and Christmas day, but also has plants, candles, crystals and more to give as presents. Sassy Sadie also has lots of little gifts that are perfect stocking fillers along with candles, gorgeous clothing and jewellery Buckles and Tees leather shop is where I got my versatile over the shoulder little purse I couldn't do without it Diamonds on Seddon have a fabulous assortment of gifts and xmas decorations plus the beautiful jewellery Thats just Waihi! Paeroa also has lots of lovely clothing, gift and antique shops Second hand is always a winner with sustainability

Sarah's picks

I tend towards experiences or low waste gifts, often easier said than done when you have young children! For the kids I love to look second hand first I frequently find gems at the Hauraki Repair and Reuse Centre in Paeroa or St Johns Opportunity Shops in Waihi and Paeroa Last Christmas I received a pottery lesson from Laughing Pottery in Waihi It was a daunting but fun experience Now I have a cute set of bowls and a mug to show for it For people who need a treat and don't take much time for themselves, a voucher from Ardor Beauty can give them permission For my Christmas day groceries, I always get great service from New World Waihi, and I love that the Click and Collect is free It creates jobs locally, and gives me more time to write articles for the Waikino Whisper!

Unused decorations, berries and herbs all can bring a present wrapping session to life

Happy December. It hasn't however been feeling very summery! The water tanks are at least overflowing, a luxury for this time of the year, but sunshine hours have been in short supply and crops are taking a little longer to get cranking.

Focusing on regular seaweed foliar feeds, protecting soils with mulch and sourcing stakes for tomatoes, climbing beans and sunflowers are all good jobs to keep up with until things warm up and the garden really takes off

If you are still planting out, here are the basics; tomatoes, zucchini, cucumber, sweetcorn, watermelon, pumpkin and squash all need to be in well fed and mulched beds Chillies and capsicums like full all day sun, whereas lettuces, spinach, asian greens, mizuna, rocket and coriander prefer to be in the shade On a dry day remember to take off tomato laterals (those new shoots that appear in the crook of the main stem and a leaf) to ensure good airflow

Kumara tipu, potatoes and carrots (as long as you can keep them regularly watered for the 2 weeks they take to germinate) can still go in this month. The ideal week for root crops is just after the full moon from the 11th Dec Plant plenty of flowers for the bees; calendula, cornflowers, marigolds, poppies, nasturtiums, cosmos, sunflowers, echinacea, snapdragons, zinnia, and salvia

Check your garlic, if half of the leaves are browning off, it's likely to be ready Dig one up to check I could cry, my garlic is showing signs of rust! I've been nervously watching it in this rain and humidity If the bulbs are nearly ready, I'll gently pull it out and burn the foliage. For those worried about rust, regular raw milk foliar sprays can keep it to a minimum

much of a chance we ll run out this summer!) and two, some things like regular watering (all new seedlings, tomatoes, celery and lettuces), others less. Tomatoes, zucchini and cucumber don't like wet leaves, so water the soil instead of the plant. Thirsty as well as overwatered plants are stressed plants and can be more susceptible to disease. Check moisture levels in your soils by pressing your fingers into the soil before watering don't if it still feels moist. Keep sprayers and watering cans at the ready for regular liquid worm juice or seaweed feeds. A monthly feed around the full moon is an excellent habit to get into to keep things humming.

Mulch is critical at this time of the year for conserving moisture in your soils, suppressing weeds and forming a blanket for precious soil biology. Y bare soils with close plan as a “living mulch”, other untreated sawdust or hom from spent crops or herb trimmings can be placed plants

Keep your eyes peeled for stink bugs, fluffy bums and aphids and deal with them on the spot with squishing, blasting with the hose, spraying with soapy water or adding neem oil to your foliar feed.

Wishing you all a safe and happy festive season!
