Editor’s Message

Hey Everyone!

I apologize that this newsletter is so late. I just reopened it and realized that it was last edited exactly a month ago. I thought that I had finished and published it but I guess that I did not. December was a very eventful month for me. I had to finish many college applications at the last minute and that was not very fun. Despite that, a highlight of my month was the Kiwanis Family Christmas Social. Our Lieutenant Governor Kainalu happened to be in Hilo and attended the social. That, along with getting to see other members of our Kiwanis Family was very enjoyable. After the social, I had the privilege of taking the cards made to the Legacy Nursing Home along with Cain Ross (Hilo Key Club president) and Kainalu . The residents of the center were very thankful for the amazing cards that everyone made and it was nice to see the results of the project.

December 5, 2019

On December 5, 2019, our Key Club worked with other service organizations at our school at Santa’s Workshop. Santa’s Workshop is an event for students from our feeder elementary schools to buy inexpensive Christmas presents for their families. The Key Clubbers worked as personal shoppers and gift wrappers. The personal shoppers worked with a student to guide them through the cafeteria to locate presents while the gift wrappers wrapped the gifts. It was a very enjoyable project as the students were adorable and they loved the event.

December 21, 2019

This past weekend on December 21st, some of our members helped out on the Waiakea Intermediate School color run. In the morning, they helped set up tents, registration forms, and prizes. Many of the students got to spray colors on the kids during the 1.5 and 3-mile fun run. It was a rainy day, which made the colors even more vibrant. There were many prizes, such as lunch bags, socks, toys, and more! Snacks and drinks were provided as well. All the funds made were to Sunrise Athletics, a non-profit organization that helps elementary to high school runners school run during off-seasons. After hours of work, it was worth watching all the children have a blast! - Katana Lester

December 22, 2019 At our Kiwanis Family Christmas Party we did several things to strengthen bonds between all branches of our Kiwanis family. All clubs were invited to our library where we did icebreakers, games, and a service project where we made holiday cards for Legacy Hilo Rehabilitation & Nursing Center, a local organization. After the social, a couple Key Clubbers from Waiakea and Hilo, along with the Kiwanis of East Hawaii President and our LTG delivered the cards to the residents of Legacy.

Meet the Executive Board Division Leadership Team By Division Assistant Carina Cook (This is not an Executive Board position but as Conclave and elections are quickly approaching I would like to highlight the Division Leadership Team)

The Division Leadership Team (DLT) is a group of individuals from all 3 islands who are appointed to assist the Lieutenant Governor (LTG). Positions include Division Assistants, Division News Editor and several task coordinator positions that change from year to year. The DLT assists with events (OTC, RTC, HCON, etc). I have served on the Division Leadership Team for two terms (Technology Coordinator 2018-19 and Division Assistant 2019-20). It is a fun experience that has many leadership opportunities and allowed me to learn more about the division, to communicate with DLT members from the other islands on a consistent basis, and to get to know the Lieutenant Governor better. If anyone has any questions about DLT or the Division, please let me or any other DLT member know.
