This seal conveys to our donors, community partners, staff, and board our commitment to sound policies, accountability, and better positions us to promote philanthropy, connect donors to causes they care about, and provide leadership on important community issues.”

Change is inevitable, and 2023 was no exception, both throughout Watertown and at the Foundation. Yet, our simple and powerful adage of Looking Forward and Giving Back continues to ring resoundingly true.
As we constantly look to adapt and respond to the ever-changing needs of our community, know that together we are making life better today while shaping brighter tomorrows for the Watertown area.
Thank you for your investment in the future of Watertown and the Watertown Area Community Foundation. Thank you for joining us in Looking Forward and Giving Back.

In 2004, Women & Giving was created to educate and inspire women to become leaders in philanthropy.
Thanks to the passionate generosity of Women & Giving donors, the program continues to succeed in its mission to help area women and children overcome barriers, increase their opportunities, and achieve their goals.
“We are building a community of women who are going to excel and go out and make this world a better place.”
– Sandy Albertsen, Women & Giving Advisory Committee Member
The first Women & Giving campaign raised $1,000.
The first Women & Giving Scholarship was awarded for $500.
The 5th annual Women & Giving campaign raised $8,150.
The Women & Giving Endowment Fund was established. The fund earnings are contributed to the granting budget each year.
Supporters donated a record $48,000 during the first-ever virtual fundraiser.
Nearly $27,000 was raised at the 15th Anniversary Celebration.
Women & Giving celebrated its 10th Anniversary. In its first decade, Women & Giving awarded over $75,000 in grants and scholarships.
Program supporters visited several grant recipients to learn first-hand the impact of their gifts.
2023

To honor the 20-year anniversary of Women & Giving, Laurie Benson, former Foundation Board Member and Women & Giving Advisory Committee Member designated a $20,000 gift to the Women & Giving Endowment Fund.
“The Women & Giving program has had a phenomenal impact in its first 20 years. More importantly, this program will continue giving back to future generations of area women and children as the emphasis was placed on building the endowment fund. What a legacy for the women of Watertown!”
-Laurie Benson, former WACF Board Member
The H20-20 community visioning process identified a need for a central public space with a focus on downtown beautification. To meet this need, the WACF Board unanimously voted to support the downtown investment. The Watertown Kiwanis Club sponsored a splash pad, adaptive play equipment was made possible by the Watertown Optimist Club, and a fully-equipped, ready to rock-and-roll band shell was provided by Watertown’s Rotary Club.
As part of the Foundation’s 40th Anniversary celebration in late 2019, then former WACF Board Chairman Charlie Ewalt presented then Mayor of Watertown Sarah Caron with a $500,000 grant to support the construction of a downtown park.
A groundbreaking ceremony was held on May 2, 2022 at the future site of Foundation Plaza on East Kemp Avenue. Although it was a chilly day, excitement filled the air.
There is something for EVERYONE at Foundation Plaza!
Thank you to all those who invested their time, talent, and dollars to make this a reality for our community.
Much of the Plaza’s construction was completed in 2022 with a few finishing touches, like turf, added in early 2023.
The official ribbon cutting ceremony for Watertown Area Community Foundation Plaza was held on May 25, 2023.
By creating a charitable fund at the Community Foundation, these generous individuals, families, and local organizations enlist our expertise to make the most of their philanthropy.
We safeguard and grow their charitable funds, identify innovative grantmaking opportunities, and amplify their impact by pooling support to tackle big challenges. Together, we create an impact that makes life better today and shapes a brighter future for Watertown.

The Williams made giving back to organizations serving local disadvantaged children a priority throughout their lives. Now, with both Darwin and Fern passed, their legacy of giving continues through their donor advised fund at the Foundation. The couple designated Christina Planteen of Watertown to advise grants from their fund upon their passing.
“Both would wholeheartedly support the work of People Against Child Hunger (PACH). Fern knew that feeling when she was young, sometimes not knowing when her next meal may come. She would want to do whatever she could to prevent that kind of suffering for another child, especially in Watertown, a community she loved so much.”
-Christina PlanteenPACH provides children in Codington County who may not have enough food to eat at home, easy-to-prepare weekend meals and snacks. In 2022, the nonprofit organization served an average of 520 children every week. Meal items and snacks are sorted, packed, distributed, and discreetly placed in disadvantaged children’s backpacks at local schools every week. The entire process is led by community volunteers.
Unfortunately, in 2023, PACH experienced a nearly 40% increase in food costs. Having learned of the rising costs the organization faced and with a new school year about to begin, Christina directed a $20,000 grant to PACH from the Darwin and Fern Williams Fund.
“What a phenomenal legacy Mr. and Mrs. Williams have created,” said Cammie Mengwasser, Foundation Executive Director. “No one could have predicted in 2014 when the Williams established their fund the food insecurities our community’s young people would be facing a decade later. With demand continuing to rise, more and more support will be necessary to maintain the critical service PACH provides.”

“We wanted to make a difference for those who have the passion to make a difference in the lives of people struggling with addiction. We believe God puts people in our path when we need them most. Time and time again we have found this to be true during our family’s struggles. Our hope is this scholarship can ease the way for students who are so willing to walk on the journey with families impacted by addiction.” -Mindy Wirkus

Women & Giving 20th Anniversary
Nearly any asset can be donated for charitable purposes, often with tax savings benefits. Contact the Foundation to learn more about these and other opportunities to make a lasting impact.
Cash gifts are the most popular and simplest way to make a charitable contribution. Gifts can be made via cash, check, or credit card.
Land and properties offer a variety of gifting opportunities.
Donate a fully-funded policy during your lifetime and/or name the Foundation as a beneficiary.
In the spring of 2023, long-time friends of the Foundation, Dale and Diane Christensen, generously gifted 5,000 shares of GLCP stock resulting in a gift of nearly $9,000.
“Our cost, with stock splits, was just 11 cents per share,” Dale shared. “The stock appreciated to $1.81 per share. To make a gift of that magnitude with just a $550 investment, it’s really a dream come true for people who want to make a charitable impact and avoid capital gains tax.”
A retired financial advisor, Dale was a trustee representative for the Foundation from 1981 until his retirement in 2002. The Christensens established a fund at the Foundation in 2004, and Dale served on the WACF Board from 2006 to 2016.
Gifting appreciated stock allows Foundation donors to save on taxes in potentially two ways: by avoiding capital gains taxes and by allowing them to take an income tax deduction, in most cases.
“ When you donate appreciated stock, your dollar goes further than if you were to sell the stock and donate your earnings. The money you would have paid in taxes can instead go fully to the Foundation, maximizing your philanthropic impact.”- Dale Christensen
IRA CHARITABLE ROLLOVER/ (QCD) QUALIFIED CHARITABLE DISTRIBUTION
Even though required minimum distributions from a traditional IRA do not start until age 72, you can begin making charitable distributions directly to charity up to $100,000 annually at 70 ½.
Gifts of appreciated securities are a very effective asset to gift and often provide significant tax benefits. Donors are encouraged to consult with their tax advisor regarding their specific tax situation.
Naming the Foundation as a beneficiary of a 401(k), 403(b), traditional IRA, SEP or any other type of qualified retirement plan can be a tax-efficient asset to facilitate a legacy gift.
