The black cat and bird on a fence post Halloween window decoration, above, sold on eBay last month for $1,608. It received 24 competitive bids. The witch holding a broom chocolate mold, bottom photo, also sold on eBay last month for $257. The item had 10 bidders.

Knowing the value of antique Halloween decorations may encourage some readers to be on the lookout for such things when shop-

ping for collectibles. If you should come across a stack of authentic old postcards and decorations bearing seemingly worthless Halloween themes, remember, many of these items can be worth hundreds of dollars or more. Among the desirable most examples of old H a l l o w e e n decorations are those that were made in Germany from 1919 to 1935, for export to the United States. Early German paper mache and pumpkins Red Devil Jack-OLanterns are very valuable. A heavily embossed antique

window decoration of a black cat and a bird on a fence sold on ebay last month for $1,608. Early Halloween decorations made by the Beistle Company of Pennsylvania, and the Dennison Mfg. Co. of Massachusetts, are also in high demand. Each company is still in business. Prices can be expensive for this collecting niche, yet, from postcards to candy containers, antique Halloween collectibles in decent condition generally sells for $20 or less. If you can find an early Halloween decoration for a few dollars at a garage sale, buy it. You can then give it away to your collector friend, sell it on eBay, make a profit, or just add it to your collection.

The Family Fight - Planning to Avoid It "The Family FightPlanning to Avoid It, A No Nonsense Guide To Wills & Estates," by Barry Fish and Les Kotzer, has much to offer anyone who may be seeking direction and advice on how to write a will. Kotzer says, "money, family, and death make a combustible combination." When dealing with the aftermath of a death in the family, not having a will can divide a family over heated squabbles of who gets what from an estate? "Mom said I could have this," and similar

refrains that lay claims to the most expensive and most cherished heirlooms of an estate are often tossed back and forth when family members fight over "grandma's stuff," "mom's jewelry," or "dad's 1965 Mustang." It can get ugly. Fish and Kotzer's Visit: www.familyfight.com for book provides plenty more information. of examples of family members scheming and fussing among themselves over an estate. Most importantly, the book offers an assortment of strategies one can use to ensure their last wishes and instructions are safeguarded.

Architectural Salvage Projects

We’d love to sell your items and turn them into cash.

By Dolores Monet

Architectural salvage refers to antique materials removed from old buildings and homes that are facing demolition. With the interest in recycled products, many fine old pieces of hardware, tin ceiling panels, decorative wood elements, and ceramic tile can be found at salvage yards and junk stores. Salvaged materials can enhance many types of interior decoration: • A country style decorating scheme is enhanced with the use of salvaged objects for a rustic appeal. • Minimalist styles, with their clean lines and neutral colors benefit from the addition of unique architectural salvaged pieces. The current trend, influenced by an environmental theme, is underscored by the use of recycled items. • An eclectic, Old World, or Bohemian look just screams for a piece of framed tin ceiling panel, antique woodwork, or old fixtures. You do not have to be an artist to produce an interesting wall hanging, sculpture, or decorative accessory made with salvaged objects. There are many projects that you can put together yourself using the tools you have on hand and a little creativity.

Support WAC Advertisers!

• Tin ceiling panels are easily cut with tin snips and can be bent into new shapes. Fold tin around a frame for a distinctive piece of wall art. Make a box for a plant or pens. Tin ceiling tiles can make a quaint roof for a rustic bird house. • Old wooden spindles - mount a bird house or feeder on old wood spindles. Use one as a lamp base or towel rack. • Salvaged ceramic tile make a beautiful back splash for a kitchen or bathroom sink. Lovely old tiles look great in a mosaic piece or mixed with modern tiles for a distinctive look. • Antique metal hardware can be used in sculpture, 3D collages, or mounted on old wood as coat hooks. Replace drawer pulls with old, salvaged drawer pulls to turn a plain dresser into a charming piece of furniture. • An antique sink can be used as a sink or set outside as a bird bath or whimsical plant container. Once you get the hang of using architectural salvage, new ideas just keep popping up - enhancing your creative spirit and having a bit of fun with environmentally sustainable practices.

American television icon Fred G. Sanford, the crafty and manipulative junk man and antique dealer from South-Central Los Angeles, on the 1970s television show Sanford and Son, made buying and selling junk cool with a big laugh. Fred, played by funny man and long time stand-up comedian Redd Foxx, and his son Lamont, played by Demond Wilson, Highest Cash Paid!

entertained America from 1972 to 1977, with situation comedy based on a junk business where they bought junk and sold antiques. Fred, an over-thehill junk dealer, was happy with his little business and the marginal income it provided him. Lamont, on the other hand, was looking to better himself by getting out of the junk business and trying something more challenging and hopefully, more lucrative. Fred, whose wife, Elizabeth, had died some years before,

Page 6

would do anything to keep his son from deserting him and the business. Every time Lamont threatened to leave, Fred would fake a heart attack and start moaning, "I'm coming, Elizabeth, I'm coming." Fred had a steady girlfriend in nurse Donna Harris, whom he was always promising to marry, and he was constantly at odds with Aunt Esther, his late wife's sister. Sanford and Son was based on the successful British TV comedy, Steptoe and Son.

Pennsylvania Dutch Hope Chests The dower chest, better known as a hope chest or blanket chest today, is referred to by the Pennsylvania Dutch as Ausschteier Kischt. This piece of furniture is the most cherished and most representative of the Germanic immigrants who came to live in Pennsylvania during the late 17th, 18th and 19th centuries. Young girls between the ages of eight to ten were given hope chests inscribed with their names and usually the date of presentation. This storage chest was filled with household items that the girl made, was given or purchased in

anticipation of her future marriage. On her wedding day, this completely filled hope chest was proudly placed in the “Wedding Wagon” to be taken to her new home. Items would have included blankets, bed linens, baby clothes, quilts and some family heirlooms. The design styles,

dimensions and construction types differ among these hope chests which shows that the craftsmen did not copy each other's work. The foot design changes from dower chest to dower chest with a large variety of bracket feet, rounded ball feet or no feet at all. Some hope chests had two or three drawers along the bottom, while others had none. Many blanket chests had inlay designs or special painted designs.

The painted designs on some of these hope chests are very elaborate which has enabled historians to be able to categorize them by region and to recognize specific craftsmen. These dower chest designs included the use of inlaid leaf and flower motifs,

unicorns, hearts, birds, hex designs to ward off evil spirits, flower designs mainly of roses or tulips, the name of the girl receiving the hope chest and the date that the hope chest was presented. The two common elements of these hope Continue on page 15

Family Heirlooms and What to Do With Them

Page 15

By Amy Gray

As we opened one box after another of old photos, children’s art work, family heirlooms and other artifacts of lives lived, a client got frustrated with me as I suggested she consider purging some of these items, which had been taking up a lot of space for many years. She exclaimed, “Aren’t you sentimental at all?” My answer was yes; I had a hard time toss-

I told her the story of the famous 50th birthday diamond ring which goes like this: It’s been a tradition in my family for the mother to give the daughter a diamond cocktail ring upon the daughter’s 50th birthday. This was a gosh-awful looking thing, garish, pretty much unwearable and certainly not my taste. When I was the recipient of this sentimental treasure, I asked my mother if she had ever worn it. Her answer? Perhaps twice in the years it had sat in her jewelry box “But don’t under any circumstances get rid of it,” I was warned. “It belonged to my

great-grandmother and it’s precious.” Because I’m not the sentimental type (except as noted above) I promptly took the ring to a jeweler to see if I could sell it. “This ring is a precious family heirloom,” I told him, “It’s probably worth thousands.” The jeweler looked at the ring closely through his eye piece and then announced, “Actually, it’s pretty much worthless. The diamonds are European cut which is not fashionable now and they’re all broken besides.” The fact that diamonds could break was news to me; I was under Buying the that Pocketimpression Watches Wrist, Watches diamonds were the Unusual Pieces hardest stones on earth. ring was really a piece of junk that had been cherished for no other reason than it was old. I took the ring to a second jeweler who said exactly the same thing as the first jeweler, but he offered to take it off my hands for $200. I promptly accepted his offer, bought another ring that I actually liked and now have a new family heirloom to pass onto my daughter. She may even

This fresh smell can be rejuvenated by simply roughing the cedar with small grit sandpaper. Even though society in many regions has discontinued the tradition of parents giving dower chests to their young daughters, many beautifully constructed hope chests are still lovingly given as wedding presents, or as a special gift.
