Eisenhower made it to the 5A semifinals last season, with one of the more impressive offenses in the state. While there will be some key holes to fill on the Tigers’ offense, there is still plenty of talent coming back. Running back Brayden Pappas, who was second team all-league, rushed for over 1,200 yards and will be the focal point offensively. Also returning is wide receiver Hayden Nall, who hauled in five touchdowns. Eisenhower’s strength defensively will be up front, where four starters return at the first two levels. Getting back to the final four will be difficult for the Tigers, but the talent is there to be one of the top teams in 5A again.
After going 20-9 from 2021-2023, Salina Central took a step back last season, going just 4-5. But that appears to be a one year aberration as the Mustangs bring back eight all-league performers from last season. Leading that group is first team all-league offensive lineman and Kansas Jayhawk commit, Kaden Snyder, who is a four-star recruit according to Rivals. Snyder will be blocking for second team allleague running back Cooper Reves and second team all-league wide receiver Bodie Rodriguez. Second team all-league defensive back Abram Owings will be the leader of the defense. Salina Central has the roster to be one of the final teams playing in 5A.
Whenever a team can bring back a Division I talent, that’s a great place to start their roster. Maize South’s Hunter Higgins is the fifth ranked player in the state according to Rivals and has committed to Kansas. He will be a load on the defensive line. The Maverick’s offensive duo of quarterback Tate McNew and wide receiver Landon Gatto connected 99 times for 1,332 yards and 16 touchdowns last season. Those two will be difficult to replace, but the Mavericks bring back second team all-league tight end Alex Singhateh and honorable mention all-league wide receiver Braxton Liby. Finding the right person to throw it to them will be critical.
Over the past three seasons, Hutchinson has gone 23-9 with five playoff victories. With 12 starters returning in 2025, the Salthawks figure to have the roster to win
multiple playoff games again. Hutchinson’s top two players will be second team all-league offensive lineman Taylor Riemen and second team all-league linebacker Jackson Alexander. But also figuring into the mix are all-league honorable mention selections Bailey Bishop (OL), GaVaughn Embers (DL), Brodie McCuan (DB) and Tramel Walker (DB).
Goddard has gone 17-8 with a league championship over the past three seasons, but hasn’t been able to get that elusive playoff win. With 14 starters returning in 2025, this might be the team that breaks through for the Lions. The defensive side of the ball returns the most high-end talent on the roster. Second team all-league defensive lineman Trey Wright and honorable mention all-league selections Jordan Zeltner (end), Gage Koenigs (LB), Elliott Walk (LB) and D’Ervin Phillips (DB) lead what could be a formidable unit. Goddard has the roster to play deep into November.
It was a solid first season at Andover for Jamie Cruce’s tenure. After going 0-9 in 2023, the Trojans bounced back with a 4-5 record. The challenge will now be keeping the momentum going with just eight starters returning. Andover’s two most notable returning players are offensive lineman Ben Reynolds and middle linebacker Aaron Kimball – both were honorable mention all-league selections. The Trojans will need inexperienced players to step up in order to not take a step back.
The 2025 season will be a new era of Bishop Carroll football as Chris Jaax takes over for longtime coordinator and then head coach Dusty Trail. Jaax inherits a team that will not be short on talent. First team all-league defensive back Blake Bowmaker returns, as does second team all-league selections Nic Wineland (wide receiver) and Aedyn Acosta (defensive back). There are plenty more honorable mention all-league selections back for the Golden Eagles, too. Expect a much improved season for Carroll after going 2-7 last season.

Now that he has chosen where he will be playing college football, Salina Central first team all-league offensive lineman Kaden Snyder knows he can play free this season and help lead the Mustangs to a deep playoff run.
“I really just wanted to be stronger and understand the game more,” said Snyder, who has committed to the University of Kansas. “I feel like I have improved on both of those things and still want to improve. I want to see me play more free than ever.”
Even though Snyder is highly thought of by recruiting experts (he is the No. 3 ranked player in Kansas by Rivals), how he transformed his body from last season is impressive.
“I have been preparing a lot this off season,” Snyder said. “I have gone from 245 pounds last spring to 295 now. I have gained a lot on my lifts and am always watching film. Very excited to show how much I’ve improved.”
Being a four-star recruit, Snyder sees the potential for his career past Salina and perhaps even past Lawrence.
“I hope to make it to the NFL as if there is no plan B,” Snyder said. Ultimately, Snyder wants to focus on his last season wearing a Mustangs jersey, as the po-tential is there for a successful one.
“I am most excited for being with my best friends for one more year before I move on to bigger things,” Snyder said. “I am excited to win games we should be really good this year.”
Knee pain is one of the most common musculoskeletal complaints across all age groups. Chances are, you’ve dealt with a nagging knee issue at some point. In fact, studies show nearly 25% of adults experience knee pain that limits function. But here’s something many people don’t realize – just because you’ve had an old injury, a meniscus tear, or even early signs of osteoarthritis, doesn’t mean you’re destined for pain. There are plenty of people who walk around with MRI findings and no symptoms. However, the real question is, can knee pain be prevented?
The short answer: not always. Injuries happen. Life is unpredictable. But you can take steps to stack the odds in your favor. Wearing sunscreen doesn’t guarantee you’ll never get sunburned, but it drastically lowers the risk. Building strong, mobile knees and managing lifestyle factors does the same to help prevent knee pain.
Here are the two areas of focus:
• Lifestyle factors that increase or reduce your likelihood of knee pain.
• Training strategies that strengthen, mobilize, and protect your joints.
Unlike your age or genetics, these are factors you can control, and they can have a big impact on how your knees feel and function.
Sleep
• Poor sleep affects tissue repair, pain sensitivity, and inflammation. Inadequate sleep has been linked to increased injury risk and slower recovery across multiple studies.
Tip: Aim for 7 to 9 hours per night.
Nutrition
• Diet plays a major role in systemic inflammation. A high-inflammatory diet (think ultra-processed foods, high sugar intake, and low nutrient density) is associated with greater pain levels and higher rates of osteoarthritis. Obesity, often associated with a poor diet, has also been linked to higher rates of knee osteoarthritis.
Tip: Focus on whole foods, a variety of vegetable & protein sources, staying hydrated, and an overall focus on total calories consumed to keep weight in check.
Stress
• Mental stress can alter how we perceive pain and how well our body heals. Chronic stress also elevates cortisol, which may adversely affect the role of inflammation in our bodies.
Tip: Techniques like mindfulness, exercise, and proper boundaries can help keep stress in check.
You’ve probably heard phrases like “bulletproof your knees.” While no joint is invincible, stronger, more mobile knees are less likely to hurt and more likely to recover well from strain.
A stronger joint is a more stable and durable joint. Strength training reinforces not just your muscles, but also tendons, ligaments, and cartilage and can help prevent knee pain.
Key exercises:
• Squats
• Lunges
• Step-ups
• Jumping and plyometrics
Start with 3-5 sets, 2-3 times per week, using a difficulty that feels like a 7 out of 10 in effort (known as RPE). And don’t be afraid to incorporate jumping or explosive movements. Your knees are designed to handle impact.
Mobility matters. Joints don’t like being stuck at end ranges, they rarely visit. A full range of motion makes daily movements smoother and lowers the risk of compensatory patterns.
Stiff hips or ankles can also shift stress onto your knees. That’s why mobility above and below the joint is just as important as the knee itself.
Try these 3 stretches to help prevent knee pain:
• Couch Stretch (targets quads and hip flexors) – Kneel on one knee in front of a couch. Place your back foot up on the couch (toes pointed up) or rest it on the couch behind you. Keep your torso upright and squeeze your glutes to feel a stretch through the front of your thigh and hip. Hold for 30–60 seconds per side.
• Pigeon Stretch (opens hips and glutes) – From a push-up or plank position, bring one knee forward and place it behind your hands with your shin angled across your body. Let your back leg extend straight behind you. Lower your torso over your front leg until you feel a stretch in the hip and glute. Hold for 30–60 seconds per side.
• Wall Calf Stretch (improves ankle dorsiflexion) – Stand facing a wall with your hands against it. Step one foot back, keeping that heel flat on the ground and your knee straight. Lean forward into the wall until you feel a stretch in your back calf. Hold for 30–60 seconds per side.
Progress Gradually (Smart Load Management)
This is one of the biggest keys to avoiding injury: don’t do too much too soon. The body adapts best with gradual, consistent progress. Jumping from 3 miles of running to 13 in a week is handled differently than adding a mile per week over the course of 3 months.
Example of smart progression:
• Running: Increase your mileage by 10 percent each week
• Strength: Increase weight by 2.5-5% each week
• Stretching: Don’t try to go from tight hips to full splits in a week – add a few degrees each week.
Your tissues adapt to the stress you place on them, so make sure the stress is applied gradually.
While knee pain can’t always be prevented, there’s a lot you can do to reduce your risk and improve how your knees feel and perform.
Key tips:
• Improve your sleep, nutrition, and stress management
• Strengthen your legs with squats, lunges, and step-ups
• Stay mobile through regular stretching
• Progress your activity gradually and consistently

The Salina South football team struggled to a 1-8 record last season, but returning linebacker Gabe Wheelbarger is excited about the Cougars’ chances for 2025.
“I’m excited about the potential of our team this year and all the support we have from fans,” Wheelbarger said. “The hope for my team is to be able to win the games where we know we have the talent plus make sure we are all still brothers at the end no matter what.”
Wheelbarger was a second team all-league selection last season for Salina South, but there was a part to his skillset that he struggled with.
“One thing I have struggled with was pass coverage at the linebacker position so during this summer I have made sure to practice more seven on seven work,” Wheelbarger said.
“During this off season I have been to multiple camps and have been in the weight room every day.”
The 2025 season will likely be Wheelbarger’s last playing football, so he wants to make the most of it.
“After high school I plan on going into the work force while taking classes at Salina Tech for auto body repair,” Wheelbarger said.
The 4A State Champions of Andover Central have a lot riding on the upcoming 2025 season. After graduating a large number of athletes on both sides of the ball, head coach Derek Tuttle and the Jaguars will look to fill those holes. Central’s strength will sit on both the offensive and defensive lines, with notable seniors like Jaylen Wilson, Paxton McCleod, and Aiden Jordan returning. Another young and familiar face returning to the offense is running back Jaxon Green who saw plenty of varsity action last year. The Jaguars will be eager and hungry to bring home another title for the second year in a row.
With this being only their second season in Class 4A, Kapaun Mount Carmel didn’t let any change slow them down. Kapaun finished the 2024 season at 7-3, and return a good chunk of talent both offensively and defensively. Senior offensive lineman Nick Anciaux was a first team all-league tackle for the Crusaders last season. Anciaux will be paving the way on offense with help from linemen Landon Heise and Max Worrell. The Crusaders also bring back the heart of their defense with second team all-league defensive end Cole Tarantino at the head.
After Buhler’s 2024 season came to a heartbreaking end to Andover Central in the semifinals, the Crusaders knew this year could and would be their comeback season. Bringing back a strong number of offensive weapons will do big things for Buhler this season. Defensively, the Crusaders will be placing a lot of new faces out on the field. However, first team all-league linebacker Jacob Miller will be showing the way as he returns on both sides of the ball. Falling short of a state title last season, Buhler is out for blood and looking to bring home some hardware.
Bringing back a good number of talent, McPherson will be a threat this
season. Both sides of the ball will see a lot of familiar faces, and lots of athleticism will be fighting to see the field. The Bullpups bring back one of the best receivers in the league with Ashton Malm. Malm was an all-state and allleague receiver last season as only a sophomore.
Wellington went 8-3 last season, but after graduating a large number from that 2024 team, the Crusaders are looking for new talent both offensively and defensively. Wellington will rely deeply on their veteran offensive line, as well as a few returning faces. Linebacker Colton Bannister was a first team all-league athlete last season, and will be stepping up to the plate. Others like Cameron Rosenburg, Milo Elder, and Jalik Armstrong also return, and will help lead the Crusaders through the season.
Since having one of their better seasons in the past few years last season, Mulvane is looking to build on that success. The Wildcats are returning eight of last season’s offensive starters, and five of their defensive starters. Leading the pack at quarterback is Manny Myers. Myers has an endless case of stats from last season, making him one of best returning quarterbacks in the league. Helping him on offense will be junior Grady Myers, who was an All-State honorable mention receiver. Mulvane will be fun to watch offensively, and a team to look for in postseason play.
The 2024 season didn’t end quite how Abilene thought it would, but that didn’t stop them from putting in the work all offseason leading to this fall. Abilene brings back a good number of veteran starters this season that cover a wide variety of positions. On offense, the line will see some familiar faces and so will the receiving core. Taygen Funston also returns at quarterback, who had 17 combined passing and rushing touchdowns.

Having almost 1,000 receiving yards last season, first team all-league receiver Ashton Malm returns for McPherson. Malm, along with the rest of the team, has spent most of the offseason in the weight room.
“Our team is definitely preparing for the season by having a high percentage of our guys in the weight room along with summer workouts this offseason,” Malm said.
Taking it one week at a time will be key for the Bullpups this season, and Malm is hoping it all comes together in the long run.
“Our biggest focus as a team is to win every week, and not to look ahead to any competition,” Malm said. “My goal is to be one of the top receivers in the state.”
While he hopes to increase his stat records during big games like Buhler and Great Bend, Malm is ready to take it all in for one last time.
“I am most excited about getting to play
with my guys and having one last season with all these seniors,” Malm said.
A past playoff win was important to Malm, and he’s hoping to have more in the future.
“A moment from playing high school football was winning a playoff game last season,” Malm said. “That was special.”

Dylan Hall was a dominant force on the offensive line for McPherson last season. Hall was a second team all-league lineman for the Bullpups.
“One of my biggest goals is to earn recognition and make a name for myself this season,” Hall said. “I only gave up one sack last year, and I’m aiming for zero this time around. On defense, I want to be a consistent impact player. My goal is at least one sack per game.”
During the time off, work didn’t slow down for Hall, and he found himself training and mastering his craft for the upcoming season.
“This offseason, I’ve been putting in serious work,” Hall said. “My main focus has been improving my speed and agility while continuing to build strength. I’ve also been working a lot on refining my technique on the defensive line, just dialing in the details to take my game to the next level.”
McPherson brings the talent to the table every year, but Hall is confident that this is the year where all the work pays off.
“I’m really excited for another season alongside my brothers and coaches,” Hall said. “We’ve all been grinding hard this summer, and I can’t wait to see how far we go. There’s a different kind of energy this year, and I’m ready to bring it every week.”
It won’t always be an easy ride to the finish line, and Hall knows just who will give them the most trouble.
“I’m definitely looking forward to week one against Great Bend,” Hall said. “And of course, the matchup with Buhler, that one always brings out the best in us.”

Abilene’s Heath Hoekman was a first team all-league lineman last season. Returning this year, it’s so much more than just a game for Hoekman.
“I’m excited to play with my teammates this year, especially my twin brother who is our running back,” Hoekman said. “I’m excited to block for him and to be a part of his season.”
With a lot on the line for Abilene, Hoekman is hoping to help better the team’s winning record, and he’s excited to put his leadership role to good use.
“This season I’m hoping to have a better record than our record last year and have a solid run in the playoffs,” Hoekman said. “I think we improved with leadership this year as people have stepped up and started to take responsibility and to hold each other accountable.”
A big home opener for Abilene excites Hoekman, along with their annual rivalry games.
“I’m excited for our home opener against Clay Center,” Hoekman said. “I’m also very excited for the district rivalry against Chapman. It is the longest rivalry west of the Mississippi and it is always an intense game with a great atmosphere.”
Hoekman has big plans to continue his athletic journey after high school, but is unsure as to where at the moment.
“I am going to play college baseball, and as of now I’m uncommitted but that is my plan for after high school,” Hoekman said.

After not winning a state championship in 2023, Andale cruised to its fifth title in six years – winning by a scoring average of 45.4. While many players graduated off that team, the Indians still return plenty of all-league talent in 2025. It all starts in the backfield for Andale as second team all-league quarterback, Sam Harp, and running back, Jack Horsch, and tight end, Hunter Grimes, are back. Also back on defense is second team all-league defensive back Lane Par-themer. Anything short of playing on the final Saturday in November will be a disappointment for the Indians.
Hesston’s impressive 7-1 regular season ended in a second round playoff loss to Scott City. The Swathers bring back 13 starters off that team and figure to be a team that can make a deep run in the playoffs. The trenches is where Hesston’s strength will be as first team all-state defen-sive lineman Ethan Coutre returns (he was also an all-league offensive lineman). Also back is first team all-league offensive lineman and second team all-league defensive lineman Gunner Goalden. Add in honorable mention all-league quarterback Jerick Humphreys and second team all-league wide receiver Daxon Derring and Hesston is going to be one of the top teams in 3A.
It is an interesting mix of returning and unproven talent for Wichita Collegiate. First team all-league running back Julian Johnson and second team all-league offensive lineman Ali Al-Sukin are back for the Spartans, as is first team all-league defensive back Sebastian Hines-Turner. But there are plenty of questions marks, especially who will play quarterback, where three players
are in the mix. It seems simple for Collegiate: have inexperienced players step in for a talented 2024 senior class and again be a top team in Class 3A.
Cheney has not lost more than three games in the regular season since 2019, but that could be in jeopardy this season as the Cardinals only bring back six starters. The expectation is that in-experienced players will step into starter’s roles and the beat will go on. Cheney’s top returning player is first team allleague defensive lineman Nolan Durr. Two other key returning starters are back on the defensive side of the ball in linebackers Reece Tolar (who will also be the starting quarterback) and Maximus Miller. The Cardinals will be a team that will get better as the season goes along and be a threat in the playoffs.
Running back Eisaac Girton, who was an all-league defensive back, is one of the few returning players for Clay Center. The Tigers went 5-5 last year, but return Girton and just two other play-ers with significant varsity experience – Drew Hoffman and Ethan Lietzel. Clay Center will have to navigate a brutal schedule, but should be battle-tested come postseason time.
Clearwater went just 3-6 a year ago, but new head coach Jake Bjorstad inherits 11 returning starters. Most of those players played on one side of the ball, but Bjorstad expects most to now shift to being two-way players. The Indians most notable returning player is Garrison Wells, who was a first team all-league running back. On defense, Clearwater will be led by second team allleague linebacker Dalton Wulf. The Indians could be one of the surprise teams in the Class 3A this season.

We will have several skill guys to get the ball to.”

Clay Center senior linebacker Eisaac Girton has some lofty team goals he wants to accomplish this season. In order to do that, week one has to happen first.
“As a team I’m hoping to host a playoff game for the fourth season in a row,” Girton said. “My freshman year we went undefeated at home and I think it would be great if my senior year we could finish the year undefeated at home. And of course to beat Abilene (which is week one).”
Girton has started for the last two years, but was never asked to be one of the leaders. That changes this season.
“I’m most excited to take the responsibility of a leadership role,” Girton said. “I’ve started the last two years and always felt that we had great leaders come through for us, and now it is finally my turn to step in and live up to the expectations they’ve set.”
From an individual standpoint, Girton wants to take his game to the next level, even though he earned all-league honors last season.
“This season I would like to record 100-plus tackles at middle linebacker and become a better coverage backer,” Girton said. “I wanted to improve my speed from last year. I have worked on different speed drills throughout the year since then especially during last track season and throughout this past summer.”
The hope for Girton is that he moves on from Clay Center and plays at the next level. He was able
to see what it takes to play college football by attending some beneficial camps over the summer.
“This summer I attended a prospect camp at Washburn and Fort Hays to better prepare for the season and try to get my name out there a little more,” Girton said. “These two were great experiences as I got to see a lot talent from around the state and see more of what it takes to play at the next level.”
After going 13-0 last year and winning the state championship game, Southeast of Saline is looking to be a force this season. The Trojans will return 10 starters and 12 sen-iors. With this experience they have a good mix of young guys as well, who will learn their winning ways. The Trojans are led by senior Grady Gebhardt who was a all state first team running back and linebacker. Also back are all-league offensive lineman Brody Chambers and all-league defensive lineman Drew Waller. The Trojans have the pieces in place to go back-to-back in Class 2A.
The Beloit Trojans will need to replace their offensive line this season but will return all of their skill players from their 9-3 2024 team. Beloit returns Joel Rexroat who was a first team all-state running back last year and is a senior who will lead the team on both sides of the ball. While the Trojans have to replace a significant portion of their team for 2025, expect them to be a factor come postseason time.
Garden Plain will return 20 lettermen that gained valuable experience in their 2024 playoff run. The Eagles finished 8-3 last season and were led by senior Emrick Hays, who leads the team on both sides of the ball. Despite the return of 20 lettermen the Owls lost
ten seniors, so they will be a very young and hungry team who will be look-ing to develop as the season goes on. Getting back to eight wins and advancing in the playoffs seems like a good bet.
Haven Wildcats finished 8-2 last year, and a lot of the offensive production graduated, but the Wildcats will still return a strong senior class. They will be returning eight start-ers on the offensive side as well as six on the defensive side. Some notable players for the Wildcats are senior Grant Patry who was first team all-league linebacker as well as honorable mention all-league tight end. The Wildcats also will return senior Aaron Lo-gan who was second team all-league offensive lineman. With so much firepower com-ing back, the Wildcats have the team that can eclipse last season’s win total.
Ellsworth finished last season just over .500 with a record of 5-4, but they are returning six starters on both sides of the ball and will be looking to improve on their finish last season. The Bearcats have two standout seniors in Cooper McGowan and Tucker Goss who produce on both sides of the ball for Ellsworth. The Bearcats run a power spread offense with a focus on their run game.

After finishing with a record of 3-6 last year, senior Brayton Peters is working hard to turn that around for his last season at Minneapolis High School.
Peters is a running back for the Lions, who had six touchdowns last year as well as 413 rushing yards.
Head coach Garrett Galinski gives major props to Peters’ hard work that got him on the field in previous seasons.
“He is an extremely physical and hardworking player who will do anything that you ask of him. In order to get him on the field when he was a sophomore we played him at nose tackle and he was extremely successful,” Galinski said.
Peters is excited for his senior season and to be able to finally get back on the field.
“I am excited to get to run the ball and just go out there and try to smack someone as hard as possible,” Peters said.
There are also a couple of goals that Peters has set for him and his team this season.
“I do want to improve on my ability to break more tackles than last year, I just want our team to have a winning record for my senior year and to go out with a bang,” Peters said.
Peters, aside from being a leader on this team, also sets the tone energy-wise. “I set for the team the adrenaline and the tone to go out there and get stuff done and hit the other team in the face right from the start,” Peters said.

As a quarterback there are a lot of things to work on and prepare for the upcoming season, and senior Owen Just has done just that. Just last year had 1,900 passing yards and 18 touchdowns, as well as 300 rushing yards for Minneapolis.
This offseason Just went to camps and worked on his timing and decision making with his receivers.
“I want to improve on decision making. When to throw the ball away, when to take a sack or when to take a risk,” Just said. “Watching film has been big for me.”
Last year the Lions went 3-6 and Just has made it a goal this offseason to finish with a winning record his senior year, as well as improve his own skills.
On the field Just’s role for the team is to be an energy guide and role model for his team.
“I want to be a leader and provide a source of energy when the team is dragging,” Just said.

Finishing last season with nearly 2,000 rushing yards and 29 touchdowns, Beloit senior Joel Rexroat wants to take this offseason to grow his skills.
“I have been going to morning weights during the week. Going to football camps with my team. Also having offensive and defensive practices to prepare for our upcoming season. Also have been playing a variety of other sports to help keep me in shape,” Rexroat said.
Playing both sides of the ball is difficult, and doing both well requires even more work. That is why Rexroat spent a lot of his offseason at the free safety position.
“I really want to improve on my defensive
side as a safety. I have tried to improve whenever we are doing defensive drills during the summer. I make sure I’m focused and doing everything I can to be better at that spot. Also we have been going to a 7 on 7 camp where I can improve on my defense there as well,” Rexroat said.
Rexroat describes himself as the type of leader who always puts the team before himself, and head coach Brad Gober agrees.
“Joel is a great football player who gives everything he has for the team. He is a tough runner who continues to get better later in the game. Not only is he a great football player, he is an outstanding young man,” Gober said.
Favorite sport: Track and Field
Favorite activity/exercise to get in easy movement: Commuting to work on my bike has been a great way to get the blood flowing, get some easy cardio, and provide an opportunity to mentally transfer from home to work and vice versa.
Sports (if any) you played in high school: MidDistance Track, Cross Country
What you treat/specialize in: I treat general orthopedics, but I love working with high school athletes struggling with knee pain. I had the same struggle and never visited a PT, so athletes succeeding here means a lot to me.
Best tip for high school athletes: Strive for great posture and always stretch your calves.

Finishing last year with an undefeated record of 13-0, senior Drew Weller wants to continue that tradition and end his senior year with back-to-state titles.
“I’m really excited about getting back out on the football field with my teammates,” Weller said. “I’m just trying to enjoy every moment.”
With this being Weller’s last year at Southeast of Saline, he has turned up the intensity in the offseason.
“In the offseason, our team puts in the work with morning weights, scrimmages, and tons of drills,” Weller said.
This season, Weller will primarily be playing defensive end and left guard. To improve at this position Weller made it a focus to hit harder and rack up more tackles. Weller did this by focusing solely on technique and hitting the weight room during the offseason.
Last year, Weller racked up 58 tackles and two sacks, which earned him all state honorable mention defensive line and all non-senior honorable mention. He hopes to improve on these accomplishments as well
By Cooper Chadwick
as get an all-state mention. Weller also has the mindset for his team to go 1-0 every week, focusing on one game at a time.
As a senior, Weller’s role is to be a leader for the underclassmen and be someone who they can look up to and learn from.
Weller’s motivation for this year is to have another perfect season and make another run for the state title. “Knowing this is my last year to have a run at it, makes me more motivated,” Weller said.
What makes Hillsboro senior Jesiah Gooch a stand out athlete is not just his hard work on the field but also his actions off of it.
“Jesiah is known for his positive attitude and willingness to help others. Jesiah’s commitment to his teammates and his strong character make him a standout both as a player and as a person—qualities that truly set him apart,” head coach Demetrius Cox said.
Gooch plays both running back and linebacker for Hillsboro and had nearly 900 yards rushing in nine games, averaging right under 100 yards a game. As well as 99 total tackles in nine games. These stats earned him all-state honorable mention running back and linebacker, all-league second team running back and linebacker and Top 100 All-State (3A and below).
Gooch hopes to play college football and has received interest and offers from programs like Washburn and UCO, but he doesn’t want to stop there. Gooch has used this offseason to get his name out there.
“This offseason I’ve been locked in on lifting, speed training, and attending multiple college camps to compete and get better. I hit camps at places like KU, Washburn, UCO, South
Dakota, Harding, Northwest Missouri State, and more,” Gooch said.
Gooch is extremely motivated to play his senior season and put his best foot forward.
“I’ve been around the game since I was a kid, and I’m motivated to keep growing into the best version of myself through football,” Gooch said.
There was continuous praise of Gooch’s character and skill from his head coach when asked what makes Gooch special.
“Jesiah Gooch is a dedicated and hard-working player who always puts the team first. He leads by example, both on the field and in the locker room, showing great sportsmanship and a strong work ethic. Jesiah is coachable, resilient, and never backs down from a challenge,” Cox said.

With his love of playing football starting in kindergarten, senior Grady Gebhardt is ready to play his last year of high school football for Southeast of Saline.
“I am most excited to be back with my teammates on our new field. I can’t wait to feel the support from our community every single week. Excited for it to start,” Gebhardt said.
Gebhardt plays running back and middle linebacker for the Trojans and has been working all offseason to improve, specifically on getting faster.
“I have been preparing by playing catch with my teammates often. Working with a trainer each week and getting in the gym as much as possible,” Gebhardt said. As team captain, Gebhardt wants to help his team play and compete at a higher level than they did last year.
“We want to improve each week and learn from our mistakes. We want to make a big push in the post season. We want to keep building week by week,” Gebhardt said.
Last season Gebhardt had 1,439 rushing yards and 15 touchdowns as well as 23 catches 331 yards and three touchdowns and racked up 80 tackles. These stats earned him first team allstate running back and linebacker, allleague first team running back and allleague second team linebacker.
Aside from his work on the field, Gebhardt is also praised for his mentality off the field.
“He has outstanding character and works hard to be successful. He has focus and purpose,” head coach Mitch Gebhardt said.

As a senior for Southeast of Saline, Bryson Lippold is excited to play his final year with the group of guys he has been playing, training and building relationships with since fifth grade.
“We have a lot of returning guys who have continued to put the work in for this team every day. I’m ready to get on our new turf field and play some football,” Lippold said. Lippold plays outside linebacker and spent his offseason working on getting bigger, getting stronger, and playing faster.
“I want to dial up the intensity that I play at, I have worked on these things by working harder in the weight room and in speed training,” Lippold said.
Southeast of Saline plays 7-on-7 on Mondays in June, and Lippold used that opportunity to get as many reps as possible to gain confidence and speed.
Last season, Lippold had 39 solo tackles, 72 total tackles, nine tackles for a loss, two sacks, one forced fumble, three fumble recoveries and one blocked punt.
As a senior Lippold sees himself as a leader for this team, and
hopes to be a key part for both the offensive and defensive side of things for Southeast of Saline.
“My role is to do my job right so that every other player can do theirs right too,” Lippold said.
Lippold hopes to make his family proud this last season because they have been there for him every step of his career.

After leading Beloit to a 9-3 record and getting second place in their district, head coach Brad Gober is excited to get back on the field with his boys.
Gober has been coaching high school football since 2010. He has coached at Rock Creek, as well as Augusta, and has been the head coach at Beloit High school for nine years.
When asked about what got him into coaching, Gober attributed it to the people he had in his life when he was younger.
“I had great role models growing up who were great coaches and great teachers. I love watching our athletes improve as football players, but most importantly as young men,” Gober said.
Gober hopes that the quality and intensity of their offseason will transfer over to the season, and that their standouts will step up and make big contributions this fall.
Beloit has skilled returners in senior running back and
defensive back Joel Rexroat and senior offensive tackle and defensive end Brody Litton. As well as sophomores Griff Johnson, Jacob Hand and Kross Kremmerer.
Beloit’s motto for this season is “Win The Day” which goes hand in hand with Gobert’s coaching Philosophy.
“My philosophy as a coach is to always be myself and to always be consistent in how we approach each workout, practice, and game. I truly believe that if we can remain consistent in those areas each and every week, we will always become the best version of ourselves by the end of the season. I also truly believe that we, as coaches, have to invest time into the total man. We have to teach these young men what it means to be a man of integrity and a man that people can count on,” Gober said.

Ellsworth senior Cooper McGowan plays fullback and outside linebacker for the Bearcats and is excited to see all the hard work he has put in pay off in his final season of high school football.
McGowan has turned up the intensity this summer in preparation for his senior year.
“I have been working out with trainers and went to several camps this summer as well as school activities. Working with trainers helped me become more coordinated and quicker while also helping me gain weight and muscle,” McGowan said.
Last year McGowan finished the season with four tackles for loss, two Sacks, three forced fumbles, seven receptions and 99 receiving yards. McGowan has big plans for the Bearcats this season.
“A few of my goals as a team include winning our league and winning six games to make my senior class have the most wins in Ellsworth football history,” McGowan said. Needing to play a big role for Ellsworth this year, McGowan is going to use all the motivation he can to finish out his final year.
“The people around me motivate me the most, whether it’s teammates,
coaches, trainers, or family. The time and support they have given me is what keeps me going. Along with the moral support, I am also a huge competitor. No matter what activity I play, my goal is to win,” McGowan said. McGowan focused this summer on becoming more fluid when it comes to blocking and block shedding. He hopes this will help him become an overall better player and role model for his team.
“This year my role includes being a good leader and teammate, as well as a good consistent player,” McGowan said.

After a rough year in 2024, the Lions have been locked in this summer and are ready to put their best foot forward.
“This team has been firing on all cylinders this summer. We have some guys from last year that we have to replace but overall with the players’ hard work all summer and the new additions to the coaching staff we are looking to have our best season yet,” head coach Carl Nolan said. The Lions look to bring back a couple high quality players for the 2025 season. Sophomore running back and linebacker Xander Young returns after leading the team in rushing and ranking among the top tacklers. He rushed for 600 yards and five touchdowns on 99 carries while adding 59 total tackles, including 29 solo stops and three tackles for loss.
Senior Hendrix Starbuck anchors the defense after recording a team-high 67 tackles, 41 solo stops, four tackles for loss, and three INTs—one returned for a TD.
Junior defensive back Jace Thompson added 22 tackles and two interceptions, while wide receivers Quanick Hamilton and Detrell Stanley combined for 27 catches, 370 yards, and four TDs.
Nolan has high expectations this year for his team even in the face of diversity.
“This year we will face some adversity we will have a young group up front on the offensive line and we run into the defendant 2A State Champions in Southeast of Saline. We open the season with a solid Beloit team who made a run in the state playoffs. Coaching or playing a sport you will always face adversity not just because of your opponents. Sometimes the ball just doesn’t roll your way. It’s not so much will there be adversity as how you will face it. Will you give up, will you give in or will you keep fighting. It’s all a choice that we have to make, we just have to keep fighting,” Nolan said.
Coming off back-to-back undefeated championship seasons in 2023 and 2024, Conway Springs is once again among the favorites in Class 1A. Head Coach Matt Biehler, in his 17th season, returns a strong senior core, including standout RB/LB Logan Osner and a solid offensive line led by seniors Ashton Stull, Bryson Lange, and Cohen Newell. With 11 players lost from last year’s title-winning teams, Conway Springs will lean on a talented group of underclassmen stepping into key roles. The Cardinals’ blend of experience and youth aims to keep their championship run alive.
After a couple of rebuilding seasons, Hutchinson Trinity looks to rebound in 2025 under 12th-year Head Coach Jordan Bell. Trinity Catholic will return eight starters on offense and nine on defense. The Celtics boast an experienced roster led by senior QB/DB Drew Dechant and versatile senior skill players like TE/LB Bentyn Chastain and WR/DB Sam Vogel. The team’s hard-working attitude and strong leadership set the stage for a push back toward playoff contention in the competitive Heart of America League.
Inman is coming off a solid 2024 campaign and have high hopes for 2025 under veteran coach Lance Sawyer. Key returning starters like senior lineman Cooper Wiens and junior Swiss army knife Malachi Brunk anchor a balanced squad that emphasizes physicality and discipline. After a tough 2023, Inman’s focus on recommitting to program standards has helped spark progress, with the team ready to challenge top district rivals in a loaded schedule. The goal is to get back to how they were in 2021 and 2022 when they had championship berths.
Marion has steadily improved over the past few seasons, going 7-3 last year
under 8th-year Head Coach Shaun Craft. The squad returns several multi-year starters, including senior Jameson Looper and senior Kadon Mercer, giving the Warriors a solid foundation on both sides of the ball. With strong leadership and key juniors ready to step up, Marion aims to maintain momentum and compete for a top spot in the Heart of America League.
Moundridge emerged last year as a contender in the Heart of America. Now, after a strong 7-1 record in 2024, the Bulldogs return a deep senior class with experienced playmakers in all three phases, led by the likes of Kaizer Kanitz and Logan Greenwalt. And with several juniors ready to step into new roles, Moundridge looks to build on its recent success and challenge for league supremacy with its potent blend of speed and toughness.
Sterling enters the 2025 season with renewed optimism following consecutive 6-4 campaigns. Head Coach Brent Schneider believes that this could be the year. This squad returns key veterans in the backfield, including seniors Zane Farney, Wyatt Newberry, and quarterback Logan Isaac. The Warriors aim to capitalize on their varsity experience and depth, blending youth and leadership as they look to climb higher in the Heart of America League standings.
First year head coach Lee Weber inherits plenty of talent for Sedgwick to be a Class 1A playoff factor again. Senior Owen Luper was an all-league two-way player for the Cardinals last year and will be the focal point on both sides of the ball. Sedgwick also brings back three offensive lineman. The Cardinals, who return 11 starters, will be one of the many teams in the mix for the Heart of America title.

Not many players truly effect the game in all three phases.
For Inman’s Korbyn McClellan he does it all. Whether that is being the kicker, kick returner, running back or safety, the Teutons know that if McClellan is involved, they are in good hands. Last season, McClellan and the Teutons finished 4-5, just a season removed from playing for a state championship. McClellan was named an all-league second team wide receiver and kick returner while rushing for 343 Yards, adding 456 more yards after the catch and 12 touchdowns while killing on defense with 30 tackles and five interceptions.
The junior has been playing football since he was in sixth grade and relies heavily on his speed while playing offense and defense, and then his pure leg

McClellan and the Teutons have been working around the clock this summer to make it back to a state championship game like they did in 2022.

As a sophomore quarterback last year, passing for 1,549 yards and 17 touchdowns, junior Maddox Wells is looking to step into a leadership role as an upperclassman.
Wells gets high praise from Salina Sacred Heart head coach Ryan Krajicek, not just for his athletic skill, but his character as well.
“Maddox is a gifted three-sport athlete that impresses me every time I watch him play. He is a competitor in every sense of the word and elevates those around him. Last season, he completed 62 percent of his passes, leading the highest scoring offense Sacred Heart has seen since the 2017 season. Maddox is an honor roll student who is just as enjoyable to teach as he is to coach,” Krajicek said.
Wells is always looking to improve, this offseason he focused on his field vision and pre-snap reads.
“I’ve been talking to my coaches and understanding what I should look for pre-snap and what options I have instead of just fixating on one person,” Wells said.
Losing some important receivers in the last graduating class, Wells is hoping to see his rushing yards improve. Also, with the loss of previous seniors, Wells is going to have to step into a leadership role.
“Knowing that I have to step into a leadership role, especially after how much I looked up to the guys last year motivates me,” Wells said.

Inman junior Malachi Brunk has become one of the top all-around players in Class 1A.
Brunk is the Teutons’ quarterback and starting strong safety. Brunk’s leadership and playmaking on both sides of the ball give Inman a serious shot at returning to the state championship conversation like they were back in 2022.
“(Malachi) is the best player I have seen in a while,” junior Korbyn McClellan said. “He reminds me of Tanner Heckel.”
Brunk totaled 629 rushing yards, 234 receiving yards, and eight touchdowns last season. On defense, he added 55 tackles, two interceptions, and nine pass breakups — earning first team all-league defensive back and second team all-league running back.
“I would say my biggest strengths are my football IQ and work ethic,” Brunk said. “My IQ comes from me watching any football game I can. I’ve always been glued to the TV whenever there’s a game on.”
Brunk’s journey with football began in preschool, and his dedication hasn’t slowed since.
“I started playing flag football in preschool and continued up until 6th grade. I think this has helped me because I understand the game so much better.”
With high expectations entering his junior season, Brunk has his sights set on some big time goals.
“The team goal for the year is to win the state championship,” Brunk said. “Some individual goals would be 1st Team All-State, 1A Player of the Year, eclipse 2,000 total yards, and get seven interceptions.”
He knows that winning starts with leadership.
“As an upperclassman, more people will look to me to be the example and do the right thing,” Brunk said. “All the offseason work is for nothing if you can’t translate it to the field and make big plays.”

Entering his seventh season at the helm of Sterling High School football, head coach Brent Schneider has built the program around two constants, relationships and high expectations.
“I want the kids to know that I truly care for them as individuals,” Schneider said. “I love Jesus and want to reflect that in my coaching style. I interact with a lot of positive reinforcement, so when I coach them hard, they know it’s because I care.”
Schneider doesn’t emphasize winloss goals. Instead, his message centers on doing the little things that winning requires” each day. Sterling’s formula is straightforward, play physical football, run the ball, stop the run, take care of the ball, and eliminate turnovers.
The Black Bears return several key playmakers on both sides
of the ball. Senior running backs Zane Farney and Wyatt Newberry will be pivotal. Farney and Newberry will do the same on the other side of the ball as well. Farney will stand out for his lockdown ability on the perimeter and Newberry as the team’s main safety. Senior lineman Kevin Ploutz is expected to anchor both sides of the line.
There’s also excitement about emerging talent. Sophomore Jacob Lewis will start at middle linebacker and contribute in
multiple offensive roles. Senior Logan Isaac, already an allstate linebacker, is poised for a breakout statistical year on offense after steady production in past seasons.
Sterling’s recent success stems from a cultural turnaround.
“We had some really down years, but we took leaps in our culture,” Schneider said. “It’s a constant battle, but our kids have pride and excitement about football again, and that’s really exciting.”

As a young kid, you dream about being on one of the best teams in your area and on your team. Logan Isaac of Sterling grew up to be that kid.
The senior has been starting for the last three years, and now has what it takes to hopefully lead his Sterling Black Bears to the promised land.
“I’m super blessed to be part of this team, and I’m excited for one last ride with my brothers,” Isaac said. “We have a special group and a great coaching staff, and we are ready to make big things happen this season.”
young guys.”
As important as it is to lead by example, Isaac also does a great job as one of their emotional and vocal guys in the locker room.
“Being a vocal leader is something that I’ve been working on for a long time, and it has shown on the field,” Isaac said. “Being in the position that I am, I am always communicating play calls and other adjustments to my teammates. I love seeing the young guys stepping up and being vocal during the JV games, because it shows that my teammates and I’s leadership is getting to the
Isaac was named a second-team all-league linebacker, and an all-state honorable mention linebacker after his 60 tackles, 3.5 TFLs, and two interceptions last season. The accolades are great, but the senior wants to end his career by making history

For Inman senior Cooper Wiens, football is about more than tackles and touchdowns— it’s about effort, leadership, and keeping his team grounded.
Wiens, a two-way starter at defensive end and right tackle, is known for his stamina, speed, and ability to calm his teammates when emotions run high.
“My ability to just keep going during a game and continuously give full effort for the entire game has led me to become someone my team can confidently rely on and believe in,” Wiens said. “I’ve had multiple occasions where we weren’t doing too well at halftime, but I made sure everyone came out with a clear head and something to prove.”
As a junior, Wiens earned all-league first team honors on both sides of the ball, recording 83 tackles, three sacks, 13 tackles for loss, and a forced fumble.
Now as a senior, his goals are even greater. Wiens wants 100 tackles, continued growth as a stronger leader, and a relentless effort to rub off on him and the rest of his
teammates to never take a play off. For the team, that means a winning record, improvement every practice, and a run at the state championship.
“I plan to make sure everyone has a strong work ethic, stays on top of schoolwork, and is feeling good mentally,” Wiens said. “I want to be there for them if they ever need help.”
With a seasoned offensive and defensive line, Clifton-Clyde will use their experience heading into the 2025 season. They open their year with two tough league opponents with Hanover and Frankfurt, and see lots of other talent later on. The Eagles will rely on all-league players such as Locklund Feight and Luke Nobert on defense, and others like Joseph Fahey and James Jarvis on offense. Many young faces will have to step up, including returning starting sophomore Ryan LeClair, who saw some time on the offensive line last season. A large number of all-league athletes return for Ell-Saline this season, and it might just be the key to their success. Senior running back Kas Kramer had over 1,000 yards rushing and 20 touchdowns to end last year’s season. Helping him on offense is quarterback Reese Krone who threw for almost 700 yards and no interceptions, and receiver Trey Williams who found the endzone multiple times himself. Linebacker Branton Gosvener also returns to take care of business on the other side of the ball. With many skilled players coming back, Ell-Saline will be a team to watch heading into the postseason.
Undefeated league-play set the standards high for Lincoln last year, and not much is different entering the 2025 season. Bringing back a strong veteran team with skill on both sides of the ball will be pivotal in the Leopards success this year. Jeremiah Miller will take over at quarterback again after having over 2,500 overall yards as a freshman. His weapon Xavier Miller, who was a first
team All-State receiver last season, also returns.
With just a few spots to fill for Little River, the Redskins will rely on returning talent from last season’s 8-3 team. Big offensive weapons will be seeing the field again, including all-league and All-State players such as Jaren Garrison and Jhet Ewertt. Garrison rushed for over 800 yards last season, and Ewertt had just under 100 combined tackles. Five of the Redskins’ eight wins came from league play, where they went undefeated last season.
After a season cut short in overtime, Sylvan-Lucas is hungry and out for blood this season. Even with a good number of graduated seniors, the Mustangs bring back a confident force on defense. All-league athletes Layne Buttenhoff and Zayne Maupin will see a lot of time on both sides of the ball, as well as Cai Labertew at linebacker. The Mustangs will see some tough competitors down the road, including Lincoln and Clifton-Clyde.
Oxford ended last season 7-3, and while losing a large number to graduation, the Wildcats will still return a lot of skill to both sides of the ball. With only one year of experience at guard, senior Pearson Rush still ended last season as a first team all-league lineman. Along with Rush, Tyler Brown also returns. Another first team all-league lineman, Brown had 50 total tackles last year and over 15 hurries on the quarterback.

Lincoln’s Xavier Miller made big waves on the offensive side of the ball last season. Miller was named a first team all-league skill player for the Leopards.
“I’m most excited to just get the pads pack on and play the sport I love and compete at it,” Miller said. “Also to just spend time with my boys and do team bonding activities and also to hopefully get some recognition.”
With endless team goals to make it to the top, Miller is also excited to showcase his talent under the lights again.
“Some goals I have for this season is to get over 850 receiving yards and also getting more than 15 touchdowns,” Miller said. “I also want to be ranked as the top receive another year from the sports in Kansas rankings. And maybe also receive some stars as well. Another one of my goals is to greatly help my team into our first playoff win and hopefully a championship this year. We’ve been close these past years but I have a good feeling we’ll get over that stump this year.”
After going undefeated in league play last season, Miller and the team is hungry for more league matchups and victories.
“Some games I’m ready to play in is our season opener against Ellis,” Miller said. “We played them last year as an opener and only lost to them by a touchdown and we were missing our starting quarterback. So we are very excited to play them and beat them this year. I’m also excited to play our rivals Sylvan-Lucas. We beat them last year by a big margin so we’re excited to play them again and have the same outcome.”

Running back Jaren Garrison out of Little River played a key role on offense last season.
Rushing for over 1,000 yards, Garrison was a first team all-league running back.
Over the offseason, Garrison has been able to work on both the physical and mental aspects of the game.
“We have a very solid summer strength and conditioning program that has always been huge for our program,” Garrison said. “A weakness I want to focus on is going 110 percent every second of the game.”
While always trying to better himself, Garrison is more worried about being the best teammate he can be.
“We’re always focused on being better than last season,” Garrison said. I’m not a big stat guy; I really care about doing whatever the team needs to be the best we can be.”
After they sent him home last season, Garrison is looking to get some revenge on a strong Central Plains team.
“We are looking forward to the Central Plains game, just because of them taking us out last season,” Garrison said.
Only a junior, Garrison’s future plans are still up in the air.
“I’m taking it one year at a time and am not sure what I want to do in the future,” Garrison said.
Kas Kramer gets ready to return to Ell-Saline for his senior year after a standout junior season. With over 1,000 rushing yards, over 100 carries, and 20 touchdowns, and an all-league and All-State mention, Kramer is eager to get back out on the field to do it again.
“My main goal for this season is for my team to make it to the state championship game this year,” Kramer said. “We had a rough ending last year so this goal is definitely one we are going to chase hard. Another goal is to accomplish 1000 rushing yards again.”
With the season right around the corner, Kramer trained all offseason to strengthen both his physical and mental abilities.
“I prepared for this season by staying in the weight room this summer and getting my team into the weight room as well,” Kramer said. “One weakness I want to work on is blocking from the running back position and helping my quarterback out with that.”
One last season for Kramer leaves him with a long to-do list, and he’s excited to meet up with some familiar faces.
“I’m excited to take on Central Plains and Little River again, both those games are really fun and competitive,” Kramer said. “My most memorable moment is when we stopped Little River from getting the two point conversion and we upset them by two points, winning the game.”
Although his last season as a Cardinal, Kramer hopes to continue his athletic journey in the future.
“My future plan is to play football in college as a running back or a wide receiver,” Kramer said.

Jhet Ewertt of Little River had one memorable season for the Redskins last season, and was named a first team allleague free safety. While it was one of his best seasons, it was also one of his favorites.
“My most memorable moment was when we played West Elk in the playoffs last year,” Ewertt said. “It was raining and the whole field was muddy. That atmosphere made it a game we will remember forever.”
To keep up with competition, Ewertt spent the offseason training and working to strengthen his weaknesses.
“I’ve been lifting and doing football workouts during the summer,” Ewertt said. “I’ve also been trying to gain weight and get stronger in the weight room.”
While working to better himself as an athlete, Ewertt is also planning on helping lead his team to some big wins this season.
“Some of my goals are being a good leader and teammate this season,” Ewertt said. “I hope to continue to contribute to our defense but also be a big part of our offense. We’re hoping to make an even further run in the playoffs this year.”
When their season was cut short, Ewertt knew which games were going to mean the most this year, and a rematch is what Ewertt and the team has been looking forward to.
“We lost to Central Plains in the playoffs last year so that will be a big game for us this year,” Ewertt said.

Many have been excited to see what Beloit St. John’s-Tipton has up their sleeve this year. Under the leadership of head coach Lance Bergmann, Beloit St. John’s-Tipton are looking towards the future — and a winning record.
“Our expectation is to experience growth as a program in every way,” assistant coach Parker Gates said. “Our numbers have increased over the summer which has been and will be beneficial every practice. We want our players to improve each day in some way and build upon it as the season progresses.”
throw at them.”
With many new faces in new positions, Beloit St. John’s-Tipton will look to key players such as Kaden Rabe and Dominic Eilert on the offensive line, sophomores Brooks Dunstan and Kaden Phillips at quarterback and running back, and John Mick at tight end.
“Our boys have shown the desire to improve and get better all summer,” Gates said. “We have a group that has a good amount of overall athleticism. Our group is intelligent and adapts quickly to new things that we
While the schedule is never easy, Bergmann, Gates, and the rest of the squad are looking forward to the competition every week.
“Each game will be important stepping stones for us as we navigate a handful of new players and youth,” Gates said. “Historically, Beloit St. John’s-Tipton vs Osborne has been a rivalry of sorts in many sports. Both teams bring in good young groups that will be fun to watch develop over the next few years. Beloit St. John’s-Tipton vs Thunder Ridge has also shown to be a competitive battle, resulting in a few thrillers over the years.”
The Hutchinson Central Christian Cougars return a solid nucleus off their 2024 9-2 season. The Cougars only graduated two seniors so they will have a lot of experience at various positions. Last year the Cougars went 4-0 in district and made a sectional playoff appearance and hope to go even farther this year, with muscle key two-way contributors.
Even though the Cunningham Wildcats lost their largest group of seniors in the last couple years, they have a lot of young guys fighting for positions. Last season the Wildcats went 10-1 finishing runner ups to Weskan. With seniors Dylan Halderson and Skyler Thimesch and junior Stephen Kerschen all returning they look to make another run at the state championship game.
Year in and year out, Hanover has one of the top teams in 8-Man Division II. The Wildcats bring back 10 starters from last season’s team that went 8-2. Tanner Bruna was an all-league offensive and defensive lineman. With depth to be effective at most positions, Hanover should have the team to advance further in the playoffs this season.
The Peabody-Burns Warriors finished last season 7-2 and 4-0 in districts. They return five starters on the offensive side as well as five on the defensive. This season they will line up in 8 different formations, in hopes that it will make it tougher for another team to have a set defensive plan against them. On the defensive side they return some players who are described as hard hitting and fearless. The Warriors have the team to make a deep run in the playoffs once again.
Argonia/Attica is going to be a young team this season, but after a 7-3 finish last year, they are ready to fill some big shoes. What the Trojans lack in team size this year they make up for in speed with an aggressive defense and junior quarterback Maddox Hemberger to lead the way on offense. Of the few returners that the Trojans have, senior Carson Vineyard will step up on both sides of the ball and lead this young team to another successful season.
The Rural Vista Heat are returning a large senior class this year after an impressive 7-3 season, with their three losses coming from ranked teams. The Heat will have a strong offensive line in seniors Mason Marsh, Trent Hoff and Tucker Mein. The Heat return four, four-year starters and multiple two and three year starters as well.

Rural Vista Senior Kole Riedy is excited to play his final year of high school football.
“I am excited about our new assistant football coach that we just added. His name is Joe Ross and he will bring tons of coaching experience with him. Hoping he will be able to improve our weaknesses and get us to be a solid defensive team,” Riedy said.
Riedy plays running back and cornerback for the Heat and racked up some impressive stats on both sides of the ball last year.
Riedy had 457 rushing yards on 59 carries and 11 touchdowns. He also has 42 tackles and three interceptions which earned him first team all-league defensive back.
Even though Riedy plans to continue to play football after college he still spent the offseason preparing like it was his last.

this upcoming sports season. We had a couple 5 on 5 over the course of the Summer. Also, we had our team football camp to get us back in the swing of things for this season,” Riedy said.
As a leader for the Heat, Riedy knows there are places he needs to improve to be better as a leader.
“As an upcoming senior I know that is something that I need to improve on and would be beneficial towards our success as a team,” Riedy said. “A goal we have as a team is to get better and better every week with the end goal of making a deep playoff run.”

Hanover senior Tanner Bruna is excited to play his last season as a Wildcat, and is motivated to make his community proud.
“This program has a proud history, and people expect us to win - but over the last few years, we haven’t fully lived up to that. I take that personally. I want to help bring that winning standard back,” Bruna said.
As a senior, Bruna is the leader for this team, the one who sets the tone and pushes everyone to be their best.
“I’m not just here to be everyone’s friend, I’m here to be a good teammate. That means holding people accountable, pushing guys when they’re slacking, and leading by example whether we’re in the weight room, on the field, or off the field. At the end of the day, I care about this team and I want us all to succeed, even if that means having tough conversations or pushing someone out of their comfort zone,” Bruna said.
Bruna has been helping prepare this team ever since the 2024 season ended, and has been focusing heavily on the relationship aspect of the game.
“We’ve been running 7-on-7 on our own time, just staying active and building that game chemistry. We’ve also just been spending a lot of time together as a team off the field, just hanging out, building trust, and making sure we’re tight as a whole,” Bruna said.
With this being Bruna’s last year playing football, he is most excited to get this last chance to play with this particular group.
“We’ve grown up together, we’ve been through wins, losses, hard practices, and everything in between - and this is our final shot to leave it all on the field. I want to soak in every moment, every snap, every game, and make sure I have no regrets when it’s all said and done,” Bruna said.

Coming off a memorable season last year, making it farther than any Peabody-Burns team has in the last 20 years, the state quarterfinals, junior Aiden Hurst hopes to build on that season and make it all the way to the state championship game this year.
Hurst plays quarterback and safety for Peabody-Burns and spent the offseason working on his field vision.
“I want to be able to see the field at all angles in order for the wide receivers to have the best opportunity to catch the ball and not get injured in doing so,” Aiden Hurst said.
As a junior, Hurst also used this offseason to get his name out there, attending camps at Friends University and McPherson college.
Despite wanting to go to college on a football scholarship, Hurst stays in shape year round by playing basketball and baseball.
Even while juggling being a three sport athlete, Hurts still takes time to study his old football film to see where he needs to improve and sets goals for next season.
Hurst’s goals are; 85% completion percentage, being a great leader for all of my teammates.
Averaging 350 yards per game. Keeping positive attitudes, no matter the situation. Making
it all the way to the State Championship and winning.
Entering his junior year, Hurts sees himself in a leadership type role for his team.
“Someone who helps pick everyone up when it’s needed. I am someone that the team and coaches can count on,” Hurst said.

Junior Jameson Miles has big goals for PeabodyBurns this season and wants everyone to know their name.
“We have some serious talent and people have slept on Peabody Burns for far too long,” Miles said.
Miles plays tight end and defensive end for Peabody-Burns and is just ready to get back on the field.
“I am ready to pick up the momentum from last year and go further in championship gameswinning state would be well deserved for this team; we are powerful- we work hard and play even harder,” Miles said.
Miles spent this offseason hitting the weight room every morning before work and attending every team-mandated workout, with the goal to be better.
“I am only ever in competition with the player that I was last season, so I need more completed passes, more yards gained, and more points made,” Miles said.
Miles is the motivator and leader for Peabody-Burns, he plays both sides of the ball and jumps in wherever he is needed.
“I try to show the younger guys that team work makes dream work as long as you’re committed, and I love gassing my boys up,” Miles said. “My goal this year is to work with my team running a tighter ship and making our way to state.”

Hellas Construction installed its Matrix Helix turf at Kansas State’s Bill Snyder Family Sta-dium and two other practice fields last spring.
“We are excited to install this product in our football facilities,” said Gene Taylor, Director of Athletics at K-State in a press release by Hellas. “Hellas’ single-source model provides us a top-tier playing surface installed by the same company that designed and built it.”
The new turf at K-State will feature the following: shape-memory monofilament fibers that enhance cleat interaction and reduce infill migration, delivering a stable and consistent playing surface. A durable, curled fiber design that locks infill in place, minimizing splash-out and ensuring long-term performance. Cushdrain® shock pad, an elastic layer that ab-sorbs impact, reducing player fatigue and injury risk. Hellas’ inhouse installation crews, ensuring expert craftsmanship and eliminating third-party contractors.
“Our team has played on a Hellas surface several times – at the 2022 Big 12 Champion-ship in Arlington at AT&T Stadium and the 2021 Texas Bowl in Houston at NRG,” said K-State Head Coach Chris Klieman in the statement to Hellas. “The fields were top-notch, and I know our players and staff will see the benefits from this new surface.”
Hellas’ Matrix Helix turf is the preferred synthetic turf system of 14 NFL teams, including the Indianapolis Colts, Dallas Cowboys, Tennessee Titans, Houston Texans, and Los Angeles Rams. With more NFL facilities featuring Matrix Helix turf than any other synthetic system, K-State is aligning with the highest standards of professional football.
“As a K-State alumna, this project is especially meaningful to me,” said Michelle Kuhns, Re-gional Vice President for Hellas’ Central Region. “I’m thrilled to see the Wildcats join Texas Tech as Big 12 programs that have chosen Matrix Helix turf. We’re excited to bring our flagship system to
Manhattan.” With installation scheduled for completion ahead of the 2025 season, the Wildcats will take the field on a turf system designed for durability, safe-ty, and game-day performance for years to come.”
Hellas provides a complete scope of services for sports surfaces and amenities including manufacturing, design/build, construction, installation, service, and maintenance.

The history and prestige is what led Wichita East’s L.T. Robinson to choose Hutchinson Community College to play football.
Year after year, the Blue Dragons produce some of the best junior college players in the nation.
“They have produced so many players year in and year out that are currently at the levels that I want to be,” Robinson said. “The biggest strength of the school is the community around the school being supportive. The biggest strength for the football program would be that there is a certain structure in how things are done that Coach Dallas has established for players to be successful.”
Being just a freshman last season, Robinson was able to live the dream most athletes want to accomplish.
“A memory that stands out to me during
my time here is winning the National Champion-ship, of course,” Robinson said. “We faced adversity during the regular season and over-came it as a team. There is no feeling like winning a championship, let alone a national championship.”
There is no hesitation from Robinson on recommending Hutch CC to a perspective student athlete or just a student.
“The community is great,” Robinson said. “When it comes to school, the staff does their best to work with you whether it is academically, financially, or in the dorms. For football, the proof is in the pudding. We are the top Junior College school in the nation for a reason. A system has been established and if you want to be great, get developed and dominate at the next level, Hutch CC is the place to be.”
Daniel Myears, Mulvane High School, is set to serve as the head coach for the West squad for the 53rd Kansas Shrine Bowl on Saturday, June 27, 2026. The head coaches are selected from the group of assistant coaches from the previous year’s game after a vote from the previous year’s coaching staff, camp directors and support staff. The 53rd Kansas Shrine Bowl will be played on Saturday, June 27, 2026, at Welch Stadium on the campus of Emporia State University in Emporia, Kansas.
Myears is entering his eighth season as the head coach at Mulvane, and his 23rd season overall on the coaching staff at Mulvane. Myears has a 31-35 overall record at Mulvane following a 7-3 record during the 2024 season.
“I am truly honored and humbled to be named the head coach of the West squad for the 53rd Kansas Shrine Bowl in June 2026,” said Myears. “My experience as an assistant coach in 2025 was incredible, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to once again give back to the Shriners Organization and be a part of this meaningful event.”
The West team won the 2025 Kansas Shrine Bowl, 26-8, to extend their all-time series advantage to 32-18-2. The 2026 game returns to Emporia, where the East has won the last two games played at Welch Stadium and four of the six all-time games played on the campus of Emporia State University.
