5A TEAMS TO WATCH

BOYS

Salina Central returns just one starter in 2026. Noah Peck, a 6-5 forward, averaged four points and six rebounds and will be joined by fellow big man, Greyson Jones, who is 6-6. In order for the Mustangs to be successful, they must find some perimeter help to complement their interior strength. With four starters returning, Salina South has a chance to dramatically improve on its seven-win team from last year. The Cougars bring back Gavin Devoe, who averaged 10 points per game. Also back is guard Sawyer Walker, who averaged nine points per game.

GIRLS

Salina Central enters the season with momentum and confidence under head coach Paige Talbott. The Lady Mustangs return a strong senior core led by Lexie Guerrero and Grace Ostmeyer who are a duo that brings leadership, scoring, and toughness on both ends of the floor. Their upperclassmen have a lot of depth and versatility, giving Central a balanced lineup capable of competing with anyone in the AVCTL. The Mustangs are aiming to turn close games into wins and make a push toward postseason success.

Across town, Salina South is poised to take another step forward under head coach Justin Ebert. The Cougars bring back nearly their entire rotation from last season, including seniors Paityn Fritz, Brooklyn Jordan, and Brylee Moss who are a group that has played a lot of basketball together and understands what it takes to win. With over 80 percent of their scoring returning, South will rely on its experience, grit, and leadership to stay competitive in every matchup. Even though the Salina South boys basketball team won just seven games last season, returner Easton Wilcox has high hopes that the Cougars can fly under the radar this season.

“I am most excited that we have a lot of returning players and we could surprise a lot of teams this year,” Wilcox said.

While Wilcox’s statistics a year ago weren’t what he wanted, he put in the work in the offseason so that he can take significant strides.

“I am trying to improve on being more consistent with my shots,” Wilcox said. “I have been in the gym doing workouts to improve it and getting more shots up. Also getting better being a facilitator. I worked on that while playing AAU games and when I’m in the gym doing workouts.”

Wilcox has big-time goals for both the Cougars and himself in 2026. “My team goals are I want to be above 500 and make it to state and have a run in state,” Wilcox said. “Individual goals are being the best shooter on the team and leading the team in steals and assists and also average over 10 points a game.”

With a strong group of underclassmen ready to step up, we’re focused on growth, team chemistry, and competing hard every night.

Salina Central’s Lexie Guerrero

Salina Central senior Lexie Guerrero embodies everything a coach looks for in a leader. As the Mustangs’ returning point guard, Guerrero enters her final season ready to guide her team with composure and confidence.

Basketball has been part of Guerrero’s life since kindergarten, and over the years, she’s grown from a young competitor into a natural leader. After moving to Salina her junior year, she quickly made an impression at Central — earning honorable mention all-league honors last season.

“My personal goal for this year is to finish my senior year strong and leave with no regrets,” Guerrero said. “For my team, I want us to build better chemistry and play strong all the way through games while leaving it all on the court.”

Salina Central head coach Paige Talbott praised Guerrero for her leadership, basketball IQ, and consistency both on and off the court.

“Lexie is the kind of athlete that elevates any program and team to the next level,” Talbott said. “Her point guard mentality and determination to succeed and lead

others to success helps drive the team. As a senior leader and point guard, she’s the floor general who keeps everyone organized while bringing a calm, confident presence to the floor.”

Talbott said what truly makes Guerrero special is her creativity and selflessness.

“What makes her special is her ability to create,” Talbott said. “She’s not just a talented player — she makes the people around her better. Her passion for the game has had a huge impact on our program, and I know she will continue to leave her mark. Lexie is a fierce competitor who will never shy away from any competition. She holds herself to a high standard and is looking to accomplish big goals for her senior season.”

Salina Central’s Noah Peck

Over the past few seasons, Salina Central’s Noah Peck feels like the excitement and environment for Mustang basketball has waned.

But Peck is optimistic that is going to change this season.

“But with the 2026 senior class, I believe we’re bringing it back to its roots,” Peck said. “We’re creating a sense of excitement, energy, and pride that will fill the Brick House once again. My teammates and I have grown up together and faced plenty of challenges throughout our sports careers, which has built a strong bond and a shared purpose. We’re not playing for individual stats, we’re playing for each other, and for our families that support us each game.”

Peck struggled with consistency on offense last year. He was not confident in what he can offer as a scorer.

That was his primary focus in the offseason.

“This year, my goal is to be dominant in the paint and have a stronger offensive presence,” Peck said. “During the offseason, I gained 30 pounds for football, and I plan to use that added strength to my advantage under the rim.”

Last season, Peck was an honorable mention

all-league performer, but he thinks he can achieve even greater things in 2026.

“I want to be one of the top players in the league, leading in rebounds and blocks, and earning a spot on an all-league team,” Peck said. “Both as a team and as individuals, we’ve set ambitious goals for the season, and with the work we’ve put in, we’re confident that they’re within reach.”

Salina Central’s Grace Ostmeyer

Coming off an impressive sophomore season that earned her first team allleague honors, Salina Central junior Grace Ostmeyer is ready to take another leap as one of the Mustangs’ top returning players.

“My biggest strengths are my ability to be a two-level scorer,” Ostmeyer said. “Being able to drive as well as shoot outside shots, my defense is also something I consider my biggest strength because I can guard 1-5.”

Now entering her junior season, Ostmeyer’s focus has shifted toward leadership and growth — both as a player and as a person.

“My personal goal for this year is to really step up as a leader and fine-tune all of my skills,” Ostmeyer said. “For our team, it’s about finding our rhythm since a lot of people don’t have a lot of experience, and using that to get us far in our season.”

Ostmeyer has been playing basketball since third grade and has developed into a steady presence on the court, known for her poise and maturity.

“I believe that I can be a level-headed leader for my team this year,” Ostmeyer said. “I never really get worked up on the court, and combining that with my varsity experience, I can keep calm and provide an example.”

Salina Central head coach Paige Talbott praised Ostmeyer’s impact on the program and her commitment to constant improvement.

“Grace is the kind of athlete every coach wants in their program — tough, coachable, and committed to getting better every single day,” Talbott said. “She’s competitive, dedicated, and plays with a high basketball IQ. Grace leads our team in multiple statistical categories by working hard and battling. Her character speaks volumes and is a reflection of our program and team.”

Parenting and Back Pain: What’s Really Behind the Aches

Back pain is one of the most common health issues in the United States, affecting an estimated 65–80% of adults at some point in their lives. For parents, the familiarity can feel even higher. Between carpool lines, work demands, stressful evenings, and constantly lifting kids, it’s no surprise that so many moms and dads report nagging aches or even disabling flare-ups. In this article, we’ll break down some of the most common reasons parents develop back pain and share a few physical therapy–based strategies to help keep you feeling better.

Endless Sitting

Imagine this familiar story for many parents: they spend 30 minutes in the car line for school drop-off, then head straight to the office for eight hours in a chair, only to spend the evening shuttling kids to extra curriculars or sitting on hard bleachers at a game. For many parents, that’s a normal weekday.

Sitting itself isn’t inherently harmful, but long periods in the same position, especially with the low back in a rounded (lumbar flexion) posture, can leave you feeling stiff and sore. Like most things, the problem isn’t the posture itself, but the lack of movement and variety.

PT Tip #1: Movement breaks

I often prescribe movement breaks throughout the workday for my parentpatients. The goal isn’t to increase strength but to get them out of static positions and provide a dose of movement into positions they’re often neglecting. The majority of the time I will give extension focused exercises like bird dogs, band pull-aparts, and thoracic extensions on a foam roller. These can help counteract the hours of sitting.

PT Tip #2: Lumbar support

If your back aches specifically during sitting, a simple lumbar support cushion can sometimes make a big difference. It’s certainly not necessary, but it may provide relief for some people.

Repetitive and Awkward Lifting

Parenting is full of lifting tasks that don’t fit neatly into a gym exercise: bending over to pick up a toddler 100 times a day, strapping squirming kids into car seats, or holding a baby on one hip while cooking dinner. These repetitive movements add up quickly, and can contribute to potential back pain.

PT Tip #1: Movement strategies

If bending down to grab your child aggravates your back, try changing the way you lift. Using a hip hinge or squat strategy spreads the load across the hips, knees, and spine in an alternative way that may feel better. Similarly, if you tend to carry your child on one hip, make a conscious effort to switch sides periodically. These small changes reduce repetitive stress to the same tissues.

PT Tip #2: Strengthen your back

This is one of the most neglected muscle groups that I see as a physical therapist. Many people avoid training their back due to fear of injury, when in reality a stronger back is more resilient to the demands of parenting. Exercises like neutral-spine deadlifts, Jefferson curls, and rotational movements build capacity across multiple patterns. The stronger your back is, the bigger the buffer between you and injury.

Nutrition

Busy parents often find themselves grabbing fast food between activities or eating leftover dinosaur chicken nuggets from their kids’ plates. While convenient, these habits can lead to a pro-inflammatory diet which has been linked to increased risk of back pain. Balanced gives your tissues what they need to recover and stay healthy.

PT Tip #1: Plan your meals

Contact us today to schedule your appointment!

Meal planning doesn’t have to mean marathon prep sessions on Sundays. Simply

deciding what dinner will look like each night of the week takes the mental load off and reduces last-minute, unhealthy choices. Even jotting down a simple list on the fridge can help prevent the evening scramble which often leads to frustration and an expensive Uber Eats bill.

Stress

Parenting is stressful, no surprise there. But research consistently shows that psychological stress and back pain are linked. Stress can increase muscle tension, pain perception, and reduce your body’s ability to recover. Over time, this creates a vicious cycle: pain adds stress, and stress worsens pain.

PT Tip #1: Stress management

While stress can’t be eliminated, it can be managed. Techniques like mindfulness meditation, and breathing exercises can help. Self-care also matters: try scheduling an hour outside of your normal work, childcare, and exercise commitments to do something that you enjoy and provides you with happiness.

Final Thoughts

Back pain in parents is rarely caused by just one thing. Instead, it can be the combination of prolonged positions, repetitive lifting, poor diet choices, and constant stress that wears the body down. The good news is that small changes like moving more throughout the day, lifting with different strategies, strengthening your back, fueling your body well, and managing stress can all add up to less pain and more energy to enjoy time with your kids.

If your back pain is interfering with your daily life, consider working with a physical therapist. A PT can help you find the right mix of exercises, strategies, and lifestyle changes tailored to your specific needs.

4A TEAMS TO WATCH

BOYS

McPherson is the defending state champion and with first team all-state guard Jett Pyle back, the Bullpups are the team to beat yet again. Even with only one other varsity contributor returning (Cade Strathman), McPherson still has a deep and talented roster. Head coach Kurt Kinnamon is hoping the team’s backcourt and shooting ability will offset a roster that is lacking in size.

Concordia brings back three starters from last season’s 14-win team. Chance Parker averaged 10 points and eight rebounds en route to a first team allleague selection. Also returning is Ayden Krier (nine points per game) and Boone Richard (eight points per game). The Panthers will be a team capable of making the state tournament.

Abilene went 16-7 last season but brings back just three players from that team. Head coach Kyle Taylor expects junior varsity players from last season to emerge to join seniors Taygen Funston and Levi Evans as well as sophomore Kolt Becker. On paper, the Cowboys should take a step back, but they will still have a team that can be competitive.

Even with graduating three key seniors, Clay Center still brings back an experienced roster. Head coach Dalton Haist will have to lean heavily on his underclassmen who already saw some playing time last season. Keeping a consistent winning record over the years doesn’t look to be changing any time soon, and Clay Center will be looking to continue on with their success.

While last season didn’t end how they wanted, the Concordia Panthers are starting fresh this season. The Panthers bring back one of the most experienced rosters in the league, as senior Charlize Cash returns to lead on both sides of the ball. The Panthers could be a huge shock for a few.

The McPherson Bullpups return four of their starting five from last season. Multiple all-league players return for the Bullpups, and they will rely on that experience heavily throughout the season. Juniors Rylie Whitfield and Piper Alvord will step up this season, along with a handful of seniors. Between the depth and cohesion, you can expect to see McPherson playing ball in March.

McPherson’s Jett Pyle

The McPherson boys basketball program has won back-to-back state championships and returning all-state guard Jett Pyle’s sole focus this season is to make it three in a row.

“I am most excited for playing with my friends and defending our state championship one last year,” Pyle said. “I want to have a three-peat as a state champion and Individually I’m looking to be the best player I can be and doing whatever it takes for my team to win.”

Pyle averaged 14 points, four rebounds and four assists per game last season but those numbers are not satisfying for Pyle, who is expected to be one of the top players in Class 4A this season.

“I have been working out to get stronger and more athletic and playing basketball to get more skilled every day,” Pyle said. “I wanted to get stronger and more athletic for the upcoming season.”

There are a number of colleges who are interested in Pyle next year, but he has not made a decision at the time of this profile being written, but he plans on basketball being a big part of his life.

“I plan to play basketball in college and major in business and eventually run my own business,” Pyle said. “I am undecided where I want to go.”

Concordia’s Charlize Cash

Concordia’s Charlize Cash has spent the entire offseason training for the moment she gets to step back out on the court. Cash was a first team all-league selection for the Panthers last season.

“I am preparing for the season by getting in the gym and getting shots up, going on runs and doing sprints to get in shape, and going with my brother and his friends to go against bigger and better competition,” Cash said. “A particular weakness I want to improve on this season is shooting more and not getting down on myself after one mistake because there is more games to play.”

With high expectations for the 2025-2026 campaign, Cash knows Concordia’s season is going to look a lot different than last year’s.

“I want to get at least 85 steals for the team and I hope to have a winning season this year, and hopefully to make it to state,” Cash said. “With

the experience that we have coming back from last year and some new additions to the team I think we will be pretty fun to watch.”

Cash doesn’t plan to end her basketball journey just yet, but is undecided as to where she would like to continue

“I have multiple opportunities to further my basketball career, I just have to decide which one,” Cash said. “I would like to get a business degree because I hope to open my own animal business one day.”

SALINA AREA GIRLS POLL WINNER

McPherson’s Rylie Whitfield

Rylie Whitfield of McPherson has been putting in the work in multiple sports, and as basketball season arrives, she’s putting all that preparation out on the court.

“Basketball shape is by far the hardest to get in out of my three sports,” Whitfield said.

“Going on runs and getting shots up is how I have been preparing. This upcoming season I am also going to continue working on my leadership and my voice on the court; I think holding each other to a higher standard is very important for our success as a team.”

After a challenging season last year, Whitfield knows this year will be different as everyone has started to settle into new positions.

“This last season we were very young and simply inexperienced,” Whitfield said. “A goal I think we can have as a team is a better record than the last, along with fewer turnovers in the early part of the season. I also think that having a new coach last year was a big adjustment for us, and obviously it took time for Coach Kinnamon to learn how

we play and put people in the correct roles.”

Whitfield’s excitement for the season comes not just from the game, but also from playing with teammates she loves.

“When you love the people you play with, it makes the season so much more fun,” Whitfield said. “I’m super excited to see what we can do as a team, as well as what my teammates and I can do individually.”

3A TEAMS TO WATCH

BOYS

Southeast of Saline enter the season as a dark horse in 3A with the talent and experience to make a deep postseason push. Southeast of Saline brings back four key contributors from last year’s roster, including standout senior guard Gannon Jacobson, one of the top all-around players in the state. Joining him are Tiernan Ptacek, Adam Theil, Isaiah Kejr, and Grady Gebhardt, forming a tough, senior-led core that knows how to win. Head coach Bryson Flax’s group prides itself on disciplined defense and unselfish offense, and with improved depth and chemistry, the Trojans have all the tools to be one of 3A’s top-tier programs once again.

Head coach Doug Schneider’s Smoky Valley squad returns a senior-heavy lineup looking to bounce back from a rebuilding season. With veterans Ty Heitschmidt, Braylon Olson, and Kristian Ryan leading the way, the Vikings have experience, toughness, and size across the board. While wins were hard to come by last year, this group’s continuity and leadership could spark a turnaround. Smoky Valley has the pieces to surprise opponents, especially if its defensive effort and team chemistry continue to build throughout the season. Expect the Vikings to play a physical, hard-nosed brand of basketball that makes them a tough out in every league matchup.

After a rare down year, Jeff Landon’s Ellsworth Bearcats are reloaded and ready to reestablish themselves as one of the most competitive teams in the NCAA. With four starters returning, including seniors Cooper McGowan, Tucker Goss, and Ethan Tully, along with junior guard Jace Thomasson. The Bearcats bring leadership, depth, and a balanced attack. This group thrives on physical play and defensive toughness, traits that have long defined Landon’s program. With additional varsity experience throughout the roster and a hunger to bounce back, Ellsworth has the look of a team capable of returning to form and contending for a league title.

GIRLS

Ellsworth enters the new season with momentum after a strong 15-6 finish in 2025. With an experienced senior core — Lainey Peschka, Jo Lindsley, Josie Kueser, Alexis Moore, and Elyse Haxton — the Bearcats are going to have to use their cohesion and versatility. With consistency from a large group of seniors, Ellsworth could be contenders in Class 3A. Heading into the new season with experience and optimism after finishing 15-6 a year ago is the Southeast of Saline Trojans. Returning most of their scoring, the Trojans will rely on senior leaders Abigail Pearson and Suttyn Douglas, along with talented sophomores Reese Heinrich and Kyiah Samuelson. Coach Shauna Smith notes that last year’s growing pains have turned into valuable experience. Expect the Trojans to be a tough contender in Class 3A this season.

The Minneapolis Lions will face some difficulties this season, but with returning forwards Baylee Randall-Hurt and Riley Robinson anchoring the frontcourt, Minneapolis brings experience and size inside. The challenge will be in the backcourt, where the Lions must replace their top four guards from last season. Seniors Addison Abell and juniors Miley McClure and Sierra Cosaart will be tasked with stepping into larger roles. Minneapolis could make a huge stride this season in 3A.

We had a really good summer, attending team camps and quality time on the court. We are excited to get started and make a run for another league title and more.”

Lyons’ Sierra Belote

Sierra Belote of Lyons has been ready to take on her senior season all year, and is excited to accomplish her long list of goals and ambitions for the season ahead.

“One of my main goals this year is to focus on my mindset,” Belote said. “One thing I have learned is the importance of having a good mindset and being involved in pregame activities in the locker room. This year, I want to obtain more rebounds and steals. I hope to have another postseason honor as well.”

Over the offseason, Belote trained and conditioned with other sports throughout the year to keep her prepared for the upcoming season.

“This year, I have focused on gaining strength, and I’m doing my best to adapt to the height advantage that others have,” Belote said. “Individually, I want to work and fine-tune some of these skills to try to gain an advantage.”

With one last season ahead, Belote is looking forward to a number of traditions and memories.

“I am excited to take on one last season with my fellow seniors,” Belote said. “I’m excited to see what challenges we can overcome together. Also, when we celebrate Coach Bowers birthday midseason. We always slam Freddy’s whipped

Belote hopes to play some postseason ball in a few months, but is also looking to take on a tough rival.

“I’m excited to take on Sedgwick,” Belote said. “Last year, it was neck and neck. I could feel the adrenaline and pressure through all four quarters. It was the most exciting game.”

cream in his face!”

Southeast of Saline’s Abigail Pearson and Kyiah Samuelson

Southeast of Saline is bringing the heat this season as they return both Abigail Pearson and Kyiah Samuelson. After several years of success, they don’t plan on stopping now.

“We have been league champions throughout my high school career and I intend to continue this streak,” Pearson said. “We have been the runners-up at the Sterling Invitational Tournament the past two seasons and I have a goal to win it all this season. I have a postseason goal to play in the substrate final and earn the opportunity to compete for a state championship in March.”

For Samuelson, the goals for the season don’t look too different, as she sees high potential in every aspect.

“One of my main goals is to work on controlling the speed of the game,” Samuelson said. “All of my goals for this season are team-oriented. I believe we have the team this season for the chance of a state run.”

While postseason play is on everyone’s agenda, the road getting there will not be easy.

“Many of our league opponents are wellcoached and have experienced players,” Pearson said. “It is always fun to play at a high level of competition. With our history of success in the league, other teams bring high energy which creates a fun atmosphere to play in.”

Winning big league and rival games will be key for Southeast of Saline, but Samuelson is confident that the team will be bringing home some wins.

“A game I’m excited to take on is Hesston,” Samuelson said. “I believe our team has grown stronger since last year. I am excited to compete against good teams.”

Smoky Valley’s Ty Heitschmidt

Smoky Valley senior Ty Heitschmidt has been a big force in the paint the last couple of years for the Vikings. The senior primarily plays center but can slide over to power forward when needed, giving the Vikings flexibility and toughness down low.

Heitschmidt’s passion for basketball began early, playing in a local rec league coached by his father. That early start laid the foundation for a player who has become a cornerstone for Smoky Valley basketball. After averaging 14.4 points, 7.3 rebounds, 1.2 steals, and 1.0 blocks per game as a junior, Heitschmidt earned second team allleague and honorable mention all-state honors.

“Some of my personal goals are to become a better leader and teammate overall,” Heitschmidt said. “I want to be the kind of player who can guarantee you a double-double every game and help our team get back to .500 and make a strong playoff run.”

While basketball remains a big part of his life, Heitschmidt has committed to Ottawa University to play baseball and study finance, with hopes of becoming a financial advisor after college.

“Ty is a hard-worker,” Schneider said. “He works to be the best he can be at everything he does. He’s constantly trying to better himself as well as his teammates. I enjoy working with Ty because he’s like a sponge in the way he absorbs information and uses it to become a stronger player.”

What truly makes Heitschmidt special, according to Schneider, is his attitude and team-first mentality.

“He’s a unique athlete who never ceases to amaze me in the way he continues to improve his game,” Schneider added. “He’s genuinely excited to see the success of others around him. Ty has worked hard to become a leader and does so by example more than anything else. I look forward to him having a great basketball season.”

SALINA AREA BOYS BASKETBALL POLL WINNER

Ellsworth’s Cooper McGowan

Ellsworth senior Cooper McGowan has built a reputation as one of the most versatile and complete athletes in the state. At 6’4”, McGowan is a do-it-all forward who thrives on both ends of the court.

McGowan’s strengths come from his defensive versatility, allowing him to guard nearly every position on the floor.

“I’ve played basketball my whole life,” McGowan said. “Defense has always been something I take pride in, and I just try to do whatever my team needs.”

Last season, McGowan averaged 10 points, 8.3 rebounds, 2.8 assists, 4.4 steals, and 2.1 blocks per game, earning first team all-league and honorable mention all-state honors. He also ranked Top 10 in steals and Top 20 in blocks across all Kansas classes.

While basketball is where he’s currently making noise, McGowan also plans to pursue football at the collegiate level. But for now, his focus is on leading Ellsworth to a league title and deep postseason run.

Head coach Jeff Landon says McGowan is the kind of athlete every program dreams of having.

“Athletically, Coop is skilled at a level that will give him

opportunities to play beyond high school,” Landon said. “He’s the type of kid every coach hopes for, the best player who’s also the hardest worker.”

But for Landon, McGowan’s character stands out even more than his athletic gifts.

“As a person, he’s even better,” Landon said. “He’s kind, polite, and represents his family, school, and community with maturity and integrity. Coop is well prepared for success in sports and life.”

Landon added that McGowan’s combination of humility and competitive fire makes him a truly unique player.

“At 6 ‘4”, he’ll run point guard for us, play forward or post, and guard the opponent’s best player — no matter the position. He’s a rare athlete with a rare mindset.”

2A TEAMS TO WATCH

BOYS

Sterling finished 23-3 last season and will be returning a lot of that firepower. The Black Bears bring back Boston Ekart, Blake Smith, Wyatt Newberry, Zane Farney and much more from their state championship team in 2025. They are the prohibitive favorite to repeat as state champions.

Returning four of their five starters from last season, as well as nine lettermen, Salina Sacred Heart will look to improve on their 20-1 season last year. Some key players returning are seniors Will Tuttle, Noah Hines and Luke Koland, as well as juniors Maddox Wells and Noah Hines. With a lot of playmakers this season, Sacred Heart hopes to get to the state tournanment.

Moundridge will return high scoring senior Heath Churchill, who scored 10 points per game and earned all-league honorable mention and all-state honorable mention as well. The Wildcats will also return a lot of guys competing for the other starting spots. Moundridge will also have the potential to be a very good defensive team due to their length and athleticism.

Finishing last season 22-4 and third at the 2A state championship, Ell-Saline will return three starters from last season. Those starters are Kas Kramer, who scored 10 points per game, Trey Williams, who scored 11 points and Reese Krone who scored 10 points per game. The Cardinals have the firepower to get back to the state tournament.

Solomon will return a core group of players and a large junior class. These returners are a group that has played a lot of basketball together, and that experience will be huge for the Gorillas. One standout returner is junior Calvin Mattison, who last season averaged 14 points and 10 rebounds. Solomon will also get junior Cameron Herring back who missed all of last season with an injury.

Coach Ferry says:

“I am new to the team this year. I have five seniors that work well together. We are an athletic team that I hope can make some noise in the league.”

GIRLS

Coming off an impressive 24-2 season last year is Moundridge. The 2A state champions lost no seniors over the offseason, so they return a veteran heavy roster ready to compete at a high level. The trio of Cammi Unruh, Macy Kaminkow, and Addysen Patrick will be leading the way just as they did last year, so leadership won’t be an issue. With a mix of seasoned leaders plus some talented underclassmen, Moundridge enters the season as the 2A favorite.

Inman had their strongest and most successful season in years going 21-4. Seniors Morgan Froese and Suttyn Harris were both all-league selections last year, as well as Taylor Froese and Ellie Thimmesch. Inman will have a tough schedule, and coming out on top of league play will be important. Inman looks prepared to compete at a high level and build on last season’s accomplishments.

One all-league selection will return for Bennington this season. Senior Jordan Bartlett will have help from senior Taleigh Watson to bring experience and skill to the floor. Keeping the momentum from last season’s successes will be crucial for this team. Bennington looks ready to challenge opponents and make another strong run this season.

Hillsboro, under coach Micah Ratzlaff, return all five starters from last year’s 14-8 squad.

Juniors Amyah Werth and Ella Potucek were both all-league athletes last year, and bring back a lot of talent to the court. With experience from all five returners, Hillsboro is ready to compete at a high level this season.

Led by coach Carl Hines, Salina Sacred Heart also returns all five starters from last year’s 10-10 team. Seniors Skylar Douglas, Nicole Richards, and Holly Bonilla lead the backcourt, while a good number of juniors and underclassmen help anywhere they are needed.

Coach Hines prides himself on their defense, one that will probably take Sacred Heart far this season.

Ell-Saline’s Trey Williams

Last year Trey Williams averaged 12 points per game along with six rebounds and is hoping to perform even better in hopes of playing collegiate ball.

Being a key player for Ell-Saline for the last three seasons, head coach Marty Wendel has high hopes for Williams senior year.

“He might be one of the best all-around basketball players I have had the opportunity to coach. Trey is extremely competitive on both ends of the floor. He can guard at all five positions if needed and is a walking bucket anytime we need one. Trey has a bright future in this game and I am excited to see what he can do for us his senior year and what he is able to achieve at the next level in the coming years,” Wendel said.

Williams, a small forward, has spent tons of time this offseason in the gym preparing for his senior year.

“I definitely want to improve on getting to the rim and being more explosive, and have better man up defense,” Williams said. “I’ve been in the gym working on ways to get to the rim.”

Williams is excited to play his senior year with the guys he has been playing with his whole life, and he has big goals for himself and the team.

“I would like to average 17 and 8 this year and hopefully make it back to state,” Williams said. “My motivation is realizing how much fun it was and I want to experience that again.”

56 EXPRESS TIRE & SERVICE ATHLETE SPOTLIGHT

Marion’s JamesonLooper

According to Marion’s Jameson Looper, one of the best attributes the Warriors possess is how they care for each other.

That is just one reason why they have had such a successful season.

“I am pleased with how we come together as a team and pick each other up when we make mistakes,” Looper said. As of press time, Marion was 5-2 and in a good spot heading into the postseason, which is what Looper is focused on.

“I feel good about the team and think we can make a really good run in the playoffs if we take it one week at a time we definitely have a good shot,” Looper said. “Something that is going really well is our offense and the way we can move the ball up and down the field.”

Looper is one of the top running backs in Class 1A and he had several goals he wanted to achieve in his senior season.

“Before the season started I had my eyes on a goal and that was to of course win but also break our schools rushing record in a single season, and I’m not too far off so that’s pretty exciting,” Looper said. “I think one thing me and the guys this season wanted to accomplish was being a key competitor in not only in our district but also in 1A.”

Solomon’s Calvin Mattison

Last year, the Solomon Gorillas finished 1110 and junior Calvin Mattison is looking to finish his first year as an upperclassman with a more successful season.

Mattison, a center for the Gorillas averaged 13.1 points, 9.2 rebounds and 2.7 blocks –all of which led the team. Now as a junior, Mattison hopes to build on that and become even more dominant for his team.

Looking into this upcoming season, Mattison is excited to get back on the court and grow with his teammates. He hopes the work he has put in in the offseason will help him with that.

“I have been getting shots up and taking workouts seriously,” Mattison said. “One thing that I want to improve on this season is my shooting ability.”

Mattison also has high hopes for this season and has some goals he wants to accomplish as well.

“I would like to get my first in-game dunk and a goal that I have for the team is we

make it further in the playoffs than we did last year,” Mattison said.

With hopes to go far in the postseason Mattison is trying to make sure he soaks up every movement with his teammates.

“My motivation for this season is wanting to be there with the team every day of the week,” Mattison said.

GO

PREP PERFORMANCE OF THE MONTH

Looking for the chance to win back-to-back state titles, Sterling senior Blake Smith hopes all the work he has put in will help him and his team do just that.

“Not a lot of people even get the chance to win one so the chance to win back-to-back years is awesome. And then just getting to play basketball with all of my best friends is super fun and I’m looking forward to it as well,” Blake Smith said.

Last year Sterling won the 2A state championship 58-45 over Moundridge. Smith mostly plays small forward for the Bears but moves around and was a big part of Sterling’s success.

This year Smith is looking to be a more consistent presence for the Bears.

“I went through a stretch in the middle of last year where I wasn’t as good as I should’ve been and so being more consistent throughout the entire year would be huge,” Smith said. “ I’ve tried to set very specific goals in my workouts and accomplish very specific things so I think staying true to the plan is something that has helped me with that.”

Sterling head coach Derek Schneider has complete faith in his senior leader.

“Blake is a great player with a high basketball IQ and a very strong skill set. He can score from all spots on the floor and has smooth, fluid motions finishing around the rim. Off the court Blake is a great kid. He is a person of integrity and can be counted on to represent our team and school well,” Schneider said.

Salina Sacred Heart’s Will Tuttle

Chasing the hope to make it back to state, senior Will Tuttle is excited for his senior year of basketball.

During Tuttle’s sophomore year, he and the Knights made it to the state tournament, now entering his senior year, Tuttle hopes he has done enough work this offseason to get Salina Sacred Heart there, despite a mild injury.

“During the offseason I was recovering from an ankle injury but was able to be back for MAYB nationals in August. I have played with the same off season team since we were in Kindergarten. In addition to MAYB, I also independently work on my skills,” Tuttle said.

Tuttle is the primary scorer for the Knights as well as a skilled shooter, but he still wants to grow as a player.

“An area I want to improve this year is my ball handling. I worked on the in the offseason by dribbling all the time while I was out with my injury. My main goal for this season is to win state,” Tuttle said.

Last year Tuttle averaged 20.6 points per game, 6.7 rebounds per game and 1.5 steals per game. He also earned MVP of the Chapman Tournament, first team all-league and first team all-state.

Despite Tuttle’s accolades, his team still fell short last season.

“Last year we lost in the second game of substate and I was really disappointed. We are returning essentially the same team as last year and I hope our experience and teamwork leads to a deeper run in the state tournament this year,” Tuttle said.

Bennington’s Isaiah Garrett

Bennington senior Isaiah Garrett has big plans for this season for him and the Bulldogs, and hopes that the work he has put in this offseason will help him accomplish them all.

“I played a lot of summer ball like AAU and some with my school team and I attended a few camps.,” Garrett said. “One area I wanted to be better in is my shooting. I feel like if I can be a knock down shooter then we’ll prosper as a team.”

Head coach Curtis Pickering is excited for Garrett’s senior year for the Bulldogs.

“Isaiah is one of those players that coaches dream about. He’s such a polite, kind hearted, smart, driven, and hard working young man. His love for the game of basketball is off the charts and he’s as coach able of a player that I’ve ever had,” Pickering said.

After graduating four starters last year, Bennington will need someone to step up, and Garrett believes it’s him.

“I’m the main guy on my team,” Garrett said.

Garrett last year averaged 13 points per game, seven rebounds and three assists, earning him first team all-league and first team all-state.

Last year Bennington lost in the substate championship, after they blew a significant lead. That is one of the things that keeps Garret motivated and fuels his goals for himself and his team this season.

“I hope to reach 1,000 points. It’s a long shot but not impossible. For our team is to make it to the substate championship to redeem ourselves,” Garrett said.

LUDWIG FAMILY CHIROPRACTIC’S ATHLETE SPOTLIGHT

Minneapolis’ Tegan Link

After a strong season in 2024-2025, Tegan Link of Minneapolis is prepared to take his game to the next level this season.

“Coming off a solid season from last year, I’m getting in better shape and working on my jump shot to expand my range,” Link said.

While individual stats are important, Link’s main focus is on improving the team’s performance, especially after the regular season.

“I’m wanting to have at least 15 to 20 points per game, but I’m more focused on getting my team more involved and more focused on games in the postseason,” Link said.

With work, training, and conditioning

outside of the winter season, Link is ready to see how he and the Lions have grown over time.

“I’m excited to see how much progress I can make from my sophomore year to this year, and I’m excited to see where this season takes us,” Link said.

A tough home opener will be one everyone is watching, and Link is prepared to do whatever it takes to take the win.

“I’m very excited to play Ellsworth, who is our game opener,” Link said. “It’ll be a tough game, but I think we can pull the win out.”

Salina Sacred Heart’s Coach Brian Gormley

Finishing last season with a record of 20-1 and becoming league champs with a record of 9-0, Salina Sacred Heart hopes to have another successful season.

The Knights return two players who received allstate recognition last year, Will Tuttle who earned second team 2A and Maddox Wells who earned honorable mention 2A; both were also first-team all-NCAA selections. Noah Hines was also a firstteam All-NCAA selection. Dom Matteucci was an honorable mention NCAA league selection last season

Returning a good amount of talent this season, head coach Brian Gormley hopes his coaching style will help the Knights achieve another winning season.

“I want to fit what we do to the strengths of our players. This season, we have a lot of playmakers, so we want to create opportunities for them to attack the opposing defense. Defensively, we will play primarily man-to-man with varying

pressures,” Gormley said.

Even though last season the Knights went 9-0 in league play, Gormley is preparing them to face a more competitive league this season.

“With the amount of returning experience we have; we should be a solid team. The biggest adversity will be the number of quality opponents we will face, and our league is even more competitive this season,” Gormley said.

For any type of sports or age-related orthopedic condition, count on Salina Regional Orthopedic and Sports Medicine for the region’s most innovative, comprehensive, and compassionate care. “Our job is to help improve quality of life,” says orthopedic surgeon Travis Rump, D.O. “We do everything we can to help people get back to the things they enjoy.”

Minneapolis’ Baylee Randall-Hurt

Baylee Randall-Hurt of Minneapolis is back for the Lions this season. Working on both her mental physical game, Randall-Hurt is eager for the road ahead.

“I’m preparing for the upcoming season by working on both my inside and outside game, as well as improving my speed and stamina,” Randall-Hurt said. “One of my weaknesses is my mental game. I’m a big team player and always try to lift up my teammates, even when I’m not performing my best.”

A long season ahead gives Randall-Hurt plenty of time to practice. While she hopes to better herself, she’s also ready to help take her team into some postseason play.

“I have many goals for this season, including earning an all-league honorable mention, helping my team make it to state, and increasing my stats compared to last year,” Randall-Hurt said. “My biggest focus is improving my speed and stamina.”

Some big competition is keeping RandallHurt excited and pumped up for the season, as well as getting to take on the leadership

role.

“I can’t wait to face multiple teams in our league and hopefully come out on top, winning the league title—especially since we’ve lost to Beloit several times in past years,” Randall-Hurt said. “I know it will be tough without some of last year’s seniors who made basketball so much fun, but I’m ready to step up.”

Minneapolis’ Tanner Norris

There is a special bond on the Minneapolis boys basketball team and that is one of the main reasons senior Tanner Norris is excited for the season to start.

“These friends have been supporting me every day, through thick and thin,” Norris said. “I would not be playing basketball without them.”

Norris has been grinding throughout the offseason. Once he finished working at his job, it was time for hoops.

“During the football season when all of my friends played, I would work at my job from the time school ended to around 6-6:30,” Norris said. “After work, it was the time I would begin to go to the local basketball courts and start training till it got so dark at night that I could not see the ball or the hoop. During rainy days, the outside courts would be wet, which would limit my basketball aspect, so I would then work on myself through weightlifting.”

Being a better ballhandler was one of the main fundamentals Norris focused on during his offseason training.

“This year, I feel as if I have worked immensely on dribbling the basketball so we can limit turnovers for the team,” Norris said. “At the courts, I would either use items found on the ground or items I brought from home to use as cones to dribble around, thereby improving my ball handling.”

Success is important for Norris, but making the season a memorable one with his friends is the most important.

“I believe that the Minneapolis High School Basketball team shares a similar goal: not only to win games, but also to have fun playing and being a cohesive team,” Norris said.

Inman’s Morgan Froese

Between sports seasons, you can always find Inman’s Morgan Froese putting in the work to be at her strongest on the court.

“In the offseason between sports I always push harder in the gym to be as strong as I can for when the season starts,” Froese said. “This will help me improve how strong I am in the paint.”

Having experienced the atmosphere of state last year, Froese and her teammates are hungry to go even further.

“I am very excited for this season and expect all of the girls to respond well,” Froese said. “We got that taste of state last year and are hungry to get that back. I like to push myself past limits I think I’m capable of. I really think that has given me the drive and discipline I have. I hope to improve across the board.”

Little River’s Havana Olander

Last year senior guard Havana Olander averaged 10.2 points per game as well as four rebounds which earned her first team all-league and second team all-state.

Little River’s finish last year is Olander’s and her team’s main motivation for this season.

“We have gotten second and fallen short the last two years. For five of us, it is our last chance to take home a championship and finish the season on a high note. We try not to dwell on our losses, but use them as motivation for the season to come,” Olander said.

With lots of potential and team chemistry,

Froese is eager for the times she’ll share with her teammates and coaches.

“I’m most excited about the chemistry we’ll have as a team,” Froese said. “The girls are so fun to be around and so are the coaches. Coach Harris and Coach Eddy treat us like their kids, which makes the team feel like a family.”

Froese hopes to continue her volleyball career after high school, as well as further her education journey.

“My plans after high school are to go and play collegiate volleyball,” Froese said. “Career wise I am still not 100 percent set, but as of right now I am planning to study Sports Marketing.”

Olander believes her and the Redskins have a good chance for another deep playoff run.

“We are returning almost everyone from last year and are gaining some very talented freshmen. We are all very blessed to have each other and everyone gets along really well,” Olander said. “Our main team goal is to win state.”

This off-season Olander spent a lot of time with her teammates focusing on getting better and building the chemistry between her and her teammates.

“During the summer, we had basketball skills along with games during the week in June. We also played in a few tournaments, and this gave us the chance to play some very talented teams. I think one of the biggest training components is our weights program. We lifted three days a week during the summer, and five days a week now that school has started. This has helped me become stronger and faster for the season,” Olander said.

1A TEAMS TO WATCH

BOYS

Finishing the season last year at 15-8, Little River looks to build on last year’s success and with the return of a lot of experience, the Redskins look to continue to grow and compete for a state tournament appearance. The Redskins return two seniors in Jaxson Konen and Ty Janette.

Returning a good core of players including last year’s top scorers, including Edward Hornicek, Beloit St. John’s will be a senior heavy team this season. That experience will be one thing that helps them later in the season. Beloit St. John’s will have a team that is prepared for a deep state run this season. Peabody-Burns is going to be led this season by junior Jameson Miles, who has been honorable mention all-state the last two years. He also averaged 18 points per game as well as nine rebounds. Peabody-Burns also returns four starters and will have two starters and five juniors who all played significant minutes last year at the varsity level.

Canton-Galva’s Trinity Espinoza

Heading into her senior season, Trinity

Espinoza has already surpassed the 1,000 point mark. Last year she scored 275 points and also had more than 50 steals to go along with that.

Espinoza’s goal for the year is to continue her upward trend and help her team make a deep playoff run.

Espinoza plays point guard for CantonGalva and is hoping to finish her senior season with a winning record. Last year the Eagles finished .500 and Espinoza has a drive to end her senior season better than that.

This offseason, Espinoza has put in the work to improve.

“I take a weights class during school so I’m always working out every day. I usually get into the YMCA to get some shots up and continue working on my game,” Espinoza said. “An area I’m wanting to improve on this year is my shooting.”

As a senior Espinoza’s main role is to be a leader and to lead her team by example and by the way she communicates.

“Some goals I have for the season is to make a run to state and have a connection between my teammates. A few personal goals I have are stepping up and continuing to be a leader on the court and also step it up defensively,” Espinoza said.

Canton-Galva’s Faith McGinnis

Canton-Galva’s Faith McGinnis has long viewed the rodeo, agriculture and FFA has passions. But recently she made her passion a competition.

“There are some similarities between those competitions (cross country, basketball and track and field) and rodeo and FFA competitions,” McMannis said. “They all take hard work and dedication to be successful. I like that some of the skills I learn in FFA and rodeo will be things I can continue to use throughout my life.”

McGinnis started in the FFA chapter at Canton-Galva in eighth grade, but she was involved in agriculture even before that.

“I was involved with agriculture before that as part of the Miss United States Agriculture Pageant Program,” McGinnis said.

Just recently, McGinnis received an accolade that she considers to be one of her finest moments in agriculture.

“A recent highlight for me was getting to ride around the arena at the Dodge City Days Rodeo and be introduced as the 2026 Miss Teen Rodeo Kansas,” McMannis said. “I also started breakaway roping this past summer on my horse Peso and entered some amateur rodeos in the Central Plains Rodeo Association.”

When she is riding a horse, McMannis find its therapeutic.

“It lets me forget about other things that stress me out, and I can just relax and enjoy the ride,” McMannis said.

Elyria Christian Boys Basketball

The motto for the Elyria Christian boys basketball team this year is “discipline in the details,” which head coach Zach Goodrich explains as learning how to do every little thing well as a unit.

Goodrich has coached at Elyria for 15 years and has hopes that this season’s tough schedule will prepare his team for more success in the offseason.

“We have a tendency to improve throughout the year, so I expect us to face some early challenges from a tough schedule and have an opportunity to evaluate our growth come January during tournament week,” Goodrich said.

Goodrich got into coaching due to the coaches he had and he hopes to inspire his kids the same way.

“The discipline required to be successful was a major part of my own development, and I want to share that with the young people I am privileged to coach,” Goodrich said.

Elyria is going to be young but will have two juniors; Nathan Romero

and Grayson Brodaus, step into leadership roles.

“The sub-varsity group has logged many minutes together, so there will be a strong sense of familiarity, which will be helpful as we continue to improve throughout the early part of the season,” Goodrich said.

Goodrich hopes that his unique coaching style will bring success to Elyria Christian again this season.

“I enjoy a disciplined approach and teaching players how to read the game, playing free-flowing offensively while developing a sound, fundamentally strong defense as a unit,” Goodrich said.

McPherson’s Andi Buschbom

Andi Buschbom knew finding the right place to intern for her interest in physical therapy was important for her future.

Luckily, she didn’t have to look too far. “I had heard so many positive comments about Advanced Physical Therapy and with my interest in going into physical therapy I thought this would be the perfect place to intern at,” Buschbom said.

Right now it’s more about learning by observation for Buschbom, as well as helping out the clinic as much as she can. But she knows the experience will be invaluable once she is in college and

beyond.

“I really do love interning at APT,” Buschbom said. The atmosphere is very positive and happy and all the therapists are super kind. Being there reminds me of how much I can help others and gets me excited about the future.”

Buschbom believes Advanced Physical Therapy is the best option for anyone needing to rehabilitate their injuries.

“I would say, get your therapy done with APT,” Buschbom said. “I have seen a lot of improvement with the patients, they really know what they are talking about. They work hard to help others get back to full strength.”

Drew Chrisman, PT, DPT

Favorite sport: Track and Field

Favorite activity/exercise to get in easy movement: Commuting to work on my bike has been a great way to get the blood flowing, get some easy cardio, and provide an opportunity to mentally transfer from home to work and vice versa.

Sports (if any) you played in high school: MidDistance Track, Cross Country

What you treat/specialize in: I treat general orthopedics, but I love working with high school athletes struggling with knee pain. I had the same struggle and never visited a PT, so athletes succeeding here means a lot to me.

Best tip for high school athletes: Strive for great posture and always stretch your calves.

Fort Hays State

The Fort Hays State athletic program used Hellas Construction for its remodeling of its football stadium.

“Hellas removed our existing track at Lewis Field and put down a new Helix Matrix playing surface and covered the remaining asphalt from the track with a Real Turf product,” said Matt Cook of Fort Hays State athletics.

Cook was impressed with every aspect of Hellas during the construction process.

“Hellas has always been great to work with from start to finish on every product,” Cook said. “Their product is top-notch and their customer service is fantastic.”

From start to finish, Hellas worked with Fort Hays State to make sure the facility was as good as possible.

“It was a very easy process,” Cook said. “Alonso and his crew took the plans and turned it into a reality.

They were very easy to work with and even changed a few things on the fly to make the field look better.”

If another university or organization was interested in renovating their facilities, Cook said Hellas is the top choice.

“I would highly recommend anybody looking at facility upgrades to reach out and talk with Hellas based on our experience with them,” Cook said. “Great products and great people who can handle any size of project.”

HELLAS BUILDS FOR SPORTS FROM START TO FINISH

Hellas provides a complete scope

Hutchinson Community College basketball player Kaia Smith sees both athletic and academic advantages from being a Blue Dragon.

“I wanted to go somewhere where I knew I would be pushed to work harder than everyone around me,” said Smith, about Hutch CC’s athletic department. “From an academic standpoint, I really enjoy how engaging the classes are. The people around are supportive and the community is very diverse. I knew I would enjoy taking classes here because I took some college classes through HCC while I was in high school and enjoyed them then. The teachers are also more than just teachers, they care about you as a person, ask you how you’re doing, and how sports are going for you.”

Smith said one of the best parts of being a part of a team is how unique individuals can

come together to become a team.

“We are all very different people, but our love of basketball has quickly strengthened our relationships on and off the court,” Smith said. “We spend almost all of our time together, so I’m looking forward to many more good memories with them.”

If a student was interested in going to Hutchinson Community College, either for academics or athletics, Smith said those individuals should be ready to work.

“No one is handed anything here,” Smith said. “Everything is worked for and obtained by the driving force to win and better the people around you. I would tell them that there are many opportunities to learn new skills and meet some amazingly nice people here.”
