Beyond Boundaries: My Adventurous Journey in Canada

Icebe Tsang (FS2023/24, Lingnan University)

To Icebe, stepping outside her comfort zone might receive some unexpected and rewarding outcomes Through participating in the exchange programme, She embarked on the exchange journey to Canada. This experience was a novelty to her: This was her first time travelling to a western country, her first time flying alone, and her very first time of staying abroad for such a long period

She embraced the beauty of cultural diversity by engaging with locals and trying new cuisines that were rare to her in Hong Kong. It fostered her a deeper understanding of different cultures by trying something new

As English is the first language in Canada, it is lucky that there were nearly no language barriers for Icebe to communicate with the locals. She gained the opportunity to practice English and attained a more proficient level Icebe’s housemates were from the UK and Spain, she was happy to learn slang and vocabularies in other languages from them

In the academic aspect, the western learning style in Canada kept pushing her to be more proactive in studies She was now more confident to speak in class and willing to express opinions in discussions!

Canada is famous for its breathtaking natural beauty. Living in such a rural area was a fresh experience for her There was an arboretum right near her dorm, which was her favorite place to go in leisure time In the arboretum, sne enjoy exploring themed gardens and nature trails while immersing in the tranquility of nature. It was a perfect place to seek a peaceful retreat for the busy lifestyle It is nice to know that Icebe got such delightful and valuable moments ;)

Blossoming in Life - Living Life to the Fullest!

Tracy Lam, one of our fung scholars, believes that ‘every moment deserves to be captured’. Her adventurous soul has always been calling her – she should GET TO LIVE! We never know when our death, and our fate…Don't feel regret. As a responsible student tutor, she left positive traces in the world and wanted to inspire people around her. She considers herself a “blessed child” as life has never been too harsh for her, blissfully She has some living tips to share:

1 To-do list: Wake up WITH PURPOSE Give genuine CARE to the family as they are the important people in our life.

2 Guided affirmation practice: Listen to words of LOVE It fuels us and you would instantly feel energized to handle every challenge

3 Pomodoro clock: A great tool for every student and worker For every 25 minutes of deep focus, giving ourselves a BREAK.

Tracy's life goal is to keep enjoying the fun of life while marching on the main path of life Let us just take the flowers life offers us, smell it, appreciate it and take in the moment. A Finance Student’s Unexpected Venture: Discovering Art Through Lectures and Travelling Alike

Thomas Heun (FS2023/24, Hong Kong University of Science and Technology)

Thomas Heun from HKUST just ended his wonderful exchange journey, expressing that things come as “pleasant surprises”. It was an eye-opening and reflective experience Failing to get enrolled in business courses that he originally planned to take, with very limited choices at his disposal, he tried something new and opted for a course about Modern Art He suffered from lots of worries and insecurities as he knew nothing about the subject matter

However, his worries quickly dissipated as everyone was exceptionally welcoming and assisted him. He was grateful that he could kickstart his artistic voyage on his exchange journey! Trying something different in exchange, as a student majoring in business-related, he recalled the exhilarating experience of dashing around an art museum looking for a painting to analyze and share interpretations. Instead of studying global business and finance, who always thinks too analytically, he now set aside these essential qualities In arts, 2+2>4!

Apart from the academic fresh try, traveling is a quintessential part of the exchange experience. To him, visiting art museums has become a much more enjoyable experience after learning about the styles and stories behind different artists Be it Vincent Van Gogh’s sunflowers in Amsterdam or Monet’s water lilies in London - they have all left him starstruck and in awe He had never imagined that he would be immersed in such an artistic learning experience He expressed his greatest gratitude to the Victor and William Fung Foundation, who made this wonderful journey possible. We are very glad to know that he discovered a new area of interest!

Toby Evans (FS2022/23, University of Oxford)

Not only gaining fruitful experience from exchanges. With the support of the Fung Foundation, Toby Evan joined an internship in China He undertook an internship at HUST, Wuhan, working on an AI-focused research project. He was in a research group, working on an artificial olfactory system at Huazhong University of Science and Technology He was responsible for the data analysis using machine learning He worked on classification and regression. Amongst a variety of models including some simple forest and boost algorithms, the final models that he selected – based upon success a CNN for classification and an LSTM and RNN combination for regression. Toby developed skills in multiple machine learning techniques and learned feature selection, dimensionality reduction and the use of attention layers. This was

rewarding and useful to him He would like to pursue a machine learning path in his further studies and career

Besides, Toby participated in many fun events from dragon dancing to handcrafting traditional food, trying crayfish(xiaolongxia), and immersing the culture in Wuhan. HUST was a very enjoyable place to stay He was enormously grateful to the Fung Internship Award for enabling him to undertake this educationally and culturally enriching trip.

Memories Forged in Canada

Jeremiah Khong & Yi Da Ngo (FS2023/24, Singapore Management University)

The next sharing is a combined experience of two outstanding male scholars, Yi Da and Jeremiah They both pursued their studies in Singapore Management University(SMU) in the finance and business accounting field in Canada. They participated in an overseas exchange program in Canada’s prestigious Business Programme at Queen’s University The university is renowned for its commitment to excellence in business education, and the school is ranked among the TOP BUSINESS SCHOOLS globally They were embraced by an inclusive and diverse community, denoted by an open-minded and team-based learning environment.

Their fondest memory came from a Corporate Financial Planning(COMM 323) module, which was the most challenging module in the business school. Nonetheless, by seeking clarification of their doubts with Professor Cannon and his seasoned guidance, they steadily gained confidence and mastery over the material By the semester's end, they emerged as the top-scoring team for their final 2 hand-in group case study This transformative experience underscored the invaluable adaptability in shaping academic success. Fung scholars, good job!

In Canada, from braving ice-cold dips in sub-zero lakes to exploring a drive-through zoo in Quebec, each adventure was both novel and exhilarating. Apart from exploring Kingston, they travelled to Niagara, Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal, Calgary and Banff Both of our scholars experienced a whirlwind of emotions, ranging from euphoria to apprehension, culminating in the ultimate triumph of accomplishment We are happy to know about their academic endeavors and how fulfilling

"Oh, Canada! Exchange Adventure"

Ryan Tan Jun Yuan (FS2023/24, National University of Singapore)

Ryan Tan had an amazing opportunity to develop a fun-filled and meaningful journey in Canada He joined a 4-month exchange programme at Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario, Canada The key strengths that struck him about their Commerce School were the vibrant community and rigorous academic environment that supported intellectual curiosity and critical thinking To Ryan, it is interesting to explore the world of financial markets in the Canadian context He explored the Ontario province and unique landmarks in Brockville,

Belleville, Gananoque, and Prince Edward Island. He went to attractions that offered a rich tapestry of culture, history, and natural beauty These destinations offered a unique perspective of Canadian lifestyle and culture, leaving a memorable and delightful impression on him

The awe-inspiring natural beauty of Niagara Falls, with millions of liters of water plunging down the cliffs every minute, was a majestic sight to behold He was indeed fortunate that the scholarship sponsor from the foundation gave him the financial support to explore new experiences He did believe that his time in Canada would leave a lasting memory on him forever.

My Journey to Explore the Medieval City—Edinburgh

Odo Tse (FS2023/24, The University of Hong Kong)

The medieval city of Edinburgh

Tse Sheung Hei Odo chose the University of Edinburgh for his one-semester exchange. He saw it as an UNFORGETTABLE CHAPTER in his life, filled with countless adventures

Edinburgh is the capital of Scotland Cold, rainy, windy. In the city center triumphs the Edinburgh Castle, a medieval castle surrounded by high walls that he likes. Odo is a passionate cyclist, who joined the cycling club to explore Edinburgh on two wheels He enjoyed good food. He likes red pudding and haggis, which are two traditional cuisines in Scotland. Yet it is up to readers to decide if they are tasty or not, haha Fish and chips are prevalent along the Scottish coast However, they can be bland and oily if they are not seasoned properly

Last, a fun fact: the transportation in Scotland The Young Scot Card is an absolute bargain Application is free and then you no longer need to pay for buses!

Buses in Scotland may not be the quickest medium from one point to another, but they are free if you have a Young Scot Card
