FOUNDATION UPDATES

Mentoring for Future Leaders | Ready to Embark on a New Learning Journey In March 2023, the Victor and William Fung Foundation launched a captivating mentoring initiative known as “The Fung Scholars X PMD Mentoring Program.” This program is designed to cultivate personal and professional development for individuals participating in both the Fung Scholars Program and the Program for Management Development (PMD) of the Fung Group. The official launch of this innovative program took place on April 24 through a Kick-off Ceremony and a Mixer Event, signifying the start of an exciting journey of growth and learning.

At the Mixer Event, which took place at Explorium, mentors and mentees actively interacted on an individual level, promoting genuine conversations and creating opportunities for valuable learning collaborations.

Dr. Victor K. Fung, the Fung Group’s Group Chairman, delivered a welcome speech that emphasised the program’s objective of establishing a platform for mentors and mentees to exchange valuable experiences, leading to a mutually advantageous mentoring relationship.

We are eagerly anticipating the constructive influence of the Mentoring Program and wholeheartedly wish all participants the best as they embark on this new learning journey!

Singapore Chapter: Hi MIT Fung Scholars!

This summer, with the generous support of the Fung Foundation, I had the incredible opportunity to conduct sociolinguistics research at the National University of Singapore. My study focused on utilizing eyetracking technology to discern how social information influences listeners’ perceptions of Singaporean Mandarin features. By providing various social cues to the listeners, we aimed to understand which cues led them to expect a local “accent” in Chinese. This research experience held tremendous significance for me, as it allowed me to apply the Chinese language skills I had cultivated since high school in a real-world context.

During my time in Singapore, I connected with fellow MIT interns and engaged in meaningful conversations over dinner with Fung Scholars from Singapore. It was remarkable to hear about their diverse journeys, with experiences spanning different countries, such as from South Korea to the United States, and the stages of their careers. These interactions enriched my understanding of the Fung Scholars program’s core mission to foster global understanding and cultural exchange. The experiences provided by the Fung Foundation have truly broadened my horizon and strengthened my commitment to explore societies beyond the United States, particularly in relation to potent economic issues, which were a central focus of the conference I attended this fall.

The leadership conference held in Hong Kong this fall presented another remarkable occasion to establish connections with other Fung Scholars, both new acquaintances and familiar faces. It was particularly delightful to reunite with Jamie, whom I had previously met in Singapore, as they served as the MC for the session where I presented my research. Our engaging discussion revolved around the intersection of technology and the humanities, delving into the intriguing ways in which unconscious social biases can shape human interactions. This topic resonated with the presentations of many other scholars in the Humanities session, fostering a vibrant exchange of ideas. All in all, the collective experience of meeting other Fung Scholars in Singapore and Hong Kong has proven to be immensely valuable, enriching my journey as a scholar.

FS Ho’s Orchard Volunteer Experience

The 𝐅𝐒 𝐕𝐨𝐥𝐮𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐞𝐫 𝐄𝐱𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞 at 𝐇𝐨’𝐬 𝐎𝐫𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐝, which took place in July, was a remarkable event. The team devoted their time and energy to supporting this local farm, renowned for its cultivation of organic pineapples, longans, and wampi.

Ying (FS2014/15, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University took the lead in organizing the activity. Located in Mui Wo, the orchard provided a unique backdrop for the volunteer work, coinciding with the day before the Major Heat, which signifies the onset of the hottest season according to the Chinese Solar Calendar.

The team was divided into two groups at the orchard. The boys' team exerted great effort in harvesting longans from tall trees, while the girls' team carefully removed the stems and gathered the fruits. Their hard work and effective teamwork resulted in an impressive harvest of approximately 70 kg of longans - a truly fruitful accomplishment!

This volunteering endeavour not only extended assistance to local farmers and made a valuable contribution to the community but also provided the Fung Scholars with an opportunity to comprehend the significance of agriculture and develop a deep appreciation for the arduous labour invested by farmers. Their unwavering dedication to effecting positive change in society is genuinely inspiring and serves as a role model for others to emulate!

The Fung Scholars who participated in the VR Event showcased their exceptional abilities by completing the challenging missions in an immersive escape-room team-building activity known as VR Project: Holmes.

These intense situations serve as a testament to the sharp thinking and adeptness of our Fung Scholars as they tackled intricate problems and made critical decisions.

During this captivating VR Event, participants were tasked with disarming a bomb and solving a cold case.

The atmosphere was charged with urgency as they were pushed to their cognitive limits, striving to save themselves and others. Initially, none of the teams managed to complete the task in the first round.

However, with the assistance of coaching and guidance, all teams enhanced their communication and problem-solving abilities. Ultimately, a team of four Fung Scholars secured the win by successfully escaping the imminent explosion.

We extend our heartfelt appreciation to ROCK Training Consultants Limited for developing this remarkable VR team-building activity. Not only did it provide an exhilarating experience, but it also imparted valuable insights regarding self-awareness and understanding others to all the participants. p4

In June 2023, the first Welcome Gathering for the 2023/24 academic year was held, with the participation of more than 50 new Fung Scholars from the University of Hong Kong (HKU), Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU), and Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST). To facilitate the event, 12 Fung Scholars alumni kindly volunteered as group facilitators, sharing their experiences within the Fung Scholars Network.

During the event, Mr Kai-Man Wong, Director of the Victor and William Fung Foundation, delivered a welcoming speech, emphasizing the significance of the Fung Scholars community as a valuable social and professional network that fosters lifelong friendships among the Fung Scholars.

In August, the second Welcome Gathering took place, where the participants enthusiastically engaged in conversations with their fellow Fung Scholars and thoroughly enjoyed the ice-breaker activity.

We express our sincere gratitude to Herman Tsui (FS2018/19, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University) for volunteering as our photographer and skillfully capturing those priceless moments of interaction.

FUNG SCHOLARS LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE 2023 The Fung Scholars Leadership Conference 2023 was successfully conducted on October 7, 2023, at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST). A gathering of over 100 Fung scholars, Fung Fellows, and visionaries from diverse regions came together to delve into two significant themes: AI-ChatGPT and its applications, and International Trade after COVID-19.

Prof. Nancy Ip, President and Morningside Professor of Life Science at HKUST, inaugurated the conference, while Dr. William K. Fung, Deputy Chairman of the Fung Group, delivered a speech emphasizing the importance of staying abreast of new developments and trends in the global landscape. He encouraged Fung Scholars and Fung Fellows to leverage the Fung Scholars Network fully to equip themselves for future success.

The Conference’s keynote speech was delivered by Prof. Harry Shum, Chairman of the HKUST Council, followed by a panel discussion moderated by Yifei Jefferson Chen (FS2018/19, University of Oxford).

During the discussion, Dr. Victor K. Fung, Chairman of the Fung Group, and Prof. Shum put forward new perspectives on how AIChatGPT can revolutionize businesses and enterprises.

Experiencing a distinct and moderate lifestyle in Wellington, New Zealand

by Chan Sze Wun, Kelly (FS2022/23, The Education University of Hong Kong) Going on an exchange is featured as a treasurable and highly anticipated experience on my university bucket list. Studying and living overseas provide the perfect opportunity to challenge oneself and expand one’s worldview.

Travelling to Wellington was the first time I ever immersed myself in a non-Chinese society, encountering a fresh glimpse into a distinct culture and lifestyle. I am earnestly grateful to have been granted the Fung Scholarship from the Foundation in great honour, which offered me a chance to explore New Zealand and study at the Victoria University of Wellington.

During my time there, I enjoyed engaging in courses on ethnography, analytical linguistics across genres and media, as well as education courses covering topics like educational ethics and issues, classroom management strategies, and Māori culture in the Kiwi context. These precious

experiences

encouraged

me

to

exchange thoughts and ideas with the locals, and actively participate in and contribute to the diverse community, including my host family, the neighbourhoods,

When I think back to my first impression of Wellington, the gorgeous scenery that amplifies the beauty of nature immediately comes to mind.

Apart from the extraordinary views, the most unforgettable aspect of my exchange journey is the friendship and kinship I developed with my host family. The homestay culture, where students live with local families, is a unique feature of overseas study exchange experiences, especially for university students. Typically, pupils opt for school dormitories or shared housing with other exchange students. However, in New Zealand, the opportunity to live with host families allows students to directly immerse themselves in the local culture from a different perspective, not limited to interactions with peers of the same generation. I am so grateful and touched that I could be involved in my host family, receiving an abundance of love and care throughout the homestay experience. It was truly unexpected to develop a sense of belonging within my host family and maintain a close relationship with them, akin to that of relatives. I fondly recall how my host mother always reassured me whenever I felt homesick or anxious about my future. I never imagined that I could have another home located nearly 9500 kilometers away from Hong Kong until I met my host family. Regardless of the scale, I cherished every moment we shared, created, and experienced together during those ten weeks.

One particularly memorable moment during my homestay journey was when I received my first-ever bouquet on my birthday. To my delight, I also woke up to the great surprise of a birthday cake waiting for me in the morning as I walked out of my bedroom. It was a heartwarming experience. Throughout my time with my host family, we shared our hobbies and discovered our mutual love for coffee and sports. Whether it was exploring unique restaurants, visiting various coffee shops, baking and cooking together in the kitchen, strolling along the seaside, or enjoying sitcoms and TV series while engaging in laughter-filled conversations, these moments replay in my mind like cherished flashbacks. Additionally, I was to be coincident in Wellington during the FIFA Women’s World Cup, allowing us to watch the matches together at night and cheer for our favourite teams. This experience ignited a strong passion for sports and football in Wellington, and it was incredibly enjoyable to share the excitement with the entire city.

In my view, New Zealanders are warm, friendly, down-to-earth, and welcoming in general. They consistently perform their ardent love for life. Every moment I experienced in Wellington was

remarkable and different from my previous life in Hong Kong, which is a hectic and fastpaced city. Embracing a distinct yet balanced lifestyle during my time there broadened my horizons and transformed me into a more introspective individual, appreciating and celebrating every small, love-filled moment in life.

It proved to be a transformative journey that expanded my intellectual horizons, fostered personal growth, and provided a vibrant and enriching educational experience. VUW, renowned for its academic excellence and commitment to innovation, offered diverse opportunities for intellectual exploration and holistic development. Throughout the programme, I engaged in diverse courses like genre, ethnography, and education, which broadened my understanding of the educational landscape. Additionally, I had the valuable opportunity to participate in a two-week field experience at an intermediate school, further enhancing my practical teaching skills. Thus, this incredible journey has better prepared and equipped me for my future role as a teacher.

Immersing myself in this vibrant and diverse community allowed me to appreciate the traditional Māori culture and traditions. I attended field trips to enhance my understanding of Wellington's rich heritage and history. The mesmerizing natural scenery also allowed me to develop a deeper appreciation for Mother Nature. Other than that, I had the opportunity to visit one of the shooting locations of The Lord of the Rings, located in Kaitoke Regional Park. Moreover, I stayed with a host family for ten weeks, enabling me to engage in a meaningful cultural exchange with New Zealand citizens and immerse myself in their living environment. One interesting aspect of this experience was observing the different eating habits, as New Zealanders often preferred sandwiches, fruits, or pre-cooked food for lunch, which contrasted with the practices in Hong Kong. Thus, it was interesting to embrace a new way of living.

Beyond academic pursuits, the programme nurtured my personal growth, fostered resilience, and developed essential life skills. For instance, I had more time to reflect and digest the lesson content, and the slower pace of life allowed me to appreciate various aspects of society. Thus, the immersion experience undoubtedly shaped my future endeavours and contributed to my success as a lifelong learner and global citizen. I am immensely grateful for the opportunity to be a part of VUW and will always cherish the memories.

Valuable field experience The two-week field experience at an intermediate school enabled me to broaden my horizons on how the education system works in New Zealand. I learned that teachers would adapt diverse learning pedagogies to motivate students' learning and foster a learning environment of freedom and innovation, encouraging learners to express their ideas freely. This experience allowed me to learn effective teaching methods from the teachers and apply them in my future practice.

Additionally, I had the chance to participate in student activities, including cooking, chess lessons, and STEM coding lessons. Interacting with the students enriched my perspective as they taught me new things and made the time spent with them enjoyable.

Exploring New Zealand: Insights, Observations, and Appreciation

by Jim Ka Wai, Jasmine (FS2022/23, The Education University of Hong Kong) The immersion trip to New Zealand has finally come to an end, yet I have learned a lot that will be beneficial for my future life.

Regarding my academic learning at the immersion university, I gained valuable insights into New Zealand culture through completing assignments and attending lectures. In the ethnography course, one of our assignments was to conduct research on a self-selected topic. My groupmate and I were interested in understanding why people choose to migrate to New Zealand and the challenges they face after immigration. In order to gather first-hand information, we conducted interviews with former migrants of New Zealand. This was a valuable and unique opportunity for me to personally get to know more about the locals of New Zealand and see the country through their eyes, which offered a perspective completely different from my own as a visitor and the second-hand information I obtained from the internet.

Other than that, I had a valuable opportunity to observe the daily routines of teachers in New Zealand primary schools, which differed greatly from the system in Hong Kong. One notable difference was the allocation of classrooms, where students from different grades would have lessons together. Additionally, the approach to assignments and assessments was distinct. Instead of assigning homework, students would complete all their work in class. Moreover, students were not ranked based on their assessment performance. Instead, assessments were used to solely evaluate students’ progress and provide additional support to those who needed it. Furthermore, a weekly staff morning tea session was held, where all teachers brought homemade dishes to share with their colleagues. I immensely and consummately enjoyed the relaxing atmosphere during these sessions, as all the staff gathered around a table, sipping coffee and tea while engaging in laughter and conversations. It provided a wonderful opportunity for the staff to interact and foster relationships with one another.

Beyond the university experience, I had the opportunity to try

different authentic foods in Wellington. Among them, one of the most impressive foods I tried was the spinach muffin with cream cheese filling. It was my first time tasting such an exquisite savory muffin! I later realized that savory muffins are not only prevalent but also highly popular in Western countries.

Furthermore, I am extraordinarily grateful for the sponsorship from the Foundation, as it enabled me to explore different parts of New Zealand, even those that were relatively far away from Wellington. For instance, I took advantage of a weekend and traveled by train to Paraparaumu and Red Rock. I thoroughly enjoyed the stunning views and the serene feeling of being surrounded by nature at Red Rock. It was my first time seeing wild seals and a wide variety of different wild birds. The soothing sound of the breeze and ocean created a sense of relaxation that I greatly missed.

Once again, I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude for providing me with the Fung Scholarship, which has been instrumental in broadening my horizons during the immersion programme. I am extremely thankful to have the financial means to support my travel and exploration in Wellington and throughout New Zealand.

From Classrooms to Cultural Adventures: Unveiling Auckland’s Rich Tapestry through Immersion

Pursuing English Education as my major has always ignited a deep passion within me. So, when the chance arose to fully immerse myself in the vibrant city of Auckland, New Zealand, I knew it was an opportunity I couldn't miss out on. Embarking on this immersive journey surpassed all my expectations.

Auckland, renowned for its diversity, provided the perfect pedal for me to broaden my horizons as a future English teacher. New Zealand conjures images of awe-inspiring landscapes, delicious Kiwi fruits, exquisite wines, and, of course, the high cost of airfare. Fortunately, with great honor, I was granted a scholarship from the Victor and William Fung Foundation to support my immersion program and enhance my English education proficiency at the University of Auckland. The chance to fully embrace a culturally rich environment while honing my teaching skills is an experience I will forever hold dear.

As I stepped off the plane, a wave of exhilaration washed over me. My senses were instantly captivated by the city's stunning surroundings, with its luscious greenery and glittering harbors. I can feel right away how the multiculturalism of Auckland embraced me with open arms, providing me with a dynamic setting in which to learn about the intricacies of English teaching.

Being an English Education major, my immersion experience revolved around the acquisition of language and effective communication.

Auckland, with its predominantly English-speaking population, provided the perfect setting for me to enhance my language skills and explore the intricacies of English as a lingua franca through interactions with individuals from all walks of life.

people of various ethnic origins, each with their own unique stories and perspectives. During my time in Auckland, living with a local family granted me a genuine glimpse into New Zealand's daily life. Enjoying traditional New Zealand cuisines and engaging in lively conversations enlarged my understanding of the local culture, turning mealtimes into delightful journeys. The bond formed with my host family through exchanging stories, traditions, and laughter created a surrounding environment that fostered cultural immersion and enhanced my appreciation for Kiwi living. Through these experiences, I not only honed my English language capability but also gained a profound awareness of the cultural diversities amidst Auckland's multinational tapestry.

Beyond the academic aspects, the immersion experience also offered me the opportunity to explore New Zealand’s breathtaking landscapes and natural wonders. From hiking through lush forests to experiencing the thrill of skydiving in Queenstown, I embraced the adventurous spirit that characterizes Kiwi cultures.

These encounters not only revived my spirit but also served as a reminder of the value of integrating experiential learning into my future teaching practices.

The school's cultural excursion to Waiheke Island also left an indelible mark on me, representing an unforgettable experience. Nestled amidst breathtaking natural beauty, we had the extraordinary opportunity to reside in a Maori temple for two days, fully immersing ourselves in Maori traditions, customs, and spirituality. The Maori people embody the deep connection between the land, its original inhabitants, and the nation as a whole, playing a vital role in New Zealand's identity, history, and cultural tapestry.

The tranquil surroundings, coupled with the guidance of Maori elders, fostered a transformative ambiance.

We participated in customary rituals, listened to captivating stories, and discovered the significance of ancestral ties to the land.

In my observation classrooms, Auckland teachers fostered active student engagement through conversations, group projects, and hands-on exercises. Students were encouraged to explore their decent passions, express their viewpoints, and participate in collaborative problem-solving, fostering their curiosity and enhancing their interpersonal and communication abilities. The students' infectious enthusiasm for learning and witnessing the spark of understanding in their eyes brought me immense fulfillment, reaffirming my unwavering dedication to the teaching profession.

My experience in the Auckland teaching practicum sharpened my conception of the importance of tailoring teaching strategies to cater to the diverse needs of students. Comparing the education systems in Hong Kong and New Zealand proved to be an invaluable experience, one that will shape my future teaching practices and inspire me to create inclusive classrooms that prioritize the holistic growth of my students.

Overall, my immersion experience as an English Education major in Auckland exceeded all expectations, leaving an extraordinary impact on me. The teaching practicum showcased the profound influence of education, reinforcing my dedication to guiding students in their language acquisition journey. The cultural exchange and warmth of my homestay experience deepened my understanding of the local way of life. Reflecting on my time in Auckland, I am immensely grateful for the personal, academic, and cultural growth I experienced. Unforgettable HKU Exchange Memories

By Ronnie Zhuge (FS2022/23, Zhejiang University) I feel incredibly fortunate to have embarked on a transformative four-month exchange program in Hong Kong, amidst the everevolving backdrop of a global pandemic in 2021. These months have been a whirlwind of experiences, each leaving me with cherished memories that I am eager to put into words.

Attempting to encapsulate it all in writing may seem daunting, but it is precisely the right moment to distill my thoughts and give structure to my recollections.

The University of Hong Kong (HKU) stands as a beacon of internationalized education, where the exchange of ideas knows no geographical or cultural bounds. My initial days at HKU were marked by the challenge of assimilating into an English-medium classroom. However, what struck me profoundly was the educational model’s openness and inclusivity, allowing students from diverse backgrounds to freely voice their thoughts, share personal narratives, and offer unique perspectives.

Engaging with a professor of political philosophy from London, discussing British politics, and exploring the development of feminist movements in Hong Kong and South Korea with a close-knit group of international students, were experiences that left a lasting impact on me. Attending lectures alongside my Chinese roommate, who had grown up in the United States, further enriched my understanding of

different cultures and perspectives. These multicultural exchanges and intellectual collisions prompted me to delve deeper into my own cultural identity and contemplate how I could contribute my distinctive growth journey and experiences to the global discourse.

Throughout these exchanges, I found myself reflecting on my “Chineseness” and its place within the global context. It was a period of self-discovery and a realization that my cultural background could be a valuable lens through which I could contribute to discussions on global issues.

When I stepped out of the classroom, I eagerly explored the enchanting landscape of Hong Kong Island, a city brimming with endless possibilities. One of my favorite pastimes was ascending the Central escalator, leisurely making my way to the Mid-levels. On my descent, I would stumble upon the iconic old shop known as Lan Fong Yuen. As the sun set, I would alight at Kennedy Town Station and take a stroll to the beachfront, where the invigorating sea breeze would caress my

senses. New Year’s Eve was a particularly vibrant occasion, with Times Square in Causeway Bay bustling with a jubilant crowd. I would join the throngs of revelers, converging at the Big Clock, eagerly awaiting the New Year’s Eve countdown.

These moments of wandering through the streets and alleys, adorned with evocative names, held a profound significance. As I ambled through these captivating locales, with the strains of Cantonese songs wafting through my headphones, I felt an indescribable connection to the city. Despite being in an unfamiliar place where nobody knew my name, I was embraced by the gentle sea breeze and the lilting cadence of the Hong Kong dialect.

My time in Hong Kong was not just a standalone experience; it served as a pivotal stepping stone that has significantly aided my transition into pursuing a Master’s degree at the University of Tokyo in Japan. The rich academic and cultural exposure I gained during my exchange program at the University of Hong Kong has proven to be invaluable as I embark on this new academic journey. The rigorous coursework, multicultural interactions, and the need to adapt to an unfamiliar environment have all served as a robust foundation, equipping me with the resilience and adaptability essential for continuing my graduate-level studies.

The lessons I learned in Hong Kong about embracing diversity, fostering an openminded approach, and harnessing the collective wisdom of global perspectives have already begun to enhance my academic pursuits and research endeavors in Japan. As I undertake my Master’s studies, I deeply appreciate the holistic growth that my Hong Kong experience has afforded me, and I look forward to continuing to apply these lessons as I strive for academic excellence and crosscultural understanding in Tokyo.

I must take a moment to express my deepest gratitude to the Victor and William Fung Foundation for making this extraordinary journey possible. Reflection on AI Development

By Merabi Chkhenkeli (FS2013/14, University of Oxford) This year's conference stood out as a reflection of our current global context, characterised by shifting power dynamics and trade patterns, accelerated by the emergence of new technologies.

One significant focus of the conference was Artificial Intelligence (AI), which was highlighted by a keynote address delivered by Harry Shum, a seminal figure in both the technological and business realms of AI. Shum’s extensive experience in the field spans several decades, providing him with a unique historical perspective that few can rival. His talk not only offered informative insights but also provided valuable historical context enriched by his personal involvement in the technological and commercial evolution of AI. As a political scientist specialising in the social and political implications of AI, I have explored various frameworks to comprehend its impact. In line with this, a critical question arises: Is AI merely a passing trend or does it represent a new "medium" comparable to the invention of the printing press, radio, or television? Shum's keynote address offered a compelling lens on this matter. He positioned AI as the latest evolution in human-machine interaction, progressing from Graphical User Interfaces (GUI) to search engines and recommendation systems, and now to dialogue-based interactions. Each of these stages has not only spawned billion-dollar industries but has also had far-reaching societal implications. For instance, search engines revolutionised information access by providing instant responses to queries, while recommendation systems personalised suggestions based on our online behaviour. Dialogue-based AI, such as large language models and autonomous vehicles, enables real-time, two-way interactions between humans and machines.

The overarching question that permeated the conference, panel discussions, and my own research is: What will be the societal consequences of these advancements? Harry Shum expressed optimism, citing potential benefits in education, healthcare, the democratisation of knowledge, and the augmentation of human work. However, concerns persist, particularly in light of recent events like the deepfake-driven election in Slovakia, which occurred a week prior to the conference. While current commercially available AI models may appear relatively safe, the proliferation of open-source and deep web versions, like WormGPT (an unrestrained ChatGPT), has raised significant concerns regarding misinformation and exploitation for financial or political gain by malicious actors.

While the conference sparked more questions than it answered, I was heartened by the robust engagement on these issues, especially during the technology polygram and discussions with other Fung scholars.

Addressing the challenges posed by AI will necessitate an interdisciplinary approach involving technologists, entrepreneurs, academics, and policymakers. Central to this effort will be the development of value-aligned AI and effective governance structures at both national and multilateral levels.

This imperative is further underscored by the significance of ChinaWestern interactions in the AI sphere. The Fung Foundation holds a unique position in facilitating this dialogue. Many Fung Scholars possess expertise in machine learning, with half of the student-led technology polygram talks focused on AI. Others are deeply involved in policy issues and China-U.S. relations, offering ample opportunities for synergy. Fung Scholars hail from the major AI innovation hubs, such as China, Japan, Singapore, the E.U., the U.K., and the U.S. While I was unable to provide pictures for this article, I do have access to the latest multimodal ChatGPT. This model utilises text prompts to generate specialised instructions for the Dall-E 3 image-generation model. When prompted to envision a future where AI contributes to positive outcomes for humanity, the generated images seem to emphasise education, agriculture, and advanced technology.

Interestingly, both images showcase autonomous surveillance drones, pointing to the emphasis on this AI-driven technology and its potential implications, whether positive or negative, depending on human utilisation. It is important to note that these images are not intended as prescient glimpses into the future, but rather as representations of our own fears and aspirations, as captured by the artwork included in the training set of Dall-E 3’.

While it is crucial not to underestimate the risks associated with AI, including the potential for unintended catastrophic outcomes, the extent of impact from this versatile technology is largely determined by human agency. Solving the technical challenge of AI alignment is a formidable task, but we must also address containment concerns, tackle policy challenges, and navigate the societal learning curve that encompasses ethics and responsible usage. The Fung Foundation is well-positioned to nurture discussions and debates on these topics, and I encourage fellow scholars and fellows to contribute their insights and join us in shaping the narrative of AI’s future.

My Norway Exchange Journey

By Sophia Sonnert (FS2022/23, Massachusetts Institute of Technology) During my MIT International Science & Technology Initiatives (MISTI) internship, I worked at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology in Trondheim, focusing on a research project on droplet sorting for a “lab on a chip” process in the Biophysics and Medical Technology department. The objective of my project was to optimize droplet sorting in a microfluidic device by studying droplet formation and sorting techniques.

Living in Norway presented both successes and challenges for me. Adjusting to a less diverse environment than my hometown was a challenge, especially when it came to finding specific Asian groceries. Although I eventually found Asian grocery stores in Norway, they were not quite the same as what I was accustomed to. Additionally, not knowing Norwegian poses another obstacle, despite most Norwegians being proficient in English.

Nevertheless, one notable success during my time in Norway was the opportunity to meet many friendly and welcoming international graduate students at the university.

Additionally, I found success in staying active and immersing myself in the natural beauty of the country. I made it a habit to exercise outdoors and explore the stunning landscapes, which greatly contributed to my overall experience. Furthermore, I quickly adapted to the bus system, allowing me to navigate the city with ease.

Overall, my experience living in Norway has been overwhelmingly positive. The country boasts breathtaking nature, providing ample opportunities for frequent hiking. While I have always enjoyed hiking, living in a place where nature is easily accessible and hiking is a daily possibility was a new and exhilarating experience for me. Looking ahead, I now

realize that I desire to reside in a location close to nature, enabling me to engage in regular hiking activities. Being surrounded by nature has a calming effect, and Norway’s serene atmosphere resonates deeply with me.

Many other international students also expressed a similar sentiment, noting that they felt they had more time to relax and rejuvenate.

Norwegians’ dedication to summer holidays as a time for rest was also admirable. They prioritize work-life balance, which was a refreshing departure from the sometimes all-consuming work culture in the United States.

In addition to Norway, I participated in study abroad programs in Germany and Mexico through MIT, which enriched my international experiences and prepared me for my time in Norway.

I thoroughly enjoyed these international opportunities and aspire to have a future career that allows me to work on an international scale.

My research experience in biophysics in Norway was particularly influential in shaping my academic path and helped me determine my specific interests for graduate school. It also sparked my curiosity about pursuing graduate studies in a different country.

I would like to send my sincere thanks to the Fung Foundation for funding my research internship in Norway. The experience contributed to my personal and professional growth. I not only gained valuable insights in the research field but also formed meaningful friendships during my time there. My experience in attending the Fung Scholars Leadership Conference 2023

By Joses Wong (FS2010/11, Singapore Management University) Upon receiving the William and Victor Fung Foundation scholarship years ago, I held the belief that it would be a singular occurrence, and I did not anticipate any future contact or involvement with the Foundation. Therefore, I was pleasantly surprised when they reached out and invited me to participate in this year’s Fung Leadership Conference for alumni scholars. Through this invitation, I discovered a thriving network of Alumni Scholars from diverse years, ages, backgrounds, and nationalities.

After enduring years of limited human interaction during the COVID-19 pandemic, I eagerly accepted the invitation to be part of the Foundation’s first in-person Leadership Conference in Hong Kong since the pandemic began.

Entering HKUST's International Affairs Centre on the first day of the conference, I arrived with an open mind and a readiness to meet my fellow scholars, not knowing what to expect or if I would encounter anyone familiar. I was relieved to find that I was not alone in taking this step, as there were approximately 50 other attendees, including alumni from prestigious institutions like MIT, Leeds, Oxford, and Tsinghua.

The keynote speech by Professor Harry Shum on Artificial Intelligence was both enlightening and relevant to the most discussed subject of our time. Professor Shum provided a concise history of AI’s development, from the lab to its massmarket applications, including ChatGPT. One key takeaway I gained from Professor Shum’s presentation was the distinction between search engines and ChatGPT. While I predominantly use search engines for research and daily life, I have increasingly relied on ChatGPT for complex tasks. According to Professor Shum, the difference lies in search engines building indexes and ranking based on relevance, while ChatGPT is a more powerful machine that trains models and engages in dialogue using natural language with users.

During the breaks, I found it valuable to network and engage with fellow scholars to gain insights into their work. At lunchtime, I had the pleasure of meeting Merabi, a PhD student in Political Science at UCLA, originally from London with Georgian roots. His work and experience in the development aid field resonated with me, as I had spent many years working in public service.

globalization trends in a fractured world, a topic I had intricately followed and studied for years. Hearing Hong Kong’s perspective on ongoing US-China tensions was particularly interesting, considering Singapore’s long-standing stance of maintaining a balanced and neutral position. Professor Tang acknowledged the seemingly bleak global political and economic landscape but offered reassurance with his viewpoint on a multi-polar world, with ASEAN emerging as a rising pole.

The polygram session featured three different topics, and I attended the one focused on technology. I thoroughly enjoyed the format of having a series of quick presentations by fellow scholars, which allowed for a wide range of topics to be discussed. The technology polygram encompassed various subjects, including ChatGPT in academic writing, nuclear fission, recursive feature machines, and data privacy. Although time constraints prevented indepth discussions, it was a fantastic opportunity for me to explore new areas of interest.

After the conference concluded, the local scholars graciously took us on a tour of Hong Kong, despite an approaching typhoon. Andrew Poon (FS2018/19, City University of Hong Kong) and Kitty Chan (FS2013/14, The University of Hong Kong) led my group and treated us to a delightful dinner of Wanton Noodles. It was not only a gastronomic delight but also an occasion for me to gain firsthand insights into Hong Kong’s political and economic situation from local perspectives.

Overall, I am thrilled that I made the decision to attend this conference, as it proved to be invaluable both in terms of learning and networking. It was unfortunate that the plans for the second day were disrupted by the typhoon, as I was eagerly looking forward to meeting my fellow scholars. Nevertheless, I greatly treasured the new connections I formed and eagerly anticipate the opportunity to reunite with everyone next year!
