Welcome to our 2025 Day Excursion Brochure

We have had a great time this year putting together a tempting variety of wonderful days out to towns, castles, craft shows, palaces, flower shows, vintage trains, lunches, afternoon teas, relaxing boat rides, concerts and West End shows!

Through 2025 you will find old favourites such as trips to Buckingham Palace, the Bluebell Railway and RHS Wisley, as well as annual events such as the wonderful Chelsea Flower Show, The Creative Craft Show and The Royal International Airshow at Fairford. We have all your National Trust favourites, including Chartwell – the much-loved home of Winston Churchill, Lacock Abbey and Historic Village – the tranquil setting for many films and TV series, and Brownsea Island – a haven for wildlife in the middle of Poole Harbour. Don’t forget, if you are a National Trust member, you can enjoy these excursions at a reduced rate.

We have a fantastic selection of West End shows (see the centre pages!), and don’t forget that The Mayflower in Southampton has West-End quality performances throughout the year. Grab the chance to see Hamilton in March and April, or try Kinky Boots, Mary Poppins, Mamma Mia! or Calamity Jane, all at a theatre close to home.

Of course, we are still adding dates for ABBA VOYAGE at the specially designed ABBA Arena in London, and we are delighted to have an extra date for Starlight Express – another spectacular show with unique staging which sets the cast members racing around and through the rapt audience.

Spring is a spectacular time at Exbury with masses of spring blooms offering a profusion of colour including the Daffodil Meadow, a sea of happy yellow heads staring back at you as you look out across to the Beaulieu River. Our visit includes a magical 20-minute journey on the Exbury Gardens Steam Railway to see the northeast corner of the gardens and North Lake. There is a Tea Room and Gift shop.

BEAULIEU MOTOR MUSEUM & PALACE HOUSE

We arrive at Beaulieu to enjoy all its attractions including The National Motor Museum, Palace House and Gardens, the monorail and the veteran bus and so much more. With over 280 vehicles in its world-famous collection, the National Motor Museum tells the story of motoring in Britain from humble beginnings to the present day. Displays include classic cars, historic sporting motors, modern rally cars, F1 racers, a rustic 1930’s country garage and Wheels – a sedate pod ride through motoring history. There is a restaurant and gift shop on site.

The Mountbatten Festival of Music returns with the massed bands of His Majesty's Royal Marines. The festival sees the Royal Marines showcase their incredible musicianship and pageantry and features a wide range of musical styles. They are given the “West End” treatment with spectacular lighting effects and it will include music from the big screen and superb solo items, as well as the traditional marches and overtures that have proved such a hit with the audiences over the years. This wonderful urban oasis for wildlife and people is just 10 minutes from Hammersmith. Stroll among the lakes, ponds and gardens to discover some of the prettiest ducks, geese and swans from around the globe - plus the family of otters. Find out how WWT's conservation work is helping to protect them and learn more about their habitats and behaviour. Refreshments are available in the café.

In 2025 we are delighted to offer once again many days out which feature some of the remarkable properties, houses and gardens owned and lovingly run by the National Trust. From blossoms to bluebells, Hever Castle & Gardens have got spring covered this year with a colourful celebration that promises to delight. Highclere is the home of the 8th Earl & Countess of Carnarvon, and where the TV drama Downton Abbey was filmed. Visit the castle and learn about real life at Highclere and see the Drawing Room in which Maggie Smith delivered many a withering comment to some unfortunate relation! In the castle’s cellars discover the fascinating Egyptian Exhibition of Tutankhamun and the history of its discovery. Take a walk in the wonderful grounds and explore the gardens that lie beyond the lawns. The Woods of Goodwill, the Secret Garden and the Rose Arbour. Café and gift shop on site.

In late spring, 40,000 tulips, from palest pink to nearly black or brightest red, create dazzling mantles of colour in every flower bed, pot and border at Pashley Manor.

With over 100 varieties of tulip on show, complemented by forget-me-nots, pansies, bellis and newly emerging perennials, the sheer volume and fantastic colour of the tulip display is mesmerising to the first time and returning visitor alike.

We arrive in Faversham, for an included two course lunch before a guided tour of Britain's oldest brewery. Learn about the ancient art of brewing, see the brewing and fermentation vessels; try some malted barley and smell locally grown Kentish hops. This 80-minute tour includes a visit to the Old Brewery Store, housed in the old wines and spirits store, featuring impressive displays of historic delivery vehicles, a recreated coopers' workshop, bygone pub signs and a collection of hop picking memorabilia. Ending with a tasting of Shepherd Neame's Kentish ales and speciality lagers. WINDSOR

Windsor Castle is one of the oldest and largest inhabited castle in the world. It has been the family home of British kings and queens for almost 1,000 years from medieval origins to present day. On arrival in Windsor, you have a timed entry ticket at 12:00 to visit the castle (allow at least 2 hours for the visit and time to queue). In the afternoon enjoy a relaxing 40-minute river cruise on the Thames departing from Windsor Promenade.

On arrival in London, we stop in Clerkenwell for a 2-course fish & chip lunch with a hot drink. We then make our way to Highgate Cemetery for a fascinating guided tour of the West Cemetery. This extraordinary side sees the graves of the rich and famous with is gothic tombs and the Egyptian Avenue flanked by massive obelisks and the ancient cedar tree in the Circle of Lebanon. The tour lasts around 70 minutes. With free time to visit the East Wing.

Please Note: The West Wing has steps and steep and uneven paths and no seats. Suitable footwear should be worn and be prepared for all weathers.

Visit the seaside resort of Seaton for a journey on the famous Seaton Tramway.

Ride on a narrowgauge heritage tram through East Devon's glorious Axe Valley, travelling alongside the River Axe estuary through two nature reserves giving an unrivalled view of the abundant wading bird life. We return to the stunning grounds of Beaulieu for the BBC Gardeners’ World Spring Fair for a wonderful day out. This Spring Fair includes Beautiful Borders, and the Hillier Experience packed with planting ideas and stunning displays from top nurseries. Today we travel to Ocean Village, Southampton to meet our Blue Funnel boat for this wonderful scenic cruise. Sail on the local waterways and enjoy the wonderful views of the peaceful coastline and Hampshire’s countryside that Rivers Itchen, Hamble and Test provide. JANE AUSTEN’S HOUSE MUSEUM & WINCHESTER

The house at Chawton is where Jane Austen spent the last eight years of her life and where she did the majority of her mature writing. It retains the charm of a village home, telling the story of Jane Austen and her family. Imagine what life was like during the Victorian era and 1930s as we explore the life-size streets, buildings, shops and vehicles, and see how our homes developed through the decades from the 1930s to 1970s in the authentic room-sets. Told entirely through song with the help of the Narrator, the show follows the story of Jacob’s favourite son Joseph and his 11 brothers. While imprisoned, Joseph discovers his ability to interpret dreams and soon finds himself in front of the mighty but troubled showman, the Pharaoh. Rising majestically from the still waters of its moat, surrounded by 500 acres of parkland and gardens, Leeds Castle is without a doubt one of the most beautiful venues in Kent. Coined ‘The Loveliest Castle in the World’ it is the perfect place for a great day out. Leeds Castle has always been a palace to entertain and impress, with every generation leaving its mark. Today’s interiors are the result of the massive refurbishment by top European designers throughout the 1920s and 30s for its last private owner, Lady Baillie. Our visit is complete with an included cream tea.

Visit the Tower of London - one of the world’s most famous fortresses, that’s been a royal palace, prison, armoury and even a zoo. Take in the breath-taking collection of over 23,000 gemstones, explore the infamous Bloody Tower and venture into the formidable Fortress. There will also be time to explore St Katharine’s Docks for shopping and lunch before your timed entry into the tower.

We travel to Kent for this two-centre excursion. Chartwell, home of Sir Winston Churchill, is still much as it was when the family lived there. His paintings and the gardens reflect Churchill’s love of the landscape and nature. Emmetts Garden is best known for amazing spring colour and views across the Weald of Kent. There are refreshment areas at both venues.

ISLE OF WIGHT – GODSHILL & COWES

We depart on the Wightlink ferry from Portsmouth to Fishbourne and make our way to Godshill for the morning, a quintessential English village boasting some of the oldest architecture on the Isle of Wight. With its delightful medieval church, charming thatched-roofed cottages and a winding main-street lined with traditional tearooms. In the afternoon we travel on to Cowes with free time to explore, or stroll along the High Street, Parade and Esplanade for wonderful views of the bustling harbour and across to The Solent. There is time for shopping or just sitting and watching the world go by!

RHS CHELSEA FLOWER SHOW

A visit to the world’s most prestigious, glamourous British show, RHS Chelsea is a truly wonderful day out. With over 600 exhibitors competing to show off their horticultural talents in the stunning Show Gardens, a Pavilion filled with the most wonderful colours and scents of the most rare and exotic new blooms, plus the opportunity to buy something special for your garden and home, this is one flower show you don’t want to miss!

HOWLETTS WILD ANIMAL PARK

Howletts is a 90-acre adventure park in Kent, dedicated to the conservation, breeding and reintroduction of rare and endangered animals. Get up close and personal with lions, tigers, black rhino, leopards, the world-famous family of Western lowland gorillas, plus the UK’s largest herd of African elephants. There are wooded walkways and pathways to explore plus discover the prehistoric wonders of the Animals of The Ice Age throughout the woodland walk, so there’s plenty for visitors of all ages to enjoy. In an idyllic location with views across the Sussex countryside Standen House was designed by Philip Webb. The house is one of the finest examples of Arts and Crafts workmanship, with Morris & Co. interiors creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere and where the house is dressed for a weekend stay in 1925. A major restoration of the 5-hectare (12-acre) hillside garden showcases year-round seasonal highlights and an award-winning plant collection. Footpaths lead out into the woodlands, with views of the Ashdown, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

THE BRITISH WILDLIFE CENTRE

Visit the finest collection of native species in the country, to see and learn about Britain’s own wonderful wildlife, with over forty different species from tiny harvest mice to magnificent red deer. View elusive night creatures in the Nocturnal House, badgers in their special underground sett, plus Britain’s first walk-through Red Squirrel enclosure. The regular keeper talks tell you more about these animals and the challenges they face in the wild, while seeing them even closer as they are being fed.

LACOCK ABBEY & HISTORIC VILLAGE

We travel to the National Trust village of Lacock in Wiltshire to visit the medieval abbey, turned family home and the birthplace of photography. The picturesque village and 13th-century abbey were given to the National Trust in 1944 by the Talbot family.

The 15th-century inns and cottages create a traditional backdrop for many period films. Refreshments available on site in the café.

Stroll around the Neolithic houses outside the centre, visit the Stonehenge Exhibition and spend time in the café at the Visitor Centre. There will be a free shuttle bus to the ancient stone circle that you can use during the visit. Alternately, visit one of the many animal attractions in the area, to see monkeys, hawks, crocodiles, big cats and many more! You could include lunch or afternoon tea during your day.

WEST END SHOWS

We will drive you to London to see one of the current West End shows. We can also reserve a table for you in a nearby restaurant for a pre-show meal or we can book a restaurant of your choice for dinner after a matinee performance.

DAY EXCURSIONS

INFORMATION AND ADVICE

MAKING A BOOKING

Bookings can be made by telephone or by visiting our office in Aldwick, or by any of our appointed agents. On most excursions we can hold places on your behalf for 2 days without obligation. After this time, each excursion should be paid in full to complete the booking. If we do not hear from you before this deadline, we will assume that the booking is to be cancelled.

CONFIRMATION OF BOOKING

Once you have paid, a confirmation ticket will be issued which acts as a boarding pass on the day of the excursion. It will contain information such as your seat number(s) and pick up time. Return times are also given, but only provide an approximate guideline. We can email these tickets to you, or you can pay a £1 fee per transaction and have the tickets posted to you.

METHOD OF PAYMENT

All normal methods of payment including cash are possible at our offices and appointed agents, or by post with a cheque and a self-addressed stamped envelope, or by credit/debit card by telephone. Cheques should be made payable to Woods Travel Ltd.

BOARDING THE COACH

Your travel ticket clearly shows the departure point and time. Please check this carefully. You are responsible for ensuring you are at the correct departure point at the correct time, and we cannot be liable for any loss or expense suffered by passengers because of their late arrival at any departure point. The coach will wait 5 minutes only before departing.

NON-ARRIVAL OF COACH

If the vehicle has not arrived 10 minutes after the due time of departure you must immediately telephone our office where we will advise you of any problem.

DELAYS

We arrange departure times to give reasonable allowance for delays which may be incurred en route to venues. In the event of delays beyond our reasonable control (roadworks, accidents, major incidents etc.), liability is restricted to returning you to your point of departure.

PASSENGERS WITH DISABILITIES

Should you or a member of your party have any medical condition or disability that may affect the excursion or theatre booking, please advise us prior to confirming the booking so that we can advise as to the suitability of the trip and/or venue. If a passenger requires assistance then they must travel with an able bodied carer or friend. Please advise us if you intend to bring any walking aids, particularly scooters as only certain models can be accommodated in the hold of the coach. Every effort will be made to accommodate each passenger who wishes to travel.

ALTERATIONS

We reserve the right to change the coach size for any excursion, which may result in your seat number changing, and although we will always endeavour to keep you in your original booked seat, this may not be possible. Whilst every effort will be made not to alter any part of the excursion, if circumstances are such that alterations are required, we reserve the right to do so. The company gives advice on journey times in good faith, but does not guarantee the completion of any journey at a specific time and will not be liable for loss or inconvenience caused by delay due to traffic conditions, weather etc.

CONDUCT OF PASSENGERS

The company reserves the right to refuse to carry any passenger in the event of unreasonable conduct which in our opinion is likely to cause damage, distress, danger or annoyance to other clients, employees, property or to any third party. If you are prevented from travelling or continuing your excursion by such a termination our responsibility for your excursion thereupon ceases. Full cancellation charges will apply and we will be under no obligation for any refund, compensation or loss which may occur.

SHOW CASTINGS

We are unable to guarantee that advertised or particular performers will appear in any show or concert, and no refunds will be made unless offered by the supplier/promoter.

CANCELLATIONS

(A) BY THE COMPANY

Should circumstances arise, for whatever reason, and we are forced to cancel an excursion, all monies paid will be refunded. We accept no liability for any subsequent consequential loss.

(B) BY THE PASSENGER

The tickets issued are non-refundable and the money is not transferable to another booking. However, should you wish to sell on or give away your excursion tickets, Woods office must be advised and a new ticket will be issued to the new traveller to ensure that all information is correct. If Woods are able to resell your tickets on your behalf there will be a £10 per person charge for this service. It is not always possible to sell on tickets which require photo ID for entry to a venue, such as Highgrove Gardens.

TRAVEL INSURANCE UPDATE

Following the withdrawal of ERGO Travel Insurance, we are unfortunately no longer able to offer travel insurance for our Day Excursions and we apologise for the inconvenience this may cause.

For those who purchased travel insurance with us before the 3rd May 2024, your ERGO policy remains valid and cover for your day excursion is unaffected. Please retain your insurance documents.
