The SOFL has already launched many language programmes and will launch a myriad of foreign language programmes in the days ahead. In this respect, we are conﬁdent that through the Open and Distance Learning methodologies, EduSat mediated dissemination of knowledge and online system of education delivery, the projected goal of quality education will be achieved. If your answer is yes, then you come to School of Foreign Languages (SOFL), Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU). This way we are bringing all the aspiring learners of the country into the ﬁeld of learning foreign languages. At present, SOFL oﬀers a number of Language programmes. These are: Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Japanese, Persian, Russian and Spanish. Several programmes in other foreign languages will be introduced very soon. Various kinds of programmes that include face-toface and ODL mode are oﬀered with diﬀerent kind of degrees. These are: Certiﬁcate, Diploma, Graduation, Post-graduate Diploma, M.A. and Ph.D. If you don’t have time to come to the classroom on weekdays, certain language programmes can also be oﬀered in weekends. The faculty members in our School are one of the best available in the country in their respective ﬁeld of expertise. SOFL has also got the distinction to collaborate with other educational institutions not only within India, but outside the country as well. Talks have been going on to establish a branch of the School of Foreign Languages abroad. Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) was established in 1985 by an Act of Parliament (50 of 1985); with the aim of democratising higher education and reaching out to learners belonging to diverse sections of our population, residing in remote, far-ﬂung areas of the country. On 19th November, 2009, IGNOU entered its 25th year; a signiﬁcant milestone in its illustrious growth in becoming one of the world’s largest universities. The University has undergone rapid expansion and emerged as an international institution in the ﬁeld of Open and Distance Learning (ODL). The School of Foreign Languages (SOFL) is one of the 21 Schools of Studies at IGNOU, established towards the end of 2007. The School of Foreign Languages at IGNOU teaches eight diﬀerent languages ― Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Japanese, Spanish, Persian, and Russian - delivering these innovative, ﬂexible and cost-eﬀective foreign language(s) programmes through Open & Distance Learning (ODL), via e-learning (Online) and the traditional classroom teaching (On-Campus) ensuring high standards of excellence. These foreign language(s) programmes are oﬀered at Certiﬁcate, Diploma and Post-graduate Diploma level to capacitate the learners professionally in today’s job market whereas the Post-graduate and Research programmes develop the critical thinking skills of the learners and their intellectual & analytical capacities. By oﬀering a world class, need-based education and training in Foreign Languages and Cultures, the School of Foreign Languages intends, on the one hand, to develop students’ communicative abilities in their chosen language(s), and on the other, to inculcate cultural understanding and inter-cultural communication in learners through the study of language, literature, civilisation, and cultures so that the learners are trained to enter the global society. In view of the existing demand due to its multiple practical applications, the study of foreign languages is gaining lots of importance in the academic studies, and the demand is growing continuously. In the era of globalisation, where more and more businesses work closely with companies in other countries, the demand of specialised foreign language experts, who can communicate eﬀectively in diﬀerent foreign languages and understand other cultures, has grown tremendously. The Programme is based on the textbook Connexions, Methode de Français, Regine Merieux, Yues Loiseau. Dideir, 2001, based on the common European Framework of Reference for languages formulated by the Council of Europe for all European Languages. The book ‘Connexions’ is being supplemented with wrap up material by IGNOU in the form of user manual with study guide, added exercises, glossary and phonetics as additional material to help the learner. The signiﬁcant feature is that material has been prepared for the learners in both French-Hindi for Hindi phones and French-English for Anglo phones. This fully online programme is being oďŹ€ered by IGNOU in collaboration with the Instituto Cervantes, a public institution under the auspices of the Spanish Ministry. AVE (Spanish Virtual Classroom) is an internet-based educational infrastructure set up to teach Spanish. The students do not need any additional software in their computers to be able to access AVE. Once the student is enrolled, his/her username and password will be provided online by IGNOU. This programme is organised into three modules of four credits each, each credit amounting to 30 hours of total study time.

Iran Culture House is collaborating with IGNOU to provide learning support along with the content software to the learners. This introductory programme oﬀered face-to-face (on-campus) has two parts: Chinese Language (Mandarin) and Chinese Culture. It gives students a basic foundation for their study of Standard Chinese mandarin. It provides essential grounding in the pronunciation and tonal structure of Chinese Language. The programme will help learners to recognise and write approximately 300 basic Chinese characters as well as recognise a further 500 Chinese sentences and phrases. On the other hand, students will not only learn the language, but acquire an overall understanding of Chinese political, social and economic aspects as well. After successfully completing this programme, students will be able to participate in simple conversations in Chinese on topics relating to self, family, study and day-to-day conversation. The Chinese language methodologies are presented in a way that aims to develop students’ conﬁdence and skills as a language learner in order to start on the long-term journey towards an understanding of Chinese language Culture and Society in general. Ph.D. in araBic Doctoral Programme in Arabic is aimed at developing a critical understanding of Arabic Language, Literature and Culture. Scholars are likely to contribute in the modern teaching methods for Arabic, contribution of Indians to Arabic world of knowledge and a deeper understanding of the Arab world with emphasis on Language, Literature and Culture. Eligibility : An M. Phil. Degree and a Post-graduate Degree in Arabic with a minimum of 55% marks (50% for SC/ST/PH candidates) or an equivalent grade from a university or a recognised institution of higher learning. reSearch anD teaching aSSiStant (rta) The School has appointed a Research and Teaching Assistant (RTA) in Arabic discipline. The scholar is pursuing full-time research programme in Arabic language. SOFL conducted the First International Translation Workshop (31st August to 5th September, 2009) in collaboration with the School of Translation Studies and Training, IGNOU, and the French Embassy. Participants from all over India were trained in translating literary texts from French to Indian Languages (Hindi, Marathi, Bengali and Tamil). The Second International Translation Workshop – Special Focus on Lexicography was organised from 8th-13th March, 2010. This workshop trained participants to prepare lexicons/dictionaries between French and Indian Languages (Hindi, Marathi, Bengali, Tamil, Santhali and Assamese). The Third International Workshop on Teaching of French through ODL Mode was organised from 14th16th February, 2011, in collaboration with the French Embassy in India. Participants from all over India were trained in the theoretical aspects of Teaching of French through ODL mode. 16

Dr. G. Chaudhuri is Professor and Director of the School of Foreign Languages, IGNOU. He did his M.A. in Chinese Language and Literature from Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), New Delhi, M.A. in Political Science from Calcutta University, Kolkata, M.Phil in China’s Foreign Policy from JNU and Ph.D. on China in the New PRoF G. ChauDhuRi International Economic and Political Order from The PROFESSOR (CHINA STUDIES) DIRECTOR, School of International Studies, JNU. Following this, he SCHOOL OF FOREIGN went to Beijing University, China, for higher studies LANGUAGES under UGC Scheme. He was also a visiting faculty at the Hong Kong University, H.K. He has authored a book on China’s Foreign Policy, a number of monographs on Buddhism from India to China, India – China Trade and also published a number of articles on various aspects of China in leading Newspapers and Journals. Presently, Dr. Chaudhuri is teaching Chinese Mandarin and Political System of China at the IGNOU campus and is assisted by one Chinese national. He is also working on how eﬀectively the Chinese mandarin programme can be oﬀered in Open and Distance Learning (ODL) mode so that interested learners in any part of the country can take the beneﬁt of learning Mandarin. He, as the Director of SOFL, has also played a key role in structuring the vision of the School by introducing new courses in French, Spanish, Russian, Japanese and German languages making the same available in Open and Distance Learning (ODL), On-line and Face-to-Face modes. This is the unique feature of IGNOU which has not been ventured into by any other universities in India. Another objective of imparting various languages and cultures is to increase employability of students by connecting them with leading industries dealing with speciﬁc countries of interests. Before joining IGNOU, Dr. Chaudhuri taught in a Management School in Gurgaon for four years. Prior to this, he taught Chinese and did extensive research in Training College, Govt. of India, for more than 20 years.
Dr. Mishra specialises in Linguistics, Applied Linguistics (which includes the domain area of translation), Comparative Literature and Indian grammatical Traditions. With research experience in Semiotics, literary theories and comparative literature. Dr. S.K. Mishra has contributed in many national and international projects and has written several research papers published in accredited journals

Mr. Singh is Assistant Professor (Spanish) at the School of Foreign Languages, Indira Gandhi National Open University, New Delhi. He is responsible for the supervision of all the aspects of the Spanish language courses. He completed B.A. (Hons) in 2003 and M.A. in 2005 in Hispanic Studies from JNU, and Post-graduMR. ViKaSh KuMaR SiNGh ate Oﬃcial Doctoral Research Studies (M.Phil) in ASSISTANT PROFESSOR (SPANISH) Teaching of Spanish as a Foreign Language from the CFP del Instituto Cervantes, and UIMP, Spain in 2007. During his pre-doctoral research studies, he was actively involved in the research-teaching practice at the EOI de Madrid & CFP, Instituto Cervantes, Spain. He is currently pursuing his Ph.D. from JNU & working on his thesis related to acquisition of Spanish as a Foreign Language in multilingual & multicultural Indian classrooms. Further, he was awarded Diploma in Spanish Language (Superior level) by UIMP, Spain in 2004; Certiﬁed Examiner of DELE in 2006 and Diploma of Spanish (Superior level) – oﬃcial accreditation issued and recognised by the Ministry of Education & Culture of Spain in 2008. He has also done Advanced Diploma of Proﬁciency in Portuguese from Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi. After his return from Spain in 2007, he started teaching Spanish at the Centre for Spanish, Portuguese, Italian & Latin-American Studies, JNU, Embassy of Peru in India (under India-Peru Friendship Association), New Delhi, IIT-Delhi, Instituto Cervantes, New Delhi, YWCA, New Delhi as a visiting faculty ﬁrst and later, as Assistant Professor at SOFL, IGNOU. Mr. Singh has presented research papers/workshops in several national & international seminars/conferences and has also published in several referred journals. He has been a recipient of several research fellowships, which sponsored him as a Visiting Research Scholar at several institutions and universities in Spain, among others, from the Provincial Autonomous Government of Castilla Y León, Spain (2008), Casa de la India, Valladolid, Spain (2008), Spanish Agency of International Cooperation for the Development (Spain) in 2005-2006 & 2004, MEA, Govt. of Mexico in 2005, Fundaçao Oriente, Portugal in 2005, and JRF, University Grants Commission in 2005. He has also provided professional consultancy in the ﬁeld of Spanish translation, consecutive & simultaneous interpretation to several private & public institutions.
Dr. Deepanwita completed her B.A. (Hons)., M.A., and M.Phil from Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi followed by Ph.D. on Indo-French Tourism from Indira Gandhi National Open University, New Delhi. For her doctoral work, she received fellowship from the Indian Council of Social Sciences Research (ICSSR), New Delhi in June 2008 to carry out ﬁeld study in France. She has vast experience in French language teaching DR. DEEPaNwita SRiVaStaVa ASSISTANT PROFESSOR to varied learner groups at Universities (Jamia Milia (FRENCH) Islamia, University of Delhi) and Business schools specialising in International Trade -- (Indian Institute of Foreign Trade -IIFT, New Delhi, Lal Bahadur Shastri Institute of Management, Fortune Institute of International Business ) New Delhi. Her current research areas focus mainly on innovation in Distance Language Learning/Teaching in the Indian Context. Earlier publications and conference/seminar presentations have focussed on various aspects on the language situation in India as also impact and role of French language in the contemporary Indian tourism industry. Dr. Saleem is an Assistant Professor of Arabic at the School of Foreign Languages. His area of specialisation is teaching and learning Arabic as a foreign language. He writes in Arabic Urdu and English and has published more than 30 articles in all the three languages in various reputed magazines and newspapers. He is the ﬁrst to advocate new methods and techniques for teaching Arabic as a foreign language in his research work for M.Phil titled ‘Methods of Arabic Language Study in Indian Madrasas between Teaching and Achievement’ and Ph.D. titled ‘Teaching and Learning Arabic as a Foreign Language in India, Problems and Prospects with 20 Model Lessons.’ His other areas of interest are culture and literature of Pre-Islamic Period. He also takes keen interest in Arabic, Urdu and Persian Poetry Currently, Dr. Saleem has designed along with several young Arabic experts, a very simple, innovative and learner friendly study material for the learners at IGNOU. Mr. Shivaji Bhaskar is Assistant Professor in School of Foreign Languages, IGNOU. He did his M.A. from Centre of Russian Studies, Jawaharlal Nehru University and M.Phil from the School of International studies, Jawaharlal Nehru University. Prior to joining IGNOU, Mr. Shivji Bhaskar worked in the capacity of interpreter for various organizations of high repute like National Institute of Rural Development, coﬀee Board of India and others to name a few. Presently Mr. Shivaji Bhaskar is coordinating the development of the Russian Language and culture Programme. His area of specialization is Area Studies, Teaching of Russian as Foreign Language, Culture and Civilization of Russia, Translation of Scientiﬁc and Social Science material and Interpretation.
Mr.Sarwarul Haque is a full-time consultant for Persian discipline in the School of Foreign Languages, IGNOU. He did his graduation and post-graduation from Centre of Persian and Central Asian Studies, Jawaharlal Nehru University. His M.Phil. and Ph.D. research work is based on Mutiny Journalism from JNU itself. He is examining the Persian documents of 1857 for the last ﬁve years in various archives across India for his Ph.D. thesis entitled “India’s ﬁrst war of Independence as reﬂected in Persian Sources”. These sources include Persian newspapers, Royal orders (Farmans), FIRs, correspondence between the king, commanders and the Mutineers about military, administrative and political accomplishments. Besides the academic and research commitments, he is also associated as an interpreter with Whistling Woods International, Mumbai (ﬁlm and media institute), run by Subhash Ghai and Mukta Arts.

MR. tauQuiR alaM, RESEARCH & TEACHING ASSISTANT (ARABIC)
He has been a Research and Teaching Assistant of Arabic Studies at the School Of Foreign Languages since 2008. He has completed his Graduation, Masters along with M.Phil from Jawaharlal Nehru University. The overall theme of his M.Phil research has been the Indo-Saudi Cultural Relations since 1950â€™s. His primary area of research at IGNOU includes the application of modern techniques to the development of Arabic language which he plans to pursue for his PhD Thesis as well. While focusing primarily on the Arabic language, he has worked extensively on the various nuances and approaches to the Arabic language. His special areas of interest include the Arab history, literature, and culture. He has a keen curiosity to study the cultural and political dynamics of West Asian countries, an interest which he developed when he did a course on the Politics of West Asia during his Masters in JNU and plans to further his interest in these areas. As a RTA in IGNOU he has contributed extensively towards the launching of Arabic Language programme which would provide a basic and communicative knowledge of Arabic language to the student community in the simplest of forms. He has also been the Assistant Editor for the above said CertiďŹ cate Programme in Arabic Language and has made his academic contribution by writing Units in the Communication Skills Block of the same Programme in the SOFL. He has participated in many national and international Seminars in both JNU and IGNOU. He has also contributed in writing articles for career magazines.
Ms. Tiphaine Amar specialises in Teaching of French as foreign language and is currently involved in development of various teaching programme for Teachers of French. She pursued higher education in the domain areas of modern French Literature and FLE from, Avignon, Montpellier Avignon, Aix-en-Provence and Grenoble.
