INTRODUCTION From the stunning scenery of Bantry Bay in Ireland and the dramatic coastline of Mull in Scotland to the islands of Jersey and Tresco, this voyage takes you to some of the most remote and romantic places in Great Britain and Ireland. On your journey, you will visit historical castles, great gardens and magnificent country houses.

JULY 26 GREENOCK, SCOTLAND Embark Aegean Odyssey in the port of Greenock on the River Clyde near Glasgow this afternoon, with time to settle in before an evening sailing.

JULY 27 OBAN, SCOTLAND Morning at sea, with an afternoon arrival in Oban for an included excursion to Inveraray Castle, the family seat of the Duke of Argyll, Chief of the Clan Campbell. Combining Baroque, Palladian and Gothic architecture, this beautifully presented country house has exquisite formal gardens, as well as a fine collection of family portraits, tapestries, furniture and an armoury. Then return to Aegean Odyssey for an evening sail.

JULY 28 TOBERMORY, SCOTLAND Morning at sea, during which the ship will cruise past Fingal’s Cave on the Isle of Staffa, en route to the Sound of Mull, before arriving at the picturesque harbour at Tobermory.

A leisure afternoon here to explore ashore, followed by an evening sail.

JULY 29 KILLYBEGS, IRELAND Morning at sea, for an afternoon arrival in Killybegs, a major Irish fishing port that is the ideal place to explore the wild, atmospheric Atlantic coastline, with a choice of three excursions:

A Walk Through Donegal Town, including a visit to the 15thcentury castle which lay in ruins for nearly two centuries until it was restored in the 1990s. The town is also a renowned centre

for the Irish tweed industry, so free time will be available to explore a famous factory and outlet.

Alternatively, the Spectacular Donegal Scenery excursion will take you to Dungloe in The Rosses, where each July the ‘Mary from Dungloe International Festival’ takes place. We will then continue to the village of Crolly, home of the internationally acclaimed singer Enya.

Or, take a trip around Delightful Donegal Bay by Waterbus, including Belles Island, St Ernan’s Island and a native seal colony. There will then be some free time to visit John McGee’s tweed store, before an evening sail. Please note: the waterbus is NOT exclusive. Waterbus sailing times are tidal and may be cancelled unexpectedly due to bad weather.

JULY 30 AT SEA Full day at sea to enjoy the ship’s amenities and listen to some lectures from our expert guest speakers, as Aegean Odyssey cruises past the Cliff of Moher and remote Aran Islands.

JULY 31 GLENGARRIFF, IRELAND Breakfast arrival in Glengarriff, the gateway to the Beara Peninsula, on world-renowned Bantry Bay. This mystical and unspoilt region of Ireland has attracted visitors for hundreds of years, and you will have a choice of three morning excursions: Bantry House and Gardens is the ancestral home of the Earls of Bantry. Set in beautiful surroundings, the house has a splendid collection of tapestries and artwork. One of the highlights of the gardens is the Hundred Steps, a monumental staircase built of local stone.

The Cliffs of Moher

Alternatively, A Famine Story takes you to Skibbereen, one of the worst affected towns in Ireland during the Great Famine of 1845. This terrible event is commemorated in the Skibbereen Heritage Centre.

Or Scenic Gougane Barra takes you to a tiny lake-bound island that in the 6th-century was the hermitage of St Finbarr, patron saint of Cork. Today a 19th-century oratory now stands in its place.

The afternoon will then be at leisure, before an evening sail.

Donegal

You may also take an optional full day excursion to The Kingdom of Kerry, featuring a scenic drive to one of Ireland’s leading stately homes, Muckross House, followed by Killarney, where many monarchs and artists have been inspired, and the pretty village of Kenmare.

DESTINATION TIP DUBLIN With plenty of free time scheduled for exploring this vibrant capital, the evening should be reserved for sampling the famous pub culture.

During the day, garden lovers should not miss the opportunity to travel 3km out of Dublin’s centre to the National Botanic Gardens.

Entry is free and the award-winning Palm House Complex is spectacular. The gardens are also host to the National Herbarium.

AUGUST 1 CORK, IRELAND

AUGUST 2 DUBLIN, IRELAND

Early morning arrival in Cork, Ireland’s second city, cheerfully referred to by the locals as the ‘real capital of Ireland’. The River Lee flows around the centre, an island packed with grand Georgian parades, cramped 17th-century alleys and modern masterpieces such as the opera house. Choice of morning excursions:

Morning at sea before a lunchtime arrival for an afternoon walking tour of Dublin City Highlights, including the Customs House, the Old Parliament House and Trinity College. We will then continue to the National Gallery of Ireland, the Government Buildings, St Stephen’s Green, Dublin Castle, City Hall and Christchurch Cathedral, before arriving at St Patrick’s Cathedral and the General Post Office, scene of the 1916 uprising and birthplace of the Irish nation.

A guided tour from Panoramic Cork City to Blarney Castle, home to beautiful gardens and the world-famous Blarney Stone, which legend has it will impart the gift of eloquence when kissed. In Cork, see the spires of St Fin Barre’s Cathedral, the Old Courthouse, City Hall and the Church of St Anne, where visitors are able to play the eight “Bells of Shandon”.

In the evening, you may go ashore to experience Dublin’s well-earned reputation as a fun-loving city, before returning to Aegean Odyssey for an overnight stay in port.

Alternatively, A Walk Through Cork City crosses Parnell Bridge for views of City Hall, the College of Commerce and Morrison’s Island, before stopping at St Fin Barre’s Cathedral and Clarke’s Bridge, one of the most atmospheric places in the whole city.

The afternoon will then be at leisure, before an evening sail.

Or enjoy an optional full day Exploring Tipperary, beginning with a drive through County Cork to the iconic Rock of Cashel, the royal seat of the kings of Munster from the 4th century AD. Cashel’s rich history is reflected in its built heritage, from prehistoric raths (ring forts) to medieval monasteries, fortified townhouses and a Georgian Cathedral. We will then continue to Cahir Castle, before a picturesque trip along the Vee Pass for some breathtaking panoramic views.

AUGUST 3 DUBLIN, IRELAND

AUGUST 5 TRESCO, ISLES OF SCILLY

Enjoy an optional morning Coastal Drive to Malahide Castle, set in 250 acres of gardens and parkland. Dating back to the 14th century, the castle boasts a fine collection of period furniture and portraits. Then continue along the coast to the traditional 16th-century Abbey Tavern, near the ancient ruins of Howth Abbey, before returning to Aegean Odyssey for an afternoon sailing across the Irish Sea.

Located off the coast of Cornwall, Tresco is the second largest of the Isles of Scilly. Thanks to the prevailing effects of the Gulf Stream, the climate is mild, with sunshine hours generally greater than the UK average.

AUGUST 4 CARDIFF, WALES Breakfast arrival to see Cardiff ’s many attractions on your own or choose an included morning excursion: Tintern Abbey is one of the greatest monastic ruins of Wales.

Beautifully set in the Wye Valley, these enchanting 12thcentury remains must surely rank among Britain’s most atmospheric historic sites, while Monmouth is the site of the small Roman fort of Blestium and a medieval fortified bridge that is the last of its kind remaining in Britain.

Alternatively, Caerphilly Castle is the second largest castle in Europe, with a famous tower that “out-leans” Pisa. After the castle, we will return to Cardiff for a panoramic drive with sights including the castle and its surrounding estate.

Or take an optional afternoon excursion to the Edwardian Dyffryn Gardens, a Grade 1 registered garden featuring a stunning collection of intimate garden rooms, formal lawns, statuary collection and an extensive international Arboretum.

Return to Aegean Odyssey for a late afternoon sail.

Morning or afternoon excursion to the world-famous Abbey Gardens, established in the 1830s by Augustus Smith.

Something of a perennial Kew Gardens, but without the glass, Tresco seems able to shrug off Atlantic gales to host 20,000 exotic plants that would stand no chance on the nearby Cornish mainland.

Morning or afternoon at leisure, before an early evening sail.

AUGUST 6 JERSEY, CHANNEL ISLANDS Morning arrival in St Helier, the charming capital of Jersey, for visits to the island’s wonderful attractions, including the magnificent Mont Orgueil Castle, which has been guarding Jersey for over 600 years, with a choice of morning excursions:

Tiintern Abbey

St Helier and Mont Orgueil Castle. Originally built as an English stronghold in the early 13th century, since then it has witnessed many of the key events to have shaped Jersey’s history, including the last French wars and the German occupation of World War II, when it was refortified and served as a site for anti-aircraft and machine guns.

Alternatively, Fortified Jersey and the Underground Hospital will take you to the Noirmont headland gun emplacements. We will then enter the Underground Hospital for a guided tour of one of Jersey’s most important World War II landmarks.

Or Samares Manor, beginning with some wonderful coastal views over the Bay of Portelet on the way to the Noirmont German bunker, followed by the fortifications at St Brelades and Corbiere, then St Ouens Bay and Gorey, location of Mont Orgeuil. Finally, you will visit Samares Manor to explore the fabulous gardens, before returning to St Helier for an afternoon and evening at leisure, before a midnight departure.

AUGUST 7 AT SEA Corbiere

A leisurely day sailing the English Channel, giving you time to take advantage of Aegean Odyssey’s on-board facilities.

OPTIONAL EXCURSIONS GLENGARRIFF, Ireland The Kingdom of Kerry - Full Day - $65 This scenic tour from Glengarriff in West Cork to the heritage town of Kenmare begins at the worldrenowned beauty spot of Killarney National Park, where a photostop will be made at Ladies View, for some views over the Lakes of Killarney.

From here we will visit Victorian Muckross House, one of Ireland’s leading stately homes, which offers an unparalleled insight into the lifestyle of the Irish gentry and the staff who once served them.

Kerry, Ireland

A short distance from Muckross is the centre of Killarney, which features a charming landscape of lakes, wooded vales, rolling hills and green pastures, where over the centuries many monarchs, poets, artists, writers and composers have been inspired by its unique and unsurpassed beauty. We will then arrive in Kenmare, to explore this pretty and historic little Irish village.

CORK, Ireland Exploring Tipperary - Full Day - $65 This full day begins with a drive through Fermoy and Mallow before crossing into Tipperary to arrive at the Rock of Cashel, topped by the Cathedral of St Patrick, which was once the royal seat of the kings of Munster.

It was here that St Patrick converted King Aengus to Christianity in about AD432.

We will then continue to Cahir Castle, which dates mainly from the 15th century and features huge walls enclosing three wards, with the inner one guarded by a portcullis. Rooms in the keep are whitewashed and contain displays of armour and furnishings from the 16th and 17th centuries.

The day ends with a picturesque drive along the Vee Pass, which affords some breathtaking views as it zigzags up the mountain, before descending into Lismore, for a return through Tallow and Midleton to Cobh.

Major General Stephen Carr-Smith British Army, Retired Stephen Carr-Smith spent 33 years in the Army. During 1962-1982, he served 10 years in Germany at the height of the Cold War. From 19881995 he was serving in NATO, most of which was spent helping develop the “New NATO” after the demise of the Warsaw Pact and the USSR. His last appointment was as the Deputy Director General of the NATO Communications Agency in Brussels. On leaving the Army in 1995, he worked for a company providing security and mine clearance services in remote and hostile countries; was the Senior Military Advisor to an operational analysis company owned by British Aerospace; and was the Chairman of a company developing opportunities to marry-up Russian technology with western finance and production.

From 1999 to 2006, he was the Ombudsman for Estate Agents, a national appointment dealing with redress and financial compensation for buyers and sellers of residential property throughout the UK. Since 2009, he has been the Chairman of Help Moving Office, an internet company run by his second son that has now

expanded into America. He has had a number of other involvements, like being an Honorary Colonel of the First Aid Nursing Yeomanry (FANY) – an all women, uniformed volunteer body that has supported the British Army for 100 years. From 1997 to 2003, he was a Colonel Commandant of the Royal Signals. From 2003 to 2013, he was the President of the Stragglers of Asia Cricket Club, with its origins in the Punjab in the 1920s – and, accompanied by his wife, he led tours to Sri Lanka in 2004 and to India in 2007.

Professor Brian Williams University of Aberdeen

Professor Sandy Primrose MBE Biotechnologist

Brian is the Emeritus Professor of Geology at the University of Aberdeen, Scotland and currently holds adjunct professorial positions in the Universities of Manchester and Bristol in the UK, and Dublin in Ireland. He has also held university teaching positions in the Netherlands, Canada and the USA. He is a Fellow of the Geological Society of London and a Member of the Energy Institute, and has published over 100 papers and several books. He has made TV appearances in the UK, USA and Far East, and presented Radio 4 programmes for the BBC.

Sandy Primrose is a biologist by training and has degrees from the University of Strathclyde and the University of California.

After undertaking research in Australia he returned to the UK and took up lecturing positions at the universities of Edinburgh and Warwick. In 1981 he made a career change by moving to industry where he held senior management positions, first in a pharmaceutical company and later in diagnostic, food and environmental companies. After 20 years in industry he made another career change and started working as a biotechnology consultant as well as being an adviser to various UK governmental organisations (Health Protection Agency, Food Standards Agency, and Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs).

He was awarded an MBE in 2010 for services to the Food Standards Agency.

Brian gained his Ph.D. in sedimentary geology from the University of Wales far too many years ago to admit to, and in 2004 was awarded a D.Sc. degree in recognition of his global contribution to sedimentary research. He is a consultant to, and undertakes training courses for, the Oil Industry and several small geological service companies. He has lectured on Voyages to Antiquity cruises since 2011. His studies have taken him to Australia, SE Asia, Middle East, Europe and North America which has given him the opportunity to share his enthusiasm for rocks and earth processes with adult education classes, industry personnel and students alike.

Trinity College in Dublin was founded in 1592 as the ‘mother’ of a new university (University of Dublin) modelled on the collegiate system of Oxford and Cambridge – but only one college ever was built.

Sandy still consults widely as well as being Chairman of a number of small, high technology companies. He has written a number of very popular scientific textbooks but is particularly proud of his recent publication entitled Plants, Poisons and Personalities which is aimed at lay audiences.

EXCURSION INFORMATION Voyages to Antiquity’s cruises include shore excursions in most ports of call. Some ports offer multiple opportunities for sightseeing, and in these instances, Voyages to Antiquity offers carefully selected excursions – some as an alternative to the main included excursion, some at an additional cost.

WHAT TO EXPECT ON TOUR These sightseeing programmes are outstanding but can be challenging. Visits to archaeological sites require walking over uneven surfaces, up and down multiple steps, and therefore a reasonable level of fitness is recommended. Some passengers may decide to take a break on certain days and explore the environs around the port.

Look for the symbols alongside each tour description to get a good idea of what can be expected on each excursion.

Tour durations are approximate and, to be sure you get the most out of the excursion and to avoid overcrowding, the sequence of site visits and operating times may vary. The on-board staff will brief you nightly on the expected plans for the following day.

All departure times and meeting points will be advised in the Daily Journal on board. Some countries require you to carry certain documents ashore and this will be advised on board at the appropriate time. Please note that we reserve the right to change, cancel or substitute an included excursion at any time.

OUR SHORE EXCURSION TEAM Our Shore Excursion Manager and Graduate Assistants are on hand to make sure you get the most out of your shoreside experience. Informative briefings will be given regarding the excursions and ports of call, and the team will be on hand at the Reception Desk to answer any further queries you might have. During the excursions, although we endeavour to have a representative on each bus as much as possible, this cannot be guaranteed. The role of our ship’s excursion staff when ashore, is primarily to ensure the smooth operation and delivery of our excursion product in conjunction with the local guide and operator. This often means rotating between groups and working with the local guides. Kindly note that, although keen to assist when required, our team are not responsible for providing walking support or making sure everyone in the group is present.

OUR GUIDES It is one thing to see and kiss the Blarney Stone and quite another to see it in the company of a good guide who can share his/her knowledge and passion for history. All of our shore excursions feature qualified English-speaking guides who seek to enlighten your visit with their expertise.

SHOPPING From Waterford crystal in Ireland to whisky and shortbread in Scotland, the crafts of this part of the world have evolved over the centuries. While these shore excursions focus on the history, culture and archaeology of the area, some offer the

chance to visit local workshops and observe demonstrations.

Voyages to Antiquity has no connection with any shopping establishment and does not assume responsibility for purchases made ashore. We also recommend insurance on anything you choose to ship home.

TRANSPORTATION Various modes of transportation are used, depending on the excursion. Most motorcoaches are deluxe, air-conditioned vehicles unless unavailable in that port.

VISITS TO SITES/MUSEUMS On occasions, substitutions need to be made due to opening/ closing times of some sites/museums, but all possible is done to ensure schedules operate as described. If a change is made, guests will be advised with their final documents or at the shore excursion briefings on board.

Note: For passengers on Grand Voyages, availability of included and optional excursions in Greenock and London/Tilbury will be advised on board.

CLOTHING TIPS

TERMS AND CONDITIONS

Closed-toe and sturdy walking shoes are recommended for the excursions on this itinerary. Waterproof jackets and sweaters are also recommended as the weather can be very unpredictable in the regions visited. One should be prepared for all weather conditions and pack accordingly.

Itinerary Changes The cruise and tour programmes featured in this brochure are planned many months in advance. Occasionally changes have to be made to the itineraries due to circumstances beyond the control of Voyages to Antiquity.

Further details will be advised in the on-board briefings, along with weather predictions.
