This cruise to the Norwegian fjords begins with an overnight stay in the Danish capital of Copenhagen, one of the most beautiful cities in Scandinavia and recently voted one of the friendliest cities in the world. Cross the Kattegat Sea to the city of Aarhus and another Nordic capital, magnificent Oslo, a place of Viking heritage, extraordinary modern art, and medieval architecture. In Flam, enjoy a ride on the scenic railway and cruise the Sognefjord, the largest and bestknown fjord in the country. Stroll through one of Norway’s biggest ports, Bergen, then explore the spectacular landscape surrounding the village of Geiranger and the port of Alesund. With shore excursions in the cities of Stavanger and Kristiansand offering more opportunities for discovery, you will also spend a day in the Scottish capital of Edinburgh, to experience all its mains sights, before your cruise comes to an end in Tilbury, the port of London. COPENHAGEN HIGHLIGHTS & CHRISTIANSBORG PALACE (Half day, AM)
Few places have as much friendliness and joie de vivre as Copenhagen, so it’s no surprise that in recent years the city has become one of the most desirable places to live in Europe. The Danish capital is full of canals spanned by bridges, copper-roofed buildings and manicured parks, not to mention being the seat of the oldest monarchy in the world.
We begin with a stop at the famous statue of the Little Mermaid, who sits upon her rock on the waterside in Langelinie, gazing forlornly out to sea as though musing on her unrequited love. A short drive then takes you to the islet of Slotsholmen for the magnificent neo-baroque Christiansborg Palace, where the Danish Parliament and the Supreme Court convene. Among the various Royal Reception Rooms on display is the magnificent Great Hall, lavishly decorated with seventeen colourful tapestries that depict 1,100 years of Danish history, from the Viking Age to the year 2000. Also on the tiny island of Slotsholmen is the former stock exchange of Borsen – an excellent example of Dutch Renaissance architecture boasting a distinctive twisted spire of entwining dragon tails. Just across the canal is the imposing City Hall, modelled on the Tuscan Palazzo Pubblico in Siena. The brightly coloured waterfront of Nyhavn is where Hans Christian Andersen lived from 1845 to 1864. Then enjoy a stroll around the four identical 18th century palaces of Amalienborg, before returning to Aegean Odyssey.

See the famous statue of the Little Mermaid, the old Citadel, the Renaissance flourishes of Holmens Church, the magnificent Gefion fountain and the royal residence of Amalienborg Palace. King’s Square is home to the Royal Theatre and fashionable Nyhavn is the centre of Copenhagen’s pavement café culture. The Dutch Renaissance-style Rosenborg Castle was built in 1607 for Christian IV and was first opened to the public in 1838. Among the treasures you will see during your guided tour of its wellpreserved interior are the crown of Christian IV and a gem-studded sword that once belonged to Christian III. Passing the elegant Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek Museum, the imposing City Hall dates from 1905, while directly across the road is the world’s second oldest amusement park, Tivoli Gardens, home to one of the oldest wooden rollercoasters still operating today, built in 1914.
The former capital of Denmark, Roskilde has played a crucial part in Danish history and features some wonderful historic attractions such as the UNESCO World Heritage cathedral. In 1200AD, more than 3,000,000 clay bricks were used during its construction, making it the first Gothic cathedral to be built with the material anywhere in the world. Almost forty Danish monarchs are buried inside, including the Viking king Harold Bluetooth and his son Sweyn Forkbeard. Continuing to the Viking Ship Museum, among the many fascinating artefacts you will see are five longboats, known as the Skuldelev ships, which sank over a thousand years ago but survived in an impressive state of preservation, until they were recovered in 1962. The museum also has a collection of authentic replicas of Viking ships and other historic boats collected from across Scandinavia.

18 JULY AARHUS, DENMARK Founded by Vikings, Denmark’s second largest city was declared the European Capital of Culture in 2017 and is filled with world-class attractions to discover.

PANORAMIC TOUR OF AARHUS (Half day, AM) The Cathedral of Aarhus is dedicated to the Apostolic Father, Pope Clement I, an early Roman bishop who was drowned with an anchor tied to his neck by the Roman Emperor Trajan in the 1st century AD. We then continue to the old town museum of Den Gamle By, one of Denmark’s few three-star Michelin Guide attractions, which contains more than seventy-five houses, relocated from all over Denmark, as well as several permanent exhibitions, all designed to provide a unique picture of life in Denmark as it would have been during the 1700s, 1800s and 1900s. Here you may explore the homes, courtyards and shops as they might have looked in Hans Christian Andersen’s days. Take a stroll down the streets and have a chat with the local priest; visit the baker’s wife selling cakes made from traditional recipes or enjoy a relaxing carriage-ride through the town.

OLD TOWN MUSEUM & CATHEDRAL (Half day, AM) This leisurely tour begins in the modern part of the city known as “Aarhus Ø”. Among the sights we will see here are the criss-crossing points of the “Isbjerget” apartments, which have been beautifully designed to resemble icebergs breaking apart on the waterfront. Passing University Park, admire the old town museum of Den Gamle By, the world’s first open-air museum of urban history and culture, before arriving at the 15th century Brick Gothic Cathedral, which boasts the longest nave in Denmark. Stepping inside, traces of 15th century frescoes and a magnificent triptych can also be seen. Finally, enjoy a scenic drive to the forest just south of the city, for a look around the Moesgaard Museum, dedicated to archaeology and ethnography. Alongside Danish artefacts from the Stone Age, Bronze Age, Iron Age and Viking Ages, the museum has almost 50,000 pieces collected from the rest of the world, as well as an open-air display featuring reconstructed buildings from various epochs of Denmark’s past.

Randers
Take a tour of the charming 17th century Baroque castle of Clausholm, and another medieval marvel, the city of Randers. See the red brick Church of St Martin, the only church in the city to survive from the Middle Ages.
Our Scandinavian specialist Karin Jans joins us on this cruise and gives her first destination talk today as we head towards Oslo. In this talk she discusses the Norwegian fight to find their identity in connection with their independence after having been ruled by first Denmark, then Sweden for almost 500 years – through music, national costumes, literature, Arctic exploration, skiing, art and language. Throughout the voyage, Karin will give first-hand accounts of what life is like in Norway, expert tips, and commentary from the Bridge as well.
Clausholm Castle was built in the 1690s by Chancellor Conrad Reventlow and was owned by King Frederik IV from 1718 to 1730. Over the last forty years it has undergone a drastic renovation to become fully restored to its former glory as one of the most beautiful and complete Baroque monuments in Denmark. In 1994 the Danish Queen, Margrethe II, presented the castle with the Europa Nostra Prize for outstanding heritage work. During your guided tour you will see the Garden Hall, the Marble Hall, the Kings Hall and the Chapel. Some free time to explore the park and gardens will also be available. The price of this excursion already allows a credit for the unused half day excursion. This excursion has limited capacity.

Vigeland Sculpture Park, Oslo
19 JULY OSLO, NORWAY There is an unmistakable sense of energy and youthfulness about Oslo, Europe’s fastest growing capital, to go with a creative tradition encompassing the works of Munch, Ibsen and – more recently – Knausgard.

OSLO HIGHLIGHTS WITH VIKING SHIP MUSEUM (Half day, AM) Our tour begins with a panoramic drive past Akershus Fortress, the Royal Palace, Parliament and the National Theatre, on our way to visit Vigeland Sculpture Park, the largest single-artist sculpture park in the world. This unique, bizarre installation consists of more than 200 stone and bronze sculptures, completed by Gustav Vigeland between 1924 and 1943 and symbolising a different stage in mankind’s journey. Our next stop is the Holmenkollbakken ski jump. Since 1892 this awe-inspiring run has hosted an annual ski festival, multiple world championships, regular cross-country biathlons and the 1952 Winter Olympics. Finally, we visit the Viking Ship Museum, featuring remarkably well-preserved longboats taken from the burial mounds of Oseberg, Gokstad and Tune, along with exhibits both of extraordinary craftsmanship and ordinary daily life dating back more than 1,000 years.

Oslo
OSLO HIGHLIGHTS WITH OPERA HOUSE (Half day, AM) Karl Johan’s Gate, Oslo’s main street, is lined with some of the city’s most beautiful buildings. The Stortingsbygningen is Norway’s parliament and reflects an unusual synthesis of European influences in its architectural style. By contrast, the Royal Palace, still home to the reigning monarch, is a more traditional, classical affair. Moving down to the waterfront, Akershus Fortress, occupying a strategically vital position overlooking the Oslofjord, has withstood a number of sieges through the ages. We move on to the Vigeland installation in Frogner Park (more commonly referred to as the Vigeland Sculpture Park), containing more than 200 startling stone and bronze sculptures by Gustav Vigeland. Our tour concludes at Oslo’s white-marble and glass Opera House – a masterpiece of contemporary design with a roof angling gently to the ground, allowing for a comfortable walk to its summit, where the views over the waterfront prove well worth the climb – and the red brick City Hall, where the Nobel Peace Prize is awarded every December.

MUNCH & CONTEMPORARY ART MUSEUMS (Half day, PM) $79 per person

When Edvard Munch died in 1944 the remaining collection of his paintings were bequeathed to the City of Oslo. Nineteen years later the Munch Museum opened its doors in the district of Toyen, to commemorate what would have been the artist’s 100th birthday. Further works of art by Munch were later bequeathed to the city by his sister and were added to the collection in 1952. Today the Munch Museum houses more than half of Edvard Munch’s paintings in existence and the vast majority of his print motifs. Back in the city centre, the Astrup Fearnley Museum of Contemporary Art opened in 1993 and is one of Norway’s most important and extensive private collections of contemporary art. Works on permanent display include pieces by Damien Hirst, Anselm Kiefer and Jeff Koons, as well as temporary exhibitions of international art.

20 JULY KRISTIANSAND, NORWAY Norway’s southernmost city presents a splendid blend of history, tradition and natural beauty.

HIGHLIGHTS OF KRISTIANSAND (Half day, PM) Kristiansand has an enthralling old quarter with attractive wooden houses, and a lively fishing harbour and market where the daily catch is sold. Our tour takes in highlights such as the circular Christiansholm Fortress, built in 1672 on an islet 100m from the shore, now reached by a boardwalk. Only ever seeing action once, during the Napoleonic Wars, when it successfully repelled a fleet of British warships, it is today a popular venue for civic and cultural events. The open-air Vest-Agder Country Museum, more than a century old, showcases 40 historic buildings moved here from across the region to be preserved, providing an excellent insight into Norwegian daily life during the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries. We also visit the 400-year-old rose-painted Sogne Old Church, set in an area offering sensational sea views – a panoramic drive takes in some of the best, along with several picturesque fishing villages.
21 JULY STAVANGER, NORWAY The compact and attractive city of Stavanger is today known as the ‘oil capital’ of Norway, but it has a maritime heritage so fascinating and arts scene so lively that it was named European Capital of Culture in 2008.

A WALK IN THE OLD QUARTER & EPISCOPAL CHURCH (Half day, AM) The old quarter of Gamle Stavanger has more than 200 charming white cottages dating from the 18th and 19th centuries. Most of them are still privatelyowned residences, but Gamle has plenty of galleries and handicraft boutiques to explore as we stroll through its cobblestoned streets. Near the waterfront of the old quarter is the 19th century fish canning factory, now the Canning Museum. Many working-class Norwegians were employed here to clean, smoke and can freshly caught sild (sardines). During a guided tour of the museum we learn more about factory life and taste some freshly smoked fish. Another highlight is the exhibition of commercial canning labels known as “iddisar”. These miniature works of art reflect the changing artistic styles of the 19th and 20th centuries, providing a fascinating insight into how Stavanger’s identity was forged by the sea.

TRAIL OF THE VIKINGS (Half day, AM) Your first stop will be at the Archaeological Museum in the centre of Stavanger, where you will be greeted by a Viking woman dressed in period dress and jewellery. Exhibitions on display then provide a fascinating introduction to the various epochs of Rogaland’s past, from the Stone, Bronze and Viking Ages, right up to the end of the Middle Ages. After enjoying an authentic Viking snack in the café, your next stop will be the Sverd i fjell, or Swords in Stone monument. This breathtaking sculpture is comprised of three ten metre tall bronze sword statues commissioned in 1983 to commemorate the Battle of Hafrsfjord in 872, when King Harald Fairhair managed to consolidate all of Norway into one kingdom. Your scenic drive then stops at the highest point in Stavanger and passes the picturesque sandy beaches of Jaeren on the way back to Aegean Odyssey.

22 JULY FLAM, NORWAY The village of Flam is idyllically located at the end of Aurlandsfjord, a branch of the huge Sognefjord. Excursions reveal the natural majesty of its surroundings and its iconic mountain railway.

SPECTACULAR FLAM RAILWAY (Half day, AM or PM) Its route may be just twelve miles long, but the standardgauge Flam Railway is a masterpiece of engineering which climbs through the mountains to approximately 900m above sea level. To ride in its elegant wooden-panelled coaches is to experience one of the most dramatic and beautiful train journeys in the world. From the village, the tracks follow the salmon-rich Flam River, climb alongside Sognefjord and crisscross various rivers, slowing for the most scenic sections and stopping at the spectacular 100m-high Kjosfossen waterfall, allowing you a better view of the magnificent scenery. Other mesmerising sights along the way include the plunging Rjoande waterfall and snowcapped Mount Vibmesnosi. The train turns at Myrdal and, after a comfort break, follows the same route back to Flam. Tvindefossen

A WALK THROUGH HANSEATIC BERGEN (Half day, AM)
Alternatively, join us on an overview of the natural wonders of Flam region. We journey through some spectacular mountain scenery to the old Viking village of Gudvangen, overlooking the beautiful inlet of Næroyfjord, another UNESCO World Heritage Site and jointly rated the world’s number one natural heritage site by the National Geographic Society. Following salmon streams through the Næroy valley, we reach Tvindefossen, a waterfall immortalised in an 1830 painting by the Romantic artist Johan Christian Dahl, often credited as single-handedly inspiring the 19th century Norwegian tourist industry.
Arising from a strategic location within natural defences, Bergen is believed to have been founded as long ago as 1070. In the 13th century it became the nation’s capital and it remained Norway’s administrative centre until the union with Sweden in 1804, when Oslo (then Christiana) assumed primacy. Our tour begins with a guided walk through the former Hanseatic commercial district, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Here the original 14th century buildings were destroyed in a fire during the early 18th century, but were rebuilt in the same style. Then arrive at the Hanseatic exhibition of Schotstuene, comprising of four assembly rooms and two cookhouses that provide a unique insight into the lives and history of the Hanseatic people. A medieval ruin beneath Schotstuene is also visible through a newly installed glass floor.
The route then continues to Oppheim Lake, and through rustic farmland to the Stalheim Hotel, where we take high tea overlooking the Næroyvalley and the 937m-high mountain known as the Jordalsnuten (Sugar Lump). We return to Flam by way of the 19 hairpin bends of Norway’s steepest road, the Stalheimskleiven.
23 JULY BERGEN, NORWAY Surrounded by mountains and fjords, and noted for its elegant, lively-coloured townhouses, historic harbour and famous musical resident Edvard Grieg, Bergen is a Scandinavian gem.

For a fabulous alternative we will instead provide you with tickets for an independent ride on the ‘Floibanen’, Scandinavia’s only funicular railway, which will transport you from the city centre to the summit of Mount Floyen, for amazing views over Bergen and the surrounding fjords. 24 JULY HELLESYLT/GEIRANGER NORWAY Cruising the majestic fjords of western Norway, we first stop at Hellesylt for those who wish to enjoy an optional overland experience to Geiranger.

HELLESYLT TO GEIRANGER & JOSTEDALSBREEN PARK (Full day) $89 per person A tale of two villages, this relaxing tour traverses the UNESCO World Heritage region of Sunnmore en route to Geiranger. Begin in the village of Hellesylt and pass the Hellesyltfossen waterfall, followed by the deepest and clearest lake in Europe, the Hornindalsvatnet. Free time will be available in the pretty little waterside village of Stryn. Then enjoy a guided tour of the botanical garden at the nearby Jostedalsbreen National Park Centre, followed by lunch at the Hjelle Hotel, facing Oppstrynsvatn lake. The scenic route continues to the summit of Mount Dalsnibba, where you can admire the Geirangerfjord far below and the Blabreen glacier in the distance. As the road descends to the Flydalsjuvet viewpoint, a special wood and stone Fjordsetet (‘Fjord Seat’) presents the perfect Geirangerfjord view. UNESCO GEIRANGER (Half day, PM) Geirangerfjord has been rated the world’s number one natural heritage site by the National Geographic Society (alongside Næroyfjord) and, for its hypnotic beauty and unspoilt character, this glorious waterway is also recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. From the village of Geiranger, this memorable tour begins with a drive through Flydal Valley to Lake Djupvatn, which is usually beginning to thaw by the end of June, revealing sparkling blue waters. Following the mountain road, we arrive at the summit of Mount Dalsnibba, approximately 1,500m above sea level, affording views of the Blafjell glacier and Geirangerfjord far below. On the way back to Geiranger, this scenic drive also takes in the Flydalsjuvet viewpoint. The site is two-tiered, with a gangway running between plateaux. On the lower, recline for a moment in the wood and stone Fjordsetet (‘Fjord Seat’) installation, inaugurated by Queen Sonja of Norway in 2003 and positioned for the ultimate view across Geirangerfjord.

One of Norway’s most beautiful towns, Alesund is built on three islands between two fjords and is renowned for its abundance of Art Nouveau architecture, after a terrible fire swept through the settlement in 1904, leading it to be almost entirely rebuilt.
The towns of Ulvik and Eidfjord are set in the very heart of Norway’s Fjordland – Eidfjord at the eastern end of picturesque Hardangerfjord, and Ulvik at the north end of Ulvikafjord, a slender arm of the Hardangerfjord snaking its way into the high mountains. At the time of printing, Aegean Odyssey is expected to dock in Eidfjord.

ALESUND PANORAMA (Half day, AM) Admire some of the delightful “Jugendstil” or Art Nouveau buildings, then continue via a scenic route of bridges and underwater tunnels to the tiny islands of Giske and Godoy. Known as Saga Island, Giske is thought by some to be the place where the Viking Chieftain Rollo was born. One of the island’s most important landmarks is a white marble church dating from 1150, that originally belonged to the powerful local Giske family. From Giske continue to Godoy Island and the small fishing village of Alnes, on the coast of the Atlantic. In 1852 a lighthouse was built here to guide boats into the harbour. In 1876 the original tower was replaced with the current red and white striped “obelisk”. Today this protected building is one of the most visited lighthouses in Norway. On your way back to Aegean Odyssey a stop will be made at the Aksla Viewpoint for spectacular views of Alesund and the islands you have just visited, weather permitting.

SCENIC HARDANGERVIDDA & VORINGFOSS (Half day, PM) A short drive from Eidfjord, at the foot of the Voringsfossen waterfall, lies the Hardangervidda Nature Centre, a fascinating museum designed to demonstrate how different aspects of nature interact, as well as the relationship between mankind and the Norwegian landscape. In addition to the immersive exhibitions, a 225-degree panoramic movie by Norwegian film director Ivo Caprino, presents a breathtaking bird’s eye view of Hardangervidda, Hardangerfjord and the many waterfalls of the region. Our tour then climbs through the mountains to the man-made lake of Sysendamen, with stunning vistas across Hardangervidda, Norway’s largest national park, and then descends to the 200m-tall Voringsfossen, the name of which translates from Old Norse as ‘esteemed waterfall’. This glorious natural spectacle was much beloved by the composer Edvard Grieg, who kept a log cabin nearby.
27 JULY AT SEA Take in a lecture from one of Aegean Odyssey’s renowned guest speakers, pick up a good book from the well-stocked library or unwind with an indulgent treatment at the Athena Spa.

Scotland’s spectacular capital city is a thriving UNESCO World Heritage Site. Our walking tour tells its history through the elegant buildings and monuments of its oldest street, the Royal Mile, running from Edinburgh Castle to the Palace of Holyroodhouse. The natural place to begin is at the forbidding 12th century castle, set atop its rocky extinct volcano perch and affording magnificent city views. The ‘summit’ of the Royal Mile is neighbouring Castle Hill, then it is downhill to Gladstone’s Land, a superb example of an early 17th century townhouse, now restored to its former glory. Lovely Lady Stair’s House, which also dates back to the 17th century, is today home to a literary museum celebrating the works of Robert Burns, Sir Walter Scott and Robert Louis Stevenson. Our walk continues through the elegant district of Cannongate, with its quaint Tollbooth, to the majestic Palace of Holyroodhouse, the official residence of Her Majesty the Queen in Scotland. This ornate, Baroque palace is famous for its associations with Mary Queen of Scots, where within its walls unfolded many dramatic episodes of her turbulent reign. A later transfer back to the ship is available for those wishing to spend some free time in Edinburgh.
Another fortress dramatically situated atop an extinct volcano, Stirling Castle as we see it today dates from the 15th and 16th centuries, when it was the principal residence for Scotland’s monarchs, but its story goes back further, to the days of William Wallace and Robert the Bruce. A self-guided tour of this great symbol of Scottish independence takes you into the colossal medieval Great Hall, the central turreted gatehouse, the great Parliament Hall and the Royal Chapel, one of the earliest Renaissance buildings in Scotland. Excellent views of the town of Stirling and the site of the Battle of Bannockburn abound.

Voyages to Antiquity cruises include shore excursions in almost all ports of call. Some ports offer different sightseeing opportunities – in these instances, we may offer additional, optional alternatives at extra cost.

WHAT TO EXPECT Our sightseeing programmes are outstanding, but can be challenging. Visits to historic sites and natural wonders often require walking over uneven surfaces, up and down multiple steps or steep paths. Therefore a reasonable level of fitness and mobility is recommended. Some passengers may decide to take a break from excursions on more strenuous days and instead explore the environs of the port.
EXCURSIONS WITH THE EXTENSIVE WALKING SYMBOL Some excursions which feature in our programmes are not suitable for guests with any mobility restrictions. In accordance with our Fitness to Travel statement and in order to ensure Voyages to Antiquity can deliver a high quality land programme, the ship reserves the right to transfer you to an alternative excursion if they believe that your original choice is unsuitable. Please consider your fellow guests and only select this option if you are certain you are able to meet the activity level.
Look for the symbols alongside each excursion description. The key to these symbols may be found on page 4. These give a good idea of the level of walking involved. Tour durations are approximate and, to avoid overcrowding and ensure you enjoy the best experience, the sequence of site visits and operating times may vary. The staff on board Aegean Odyssey will brief you each evening on the plans for the following day and all departure times and meeting points will be advised in the Daily Journal. Some countries require you to carry certain documents ashore and this will be advised on board at the appropriate time. As a result of severe weather or unforeseen changes to opening/closing times, we reserve the right to alter, cancel or substitute an included excursion at any time. This happens extremely rarely and every reasonable 20
THE SHORE EXCURSION TEAM Our Shore Excursion Manager and Graduate Assistants are on hand to make sure you get the most out of your excursion experience. Informative briefings will be provided on the tour options and more generally on upcoming ports of call, and the team can field any further questions in the Reception area. During the excursions, we endeavour to have a representative on every coach, but this is not always possible and cannot be guaranteed. The role of the team ashore is to ensure the smooth running of the excursion in conjunction with the local guide and operator. This often means rotating between groups.
Though always keen to assist, the team therefore cannot be responsible for providing walking support or making sure that everyone in the group is present at a particular time. Please ensure that you sign up for your preferred excursions at the embarkation desk at the start of the cruise. Some excursions may operate subject to minimum numbers, and we need to know in advance how many passengers are joining each excursion in order to book coaches and guides.
CLOTHING TIPS We strongly recommend the use of sun hats and sunscreen during excursions. Sturdy walking shoes are also advised, especially when visiting archaeological sites. Please dress respectfully for visits to sites of a religious nature – generally this means that shoulders and knees should be covered. Further clothing tips will be provided at the on-board briefings, along with weather forecasts for the following day.
OUR GUIDES A good local guide, keen to share his or her knowledge and enthusiasm for a particular attraction, can transform a visit. All of our shore excursions feature qualified, highly-rated Englishspeaking guides with just this expertise and passion. SHOPPING Whilst Voyages to Antiquity shore excursions focus on the history and culture of a particular destination or attraction, some offer the chance to visit local workshops and view demonstrations of crafts and artistic techniques. Unlike other cruise operators, we have no affiliation with any shopping establishment. We do not assume responsibility for purchases made ashore and recommend insuring anything you choose to ship home. TRANSPORTATION Various modes of transportation may be used depending on the excursion. Motorcoaches are deluxe, air-conditioned vehicles unless not available in that port. Dr Irene Garcia Losquino University of Alicante Irene Garcia Losquino lectures at the University of Alicante. She received her PhD in Scandinavian Studies in 2013 from the University of Aberdeen, where she also lectured for many years. It was during her time in Scotland that Irene became interested in Celtic, Germanic and Viking cultures. She published the book The Early Runic Inscriptions: Their Western Features with the publisher Peter Lang (New York) in 2015, and, since 2014, has been working on her current research project: Vikings in Spain – Resistance, Settlement and Cross-Cultural Exchange. This project has allowed Irene to return to her home country to do research on Vikings: something she would have never dreamt about before! Irene has been lucky to be an invited researcher at the Universities of Tübingen, Stockholm and Notre Dame (EEUU), as well as a postdoctoral research fellow at the University of Uppsala, and even luckier to receive two awards for her research from the Royal Gustavus Adoplphus Academy of Sweden. While she doesn't enjoy the cold winters, her many northern travels have allowed Irene to develop insights on different approaches to Viking Studies.
Dr Declan Taggart University College Cork Declan Taggart has been interested in Viking history, literature and especially religion since he first discovered the stories of their gods Odin, Freyja and Thor as a child. Now he’s writing about those stories himself and recently published his first book How Thor Lost His Thunder, which challenges its readers to fundamentally reimagine the deity Thor, even questioning whether Thor was really

worshipped as a god of thunder. Declan now works at University College Cork in Ireland, having been lucky enough to arrive just in time to find Cork’s archaeologists uncovering evidence of the city’s Scandinavian roots. He comes to Cork via studies at the universities of Durham, York and Aberdeen and a lot of research across Scandinavia and Iceland, for which he has won awards and funding from prestigious research bodies like Britain’s Viking Society for Northern Research and Scottish Society for Northern Studies, and Sweden’s Royal Gustavus Adolphus Academy.

Karin Jans Travel Professional Karin Jans is a true Scandinavian – she was born and raised in Sweden but now lives in Copenhagen, Denmark and works most of the time along the coast of Norway! She started as a teacher, but the world of travelling and tourism was more tempting. 30 years with Scandinavian Airlines gave the opportunity to see, experience and enjoy the people, culture and history in many different parts of the world from small towns in remote areas of northern Norway and Sweden to large, crowded cities of the Far East. After studies at Roskilde University Centre outside of Copenhagen, she was ready for a new career as a licensed guide in Denmark. Today she enjoys local guiding in the Copenhagen area as well as being a tour leader on longer tours in the Scandinavian countries, especially in Norway.

Credit/debit cards on board Aegean Odyssey When activating your on-board account with a credit or debit card, please be advised that a Pre-Authorisation (hold) will be placed on your account. Although these are not actual charges, you should be aware that authorisations (holds) reduce the amount of available credit (or available funds) on your account. Final charges are not submitted to your card issuer until the day of disembarkation, which is when we will also obtain the authorisation to take monies. Some card issuers may take 10 to 14 days or more to release the authorisation (holds) from your account and these release policies vary by issuer. Please be advised that if you choose to settle your on-board balance with a different form of payment than the one you registered at the beginning of your cruise, authorisations placed on your original registered credit/ debit card will remain until the standard release period.
Wi-Fi availability Aegean Odyssey has a dedicated internet room for the use of all passengers. The ship also has wireless “hotspots” in Reception, the Observation Lounge, and the smoking area on Deck 5 aft. Passengers should note that when the ship is at sea, connectivity in these locations may be subject to fluctuation, and also that Wi-Fi is not available in your cabin at any time.
Laundry facilities Throughout your cruise your dedicated cabin steward will be available to collect and return laundry to you within a maximum of 48 hours, subject to the fees as detailed in the form found in your cabin compendium.
Whilst we understand that some passengers would like to be able to do their own laundry, we regret to advise that due to the size of Aegean Odyssey a self-service laundry room is not available. Clothes irons are also not available, or permitted, in passenger cabins for safety reasons.
ON-BOARD ADVISORIES
Swimming pool availability We understand that the use of a swimming pool is often a valued part of a holiday experience and we will always do our best to keep the pool available to passengers during our voyages. However, there are various situations that may cause us to close the pool. These include, but are not limited to, bad weather, heavy swells, quality of seawater, and the draft required for the ship to reach certain ports, especially when approaching, or cruising up or down river.
Public room availability Please be aware that on occasion certain public rooms, deck areas and dining areas may be used by special interest groups travelling on board for private functions, lectures and other events. Whilst we will always do our best to ensure that these do not conflict with more common times of regular guest access, we appreciate your understanding that on occasion this is not always possible.
Dining reservations As we offer an open-seating dining policy in both the Marco Polo Restaurant and Terrace Café, it is not possible to make individual reservations in either restaurant. We apologise for previous brochure references which incorrectly stated otherwise.

TERMS AND CONDITIONS Itinerary changes The cruise and tour programmes featured in this brochure are planned many months in advance. Occasionally changes have to be made to the itineraries due to circumstances beyond the control of Voyages to Antiquity.

The responsibility of Voyages to Antiquity and the operator of the vessel is strictly limited according to the Terms and Conditions set forth in the Passage Contract that you receive prior to embarkation. You are urged to read the Passage Contract carefully. A sample is available to be mailed on request or can be viewed and printed from the Voyages to Antiquity website at any time. Transportation on board the ship is provided solely by the ship operator and pursuant to the Passage Contract. Voyages to Antiquity reserves the right to accept or decline any person as a guest for any reason. Voyages to Antiquity shall not be responsible for any act, event or omission during the time passengers are not aboard the Voyages to Antiquity vessel. Voyages to Antiquity acts only as an agent for the supplier of off-ship services such as airlines and other off-ship transportation carriers, meals, shore excursions, accommodations, air ambulance and shoreside physicians. Guests agree not to hold Voyages to Antiquity, its owners, agents or representatives liable for any loss, injury, expense or damage which results directly or indirectly from any act or omission, whether negligent or otherwise, of any third party person or firm which is to, or does, provide goods or services in connection with the trip or any available option. Without limiting the foregoing, Voyages to Antiquity shall have no liability to passengers for the quality of services at, and the condition, cleanliness or safety of a hotel, housing facility, or conveyance, or for any transportation delay, including but not limited to liability for inconvenience, shortened holiday time, additional expenses,
or any other kind of damage. Voyages to Antiquity expressly disclaims all responsibility of any nature whatsoever for any loss, damage or injury to property or person resulting from air, rail, motorcoach or any other form of transportation other than that actually provided by the Voyages to Antiquity vessel.
Services provided by independent contractors
All shoreside tours and services described in this brochure or on the website are provided by independent contractors. Voyages to Antiquity acts solely as ticketing agent for all shoreside activities and has no legal obligation or liability of any kind to guests for acts or omissions in connection with or arising out of arrangements with independent contractors, including but not limited to airline carriers, ground/tour operators, and hotels since they are neither agents for nor employees of Voyages to Antiquity.
Guests with special needs
The tour programmes featured in this brochure include extensive sightseeing and to fully participate each guest must be reasonably fit and have no walking difficulties. Whenever possible Voyages to Antiquity will try to accommodate guests with special needs as long as the mobility issues are not an impediment to others on the guided tours. For further details, refer to the Essential Travel Information leaflet or to that section of the Voyages to Antiquity website.
Errors & omissions
While Voyages to Antiquity makes every effort to ensure the accuracy of information in this booklet, its promotions and as displayed on the website, Voyages to Antiquity reserves the right not to honour any published fares that it determines were erroneous due to printing, electronic or clerical error. Voyages to Antiquity is not responsible or liable for any typographical errors, omissions or misprints.
