a monthlong journey from europe to the southern tip of Africa november 19, 2015

YOUR JOURNEY

Day 1 Malaga Spain Fly to Malaga Airport and transfer to Aegean Odyssey. Day 2 Tangier Morocco Situated only a short distance across the Strait of Gibraltar from the shores of Europe, Tangier is a gateway to a vastly different culture. Travelling along the promenade, you will arrive at Cape Spartel Lighthouse - more than a century old it shines a warning beacon to ships sailing between the Atlantic and Mediterranean. You’ll also visit the Medina (old town), whose walls mark the line of the Roman defences, the Grand Mosque and the Petit Socco, which covers the area of the old Forum. Your guide will then walk you through the Kasbah to Mendoubia Park . Day 3 Casablanca-Rabat-Marrakesh Arrive Casablanca and see the Hassan II mosque as you depart by road for Rabat. With its stunning colonial architecture, Rabat is a true gem of a city. Your visit includes the old medina and the picturesque Kasbah of the Oudayas which you enter via the enormous and elaborately decorated 12th-century Almohad Gate.

the mountainous interior and desert south. Head inland from Las Palmas to discover Gran Canaria's spectacular but little visited interior including the Bandama Crater and the historic city of Arucas.

Colourful Marrakesh

Las Palmas spectacular landscapes

Perhaps Rabat’s most famous landmark is the well-preserved and impressive Hassan Tower. There is also time to see the Mohamed V Mausoleum, the burial place of the present King of Morocco’s father, and view the Royal Palace. Afternoon drive to Marrakesh. Day 4 Marrakesh-Agadir This morning’s tour takes in the old medina with its labyrinthine alleyways, mosques, hammams, traditional public bakeries, fondouks (old lodging houses used by the caravans) and fountains carved in wood. Then, after walking through a maze of shaded, narrow streets you emerge into the famous Djemma el-Fna Square,

Days 7/8 At sea Enjoy some sunshine or visit the Spa as the ship makes its way to the Cape Verde Islands.

Day 5 At sea Time now to relax as the ship makes it way to Las Palmas in the Canary Islands.

Days 9/10 Praia Santiago, Cape Verde Islands Praia is Cape Verde's capital and busiest city. Settlements in Praia started around 1615 and it became capital of the country in 1770. Landmarks in the colonial city centre include Albuquerque Square, the old city hall built in the 1920s, the Presidential Palace and the Monumento de Diogo Gomes, named after the Portuguese navigator who discovered Santiago in 1460. Your tour also includes Cidade Velha (old city), home to some wonderful colonial era monuments.

Day 6 Las Palmas Gran Canaria Gran Canaria is the third-largest island in the Canaries’ archipelago and is known for its dramatic variations of landscape, ranging from the green and leafy north to

where throughout the ages local people and African caravans have gathered for entertainment, celebrations, gossip and business and you can admire the famous Koutoubia Minaret, one of the masterpiece works of Islamic architecture. After lunch, depart by road for Agadir to rejoin Aegean Odyssey.

Day 17 Sao Tome & Principe Africa Along with Principe, Sao Tome is Africa’s second-smallest country. These two tiny volcanic bumps anchored off the Gabonese coast will easily win your heart with their Portuguese-Creole flavour and relaxed vibes. You start by heading to the National Museum, housed in the former St Sebastian Fortress. Next, there’s a visit to the village of Pantufo to watch “Danço Congo”, a mixture of dance and theatre that is a cultural feature of Sao Tome. Then to the Cathedral, another of Sao Tome’s landmarks, followed by a walk through the city’s streets where you can admire the beautiful architecture, much of it an inheritance from the Portuguese colonial period. Day 18 Bom Bom Island Principe Spend the day relaxing and enjoy tropical beach life at the exotically named resort of Bom Bom on the island of Principe. Bom Bom Islet is linked to the mainland of Principe by a 230-metre raised wooden walkway and with its vanilla plantations, pristine white sand beaches, old colonial

estates, lush rainforest and exotic bird life. Bom Bom is a true gem. Days 19/20 At sea Cross the Equator Enjoy the traditional maritime celebrations as Aegean Odyssey crosses the Equator. Day 21 Luanda Angola Since the Angolan Civil War ended in 2002, Luanda has undergone a renaissance of epic proportions. You will witness this transformation as you drive along Marginal Bay to the Igreje de Senhora de Nazare with its beautiful altar made of Italian rose marble. Then to the old Iron Palace “Palacio de Ferro” designed by the famous

architect Gustav Eiffel - of Tower fame, the Gothic-style church of Los Remedios, the Angolan National Museum of Anthropology and the Fortaleza de Sao Miguel. After visiting the mausoleum dedicated to Augostinho Neto, the first president of Angola, you’ll drive through “Cidade Alta”, or uptown, with its pink colonial buildings. Days 22/23 At sea Enjoy the on-board facilities as the ship makes its way to Namibia. Days 24/25 Walvis Bay Namibia Walvis Bay is situated on a wide lagoon and is home to numerous sea birds including

pelicans and flamingos. Your afternoon destination is the Namib Naukluft National Park – the largest in Africa – that encompasses part of the Namib Desert and the Naukluft mountain range. The included tour takes you to Swakopmund, the country's biggest coastal town and a mecca for Namibians on holiday. The city's German origins are quite pronounced in beautiful old German Colonial buildings. Enjoy an orientation tour of the town, with its many beautiful historical buildings dating back to the turn of the century and built in the Art Nouveau style. Overnight in Walvis Bay.

Day 26 Luderitz Arrive in Luderitz and depart for Kolmanskop, Namibia's most well-known ghost town, situated in the Spergebiet, (forbidden territory). In 1908, the railway worker Zacharias Lewala found a sparkling stone amongst the sand while he was working in a railway maintenance team near Kolmanskop. This sparked a “Diamond Rush” which caused fortune hunters to converge on the town in droves. Large, elegant houses were built and it soon resembled a German town. The drop in diamond sales after World War I resulted in the decline of Kolmanskop. Today the ghost town's crumbling ruins bear little resemblance to its former glory. Day 27 At sea A final chance to relax as you head for your final port of call, Cape Town in South Africa. Days 28-30 Cape Town South Africa Three days in Cape Town allows for plenty of time to explore this iconic city and its surroundings. No visit to Cape Town is complete without a trip up Table Mountain, the city’s most celebrated landmark, and a ride in the famous cable

car. Table Mountain gets her name from the flat-topped central massif of the mountain, which viewed from the city, is surrounded by Devil’s Peak on the left, Lion’s Head on the right and Signal Hill in the foreground. On your way back to the ship there is a short orientation tour of the city of Cape Town. During your three-day stay, you will also have time to visit Robben Island, discover the beautiful scenery of the Cape Peninsula, or enjoy the Cape Winelands. Day 31 Cape Town to London Transfer to the airport for the overnight flight back to the UK.

Brian Williams is the Emeritus Professor of Geology at the University of Aberdeen, Scotland and holds professorial positions in the Universities of Manchester, Bristol, Cork and Dublin. He is a Fellow of the Geological Society of London and a Member of the Energy Institute, and has published over 100 papers and several books. His studies have taken him around the globe and Brian will use this experience, and his enthusiasm for geology, to enhance your understanding of the many and varied natural wonders encountered along the way from Malaga to Cape Town. Lecture topics MOROCCAN LANDSCAPES: A COLLAGE OF COLOURS AND SCENIC WONDERS – An overview of the diverse landscapes of Morocco. From Tangiers, with its limestone plateaus south to Marrakesh and onwards through the High Atlas to Agadir and the Ourika Valley. THE NAMIB: THE OLDEST DESERT IN THE WORLD – The Namib is a gigantic coastal desert covering an area of over 30, 000 sq km. Namib means "vast place" and this desert complex covers Namibia, east to the Great Escarpment and stretches from Angola to the South African border, where the diamond-bearing sands are to be found. It has been an active site of wind deposition for over 60 million years, making it the oldest desert on the planet.

Andrew Schofield is an ecologist and was born in Farnborough in 1956. He has lived in Nigeria, Kenya and Tanzania and now lives in Cape Town, South Africa. Conservation has been the theme of his life with influences by many people, starting with his God father who was the National Parks field officer for Nigeria and who took him as a young boy to see the herds of Elephants in the bush to the turtles nesting on the beaches. Andrew has created wildlife reserves in areas that have not had game on them for hundreds of years. He has collected and translocated species like Elephant, Rhino, Cheetah and Lion and successfully habituated them to the new reserves and was the first person in the world to release White Lions back into the wild. Lecture topics DR DAVID LIVINGSTONE – This talk discusses the life of this larger than life missionary, explorer, man of medicine and his firm belief that Christianity and commerce would free Africa of slavery. Livingstone’s life and how he went from hero to villain and back to hero again in his remarkable life. WHITE LION – This talk is about how the genes of the White Lion were returned to the wild. White Lions have been removed from the wild since the 1920s because it was thought that they could not survive. We discuss how the team did the re-introduction, in such a way that it has now given us the opportunity of seeing the White Lion in the wild again.

HOLIDAY READING IDEAS There’s nothing like a good book to accompany you on your travels. Our associates at Blackwell’s of Oxford have put together a selection of books that we feel would provide the perfect accompaniment for this magnificent voyage.

Tahar Ben Jelloun THE BURNING ABSENCE OF LIGHT ISBN: 9780141022826 In this extraordinary non-fiction novel, based on a true story, Tahar Ben Jelloun traces the experiences of Salim who, in 1971, took part in a failed coup attempt to oust King Hassan II of Morocco. With sixty others Salim was incarcerated in a secret prison complex in the Moroccan desert: he was to remain there for nearly twenty years. In starkly eloquent, beautiful prose, Ben Jelloun relates the prisoners' experiences as they struggle to survive.

Eamonn Gearon THE SAHARA: A CULTURAL HISTORY

lost); where great battles were fought (and lost); and where great men had their reputations forged, or dashed, or sometimes both.

Iain Finlayson TANGIER: CITY OF THE DREAM

ISBN: 9781780769264

No city in the world has quite the exotic allure of Tangier. From the 17th century, it has been a place on the edge, beyond the normal disciplines of government, a city of refuge and excitements where sex is cheap, drugs are plentiful and where the outcasts of the world can breathe easily.

ISBN: 9781904955825

The largest desert in the world, the Sahara ranges from the River Nile running through Egypt and Sudan in the east, to the Atlantic coast from Morocco to Mauritania in the west; stretching from the Atlas Mountains and the shores of the Mediterranean in the north, to the fluid Sahelian fringe that delineates the desert in the south. Invaders and traders have come and gone for millennia, but the Sahara is also the place that some people call home.

Martin Meredith DIAMONDS GOLD AND WAR, THE MAKING OF SOUTH AFRICA ISBN: 9781416526377 The prize was great - not just land, but the riches it held, in the form of diamonds and gold. What became a country called South Africa was, until 1910, a vast and untamed land where great fortunes could be made (and

Alan Paton CRY, THE BELOVED COUNTRY

ISBN: 9780099766810

Tells the story of the Zulu pastor Stephen Kumalo and his son Absalom, set against the background of a land and a people riven by racial injustice. This work talks about love and hope, courage and endurance, born of the dignity of man.

Ayesha Harruna Attah SATURDAY’S SHADOWS

ISBN: 9789462380431

The protagonists of Saturday’s Shadows experience the fine line between sanity and madness as they try to find and hold onto love in the volatile world of 1990’s West Africa.
