11 dagen lang nodigen we je uit om ons multidisciplinair programma te ontdekken, zoals concerten, debatten, party’s, dans- en theatervoorstellingen. Het festival focust op de relatie tussen Gent/Vlaanderen/België/ Europa en het Zuiden, met een bijzondere klemtoon op het Afrikaanse continent.

During 11 days, we invite you to discover a programme of multi-disciplinary events featuring concerts, talks, parties, dance and theatre performances. The festival focuses on the relationship between Ghent/Flanders/ Belgium/Europe and different Southern realities, with a particular attention to the African continent.

ANNE REIJNIERS, NIZAR SALEH, PAUL SHEMISI & ROB JACOBS ‘FAIRE-PART’ FILM nl Op de vooravond van de Congolese verkiezingen werkten Congolese en Belgische cineasten aan een film over Kinshasa en haar verzet tegen de erfenissen van het kolonialisme. De vier filmmakers willen samen een verhaal vertellen, maar groeiden op aan verschillende kanten van de geschiedenis en hebben daardoor andere ideeën over hoe de film eruit moet zien. Wie moet erin voorkomen? Voor wie wordt de film gemaakt? Door artistieke performances in de openbare ruimte te filmen, schetsen ze een provocatief beeld van Kinshasa.

en On the eve of the Congolese elections, Congolese and Belgian filmmakers worked on a film about Kinshasa and its resistance against the legacies of colonialism. The film-makers want to tell a story together, but having grown up on different sides of history, they have other views on how to tell that story. Who should be in it? For whom is it made? By filming artistic performances in public space, they paint a provocative picture of Kinshasa. fr A la veille des élections congolaises, des cinéastes congolais et belges ont créé un film à propos de Kinshasa et de sa résistance contre l’héritage colonial. Les réalisateurs veulent raconter une histoire ensemble, mais avoir grandi chacun de part et d'autre de cette histoire leur confère des points de vue différents sur la façon avec laquelle la raconter. Qui y inclure? A qui cela s'adresse? En filmant des performances artistiques qui ont lieu dans l'espace public, ils brossent un portrait provoquant de Kinshasa et de ses relations avec le reste du monde.

Als grassrootsorganisatie gebruiken ze voornamelijk sociale media, waarop ze paneldiscussies, slam poetry, gesprekken met jonge denkers en professionals uit de Afrikaanse diaspora, maar ook lifestyle video’s delen. en Black speaks Back tries to develop a space to talk about race and racism in a European context. In ‘COLOURED SWAN I: Khoiswan’ verkent ze samen met performancekunstenaar Tracey Rose hun Afrikaanse roots en erfenis. Ze onderzoeken waar ze vandaag staan als gekleurde vrouwen en als afstammelingen van de Khoi-volkeren uit het zuiden van Afrika.

nl In ‘Minor Matter’ neemt choreografe Ligia Lewis zowel blackness als de black box onder de loep. Met inventiviteit, humor en tomeloze energie palmt ze samen met twee andere performers een helrode scène in. Rood, kleur van de liefde maar ook van razernij, en dat is wat hen drijft als ze dansend tegen de limieten van het podium aanschuren.

Zichzelf vooruit pushend tot de uitputting nabij is, komen ze uiteindelijk tot de essentie van het theater. En die essentie is: zwart.

Ze laat zich daarbij inspireren door een specifiek moment in de geschiedenis van haar geboorteland: in Ivoorkust werd in 1949 een groep vrouwen in elkaar geslagen terwijl ze vreedzaam protesteerden tegen de Franse kolonialisten. Wie waren deze uitzonderlijke vrouwen? Wat hebben ze ons nagelaten? En hoe kan hun moed ons inspireren? en With this piece, Beugré pays tribute to the women who were beaten up in Ivory Coast in 1949 while peacefully protesting against the French colonialists. Who were these exceptional women? What is their legacy? nl Tot waar reikt de wijsheid van een rijstkoker? In ‘Cuckoo’ deelt de ZuidKoreaanse theatermaker/componist Jaha Koo de scène met drie niet-menselijke performers: rijstkokers. De gehackte, sprekende rijstkokers – van het merk Cuckoo – zijn Koo’s gesprekspartners in pijnlijk grappige dialogen over de enorme impact van de economische crisis in Zuid-Korea. Culturele toe-eigening

Wanneer een culturele groep met macht of dominantie over een andere groep elementen uit de symbolen en cultuur van die laatste groep overneemt en aanpast om de eigen identiteit te versterken of te benadrukken, is er sprake van culturele toeeigening. Culturele toe-eigening is niet te verwarren met culturele uitwisseling, die op basis van gelijkwaardigheid gebeurt. Een voorbeeld is het gebruik van een iconische foto van de Black Panther-beweging op de affiche voor een nieuwjaarsfuif.

Kolonisatie

Kolonisatie heeft grote groepen mensen ontheemd, onderdrukt en hun rijkdommen ontvreemd. Naast materiële rijkdom is er een schat aan geschiedenis, wetenschappelijke inzichten, filosofie, kunst en literatuur verloren gegaan of gemarginaliseerd. Het moderniteitsdenken heeft het Westen gepositioneerd als superieur aan de andere, ‘primitieve’ gemeenschappen en zo (neo)koloniale praktijken gelegitimeerd onder het mom van een beschavingsproject. Dekolonisering is

de overkoepelende term voor de manieren waarop mensen die onevenwichten stukje bij beetje herstellen, gaande van de onafhankelijkheidsstrijd tot het bestrijden van hedendaags racisme en de psychologische en mentale heling van mensen die eronder gebukt gaan.

Institutioneel racisme

Institutioneel racisme verwijst naar de diepe, onbewuste en structurele vormen die racisme heeft aangenomen in uiteenlopende maatschappelijke domeinen, van de massamedia tot de arbeidsmarkt. De historische wortels ervan gaan terug tot de slavernij, de kolonisatie en de constructie van witheid en zwartheid als ‘rassen’.

Micro-agressie

Subtiel vijandig gedrag, in deze context gelinkt aan iemands raciale of etnische achtergrond. Micro-agressie gebeurt zelden bewust, maar kan irritant tot kwetsend zijn. ‘Waar kom jij echt vandaan?’ ‘Wat spreek jij goed Nederlands!’ ‘We hebben nog allochtonen nodig, kan jij helpen?’ ‘Als ik het n-woord uitspreek is dat ironisch bedoeld, dus het mag!’ De angel zit zelden in de opmerkingen zelf, wel in het wereldbeeld dat erachter steekt: de geïmpliceerde veronderstellingen over mensen van kleur.

Wit privilege

Wit privilege verwijst naar een set automatische en al dan niet bewuste voordelen die een witte huidskleur je verschaft: weten dat je op het scherm mensen zal zien zoals jezelf, dat die

positief in beeld gebracht zullen worden, dat geschiedenislessen relevant zullen zijn voor jouw gemeenschap, dat niemand je in de winkel extra in het oog houdt, dat je niet geconfronteerd wordt met raciale discriminatie op de huur- of arbeidsmarkt, en dat je het woord kunt nemen in het openbaar zonder dat je ‘voor je eigen gemeenschap spreekt’ – of nog: dat je gehoord en geïnterpreteerd wordt als een individu met een mening.

Wit schuldgevoel

Vaak ervaren witte mensen een schuldgevoel over maatschappelijk racisme.

Doordat zij zelden met raciale spanning worden geconfronteerd – in het Westen leven we in een dominant witte maatschappij – kan dat gevoel omslaan in emotionaliteit en een overmatige focus op zichzelf. Zeker in gesprekken waarin men geconfronteerd wordt met de omvang en complexiteit van het probleem en het structurele onrecht dat ermee gepaard gaat, kunnen emotionele reacties de kop opsteken: ‘wat doet me dat veel verdriet’ of ‘ik heb hier zelf toch geen schuld aan?’ in plaats van ‘wat moet er gebeuren en wat kan ik doen?’

Witte onschuld

Witte onschuld is de overtuiging dat discriminatie niet getolereerd wordt in onze maatschappij. Witheid en het Westen worden immers geassocieerd met progressieve waarden, tolerantie, gelijkheid van kansen en vrijheid van meningsuiting. Als neveneffect wordt het bestaan van discriminatie moeilijk erkend, zelfs bij bewijs van het tegendeel.

GLOSSARY

De ongelijke representatie en stem in het publieke debat van mensen van kleur vormen een blinde vlek, een onvermogen te erkennen dat racisme fundamenteel deel uitmaakt van westerse maatschappijen. Dat onvermogen wordt in stand gehouden door een tekort aan gekleurde stemmen in het publieke debat.

Cultural Appropriation

De witte redder is een zelfbevestigend en narcistisch narratief sjabloon waarin mensen van kleur in of afkomstig uit nietwesterse samenlevingen uit benarde situaties gered worden door witte mensen. Denk aan films als ‘Cry Freedom’, ‘Mississippi Burning’ of zelfs ‘12 Years a Slave’ (Bradd Pitt saves the day!), of nog: Instagram-kiekjes met witte ngo-vrijwilligers omringd door fotogeniek lachende Afrikaanse kindjes. Dichter bij huis associëren we het witte redder-syndroom met het feit dat vooral witte mannen de neiging hebben om zich uit te spreken tegen de hoofddoek van moslima’s, zonder goed te weten wat die vrouwen daar zelf over vinden.

Cultural appropriation occurs when a cultural group adopts elements of the symbols and culture of another group by its power or domination and adapts them to reinforce or accentuate its own identity.

Cultural appropriation should not be confused with cultural exchange, which takes place on the basis of equivalence. An example would be the use of an iconic photo of the Black Panther movement on a poster for a New Year party.

Decolonisation

Colonisation uprooted and oppressed large groups of people and stole their resources. In addition to material wealth, a wealth of history, scientific insights, philosophy, art and literature was lost or marginalised. The notion of modernity positioned the West as superior to other, ‘primitive’ communities and thereby gave legitimacy to (neo-)colonial practices in the guise of a development project.

Decolonisation is the umbrella term for the ways people gradually redress these imbalances, ranging from a struggle for independence to challenging contemporary racism and the psychological and mental

healing of the people on whom it has weighed.

Institutional Racism

Institutional racism refers to the deep, unconscious and structural forms that racism has assumed in various areas of society, from the mass media to the labour market. Its historical roots lie in slavery, colonisation and associating the term ‘race’ with whiteness and blackness.

Micro-Aggression

This means subtly hostile behaviour linked in this context to someone’s racial or ethnic background. Micro-aggression rarely occurs consciously, but can range from irritating to hurtful. It is exemplified by such expressions as ‘Where do you come from originally?’, ‘You speak very good English!’, ‘If I use the n-word it’s meant ironically, so it’s no problem!’ The sting is rarely in the remarks themselves, more in the worldview that lies behind them: the implied assumptions regarding people of colour.

White Privilege

White privilege refers to a set of automatic and sometimes conscious advantages provided by having white skin: knowing that you will see people like yourself on the screen, that they will be portrayed positively, that history lessons will be relevant to your community, that no one will keep an eye on you in shops, that you will not be confronted with racial discrimination on the rental and labour markets, and that you can talk in public without ‘speaking for your own

community’ – or even that you will be heard and understood as an individual with an opinion.

White Guilt

White people often experience a sense of guilt about racism in society. Since they are rarely confronted with racial tension – in the West we live in a predominantly white society – this feeling may turn into emotion and an excessive focus on the self.

Emotional reactions may occur especially in conversations where one is confronted with the scale and complexity of the problem and the built-in injustice that accompanies it: ‘How sad it makes me’ and ‘I don’t share in any of the guilt’ rather than ‘what has to happen and what can I do?’

White Innocence

White innocence is the conviction that discrimination is not tolerated in our society.

Whiteness and the West are after all associated with progressive values, tolerance, equality of opportunity and freedom of expression. A side effect of this is that discrimination is acknowledged only with difficulty even when it is proven. The unequal representation and voice of people of colour in public debate is a blind spot; there is an inability to recognise that racism is a fundamental part of Western societies. This is sustained by a lack of coloured voices in public debate. It is a vicious circle of innocence.

White Saviour Complex

The white saviour is a self-confirming and narcissistic narrative pattern in which

people of colour in or originating from nonWestern societies are saved from perilous situations by white people. It can be seen in such films as ‘Cry Freedom’, ‘Mississippi Burning’ and even ‘12 Years a Slave’ (Brad Pitt saves the day!). Also in Instagram shots of white NGO volunteers surrounded by photogenic African children. Closer to home, we associate it with the fact that it is above all white men who tend to speak out against Muslim women’s headscarves, without knowing what the women themselves think.

On parle d’appropriation culturelle quand un groupe culturel exerçant un pouvoir ou une domination sur un autre groupe reprend des éléments des symboles et de la culture de ce second groupe pour consolider ou souligner sa propre identité. Citons pour exemple l’utilisation d’une photo emblématique du mouvement Black Panther sur l’affiche d’une soirée de Nouvel An Il ne faut pas confondre « appropriation culturelle » et « échange culturel », celui-ci survenant sur un pied d’égalité.

Culpabilité blanche

Souvent, les blancs éprouvent un sentiment de culpabilité à propos du racisme social. Parce qu’ils sont rarement confrontés à la tension raciale – en Occident, nous vivons dans une société majoritairement blanche –, ce sentiment peut basculer dans l’émotivité et une attitude excessivement centrée sur soi.

A fortiori dans des conversations où l’on est confronté à l’ampleur et à la complexité du problème et à l’injustice structurelle qui y est associée, des réactions chargées d’émotion peuvent apparaître : « Comme ça me fait de la peine ! » ou « Ce n’est quand même pas

de ma faute ? » au lieu de « Que doit-il se passer, et que puis-je faire ? »

par le déficit de voix de couleur dans le débat public. Un cercle vicieux d’innocence, donc.

Décolonisation

Micro-agression

La colonisation a déplacé, opprimé et dépossédé de leurs richesses d’importants groupes d’individus. Outre la richesse matérielle, un véritable trésor d’histoire, de considérations scientifiques, de philosophie, d’art et de littérature a été perdu ou marginalisé. La pensée de l’Époque moderne a postulé que l’Occident était supérieur aux autres communautés « primitives » et ainsi légitimé des pratiques (néo-)coloniales en prétextant un projet culturel. Le terme « décolonisation » désigne les moyens par lesquels des individus remédient petit à petit à ces déséquilibres, allant de la lutte pour l’indépendance à la lutte contre le racisme contemporain et au rétablissement psychologique et mental des personnes qui en souffrent.

Innocence blanche

L’innocence blanche est la conviction selon laquelle la discrimination n’est pas tolérée dans notre société. Couleur blanche et Occident sont en effet associés à des valeurs progressistes, à la tolérance, à l’égalité des chances et à la liberté d’expression. Cela a pour effet secondaire que l’on peine à reconnaître l’existence de la discrimination, même sur preuve du contraire. La représentation et la participation inégales au débat public de personnes de couleur constitue une faiblesse, une incapacité à reconnaître que le racisme fait fondamentalement partie des sociétés occidentales. Cette incapacité est perpétuée

Comportement subtilement hostile, lié dans le présent contexte aux origines raciales ou ethniques d’un individu. La micro-agression est rarement consciente, mais peut être irritante, voire blessante. « D’où viens-tu vraiment ? » « Comme tu parles bien le français ! » « Nous avons encore besoin d’allochtones, tu peux nous aider ? » « Quand j’utilise le mot nègre, c’est ironiquement, donc j’ai le droit ! » Le dard est rarement dans les remarques mêmes, mais dans la conception du monde qui se cache derrière elles : les préjugés sur les hommes de couleur.

Privilège blanc

Le privilège blanc renvoie à un ensemble d’avantages automatiques, conscients ou non, que procure une peau blanche : savoir que l’on verra à l’écran des gens comme soi, qu’ils seront présentés de façon positive à l’image, que les cours d’histoire concerneront votre communauté, que personne ne vous surveillera dans un magasin, que vous ne serez pas confronté à la discrimination raciale sur le marché de la location ou du travail, et que vous pourrez prendre la parole en public sans que l’on vous taxe de « parler pour votre communauté » – ou encore : que vous serez entendu et considéré comme un individu doué d’opinions.

Racisme institutionnel

Le racisme institutionnel renvoie aux

formes profondes, inconscientes et structurelles que le racisme a prises dans divers domaines de la société, des médias de masse au marché du travail. Ses racines historiques remontent à l’esclavage, la colonisation et la constitution des blancs et des noirs en catégories raciales.

Syndrome du sauveur blanc

Le motif du sauveur blanc est un modèle narratif narcissique dans lequel les personnes de couleur vivant dans ou issus des sociétés non occidentales sont tirées de situations critiques par des hommes blancs. Pensons aux films ‘Cry Freedom’, ‘Mississippi Burning’ ou même ‘12 Years a Slave’ (Brad Pitt sauve la mise !), ou encore aux clichés Instagram montrant des volontaires blancs d’ONG entourés d’enfants africains photogéniques souriants. Plus près de chez nous, nous associons au syndrome du sauveur blanc la propension des hommes blancs à majoritairement s’exprimer contre le voile des musulmanes sans bien savoir ce que les femmes concernées en pensent.
