BARBARA RAES, voormalig artistiek leider van BUDA & Vooruit, is onderzoeker en oprichter van Beyond The Spoken, een werkplaats voor niet-erkend verlies. Beyond The Spoken probeert de grote en kleine ‘kantelmomenten’ in het leven erkenning te geven en begeleidt mensen tijdens die periodes van transitie.

Dat kan zowel gaan over positieve gebeurtenissen zoals de eerste stapjes van een kind als over pijnlijke momenten zoals een scheiding. De werkplek ontwikkelt met verscheidene kunstenaars rituelen op maat om deze overgangen te vieren of te verwerken en om te buigen in een duurzame herinnering.

COLIN H. VAN EECKHOUT is de stem en frontman van de Belgische post-metalband Amenra. Hun muziek over pijn en verlies gaat door merg en been. Het schrijven van muziek is voor Amenra een verwerkingsproces. Hun eigen lijden een plaats geven. Een krachtbron, een troost voor wie het nodig heeft. Hun liveshows groeiden uit tot intense en diepe belevingen. en

BARBARA RAES, in the past artistic coordinator of BUDA and Vooruit, is a researcher and the founder of Beyond the Spoken, a workshop for addressing unacknowledged loss. Beyond the Spoken attempts to give recognition to life’s turning points, big and small, and to guide people through these periods of transition. They might be positive experiences, such as a child’s first steps, or painful episodes, such as a separation. Together with different artists, the workshop develops personalised rituals for celebrating or processing these transitions and for transforming them into lasting memories.

COLIN H. VAN EECKHOUT is the voice and frontman of the Belgian post-metal band Amenra. Their music, dealing with pain and loss, cuts right to the bone. For Amenra, making music is a means of processing emotions. Of creating space for their own suffering. A source of strength and solace for those in need of it. Their live shows have come to be known as intense and profound experiences.

Voor AMEN & BEYOND nodigt Vooruit twee curatoren uit. Barbara Raes van Beyond the Spoken, een werkplaats voor niet-erkend verlies, en Colin H. Van Eeckhout, de stem van post-metal band Amenra, stellen als gastcuratoren een programma samen rond de rituelen die aan de grondslag liggen van hun werk beider werk: de dood, het brengen van offers, afscheid, zorg en pijn. Elk gaan ze er via hun eigen medium op een eigenzinnige manier mee aan de slag. Ze zijn complementair in visie en spiegelen elkaars artistiek werk. Daar waar Amenra met muziek bijna collectieve rituelen voor een groot publiek initieert, keert in de praktijk van Beyond the Spoken alles zich naar het innerlijke landschap van het individu.

In AMEN & BEYOND focussen de curatoren uiteraard op een boeiende mix van muziek en podiumkunsten als hoofdprogramma, maar hier doorheen wordt veel context en reflectie geweven via debatten, workshops, literatuur en een retraite. Vooruit is inviting two curators for AMEN & BEYOND. As guest curators, Barbara Raes from Beyond the Spoken – a workshop for unacknowledged loss – and Colin H. Van Eeckhout – the voice of post-metal band Amenra – put together a programme based on the rituals at the foundation of their respective work: death, sacrifice, the parting of ways, care and pain. Both deal with these issues in their own unique ways.

Their visions are complementary, reflecting each other’s artistic work. While Amenra performs for large audiences, initiating what could be called collective rituals, in the practice of Beyond the Spoken everything is focused on the inner world of the individual.

In AMEN & BEYOND the two curators have organised a fascinating mix of music and performance for the main programme, interwoven with plenty of context and reflection via talks, workshops, literature and a retreat about care. Stadstekenaars Vooruit aan het werk in het OPEN ATELIER

Op vraag van de curatoren schiep fotograaf Kaat Pype een beeld geïnspireerd op het programma. Ze interpreteerde het belang van rituelen anno 2019 en schetst de transitie van rituelen en kantelpunten.

Kaat Pype tast steevast de grenzen af binnen het genre van de portretfotografie.

Haar surrealistische verwijzingen tillen het portret naar een voor iedereen herkenbaar idee, begrip, situatie. Op deze manier geeft ze via een individueel portret een `gezicht` aan een veel bredere, universele ervaring.

At the request of the curators, photographer Kaat Pype created an image inspired by the programme. She looked at the importance of rituals in 2019 and captured the transition of rituals and turning points. Kaat Pype is always exploring the boundaries of portrait photography as a genre. Her surrealistic allusions elevate the portrait to a universally recognisable idea, notion or situation. In this way, through an individual portrait, she gives a face to a much broader, universal experience.

De stadstekenaars van Vooruit zullen doorheen het festival inpikken op het programma en de losgemaakte emoties vastleggen.

Zo gaat Ephameron bijvoorbeeld in dialoog met Colin H. Van Eeckhout (Amenra) en zullen ze samen hun gevoelens en gedachten verwerken in beeld, tekst, geluid, etc.

Illustratrice Shamisa Debroey vangt jou dan weer op na de voorstellingen om jouw gedachtenstroom te doorgronden. Shamisa vormt die om tot een tekening, gedicht of mijmering. De stadstekenaars zullen tien dagen hun kamp opslaan in het vernieuwde open atelier van Vooruit. Kom vooral eens langs en ontdek hun werk! All throughout the festival, Vooruit’s city drawing artists will be responding to parts of the programme and documenting the emotions that are set free. For example, Ephameron will enter into dialogue with Colin H. Van Eeckhout (Amenra) and together they will try to set down their feelings and thoughts in image, text, sound, etc.

Illustrator Shamisa Debroey will also join us after the performances to explore your thoughts together. Shamisa will then distil them it into a drawing, poem or musing. The city drawing artists will be setting up camp for ten days in Vooruit’s newly-renovated open atelier. Be sure to drop by and discover their work! After the festival, all this artistic documentation will be bundled in a magazine that you will be able to pick up at the Vooruit Café or view on our website.

Wetenschappelijk onderzoek toont aan dat we ‘s ochtends het creatiefst zijn. Kom dus vroeg in de ochtend fris en monter naar Vooruit om die theorie samen met ons uit te testen. Een namiddag vol literatuur en filosofie waarin we door afstand te nemen van verdriet, juist dichter bij ons ons verlies komen. We bespreken inzichten uit de filosofie en zoeken naar antwoorden op vragen die de literatuur oproepen. We lezen samen ‘Les Sangliers’ van Sien Volders en we verdiepen ons in gedichten over verlies en rouw. Het programma wordt verzorgd door filosoof en moreel consulent Eva Rousselle (VormingPlus Gent- Eeklo).

Zij wordt bijgestaan door Sofie Vandamme, docent aan School of Arts en oprichter van De Letterie, een nieuw letterenhuis in Oostende.

An afternoon full of literature and philosophy where, by taking distance from our sorrows, we get closer to our loss.

We will discuss insights from philosophy and search for answers to questions put forth in literature. Together we’ll read ‘Les Sangliers’ by Sien Volders and immerse ourselves in poems about loss and mourning. The programme is provided by philosopher and moral counsellor Eva Rousselle (VormingPlus Gent-Eeklo), She will be assisted by Sofie Vandamme, a teacher at the School of Arts and founder of De Letterie, a new literary organisation in Ostend.

How can we feel and understand the pain of others? nl

Peter Aers voerde talloze interviews en gesprekken met wetenschappers, dansers, futurologen, psychiaters, volwassenen en kinderen die psychisch en fysiek lijden, en kunstenaars die pijn centraal in hun werk plaatsen. Daar vloeiden enkele radicale vragen uit: hoe begrijpen we pijn?

Verandert hoe we over pijn spreken de manier waarop iemand die pijn ervaart?

Hoe kunnen we pijn vertalen naar iemand anders? Met auteurs Maggie Nelson en Susan Sontag als inspiratiebron, tracht Peter Aers deze breinkrakers te beantwoorden in een reeks van interactieve gespreksperformances.

Peter Aers carried out countless interviews and discussions with scientists, dancers, futorologists, psychiatrists, adults and children who suffer mentally and physically, and artists for whom pain is a central theme. From this he distilled some radical questions: how can we understand pain? Does the way we talk about pain affect the way we experience it? How can we translate pain from person to person?

With authors Maggie Nelson and Susan Sontag as inspiration, Aers attempts to answer these riddles in a series of interactive conversational performances.

In ‘Ain’t Done Much Healing’ toont Peter Seynaeve ons de kracht van suggestie en verbeelding. Tijdens zijn theatraal ritueel probeert Peter Seynaeve de poëzie bloot te leggen in alles dat ons omringt. Hij speelt in op onze perceptie door banale objecten een betekenis te geven die hun onmiddellijke waarde overstijgen. Door subtiele ingrepen, onverwachte combinaties en rituele handelingen wekt hij objecten uit onze dagelijkse context tot leven.

In een intieme en exclusieve setting voor vijftien mensen ontstaat zo een ontroerend verhaal over verlies en loslaten.

In ‘Ain’t Done Much Healing’ Peter Seynaeve taps into the power of suggestion and imagination. During his theatrical ritual Seynaeve attempts to expose the poetry that surrounds everything around us. He plays with our perceptions by giving banal objects a significance that transcends their immediate value. With subtle interventions, unexpected combinations and ritual acts, he brings objects from our everyday environment to life. In an intimate and exclusive setting for fifteen people, a moving story emerges about loss and letting go.

Wat gebeurt er wanneer intense dans en post-metal elkaar ontmoeten? Kom en ontdek het tijdens de heftige post-metal-dance-performance ‘This Kind of Bird Flies Backwards’ waarin de choreografie van de Poolse danseres Natalia Pieczuro de muziek ontmoet van Colin H. Van Eeckhout (de stem van Amenra / CHVE), Mathieu Vandekerckhove (gitarist Amenra / Syndrome) en Bjørn Lescouhier (Regression). De duistere danssolo is geïnspireerd op verhalen van mensen die goesting hebben om te leven. Die niet bang zijn om met vallen en opstaan hun doel te bereiken. Mensen die openstaan voor de kracht van meeslepende gevoelens tijdens extreme situaties. “Moments that make you feel alive”, zegt Natalia Pieczuro zelf.

‘In Your Hands’ is a no-experience-required but experience-very-welcome knitting workshop. It is a space for collaborative craft practice, intergenerational skills exchange and a listening practice connected to labour with a feminine flavour. It’s about creating a space to listen to unfamiliar or hidden stories and histories of female labour (by their nature undervalued and under-represented) while engaging in a craft practice that enjoys a similar station. Each edition will have a different speaker, who will bring with them their own story and choice of refreshments to share. For Amen and Beyond, Barbara Raes will invite a guest, whom we will announce later. In short, come for the knitting, stay for the story.

For this work, Natalia Pieczuro took as an inspiration “moments when we feel we are alive” and “different extremes”.

The starting point of the work was her own experiences, as well as “stories” of others, of people who are not afraid of being alive. The sound created by Colin H. van Eeckhout (Amenra / CHVE), Bjørn Lescouhier (Regression) and Mathieu Vandekerckhove (Amenra / Syndrome), offers an accompaniment that vibrates to the core. A pure, raw and sincere show.

De Italiaanse beeldend kunstenaar en performer Francesca Grilli is momenteel via workshops bezig met de onderzoeksfase van haar nieuwe performance ‘Sparks of Resistance’. Centraal in Grilli’s werk staat het worstelen van de mens met tijd en verval. Ze zoekt naar beelden die onze standaarden van fantasie en doemdenken slopen om zo nieuwe inzichten en visies tot leven te laten komen. Twee dagen lang organiseert Grilli workshops voor kinderen als onderdeel van haar creatieproces voor ‘Sparks of Resistance’. Doel van haar nieuwe performance is de toekomst op een speelse manier in handen leggen van puur en volkomen onbeïnvloed gedachtengoed zoals alleen kinderen dat nog hebben. Wat brengt de toekomst? Wat willen nieuwe generaties? Een klein moment van rebellie, maar vooral een sprankeltje hoop.

The Italian fine artist and performer Francesca Grilli is currently organising workshops as part of the research phase of her new performance ‘Sparks of Resistance’. Central to Grilli’s work is

humankind’s wrestling with time and decay.

She seeks out images that knock down our established habits of imagination and pessimistic thinking to leave room for new insights and visions to blossom. For two days, Grilli will organise workshops for children as part of her creative process for ‘Sparks of Resistance’. The aim of her new performance is to playfully hand over the future to pure and completely impartial thinking, like only kids are capable of. What will the future bring? What do new generations want? A small moment of rebellion, but most of all a sparkle of hope.

OLIVIER DE SAGAZAN In ‘Transfiguration’ wil beeldend kunstenaar Olivier De Sagazan zijn werk tot leven wekken. Hij begraaft, wentelt, draait en keert zich volledig in zijn klei. Hij wordt één met zijn eigen beeld en transformeert zo in een levend beeldhouwwerk. Op een gegeven moment verliest hij zijn zicht door de laag klei en verf waardoor hij krult en klauwt over scène. Eens als dier, dan weer als mens om daarna weer te transformeren in een voorwerp. Wees getuige van een innige strijd en zoektocht naar een eigen identiteit. ?ALOS ?Alos zal haar nieuwe LP/performance/ ritueel ‘The Chaos Awakening’ voorstellen. ?Alos weigert een gender aan te nemen, bant elke religie en verenigt muziek, performance, dans, politieke statements, feminisme en anarchie in haar avant-garde doom-metal performances. ?Alos jaagt je via mystiek de stuipen op het lijf. OLIVIER DE SAGAZAN The performance ‘Transfiguration’ is the story of the sculptor ‘s unfulfilled desire to imbue his creation with life. In a gesture of despair, he enters in his material clay to give him his life. He sculpts clay on his head, burying himself in the material, eradicating his identity and becoming a living work of art, somewhere between marionette and puppeteer. ?ALOS ?Alos is coming to present her new LP/performance/ritual ‘The Chaos Awakening’. ?Alos associates with no particular gender, rejects religion and unites music, performance, dance, political statements, feminism and anarchy in her avant-garde doom-metal performances.

BODY OF REVERBS Tattoo-artist / geluidskunstenaar Michele Servadio is sinds 2014 de bezieler van BODY OF REVERBS waarin hij de kunst van het tatoeëren omzet in geluid. Hij tatoeëert live on stage waarna een geluidskunstenaar het geluid van de naalden opneemt en daarna door zijn effectpedalen en synths haalt. Een intens ritueel voor het leven opgebouwd rond noisy electronica, tatoeages en pijn.

Eten is een manier om verhalen te vertellen.

BODY OF REVERBS Since 2014, tattoo and sound artist Michele Servadio has been the driving force behind BODY OF REVERBS, where he transforms the art of tattooing into sound. He tattoos live on stage, after which a sound artist takes the recorded sound of the needles and runs it through his effects pedals and synths. An intense ritual built around noisey electronica, tattoos and pain.

Amid nature and seclusion, ‘Beyond Care’ offers the time and space to look at your own caregiving from a fresh perspective.

The practices of the participants may vary hugely. Some work in healthcare as caregivers, coaches or healers. Others are active in the arts and spend their time creating or researching. All are, in one way or another, occupied with the art of healing. In the context of this retreat, all these extraordinary carers will make a shared journey through the realm of art, well-being and ritual.

Of zijn mensen uit de welzijnssector en de zorg dat? Geneeskunst is een inspiratiedag met lezingen, wandelingen, performances en visualisaties om ervaringen uit te wisselen rond nieuwe rituele praktijken met betrekking tot de zorgsector.

Our lives are filled with conscious and unconscious rituals. Some rituals get their power from a rich history, while others grow out of contemporary needs or desires. How can rituals, old and new, contribute to our well-being and our health in 2019? Are artists the new ritual makers?

Or do people from the care and well-being sector fulfil this role? ‘Geneeskunst’ (‘the art of healing’) is a day of inspiration, with talks, walks, performances and visualisations to stimulate an exchange around the topic of new ritual practices as they relate to the care sector.

Voor ‘Celestial Sorrow’ werkt Meg Stuart voor het eerst samen met de Indonesische beeldende kunstenaar Jompet Kuswidananto. Vertrekkend vanuit collectieve herinneringen en fictieve trauma’s creëert het duo een wereld van licht en beweging, bewoond door drie performers en twee muzikanten. Samen wagen ze zich aan een artistieke ontdekkingstocht doorheen imaginaire en onzichtbare ruimtes, en de stemmen die ze tot leven wekken.

‘Jerk’ is an imaginary reconstruction of crimes committed by the American serial killer Dean Corll. The performance shamelessly combines sexuality, violence and gruesome aesthetics in a callback to traditional puppet shows, in which puppets were used to portray violent and unlawful characters. The story, despite its realism, seems to border on the surreal.

The French theatremaker Gisèle Vienne plays with the tension between fantasy, reality and our perception.

To realise this ritual they are working together with Indonesian artist Toni Kanwa Adikusumah. In his practice, Toni is committed to reconciling art and spirituality. From 16 to 25 May, Vooruit will be home to one of Toni’s sculptures, which will offer a place for visitors to physically place their sorrows, big and small. On 25 May, the sculpture will be moved to the Citadelpark for a big burning ceremony, with live music by Amenra.

Exclusief voor AMEN & BEYOND creëren Amenra en Beyond The Spoken samen een vuurritueel voor alle niet erkende verlies van Gent. Al jaren verzamelt Beyond The Spoken het kleine en grote verlies van plekken of steden (Brussel, Oostende, Brugge). Deze collectie krijgt een metaforisch beeld en laat mensen toe om afscheid te nemen van datgene wat ze niet kunnen loslaten (een scheiding, het verlaten van een land, het verliezen van een vriendschap, etc...). Voor dit ritueel werken ze samen met Toni Kanwa Adikusumah, een Indonesisch kunstenaar die de verbinding tussen spiritualiteit en kunst ten volle in zijn praktijk doortrekt. Van 16 tot 25 zal in Vooruit een sculptuur van Toni Kanwa Adikusumah staan waar iedereen zijn kleine en grote verdrieten in kan achterlaten. Op 25 mei wordt de sculptuur verplaatst naar de site van het citadelpark voor een groot verbrandingsritueel met live muziek van Amenra.

‘Jerk’ is een denkbeeldige reconstructie van misdaden gepleegd door de Amerikaanse seriemoordenaar Dean Corll. De voorstelling vermengt schaamteloos seksualiteit, geweld en gore esthetiek en grijpt zo terug naar het handpoppenrepertoire, de traditionele vorm die werd gebruikt om gewelddadige en ongeoorloofde personen te vertolken.

Het verhaal, hoe realistisch ook, lijkt aan het onrealisme te grenzen. De Franse theatermaker Gisèle Vienne speelt met de spanning tussen fantasie, werkelijkheid en onze waarneming.
