VOLUNTEER HIGHLIGHT
Who would you like to highlight and what is their volunteer role?
Derek volunteers with the Robert Burns Birthplace Museum.
What impact has this volunteer had?
Derek started volunteering with us around six months ago and we can’t remember what it was like before! He has quickly become a valued member of our team and assists with all manner of tasks, from helping with deliveries of stock for our gift shop to meeting and greeting our visitors from all over the world No job is too small and his enthusiasm is truly infectious, we all look forward to our shifts with Derek!
“My favourite thing about volunteeri museum is getting to meet different and making new friends. I love gettin all the photographs and original thin when Burns was alive and I am really happy helping out here. I really enjoy learning about Burns and would love to learn more about Burns House and what life was like there. I enjoy volunteering with my support worker and visiting the cafe - my favourite place in the museum!“

Who would you like to highlight and what is their volunteer role?
DJ is a volunteer coach at LA Bowl in Ayr
What is this volunteer’s story?
DJ first started volunteering as part of his Bronze Duke of Edinburgh award all the way back in 2018. As a volunteer at LA Bowl in Ayr, DJ has been put through his Level 1 and 2 Coaching. He supports young people in developing their skills and preparing them for competitions through various games and activities. DJ has also volunteered with a range of other local groups including The Ark, RoomSixty, and as a Saltire Ambassador for VASA He is currently a student at UWS in Ayr
“I enjoy giving to others and meeting different people. I used to only care about myself, but now I’m invested in helping others and supporting their progress. People should volunteer because you gain experience which is great for your CV, and it helps you grow into a new person. It makes me happy to be a part of something bigger than myself. If you are autistic like me, volunteering can bring out the best version of yourself, engage you in hobbies and find community.”

“My life has been greatly enhanced by volunteering and I couldn’t imagine not doing it Volunteering gives me such a positive feeling I have met people from all over the world and have built relationships with people living locally. I wish people knew how much joy there is in volunteering, and how much it can teach you about listening, being kind and not judging others.”
