Dear Volker What a pleasant way to begin the day -- I have now printed all the reviews you wrote of my work [and also your picture -- a good face]. I had no idea you had payed such close attention to what I write. I will slowly decipher the reviews [with the help of my wife Erica who is fluent in German -- Vienna born]. I hope some day we will have the pleasure of meeting and having a beer together and remember the good old once upon a time – in friendship Raymond

Fri, 5 Oct 2001 18:16:55 EDT > Dear volker, hope your fine I was just going to write - yu must be psychic - yesterday I got the two pieces you sent -- it took that long to reach me because you sent them to Buffalo at the unviersity - I no longer live in Buffalo - I live in California -- I was fed up with cacademia so I retired two years ago - did I forget to tell you -[ ] who is Jane whose link I sent you -- I don't know any janes -- the last one I knew left without an address I appreciate that you think of me and my work in terms of songs – speaking of music - there is a guy in Berlin [theater guy] who adapted Der Pelz Meine Tante Rachel to a kind of musical - he recites the text while The Doors {I think it is The Doors] play and sing - not bad get in touch with him -- here is his email [ ] his name is Ari - I forget hsi last name – strange guy - I first met him in Vienna - he came from berlin jus tto meet me while I was partcipating in a beckett conference - then I saw him again in Berlin last june [he always gives me alittle gife Ashish - the best - can you believe that] anyway - get in touch with him - ask him for a copy of the casette -- he was trying to have it broadcast on the radio - I think he did in fact [ ] these days the unreal begins where the spectacle ends maybe humanity is not worth saving - or it shoudl go back to the monkey stage -- but what do I know of humanity - I could tell you more about red radishes –

the day Beckett died he said - I shall die without enthusiasm - and then he yawned – > all the best more soon raymond P.S. the piece in Jazztekik I had seen before - I even have the magazine – you must have sent it to me.

Tue, 9 Oct 2001 18:47:32 EDT Dear Volker Yes Federman from A to X-X-X-X eXposed Federman's address! I read [and reread] the pieces you sent with pleasure. What you caught in your writing about Federman is the rhythm of Federman's writing. Do get in touch with Ari - strange guy - but I think serious in what he does -- and I rather like his recording. Good contact to have. Yes I participated in the Nauman/Beckett conference in Vienna. It was there that with we performed The whole thing's coming out of the dark. We had recorded the CD in Mßnchenh a few months earlier, but in Vienna we performed live. Of course I know James Knowlson. In fact he was also in Vienna. And I know his biography of Beckett well [I may even be mentioned in it]. An old friend Jim but a lousy writer. The biogrpahy is full of interesting things, but it is so badly written – how can one write a bout beckett badly. I am sorry to ahve to say this of the work of a good friend - but not all good scholars are good writers. I don't know Le Brocquy, but I am a good friend of Avigdor Arikha, and I own [given to me by Arikha] a beautiful portrait of Sam. [ ] you can also hear my voice at EPC [Electronic Poetry Center] at -- http://wings.buffalo.edu/epc/authors/federman/ Maybe it is time for you to submit again what you wrote before about federman [have you ever sent me Surf - S@mple - M@nipul@te?] since Federman has several new books out in Germany Have seen the new books Weidler Verlag has published these past few months see -- www.weidler-verlag.de

Loose Shoes 99 hand-written poems Amer Eldorado Amer Eldorado2/001 Amer Eldorado Magma and soon to be released Mentir ou Mourir [email correspondance] et soon after that L'Extatique de Jule & Juliette [cul-but poetique] and later Views-Inter-Views : Repetitions & Contradictions oh and in between Weidler Verlag -- or rather the responsable for all that is Reinhard Krueger [here is a man you should meet in Berlin] the editor - will also published Federman/Tashima Correspondence [l957-1960] - an historical document so yu se eyou have much to read and hopefully all that will inspire you to write some more about Federman before he goes back to his planet -things are okay with us -- Erica and I are leaving in the morning for chicago where I will give a reading in celebration of the 30th anniversary of the publication of my first novel - Double or Nothing [Swallow Press, Chicago, l971] - which is still alive and in print. Then on to Buffalo for a couple of days for another reading and to see friends --

hopefully on the way we will nto become Human Projectiles -Fondly Raymond

Wed, 17 Oct 2001 13:12:05 EDT dear volker just back from chicago and buffalo where the readings went extremely well - I was in great form - but I came back yesterday with a lousy cold -- I had a terrible night thinking tha tmaybe I had been poisoned by anthrax -- everybody in america now lives in fear of anthrax oh well hang on to your beckett books they are becoming more and more valuable - and so are federman books - the other day I was surfing and came across federman books being sold by abebooks.com -- some of them sell for a lot of money - -one of these days I'll have to sign all your federman books to make them even more valuable – ah duel -- a very rare book now - I have only two copies of it. certainly knowlson's book is much better than that horrible bair book. yes it's time someone writes a major article about federman in germany - youre the perfect person - go for it - this way I'll become famous and maybe even rich -did I mentioned to you that the theater/radioplay director Norbert Schaeffer [who directed 3 federman radioplays for the bayerischer runfunk] has written a stage version of Double or Nothing and hopes to get it staged soon. That would be great well that's all the news for now more soon raymond

Mon, 22 Oct 2001 11:50:10 EDT it may not mean anything to you volker but yesterday the san diego chargers beat the denver broncos -- yes I am a fanatic of american football – I feel much better. I shall survive again. Beckett had one moment of weakness in his life - he once told me - that's when he wrote a letter to the editors of the London Times [some critic had called Beckett a charlatan and wondered what "Mister Beckett would have to say to that" - and beckett wrote: I have nothing intelligible to say on the subject -- but the fact of answering that dumb critic was a weakness. Interesting that the Rachel/Doors-thing will be broadcast. [..] Great idea -- a interview-collage mixing all the genres that federman has been abusing. letting pieces of poems or fiction or critifiction answer whatever questions the interviewer will ask go ahead begin more soon raymond

Scraps of German … & Raymond Federman Fri, 13 Jul 2007 10:33:17 +0200 From: Volker Frick <frick@uni-muenster.de> Dear Mark Nixon, a few days ago I read your „Scraps Of German - Samuel Beckett reading German Literature“ [Samuel Beckett today 16.2006, p. 259-82]. Under 'Works Cited' I found: * Graver, Lawrence, and Raymond Federmann, eds., Samuel Beckett: The Critical Heritage, (London: Routledge and Kegan Paul, 1979). No surprise: in the text itself also I read the name Raymond Federmann. So I want to send you a link to a text from this great author [not only a fine romancier but also a non-cacademic buddy who did a lot of great work about sam beckett, as you know]: http://www.epc.buffalo.edu/authors/federman/shoes/corrections.html where you can read the following lines: „Articles in Die Zeit and in Der Spiegel about author Raymond Federman [...] consistently spells his name Federmann. When informed of the error concerning the misspelling of his name, Mister Federman shrugged his shoulders and said: The Germans always do that to my name. It's not serious. More serious, he added, is the error SS Heinrichsohn made, on August 19, 1942, in the telex he addressed to Oberführer Eichmann and to the Commandant of Auschwitz, upon the departure of Convoy 21 from Paris (destination Auschwitz). In that telex, which listed the names and dates of birth of all the children (Convoy 21 left with 373 children under the age of 16 -- 162 boys, 199 girls; the sex of 12 children could not be determined according to SS Herinrichsohn's telex), the date of birth of my sisters were incorrectly given. The date of birth for my sister Sarah was given as 21/10/25, whereas in fact she was born 21/10/26; the date of birth for my sister Jacqueline was given as 30/9/28, whereas in fact she was born 30/8/29.

When asked if he intended to have these administrative errors corrected, Mister Federman replied: Don't you think it's a bit late for that?“ no doubt: I'm only a reader, lots of laughs, Volker Frick

Dear Volker Frick Thank you for your letter - indeed, I noticed this embarrassing error when I received the publication, and it has already been pointed out to me by two people. I will have to apologise to Raymond Federman when i see him next! with best wishes Mark

books by Raymond FEDERMAN

Hey listen! Would you mind if I told this part of the story myself? I mean directly. Because you see now we are coming to the climax, I mean the real juicy part, and it would be better, and also much more suspenseful if I were to speak directly – first-hand! I don’t mind (I told him, when the time comes). But can you pull it off? Can you handle it by yourself? I mean, remember, I am the one who is supposed to recite this tale second-hand. And besides, it is not legal, you know! What will our listeners say when they discover I’ve handed you the narrative voice? Please let me try! Just for a while. For this one part. It really means a lot to me! You’ll see, I’ll do it right! Okay! see 1976 | 5 p. 85
