From the Bishop: Celebrating the Year of Consecrated Life The Church is currently celebrating the Year of Consecrated Life, a special year designated by Pope Francis to recognize the many contributions of the consecrated religious orders which serve the mission of the Church around the world. This Year is not only significant for the men and women who belong to these orders, but for all Catholics. Each of us benefits from the vocation of consecrated religious members and the work they do, whether receiving the benefits of their prayers, attending their schools, receiving care at their hospitals, and much more.

In particular, Pope Francis has noted that there are three “aims” of this Year.

Look to the Past with Gratitude In our prayer life, the virtue of gratitude is a sign of spiritual maturity. Petition is also important, as it is very childlike. It is not as if we stop “asking” and relying upon our loving Heavenly Father for all things. However, just as a young child is taught to ask (petition) for things, so too is the child taught to say thank you. As time moves on and the child matures, no longer does he or she need to be reminded, but “thank you” becomes a natural response. So too must those called to the Consecrated Life.

Our “thank you” must be incorporated, not only during the special year, but also throughout one’s own life. So too must all Catholics, when thinking of the great benefits received from others living their vocations. Note the benefits received from two very important communities in the Diocese of Gallup: the Franciscans and the Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament.

The founders of these communities, St. Francis and St. Katharine Drexel, each came from wealthy families, but both in their own way were detached from earthly treasures. Saint Francis declared, in the memorable scene in the center of Assisi, “I have called you my father on earth; from this point on I desire to say only ‘Our Father who art in Heaven’.” Saint Katharine Drexel used her inheritance to build and fund schools that ministered to those on the margins

of society: African Americans and Native Americans.

Unlike the wealthy young man who was “owned” by his many possessions, these heroes of our faith were able to detach themselves of earthly treasures, in order that they might serve Christ, who is especially present in the poor.

Live the present with passion Whether we are consecrated religious or not, we must ask ourselves often: “Am I open to being challenged by the Gospel?” For those who are members of religious orders, note what Pope Francis asks in his letter: “Are our ministries, our works and our presence consonant with what the Spirit asked of our founders and foundresses? Are they suitable for carrying out today, in society and the Church, those same ministries and works? Do we have the same passion for our people, are we close to them to the point of sharing in their joys and sorrows, thus truly understanding their needs and helping to respond to them?”

For all Catholics, these words ring true as well. We must ask ourselves everyday: “Is Jesus really our first and only love?” By putting Christ first, only then can we truly live our lives with passion, no matter the vocation.

Embrace the future with hope Pope Francis says in his letter: “We

all know the difficulties which the various forms of consecrated life are currently experiencing: decreasing vocations and aging members, particularly in the Western world; economic problems stemming from the global financial crisis; issues of internationalization and globalization; the threats posed by relativism and a sense of isolation and social irrelevance...” This can be felt by all Catholics.

The idea that one’s faith or way of life is being challenged or becoming irrelevant is not solely felt by members of religious orders.

But remember, first and foremost, we are a people of hope, and our hope is in the Lord who made Heaven and Earth.

The virtue of hope allows us to look to the future with great confidence. Confidence that just as the Lord called men and women to leave all behind and follow him in a particular way of life, he will continue to inspire the future generation of the Church to do the same.

To be men and women of great faith and hope, inspired by the Holy Spirit to do beautiful things, all for Jesus Christ. It is a call to generosity, to give of one’s own life, and to prefer nothing to the love of Christ.

Finally, as Pope Francis has entrusted the Year of Consecrated Life to the Blessed Virgin Mary, “the Virgin of listening and contemplation, the first disciple of her beloved Son”, so too entrust your life to her (after the pattern of the beloved Pope John Paul II), who will lead you into a deeper and more intimate relationship with her Son.

Diocese Releases List of Credibly Accused Clergy Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ Jesus: When I became the Bishop of the Diocese of Gallup, I committed to ensuring that the children in this Diocese and in the Parishes, Missions or Schools that operate within the Diocese were protected. The Diocese published names of those working within the Diocese against whom there were credible allegations of sexual abuse of a minor. In my ongoing commitment to protection of children and to further my goal of transparency within this Diocese, we have determined that there are additional priests against whom there have been credible allegations of child abuse who worked in various places within the Diocese. I have sent letters to each Parish, Mission or School within the territory of the Diocese of Gallup where each of the priests or others served advising them that there was a priest who was ministering in that Parish, Mission or School against whom we have determined there were credible allegations of sexual abuse of a minor.

As part of my ongoing commitment, we are now putting all the names, places and dates of service of credibly accused priests here on the Diocese’s website. This list will include the priests previously named as well as those who are being named now.

The publication of these additional names does not mean that our vigilance and continued investigation ends here. The investigations remain ongoing. The survivors who have come forward should be commended for their bravery and courage, and I express my deepest apologies for the actions of those who violated the trust of the survivors and the parishioners within the Diocese by committing these terrible acts. I reaffirm my commitment to protect our children and my commitment to continue to assist those who have been harmed.

Diocesan Features Navajo, NM Parishioners Commemorate 50th Anniversary St. Berard Parish at Navajo, NM is just large enough to seat a regular Sunday crowd, but people were packed shoulder-to-shoulder for the very special Mass in honor of the church’s 50th anniversary.

Families from both St. Berard and its mission church of St. Francis in Sawmill gathered together to attend the Mass celebrated by Bishop Wall and concelebrated by several Franciscan priests including Fr. Gilbert Schneider. Two Native American deacons also assisted at the Mass.

Br. Maynard Shurley, OFM, blessed the church and the congregation before the Mass began, using Navajo incense.

Two nuns – Srs. Brenner, SBS, and Sr. Maria Magdalena, SC – bustled about making sure that the food for the dinner after Mass was properly prepared and presented; that the ushers had the right amount of baskets; and that everyone had a seat for Mass.

“It is our great prayer and hope that this event, this beautiful celebration, will truly be a time of growth and renewal for our people and our parish,” Fr. Gilbert Schneider declared to the congregation.

Fr. Schneider is the pastor of Our Lady of the Blessed Sacrament parish in Ft. Defiance, AZ, but his duties have also included saying Mass at St. Berard and St. Francis churches for the past 11 years. Day-to-day, Srs. Brenner and Magdalena oversee the religious instruction of the parishioners and other church affairs.

Sr. Brenner has lived at Navajo for three years, and cares for the people there as if they were her own family. It’s difficult to take a spare moment to talk to her during the dinner after the Mass – she spends most of the evening moving among the tables, stopping to speak to each family. She knows their names, their personalities, their backgrounds, and happily speaks with each group before moving on.

“They’re so open and caring, so just being with them, I feel very close to all of them,” she says. “You know, I get as much from them as they get from me – these are people of God.” Rita Bia is one of those “people of God” Sr. Brenner refers to. Raised in Sawmill, AZ and a member of St. Francis church for most of her life, she volunteers at events for both churches throughout the year. Eventually she became a certified religious instructor, and

describes how she enjoys teaching her faith to her people.

With Bia, too, it’s tough to grab a few moments. She spends the evening talking and laughing with people as she stands behind the food line serving dinner, and eventually divides a giant cake into smaller pieces, making sure there is enough for everyone.

“When we all come together like this, it works,” Bia says, in between handing out slices of cake. “Even our elderly, their kids, they’re all here. You know each one by name.

And all the Sisters and the Fathers that come through here, even the Deacons, to teach us our Faith – I’m grateful for them.”

Sawmill was at one point the main parish.

The town was established and named after a local lumber mill which functioned as the main economy for the town, and St. Francis church was built to serve the people there in 1953. After just five years, the mill was moved to Navajo, and most of the people went with it. St. Berard was built in 1964 and is now the main church, with Sawmill as a mission.

Despite the population movements and fifty years, the people of Navajo and Sawmill are as close as ever. They are more than a community – as both Sr. Brenner and Bia say, and as any observer can see – they are a family.

Snowflake, AZ Priest Reflects on Visit With Pope Francis Between September 22 and 26, I made a quick visit to Rome where I had an extraordinary opportunity to visit with Pope Francis. I should clarify that my participation in all of this was purely coincidental. That is, entirely unmerited and unexpected.

Javier Cámara has been a journalist for an important secular newspaper of the city of Córdoba and the center of Argentina for many years now but long before that (since 1982, when he was 12) has been a “spiritual son” and dear friend of mine. The same can be said of Monica, his wife, and as all who have visited me in Córdoba know, their two families quickly became my “home away from home” since I arrived in that city.

When Pope Francis was elected, Javier realized that the city of Córdoba had been his home on two occasions and thought it would be interesting to write a book about it. After obtaining the mail of the Pope’s secretary through the archbishop of Córdoba, he sent a list of questions to clarify different points for his research. To his surprise one day the Pope called Javier by phone and announced himself as “Jorge Bergoglio”. Javier thought it was his brother (also named Jorge)

joking but realized soon that it was really the Pope who wanted to know what the book was about and when Javier wanted him to call him to answer the questions. So, over a six month period, several phone calls were made, and Javier was able to complete the book, which, although it deals with his whole life, focused principally on his time in Córdoba and its importance to understand him. It really is a good book (Javier sent me a manuscript when he finished it some weeks ago).

Javier arranged for a meeting with the Pope to present to him the book personally and months ago asked if I would accompany him. After discussing it with my bishop I said yes, but was frankly afraid it meant another week out of the parish. I already had too many Mission appeals in different parts of the country scheduled since I thought I would still be in my small parish in Alpine. As it turned out, on Aug. 5th, the feast of Our Lady of the Snow (title of my parish), the date of the audience was confirmed, and it was during a week I would already be out of the parish waiting between appeals in the Josephinum Pontifical seminary in Columbus, so the timing was perfect. (It is too much to go

into here but many details of the trip seemed too coincidental not to be Providential).

We arrived on Tuesday morning on different flights (the other co-author, Sebastian Pfaffen, arrived with his wife some days earlier), and before even getting to the baggage claim I ran into Javier and Monica in the airport. We were staying at the General House of the Mercedarian Fathers, whose Father General is a Cordobes that we knew and who collaborated with the newspaper in the latter years before his election and move to Rome.

The Fathers were more than generous with us, treating us as part of the community. Again, as Providence would have it, the next morning – Wednesday September 24 – is the feast of their Order, Our Lady of Mercy, and both the Fathers and we had special tickets for the general audience. Javier used his contacts to obtain special seating among the Argentine special guests in the audience and so on Wednesday, after waiting to receive the tickets in the Porta Santa Ana under a light rain, we were escorted through the back to the audience which had already begun.

chairs etc., but were excited to be relatively close to the Holy Father to the left of the podium. At the end of the sermon, the Holy Father drew close to greet the sick and those that were closer to the podium. We were not in the front line, but Javier and the others drew close enough to shout out a greeting to the Holy Father and shake his hand as he passed. To our utter astonishment (and this was taped by Sebastian) after receiving the simple greeting of Javier, he replied: “We’ll see you tomorrow, to see what nonsense you’ve written about me”. He recognized Javier’s voice and remembered the audience that was planned for the next day. In fact, we knew that he had the audience in mind since he had been talking with a Jesuit friend of his in Córdoba who knows and works with Javier, and told them to the effect of “yes, next week I have a meeting with the Cordobese journalists”.

But to recognize Javier and Sebastian among the thousands that were there left us astounded. Astounded, but not without response, as Sebastian (on top of a chair behind) yelled out happily: “we wrote what you told us”, and the Pope replied laughing: “the same words, the SAME words” and with that walked on. The reference was to a couple of humorous stories, one in partic-

ular that he had told them by phone.

In the story, the priest involved used some swearing which Pope Francis related without holding back. Javier, in order not to scandalize, had changed slightly the words, but when in a later conversation the Pope heard what he had done, made him change it back to the original, adding “but you probably better write it without mentioning that I told you this story…”! Thus the reference to the “same words”.

The rest of the day we spent sightseeing and doing interviews that Javier had arranged (they did the interviews; I accompanied and watched in some). That evening we found out that the General of the Order of the Mercedarians, who had also been in another special spot in the audience, spoke to the Holy Father who asked him (before even getting to the above conversation with Javier) to “come with the Cordobeses who have an audience with me tomorrow, and bring mate!” (“Mate” is a drink typical to Argentina, Chile, Paragual and Uruguay, a type of tea prepared in a small cup and drunk with a small strainer in the form of a straw. If there is more than one person in the group, one person serves the mate - adding more warm water from a thermos - after each one drinks from the same cup. It is a stimulant similar

to coffee as well as a digestive drink.)

There is a funny story behind this, which Fr. Paul (the Cordobes Father General of the Mercarians) had told us the day before: at a meeting with the superiors of the different Orders he had approached the Holy Father and offered him mate. Later that afternoon the Pope had another important meeting and Fr. Paul had returned to his house (where we were staying). Suddenly two security men from the Holy See showed up looking for the “little priest, who gave the Holy Father the drink that morning”. They were very serious and Fr. Paul was quite nervous thinking something went wrong and they were coming to question him, but then they added, “he wants some more!” So while he heated water he dressed in his habit (very similar to the Dominicans) and climbed into the official vehicle which began to race down the road – the wrong way – with sirens blaring and lights, and all the while Fr. Paul in the back of the van trying to serve himself the first mate (which etiquette dictates you never give to anyone but yourself) without spilling the mate tea all over his white habit!

As it turns out, at midday Thursday the Superior informed Javier by phone he would not be able to make it but

another Father would take us to the audience. Thus Mónica was in charge of mate. We arrived at the Vatican about 4:45 for our 5 pm audience and went in though the Porta Santo Officio, the side of Saint Peter’s where the St. Martha residence is, which is where the Pope now lives. At no time did anyone check anything (such as our many bags of books and articles to be blessed), nor ask anything of us except if we were the party of Javier Camara.

With that we were in the papal receiving room. (Someone should revise the security protocol I think!)

The Pope arrived 5 minutes early, alone, and after the introductions and greetings we sat around the receiving room and he began to talk about the stories he had told to Javier as well as other stories. He spoke with me about the Oblates in Argentina (many of whom he knew) and his “analysis” of what happened there. He spoke also of Cura Brochero and many things about his life in Argentina. He gave us the impression that he was happy to have someone to talk to and reminisce with without protocol, and he shared mate with us. So you could say we had mate with the Pope.

At a certain point he said: “if you can stay a little longer (as though we were going to leave if he did not throw us out) I will go get something upstairs I forgot”. And off he went to get some gifts he prepared for the journalists.

Now there were several guards outside in the hall in front, but he did not ask them to get the stuff but rather after a few minutes came in again with a huge shopping bag (some department store in Italy as I recall) with religious articles for us. Again he asked (as if we were going to refuse) if we wanted some rosaries and “I am a little ashamed to offer these, but I know the people like them, they are cards with my picture…if you want them”. Of course we said yes trying to control our enthusiasm. Then he asked us “What more should I do?” and we asked him (rather brazenly since we were growing in confidence) to bless the articles we brought, sign the books (the ones for the authors he also dedicated with a profound and funny phrase: “To Javier Cámara, admired for his courage to delve into ‘lost causes’ and retrieve

from there memories of life. May the Lord bless you, pray for me. Francisco.”

I was able to present him the book on Archbishop Lamy and the magazine of the diocese describing in a few words the Diocese of Gallup for him. Then there were some pictures with us, and he greeted each of us leaving “because I saw there were some others waiting for me”. But he did not leave without picking up some alfajor cookies which we had brought for him and some of the books. What he could not carry he left on the table saying “One of the secretaries will come and get these, if not I will get them later”. We left a few seconds later, gathering our things and trying to clean some of the mate herb off the papal residence floors.

An hour and 20 minutes had passed.

The conversation helped me to understand a little better what motivates the Holy Father in what he does

“There is no question that one of the things that motivates this man is his desire to live the Gospel, in all its simplicity and with all of its practical consequences.” as well as what are some of his priorities. At a certain point, as mentioned above, learning that I formed part of a Congregation of priests some of whom work in Buenos Aires and were spiritually guided by him, we spoke almost exclusively of some of them who had entered into crisis. With his admirable memory he named them one after the other, obviously concerned about each of them. One in particular he spoke about which at the time (some years ago now) caused a large scandal in the church in Argentina. The priest had become in a short time a very well known and beloved spiritual father in the Charismatic Renewal. Still as a young priest, when his popularity seemed to be at its highest, he left the ministry and eventually married a woman with whom he had a child.

Later he entered into divorce with the woman. The Holy Father recalled that this man remained in contact with him as a “spiritual son”, whom eventually, while archbishop of Buenos Ai-

res, he named vice president of Cáritas (the largest charitable organization of the Church in Argentina). As the Holy Father recalled this I remembered the scandal this caused among some of the faithful (I’m afraid I can include myself at the time). The Pope continued as if to justify the decision: “He is a man of prayer” and he added with noticeable hope “Now he is waiting for his child who is seven to grow up so he can come back”. While the Holy Father spoke I could feel rise within me my objections: “Weren’t there other priests, religious or laymen he could have assigned? Why reward this man who walked away from his fruitful priestly life?” and then it hit me: I was thinking precisely like the elder brother of the prodigal son. He was thinking like the good father of the parable.

As he ended this part of the conversation, the Holy Father remarked: “I don’t know where Fr. N. is…” (another colleague of mine who was pastor of a large sanctuary of the Archdiocese and who also left the ministry) “…we should see where he is…” During all of this I should have taken a hint: as he spoke with us he was touching his pectoral cross which contains an image of the Good Shepherd carrying on his shoulders one of his wounded sheep.

“And when he does find it, he sets it on his shoulders with great joy and upon his arrival home, he calls together his friends and neighbors and says to them: ‘Rejoice with me because I have found my lost sheep’” (Luke 15: 6) The media focuses on what they perceive as possible changes in the doctrine of the Church, on the pope’s simplicity and breaks with protocol, but there is no question that one of the things that motivates this man is his desire to live the Gospel, in all its simplicity and with all of its practical consequences… I suspect that it will not be easy for us to keep up with him and embrace that same concrete and coherent putting into practice the Gospel. But is that not what renewal in the Church is about? “The words I have spoken to you are spirit and life”.

1939 - 2015: Celebrating 75 Years as a Diocese Note: the excerpts taken here come from various histories collected in the Diocesan archives, as well as an excellent book written by Elizabeth Kelley for the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the Diocese in 1989,

1. Christ the King, Shiprock Until 1924, the people of the Shiprock area were served by Franciscan priests from the mission at Lukachukai. In that year, the first Franciscan priest settled in the area to provide services to the Navajo.

Father Marcellus Troester, OFM, resided in Waterflow and traveled to Shiprock to say Mass and instruct the children.

His first action was to acquire land for a church in Shiprock. The construction of a log church was completed in 1925 and dedicated to Christ the King. Shiprock officially became a parish in 1935.

By the early 1970s, the stone church was too small to handle the growing community and a new church was completed and dedicated by Bishop Hastrich on November 26, 1972, the feast of Christ the King.

2. St. Helena, Alpine Before it was established as a parish on April 19, 1974, priests from Springerville had to travel over treacherous roads, made worse by deep snows in the winter, to say Mass for the Catholic residents of the area.

A private donation made possible the beautiful new church, rectory and hall which was dedicated to Saint Helena on May 27, 1973.

3. Our Lady of Sorrows, Seboyeta The community of Seboyeta was formed by an old Spanish Land Grant and most of the people living there are direct descendants of the original Spanish community. The first known records date from 1746.

For many years, particularly in the last half of the 19th century, Seboyeta was the mission headquarters for a large portion of northern Arizona and New Mexico. From here, priests traveled as far west as Flagstaff to hold services for the Catholic people spread across the area. In 1879, the parish center was moved to San Rafael.

There are many different dates for the founding of the church at Seboyeta, and one date was mentioned as early as 1778. The present church, built of adobe and dedicated to Our Lady of Sorrows, was built in 1820.

4. St. Mary of the Angels, Pinetop The large and growing parish of Pinetop, once a small mission of McNary, was established in the year 1974.

In 1973, Father Theophane Robertson, OFM, at that time the pastor of McNary, was assigned the task of finding land and overseeing the construction of a church.

Upon completion, it was dedicated to Saint Mary of the Angels.

In 1985, the church was remodeled and blessed by Bishop Hastrich.

Father Adam Wethington, OFM, a new church and hall were constructed. The new church was dedicated by Bishop Hastrich to Our Lady of Light, as was the old church, on May 4, 1975.

5. St. John Vianney, Gallup

In the 1920s and 1930s, Thoreau Catholics were served by the Diocesan priests from Saint Valerian Mission at Smith Lake.

After Saint Valerian Mission was closed and the church sold, Bishop Espelage purchased the Catholic Indian Center in 1941. Mass in Thoreau was said by the Franciscan Fathers from there until the Crownpoint parish was formed in 1962. Then Thoreau became a mission of Crownpoint.

The first church in Thoreau was used until it burned down. From the time of the fire until a new church was built and dedicated in 1951, services were held in a private home. By 1969, the village had outgrown the small church and a new multipurpose structure was built and dedicated that same year.

The mission has since closed, but a Catholic school continues to operate in Thoreau to this day.

The parish of St. John Vianney was established on February 9, 1973, and is located at the east end of Gallup. The church, dedicated by Bishop Hastrich on August 25, 1974, has glass stained windows donated from the old parish church of Saint Joseph in Keyport, New Jersey.

The stations of the cross and the altar backdrop are wood burnings made by the founding pastor, Father John Paulmichl. In 1976, a bell tower was given to the church by a donor and a shrine was erected beside the tower. A parish hall, rectory and guest rooms complete the complex situated at the base of the “hog-back� mountains.

6. Our Lady of Light, Cubero In 1833, the government of the Republic of Mexico granted a tract of land to a group to form a colony. The early Catholic residents of the colony, named Cubero, had to go to Laguna or Seboyeta for baptisms, marriages and religious services until a church could be constructed for them.

In 1866, a mission was established at Cubero, and an adobe church constructed. The building provided a refuge against Apache raids until 1881, when the raids ceased. In time, flash floods weakened the walls.

8. Risen Savior, Bluewater In 1975, a need for a church in Bluewater, 15 miles from Thoreau, became apparent. A trailer was purchased to serve as church and rectory. This was used until a former Protestant church and parsonage were purchased and remodeled. The church was dedicated to the Risen Savior on Sept. 9, 1977 and Bluewater became a mission of Thoreau. After the parish at Thoreau was closed, Bluewater became a mission of Crownpoint.

9. St. Mary, Bloomfield In the early years of the 20th century, Bloomfield was a mission of Blanco. It came under the care of the Franciscan Fathers assigned there in 1910.

Until 1936, there was no building for Catholics to use for religious observances.

In that year, Father Eusebius Schweitzer, OFM, then the pastor at Blanco, approached the residents of Bloomfield to see if they would be interested in having a church. Land was donated, and through other donations, enough money was obtained to construct a church which was dedicated to Saint Elizabeth.

The local people also contributed much time and labor to the construction of the church. Father Eusebius continued to visit to say Sunday Mass. Two of the Ursuline Sisters who were teaching at Blanco also came along to teach catechism to the children.

outgrown its little church. With the donation of more land, an attractive new church was completed and dedicated to the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin and called Saint Mary.

When funds became available through private donations, a new and larger church was constructed in Overgaard and dedicated to Our Lady of the Assumption on May 7, 1984.

11. Our Lady of the Assumption, Overgaard

13. St. Paul, Crownpoint

Overgaard, one of the newest parishes, is located at the southwest border of the diocese in Arizona. In the early years, people of the area had to travel either to Show Low or Snowflake to attend Mass.

On July 4, 1970, the first Mass in the Heber-Overgaard area was celebrated in a room in Coates Elementary School. Soon after, a small house in a valley in Heber was used as a mission church of Snowflake and was named Our Lady of the Valley.

On August 26, 1973, a small chapel was built in Heber and dedicated to Our Lady of the Canyon.

The mission at Crownpoint, which had been served by Franciscan priests from the Catholic Indian Center in Gallup, became a parish in 1962.

A small church, seating only 50, had been built in 1950 and dedicated to Saint Paul. Prior to this, services were held in Crownpoint Elementary School. It continued under the care of the Franciscans until 1975.

The community of Crownpoint has several government and tribal facilities located there which has led to an increased population in the area. The size of the congregation kept growing and after two expansions in three years, it was decided to build a new church.

The large hogan-shaped structure was completed in 1986 and dedicated by Bishop Hastrich that same year.

14. Holy Trinity, Flora Vista One of the newest parishes in the diocese, Holy Trinity in Flora Vista, was created on September 30, 1985.

The growing number of Catholic families in the area just north of Farmington necessitated this move.

As early as 1934, Masses were being said in a borrowed building. Religious education was also taught here. In 1985, land was purchased for a church.

Holy Trinity was dedicated May 25, 1986.

Blanco (pictured above) Before becoming a parish on May 28, 1900, Blanco was a mission of Parkview. The Reverend J. M. Garnier was sent to be the first pastor.

His parish comprised the whole county of San Juan, plus Rosa and Carracas in Rio Arriba County. A small church which burned in 1906 was located in a different site from the present church.

In 1910, when the Franciscans arrived in the area, Father Albert Daeger, OFM, became the first Franciscan assigned to the large parish.

Two years after his transfer from Blanco, he was named Archbishop of Santa Fe, becoming the leader for the missions he had served.

As late as 1941, the priests at Blanco still reported that they were traveling by horse at times to certain missions of the parish.

They felt they were more likely to reach their destinations on the bad roads by horse rather than by car.

On December 7, 1930, a disastrous fire destroyed the church and convent completely. Father Celsus Koenig, OFM, then the pastor, set about building a new church.

Because of the growing populations in some of the mission areas, the pastors at Blanco had the task of building churches at Aztec, Bloomfield and Navajo Dam. In recent years, the condition of the church required that a new one be constructed. It was completed and dedicated in 1986.

St. Michaels Indian School Students Honor Grandparents, Volunteer for Catholic Schools Week

Students at St. Michaels Indian School recently celebrated a “Grandparents Day�, in which the grandparents and elder relatives of the students were invited to spend a day at school with their relatives.

The following photos were taken of students and their grandparents throughout the day.

For Catholic Schools Week, the high school freshmen visited the St. Michael Association for Special Education and helped with beautification of the grounds such as picking up trash, re-painting buildings and picnic grounds, sweeping and dusting, vacuuming vehicles and even learning sign language.

IN THE DIOCESE OF GALLUP On an early Wednesday morning, before dusk, students of St. Joseph Mission School began a journey to visit the city of Santa Fe, New Mexico. They travelled to the New Mexico Roundhouse to meet legislators and represent our local communities of San Fidel, Acoma, and Laguna.

Once they arrived at the State Capitol, they were whisked off to different legislative offices to meet House Representatives and State Senators. They worked as pages to do official business on behalf of House Representatives Ken Martinez, Eliseo (Lee) Alcon, Georgene Louis, and State Senators Clemente Sanchez. Our students also discovered that Senator Sanchez and Representatives Louis and Sarah Maestas Barnes are alumni of St. Joseph School.

At the beginning of each session of the legislative day, each alum spoke on the benefit of Catholic education and how St. Joseph School help them with the skills to be successful in life and now as lawmakers for the citizens of New Mexico. All the students were proud to hear the name of St. Joseph School echo in the chambers of the Roundhouse. As the sessions progressed, the students were sent on errands to take messages or get supplies for legislators.

In the process the students were making friends among influential people. At the end of their duties, they received Certificates of Appreciation.

During the noon hour 5 students performed the Butterfly Dance with singers from Laguna Pueblo. Many people commented on the beauty of the Dance and how it moved their hearts.

After all their work was done, the students were taken on a tour of the State Capitol. At the end of the day they were ready to return home and share their experiences.

Newman Club Challenges Students to Keep the Faith The group at San Juan Community College is the first in the Diocese When the idea came to form a Newman Club at San Juan College, Catholic students willingly took to the task and hit the ground running. Although the club is only around a semester old, its members have jumped right into activities at the college and have big plans for the future.

Junior Manuel Martinez, president of the Club, says that he first heard of the idea at a SEARCH weekend from Paul Estavillo, who was the Youth Ministry director for the Diocese at the time. Estavillo has since left to pursue a teaching job, but his idea, left in the capable hands of college students, has turned into a full-fledged reality.

“It’s a club that helps us get closer to God and closer to each other, trying to build a community not just in the college but hopefully throughout all the Diocese,” said Martinez. “We also hope to show parents that if my kid goes here, it’s not going to be all party people. They’ll still be able to keep their faith.”

Newman Clubs – also called Newman

Centers – originally started in England at Oxford university and are named for Blessed John Cardinal Henry Newman, who encouraged Catholic students to form communities at non-Catholic colleges. There are now Newman centers and clubs all across the world. A previous club had been formed at San Juan College, but dissolved when the leader moved away. The reemergence of the club this year has become the first such center for Catholic students in the Diocese of Gallup.

Sophomore Jessica Gomez, secretary of the Club, says that the group’s 19 current members include a Protestant student, and that the Club is open to any other students, Catholic or otherwise, who wish to share their faith with fellow students. This tradition of welcoming other denominations also occurs at various other Newman centers.

“Now that we’ve actually started, it’s pretty open,” said Gomez. “We had an open house and got close to a hundred

people that wanted to sign up to be part of the group. There’s also an LDS (Mormon) group on campus and they ask us quite a few questions and told us we’re always invited to help them with activities on the campus.”

Throughout the school year, Newman Centers have a chaplain or group of chaplains to act as spiritual counselors for students. At the San Juan Newman Club, recently-ordained Deacon Matthew Lamaroux gives his time to the group.

“It helps Catholics to talk to other Catholics,” said Martinez. “We’re able to ask [Deacon Lamaroux] questions, if we have any questions about the Faith.”

The semesters for the students have been busy. Club members have participated in decorating the campus for fall, running a booth at the Halloween student carnival, and sponsoring a fundraiser for a local crisis pregnancy center.

Gomez mentioned that the group is also hoping to start a sock drive for FarmingBishop Wall with the students of the Newman Club and Deacon Matt Lamaroux, the spiritual director of the club.

Martinez notes that perhaps the most exciting event for the group was a student Mass celebrated by Bishop Wall on Tuesday, December 9.

Not everything the group does is religious, either. Martinez mentions that students from the group often get together simply to study in groups or for leisure activities, like an afternoon of bowling. Chavez hopes that all of these events, formal and informal, will help the club to grow over the coming semesters.

“We really want to make it more known to get our local priests and our local teens and young adults more involved,” she says. “Now we’re hoping to do something once a month, to have a Mass at the college, so that people can come and attend and be part of the group, regardless of whether they’re Catholic or some Protestant denomination. We’re just trying to get people more aware – our whole goal is to spread the word. You know, try to follow Christ’s teachings, be there for one another, treat people well, and bring people together, so that’s kind of what we’re aiming for so far.”

To Martinez, also, the love of Christ and the support of fellow students is of utmost importance.

“It’s a club that helps us get closer to God and closer to each other, trying to build a community not just in the college but hopefully throughout all the Diocese.”

The students of the Newman Club in San Juan express hope that other Clubs in the Diocese will eventually be formed.

Chavez explains that for many of them, the Club is both a reminder and a continuation of the Faith they’ve followed throughout their lives.

“Just because you’re going to college doesn’t mean you have to quit the faith. We can still stay united, and Christ can still be in your life at college even with temptation and everything. This is a place that you can come and just be yourself.”

Other women of class and privilege turned to Frances for spiritual advice and support and often imitated her generosity to the poor, as well as her devotion to her husband and children. They also came to follow her in her faith and service to God. After the death of her husband to whom she had been married for forty years, Frances joined the religious community she had founded (Oblates of Tor de Specchi, after the tower into which they moved in 1433). They were not religious Sisters and did not take vows, but they were committed to living in common (which Frances could not do while her husband was alive) and devoting their lives to works of mercy. Frances is known to have had mystical experiences and revelations, and to have had the constant apparition of her guardian angel. She developed remarkable powers of healing (which she attributed to her guardian angel), and the fame of these spread all over Rome.

Miracles of healing attended her death and the odor of sanctity was intensely noted in the room in which she died. During the time that the funeral was delayed due to the mass of people who wanted to pay their respects, the fragrance continued to linger—to the delight of the visitors.

When a monumental tomb was prepared a few months after her death, the first tomb was opened to effect the transfer of Frances’ remains. At this time the body was found perfectly preserved and still exhaling the same sweet fragrance as before. Currently, the Saint’s body is no longer incorrupt.

Frances of Rome (1384 - 1440) Frances was born in the Trastevere district of Rome, to parents who were both wealthy and deeply religious.

With the Benedictine spiritual director her mother chose for her, Frances planned an ascetic religious life for herself, but her parents had already chosen a husband for her. She became a young bride and mother, marrying at the age of 12 after her father denounced her desire to become a nun.

The early years of her marriage were hard on Frances, as she preferred prayer and penance over her husband’s parties and play.

Frances and her sister-in-law snuck away daily to Mass, pledging to God that they would be dutiful wives despite their longing to work with the poor. Frances saw everyone - rich and poor, nobility and peasantry - as her equal, and

Esteeming Our Elders With Fr. Tad Pacholczyk Occasionally we hear disturbing stories in the media about young people who perpetrate abuse against the elderly.

In a widely reported 2009 story, for example, caretakers at the Quadrangle Assisted Living facility outside Philadelphia were charged in connection with the abuse of an elderly patient named Lois McCallister. Three employees, aged 19, 21, and 22 were caught on a surveillance camera as they taunted, mocked, and assaulted the partially naked 78-year-old woman.

She had begun complaining to visiting family members several months prior that someone was hurting her and hitting her.

There were also initial signs of bruising on her hand and wrist.

Bringing abuse to light After bringing the bruises to the attention of the nursing home’s administrators, the family was informed that the allegations were unfounded, and were told the accusations were simply the result of the patient’s advancing dementia.

Family members suspected there was more to it, and clandestinely installed the video camera, hidden in a clock in the victim’s room.

After capturing the assailants on tape, they concluded that the abuse suffered by their mother had been ongoing for some time. One of the young women charged in the case told investigators she was working on another floor the night the clock/camera captured the scene in the elderly woman’s room. A family member later told news reporters, “They called the third girl down from another floor and said, ‘Come down, we’re going to start.’”

As a consequence of the abuse, the Department of Public Welfare eventually revoked the license for the facility, and the family filed a civil lawsuit against the parent company.

A tragic event like this leads to intense questioning about how these young people, charged with the special care of the older generation, could end up becoming so callous, inhuman, and brutal.

What can be done to prevent this kind of “inter-generational disconnect” from occurring in the future? And what can be done to build up unity and respect between genera-

tions?

Honor your parents A nearly universal point of reference over the years, and a counsel of incalculable worth, has been the injunction enshrined in the Decalogue: Honor your father and mother. A decision to abide by this commandment invariably serves to strengthen the concern of children for their parents and elders, and helps forge a bond between the generations.

The Book of Sirach offers similarly sage advice: “My son, take care of your father when he is old; grieve him not as long as he lives.

Even if his mind fail, be considerate of him; revile him not all the days of his life; kindness to a father will not be forgotten, firmly planted against the debt of your sins . . .”

In a sense, it is precisely the weakness and vulnerability of the elderly that beckons us to manifest a greater respect towards them and never to mistreat them in the strength of youth.

Building solidarity As Saint John Paul II beautifully summed it up in his 1999 Letter to the Elderly: “. . . the signs of human frailty which are clearly connected with advanced age become a summons to the mutual dependence and indispensable solidarity which link the different generations . . . “ Compassionately attending to the needs of the elderly draws the generations together and builds solidarity.

When the unique gifts of the elderly are invested and shared with the younger generation, this, too, builds up solidarity. Elderly people help us see human affairs with a sense of perspective tempered by experience, reflection, and wisdom.

Whenever grandparents contribute to the

raising and formation of the grandchildren, even by doing something as simple as teaching them how to pray and think about God, they strengthen inter-generational ties and build family unity.

Small but important steps We can foster intergenerational care and support within our families and communities in other simple ways as well, for example, through conscientious parenting, including small but important steps such as: • Insisting on meal time together as a family (which builds up mutual respect and concern for others in the family).

• Teaching compassion by visiting sick or elderly neighbors together.

• Teaching children to welcome all human life, even when weak or handicapped, • Praying together as a family.

• Decreasing media time and guarding against violent computer and video games, pornography, and other practices that dehumanize people and make them seem like objects to be manipulated.

As we seek to build relational bridges across generations and work to construct a society that esteems its elders, we simultaneously build up homes and communities that are liberated of the threat of abuse or neglect -- places of safety, mutual support, and love, even as the hairs on our head turn gray and our strength wanes.
