Wastewater treatment plant ‘like open sewer’ APPEALS for Irish Water to upgrade the wastewater system at Bunmahon, Co Waterford, have “fallen on deaf ears”, locals have claimed. Reports by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and Waterford City and County Council have highlighted the poor quality of the water, with the EPA stating it is “imperative” that upgrades are carried out by Irish Water. Back in December, 2021, Waterford Green Party TD Marc O’Cathasaigh told the Dail that Bunmahon deserved better than to be treated as “an open sewer”. He called for investment in the wastewater treatment facility, which now serves a population four times larger than the one it was designed for. “The existing wastewater system is 50 years old and has not been subject to any significant upgrade in that time,” he said. “It was originally designed to cater for a population of approximately 120 people. It is the most basic of primary treatments. It has a holding tank

is then syphoned off the top. The tanks are desludged annually. However, the permanent population is now double that

and is 500 or more during the summer. Therefore, the wastewater system is operating at four times over capacity,” he said. Among the local campaigners is Jamie Power, who is one of many parents who will not let their children bathe in the sea. “My voice is one of over 650 who signed a petition almost a year ago in support of wastewater treatment upgrade and improvements,” Mr Power told the Irish Examiner. They founded the Bunmahon Water Quality Initiative group, which has collated water quality monitoring data to support their claim that “we do not have a functioning public treatment of our sewage” in the village. The EPA said the septic tanks provide “little treatment” to the wastewater, and assessment of how they can be optimised should be a “priority” for Irish Water. While he said it was “ridiculous” that they have had to “fight this hard” for priority status, Mr Power said commitments have been Continued on next page

Celebrate 15 years of Petmania A young customer enjoys the celebrations

THE RNLI has issued an appeal to parents and children after a rescue mission had to be launched to retrieve two children swept out to sea. Both were on inflatable toys in the water at Clonea Beach in Waterford recently, and because of wind, both were pulled out to sea. A lifeboat helmed by Alan Kelly, with crew members Paidi Breathnach, Cathal Reilly and Pat Devereaux onboard, was launched at 12.25 pm, on July 19, and headed north of the An Rinn peninsula. The RNLI said that “while inflatables can be great fun, we would advise that you don’t take them to the beach as they are not designed for open water.”

Covid in Waterford WATERFORD was among the counties with the highest incidence rate of Covid last week, together with Laois, Carlow, Tipperary, Kilkenny, Cork, Sligo and Limerick. The counties all had an incidence rate of more than 405.9 per 100,000, although it was as high as 493.5 in Laois. The highest number of cases was in the 35-44 age group, accounting for one in five infections.

PETMANIA is celebrating its 15th anniversary this month with a PAWty and PAWsome competition in its local Waterford store. The top prize is a €1500 Petmania gift card for one lucky winner. This is an extra special celebration for Petmania Waterford as it was the first Petmania Superstore in

Ireland, opening its doors in July 2007. Petmania began as a pet section in a garden centre in Kilkenny City in 2005 as part of the O’Keeffe Group, founded by Eamonn and Maureen O’Keeffe. Its popularity propelled a rapid expansion of Petmania pet stores across the country and the pet retailer opened

its 15th store in Roscommon this year. Petmania is encouraging everyone in Co Waterford to enter its competition to be in with a chance of winning a €1500 Petmania gift card. To enter the competition simply join the Petmania mailing list before Wednesday 31st August 2022. Visit www. petmania.ie for more.

Bunmahon ‘is like an open sewer’

Continued from previous page received from Irish Water that it will engage more with locals over the coming weeks. The EPA noted during a visit last March that the designated bathing area is “in the vicinity of the discharge(s)”, adding that its three septic tanks lack stormwater and screening capacity. This means objects such as papers and plastics cannot be removed, Marc Ó Cathasaigh said, adding the plant conducts the “most basic of primary treatments” and is no longer suitable. He said the area is an “amazing natural resource” on Waterford’s Copper Coast and should be treated as such. Irish Water said that its next investment cycle is planned for the end of 2023 and that Bunmahon is being considered, but that it is “not possible to confirm if Bunmahon will be included” in the final investment cycle plan. The utility said it is working to ensure the current system operates as best as possible. However, recent investigations have “shown evidence of washthroughs of items such as wipes and grease” in the water.

Local TDs welcome AIB U-turn on plans to scrap cash

SINN Féin TD for Waterford David Cullinane has welcomed the announcement that AIB will not now make many branches cashless and praised local communities for standing up for their services. The decision by the bank would have included many branches in Waterford and forced local customers to travel for basic services. Mr Cullinane said: “I welcome that AIB have reversed their decision. This is the right thing to do. Their decision to make these branches cashless was short-sighted and poorly thought out. It would have caused major problems for customers here in Waterford, including vulnerable people and businesses, by forcing them to travel long distances for basic services. It should never have been allowed to get this far. “It is clear that the Future of Banking in Ireland Review is urgently required and must include close examination of local banking services, and the role of the Credit Union sector, to ensure that customers are not subjected to this unacceptable stress again. “Customers in Waterford deserve to know that they will be treated fairly by their bank and that an appalling situation like this will not be allowed to

happen in the future. He added: “The Government are majority shareholders in AIB and need to assert their role in ensuring banks service communities.” Meanwhile, local Fianna Fáil TD, Mary Butler, also welcomed AIB’s decision to halt plans to move 70 local branches to a cashless service. “As Minister for Older People I really welcome this decision,” Minister Butler said. “Withdrawing cash services from branches will leave many of our most vulnerable people in towns across Ireland without cash banking services, with some customers having to travel an hour to access cash and ultimately getting left behind in terms of being able to effectively deal with their personal finances on a day-to-day basis.” The Waterford TD added: “I am pleased to see that AIB have now decided to review the situation and I will work with all relevant stakeholders to ensure that the voices of those most vulnerable are heard and they get all the support they deserve and need.” Unlike other banks that have dispensed with cash at counters in certain branches, AIB decided to go one step further and remove ATMs from the affected properties, leading to political and public backlash.

Food Festival on course for 2023

One of Ireland’s biggest food festivals, West Waterford Festival of Food will return to its traditional Spring date next year, taking place from 14-16 April 2023. The confirmed date comes as the festival reveals record attendance figures of 67,000 for the 2022 West Waterford Festival of Food, which was held in June. The programme featured an eclectic mix of events for all ages, ranging from sevencourse tastings and sharing plates, to outdoor discovery

and a long table feast. West Waterford Festival of Food CEO Maeve Quill said: “The last two years, for so many, highlighted how food can bring us together even when we are apart and the importance of supporting local. “The record-breaking attendance this year shows how much people are embracing this new love of food, as they came out in their droves to experience the exceptional produce of our local and national producers.”

Pass master – why I never played rugby for Ireland

L

ike many a good story, this one involves an Irishman, an English man and a Scotsman. One cut short my rugbyplaying career, another revived it and the third brought it to an end, once and for all. The Irishman went by the distinctive name of Derek Peekar. He was the son of a farmer and a giant of a lad. The same description could have been applied to half the boys at the school I attended; six foot and growing, built like combine harvesters, heads like bulls, hands like shovels. They all loved rugby and that went down very well with the school. I was in the other half. We were city kids of normal proportions and we mostly preferred soccer, which the school would not let us play. On the rugby field we spent most of our

Michael Wolsey time trying to avoid the farming fraternity who took a delight in ploughing us into the mud. To this end I acquired a set of skills which, had I put them to different use, might actually have made me a reasonable rugby player. I developed good tactical awareness which helped me avoid contact with other players, not to mention the ball. I had good handling ability so if, by some mischance, I did end up with ball, I could get rid

of it almost instantly. Since I rarely presented anything like an attacking threat, I had little to fear from tackles. But, just in case, I developed a neat little swivel-and-turn movement which sent many a foe in the wrong direction. Throwing away the ball as I turned, helped greatly to reduce the danger. Sometimes it even looked like a pass. My plan was to appear active enough to avoid the wrath of games’ teachers while also avoiding the fists and feet of farmers’ sons. I may have overdone the first part of the equation for I got picked for a trial for the school’s under-15 side. I had no real fear of being selected but I did fear the boys out there who were ready to kill for that honour. It was a poor kick that caused the trouble. The ball bounced tamely in front of me and there was no honourable way I could avoid it.

But there, behind the ball, was a sight to chill the heart - Derek Peekar, six foot of agricultural aggression, bearing down on me at full pelt. There was no time for pretence or fancy manoeuvres. I swivel-turned out of the way and waved the ball, and Derek, through for a splendid try. “Well you’ll never make the team anyway,” growled the disgusted teacher. Ah, sweet music to my ears. And that would have been the end of my rugby days, but for the Englishman. John Pugh was editor of the Liverpool Daily Post, a newspaper where I worked a decade or so after my moment of school infamy. John had been a good rugby player and was a keen follower of the game. He had a high regard for Irish rugby, based mainly on a long-standing friendship with Willie John McBride.

In a fit of enthusiasm for his favourite sport he organised a match between the Daily Post and a team from two Edinburg newspapers. The venture was ill-fated, for hardly anyone on the Daily Post staff knew anything about rugby. “You’ll play, of course,” John told me. “Everyone from Ireland is a natural rugby player.” Well, I had to oblige. The honour of my nation was at stake - not to mention any hope of promotion at work. And so, on a chilly day in November. I stood on a park pitch in bleak Birkenhead. Memories came flooding back and they weren’t good. We were facing 15 clones of my school mates, each ten years older and five stone heavier. And there was Derek Peekar, who had cleverly morphed into a Scotsman called Malcolm. Twenty minutes into the game, he was bearing down on me with undisguised menace.

The honour of Ireland insisted that I stand up to him. Commonsense said I should get out of the way. Commonsense won. But I was out of practice. My swivel-turn was not as speedy as it used to be and I felt a searing pain as I went down with 18 stone of Scotsman on top of me. Legend, which I encouraged, had it that I risked life and limb for my team. But in truth the injury was not inflicted by Malcolm. The damage was done when I tried to escape. The doctor in Birkenhead hospital had two bits of good news. With the help of a metal pin, the broken ankle would heal perfectly ... “but I’m afraid you’ll never play rugby again.” Two women visiting a man in the next bed overheard and were shocked. “He’ll never play rugby again,” they repeated sadly. And I never did. Your loss, Andy Farrell. Eat your heart out.

Plans for apartments at historic house scrapped

PLANS to build apartments on the site of the historic Viewmount House have been rejected, after strong opposition to the plan from locals. The proposal to develop a two-storey residential block comprising eight two-bedroom flats at Viewmount House, located in the Viewmount Park housing estate on Waterford’s Dunmore Road, would detract from the house, which is a protected structure, and would affect the amount of green and recreational space available in the estate, council planning chiefs maintained. The application was first lodged by Holmacre Investment Limited on May 9th this year but faced stiff opposition, drawing almost 70 submissions from residents and accusations that Waterford City and County Council had made a “highly inappropriate” endorsement of the project following a letter of support provided for developer Holmacre Investment. Fears were also raised that works would require the chopping down of a 300-year-

Waterford fans in Croke Park for the final whistle in the Glen Dimplex All-Ireland Senior Camogie Championship Semi-Final which they lost to Cork in Croke Park. Pic: Noel Browne old Cedar tree on the half-acre site. Viewmount House, which is now used as offices, was built in the mid-19th century as a country house. The city’s expansion eastwards has meant it now stands in the middle of the Viewmount housing estate containing roughly 300 homes. While council planners

disagreed that the apartments would overly impact on locals, they turned down the developer’s plans, saying the proposal’s “overall form, scale, massing and location is considered inappropriate” and would not be in line with good conservation practice. It would “dominate” and

“visually detract” from the architectural character and significance of Viewmount House and negatively impact on the land around it. If permitted, the council feared it would set an “undesirable precedent” for similar developments on the lands of large historic houses.

Upgrade to local theatre

THE Town Hall Theatre on Friary Street, Dungarvan, is to undergo an upgrade as Waterford City and County Council invests significantly in the venue, which dates back to the 19th century. The investment will be in upgrading the online booking system and the upgrade of stage lighting and associated systems, for which a tender is currently under way. Kieran Kehoe, Dungarvan Town Manager and Director of Services at the council, said the new physical and operations structures will future-proof the theatre. “The theatre is a wonderful, old-style, local amenity and this investment will ensure that it is on a secure footing to bring a quality artistic offering to the people of Dungarvan and its environs for years to come. “Waterford City and County Council is investing €40,000 in the upgrade of the stage lighting, which will greatly enhance the mood and experience of the audience.” To allow for these works, the facility will not be available for use until Spring 2023.

€50m for vacant homes

THE launch of a new €50m Croí Cónaithe (Towns) Fund will support bringing vacant and underused buildings in Waterford towns and villages back into residential use, according to Minister for Mental Health and Older People, Mary Butler. Minister Butler said: “This new Croí Cónaithe Towns scheme will help turn vacant properties in Waterford into homes again and in doing so

revitalise towns and villages into vibrant communities. “It is designed to ensure that everyone has access to good quality housing, and access to sustainable towns and villages.” A grant, delivered through Waterford Council, of up to €30,000 will be available for the refurbishment, including the conversion of a property which has not been used as a home before now.

city falls to ‘fair’

NOT one Irish city was classified as having ‘good’ air quality over the past two years, according to a new report by the EU’s environmental watchdog, which classed Waterford city as ‘fair’. The European Environment Agency’s updated rating of air quality in cities across Europe in the period 2020-2021 found the air quality in Dublin, Cork, Limerick and Waterford only rated as ‘fair’. A ‘fair’ rating means the level of air pollution is just above the annual guideline recommended by the World Health Organization. The report found Dublin had the best air quality among the Irish cities, ranking at 35th place. Limerick was ranked in 73rd place, with Waterford in 130th position out of 344 European cities surveyed. Only 11 cities were classified as having good air quality, with Umeå in Sweden and Faro and Funchal in Portugal regarded as the cleanest in Europe.

Super Swarms!

Flying ants emerging from a colony in my back garden (Photo Justin Ivory) We have arrived at the time of the year when the media is full of sensationalist headlines about invasions of flying ants of apocalyptic and biblical plague proportions! Relax! Flying ant season is here. It is a perfectly natural, normal, and harmless annual phenomenon. Flying ants are known as alates. In most cases the flying ants we see are the sexually mature queens and males of the Black Garden Ant (Lasius niger). The larger individuals are the queens. These annual swarming events coincide with periods of hot, humid and calm weather, and typically happen in July and August. In the weeks leading up to a swarming event you often see heaps of soil appearing above the colony nests. In an ant colony the queen lays eggs, most of which develop into female workers. When the colony is ready the queen produces new, virgin queens and males. These both have wings. The swarming events are these males (drones) and virgin queens (princesses) leaving the colony. Other colonies in the area are also doing the same at the same time. The drones and princesses scatter on exit to maximise the chances of mating between different colonies. This reduces inbreeding and maintains genetic diversity. The larger winged females can often be seen flying joined together with a smaller winged male in what is referred to as the nuptial flight. Females will mate with several males. After mating the males die. Mated queens will chew off their wings and go about establishing a new colony at a suitable nest site. The sperm a queen receives during her nuptial flight is enough for her to lay fertilised eggs for her whole lifetime. A queen could live upto 15 years and lay thousands of eggs in that time. Flying in such large numbers offers protection against predators and increases the chances of reproduction. Swarming days provide a welcome protein feast for gulls, swifts, house martins, swallows and other birds and animals. visiting Ireland in larger groups the same could happen here.

Waterford’s Maritime World by John Mannion

Rescued Chimpanzees of the Congo RTE2, Monday August 1, 8.00pm

Where The Crawdads Sing Cinemas nationwide

IN October 1750 Walter Butler, a Waterford sea captain, purchased a ship in the port of Bordeaux and had it refitted there before loading it with wine, brandy and other French produce for his home port. Renamed the Catherine after his wife, the ship spent the winter in Waterford where Butler and his men prepared for a voyage to Newfoundland. The ledger contains the most detailed description of a Waterford ship, shipmaster and crew for the eighteenth century and is a record of everyday economic exchanges with merchants, traders, artisans and labourers in Waterford city.

FOR nearly 50 years, Dr Goodall has had a vision to create a better world for all. Integral to this vision is the idea that every individual has a role to play and is important – both human and nonhuman animals alike. That is why she founded Tchimpounga Chimpanzee Rehabilitation Center in the Republic of the Congo nearly 30 years ago. For decades, the sanctuary has served as a safe haven for great apes from the wild. Now, the stories of the incredible rescued chimpanzees of Tchimpounga and their caregivers are finally told in this new documentary.

KYA (Daisy Edgar-Jones) is known in her small town as ‘Marsh Girl’ after she was left to fend for herself at a young age and has now become a gifted naturalist and writer. She is now also accused of murder and with the help of her lawyer (David Straithairn), she must answer the town’s charges and free herself once again. ‘Where The Crawdads Sing’ was a publishing success in 2018 but the movie opts for the most basic and obvious interpretation and hs no real sense of depth. Still, the legions who did love the book will flock to the cinemas in their droves, as they always do for big adaptations.

SOMEHWERE between Bond and Bourne lies ‘The Gray Man’ the latest character from The Russo Brothers, and their biggest budgeted film since they redefined modern cinema with the two most recent ‘Avengers’ films, blowing, by all accounts, some $200m on this. Apart from a serious amount of cars being wrecked and a hefty insurance bill, it’s hard to see where the money went. Oh, and flights. Lots of flights. You’ll need to grab the globe down from your shelf to keep up with all the needless locations Ryan Gosling gets to. Still, despite the bad reviews, this is a thrilling — if at times corny — enough affair for a Friday night in.

Happy 30th Bir Opening on Friday, July 29, with a stunning evening show by French spectacle specialists Mécanique Vivante Spraoi unveils three days of street festivities before climaxing on Sunday, July 31, with the spectacular Spraoi Parade followed by fireworks launched from the River Suir. Spraoi is the Irish word for fun and exuberance. Audiences agree, and are expected to pack streets in Ireland’s oldest city and be entertained by international musicians, circus and street arts performers. Around every corner something imaginative awaits audiences of all ages with free entertainment and attractions day and night. Spraoi comes from its people and place. It’s a brilliant occasion for visitors to sample the real

Waterford; home of hurler John Mullane’s famous phrase: “I loves my county.” It’s easy to understand why on a Spraoi weekend. While proudly rooted in its community Spraoi looks to the world and this year’s festival presents entertainers from Ireland, UK, Netherlands, France, Spain and Switzerland Audiences can access performances throughout the city centre each afternoon. The city’s narrow streets and medieval buildings provide a magical environment for sights, sounds and imaginative encounters for families. At night popular city outdoor food and drinks venues will host pulsing music performances, bringing a sense of European café culture for revelers and party-people. On Sunday evening the Spraoi Parade featuring hundreds of costumed performers and fabulous floats will weave through the city’s streets and quays. The parade is one of Ireland’s summer highlights and a must-see event on all holiday bucketlists. This is the 30th Spraoi Festival and is likely to be the summer’s biggest birthday party. !

backtoschool

Why it’s so important to plan ahead ... No sooner have the Summer school holidays begun than it’s time to think about all things back-to-school related. Whether it’s pre school, primary school or secondary school, there’s an emotional, and finanical element to the transition. All of this can lead to anxiety for both child and parent, and if there’s more than one child involved it can be quite a stressful time for families. There are of course things that can be done to offset any negative aspects of this time so that you can instead be fully prepared and prepare your little ones too for the next step on their educational journey. Proper planning of both your time and your finances will help to make things go seamlessly. So the obvious advice is not to leave things to the last minute. Proper Planning You will usually get a list from the school of what your child will need in the way of books and stationary and what is expected regarding school attire. Thankfully there is a shift coming down the line away from the crested and frankly expensive jumpers and tracksuits and more towards budget friendly generic uniforms which won’t break the bank and which your little tykes may have grown out of by mid term! To this end, buy two sizes, one that fits and one a little bigger. This goes for shoes too. Be aware of the ‘voluntary’ donations most schools are forced to request from parents to keep the show going when it

comes to sports, art, and other activities. Some schools have even had to ask parents for donations to upcoming maintenance of the roof or the heating system as they simply wouldn’t be able to afford these essential works otherwise. Financial Assistance

If your finances are tight you can apply for the Back to School Clothing and Footwear Allowance. You may qualify if: You have a child between 4 and 17 or between 18 and 22 in secondary education - You are getting a qualifying payment from the Department of Social Welfare or an approved training course or employment scheme. - You are getting an Increase for a Qualified Child (applies in most cases). - You satisfy a means test. -

Application forms are available from your Intreo Centre, local Social Welfare Branch Office and Citizens Information Centres or you can apply online using mywelfare.ie. Be aware that certain rules apply and the closing date for applications is September 30, 2021. Most people apply from June/July onwards so don’t delay. This year the government is providing an extra €25 to each child in a scheme de-

signed to help families cover the costs of going back to school. The Back to School Clothing and Footwear allowance, which will be paid automatically to around 110,000 families in 2019, will increase to €150 for children aged 4-11, up €25 from a €125 allowance in 2018. There’s also been a €25 increase for children aged 12 and over – a jump from €250 in 2018 to €275 in 2019. The means-tested one-off payment aims to help families with the costs of children returning to school. It is paid automatically from the week beginning 8 July. Preparing your child Once the practical elements are out of the way you can begin to prepare your child (and yourself) emotionally if it is their very first day of school or even their first day at ‘big school.’ Talk to your child about what they can expect in the weeks leading up the school term. Be positive and try not to convey any anxiety or worry you may have yourself to the child. Explain that there will be lots of other children exactly like yours there and that it’s all new and exciting to them too. You could even drive by the school a few times so your child becomes familiar with the route you’ll be taking and the building itself, let them know you’ll be there to see them off and you (or whoever will be dropping off and picking up) will be right outside waiting when they’re fin-
