Waterford tops list of Covid counties Waterford has emerged as having had the highest rate of incidence of Covid-19, with recent figures showing the county topped the league table with an incidence of 661.9 per 100,000, followed by Carlow with 586.7 per 100,000. The figures from the Health Protection Surveillance Centre are based on free HSE PCR tests and do not include people who found they were positive after a home antigen test. It comes against an improving Covid-19 picture, with the number of patients in hospital with Covid-19 falling to 933, although 58 of them are in intensive care. The counties with the lowest incidence are Monaghan, Donegal, Mayo, Cavan, Meath, Leitrim, Roscommon, Louth and Dublin. In one hospital outbreak there were 15 cases and in a nursing home up to 27 residents and staff caught the virus. There was also a significant outbreak in a prison involving 99 cases. a stroke or heart attack over the next 10 years – but without existing cardiovascular disease – who contract Covid-19 are nearly three times as likely to be hospitalised and require treatment in intensive care. They are six times as likely to die from the virus compared to those at low cardiovascular risk. The researchers say the findings emphasise the importance of Covid-19 vaccination and investing in strategies to improve cardiovascular health that could reduce the severity of the virus across the population. Throughout the pandemic, chronic health conditions such as cardiovascular disease have been associated with the most severe outcomes, including hospitalisations and deaths. Meanwhile, Sinn Féin TD for Waterford David Cullinane has said that new figures obtained by the party expose an alarming number of patients are waiting more than 24 hours for care at the University Hospital Waterford Emergency Department. Centre is caring for two years

Waterford school and college students are being invited to submit poems for an upcoming conference taking place in Waterford to mark Poetry Day Ireland. ‘Soundings’ will be the theme of the two-day event on 28 and 29 April, based on the well-known English textbook of the same name, which was studied by generations of Leaving Cert candidates. The event is a collaboration between Waterford Institute of Technology, Christ Church Cathedral in Waterford and the Modwords Waterford Creativity Festival.

STAFF at the Waterford Residential Care Centre have just marked two years since accommodation was taken up there. The €25.4m purpose-built facility, developed on a site adjacent to St Patrick’s Hospital, features three units (30-bed Farronshoneen, 20bed Farrandale and 20-bed Grange) totalling 80 en-suite single bedrooms and replaced long stay accommodation for

the elderly previously housed in wards at St Patrick’s. The transfer of residents from St Patrick’s and St Aidan’s to more comfortable surrounds was a challenge accomplished during the first “lockdown” of the Covid-19 pandemic in April 2020, when the vaccination roll out was still more than eight months away. Centre by the Minister of State for Mental Health and Older People Mary Butler TD took place in August 2021. Mr Cullinane said that much more must be done to ensure that patients at the University Hospital Waterford receive high quality and timely care without these delays. “Sinn Féin has obtained new figures from the HSE that expose an alarming number of people have been left waiting for more than 24 hours to be seen at the University Hospital Waterford Emergency Department. Behind every number is a patient who needed timely care and was left to wait for far too long,” he said. “Let me be clear, the staff at the University Hospital Waterford are doing an incredible job, working under pressure to do their very best to serve our community. But they are being let down by a lack of funding, planning and leadership by the government,” he added. He said an “urgent zero tolerance plan” is now needed in the county.

Freedom to see all City has to offer tourists

Waterford’s museums have teamed up to announce a brand-new ‘Freedom of Waterford’ ticket, which offers visitors a guided walking tour and access to six attractions in the city. Visitors can now follow in royal footsteps and enjoy a guided walking tour experience — on the back of the recent visit from Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall — with one of the expert guides at Waterford Treasures. The tour takes in 1,000 years of the history of Waterford, all within 1,000 paces. The tour highlights include an opportunity to learn of the City’s Viking foundations, be inspired by medieval wonders and experience elegant Georgian architecture. Following the walking tour, the Freedom of Waterford Tour ticket enables each visitor to take a deep dive into their favourite era of Ireland’s heritage, with complete access to the Medieval Museum, Bishop’s Palace, the new Irish Museum of Time and the newly opened Irish Silver Museum. the Medieval Museum, visitors can take a step back into 13th and 15th century Waterford and explore the atmospheric underground Choristers’ Hall and the 15th century Wine Vault. Dogs Trust warns of toxic treat threat

DOGS Trust Ireland is asking dog owners to be extra vigilant over the next few weeks, as leftover Easter eggs are likely to be discovered by your pet. Visits to the vet are avoidable if proper precautions are put in place, according to the charity. The biggest toxic threat to dogs is consuming chocolate, as it contains theobromine, which can have fatal consequences. Daffodils also pose risks as these beautiful Easter flowers

can be toxic if consumed. Eating the bulbs, flowers or even drinking water from the vase can have similar effects to eating chocolate. The same can be said for hot-cross buns, another popular Easter treat, as ingesting even a small amount of raisins could lead to kidney failure. It’s ‘now or never’ to stop global warming WE have less than three years to stop the rise of carbon emissions and less than a decade to cut them in half, the UN has said in a shocking report on global warming. That daunting task is still possible, but current policies are leading the planet towards catastrophic temperature rises, the UN’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) made clear. The 2,800-page report — by far the most comprehensive

assessment of how to halt global warming — outlines “a litany of broken climate promises”, said UN chief Antonio Guterres in a scathing attack on governments and industry. “Some government and business leaders are saying one thing but doing another. Simply put, they are lying. “And the results will be catastrophic,” Mr Guterres said in a video message released at the same time as the recent UN report.

In its third major review in just eight months, the IPCC pointed out that greenhouse gas emissions have risen 12% since 2010 and by 54% since 1990 and are now higher than at any point in human history. It said that if global CO2 emissions continue at current rates, the remaining carbon budget for keeping warming to 1.5C will likely be exhausted by 2030. The report highlights that there are options in all sectors to

at least halve emissions by 2030 but says that this will require major transitions in the sector. Cutting back on long-haul flights, switching to plantbased diets, climate-proofing buildings and other ways of cutting the consumption that drives energy demand could reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 40-70% by 2050. This means global emissions will have to be reduced by 43% by 2030.

The Cabinet has signed off on the plan to reduce the VAT rate on gas and electricity from 13.5% to 9% - but there will be no reduction in home heating oil. The Department of Environment, Climate and Communications said that the temporary VAT reductions will begin on May 1 and will last until the end of October. Cuts to excise duty on petrol and diesel, announced last month, will last until Budget 2023. An additional €100 fuel allowance payment will be made, and a programme of communications will be launched to inform businesses and consumers of ways to reduce energy costs. But an overall cut on VAT looks increasingly uncertain, despite talks in recent weeks between Taoiseach Micheál Martin and Minister for Finance Paschal Donohoe with the European Commission. Tánaiste Leo Varadkar recently indicated that a VAT cut is currently not possible.

“We already have a discretionary VAT rate in Ireland. We have the lowest VAT rate, or one of the lowest VAT rates, in Europe,” Mr Varadkar said. He added if the Government was to cut VAT from its current rate of 13.5% to 12%, when the Government came to raise VAT again it would have to revert to 23% and Ireland would lose its special low VAT rate. The Central Statistics Office confirmed that inflation in March rose to 6.7% from 5.6% in February. This is the largest annual increase in the rate of inflation since November 2000 when annual inflation stood at 7%. Both electricity and gas bills are going up at over 20% on an annual basis with significant price rises due to take effect later this month. Home heating oil took a leap of over 58% in March, a rise of almost 127%. Petrol is up just over 35% while diesel is up by 46%, the CSO said.

THREE Waterford students were among those awarded a Waterford Institute of Technology President’s Scholarship at a ceremony held recently for 2020 and 2021 recipients. Lessons in Chemistry by Bonnie Garmus Meet the unconventional, uncompromising Elizabeth Zott… Chemist Elizabeth Zott is not your average woman. In fact, Elizabeth Zott would be the first to point out that there is no such thing.   But it’s the early 1960s and her all-male team at Hastings Research Institute take a very unscientific view of equality.   Like science, life is unpredictable. Elizabeth Zott finds herself not only a single mother, but the reluctant star of America’s most beloved cooking show, Supper at Six. Elizabeth’s unusual approach to cooking (combine one tablespoon acetic acid with a pinch of sodium chloride) proves revolutionary. But as her following grows, not everyone is happy. Because as it turns out, Elizabeth Zott isn’t just teaching women to cook. She’s daring them to change the status quo. There’s also a host of pitch perfect supporting characters right down to the irrepressible (and irresistibly named) dog Six-Thirty. Coming to the small screen soon as Apple TV+ have just inked a deal to produce the series with Brie Larson starring as the brilliant and formidable Elizabeth Zott. A rollicking good read, I highly recommend you run to your local bookshop and get your copy now.
